Together from the start

Twin brothers begin dairying career

BIRCHWOOD, Wis. – Farming with family can be difcult at times, but brothers Kevin and Jacob Henk say they haven’t had many challenges working with each other.

After all, they’ve had each other’s backs since before they were born.

The Henk brothers, twins in their early 20s, started milking 100 cows near Birchwood, Wis., last year and said the best part of farming together is just that – being together.

“We’ve had no challenges working together so far,” Kevin said. “It’s going very well so far.”

The brothers grew up on their family’s farm, where they milked 30 cows with their dad, Howard, who still farms on the home place near Stone Lake, Wis. “It’s denitely been a lifelong dream to farm,” Jacob said.

After high school, they began milking for their uncle, Dale Pederson, who milks 60

cows north of Hayward, Wis., and added a few more herds to their resume after that.

“The biggest thing we learned working for Dale was watching how well he took care of his calves,” Kevin said.

“He raised them in hutches, and they were always clean and well fed. Even as older heifers, he kept them clean and well fed, and they seemed to grow better that way.”

When the opportunity to transition into a farm of their own popped up, Kevin and Jacob jumped on it. Their uncle, Ken Henk, was milking 100 cows in a swing-5 parlor and a freestall barn and was looking for someone to take over.

However, the twins encountered some snags in the beginning – no one would give them a loan or help them secure nancing to buy into their uncle’s farm.

“No banks would give us a loan, and FSA turned us down,” Jacob said. “We didn’t have credit scores or farm ownership history, so we worked out a land contract with Ken.” The land contract, which started the rst of November, took hold when they bought the cows from their uncle as well as the 40 acres that the farm buildings are located on.

their elderly neighbor with her herd of 20 dairy cows.

“We also help out Dad every chance we get,” Jacob said.

Their cows are housed in the freestall all year and bedded with a chopped wood shavings product manufactured in nearby Rice Lake, Wis. They

average around 60 pounds a day with 3.95 percent butterfat and 3.2 percent protein.

“We like the [shavings].

We’d like to bed with sand if we could, but our manure pit can’t handle it,” Kevin said.

about raising calves from their Uncle Dale carried over into the calf barn, which was the former stall barn that Ken converted into youngstock housing. Calves are deeply bedded with the same type of shavings that the cows lounge on and are fed whole milk twice a day.

In addition to their dairy operation, two young bull calves in a former box stall also signal the beginning of a new enterprise for the Henks.

“We’d like to begin raising steers and see where that goes,” Kevin said.

Both brothers’ answers regarding their optimism toward milk prices was emphatic and resounding.

“Yes, we’re still optimistic,” Kevin said. “Next year isn’t looking good, but we’ll just do our best.”

That optimism is fueling their goals

to take their reality, which was once a dream, and make it better together.

“We want to improve cow comfort, put better mattresses in the freestall barn and add on to the bunker so we have more feed storage,” Kevin said.

“We’d like to increase our production and put up better feed, which was a challenge this year with all the rain we got.”

With clear goals for the future, a helpful family, faith that things will get better and, best of all, their best friend by their side every step of the way, Kevin and Jacob Henk are taking something great and making it better together.

“We’re really thankful for Ken helping us out,” Jacob said. “We couldn’t do it without him and the land contract.”

Best Milking Practices online course available

Professionals in the dairy industry who want to learn about problems on dairy farms that result from mastitis now have the opportunity to take an online course at their convenience offered by Penn State Extension.

“Best Milking Practices” is a self-paced course primarily designed for dairy producers, employees and managers that teaches concepts to help them measure and reduce levels of mastitis, and it offers practical solutions to help apply that knowledge to milking practices.

Mastitis is a common and expensive problem on dairy farms. It is, on average, costlier than veterinary care, food, housing or equipment maintenance.

To maximize a dairy’s protability, it’s important for producers to learn as much about mastitis as possible to reduce or eliminate the spread of it on their farm.

The course includes eight sections: Mastitis Basics, Cleanliness, Handling Cows, Pre-milking Prep, Milking and Post-milking, Managing Infection, CMT and On-farm Culturing, and Standard Operating Procedures.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to understand the importance of early detection of clinical mastitis; increase knowledge about cleanliness and SCC; recognize the importance of consistency in preventing clinical mastitis; understand the relationship between milk let-down and oxytocin vs. adrenaline; and develop a standard milking procedure that has a lag time of 60-90 seconds.

Participants also will be able to implement best milking practices using the strip cup, pre-stripping, milking gloves, and the CMT test; gain a better understanding of on-farm culturing and its usefulness; and recognize the importance of developing standard operating procedures.

“This course will help to increase productivity and protability on dairies that participate,” said Amber Yutzy, a dairy herd health educator in Huntingdon County, who specializes in dairy cattle milk quality and udder health. “We will cover the different causes of and types of mastitis, how you can better prevent mastitis, equipment types and use for avoiding mastitis, and the importance of early detection of clinical mastitis.”

Additionally, participants will learn about the importance of reduced antibiotic use to treat mastitis, how to properly implement an on-farm mastitis culturing program, how to accurately identify bacteria and how to make educated treatment decisions to aid in increasing protability.

“Participants can put all of this information together and learn how to come up with a standard operating procedure list that is tailored to their farm,” Yutzy said.

“By the end of this course, participants will understand the importance of proper milking procedure, become familiar with how to perform a CMT test, appreciate the importance of consistency in cow treatment, recognize different bacteria that cause mastitis, and be comfortable with on-farm culturing.”

Growing and improving Despite challenges, Rybinski Dairy continues to expand their operation

HENDRICKS, Minn. – Growth and improvement are two prime goals for Kevin and Lisa Marie Rybinski, who managed to accomplish both during this past year.

The Rybinskis, who have three children, Ryker, 6, Ryanna, 4, and Rylissa, 2, milk 160 cows on their dairy near Hendricks, Minn. Along with an addition onto their freestall barn, they also switched the barn’s ventilation system, traded out sand bedding for waterbeds, installed a new parlor and made a change to better manage their water supply situation.

Their cows have responded favorably to the recent improvements. The average milk production has increased by 8-10 pounds per head per day since August and is now at about 84 pounds per head each day. Somatic cell count has also dropped.

“My only regret about the expansion and upgrade is that we didn’t do it years ago,” Kevin said.

Their herd of 160 cows is a jump from the 50 head they were milking in 1998 when Kevin joined the operation shortly after graduating from high school. At that time, the Rybinskis had built a new freestall barn and parlor facility.

When the family decided to make upgrades to their dairy last year, they were milking 110 cows.

“Our barn wasn’t big enough to house our entire milk herd, so some of our cows had to be

kept outside,” Kevin said. “We were bedding our freestalls with sand, but didn’t have the ability to recover any of the waste sand. The costs of buying sand and the difculty of handling waste sand were a problem.”

breeze for the cows,” Kevin said. “We weren’t really happy with how that system was working.”

Their expansion and upgrading plan included an addition to the east end of the freestall barn, creating room for 50 more stalls. Two of the main focuses of the addition were on the ventilation and stall bedding. They switched from side curtains and stir fans to tunnel ventilation while they also converted their stalls from sand bedding to waterbeds.

“Cow comfort was our top consideration,” said Lisa Marie, who is employed off the farm along with her duties on the dairy. “We wanted to make sure that our cows have an environment that is clean and dry and has plenty of airow.”

Another problem the Rybinskis’ tackled during their expansion was their farm’s water supply.

“We are at the end of the

line in our rural water system,” Kevin said. “When there was high water demand upstream of us, it would take us ve minutes to ll a vegallon bucket. We knew that we had to do something if we wanted to increase the size of our herd.”

The Rybinskis installed a pair of 6,000-gallon water tanks in their utility room.

Water from their plate cooler is diverted to these tanks.

Float valves ensure the tanks are constantly kept full. A set of pumps draw water from the tanks and provide a plentiful water supply for the Rybinskis’ herd. As an added bonus, their cows now get to drink warm water from their fountains.

During their facility upgrade, the Rybinskis encountered challenges, including a curveball from Mother Nature. A hailstorm hit their farm on June 22, 2016, which completely wiped out their crops and left most of their buildings heavily damaged. ““The hail was so thick on the ground, we had to move some of it with the skid loader,” Kevin said.

“We installed an underground pit that can hold up to 20 days’ worth of manure,” Kevin said. “Before, we had to haul manure on a daily basis. It’s nice to have the exibility to haul manure when it’s convenient for us or to store it when the weather keeps us out of the eld.”

Between their farming operation and their kids’ activities, the Rybinski family stays busy. A pair of hired men helps make sure everything keeps running smoothly.

“We couldn’t do it without our employees,” said Kevin, whose cousin, Alan Rybinski, and nephew, Cory Rybinski, work for the dairy on a part-time basis.

Like his father, Kevin believes in maintaining a diversied operation. In addition to their dairy, the Rybinskis operate a custom silage chopping business and have a herd of stock cows.

But it is hard to imagine a day at Rybinski Dairy that is not full of activity, with the continued goal to constantly strive toward growth and improvement.

The advantages of automation Women discuss on-farm technology at business conference

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – In a search to nd more time and greater prots, three women made their discovery in automating their dairy systems.

Stephanie (Nussbaum) Tighe, of Garretson, S.D.; Merri Post, of Chandler, Minn.; and Kathy Verhoek, of Lake Norden, S.D., shared their experiences with onfarm technology in a panel discussion during the Central Plains Dairy Expo’s Women’s Business Conference Nov. 14 in Sioux Falls, S.D. “The farm is more labor efcient, more energy efcient and more intriguing for young people,” said Tighe, who milks with two robots at her family’s farm, Cottonwood Ridge Dairy.

Tighe’s family made the expansion from their 97cow tiestall barn in 2014, shortly after Tighe returned to the farm following college graduation. Since the expansion to a tunnelventilated freestall barn with

automated feed pushers, brushes and alley scrapers, the herd has thrived and the family is reaping the benets.

“The main advantage for our family is exibility,” Tighe said. “We get to manage the cows and have more time to spend together.”

Unlike the addition of robots for Tighe’s return to the operation, Post and her husband, Bill, incorporated automated technology to account for the loss of help.

In 2012, the Posts built a turnkey freestall barn equipped with two robotic milkers and a feed pusher.

Three years later, the vacant 60-stall stanchion barn was remodeled to a calf housing facility with automatic calf feeders.

“It was not feasible to stay in the stanchion barn.

We needed to do something different in the facilities, and for my husband,” Post said. “When our kids left for school, we then needed to ask ourselves the question, ‘What is our long-term goal?’

We had to look at what really makes sense in 20 years.”

While Post and her husband found a solution to their long-term goals in technology, so did Drumgoon Dairy with Verhoek as the parlor manager.

Verhoek joined the dairy in 2007, when she and her husband sold their herd to Rodney and Dorothy Elliot, owners of Drumgoon Dairy.

“We rely on people just as well as we rely on the technology,” Verhoek said of the 23 employees she supervises.

The herd is monitored through three software programs – one in the milking parlor, an activity monitoring system using tracking collars, as well as Dairy Comp 305 to review all data entry.

“With the technology, I can manage youngstock, production and keep up with our calves in Kansas. …

We’ve evolved quite a bit,” Verhoek said.

The panelists each had their own reasons for implementing the newer technology – from labor efciency and consistency to better time management and record keeping.

However, Tighe, Post and Verhoek all agreed the technologies have made them better farmers.

“With robots, we have a little more wiggle room in our day,” Tighe said.

“We put up better forages this year than we ever did before,” she said. “Because we can ex our time, we didn’t have to stop in the eld because chores had to be done.”

The technologies have also become commonplace in the operations.

“I rely heavily on computer programs from ordering medicines to determining how many calves or cows are scheduled for vaccinations, and also in making culling decisions,” Verhoek said.

However, challenges are inevitable when working with technology, as the panelists have learned.

While Tighe and Post have

had minimal breakdowns with the automated milking systems, they have had their share of time when cows could not be milked.

“The [cleaning system] that sterilizes the teat cup between each cow went out once, and we were down for six hours. The cows were lined up and we had to get them milking,” Post said. “We’ve become accustomed to the mindset that when the robots are down, you work until it’s up.”

Tighe agreed.

“Most problems are pretty easy to solve by yourself – once you take it apart once, you can do it again,” she said. “To ensure everything is operating correctly, we do a nightly maintenance, checking the lasers, hoses and lenses.”

Through trial and error, Verhoek and her employers have learned what technology works best for their operation – from feeding systems to record keeping.

Technology has also helped the panelists nd weak spots in their protocols.

When Post’s son left for college, the farm noticed a spike in their somatic cell count (SCC); an increase Post attributes to the absence of her son’s particular attention to detail.

“I wasn’t making enough money off the farm to cover what we were losing, and that’s when I came back to the farm,” Post said. “Now, we’re doing a much better job.”

In Verhoek’s role, with the incorporation of monitoring systems for the cattle, she can spend additional time further training the farm’s employees.

“We’re proud of our 115,000 SCC, but our protocols are very strong. We strip the cows two to three times and dry with microber towels,” Verhoek said. “Daily, we show employees how they are doing and it becomes a game between the two barns.”

When protocols are not followed, the monitoring systems warn Verhoek of high conductivity.

Overall, the on-farm technology Tighe, Post and Verhoek use daily has continually contributed to better cow comfort and greater production, and most importantly, the exibility these women needed to improve their dairy farm’s bottom line.

MEDFORD, Wis. – Before Joe Tomandl was a dairy farmer, he was an agriculture teacher.

“I started seeing fewer and fewer kids straight off the farm in my classes,” Tomandl said. “I taught ag for four years before I started farming, and my wife taught for two years. Managed grazing was pretty much the only way we could even get started in farming by allowing us to focus the cash on the cows. New farmers face signicant barriers and are not entering the industry at a rate that offsets the loss of retiring producers.”

Tomandl, who milks and grazes 330 cows on two farms a few miles east of Medford, Wis., with his wife, Christy, is staying plenty busy these days as the

executive director of the Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship (DGA).

DGA, the rst formal apprenticeship for farming in the United States, matches certied master graziers with apprenticeship candidates looking to start their own grass-based dairy farm in the future or transition into an existing operation.

“Apprentices graduate to certied journey grazier status, receive additional support services as they advance in their career, and have the option of eventually becoming master graziers and taking on apprentices themselves in this unique farmer training program,” Tomandl said.

The brainchild for DGA came about in 2009, to shine a light on farm loss and keeping rural communities vibrant.

Between the number of American dairy farms shrinking by 5 to 10 percent each year, and the average age of farmers being 59 years old, with many farmers not having an identied successor, Tomandl felt something had to be done.

ConƟnued from DGA | Page 10 “The whole idea was to address rural communities and farms, as we’re losing about 500 dairy farms every year in Wisconsin,” Tomandl said. “When every farm operates exactly the same, the dairy industry becomes brittle.

The idea of a diverse and robust dairy industry comes from having farms that aren’t all the same, and that’s what makes the industry strong.”

Tomandl realized farming skills were not best taught in a classroom. He and a group of 15 dairy graziers and other grazing experts came together to look at the concept of creating a pathway that would link retiring master graziers with young aspiring farmers looking to learn about grazing, while including some element of continuing education.

“The reality is, it’s difcult to teach a farmer in the classroom,” Tomandl

said. “That’s when it clicked that a formal apprenticeship was the way to go.”

After their core group created its industry standards and earned a small development grant to explore their idea, the DGA was born. The apprenticeship portion is two years long with 4,000 hours of hands-on instruction and paid employment from the master grazier that is teaching and training the apprentice.

On top of the apprenticeship, 288 hours of online and in-person continuing education with courses in pasture management, milk quality, herd health, dairy nutrition, farm nancial management and soils, nutrients and composting dovetail with the apprenticeship to enhance skills learned on the farm.

In order to make dairy grazing

approved for apprenticeship, DGA had to be registered with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development.

“They were elated,” Tomandl said. “No one in agriculture had done this before, and it was real workforce development.”

In 2010, DGA secured a Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Grant through the USDA’s National Institute for Food and Agriculture, which helped to spearhead the new program through its infancy.

“It’s growing really well now, but we were careful in the early years to not push too fast so we could develop a solid platform,” Tomandl said.

“We didn’t want it to be a ash in the pan, and we didn’t just want to be in Wisconsin, either.”

In order to take the program

nationwide, DGA registered with the Federal Department of Labor, as well.

“We are really growing quick now that we’re registered at the federal level,” Tomandl said.

In 2010, DGA had zero master dairy training sites enrolled, as the organization refers to its farms where apprentices are being trained. As of December 2017, the organization has now grown to include over 140 farms across the United States, with 243 apprenticeship candidates looking for placement.

“We have graduated 18 journey graziers, and have 45 in training right now,” Tomandl said.

“When a farmer comes on board, they apply online. We gure out where they are and assign an education coordinator from their region, who will visit the farm and send a report to our national committee,” Tomandl said.

“Then, after they are approved, we match masters and candidates on our linking site.”

Master graziers can use the linking site to choose potential apprenticeship candidates based on their desired location and management styles, among other factors. After being linked, masters will interview apprenticeship candidates on the farm to make sure they’re just as good a t in person as they appear to be online.

“Then, if they do prove to be a good match and the master hires the candidate, the apprenticeship program begins,” Tomandl said. “Our education coordinators on the ground will visit the farm once a month to see how things

are going and to offer their support to both the apprentice and the master. We are training masters and successors.”

The DGA’s linking site and dashboard not only tells Tomandl the number of candidates seeking entry into the program, but also how many hours apprentices have logged and how much they are being paid.

Tomandl has two apprentices himself, one on each of his farms, and one will eventually be Tomandl’s successor on the main farm.

“My very rst apprentice just started dairying on his own this August, so that was pretty cool,” Tomandl said.

Providing a lane of opportunity for young farmers to enter the industry, and retiring farmers to have someone to pass the farm down to, has been a rewarding labor of love for Tomandl.

“We’re looking for farmers who are not only good farmers, but also good teachers that care about training the next generation,” Tomandl said.

Get to know Kate Spadgenske of Menahga, Minn.

What dairy or extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am the president of the FFA chapter. In FFA, I compete on the dairy cattle evaluation CDE. I’m also the president of my 4-H club. In 4-H, I show dairy cattle and market lambs with my two younger brothers at the Becker County Fair.

younger, I was shy. I was so shy that even when people would say hi to me, I’d run for cover behind my mom or dad to avoid conversation. Even the lunch ladies and the teachers at school would call me Smiley because I wouldn’t even smile or talk to them.

Who do you look up to? My dad. I really appreciate the work my dad has put forth to get our farm where it is. A lot of the things I’ve learned about farming I can thank my dad for. I know my passion for farming comes from my dad. I can thank my dad for the big things like learning how to work the tractors in the elds and even the little things like counting towels in the parlor.

Many of my best memories are spent with my dad in the barn, in the eld or in the cab of one of our tractors.

Why are you involved in these activities/ organizations and what is your favorite?

4-H and FFA give me the chance to excel in something I’m interested and passionate about. Both organizations have impacted my life greatly, but my favorite is 4-H. There’s just something about getting to exhibit one of your animals at the Minnesota State Fair during the 4-H encampment that makes all that hard work with your livestock worthwhile.

Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. In 2016, I was a Minnesota delegate for the National 4-H Dairy Conference held in Madison, Wis. Not only did we get to see the outstanding cows exhibited at World Dairy Expo, but also got to experience the Hoard’s Dairyman Farm, the National Dairy Shrine Museum, Nasco, ABS Genetics and Crave Brothers Farm. We also heard from speakers from the industry and learned how we all impact the industry. I made numerous lifelong friends who share the same passion for the dairy industry as me. It was hands down the best experience I’ve ever had the chance to take.

What’s your favorite social media? Instagram. I follow a lot of ag related pages, such as Select Sires and Peterson Farm Brothers.

A lot of dairy farms have Instagram, and it’s interesting to see what they do on their farm. A lot of people I’ve met through 4-H and FFA have Instagram, so it’s fun to stay up to date with them.

Tell us some of your duties on the farm.

I milk cows and feed calves when needed.

During the summer months, I help with the eld work. When I was 15, I started working at Hendrickx Family Farms where I milk cows and feed calves on the weekends during the school year.

What are your career aspirations? I plan on attending South Dakota State University, majoring in dairy production. After I complete college, I plan on staying active in the dairy industry. I’m interested in genetics and show cattle and want to keep working with show cattle in the future.

One of the biggest impacts I’ve noticed is how I’ve grown as a leader. A lot of people look up to you when you hold ofcer positions in high school. You have to step up and be a role model for everyone and what better way to be a role model then by representing agriculture.

What is something you’ve learned from being in these activities/organizations?

People today are three generations removed from the farm; because of that it’s easy for people to spread false information and even easier for others to believe it. We all help change the view of agriculture by sharing the truth. We all know what we do on the farm and that the cows are our livelihood. We all need to help consumers understand this, too. It could be as easy as sitting down with someone over a cup of coffee, explaining to them what we do or even inviting people to our farms for tours so they can see what it’s like on the farm.

Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? My favorite animal is a cow because I can milk it and get milk to drink, because fresh milk is one of my favorite drinks.

What do you want to be when you grow up? I don’t know, maybe I want to be a farmer so I can keep the family farm running for lots of generations.

When do you do chores and what chores do you do? In the morning I feed the puppy.

Hollermann interns in Australia, aspires to continue family farm

BURTRUM, Minn. – Many college students prime their resume and search for the perfect internship. For Megan Hollermann, the 19-year-old Burtrum, Minn., native, an opportunity to travel to and work in Australia merely came about.

Hollermann, a second-year dairy management student at Ridgewater College, Willmar, Minn., recently returned from Moxey Farms in Gooloogong, New South Wales, where she interned during October.

During her spring 2017 hoof trimming class, Hollermann was given a task.

“Karl Burgi, a world-renowned hoof trimmer was in the class,” Hollermann said. “He handed me this cadaver hoof and told me to trim it. … He was surprised because I knew how to do that, and I did it in a timely manner.”

At the end of class, Burgi gave the class an opportunity for a fall internship.

One that would take Hollermann across the globe to the land down under:

Australia.

“I thought, ‘I am from some little dairy farm from a town of 200, and I’m going to go to Australia.’ It was amazing to me,” Hollermann said.

The opportunity would prove to be vastly unlike her home.

Apart from herself, Hollermann Family Dairy – owned and operated by parents Shawn and Debbie Hollermann, along with brothers Dylan, 17, and Mason, 14 – milks 400 Holsteins three times a day in a double-8 herringbone parlor.

The herd is fed a TMR comprised of haylage, corn silage, soybean meal, a protein mix and high moisture corn.

Operations continue with help from family and seven full-time employees.

Besides attending college and working on her home farm, Hollermann is a relief A.I. technician for Genex.

She is also active in her college’s Postsecondary Agricultural Student organization. Hollermann placed her responsibilities on hold and began her internship at Moxey Farms Oct. 9.

“When I rst arrived on the farm, I did a mix of everything,” Hollermann said. “At one point in the day I was breeding cows and at another point I was with the health team. I was a jack of all trades” The 7,000 Holsteins are milked Turn to HOLLERMANN | Page 18

three times a day in a double-50 parallel parlor and an 80-stall carousel.

“It was massive,” Hollermann said.

“I could never replace the image of cows everywhere.”

The herd is fed a ration similar to that of Hollermann’s, however, oranges are fed as an energy source.

Hollermann said she spent the most time in the maternity ward, but did also gain experience on the farm’s health team where she conducted fresh cow checks.

The maternity ward, Hollermann said, housed 1,000 cows with an average of 13 calves born each day.

“One day I had 26 calves in a 12hour period,” she said.

Hollermann lived on the farm site in the main house, while the 40-some back packers who are employed to conduct daily milkings lived in separate provided housing.

“They get a lot of people from Ireland, England, Spain. … There was a lot of different cultures there,” Hollermann said. “It shocked me. I gured going to Australia I would experience a different culture, but I didn’t expect quite that much.”

Apart from the culture shock, the farm’s open barns were a surprise.

“Having open barns and being there in October and November and it’s 80 degrees; it was so different,” she said.

“I wasn’t used to working in an open barn all day.”

While everyone at the farm spoke English, the accents were varying.

“For about the rst week and a half to two weeks, it was spent trying to understand everyone. You have an Irish accent here an Australian accent here. … That was the biggest struggle, trying to gure out what terms were different, and how they say when a cow is sick.”

There was, however, a common bond.

“When I rst got there, I will never forget how they were always making jokes and always having fun,” Hollermann said.

The positive atmosphere is something Hollermann said she will never forget.

“Even to this day, it sends chills down my back,” Hollermann said of how those at the farm worked as a team.

“They didn’t make work feel like work.

When I am at home, it is my job. …

I have never been quite that excited to go to work at the beginning of the day.

It was quite amazing how there were so many different cultures there, and they still learned how to put aside their differences and work together.”

Hollermann returned from her internship in November, and has plans to one day take over her family dairy farm.

For anyone considering an internship, Hollermann has some advice: take the opportunity.

“I believe that everyone should do something like this,” she said. “If you are planning to go back to the farm, that’s great. But, you never know what you are missing until you do something like this. Even if it is just out of state. I am not ready to marry the farm. I think you … need to understand that there might be something more out there.”

Hollermann has no regrets about her time spent overseas and is thankful for the opportunity.

“At least I know I did this and I chose the farm, and then I am not constantly looking back and saying I wish I would have done that. … It is quite outstanding how much I enjoyed working for those people.”

Consider milk culturing for better mastitis management

Fighting mastitis on your dairy can be a difcult task. For one cow, a treatment will work great and she’s back to normal in a short amount of time. For another cow, that same treatment may have little to no success, and you’re left scratching head about what to do next to help this cow. This would be the perfect time for you to start doing milk sample bacterial cultures on your cows. Why is this helpful? Well it’s only way to 100 percent diagnose infectious mastitis, but--more importantly--it identies the causative organism. Back to our cow we can’t clear up the infection on: it is possible her mastitis was caused by a different pathogen than her herdmate’s was. The mastitis tube you treated the rst cow with may not be effective against the pathogen the second cow has.

Milk culturing can be done through the DHIA, so be sure to ask your eld rep about it on your next test day.

Collecting a sample is easy to do and doesn’t take a lot of extra time; simply milk the sample from a clean, dry teat into a clean and dry tube. After you have collected the sample, keep it cold until it can be picked up or delivered.

If you aren’t convinced individual cow culturing is for you, then you can try doing a bulk tank culture.

Bulk tank culturing is still a useful tool because it can help determine the general types of bacteria present

in cows within a herd, as well as the amount of exposure to environmental bacteria. Bulk tank culturing is a rapid, inexpensive way to determine some types of information when trying to troubleshoot problems in the dairy herd or for monitoring exposure.

When collecting a bulk tank sample to send in, you will want to take a sample ve days in a row. This will improve the accuracy of your test result. Each of the ve days, agitate the tank 5-10 minutes before sampling.

Be sure you use a clean dipper and don’t be afraid to ask your milk truck driver if you have any questions about the procedure, as they have lots of experience taking tank samples.

Since you are taking 5 days’ worth of samples, you will want to freeze each sample to discourage bacteria growth.

Milk expands when it freezes, so only ll the sample tube about half full. If you need to ship the samples yourself, make sure they are packed in a way that will keep them frozen. Labs can only test samples that arrive frozen or cold.

Doing a milk sample bacterial culture of your individual cows or even your bulk tank will help you determine what pathogens you are ghting as well as the environmental exposure of your herd. Bulk tank samples especially are very economical, but you will nd individual samples can be cost effective as well, as you won’t be wasting time or money on mastitis tubes that won’t work.

Minnesota Organic Conference keynote speakers announced Minnesota Organic Conference organizers have announced the 2018 conference keynote speakers for Jan, 11 and 12 in St. Cloud. Farmer, author, and urban agriculture visionary Michael Ableman will present “A Place at the Table” on Jan. 11. University of Vermont Extension Agronomist and organic farmer Heather Darby will present “From Milk to Milkweed: A Vermont Farmer’s Journey to Organic” on Jan. 12.

Michael Ableman is considered one of the founders of the Urban Agriculture movement, and pioneered the sustainable and organic agriculture movements.

As the co-founder and director of Sole Food Street Farms, Ableman empowers individuals managing poverty and addiction by providing employment opportunities. Active in both Canada and the U.S., Ableman has been farming since the 1970s. In addition to providing the keynote speech on Thursday of the conference, Ableman will also present a breakout session on the business viability of urban agriculture on Friday.

Heather Darby, an Extension Agronomist with the University of Vermont, has worked with organic farmers for the past 15 years. In addition to applied research and outreach programs on crop and forage production and soil management, Darby owns and operates a diversied organic farm. Darby’s work centered on environmental health won her the Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence in 2010. Darby will share her own experiences as an organic farmer during her keynote speech on Friday of the conference; she will also present breakout sessions throughout the conference on soil health, and organic production of ber and oil crops.

American Guernsey Association, Holstein Association USA partner for a multi-breed classication program The American Guernsey Association (AGA) is pleased to announce a partnership with Holstein Association USA (HAUSA) to appraise Guernsey cattle throughout the United States. This partnership leverages the capabilities of both our organizations in support of our members. It will go a long way in supporting the progress of our Guernsey Breed. The process has shown clearly to us that Holstein is committed to a multi-breed program which will value and ensure the integrity of the uniqueness of the Guernsey breed. This partnership will provide us access to a wide range of state of the art services as well as great reliable feedback to our members so that they can make informed breeding and management decisions. Their current program aligns nicely with our own breakdowns and offers in depth trait breakdowns and research traits that will provide more information for our breed and breeders. I would like to thank the Holstein Leadership, the Guernsey Board of Directors and the Guernsey Type committee for their support and contribution to the realization of the partnership,” said Doug Granitz, AGA CEO/Executive Secretary.

Training sessions will be scheduled this winter for HAUSA classiers, under the direction of members of the Guernsey type committee. HAUSA classiers will begin scoring in select Guernsey herds in February with the full schedule instituted in March. Additional training will be held at the HAUSA classier conference this spring.

Wisconsin State Fair Dairy Promotion Board scholarships available The Wisconsin State Fair Dairy Promotion Board is offering $1,000 scholarships to be used during the second semester of the 2018-19 school year.

Third and fourth-year college students pursuing dairy-related or food science degrees at one of Wisconsin’s four-year universities are eligible to apply.

Additional scholarships will be available to high school seniors planning to pursue a dairy-related or food science degree at one of Wisconsin’s four-year universities or students studying in a two-year, technical school program related to dairy or food science.

Applicants will be evaluated on involvement and leadership in dairyrelated activities, scholastic achievement, and career objectives. Finalists will be interviewed in mid-April, with the recipients to be recognized at the 2018 Wisconsin State Fair.

Free farmland rental agreement meetings are being provided by the University of Minnesota Extension.

Farm land rental rates have started to lower as corn and soybean prices continue lower in 2017. Determining a fair farm rent agreement is a challenge in today’s economy with current signicantly lower corn and soybeans prices in 2017 compared to recent record corn and soybean prices and record farm land values.

Negotiating a fair rental agreement that satises the land owner and the farmer is a challenge. David Bau and Nathan Hulinsky, Extension Educators in Ag Business Management, will provide several ways; by examples, factsheets and worksheets to determine a fair farm land rental rate for both parties.

Topics covered at the meetings will include local historic and projected farmland rental rate trends, current farm land values and sales, a worksheet that will help determine a fair rental agreement. Input costs for 2018 will be presented along with current 2018 corn and soybean prices.

Worksheets will examine 2018 costs and what is affordable rent that a farmer will be able to pay in 2018, the rate of return to the landlord at current market values and examine exible rental agreements.

Make plans to attend one of these meetings now. Attendees will receive several informative worksheets and factsheets that will help to determine what is a fair 2018 farm land rental rate is.

“Leadership for Successful Employee Management”, a labor management workshop, will be taught at the St. Charles City Hall. Nathan Hulinsky, Extension Educator; Bob Milligan, Professor Emeritus; and other Extension educators will teach the three session course. The workshop will feature a wide variety employee management topics aimed at helping farms attract and retain employees.

Through hands-on activities, tool development, and class discussions, participants will create an employee handbook and build leadership skills. Classes meet on Dec. 11, Dec. 21, and Jan. 4, 2018 with webinars on Dec. 18 and Jan. 11.

Each class meets from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Two one-hour webinars will be held in between classes to discuss implementation of course tools and foster further learning. Cost is $45/ person and $70/farm due to sponsorship and grantor funds.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will offer a new program for female beef and dairy producers held in northeast Iowa starting in January. “Boots in the Barn” is a three-part series for women involved in cattle production. Three workshops will be offered on Jan. 4, 11 and 18. Dairy topics will be discussed from 1-3 p.m. and beef topics from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Three counties in Iowa -Clayton, Delaware, Dubuque -- are home to 25 percent of Iowa’s dairy herds and 5 percent of Iowa’s beef cow herds.

Dairy and beef production have a lot in common, such as reproduction and basic ruminant nutrition. However, they have slightly different perspectives, such as nutritional requirements for maximum milk production, feed quality requirements, and grazing options.
