Networking afterhours Semex, Lallemand Animal Nutrition host Trade Show afterhours hospitality events

After the hustle and bustle of the day’s events, it is nice to be able to kick back, relax and network.

World Dairy Expo’s Trade Show afterhours events are designed to offer just that.

Semex and Lallemand Animal Nutrition are just two of the companies that will host events at this year’s World Dairy Expo after the Trade Show closes for the day. These free hospitality events offer the opportunity for clients, customers and Expo attendees to socialize, learn and connect with one another in a casual setting.

“It is a great opportunity for us to interact with our clients and share the Semex story,” said Brenda LeeTurner, marketing communications specialist with Semex. “It’s a fun, casual way to visit with Semex staff and friends, and learn more about what Semex has to offer.”

Semex‘s events will take place in the company’s tent, located by the globe, from 5-7 p.m. Oct. 4 and 5.

The night before, Lallemand Animal Nutrition will host its Trade Show afterhours event from 4-7:30 p.m. in the Waubesa Room, which is located on the second floor of the Exhibition Hall.

WDPA dairy product contest sees growth in entries, variety

The World Dairy Expo Championship Dairy Product Contest continues to grow in both products entered and in the variety of those products.

“As the contest keeps growing, wherein the past we might have a bunch of products clumped into one class, now we have broken those products out because of so many entries,” said Brad Legreid, executive director of the Wisconsin Dairy Products Association (WDPA).

Continued from PRODUCT CONTEST | Page 1 When the contest started in 2003, there were 100 entries split between the cheese and butter class, said Legreid.

“We were thrilled to get 100 entries that first year,” he said.

This year, there were 85 classes judged by 54 trained individuals with 1,402 product entries.

“It’s a booming contest,” Legreid said. “It’s just going off the charts.”

Due to a large increase in the variety of dairy products being entered, Legreid said classes have had to become specialized. For instance, this year, there were classes for cheeses such as mascarpone, brie, ricotta and feta.

With over 250 entries for ice cream in the contest last year, the ice cream classes this year were altered to reflect divisions for ice cream with nuts, peanut butter, caramel,

cookies and cookie dough.

“That’s the best part of my job all year long,” Legreid said.

“When the judges are done judging the ice cream classes, there are leftovers. And, to be able to go around and sample some of the best ice cream you could ever imagine, that is a dream come true.”

While the majority of the entries come from the United States, Legreid said they have received entries from New Zealand, Canada, England and Scotland.

“It is so rewarding, and when it is all over … it makes you feel good for all the work we put in,” Legreid said. “We are doing it for the industry. … It makes me feel good we can help [those in the dairy industry] out with this contest.”

World Dairy Expo Championship Dairy Product Contest is hosted by Wisconsin Dairy Products Association.

Third-generation dairymen and brothers James and Robert Baerwolf and their families own and operate Sassy Cow – an organic operation with 250 cows and a 600-cow conventional dairy.

Sassy Cow Creamery opened its doors in 2008.

Positioned only 15 minutes north of Madison, Wis., the farmstead store is open to the public. Milk, ice cream and dairy products, as well as local products, are available.

“We believe that one of Wisconsin agriculture’s greatest assets is its diversity,” James said. “… At one time, almost every community had a milk bottling or cheese plant located close by. Today most are gone. We believe that the timing is right once again for a local farmstead dairy. It is this core belief that determines how we manage Sassy Cow Creamery.”

Kara Kasten-Olson, the creamery’s sales and marketing director, said 6,000 gallons of

milk is bottled every day and over 50 flavors of ice cream are made.

Sassy Cow’s vanilla, chocolate and dark cherry chocolate ice cream flavors have claimed first-place honors at previous WDE Championship Dairy Product Contests from 2010 to 2013. So, too, have the farm’s 2 percent milk and whole chocolate milk in 2014 and 2008, respectively.

In this year’s contest, the creamery entered their cold brew moocha milk in the innovative dairy product category – a category they have never entered before.

Sassy cow also entered its 2 percent milk, whole organic milk, whole chocolate milk, caramel chunk ice cream and raspberry chuck ice cream.

“Each year, we enter new ice cream flavors to get feedback on our products,” Kasten-Olson said.

Contestants benefit from the contest no matter the placing their product receives,

said Legreid.

“We get so many calls of thanks in this office,” he said.

“Even people who don’t win first, second or third place, they have the advantage of getting the judges’ score sheets.

They can take a look at how maybe their product didn’t quite measure up, and they can always tweak their product formula to see an improvement.

Even the non-winners get a big advantage from this contest. We are helping the entire industry and that’s very gratifying.”

The first-place products will be auctioned off during the World Dairy Expo Championship Dairy Product Contest Auction today at WDE from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Monona and Wingra Rooms on the second floor of the Exhibition Hall.

Wisconsin 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Team takes home top honors

Brian McCullough said it was the ultimate accomplishment for him and his fellow Wisconsin teammates to be named the top National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest competitors. The team, consisting of Cole Mahlkuch, McCullough and his sister, Rachel, and Clayton Mahlkuch, and coached by Mike Marean, placed first overall.

“I’m still trembling,” Cole Mahlkuch said.

They might have won the competition, but mind games can get to anyone.

“When I first started today, I thought all hope was lost and I just kind of kept going. Then, I realized, we could do this,” Mc-

Cullough said.

The team was clearly proud of their accomplishment and glad it was something they completed together.

“We’ve been showing together since we were itty bitty,” McCullough said. “We all live within a couple miles of each other and have bonded so much as a group through this experience.”

Mahlkuch agreed.

“We’re just a bunch of best friends doing this together and that makes it all worth it,” he said.

The team is excited to have a chance to compete in Europe at the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh, Scotland, along with the other top-three placing teams.

Awna Hirsch, of Colorado, is awarded the top honor for the individual competition of the National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest with 707 points.

The team from Maryland placed third. Team members included Dylan Hill, Tiffany Green, Charles Patterson V and Ryan Allen. They were coached by A. Dennis and W. Carlisle.

Feelings of excitement and elation filled Awna Hirsch of Colorado when she was named the individual overall cattle judging champion.

She credits her sister for her lifelong push to greatness.

“My sister has always been my biggest competition,” Hirsch said. “I have always looked up to her and tried to beat her scores.

I’ve been training with her since I was 5 years old to get to this point, so she’s been a big inspiration to me.”

Hirsch said the competition was difficult, but the hardest competitor she faced was herself.

“The most difficult part for me was not doubting myself,” Hirsch said. “You don’t know

how other people do and you can’t compare in that moment, so you just have to go out there, do your best and trust your instinct.”

Hirsch felt prepared going into the day and knew she could be proud of her accomplishment when her name was announced.

“I felt pretty confident with how I did, but it’s just amazing to actually be here and realize that all the work I put in was worth it,” Hirsch said.

Placing second behind Hirsch was B. McCullough of Wisconsin with 700 points. Third place went to Dicke from Minnesota with 696 points.

How many miles did you travel to arrive at World Dairy Expo?

10,000 miles.

Tell us about your journey to World Dairy Expo. It’s long. We start in Melbourne, Australia, fly to Los Angeles, then Seattle and then Chicago. We then bus or taxi to the show. But it’s always worth the trip, because it’s always exciting to come to Madison, Wis. I’ve probably come 12-15 times, and it’s great to not only see the great cows, but also to catch up with the industry leaders and our friends from all over the world. It keeps us relevant.

What does it take to plan for the trip to Madison, Wis.? It takes a fair bit because we have CrazyCow In Print, we still have the farm and we both have some other responsibilities in other businesses. So, getting away for any length of time includes getting staff and friends organized and you’ve got to try and plan it in advance so no embryo calves are hitting the ground when we’re away. World Dairy Expo is also right in the middle of irrigation, silage and hay-making here in Australia.

Who all helps make the travels go smoothly? What are their responsibilities? Myself and my wife, Dianna. We seem to have to organize other people’s trips, too. We have about half a dozen friends, partners in cattle and colleagues traveling with us, and we’re meeting up with others who are coming from all parts of the globe. World Dairy Expo is our central meeting place.

What are your must-dos once you arrive at World Dairy Expo?

It’s pretty simple for me: To see the cows and catch up with the people.

What do you do during World Dairy Expo when you’re not working? After the International Ayrshire Show, I’m going to be joining Lookout’s string, so it’ll be fairly busy, I imagine. Other than that, we’ll just be looking at the cows and catching up with people.

What is your most memorable year traveling to World Dairy Expo? Probably seeing Apple as a Two-Year-Old win her class in the International Holstein Show in 2006. I’d been talking to Mike Deaver when he first found her before she calved, and to see the hype he generated before and after World Dairy Expo that year was phenomenal. It was such an incredible feat. And, then to see how Apple Mania went on and impacted the breed has been absolutely amazing. There have been a lot of special moments and that’s why World Dairy Expo is the greatest show on Earth.

UW-River Falls takes national judging title Virginia Tech’s Iager wins top individual honors

The University of Wisconsin-River Falls landed at the top of the pack when the scores were tabulated at the National Intercollegiate Dairy Judging Contest held Monday at World Dairy Expo, besting the team from Virginia Tech by a mere three points. Top individual honors went to Virginia Tech’s Shelby Iager, who won the contest with an average score of 47.7 points.

Judging is a family affair in Iager’s family. She credits her father with being the core backbone behind her judging skills and career, which began in 4-H at the age of 8.

“My whole family has been involved in judging, and my dad judges shows,” Iager said.

This contest was not the first time Iager has sorted cattle on the colored shavings, having represented her home state of Maryland in the National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest.

“When I came to Madison for the 4-H contest, I didn’t do as well as I hoped,” Iager said. “That was my drive to come back to compete in this contest. My goal was to make the top 25. I never dreamed this could happen.”

Iager enjoys the friendships she has made while participating in dairy judging and having the opportunity to visit many farms and see a lot of great cattle.

“The whole thing can be a challenge at times,” Iager said. “Long days and a lot of preparation, it’s really a whole skill you need to work on perfecting.”

In addition to the influences of her family, Iager credits her collegiate coaches, Dr. Katherine Knowlton and Kayla Umbel, with continually pushing her to work hard and improve her skills.

The successful campaign made by the UW-River Falls team brought the national title back to the school for the first time in 23 years, and the team claimed the top honors in the oral reasons division, as

The team was led by the third highplacing individual Erica Helmer, followed by teammate Kaila Tauchen who placed ninth and rounded out by fellow teammates Matt Kramer and Clint Irrthum. The team is coached by Steve Kelm.

The four teammates have long resumes evaluating dairy cattle as all began their careers early in 4-H, participating in successful local judging programs. As a team, they’ve racked up several high places at other contests, including third place finishes at both the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, Mass., and the All-American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, Penn., last month. Last fall, they claimed the top oral reasons honors and placed second overall

at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky. “I thought the contest was challenging, particularly the Ayrshire breed,” Helmer said. “I thought it really allowed the contestants to sort themselves out.”

Kramer agreed, adding that the classes really made the contestants think about previous contest classes they had seen and utilize what they had learned with those.

“I told them last night that I had no idea which of the four of them would be the best today,” Kelm said of his team. “They are all so equally talented, and each contest they have taken turns to one-up the others.”

Tauchen has enjoyed the friendship and closeness that the four have developed.

“These three really have become my best friends,” Tauchen said.

Helmer agreed, adding that she values the connections they have made with students in other schools, as well.

This team had the unique opportunity of meeting and working with the students from the Aeres University of Applied Sciences from the Netherlands, which works in partnership with River Falls.

“They actually coached the Dutch students on oral reasons yesterday,” Kelm said of the experience his team had with their foreign counterparts.

Williams leads team in her first judging season

The International Post-Secondary Dairy Cattle Judging Contest was a serious case of déjà vu for SUNY-Cobleskill coach Carrie Edsall. For the second year in a row, Edsall’s team took top honors in the contest over 14 teams.

The coincidence did not stop there. Once again, Edsall coached a young woman with no prior dairy judging experience to top honors in the contest. Winning the contest was Lydia Williams, an ag business major and dairy science minor student. Williams was joined by her fellow teammates Rachel Hall, Toni Jacque and Shannon Sears.

“She sees cows so well,” Edsall said of Williams. “All she needed to do was pull together on her reasons.”

Williams described her emotions as excitement and shock.

“I came late to the game,” Williams said of her fledgling judging career. “I grew up on a commercial dairy farm, but I leased my first Jersey show calf when I was 12. I got bit by the show-bug and became addicted to pretty cows.”

Williams said that after years of admiring cows, placings come fairly easy for her, and finds that reasons are the difficult part.

Williams credits Edsall and Kevin Ziemba as being instrumental in her success, saying that without their support and encouragement, she would not have been in a position to have a successful contest.

According to Edsall the team starts practicing in earnest at the New York State Fair in late August.

“I was shocked how good of day we ended up having. We've put a lot of hard work in, but it's been worth it.”

They practice together as a team several times each week during the fall judging season.

“Because they all see cows really well, our primary focus for practices is on oral reasons,” Edsall said. “I often make them re-work their reasons during our practices.”

All four teammates agree that they have become a tight, close-knit group during their judging workouts.

“I really enjoy the fact that we can all see the classes slightly different, but still have the same overall concept,” Williams said.

Hall expressed a great deal of pride in the consistent success displayed by her teammates as the awards were distributed.

“I was shocked how good of day we ended up having,” Hall said.

“We’ve put a lot of hard work in, but it’s been worth it.”

Tell us about the animals you brought to World Dairy Expo. We have 25 head from home and six tie-ins. We Red & Whites, Holsteins, Jerseys and Brown Swiss.

How many years have you shown at World Dairy Expo? I’ve exhibited at World Dairy Expo for 40 years.

How many years have you shown at World Dairy Expo? I’ve shown here since I was at least 10, so about 12 years.

My dad has shown here for 39 years.

This year, he’s judging the International Ayrshire Show.

How did you get involved in dairy cattle shows? I got started the same as everyone else, with 4-H calves.

How is showing World Dairy Expo different than other dairy cattle shows?

This is where everyone comes to see what they have and how they compare. Our trip to get here takes 38-40 hours.

How did you get involved in dairy cattle shows? I grew up doing it. Both my mother and father grew up showing. My dad started with his father, and my mom’s family has been showing for several generations.

What is your favorite memory of World Dairy Expo? Last year, winning Grand Champion of the International Holstein Show and then Supreme Champion with Blexy is a great memory. A close second was when Beaumond Spendide Spirit was Reserve Champion of the International Holstein Show in 2003.

How is showing World Dairy Expo different than other dairy cattle shows?

It’s different because of the number of animals, but also because all of the breeds we exhibit. The shows are very competitive and strong shows. The atmosphere here at World Dairy Expo is wonderful and always so welcoming. It’s a very friendly and easy show to exhibit at.

When you’re not showing, how do you like to spend your time at World Dairy Expo? Visiting, seeing everyone and catching up with friends.

What is your favorite memory of World Dairy Expo? My favorite memory was last year, when Lookout Farm won the Senior Best Three Females Class of the International Red & White Show.

How did you get involved in dairy cattle shows? A good friend of mine growing up got a registered Red & White heifer and that piqued my interest. I bought my first registered heifer when I was a freshman in high school. I started going to shows by doing nights for Bob Hart, and then working for Steve Searles and Kyle Knaup.

How many years have you shown at World Dairy Expo? I’ve been coming with Ferme Blondin for the past six years.

How did you get involved in dairy cattle shows? I personally got involved by growing up on a dairy farm in Ontario, Canada. I was very involved in 4-H and started exhibiting as a young member.

After that, I started working in the marketing aspect, first with Holstein Canada and then with Semex. That got me close to cows; but when I started working with Ferme Blondin, that really got me back involved with cows. My job is working to increase their embryo and genetics marketing, as well as managing the Blondin Sires program.

How is showing World Dairy Expo different than other dairy cattle shows?

World Dairy Expo is the center of the dairy world. This is the event that we go to where we are able to connect with everyone, businesses we work with and clients who purchase our genetics globally. Having a presence here is a big part of our marketing plan and being able to make those connections.

What is your favorite memory of World Dairy Expo? Personally, my favorite memory is always the same. I love hearing the judges’ speeches before they select their champions. I get goosebumps hearing the emotion and the stories about how they got to where they are. I always remember those.

When you’re not showing, how do you like to spend your time at World Dairy Expo? Meeting people, that’s an even bigger part than the cows. The cows bring us together here, but the people are the result of the cows. It’s great being able to connect with people and meet people who I have only previously known from the Internet.

The sheer amount of exposure you get here is amazing; not only how many people are here, but the energy around the entire event, everything that Expo is.

Where I live, up in northern Minnesota, I don’t get to see a lot of these people except at Expo.

What is your favorite memory of World Dairy Expo? My favorite memory was winning the Red & White World Dairy Expo International Futurity the second time in 2013, with a homebred cow, Kara-Kesh RK Spark-Red-ET. The Senior Two-Year-Old we have here is her daughter.

When you’re not showing, how do you like to spend your time at World Dairy Expo? I enjoy catching up with friends. I also like taking my kids through the Trade Show. It’s such a different world from what they are used to on our small farm.

We have Holsteins, Jerseys and Red & Whites mostly. We also board cattle for people as one of our parts of our business.

When did you first attend World Dairy Expo?

Why? The first year I ever attended was 1998. I was 18 years old. I came when I started fitting for people. I brought one of my own animals that year, and I also helped some people.

What is the most unique part about dairy farming in your region? One of the things we see is a lot of small dairies are no longer around any more.

But, there are also a lot of really nice type herds in our area, so it really helps the showing community.

What do you enjoy most about dairy farming in your region? We really enjoy the camaraderie with other breeders and farmers. We are lucky to have an outreach of people who share the same interest as us, and we can work together to keep going on in business without having to get larger.

How has World Dairy Expo influenced your farm management practices? World Dairy Expo is probably the center of everything we do when it comes to farm management. We spend 365 days a year to get ready to be here. When we leave here, it’s all about preparing to be here. It’s the center of what we do everyday to have our cattle ready to exhibit here and also get our farm name out and market. It’s because of the contacts, marketing, outreach, showing off our product, and selling cattle is a huge aspect for us.

What is one tool you implemented on your farm after attending World Dairy Expo? The largest tool we have is talking to other breeders from across the country and Canada. We learn so much from other people who brings us together; ideas of

how we should feed cows, different marketing strategies, and where to find new cattle. We like competing against each other, but in the end we are all here for the same thing.

What is the value of attending dairy shows as it relates to your dairy and your position as a young farmer in the industry? Dairy shows are the backbone of what we do. It’s critical that we attend cattle shows; it’s critical that we take in cattle shows for our next generation. We have three young sons and we want to keep this alive. We’ve grown up in the business, so we want to keep it alive and active for them to enjoy all the positives that come out of showing cattle.

How has World Dairy Expo benefited you in your dairy career? It’s been a place where I have progressed my business. I would say World Dairy Expo plays one of the largest aspects in what my dairy career is, whether it’s meeting people, seeing cattle or coming together with what we love the most.

What topic would you like to see at future shows?

Learn more on-farm building management. We have started our own farm, although I’ve worked for a lot of people. This year, my wife and I plan to visit some of the booths to learn things from different teat dips, TMR mixers, all these different aspects that we haven’t taken on before.
