RIDGEWAY, Minn. – When it comes to their dairy, Glen and Melinda Groth know they have to treat it like a business rst and a lifestyle second.

“One of the best quotes I have heard came from college. ‘Farming as a lifestyle is poor business, but farming as a business is a great lifestyle.’

I consider us to be more business focused to provide for the lifestyle,” Glen said.

The Groths, who have two daughters, Ellery, 2, and Addison, 1, were recently awarded the 2017 Minnesota Farm Bureau Achievement Award and will represent the state in the national contest at the national Farm Bureau convention in January in Nashville, Tenn. The family milks 65 cows on their Winona County dairy near Ridgeway, Minn.

The judging of the award is based on 200 points: 70 points for farm operation and growth, 60 points for nancial progress of the operation, 40 points for Farm Bureau leadership and 30 points for other leadership.

Glen is the fth generation in his family to continue the farm, returning home after he graduated in 2005 from the University of WisconsinRiver Falls with a dairy science degree. When he rst started dairying, Glen was in an informal partnership with his dad. Over the years, he slowly bought cattle from his dad and other dairy producers. He also started renting land to grow crops for additional income.

“As I took responsibility for more of the bills, I got more of the milk check,” Glen said.

He took over the nances in 2012.

After Glen and Melinda were married in 2014, the couple purchased the main farm in 2015 from Glen’s dad, who still rents them land and works on the farm every day.

While they do not claim to be the best farm in the industry, they feel they are on the right path to success.

“We’re cognizant of where we

put our money. We put our money in things we’re going to get a return off,” Glen said about how to stay on that path.

As examples, the Groths said having a manure pit would be nice, but it is not something that generates a quick return on investment so they need to wait to put one in. They also would prefer to own land, but they know they can grow crops cheaper while renting land. They also do not own other toys, such as boats or snowmobiles, and rarely take a vacation.

“We’re not nancial gurus or any better farmers than the next people, but I like to think that part of our nancial progress is because we pay attention to where our money is going and making sure it’s going to something we can get a return on investment,” Glen said.

They work closely with a farm business management instructor and seek input from their lender when needed.

To keep their mindset, Melinda said it is also important not to compare their farm to others.

“It’s not worth it to feel bad about what someone else has on their farm because their circumstances are different,” she said.

Glen agreed.

“Trying to obtain what other people have isn’t a good idea because you don’t know what advantages they had,” he said.

The couple is quick to acknowledge the advantages they had and thank the people who have helped them so far in their career.

“I didn’t start with much, but if my parents hadn’t owned our two farms I wouldn’t have had any land to start with, so that was a huge leg up. I can’t underestimate that. Without my parents … I wouldn’t have been farming,” Glen said.

The couple is also not afraid to seek help.

“I wasn’t in agriculture [after college]. I went to school for something else. I lost that [agricultural] network.

A life renewed Hamann recovers from heart transplant

When Hanna was born, she was diagnosed with interrupted aortic arch (IAA) type B – a congenital heart condition that limits blood ow from the heart to different organs in the body.

“The main artery didn’t grow together in the womb,” Alice said. “Her heart was pumping to a dead-end ever since it started pumping.”

Hanna’s condition resulted in several surgeries to manage the disconnect between her valve, but none fully eliminated the heart defect.

For the rst ve months of Hanna’s life, she remained hospitalized after undergoing a heart catheter procedure to conrm the defect, which resulted in a stroke. Nearly six months ago, Hanna underwent a life-saving surgery to replace her faulty heart with one that will allow the young girl to continue her life for many more years.

In the time since her June 12 transplant, Hanna is regaining her strength and becoming a more energized and engaging version of herself.

“My breathing had always been short, and I slept all the time. Now, I’m getting my energy back,” said Hanna, who is the daughter of Scott and Alice Hamann.

“Then, as if someone was really listening upstairs, the phone rang.”

The Hamanns – (from leŌ) Alice, Hanna and ScoƩ – have plenty to be thankful for this Christmas season as Hanna underwent a heart transplant June 12. The Hamanns milk 65 cows near Albany, Minn.

Hanna’s condition, in October 2015, the Hamanns traveled to the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minn., where Hanna had an aortic graft put in – a tube that traveled from the top of her heart down to her kidneys – to help with hypertension.

“She was the sixth person in the world that had this done, and she’s got the longest graft they have ever put in. They had to sew two tubes together,” Scott said.

Unfortunately, in the year that followed, Hanna’s condition did not improve.

“We went back two months after the stent was put in because her breathing was

back to what it was before,” Alice said. “We spent the following 10 months driving back and forth to Rochester.”

It was during these appointments that doctors conrmed Hanna had developed restrictive cardiomyopathy. This heart muscle disease results in blood pooling in the top chambers of the heart, ultimately causing heart failure.

“That’s why she was short of air,” Scott said. “The heart couldn’t get the blood through the lungs and it didn’t have the capacity to push blood through.

It was worn out.”

Alice agreed.

“With X-rays, you could see the [heart] chamber that wasn’t working. It was growing itself shut,” she said.

Hanna clearly remembers the day she was told she would need a heart transplant – it was Oct. 26, 2016, her 13th birthday.

“That was really sad news,” Hanna said. “I cried, and I was scared.”

As a parent, Alice was at a loss for words knowing her daughter needed a heart transplant – and soon.

You sit there and wish and pray and hope it gets here in time.”

Hanna was immediately put on the transplant list, where she was positioned on level B. “They started her out on the midlevel, and then when her need for oxygen became 24/7, it bumped her up the list a little more,” Scott said.

Soon after, Hanna began receiving medications through IV during all hours of the day. By this time, she only had enough energy to wake up for a small meal and drink, and then would spend the remainder of the day sleeping.

“I just remember watching Hanna and her struggles, praying they would nd something and it would work out for us,” Scott said. “You could see things were getting harder and she was weak, running out of energy.”

Then, on the evening of June 11, 2017, the Hamanns’ phone rang – their prayers had been answered at 10:30 p.m.

“I remember feeling overwhelmed that evening. Hanna had just went to bed and I was sitting there, feeling sorry for myself and wondering what we were going to do,” Alice said. “Then, as if someone was really listening upstairs, the phone rang.”

The Hamanns immediately gathered their belongings and headed to Rochester.

By the next morning, Hanna was prepped and entering the operating room.

“Anything could’ve gone wrong.

Her body could have rejected the new heart and she’d be on life support,” Alice said. “It went so smoothly … the heart and Hanna were made for each other.”

In the months following her heart transplant, Hanna remained at the hospital while she recovered. Her mother was alongside her as her dad returned home to continue milking cows.

“I missed them a great deal, but we kept in touch and called each other every day during dinner and before bed,” Scott said.

On Aug. 31, Hanna returned home and has slowly made strides towards a new normal. She attends school in the afternoons and is becoming more active by the day.

As Hanna recovers from her transplant, she has become an advocate for organ donating.

“Everybody can mark that box on their license so that somewhere, people get what they need,” Hanna said.

Because of an organ donor, the Hamanns have everything they need.

“A weight has been lifted off of our shoulders, and we have a lot to celebrate and be thankful for this Christmas,” Alice said. “She is in a good place, and we couldn’t have asked for more than for our daughter to be healthy.”

I had a big learning curve the rst few years. I picked up on things that a lot of my peers would have had the benet of time to learn.”

During this time, Melinda learned to make the best of what she had.

“Find out what your skill is or what you do really well and capitalize on that,” Melinda said as a piece of advice.

Along with managing their farms, the Groths have been active in Farm Bureau leadership among leadership positions in other agricultural and community organizations.

“It’s a way to make connections with other people in agriculture and a way to stand up for what we believe in,” Glen said. “It’s also a social outlet.”

Glen chaired the state Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ranchers committee in 2010 and Melinda is nishing her three-year term as one of the inaugural committee members for the promotion and education committee at the national level.

Class III, all-milk price expected to nish year lower Trend of weaker market to continue during 2018

Look for the 2017 U.S. all-milk price to nish this year somewhere between $17.65 and $17.75 per hundredweight (cwt.), according to the Nov. 20 dairy, poultry and livestock outlook report.

The new numbers are 10 cents lower than the most recent estimate from October. The outlook report comes from the USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS).

For the fourth quarter of 2017, the all-milk price forecast has also been lowered. Prices are now pegged at $17.85 to $18.15 per cwt. That’s a drop of 25 to 35 cents from a month earlier.

Meanwhile, the report’s authors said they expect the Class III milk price – the price paid for milk that’s made into cheese – to come in lower than expected during the nal three months of the year.

The new price range is $16.25 to $16.55 per cwt.

Cheese prices are expected to rise during the fourth quarter, according to the report. But those increases will probably be more than offset by lower whey prices, resulting in a lower Class III milk price.

Turning to the Class IV milk price, the ERS expects lower numbers for the fourth quarter of this year. Both butter prices and nonfat dry milk (NDM) prices are seen weakening, resulting in a Class IV forecast of $14.10 to $14.50 per cwt.

However, cheese prices are forecasted to strengthen during the year’s nal three months.

“Based on recent price strength,” said ERS economists, “the cheese price forecast has been raised for the fourth quarter to $1.70 to $1.73 per pound. With the recent downward movements in U.S. and international prices and high global stock levels, fourth-quarter price forecasts for

butter, NDM and dry whey have been lowered.”

The new butter price is expected to range between $2.295 and $2.355 per pound. For nonfat dry milk, the revised price range is pegged at 75.5 to 78.5 cents per pound. And for dry whey, the new forecast is 34.5 to 36.5 cents per pound.

Moving to dairy cow numbers, the ERS expects fewer head than projected earlier. The new forecast is for the U.S., as a whole, to have 9.44 million cows.

That’s down by 5,000 from the October prediction. The outlook reports said herd growth is still expected, but from a lower base.

While the cow number estimate has been lowered, so also has the average amount of milk each cow will produce during 2017.

“Milk per cow for the year has been lowered 55 pounds, to 23,280 pounds, in line with lower estimates for the fourth quarter of 2017 and lower expected milk prices,” according to the report. “Milk production in 2018 is now forecasted at 219.7 billion pounds, 0.7 billion pounds lower than last month’s projection.”

The ERS expects higher prices into 2018 for soybean meal, but a steady price range for corn. Soybean meal is forecasted at $295 to $335 per ton, while the corn price is expected to be $2.80 to $3.60 per bushel.

Looking at next year, the ERS said if forecasts for lower prices for NDM, dry whey and cheese prove accurate, milk prices will follow suit. Look for the Class III milk price to range between $15.50 and $16.40 per cwt. Likewise, look for the Class IV milk price to average $14.15 to $15.15 per cwt.

“The all-milk price forecast for 2018 is $16.90 to $17.80 per cwt., a reduction from the $17.45 to $18.35 forecast last month,” said the ERS. “The 2018 all-milk price is now projected to be 35 cents per cwt. lower during 2017.”

China lowers cheese tariffs, boosts U.S. exports

The Agriculture Department announced the November Federal order Class III benchmark milk price at $16.88 per hundredweight, up 19 cents from October, 12 cents above November 2016, and equates to $1.45 per gallon. It ties the February price for the highest Class III in 2017 and puts the 11 month Class III average at $16.24, up from $14.64 at this time a year ago and $15.92 in 2015.

Late Friday morning Class III futures portended a December price of $15.32, which would result in a 2017 average of $16.16, up from $14.87 in 2016 and $15.80 in 2015. The January 2018 contract was trading at $14.52; February, $14.60; and March was at $14.70, with the peak at just $15.90 in October.

The November Class IV price is $13.99, down 86 cents from October but 23 cents above a year ago and the lowest Class IV since November 2016. Its 11 month average stands at $15.31, up from $13.66 a year ago and $14.24 in 2015.

A higher All Milk price and lower soybean prices kept the October milk feed price ratio unchanged. October’s 2.45 is the same as September but compares to 2.38 in October 2016, according to the Agriculture Department’s latest Ag Prices report. The index is based on the current milk price in relationship to feed prices for a dairy ration consisting of 51 percent corn, 8 percent soybeans and 41 percent alfalfa hay. In other words, one pound of milk today purchases 2.45 pounds of dairy feed containing that blend.

The U.S. average All-Milk price was $17.90 per hundredweight (cwt.), up a dime from September and $1.20 above October 2016. Michigan showed the lowest, at $16.30, followed by New Mexico at $16.70, and California at $16.78, which was up 33 cents from September and $1.35 above a year ago. Wisconsin averaged $18.50, up 20 cents from September, $1.50 above a year ago, and $1.72 above California.

October corn averaged $3.26 per bushel, down a penny from September and 3 cents below October 2016. Soybeans averaged $9.18 per bushel, down 17 cents from September and 12 cents per bushel below a year ago. Alfalfa hay averaged $152 per ton, up $3 per ton from September and $17 per ton above a year ago.

Looking at the cow side of the ledger; the report shows the October cull price for beef and dairy combined averaged $65.40 per cwt., down $4.50 from September, after dropping $6.40 the previous month, dead even with October 2016, and $6.20 below the 2011 base average of $71.60.

The quarterly price received for milk cows averaged $1,610.00 per head in October, down $10 from July and $80.00 below October 2016. Wisconsin aver-

Meanwhile, the Crop Progress report shows 95 percent of U.S. corn has been harvested as of the week ending November 26, up from 90 percent the previous week but 3 percent behind a year ago and 3 percent behind the ve year average. Cotton is 79 percent harvested, up from 74 percent the previous week, 3 percent ahead of a year ago, and 1 percent behind the ve year average.

Cheddar block cheese fell to $1.55 per pound the rst day of trading following the Thanksgiving break, lowest spot price since September 1, 2017, but closed Friday December 1, at $1.5625, down 4 3/4-cents on the week and 24 3/4-cents below a year ago. The Cheddar barrels fell to $1.51 Wednesday but nished Friday at $1.5350, down 14 cents on the week and 8 cents below a year ago. Twenty two cars of block traded hands on the week and a whopping 62 of barrel.

Milk headed to Class III plants remained accessible following Thanksgiving weekend, reports Dairy Market News (DMN), and spot prices ranged from at market to $4 under Class. It adds that “Production schedules have increased to meet the current inux of milk. Mozzarella and provolone orders have slowed in the wake of the holiday, but are expected to return strongly through the rest of the year. Cheddar and traditional cheese makers report healthy demand, as endof-year holiday orders are underway,” however cheese prices are confounding Midwestern contacts because Thanksgiving Week and the following week saw barrel prices hovering above the blocks, something contacts typically view as “an indication of market instability.”

Cheese output in the West is also strong due to higher milk availability. Barrels and block supplies are abundant and inventories continue to increase. “Domestic cheese sales for 40 pound blocks are solid. Retail demand for cheese is doing well as some stores are packing for the end of the year holiday needs. However, a number of end users have their needs met and are not looking to purchase additional cheese soon. On the other hand, some reports suggest that spot prices for cheese are dropping, resulting in more interest from the international market.

Cheese sales and prices in the coming weeks will depend on how much stocks processors can afford to hold going into the New Year and how much buyers want or need to pay,” says DMN. Cash butter saw a Friday close at $2.2150 per pound, down three-quarter-cents on the week but 3

Fifteen cars exchanged hands on the week at the CME. DMN says butter production is fully active. Bulk butter has seen a little more interest of late but prices remained at 3 cents under to 7 cents over the CME average. The butter market tone is somewhat bearish, says DMN, and “some contacts suggest that market prices may continue to ebb slowly, but they are doubtful regarding a market destabilizing descent.”

Western butter makers report plenty of cream available to meet the remaining butter needs for 2017. Demand has been relatively steady, says DMN, but a few processors note that interest seems to be waning for the remainder of the year. Some buyers have met their needs for December and are focusing their attention to quoted prices for 2018.

Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk closed Friday at 72 cents per pound, up three-quarters but 28 3/4-cents below a year ago when it jumped 10 1/4-cents to $1.0075 per pound. Fifteen cars were sold on the week.

DMN reported that there were no new European Commission dairy policies nalized yet. “However, ongoing background discussions between the European Commission and various EU dairy involved parties continue to circle past the notion that some supply side action may be needed to address weaker dairy product prices because they are expected to result in lower farm milk pay prices.”

The EU continues efforts to maintain and expand dairy trade agreements with many other countries and talks between the EU and Chile began this week, focusing on updating 2003 dairy trade provisions.

The Consortium for Common Food Names (CCFN) called on Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay this week to “protect the interests of their local food producers and respect current international standards by rebufng EU efforts to conscate common food and beverage names.”

The CCFN is “sounding the alarm to governments from China and Japan to Mexico, and now South America,” about what it calls “the EU’s recent, systematic attempts to abuse geographical indications (GIs) protections.”

CCFN highlighted a number of common names that the Mercosur nations risk giving away to the EU as part of its current trade negotiations: asiago, black forest ham, bologna, brie, camembert, chorizo, edam, emmental, feta, fontina, gorgonzola, gouda, grana, gruyere, manchego, mozzarella, mortadella, parmesan, pecorino, prosciutto, provolone, romano, pancetta and salami, as well as common wine terms such as sherry, chablis and port.

“We oppose any new restrictions, including GI registrations, on the use of [these] commonly used terms of importance to Mercosur’s trading partners and domestic food industry,” the CCFN stated, describing the “colonial-like dominance the EU is attempting to exert in pushing for these economic restrictions that shortchange local producers and consumers.” CCFN also Turn to MIELKE | Page 11

“Secretary Perdue’s willingness to provide greater exibility to schools recognizes that a variety of milks and other healthy dairy foods is critically important to improving the nutritional contributions of child nutrition programs in schools,” said Jim Mulhern, president and CEO of the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF). “The math here is quite simple: More milk consumption equals better nutrition for America’s kids.”

Earlier this year, Congress passed the FY 2017 omnibus appropriations bill that included provisions to allow schools to offer low-fat avored milk. In addition, Reps. Glenn Thompson (R-PA) and Joe Courtney (D-CT) have introduced legislation, the School Milk Nutrition Act, to expand the ability of schools to offer various milk options. Their ongoing efforts in Congress have led to a greater awareness of the milk shortfall challenge in schools that today’s USDA action begins to address.

Students consumed 288 million fewer half-pints of milk from 2012-2015, even though public school enrollment was growing,” the two groups said.

“We appreciate the Secretary’s understanding that the regulatory process needed to move quickly so schools may include low-fat favored milk in their menu planning and procurement,” said Michael Dykes, D.V.M., president and CEO of the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA). “Today’s action will help reverse declining milk consumption by allowing schools

notes that “the EU is denying New World countries access to the EU market for foods that carry internationally recognized generic names, such as parmesan and feta.”

In another global development; China unilaterally lowered its cheese tariffs from 12 percent to 8 percent, effective Dec. 1, 2017. The U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC) says “The move will immediately boost U.S. export competitiveness in China and help U.S. suppliers take a larger role in meeting the nation’s booming cheese demand.”

USDEC president and CEO, Tom Vilsack, says “We are very pleased with China’s decision because it will help U.S. cheese exporters and manufacturers chip away the tariff disadvantage with other competitors. We are even more pleased that the process that yielded the decision helped to further cultivate trust and build critical relationships between the U.S. dairy industry and Chinese ofcial institutions, the nation’s dairy industry and customers.”

Speaking of China, the Daily Dairy Report (DDR) says Chinese imports continued to outpace those of a year ago. Milk powder outpaced 2016 levels by doubledigits once again, according to the DDR, and October saw imports of 43.7 million pounds of whole milk powder (WMP), nearly double the volumes from last year but 16 percent less than in September on a daily average basis.

Skim milk powder (SMP) also posted another strong performance with imports beating the prior year by 75 percent, according to the DDR, and “In total, China imported 35.1 million pounds, of SMP in October, with Year-to-date SMP imports up 35 percent from the same period a year ago.” Butterfat imports also “performed well,” according to the DDR. But the export market is not likely to come to our rescue. The dark clouds on dairy’s horizon aren’t allowing much light ahead, according to a generally optimistic Jerry Dryer, analyst/editor of the Dairy and Food Market Analyst.

Speaking in the Dec. 4 Dairy Radio Now interview, Dryer blamed over production of milk and under consumption of dairy products for the clouds. He pointed to issues of plant capacity being overwhelmed in this country and dumping of milk occasionally but said consumption is also “dragging its feet.”

Retail cheese sales in the rst nine months of 2017 were trailing those of a year ago, he said, and while exports are strong, “they can and should be stronger.”

He also warned that the U.S. is losing share in the world market.

When asked what bright spots he sees ahead he replied, “I don’t. There has to be some adjustment. Right now there’s a heavy cloud hanging over prospects for international trade and for growth,” referring to the renegotiation of the NAFTA, and he warned; “If that doesn’t all come together we’ll have a real mess in terms of product backing up into the U.S., so I’m having trouble nding a bright spot.”

In politics; U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue received accolades this week from the National Milk Producers Federation and the International Dairy Foods Association for allowing school districts to offer low-fat (1 percent) avored milk as part of the National School Lunch and School Breakfast programs.

After a lackluster start to the year, domestic cheese consumption appears to be gaining momentum.

Increasing demand and U.S. cheese exports have gone a long way toward consuming additional cheese output.

While the cheese market recently found equilibrium, challenges lie ahead in 2018 as new cheese capacity comes on line. To maintain balance, U.S. consumers need to eat more cheese or exports must equal or better current levels. Josi uses social media to share his story

TILLAMOOK, Ore. – Every morning, Derrick Josi gets up at the crack of dawn to run his family’s Wilsonview Dairy near the well-known dairy mecca of Tillamook, Ore. Tending to the Jerseys that call Wilsonview home is not the only job he tackles each day. Derrick takes on the additional task of educating the consuming public about the truth of life on a dairy

farm, blogging and posting on social media as the Tillamook Dairy Farmer.

Derrick operates the 500acre farm with his wife, Kaycee, and parents, Don and Desi Josi.

Derrick’s two siblings, Denise and Donald, have each pursued other careers in the dairy industry. On the farm, they milk 500 head of Jerseys and raise their replacement heifers. They grow corn and grass on 160 acres and run the rest as pasture.

temperature, ranging from the 30s in the winter to the 80s in the summer. The area receives over 120 inches of rainfall on average each year.

“That amount of rain makes manure storage a little more complicated,” Derrick said. “We can add an additional 10 feet of water to uncovered storage tanks.”

The Josi family has called the Tillamook Valley home for over 100 years.

“My great-grandfather, Alfred Josi, emigrated from Switzerland in 1912, and homesteaded our farm in 1918,”

Derrick said, making him the fourth generation of his family to operate the farm.

When he started dairy farming, Alfred joined the Tillamook County Creamery Association, and was instrumental in working to build and grow the cooperative, which had been founded in 1909 by local farmers. Over the years it has become a branded cheese company, famous for their world-renown cheeses and dairy products.

Alfred was once quoted saying, “Our Tillamook County Creamery Association

organization is one of the best anywhere, and we want to keep it that way.”

The Josi family tradition of service and leadership to the cooperative has continued over the years, and Don Josi served on the cooperative’s board of directors for nearly a decade.

Derrick has been active in the Young Cooperator program since coming home to the farm in 2004 after attending the Oregon State University.

“I started my blog when a girl from Tillamook shared the ‘dairy is scary’ propaganda lm and announced she would never eat dairy again,” Derrick said. “Both her parents grew up on farms and are still actively involved in the industry. She grew up with farm kids, and it was shocking to see someone with that background believe the lies in that lm.

So, I decided to start telling my story.”

Blogging the daily happenings on their dairy farm has not always been easy, and Josi’s social media accounts are frequently targeted and attacked by activists.

“Some of the negative aspects would denitely be being more recognizable,” Derrick said. “It has denitely brought some of the crazies out of the woodwork.”

Fortunately, not every interaction Josi has is negative, and he does enjoy the times he knows he has connected with a consumer and educated them about the industry, effecting a change in their thinking.

“I’ve had several times where people came up to me and said they had started consuming dairy again from what they learned following me. That’s always nice to hear,” Derrick said. “I’ve also changed some minds on GMOs just by explaining what they are and how we benet from them.”

In addition to his Tillamook Dairy Farmer blog, Derrick runs a Facebook page with the same name, and uses the same name for an Instagram account, all focused on promoting the dairy industry in a positive and realistic manner.

There is a great deal of time required to keep a social media audience engaged.

“It depends on the post,” Derrick said of the amount of time he spends creating posts. “Some have been several days of work on and off, while others are minutes of work just talking about my day.”

Despite the challenges facing the industry, Derrick remains optimistic about where the future will lead, and what part producers will need to play in that future.

“I think the future of dairy is bright, moving forward with all the new technology coming online,” Derrick said. “New products are being tested and consumers nding out fats aren’t bad for them. We do have challenges to overcome ranging from being even better stewards of the environment to increasing plant capacities in several regions.”

the only organization to benet from the passion the Josis have for the dairy industry and agriculture in general. Don and Desi both serve as 4-H leaders and are supporters of the local FFA. The family also supports other community organizations and the Oregon State University.

Today’s Wilsonview herd is a testament to the efcient reproduction of the Jersey cow, and has its foundation laid in several key purchases the Josis have made over the years. The focus of their breeding program is to breed for production and components, while striving for a solidly built cow.

That philosophy has been successful for the Josi family, as they have achieved a current production average of 19,460 pounds of milk with 4.8 percent fat and 3.56 percent protein. The herd consistently ranks as one of the top herds in the nation for their average Jersey Performance Index (JPI), which in April of 2016 was +60. With over 70 percent of the herd genotyped, Wilsonview-bred animals frequently appear at the top of the American Jersey Cattle Association’s genetic listings. On the type front, there are nearly 50 Excellent cows in the herd and over 420 appraised as Very Good.

The average classication score is nearly 84.

The Wilsonview herd is milked in a double-12 herringbone parlor and housed in a freestall barn. During summers, the herd is pastured. The Josis are considering new building plans, which are dependent on cash ow. They are hoping to start the rst phase in the coming year, which will include dry cow and calving facilities.

Their goal is to have their building project completed within 10 years. Thoughts are leaning toward incorporating robotics into a new milking structure. Currently, they use a Lely Juno robot for pushing feed, but are interested in increasing robotics on the farm.

Derrick has become passionate about sharing the true story of his dairy farm and animal agriculture and looks at the challenges facing producers outside the industry.

“We are being challenged by activists and environmentalists,” Derrick said.

Those challenges helped spur him to start a blog about one year ago focusing on educating consumers about life on a dairy farm, and the concern farmers have for their land and animals.

Dairy Daughters in Music City Duo from Minnesota, Florida farms pursue dream of making country music in Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Among their peers, Megan Gertken and Shelby Dressel both agree growing up on a dairy farm is a unique characteristic. So when the two young musicians met each other while starting their country music careers in Nashville, they were excited to make a connection with a fellow dairy farmer’s daughter and write music.

Gertken, originally from Albany, Minn., and Dressel, who originates from Avon Park, Fla., now call themselves the Dairy Daughters. Within the duo, Dressel is the lead singer and plays guitar, while Gertken

plays ddle and sings harmony.

The two describe their sound as a country gold, with sisterly harmonies and a back porch feel. Their musical inuence comes from 1990s country music, and artists such as Patty Loveless, George Strait, Shenandoah, Little Texas, Blackhawk, Terri Clark and Sara Evans.

“It’s real country – the stuff we grew up on,” Gertken said.

ConƟnued from DAIRY DAUGHTERS | Page 17 the tractor. The family sold their herd in 2007 when Gertken was 17 years old. Five years later, the family started back in dairy, but with goats instead. They are now milking 200 goats.

Dressel’s family began their dairy in Miami, Fla., where they had also opened a dairy bar serving homemade ice cream, shakes and malts before they moved it to central Florida in 1958. Her family sold the dairy in 2000, but her dad continued to work on the 1,200-acre, 1,000cow dairy, where they also lived

and where Dressel grew up. She and her siblings participated in 4-H and FFA raising swine and beef for showing and their auction at the county fair.

Like agriculture, music has been a part of each of their lives from a young age. Gertken started playing piano when she was 6 years old. After she and her sister watched a violin recital, they fell in love with the instrument. Their mom rented a ddle and the two learned to play.

“I did ddle contests, wed-

dings, you name it. We were playing all sorts of events all around Minnesota,” Gertken said.

After visiting Nashville at the age of 16 and again at 18, Gertken knew she wanted to pursue a music career. At age 19, Gertken moved to Music City.

Dressel said she has been singing for as long as she can remember and did her rst solo in front of a crowd at church at the age of 8. She would also sing with her dad and his band;

Pushing toward the future

however, it was her participation in an FFA convention talent contest that pushed her to pursue her passion.

“I took rst place. That’s when I thought maybe I should take it a little more seriously,” Dressel said.

She visited Nashville for the rst time at age 16 and audi-

tioned with a friend for the television show, “Can You Duet.”

“That was something that gave me a kick in the butt to take the next step,” Dressel said.

That is when she decided to move to Nashville in 2010.

Gertken and Dressel met while playing open mic nights at Tootsie’s Orchard Lounge, a well-known bar with live music in Nashville. Although they have been writing music together for the seven years they have known each other, it has only been the past two years the duo started calling themselves the Dairy Daughters.

“It came pretty easy for us [to be a duo]. Musically we have the same opinions and a lot in common,” Gertken said.

When choosing their name, they wanted to incorporate their background.

“We wanted to go with something real … it’s part of our story – how two people met from opposite sides of the country and [growing up on a dairy farm] was something we had in common,” Dressel said.

Along with inuencing the name of their musical group, their dairy farming roots have inspired their writing.

“We like to write about our lives and our moral values growing up and the things we have experienced. We keep it real,” Dressel said.

One of their songs is called “Farmers Day Off.” “The whole idea behind it is that a farmer never really gets a day off. … You’re married to it,” Gertken said.

Growing up on dairies has also inuenced their work in other ways. They both attribute having a hard work ethic from being in the barn. Plus, there was always music.

“From the house, to the barn, to the shed, there was always a radio station on. Nine times out of 10 it was country [music]. It just made work easier – listening to music,” Gertken said.

Dressel can relate.

“I used to sing to the cows,” she said.

And they each cherish their farm childhood.

“There’s a freeness of being home, working on the farm. Being around family, everyone works together.

You spend a lot of time together and that was always really nice,” Gertken said.

But both have taken the leap to pursue their music careers away from family and the farm. Six days of the week, they start their day playing music at Tootsie’s at the Nashville International Airport followed by hours of song writing and playing in live music venues in Music City. They are also working on the digital release of their rst single “Tomboy” at the end of the month.

“Neither one of us would be where we are without family support. We’re far away from home. It’s challenging and there are ups and downs emotionally on this musical journey,” Dressel said.

Despite the challenges, the dairy daughters are glad to have met each other and be pursuing their music dream.

“Being able to do something you love every single day is amazing,” Gertken said.

Haugen wraps up 32-year UW-Extension career

into a job that would pay better and make use of my degree. I thought that extension work looked interesting and would give me a chance to work with farmers. In April of 1985, I was offered a job as the crops and soils extension agent for Shawano County, Wis. It was a great ďƒžt. However, my wife wished to be closer to her family at Canton, Minn. So, when an opening came up in Crawford County, Wis. (only 60 miles from my in-laws), I applied and was hired in January of 1992 as the agriculture agent for Crawford County.

Minnesota dairyman might pursue consulting, farm mediation Vance Haugen, extension agriculture agent in Crawford County, Wis., for the past 25 years, is retiring Jan. 31, 2018. Haugen, 60, is also a dairy farmer in southeast Minnesota. Dairy Star asked Haugen about his farm, family and career.

What is your current situation? My family consists of Bonnie, my wife of 37 years; my daughter, Inga, 36; son, Olaf, 32, and his wife, Corinne, and their sons, Norris and Leyland; and my youngest son, Thor, 29, and his wife, Sarah, and their children, Sully and Aurora. We purchased our farm in 1993, and have been rotational grazing it from day one. Our farm is devoted to grazing, and as such, we have no commodity crops grown on the owned acres. Our dairy, Springside Dairy, LLC, has been managed by Olaf since 2010.

From 1993 to 2007, Bonnie managed the farm, and I was the part-time farmer with the off-farm job. From 2007 to 2010, our daughter, Inga, co-managed the farm with her mother. We are milking 168 cows and have 60 yearling short-bred heifers and 60 spring heifer calves. Our herd is a three-way cross of New Zealand Holstein, New Zealand

Please tell us a bit about yourself.

I grew up on a 240-acre 20-cow Vance Haugen dairy and crop UW-Extension farm in northwest Minnesota near Oklee. My folks still are farming there, raising beef cows and growing hay. I have my bachelor and master degrees (1979 and 1984) from the North Dakota State University in agricultural mechanization. After graduating, I worked full time for six-and-a-half years for the ag engineering department as a research technician and went to school part time to earn my master’s degree. From there, I when into the Extension Service in 1985.

Why did you begin using managed, or intensive, grazing? We started grazing in 1989 on a 15-acre hobby farm with sheep. I went to a eld day promoting intensive rotational grazing for sheep and was impressed by the productivity that I started to practice it on my farm.

From there I have been studying and practicing intensive rotation grazing ever since.

What are some of the benets of grazing?

Increased productivity, reduced labor and a reduction in erosion. Gazing can also enhance the potential for protability.

What are your thoughts or concerns about the dairy business for the next year and farther into the future?

With Grassland Dairy, Greenwood, Wis., dropping producers, having access to a market is a concern. Smaller producers can be just as, or more, protable than their larger colleagues.

However, if processors will not pick up a smaller producer’s milk, we could have problems. While efcient graziers can generally produce milk less expensively they have to be able to sell their product.

What did you like about your extension work? I liked working with the farmers, working in the countryside and always having the opportunity to learn more about farming.

What did you learn from your work as an extension agent? I tried to learn everything. But as time goes on, you realize that you have to specialize, as there is just too much information to know it all.

What did you try to help farmers learn and understand? In recent years, working around the state on lowcost milking parlors has been exciting.

Having farmers of any herd size being able to have a low-cost and excellent milking facility has been a real ego biscuit. The last dozen years, intensive, rotational grazing education has been a large part of my role, and I have had the pleasure of seeing young farmers get started, and older farmers continue in the industry because of this education.

What was your involvement with the Great River Graziers? I was with the group as an advisor when it started in 1993. I have helped facilitate the group the last 25 years.

Tell us about your involvement in pasture walks. I heard about pasture walks from a colleague, John Cockrell, and thought this would be a great way to teach intensive, rotational grazing.

I think the rst walk was on Jim Wedeberg’s farm. We have averaged 12 walks a year. Our farm has hosted about 20 over the years.

What do you think about the pasture walk concept? Done well, the pasture walk can be one of the best teaching methods around. Done incorrectly – not controlling side conversations and not having an educational structure – it is an absolute mess.

How would you change the pasture walks? We have evolved a good method, but there is nothing so good that you can’t make it better. One of the problems we have had is that the schedule is made up in March for the rest of the year. Sometimes the advertised topics are a little off base when compared to the weather or market pressures that exist that month.

When is your last day as an agent?

Jan. 31, 2018. I will be at the Wisconsin Grazing Conference, sponsored by Grassworks.

What do you think the future holds for you? I hope to do some consulting, and I may take on a farm mediation position.

What do you like to do in any spare time? Playing music and woodworking are my current hobbies. And I’m hoping to spend more time with my grandkids.

Lots of kidding around Goat dairy makes great family project for Andersons

CASHTON, Wis. – A family project is what Brian and Angela Anderson were looking for when they began developing a herd of dairy goats on a farm near their home outside of Cashton, Wis., in Monroe County.

“We’d been looking for a long time for something to do as a family project and this seemed to be a good t,” Brian said.

“With our daughter starting school, I was looking for a way to bring in some income without having to get a job in town,” said Angela, who also does inhome daycare.

The Andersons have four children: Gabriel, 18, who will be graduating this month from Marine Recruit Training at Camp Pendleton near San Diego, Calif.; Ethan, 15, a freshman at Cashton High School; Gavin, 11, a sixth grader at Cashton Middle School; and Brianna, 8, a third grader at Cashton Elementary.

The Andersons are expecting their fth child.

Milking dairy goats has been a good t for the Andersons. Their children have embraced the business as well. Ethan and Gavin take charge of the feeding, and Ethan is also charged with caring for the kids while they are on milk. Brianna is the family’s

“I wanted to jump in with both feet and take out a loan to buy the farm and the animals at one time,” Brian said.

“Fortunately the banker wasn’t on board with that, so we started small.

That gave us time to learn and grow with them. A hundred goats at the start would have been overwhelming.”

ConƟnued from ANDERSONS | Page 25 The Andersons started out milking seven goats and slowly expanded the herd. For the rst two years, they did not ship milk because they did not meet minimum volume requirements of 100 pounds of milk per day for pick-up.

“We drank the milk, and made a lot of different cheeses and Cajeta, which is a form of caramel,” Angela said.

“We couldn’t sell any, but we did give a lot away to family and friends. Fortunately, goat cheese freezes well. It’s also a good choice for people who are lactose intolerant.”

Last year the Anderson’s production level reached a level that allowed them to start shipping milk to Montchevre in Belmont, Wis. Now their milk is picked up on a threeday/four-day rotation.

Their herd is bred to freshen in two groups for the next year, with the rst group starting in late-January and the second group kidding in March and April. Goats have the same 305-day lactation and 60-day dry period as a dairy cow and have a ve month gestation.

The drying off process has begun in their herd to prepare

for the rst group to freshen.

As they dry off goats, their herd production will dip below the pick-up limits for Montchevre, and the Andersons will once again build up their stash of goat cheeses for about a month in February and March. Angela plans to begin making soap from the milk.

Angela Anderson handles most of the milking duƟes for the Andersons’ goat herd. This year they have been milking 48 head and gure that they will be milking between 60 and 70 next year. over 600 pounds.

Once their kidding season is over, the Andersons will be milking about 70 head. Capacity for their barn is about 80 goats without over-crowding.

“We really want to get to a point where we are able to ship milk straight through the year,” Angela said.

“The milk is worth more from November to March because many goat farms don’t sell milk during the winter.”

Ethan is the primary caretaker of the herd’s kids.

“I like spending time with the animals and bonding with them,” Ethan said. “It makes it easier to know when something is wrong, when you know how they act normally. They are all different.”

When goats freshen, the kids are fed colostrum for three days. They are trained to drink from a group pail feeder and are only bottle fed if they do not take to the pail. Once they are off colostrum, the kids are fed pasteurized whole cow milk, which the Andersons procure from a neighbor.

The Andersons’ herd is made of several breeds and breed-crosses, including Saanen, Nubian, Lamancha and Alpine.

“Most of the herd is Saanen,” Angela said. “They produce higher quantities of milk.”

The Andersons had tried crossing more Nubian blood into their herd for higher butterfat production, but found the loss of volume of milk did not outweigh the increased butterfat. State averages of goat production are about ve pounds per day, while the Anderson herd averages about eight pounds per day.

In their herd, the Saanens and Alpines average about eight to 12 pounds per day, while the Nubians might only produce three to ve.

The goats are fed a textured ration made at a

local feed mill that includes corn, oats, molasses and soybean. The kids and doelings eat a similar ration with Rumensin added. Hay is purchased from a neighbor, while the Andersons rent their tillable acreage out to another farmer.

“It works out well. It’s great hay, and he brings the wagons over and we unload it,” Brian said. “People think goats will just eat anything, and they will, but they have to have quality hay and feed to make milk, just like a dairy cow.”

While quality hay is important, the goats do enjoy eating Christmas trees, which the Andersons collect from the area.

“They love them. They eat the needles, branches and the bark,” Angela said. “It also acts as a natural dewormer for them. They’ll eat two or three trees a day.”

Others in the business have been a big help to the Andersons.

“Everything we’ve done, we’ve copied from a friend who has mentored us in beginning our herd,” Brian said. “From the feed to the facility, we’ve tried to copy their model.”

The Andersons take great pride in knowing their herd well, and Brianna takes charge of naming most of them after owers. Tulip and Periwinkle are among herd favorites based on their personality. Lily is another important goat in the herd, being the rst doeling born on the farm on Brianna’s birthday.

“We wanted to show people that these empty dairy barns can be used for something productive.

They don’t just have to sit there empty,” Brian said.

“There is denitely something to be said for raising your kids on a farm, too. They learn so many things about life they can’t learn any other way.”

Journal of Dairy Science celebrates 100 years of progress

The rst issue of the Journal of Dairy Science® was published in 1917. Since that rst issue, the journal has published almost 30,000 articles and 200,000 pages. In the process, the work published in the journal has made a broad and invaluable contribution to our scientic knowledge and to the production of a safe and affordable food supply.

The authors published in the rst issue would recognize many current topics of research, but their work also laid the foundation for new elds of research they could not have foreseen. Topics unknown even 50 years ago are now standard areas for research and application. “As in all scientic elds, dairy science demonstrates the continuous loop between the initial question, the testing of the hypothesis (research), the defense and publication of the results, and the creation of new questions based on the original research. This constant cycle of scientic discovery fueled by the inborn curiosity of the human condition has led to a century of dairy science research and vast improvement in the production and processing of milk,” said Matt Lucy, JDS editor-in-chief.

To reect on that century of research, the December issue of the journal’s 100th volume contains the ADSA Foundation Collection of 100-Year Reviews,

a special 100th anniversary retrospective containing 30 focused reviews of progress in areas of research that are featured in JDS. The timelines in each review place major discoveries and events into historical context. “Students and researchers of the present need a solid foundation of what we know now so that we do not repeat the past instead of creating the future.

We hope that the articles themselves and the timelines become valuable resources for this purpose,” said John McNamara, guest editor for the special issue.

Holiday baking Everyone has their favorite holiday treat. Mark is his mom’s date lled cookies. Jonathon loves chocolate dipped Ritz crackers with peanut butter.

Katie’s are Oreo trufes. Michael and Austin eat every treat as it is their favorite. For me, it is not Christmas until I bake up a batch of my grandmother’s orange frosted cookies. Of course the best part of Christmas treats is having a baking party. I had my daughter-in-law, Libby, help me with some of the Christmas treats.

We tried new recipes and think we’ve found some new family favorites. Mark fell in love with the turtle thumbprint cookies. It is the perfect trilogy of chocolate, caramel and pecans. The only problem with these cookies is they won’t last until Christmas.

I love to make things that are easy and require little busy work.

I get bored dipping everything in chocolate bark, but I keep reminding myself how good it tastes. At least having a couple of people in the kitchen together makes this job go quicker.

Turtle thumbprint cookies 2 cups our 2/3 cup cocoa powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1 cup butter, softened 1 1/3 cup sugar 2 large egg yolks (save egg whites for topping) 4 Tbsp. milk 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1/2 tsp. almond extract Topping 1 2/3 cup chopped pecans 2 large egg whites

1 jar caramel sauce In a medium bowl, whisk together our, cocoa powder and salt; set aside. In mixer bowl beat together sugar and butter on medium-high speed; about 3 minutes. Add egg yolks, one at a time. Beat in vanilla and almond extracts. Turn mixer to low-medium and beat in dry ingredients a little at a time.

Alternate with milk and nish with our mixture. Beat until well incorporated. Refrigerate tightly wrapped dough for at least 1 hour.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line baking sheet with parchment paper. Using a cookie scoop to scoop dough, roll into 1-inch balls. In a medium bowl, whisk egg whites. Coat each chocolate ball with egg white then roll in chopped pecans. Place on baking sheet. Using your thumb, press down until a circle is formed in the center of the dough. Bake in oven for 13 minutes. Cookies will be soft until cooled. Allow to cool then remove from baking sheet.

Spoon in caramel sauce.

Chocolate mint cream cheese buttons Mom on Timeout 4 ounces cream cheese, softened 4 1/2 cup powdered sugar 1/2 tsp. mint extract Several drops of green gel food color 1 cup heavy whipping cream 10 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips Combine cream cheese and 1 cup of powdered sugar in a large bowl.

pour over the top of the chocolate chips. Stir once or twice and then let sit for 2 minutes. Continue stirring until the chocolate is fully melted and incorporated. Transfer the chocolate ganache to a Ziploc bag and lit it set for 30 minutes or so until it has thickened-up (about the consistency of yogurt).

Cranberry bacon brunch scones with cranberry-pecan cream cheese Patrice Hurd 1 6-ounce package of Ocean Spray craisins 1/2 cup Ocean Spray cran-cherry or cranberry juice 1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened 3 Tbsp. honey 1 Tbsp. sugar 1 Tbsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. ground black pepper 1/2 cup cold butter

5 ounces shredded sharp Cheddar cheese 6 slices thick bacon, cooked and chopped into pieces 2 green onions, nely chopped 3 large eggs 3/4 cup buttermilk Combine dried cranberries and juice drink in small microwavesafe bowl. Microwave on high 1 minute or until hot. Stir together cream cheese and honey in medium bowl until smooth; fold in pecans. Scoop 10 large mounds of batter 2 inches apart on baking sheet. Bake 20 minutes or until lightly browned and centers are done. Cool for 2 minutes on baking sheet. Remove to wire rack to cool completely.

Split scones; serve with cranberry-pecan cream cheese. If cream cheese mixture is too rm, soften slightly in microwave.

Melt butter in large pan. Add onion and cabbage. Cook and stir until vegetables become translucent. Stir in flour and cook one minute. Add broth, beer and mustard. Cook and simmer 30 minutes. Add warm Half and Half and cheese.

Lay out the second package of crescent roll dough over the cream cheese mixture. Sprinkle with the remaining 1/2 cup sugar and a little cinnamon.

Bake for 15 minutes in a 350-degree oven. (Can refrigerate overnight.)

12 oz. pkg. Cool Whip 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional) 1/2 cup butter, melted

Crush cookies and mix with melted butter. Press into a 9- by 13-inch pan.

Reserve 1/2 cup of crumbs for topping. Put partly thawed ice cream on crumb mixture and freeze until firm. Pour chocolate syrup over ice cream. Spread Cool Whip over syrup. Sprinkle with nuts and crumbs. Freeze until ready to serve.
