Rumen development sets a cow up for life

Early grain intake key to growth

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The future of any dairy farm rests with the development of the calves on the farm. Growing healthy, well-developed calves that will become the replacement animals for the herd in an efcient and economical matter should be the goal of dairy farmers. One of the most important things a farmer can do is ensure the calf’s rumen gets a good start.

“The rumen is the organ that makes a dairy cow able to do what she can do,” Jud Heinrichs said. “There aren’t many other species out there that can produce more than their body

weight in milk protein and fat each year. A cow can do it year after year.”

Heinrichs, of Pennsylvania State University, spoke at a Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin Calf Care Connection workshop held Nov. 19 in Eau Claire, Wis. In a newborn calf, the abomasum is the largest compartment of the stomach, despite the fact that eventually the rumen will become the largest compartment by the time the calf is three to four months of age.

ConƟnued from RUMEN | Page 2 In a young calf, milk is funneled past the rumen into the abomasum through the esophageal groove. Calves digest milk in the abomasum using an enzyme called rennin, which causes the milk fat and protein to curdle, which their body will work to digest and absorb nutrients from between feedings.

“The formation of this curd allows for slow, efcient digestion of the nutrients in the milk,” Heinrichs said.

He said it typically takes 18 to 24 hours for each curd to be fully digested.

While milk is a mainstay in a calf’s diet, the importance of introducing a calf starter grain into the diet early cannot be overlooked when it comes to rumen development, according to Heinrichs.

“The No. 1 thing you should be doing with that calf is growing her rumen,” Heinrichs said. “She’s going to live on that for the rest of her life.

From the time she is weaned until they day she leaves the farm, she is relying on her rumen for all of her nutrient absorption.”

The secret to encouraging rumen growth in calves lies in grain intake, according to Heinrichs, who said that growing a rumen takes approximately 21 to 28 days once the

calf starts eating starches in the form of calf starter. A typical calf starter is made up of approximately 30 percent starch and 20 percent crude protein. It often contains added vitamins and minerals, and medications to help ght coccidiosis.

Offering grain early is a key to stimulating rumen growth, and according to Heinrichs, calves should be consuming about a half a pound of calf starter a day by the time they are three weeks old. Intake should be up to more than one pound per day two to three weeks before weaning, giving the rumen adequate time to grow.

“Grain intake before weaning will dictate grain intake the rst week and the rst month after weaning,” Heinrichs said.

“The more grain we can get into the calf, the faster she will grow and the better she will transition after weaning.”

Heinrichs recommends feeding calves 5-6 quarts of milk or milk replacer per day, reducing the amount being fed about a week before weaning to ensure calves are increasing their intake of calf starter.

“Calves can only eat so much,” Heinrichs said. “If she’s eating more milk, her grain consumption will decrease.”

Heinrichs recommends

waiting until the rumen is well developed to begin to introduce forages into the diet.

“When they are eating 5 pounds of grain every day, then they are at a point where their rumen is functioning,” Heinrichs said. “They will be chewing their cud.”

Heinrichs had the rumens of three calves available to demonstrate his point: one from a calf fed an all-milk diet, one from a calf fed milk with limited grain and one from a calf offered a diet of milk, grain and hay.

The differences between the three rumens were visible and varied. The rumen of the calf fed all milk was much smoother than the other two rumens, lacking the texture and appearing to be at. The rumen from the calf fed grain and hay was much bigger than the other two and had considerably more papillae, the nger-like projections that grow from the inner layer, increasing the surface area of the rumen that is available to absorb nutrients for the growing calf.

“Poor rumen development can often cost you a month of growth after weaning,” Heinrichs said. “In order to achieve optimal rumen growth, milk and starter intake needs to be balanced.”

Digging deeper, challenging each other to improve

Western Technical College to develop peer groups

HILLSBORO, Wis. – Getting farmers together with similar interests is the primary reason Western Technical College, of La Crosse, Wis., is looking to develop peer groups of producers who will be able to dig deeper into resources and challenge other members of their group to continue to improve their businesses.

WTC’s mission for the peer groups is to provide participants the opportunity for networking, and for personal growth and development. The goal is for all members to see their peer group as a safe environment from which they can draw and share ideas, creating trust and conďƒždence. The peer groups will give members the ability to problem solve and learn new ideas from eyes outside of their own operations. “These groups will be highly conďƒždential groups that can share numbers and get into more detail about their operations than what we can do in our farm business classes,â€? said Aimee Schomburg, WTC Farm Business and Production Management instructor.

Schomburg spoke at one of several informational meetings held in the school’s area Nov. 19 at the Royal Bank in Hillsboro, Wis. While the school’s farm business classes are broad in terms of the kinds of producers enrolled, the peer groups will be more focused and speciďƒžc, with six to 10 members in each group. Participants in the peer groups do not have to be enrolled in the school’s farm business classes. They need to have a desire to meet with and learn from farmers who are like themselves in terms of production. Peer groups will be focused, with groups dealing with all aspects of dairying, including groups focused on organic dairies, robotic dairies and beginning farmers. “The small group size will allow for a more cohesive group and will help ensure the conďƒždentiality of the group,â€? Schomburg said.

While participants may have to travel further geographically to participate in their peer group, Schomburg said travel will be worth it for producers to take part in dialogue with other producers in related situations.

The purpose of a farmer peer group is to share ideas, solve problems and offer support and alternative ideas for producers. With the peer groups being speciďƒžc, participants will have the opportunity to delve deeper into things that could beneďƒžt their operation and will be able to use the experiences of others to try to solve problems which they might be facing on their own farms.

When each group ďƒžrst meets, they will identify their purpose, deciding what direction they would like to see their peer group take. They will meet with their facilitator, a member of WTC’s farm business teaching staff, who will do the planning and preparation for each of their meetings and help keep the group on track, working towards their goals. The facilitator will provide agendas for each meeting, take notes and will provide the resources the group needs. The topics of discussion will be farmer-led. On an annual basis, the group will evaluate what they have been working on and what direction they want to continue to take.

ALBANY, Minn. – In many dairy barns around KASM of Central Minnesota, farmers milk their cows each morning to the sound Joe Gill’s voice.

For many of them, it is the only radio station they listen to. While they work, they can listen to the news, weather, markets, and everything in between, much like Gill did as a kid growing up a mile or two from the station.

“We always had the station on,” Gill said. “I was the kid that would go and turn it to a different station because I didn’t listen to the old time music and the markets, so it’s kind of ironic that the shoe is on the other foot, where if somebody turns it, I’m the one turning it back to KASM.” Fast forward to 2018, and Gill has now worked with KASM Radio in Albany since 1999. On Nov. 16, he was awarded the Minnesota Farm Bureau Foundation Agriculture Communicator of the Year Award at the 100th Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation (MFBF) Annual Meeting in Bloomington.

This award is presented because an important mission of the Farm Bureau is to inform the public about its policy positions and to tell agriculture’s story.

Gill sees this as a mission for his own work.

“It serves a double purpose,” Gill said. “You are informing people who are involved [in agriculture] and then the people who are not, or maybe a few generations removed. And, I think our main thing is staying local. I hear that frequently, how valuable that is, and when I talk to other people in the business who maybe got away from that, they feel like they’re coming back to that because it’s something that’s maybe overlooked nowadays.”

While Gill serves locally on the Stearns County Farm Bureau Board of Directors and helped to start their local FFA alumni chapter, he also ventures out of state with his work. He is

currently serving as west region vice president on the National Association of Farm Broadcasting (NAFB) Board of Directors and supports many Minnesota commodity organizations.

With KASM, Gill covers local, state and a number of national events.

He feels it is important to be visible on a national level. On a monthly or bimonthly basis, the station covers a national show or is represented at various meetings.

“I think a lot of folks enjoy that kind of coverage because they can’t be there themselves,” Gill said. “Maybe they can’t go to World Dairy Expo, so if I can feature some reports and be that middle man, I’m more than happy to do that.”

Other national events covered are the Commodity Classic, a trade show like the World Dairy Expo with a grain emphasis, and the World Pork Expo. Local and statewide events like the Minnesota State Fair, Farmfest, the Central Minnesota Farm Show and the Stearns County Fair are also covered by Gill.

Each year, Gill goes to Washington, D.C. at least once with the NAFB. “That’s something I really look forward to, because we get all access to our statewide legislators and commodity and ag groups,” he said.

Gill has been rmly ensconced in his broadcaster’s chair for nearly two decades, and is only the second farm broadcaster in the station’s history.

When he stepped in to the position, he had big shoes to ll – those of Cliff Mitchell, the legendary voice of KASM for more than half a century.

“My main motivation is don’t screw up what the guy before you did,” Gill said. “Cliff raised the bar so high.

I always say it’s like batting after Babe Ruth. My main driver is to maintain the reputation we have, and make it better, so whoever follows me may have that same mentality, like jeez, we’re batting after Joe Mauer, we need to raise the bar a little bit.”

That dedication goes into motion each day, around 5 a.m. when Gill arrives to work. Monday through Friday, he is on the air from 6-9:15 a.m. and again from 12:15-1 p.m. In addition to talking on air, he does “trafc duty,” or scheduling commercials while timing Turn to KASM | Page 7

“You have to ll in the open spots and make sure you are on time, so it’s kind of like you’re the conductor of the orchestra,” Gill said. “We don’t do any music, so you pretty much have to be dialed in. If you’re on, you’re on. In the mornings I have a couple programs that are a couple of minutes long where you can sneak away and grab a cup of coffee or something, but otherwise it’s pretty much hands on.”

Gill enjoys his time in the booth, but even more so, he values the people he meets along the way.

“I always say ag people are good people,” he said. “It’s always fun to talk to them and see what they’re doing and a lot of those people have turned into friends, like a lot of other broadcasters have turned into very good friends. It’s like a second family. That networking I really value a lot, and the listenership, too.”

While Gill is honored to be chosen

as the Farm Bureau’s Ag Communicator of the Year, he knows it all starts at home, with support from his family.

Gill and his wife, Denise, are parents to Natalie, 11, and Ben, 9.

“A lot of credit goes to my wife,” Gill said. “She works in radio as well.

She understands and allows me to go here and there and picks up the slack when I’m not there [home]. If she didn’t do that, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do.”

In the end, he wants to make his family proud, but he also wants to do well by the station he serves.

“The standard, the call letters – I look at KASM almost as a parent,” he said. “You make it proud, you want to hold that tradition.”

And those cows. Even as a kid, Gill always knew they liked the radio turned to 1150 AM. “You could tell they like KASM better,” he said. “They were smiling all the time.”

Recognizing, preventing lameness in dairy cows

Lameness in your dairy cows is detrimental not only to herd health, but to your bottom line as well.

University of MN Studies in New York have shown that lameness is one of the most expensive health problems, at a cost of $90 per cow. How can you avoid these problems and the high costs they bring?

Step one, is knowing how to identify lameness. Having a keen eye and taking the time to observe your cows in locomotion is the rst step in preventing problems. We all know cows that are limping or are favoring a certain leg are lame--but typically those cows can been lame for quite some time. To reduce pain and negative impact, catching lameness early is important. Let’s review locomotion scoring using the scale developed by Zinpro, which scores cattle 1-5.

– A score of 1 indicates a normal cow. She stands and walks with a level back, and makes long, condent strides.

– A score of 2 is a cow that is mildly lame. When standing, her back will be

at, but will arch when she walks. Her gait will be slightly abnormal.

– A score of 3 is given to a moderately lame cow. She stands and walks with an arched back and short strides with one or more legs. Slight sinking of dew-claws in limb opposite to the affected limb may be evident.

– A score of 4 is a cow that is lame.

When standing and walking, her back is arched. She’ll favor one or more limbs, but can still bear some weight on them. Sinking of the dew claws is evident in the limb opposite of the affected limb.

– A score of 5 indicates a severely lame cow. There will be pronounced arching of the back, she will be reluctant to move, and will almost completely transfer weight off of the affected limbs.

As indicated by the score descriptions, looking at the cow’s back while both standing and walking can be a good indicator of lameness.

Catching and treating lame cows early, before they are 4’s or 5’s will greatly improve animal welfare, prevent long term problems with the animal, and have a smaller economic impact. The best way to look for lameness is to spend some time watching your cows.

Learn how they walk so you can see a problem more easily when there is one. Observe them going in and out of the parlor or barn and as they wander around the barn, pasture, or cow yard.

As with any problem on the farm, the key to good management is early detection and aggressive prevention.

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? Through 4-H I show my cows at the county fair. I also take my cows and show them at open dairy shows and give presentations about my animals. I have organized a petting zoo for the Orange City Tulip Festival. I have made lunches for farms and served the lunches to them. I have gone to national and state FFA conventions. I also have done many contests in FFA. Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? I am involved in FFA and 4-H because I wanted to learn life lessons that I would be able to use in the future. In FFA, I have learned about leadership and the opportunities in agriculture. 4-H has taught me life lessons I will never forget and that I use every day. My favorite is 4-H, because it’s the organization I show my cows through.

Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. My best experience I have had in 4-H is this past year when I got overall supreme champion dairy at the Sioux County Youth Fair. Also, showing in general is the most valuable experience to me. In FFA, my best experience is going to National FFA Convention in Indianapolis.

What’s your favorite social media? Snapchat, because it’s how I communicate with my friends most of the time.

What are your career aspirations? My goal for the future is to go off to college and come back home to my family’s dairy farm. I have a passion for the cows and love to work with them.

What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? FFA has taught me about leadership. 4-H has taught me how to be responsible and work hard for something. It also has taught me how to care for my cows.

Faced with lower milk and commodity prices, many Wisconsin farmers are looking to diversify and add new revenue streams. Towards that end, Compeer Financial and University of Wisconsin-Extension have planned to host the Resilient Farms Conference, a one-day conference for farmers interested in exploring new business ideas for their farms.

At the conference, scheduled Tuesday, Dec. 11 at the Wilderness Resort in Wisconsin Dells, farmers will have an opportunity to attend two dozen sessions to gather information, resources and tools that can help them explore potential new revenue streams. About 20 industry experts, including many farmers who have successfully implemented alternative enterprises, also will be available for one-on-one consultations.

Session topics will include value-added production ideas, marketing and business strategies, business planning and analysis, and guides to regulatory and licensing processes. Conference attendees will have a variety of sessions to attend at which various ideas will be discussed.

Possible options include: – Value-added processing for dairy; – Adding a Community Supported Agriculture component; – Raising and direct-marketing beef or chickens, ducks, guinea fowl, etc.; – Earning income from woodlands (i.e. mushrooms, hazelnuts, maple syrup, etc.); – Adding a Farm to Institution component; – Adding specialty crops (Christmas trees, grapes, hops, cut owers for market or retail) – Hemp production; – Exploring energy-production options for the farm; – Adding an agri-tourism component: (i.e. Air BnB farm stays, barn or farm weddings, UPick, family events, petting zoos, pumpkin patches, fall harvest tours), etc.

UW Discovery Farms provides Wisconsin farmers with credible water quality information straight from privately-owned farms, and is excited to bring together a lineup of innovators and experts to this year’s event. Attendees will hear the latest data on cover crops, nitrogen and phosphorus management, and water quality. For many dairy farms, managing employees on their farms presents a greater challenge than managing the cows in their herd. Ensuring that farms are hiring, training and engaging the best employees is the focus of the PDPW Human Resources Workshop presented by Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW).

The one-day conference will be held on Wed., Dec. 12 at Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells, Wis., from 9 a.m. to 4:30 pm. In addition to sessions that address managing employees, presenters will also share insights on maintaining the physical and mental health of both managers and employee teams.

The I-29 Moo University is hosting a webinar on Thursday, Dec. 20 that will focus on preparing the information that lenders will ask for. The “Improving Conversations With Your Lender” webinar will outline and explain the banking benchmarks and nancial documents that lenders need to evaluate loans. The webinar is scheduled for 60 minutes beginning at 11 a.m. and will include time for questions at the end of the webinar.

In addition, the program will focus on improving enterprise expense breakdowns and identify follow-up information that is available. South Dakota State University Extension Livestock Business Management Field Specialist Heather Gessner will present the information. She grew up on a diversied operation raising cattle and hogs, as well as corn, soybeans, oats and alfalfa.

Since joining SDSU Extension in 2001, she has earned a national reputation providing farmers and ranchers with enterprise analysis, budget spreadsheets, marketing education, as well as estate and transition planning, education and assistance.

Managing a dairy farm requires a unique skill set to keep up with a complex business as well as changing technologies and management practices; managing the nances of a dairy farm is no different. A new program designed specically for dairy producers will provide tools today’s farmers need in a format that meets their busy schedules.

The PDPW Financial Literacy for Dairy® program presented by Professional Dairy Producers© is the dairy industry’s rst nancial curriculum designed for dairy producers. The program was authored by renowned dairy economist and instructor Dr. David Kohl and vetted during a pilot program with 36 dairy producers in 2017-18. Two levels of training will be offered, based on online assessment prior to the course.

Program trainers will include: – Gary Sipiorski, Dairy Development Manager with Vita Plus, will facilitate both Level 1 and Level 2 sessions. Sipiorski brings a wealth of experience from roles in the feed industry, as a community banker, and instructor and advisory board of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

He has served on a number of agricultural boards and leadership programs and was a member of the PDPW Financial Literacy taskforce.

– Steve Schwoerer, Senior Dairy Lending Specialist with Compeer Financial, will train Level 1 sessions. Schwoerer is the account ofcer for the organization’s large dairy portfolio, covering eight counties surrounding Fond du Lac, Wis. – David Olsen, President of AgriFamily Consulting, will facilitate Level 2 sessions. Olsen works with families to professionalize their business and adoption of accrual and managerial accounting practices. His strength is working with multiple entity operations and thinking strategically about how an operation works for long term transition and estate planning.

The program was developed based on requests from dairy farmers and is designed to teach skills, then give participants the opportunity to put them to work on their farm before coming back to the next session. The course condenses college-level coursework into a few training days to make the most of participant’s time and resources. The course will focus on the principles of nancial reports to understand the numbers that drive protability as well as benchmarking to measure progress and setting nancial goals.

Location negotiable at one of the fifteen Extension Regional Offices in Minnesota

The primary audience for this educator will be cattle (beef and dairy) producers and industry professionals. The successful candidate will provide leadership in delivering state-of-the-art educational programs while working with key collaborators.

The focus of this position will be on cattle production systems management. A successful candidate will be able to demonstrate flexibility given turbulent markets, increased biosecurity pressures, disease challenges, difficulties securing labor, waste management regulations, the need to improve production efficiencies and managing volatile weather conditions. Other areas of knowledge may include stockmanship, quality assurance, pasture and grazing management, nutrition and more.

This individual should be self-motivated, enjoy working independently as well as in a team environment and be effective in communicating with producers, colleagues and industry professionals. The person must have a broad knowledge of cattle management in a variety of production systems and a strong commitment to the cattle industry.

Required Education: Master’s degree in animal science, agriculture education or closely related field.
