Teamwork makes the dream work

Gotham builds goat dairy with help from husband, father

NEW AUBURN, Wis. – A spark ignited years ago in a young girl’s heart has become reality for McKinsey Gotham.

Gotham began milking goats near New Auburn, Wis., last summer. With much of her goat herd being dry and due to have kids soon, she currently milks about 36 does in a single-12 parlor with just about all of the labor being done by her husband, Ezra, dad, Steve Seibel, and fatherin-law, Larry Gotham.

“We built all the facilities ourselves to keep our debt down,” said Gotham, who also grew up milking cows.

“Ezra welded the steel for the parlor, and our dads did a lot of construction, too.”

Gotham, who milks a mix of Alpine, LaMancha, Nubian, Saanen and crossbred goats rst fell in love with the small ruminants when she was in sixth grade.

“My Sunday School teacher had them, and of course, I ended up wanting one,” Gotham said.

From that point on, Gotham had a varying number of goats in addition to working for other dairy farmers throughout college up until last year. She enjoyed milking cows and considered making a career of it, but the physical

labor began to take a toll on her body and milk prices would have made things even more difcult.

“I was getting pretty beat up by the cows, and my husband, Ezra, said, ‘Why don’t you try milking goats?’”

Gotham said. “It ended up getting put on the back burner for a little while.”

Then, in 2014, she decided to pull the trigger and make her dream a reality, purchasing her rst group of goat kids the following year.

However, she ran into obstacles rst, particularly since her milk would have to go to Lancaster, Wis., in the far southwestern part of the state.

“They weren’t taking any new goat enrollments when we started building,” Gotham said. “Lancaster is a long way away, and I wouldn’t get picked up unless there was another goat dairy on their route. Fortunately, another one started a few miles away about ve or six years ago.”

Construction on the milking parlor began in the fall of 2016, and tin went on the milkhouse walls during the winter of 2016-17, not long before the rst group of does began to freshen in groups that spring.

“Ezra did full construction on both of the buildings with earthwork, framing, concrete,

The only thing he didn’t do was the pipeline work and exterior steel,” Gotham said.

“My dad and Larry helped with everything Ezra worked on.”

Gotham shipped her rst load of milk to Lancaster on June 12 after passing inspection and training goats to go through the parlor after being milked one at a time in a different shed.

“Those rst couple of weeks, I probably got two to four hours of sleep a night before I started to see some improvement,” Gotham said.

Torrential rains that plagued much of northwestern Wisconsin during the summer of 2017 also posed signicant challenges for the beginning dairy farmer.

“Goats don’t like rain at all, and if they got rained on in the holding area they weren’t

very happy about it,” Gotham said. “I had to bring them into the parlor two at a time, and I was taking wheelbarrows of bedding out to them every two hours because I just couldn’t keep them dry enough.”

“The construction company said they would have it built by November, but kept getting held up because of the rainy year. Because of subzero temperatures they only worked one day a week for three consecutive weeks starting through the end of December,” Gotham said. “Then, due to the temperatures being below zero, we weren’t able to build pens until the heatwave on the weekend of January 20. Finally, one day before the snowstorm came people just started showing up and we got cattle panels set up and the goats moved into the new barn just in time. It was a miracle that everything came together before the snow hit.”

Now that the loang shed is nished, Seibel was able to bring a load of doelings from his place the rst week of February, including his personal favorite, a LaMancha named Eleanor.

Even with working full time and the dairy being mostly nished, he still spends time helping his daughter and son-in-law.

“Goats are just so much fun,” Seibel said. “How can you not stop what you’re doing to pet them?”

Heading into her second year as a goat dairy farmer, Gotham is going to start kidding season in mid to late February, freshening groups of 10 to 15 each month. By summer, she estimates she will be milking around 100 does.

Gotham’s plans for 2018 also include a new concrete feed alley, waterers, headlocks and permanent pens.

“Some kid all of their does at once, and I couldn’t do it,” Gotham said. “It’s much easier for me to just space out kids.”

It took a few years to get up and running, but with teamwork Gotham is making her dream work. All in all, she is happy with how the seed planted in her heart all those years ago has come to blossom.

“It’s going pretty well,” Gotham said. “Goats are such happy animals that it’s been fun.”

Dairy farmers take part in Super Bowl activities

MINNEAPOLIS – With the Super Bowl in Minnesota this year, there were opportunities for dairy farmers in the state to experience the hustle and bustle of the event while interacting with consumers at the same time.

Charlie and Jessica Yost along with Chris Sukalski and her daughter, Stephanie, were four of the 65 dairy farmers who worked in the Midwest Dairy’s Fuel Up to Play 60 booth at the Super Bowl Experience held Jan. 27-Feb. 3 at the Minneapolis Convention Center in Minneapolis. During another event, the Metz family, who operates Metz’s HartLand Creamery, was able to showcase their cheese curds at the NFL VIP Tailgating Party during a four-hour event before the big game on Feb. 4, also at the Minneapolis Convention Center. “I had no idea what went on more than a week prior to the Super Bowl. I didn’t know there was so much stuff happening. It was a cool, oncein-a-lifetime chance to see

that,� said Sukalski, who milks 400 cows near Le Roy, Minn.

In Midwest Dairy’s booth at the Super Bowl Experience, kids could take part in a virtual reality activity. The child would put on a virtual reality headset in which they would be able to look down on a farm, simulated from that of Doug Heintz’s in Caledonia, Minn. Using hand simulators, the child could lift the roofs off the barns and see everything inside. “I think one of the things that’s really interesting is meeting students and today’s consumers with the kind of technology they are facing,� said Midwest Dairy CEO, Lucas Lentsch. “It’s giving students and adults the opportunities to connect to the dairy community in a unique and different way.�

Booth visitors could also watch a video about what happens on a farm, get a cheese sample and talk to one of the 65 dairy farmers who worked the booth throughout the week. “It’s a great opportunity that doesn’t come very often,� said Sukalski who worked at the booth on Jan. 30. “Some dairy farmers might wonder why we’re here, but we need to get out to consumers and not preach to the choir. What better opportunity to get out amongst consumers that we wouldn’t normally reach.�

For us, it really is liquid nutrients so we don’t have to apply chemicals to the eld for the crops,” said Jessica Yost, whose husband milks 90 cows with his parents on their dairy near St. Peter, Minn.

Another topic was food waste.

“I was able to turn it around and talk about how cows are the ultimate recycler. For instance, on our farm we get potato refusals from a factory.

We’re using food that would have been wasted to feed our animals,” Jessica said.

Sukalski and a few other dairy farmers also helped with the Fuel Up to Play 60 On-Field Skills and Drills Clinic. Over 500 students in the program attended the event throughout the week and participated in the clinic. The clinic started with a talk from an NFL player about the importance of exercise and physical activity along with a dairy farmer explaining the signicance of a healthy diet, including three servings of dairy. After that, the kids split into teams to run drills on the small football eld.

On Jan. 30, the Sukalskis were paired with Minnesota Vikings running back, Jerick McKinnon. Following the clinic, McKinnon spent time in the Midwest Dairy booth signing autographs.

“I didn’t realize how many people go for that kind of stuff.

There were a number of families with children who waited in

The event featured food from about 40 Minnesota companies, all selected by a committee.

Along with the food, people could take in concerts, including Sting and Darius Rucker.

“We’ve never been to something like this. The whole ambiance and atmosphere was very upscale,” Metz said, mentioning ice sculptures and numerous security checks to get inside.

Many people coming from the East Coast to cheer on their team had never heard of a cheese curd. Metz and his crew had to do a little explaining.

“We had positive feed back. Most of them are cheese lovers and they liked the cheese curds,” he said.

The Metzes brought 800 pounds of cheese curds with them, using most, but not all, of their supply. The event increased the farmstead creamery’s cheese curd orders by almost 70 percent for the week.

“We had to do extra vats of cheese curds, but we were able to t it in,” said Metz, who makes the cheese with milk from his family’s 200-cow dairy near Rushford, Minn.

Metz said it was fun to be able to educate people about cheese and dairy.

“It was an all around good event,” he said. “There were all kinds of Philadelphia fans and Patriots fans. Everyone was just there for the experience and having a great time.”

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) will offer “Down on the Farm: Supporting Farmers in Stressful Times” trainings in February and March. The professional development workshop will be offered in six different cities across Minnesota; it is designed to help people who work with farmers on a regular basis recognize and respond when they see farmers experiencing stress, anxiety, depression and other challenges.

Open burns pose risks to humans, environment

Levitan stresses importance of recycling ag plastics

SAUK CENTRE, Minn. – Within the last few years, recycling agricultural plastics has gained reputable traction throughout the dairy industry in the Upper Midwest.

However, as the practice of burning plastics still exists, so does the potentially harmful risk to human and environmental health.

“Why recycle agricultural plastics?

The answer is because the alternatives aren’t very healthy for yourself or for the environment,” Lois Levitan said.

Levitan, an assistant ecologist at Cornell University, presented, “Why recycle farm plastics?” during a Minnesota Milk Producers Association dairy management workshop Jan. 24 in Sauk Centre, Minn.

Since the early 2000s, Levitan has been a part of an agricultural plastics recycling program in New York, researching ways to mitigate the effects of plastics in the environment through recycling.

“There are three reasons we can argue to recycle plastics,” Levitan said.

Aside from most landlls not having the capabilities to properly dispose of the materials and burying plastics countering sustainability efforts, open burning is arguably the most detrimental to human and environmental health.

“The issue is, conceptually, open burning should only release carbon dioxide and water,” said Levitan, explaining how plastic lms are made of polyethylene, essentially carbon and hydrogen. “If

But an open burn is not a controlled, clean burn, and what’s left is toxic emissions and particulate matter.”

As the use of agricultural plastics has become commonplace, the material has evolved into a technical product – containing additives that are more than nitrogen and carbon to serve as infrared inhibitors, among other features.

Additionally, most on-farm open burns contain more than plastic, which further complicates the breakdown of the plastic material.

“Chlorine is ubiquitous – in the ocean water, our land, everywhere,” Levitan said.

grabs particles from the atmosphere and combines to release bad stuff from incomplete burns.”

In an incomplete burn, where temperatures are not accurate and materials are contaminated, the risk of creating particulate matter, toxic dioxins and furans, heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is high.

“Dioxins and furans are formed as a result of complete combustions, like PCBs,” Levitan said. “But then, there are other classes of dioxins that are made from incomplete burns. They’re byproducts made by pulling chlorine out of the atmosphere.”

Toxic dioxins are miniscule in size, but are known as a human carcinogen and can cause fatal damage, Levitan said.

While dioxins may travel quite a distance, depending on the location of the burn and weather conditions, they also fall locally.

“A study in the early 2000s found that food is a primary means by which dioxins enter the body of people in the United States,” said Levitan, citing the National Academy of Sciences. “If food is the main way that dioxins are entering our body as the product of open burning, you don’t want to have a re where or near where food is produced.”

The results indicated 21 percent of all dioxins present in food come from dairy products, excluding milk; freshwater sh

and shellsh, milk and beef closely followed.

Particulate matters are also a common result of an incomplete burn.

“Particulate matters are found in the smog in China or near a re,” Levitan said.

“They’re microscopic, and the smaller they are, the deeper they get into your lungs.”

Levitan referenced data collected by the United States Geological Survey, which indicated particulate matter smaller than a value of 2.5 has the ability to clog arteries and veins, and create an increased risk for infectious pathogens, and respiratory and cardiac problems, among other concerns.

“Some of the emissions that are coming out are chemicals that have all these various, strong health impacts,” Levitan said. “These are the kinds of things farmers and those doing outreach education should take into consideration.”

When agriculture plastics are properly recycled, the incinerators are highly controlled with high temperatures and lter emissions.

One burn barrel servicing a couple dozen houses releases the same amount of emissions as an incinerator burning 200 tons of waste per day, Levitan said.

“We have a waste energy facility, and we service seven counties,” Reinbold said.

“The amount of pollution is less than one burn barrel – it’s miniscule.”

But the concept of recycling plastics is relatively new, as the use of plastics in agriculture did not begin until after the 1970s.

“Plastics didn’t exist until after WWII,” Levitan said. “Even then, people would stick it in the back of the farm because they didn’t know what to do with it, and it wasn’t a problem for the rst couple of years.”

Then, as agriculture plastic gained traction, it was recommended to burn the product as a method of disposal. This was encouraged for many years as studies were inconclusive and alternative disposal methods were nonexistent.

Today, the use of agricultural plastics continues to rise as a product that is safer than traditional methods of feed storage and improves on-farm production and efciency.

“There are so many good reasons to use plastics, but we want to stop open burning on the farm and other places where there are people,” Levitan said. “Recycling is a better option and we should take advantage of it.”

Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? FFA is my favorite because of all the activities I can be involved in.

I’ve grown up in dairy, and it’s nice to get recognition on the state level for all the hard work I put in every day at the farm. I like connecting with others that have the same interests as I do, and it has helped me develop my future career path.

Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. My best experience has been serving as a national delegate for the FFA convention. There are 475 delegates in the nation and 14 come from Wisconsin. The state ofcers serve as delegates and then select three other FFA members from around the state.

We get to attend business and delegate meetings and discuss ideas for growth and change in the organization. After that experience and getting to know the state ofcer team, I’ve been thinking

What’s your favorite social media? I like using Facebook as a way to relate information about the truth about agriculture, farming and the dairy industry.

I can share information and connect with consumers in a positive manner. I try to dispel the negative things and explain the true story of the dairy industry.

What are your career aspirations?

I’m planning to attend Madison Area Technical College (MATC) for the vet tech program. I work with our vet a lot when they come here for herd health, and I’ve been able to assist whenever we’ve had a DA or something like that.

I’ve also been able to job shadow.

What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? I’ve learned how to talk to the public more effectively, answering questions and telling the true story of the dairy industry. I’ve also participated in the FFA speaking contests.

I’ve been able to attend leadership conferences and have learned to get out of my comfort zone. I’ve had experience with interviews and other things that have helped me prepare for my future.

Who do you look up to? My mom.

She’s been through a lot. My dad passed away in a farm accident when I was 3.

Not only did she have three little kids, she kept the farm together. She still works two other jobs plus on the farm.

This summer, I’m going to Ninilchik, Ala., on the Kenai Peninsula to work with my cousin as a deck hand on a halibut shing charter boat. People pay them to take them shing off the Alaskan coast. When do you do chores? Mostly during the weekends at noon or evenings more in the summer.

What’s your favorite chore and least favorite chore? I enjoy helping the vet and moving animals around the farm. The trips with my dad to the sales barn are a treat as we don’t get to go very often. I just like to be over at the farm helping with whatever is going on. My least favorite job is feeding calves. In the summer it isn’t so bad because you don’t have to put layers of clothes on to do the job, and my sister and I will water calves together.

What’s your favorite animal on your farm? It’s hard to pick but I have to say our 2-year-old dog Chippy. He will whimper when he sees me because he is so excited. He will follow me around where ever I go.

What’s your favorite subject in school? Math.

What’s something you’ve learned in school recently? I have learned how to solve this problem 4(2r+6).

If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. It starts with a big milking barn with two robots, a shed for machinery and one calf barn so no hutches are needed. A few bins for feed. The sick cows would be in their own separate barn.

I would have a red house like my parents have, but bigger. A stable for horses because I have always wanted horses to ride. I would have lots of cats and at least three dogs. Barns for other cattle, a big pen for my horses and goats to run freely, especially pygmy goats.

What’s your favorite dairy treat? Ice cream with a scoop of peanut butter.

What’s your favorite thing to do during the winter? Making forts and going sledding behind the Gator.

What do you like to do during recess? I enjoy playing basketball.

I normally help when asked on non-school days.

I do more in the summer time.

What’s your favorite chore and least favorite chore? My most favorite chore is unloading and loading cows and calves. I also like to help with herd health. I make sure the gate is closed so no cows get through. My least favorite is helping with feeding the calves because there is sometimes a lot and you have to carry heavy bottles.

What’s your favorite animal on your farm?

My favorite animal is our pony because he is very nice, and we get to ride him sometimes.

What’s your favorite subject in school? Art because you get to do a bunch of crafts and learn drawing skills.

What’s something you’ve learned in school recently? I have learned about the Earth’s layers, which is pretty neat.

What do you want to be when you grow up? I would like to be a coach for dance and work with kids.

If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. It would have a country style house. There would be goats, cows, horses, chickens, three uffy cats and two dogs. It would have six buildings, two for the cows, one for the goats and one for the horses. My cats would be inside the house, but my dogs would go in and out. There would be a garden with tons of vegetables and a barn for milking the cows. A shed to store all the equipment, and I can’t forget the chicken coop.

What’s your favorite dairy treat? Yogurt and ice cream.

What’s your favorite thing to do during the winter? Build snow forts and going to the farm to be pulled in a sled behind the Gator.

What do you like to do during recess? I like to hang out and play with my friends.

Sylvia Nachreiner 5 years old Kindergarten When do you do chores? When we can help and are not in school.

What’s your favorite chore and least favorite chore? I don’t like to do milking, it just takes long. I like helping my mom in the summer with calves to get them done. I pick up a lot of bottles at one time even the big ones. I can put the small ones in the hutches, but the big ones are too heavy. Sometimes, I help Mom in the back of barn. I like to ride with my dad in the eld. I also like to help Grandma with calves.

What’s your favorite animal on your farm? The cats because they snuggle with me, and I love them.

What’s your favorite subject in school?

I like learning numbers, writing and singing songs.

What’s something you’ve learned in school recently? I learned about Jesus and Mary.

What do you want to be when you grow up? A teacher.

Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? I like showing cattle. FFA is my favorite. I get to help other people and do stuff I haven’t done before.

What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? I’ve learned to be more social and talk to more people.

I’ve meet a lot of new friends. At the state fair, I’ve learned to talk to the public about the dairy industry.

What’s your favorite social media?

I like Instagram and Snapchat because everything is at your ngertips and you can see what people are doing.

Who do you look up to? I look up to my sister, Crystal. She does a lot of FFA-related stuff and serves as an ofcer.

What are your career aspirations? I want to be an underwater welder. I like welding, and I’ve never been scubadiving, but I’d like to. Working as an underwater welder combines the two.

Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. A lot of people in school don’t know I come from a farm.

What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? I’ve learned how to show cattle and to judge cattle. I also have learned to communicate better with people.

Tell us some of your duties on the farm. I usually feed calves and then feed the cows grain, protein and hay. I milk when Crystal is gone.

Who do you look up to? I look up to our old FFA advisor, Darrell Hines. He drove us hard to reach our goals and accomplish things.

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? I’d change the way we use energy. We use a lot of petroleum, oil and coal. I’d like to see more environmentally friendly energy like solar power.

Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. A lot of people at school don’t realize I’m from a farm. There aren’t very many kids at our school who live on farms.

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? I’d like to see more equality in the world. I’d like to tell people that we are all equal and should be treated the same.

Thomas provides tips to maximize eld efciency

ALBANY, Minn. – Grasses and alfalfa have different nutrient requirements based on a series of factors, such as soil pH and type, fertilization practices, and even what varieties of forages are planted on the same eld.

Speaking to a full house, Ev Thomas outlined the basic nutrient requirements to growing quality forages in his presentation, “Managing soil nutrients on dairy farms,” during the Tour de Forage annual meeting Jan. 31 in Albany, Minn.

“An old agronomist once said plants ain’t got teeth,” Thomas said.

“They don’t have the ability to use nutrients until the nutrients are a part of the soil solution.”

Thomas is president of Oak Point Agronomics in Hammond, N.Y., with more than 40 years of practical experience at the William H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute.

On dairy farms, the most common application of nutrients on the soil is through absorption. While pH levels, soil moisture and nutrients already present in the soil easily challenge that process, the balance on dairy farm elds remain unchanged.

“Unless the farm exports manure or large quantities of crops, the balance on virtually all dairy farms is positive,” Thomas said. “On average, for every 3 pounds of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium you’re brining on [to the soil], you’re shipping 1 pound off in the form of milk, cull cows and crop sales.”

readily available for forages. Although, Thomas does not suggest correcting nutrient deciencies without fully understanding soil composition.

“High pH soils tie up tremendous amounts of phosphorus, especially if the high pH is in the sub soil and top soil. We can be hiding increased phosphorus concentrations because soil tests are based on soil extractions,” Thomas said.

In this scenario, high levels of phosphorus will not leach into the ground, allowing sub soil and top soil to store the nutrient almost indenitely.

“You could argue we’re postponing a problem, and we might be postponing a problem for our grandchildren or great-grandchildren,” Thomas said.

To combat this growing problem, Thomas urges dairy farmers to not apply phosphorus unless recommended by an agronomist.

“If you can rely on manure to do so, do so,” Thomas said. “If you take a look at your elds closest to your barns, you’ll nd very high phosphorus soils, and research proves there is no impact on corn yield or corn silage quality.”

Manure applications can provide enough phosphorus and nitrogen to eliminate the need of top dressing the elds with additional fertilizer.

“I tell people that manure is a multivitamin,” Thomas said. “It not only recycles all of the nutrients you have raised on your farm, but it is also bringing in nutrients from grains and supplements brought onto the farm.”

Farmers should also consider the planted forage and individual nutrient requirements of each when balancing soil nutrients.

Alfalfa develops taproots that can reach upwards of 30 feet, if there is no blockage. Grasses, on the other hand, have dense roots a part of a shallow root system.

“The results show that grasses are much, much more efcient in nutrient uptake,” Thomas said. “This can be a plus or minus, depending on what you’re trying to do.”

Through various research studies and applicable use, Thomas has determined grass, in a thriving environment, will accumulate almost 3 percent potassium where potassium soil levels are low enough to starve alfalfa.

“This is a problem in growing alfalfa-grass in low-level potassium soils, and also when growing alfalfa for dry cows,” Thomas said.

One example Thomas provided was from his work at Miner Institute. The eld was seeded with alfalfa and reed canarygrass, and manure was applied to the low-nutrient soil.

With soil tests and three cuttings of grass, the soil tested 0 percent for potassium, but the grass held 2.65 percent. The alfalfa in the eld died, as well.

“The root system of grass is almost impermeable,” Thomas said. “Trying to sneak anything passed a wellestablished root system is like trying to throw a lamb chop passed a wolf. It just isn’t going to happen.”

The only way alfalfa may compete in a eld seeded with grass is if the soil potassium is well established. Therefore, Thomas does not recommend seeding grass and alfalfa.

“If you have a good crop of alfalfa and interseed grass, you’re expecting it to compete with a mature stand. That’s like putting a calf in with a pen of cows and asking it to compete at the feed bunk,” Thomas said. “And depending on how quickly you can increase potassium levels, you might just be delaying the inevitable.”

If given a choice, Thomas will only seed alfalfa. However, if grass is wanted in the ration, he recommends seeding bromegrass, tall fescue or meadow fescue on a eld low in potassium and one that will not be fertilized with manure. Then, fertilize the elds with nitrogen.

“Feed that to anyone except dry cows,” said Thomas, explaining the DCAD imbalance. “After rst cutting, top dress it with calcium chloride to decrease DCAD and harvest second crop for dry cows.”

Additional fertilization should be considered after observing the elds, particularly when considering sulfur as a nutrient.

“You do more damage to alfalfa with real grass and fertilizers than you do with manure,” Thomas said. “Find those damaged plants and look at the crowns. You will see broken and diseased crowns, and it’s all your fault. Alfalfa doesn’t die, you kill it.”

To gather a thorough understanding of nutrient composition in elds and forages, farmers should regularly soil test and do a tissue analysis to detect deciencies and then make decisions based on those ndings.

RED WING, Minn. – Dr. Bob Milligan, senior consultant for Dairy Strategies, LLC, and professor emeritus at Cornell University, knows dairying today is more than milking cows. Dairy farmers need to look at the bigger picture.

“Where will your farm be 75 or 100 years from now?” Milligan said. “You are being called by the legacy of your farm, by your family, by future generations, to become the leader your business needs.”

Milligan talked through ve keys to doing just that during his presentation, “Positioning your farm for the future” on Jan. 19 during the Form-A-Feed Professional Dairy Conference in Red Wing, Minn.

The rst key is to articulate your vision.

“The challenge is not to have a vision, it’s to articulate.

The interesting thing is that it is very difcult, but it’s also very Dr Bob milligan important,” Milligan said.

“One characteristic of young people today is they aren’t going to work at a job that doesn’t have this,” Milligan said about each person knowing they are doing something good for a business.

While many farms may have a mission statement, Milligan said that is mostly for the owner of the farm.

“It’s the reason the farm exists. You need to know why you exist so you can develop strategy,” Milligan said.

The vision is the key to employee engagement and passion.

“That’s why vision is so important – it’s the ‘why’ of the business,” Milligan said.

The second key to positioning a farm for the future is implementing a winning strategy.

“I believe the future of a business has to be someone’s top priority. That doesn’t mean you spend a lot of time on it. It means you roll out of bed thinking of strategy,” Milligan said.

Milligan said that strategy includes the synergistic interaction of three things: the unique and specic direction of the business, the physical and human resources available to the business, and the available markets for the business’s products or services.

In today’s dairying enterprises, Milligan said more focus needs to be put on what is happening to the business externally, not just internally.

“That’s why I think the transition [into this new dairying age] will be more difcult. Because our comfort level is focusing internally …,” Milligan said. “It’s the owner’s responsibility to avoid being blindsided. That means adversely being affected by changes occurring around you can be seen.”

The third key is understanding a modern denition of success. Milligan said there are two components of business success. The rst is the smart side – the fundamentals of the business such as decisionmaking, operations, production, strategy, nances and marketing. The other is the healthy side – having high productivity with low turnover among employees, high morale and job satisfaction, and minimal politics in the work place.

In order for all of this to work, there needs to be a healthy business culture.

“The culture is the farm’s personality,” Milligan said.

“Culture affects how employees work, how they interact and how they get things done. It creates pride in the workforce and loyalty among customers. It is observing the business’s real core values,” Milligan said.

Core values answer the question, “what do I want to live by?” They emerge naturally and are two or three guidelines for a farm’s operation.

“Values need to be constantly acted upon, or they are only good intentions,” Milligan said.

The fourth key to positioning a farm for success is establishing a leadership team.

“Farms, like all businesses, are getting bigger and more complex. In most cases, it isn’t just one leader.

Because of this, in order to set the priorities and set the farm for the future requires some structure,” Milligan said.

So it must be established who is on the leadership team, which Milligan said is most likely the primary owners of the farm. Then it must be established how the leadership team works together to make decisions.

“They ensure the responsibility of future success,” Milligan said.

A good leadership team will have synergy.

“Synergy is created by everyone expressing their ideas, perspectives, concerns and even hunches,” he said. “It’s the leader’s responsibility to create an atmosphere of trust where everyone is free to speak and disagree.”

Milligan also said the discussion, especially questions and criticism, must be about ideas and not about the people or their personalities.

The last key is to make positioning your farm for the future a priority. Milligan said it’s important to carve out time to be prepared for the future – how the business will grow and develop as well as handle times of crisis.

“You don’t want to make decisions [about the future of your farm] in crisis mode,” Milligan said.

That’s why it’s important to have it done before that might happen.

“What are you going to do to make your business a priority?” he said.

Minnesota Counties seeking dairy princess contestants Morrison County Morrison County American Dairy Association is seeking candidates to participate in this year’s Dairy Princess Contest.

The 65th Annual Morrison County Dairy Princess Contest has been set for March 24, 2018 at the Falls Ballroom, Little Falls, Minn.

Candidates must be a high school graduate by July 1, 2018, and not yet 24 years of age. She or her parents must be actively engaged in Production of milk for sale to a licensed plant during the current year. A candidate also qualies if she or her parents are employed on a dairy farm.

The newly crowned Princess will be able to attend a training seminar in May at the College of St. Bens and will also have a chance to compete for 12 spots to advance to the Princess Kay competition in August.

At all levels of competition, contestants are judged on their communication skills, personality, and enthusiasm and knowledge of the Dairy Industry.

Mower County The Mower County American Dairy Association is seeking candidates to participate in the 2018 Mower County Dairy Princess contest.

A candidate also qualies if she or her parents are employed on a dairy farm in a dairy-related capacity. Mower County dairy royalty are paid for their appearances and receive college scholarships.

Girls in 3rd and 4th grade, whose parents or guardians are Mower County dairy farmers or are employed on a dairy farm, are eligible to become Mower County Milkmaids. Girls who are avid users and promoters of dairy products may also apply. Milkmaids can participate at dairy promotion events throughout the county.

This is a Mower County program and there is no further competition beyond the

county level.

Cheap vs. cost conscious Sterry gives tips on how to manage farm expenditures

OSSEO, Wis. – Prot margins are what keep a farming operation going, but knowing what it costs to produce 100 pounds of milk is also crucial to surviving and thriving in today’s dairy industry.

Ron Sterry, an agricultural lender with dairy expertise based in Osseo, Wis., is seeing the cost of production on dairies he works with in western Wisconsin ranging from $15.28 to $17.65 per cwt. However, factors such as a farm’s land base can skew their cost of production.

“A few are higher and one organic producer is under $14,” Sterry said. “While the average cost of pro-

duction is a valuable tool when analyzing an individual dairy enterprise, comparing that enterprise to an overall average can be a bit misleading.”

According to Sterry, the most common mistake in calculating production costs, and simultaneously lowering those expenses, is not knowing what expenses to include.

“If you don’t know what [your cost of production] is, it’s hard to make decisions on how to lower it,” Sterry said.

He recommended starting with Schedule F expenses, including reasonable and realistic depreciation on certain assets.

Sterry said another challenge for producers, particularly with multiple farm enterprises in addition to the dairy such as cash cropping or other livestock, is having an accounting system that separates the income and expenses for each enterprise.

“Much of the information comes from their schedule F and when all the incomes and expenses are lumped together you don’t have accurate info for calculating the cost of production,” Sterry said.

Having a this-is-the-way-we’ve-always-donethings attitude is a major block in the path to managing farm expenses.

“Some producers are simply unwilling to consider any changes. They have always managed their operations in a certain manner and are skeptical that change will result in improvement,” Sterry said.

Sterry said ego is an obstacle in some situations.

“Excessive ego or pride has in certain cases hindered a farmer’s protability. Without a doubt, farmers should have some pride in their operation and thriving in today’s ag economy is no small accomplishment.

However, it may become a problem when a producer feels that they need to purchase a new tractor, combine, pickup or whatever simply because the neighbor has one sitting in their yard. I have also seen cases where the desire to have the highest herd average in the county has resulted in an individual spending $2 for an extra $1 worth of milk,” Sterry said. “And lastly, for some their ego may prevent them from asking others for something as simple as another opinion. It is that fear of being perceived as a failure just because you have a problem that holds people back.”

Once all the information in calculating cost of production has been compiled and organized, farmers need to look at what they can trim from their spending with minimal risk. By and large, feed costs are the largest expense on dairies, Sterry said.

“For most, that is the place to start. Producers need to know their cost of production for all the feed produced on their farm and not just what the feed invoices from the feed mill total,” Sterry said. “They need to look at optimum plant populations as a means to lowering seed costs. If their cost of producing a feed is higher than the current market price they should consider buying that commodity and not producing [it].”

In addition to feed costs and crop production, Sterry said land rental rates must also be in line with the value of the commodity produced on that land.

“Paying excessive rent just so somebody else doesn’t get it seldom improves cash ow or margin,” Sterry said.

When deciding what inputs to cut and what to keep buying, Sterry said there is a difference between being cheap and being cost conscious.

“When cutting expenses, one should not sacrice good cow management and cow comfort. It isn’t just how much you are spending but getting the maximum benet from each dollar spent. Being cost conscious and considering alternative products, methods and services often results in substantial savings,” Sterry said. “While big investments may pay off over time, a producer must always consider whether that investment will generate enough current income or will it be too great a drain on current cash ow. … If it falls into that want category you may want to consider delaying that expenditure.”

If you’re working with a lender, Sterry said not to wait until a small problem or a series of small problems snowballs into something far larger.

“The three most important things a producer can do if they are having or anticipate having any problems with their loans is to communicate. The sooner you communicate the situation with your lender, the better, and the … more options you and your lender have to navigate through them,” Sterry said. “Good ag lenders are always willing to discuss any concerns you might have and work with you on a solution for both nancial and production problems. A producer should never be ashamed because they have a problem.”

Changes that can be made now, and others that can be made when times are good to weather the next storm include thinking about margin and not just milk prices in a cost-conscious light. He also suggested other changes: Renegotiating any high rental rates, considering alternative cropping methods and inputs, or improving a breeding program to get more cows bred and into peak milk ow sooner in their next lactation “Just knowing what your cost of production is can be a huge rst step and get a producer thinking about margin and not just the price of milk. I believe that if you think margin every time you purchase an input you will start to see where changes are needed in your operation. The changes that can be made now are those that will improve cash ow now.” Sterry said.

Black & Red Lim-Flex Beef Cattle NOTE: This is a very good herd of home-raised spring calving and fall cow-calf pairs, plus breeding bulls from leading programs.
