A century of dairy farming Rylaarsdam family marks 102 years on their farm

CHANDLER, Minn. – In 1914, Cornelius Rylaarsdam purchased a 160-acre farm that sprawled across the rolling hilltops of Buffalo Ridge.

Records show that Cornelius, who emigrated to America from the Netherlands a decade earlier, paid $58 per acre for the farm.

More than a century later, that 160-acre farm is still home to the descendants of Cornelius Rylaarsdam and his wife, Marie.

“I never knew Grandpa; he passed away before I was born,” said Verlin Rylaarsdam, Cornelius’s grandson.

Verlin and his wife, Kathy, live on the dairy farm Cornelius purchased 102 years ago.

They have been married 43 years and have four grown children. Their sons, Virgil and Glen, have become part of the 250-cow operation.

Virgil and his wife, Sarah, have ve children, Zach, 16, Lydia, 11, Nathaniel, 4, Isaac, 4, and Silas, 1.

ing their second child to arrive any day.

This August, the Rylaarsdam family received a Century Farm Award during a ceremony held at the Murray County Fair.

“A bunch of our relatives happened to be in the area and were able to help us celebrate,” Kathy said. “It’s a wonderful thing to receive a Century Farm Award, but none of it would have been possible without the strength and support of our family.”

The Rylaarsdam family had to do some digging to uncover the story of their ancestors.

“We went to the courthouse to do some research,” Kathy said. “We hadn’t realized that Cornelius had purchased this 160 acres in 1914.”

“All I knew about this farm is that Cornelius moved here in 1917,” Verlin said. “In 1909, he had purchased an 80-acre farm southeast of Chandler and lived there for a few years before he bought this farm.”

The Rylaarsdams learned that upon arriving in America, Cornelius worked at a truck farm in Maryland and soon became its manager. After a few years, Cornelius returned to the

“It didn’t go quite as planned,” Kathy said. “Marie didn’t come back on the boat with him, but she eventually came.”

Friends and relatives told the Rylaarsdams about the good farmland in southwestern Minnesota, so they traveled to the Gopher State to take a look.

“The original house was a tiny one-bedroom affair,” Verlin said. “It was so small that they called it the granary. By 1917, Grandpa and Grandma had four kids, so the rst thing they had to do was enlarge the house. It didn’t get done until winter, because my uncle Coert said he remembered snow falling onto his bed through the open roof.”

“Marie had been a schoolteacher and a city girl back in the Netherlands, so it had to be a big adjustment for her to live out here on the lonesome prairie,” Kathy said.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Verlin joined the operation after graduating from high school. Marinus and his wife, Alice, built a second house on the farmstead for themselves. Alice, whose maiden name was Vis, had emigrated from the Netherlands to America when she was 3.

Verlin’s older brother Marv had also become part of the operation. The Rylaarsdams farmed together until Marinus passed away in 1976.

“Dad kept on using workhorses until the early 1960s,” Verlin said. “It was hard to get our old tractors started in the wintertime, so Dad would hitch up the team to his bobsled and use the horses to haul hay or spread manure. I think he just liked driving a team of horses.”

The Rylaarsdam operation continued to evolve over the years. By the early 1980s, Verlin and Marv had expanded their dairy to 100 head that were milked in a 75-cow stanchion barn. They also farrowed 50 sows twice a year.

Marv was struck down by cancer in 1986, leaving behind a wife and two young children.

“Marv’s wife continued to live here for a couple of years, until she married the bachelor farmer just down the road,” Verlin said.

After Marv passed away, Verlin and Kathy cut back to milking 75 head.

In 2003, after Virgil decided to join the operation, the Rylaarsdams built a 98- by 312-foot compost barn to house their growing herd. They also installed a double-8 step-up milking parlor.

“We decided to put a step-up parlor in the old barn because it was the most inexpensive way to go,” Verlin said.

“Putting in a traditional parlor would

have required a major remodel, and we didn’t want the expense of putting up an entirely new building for a parlor.”

After high school, Virgil attended Ridgewater College in Willmar for two years, earning a degree in dairy management.

“I have always loved farming. It was all I ever wanted to do,” Virgil said. “I enjoy working with my family, but am glad that I went away to college. I met new people and got to work at a couple of different dairies. It was a good experience to work for someone else and to see how they did things on their operations.”

Following in his older brother’s footsteps, Glen also earned a dairy management degree at Ridgewater College before coming back to join his family’s operation.

“I like the idea of working outside and being your own boss,” Glen said.

“It’s a bonus that I get to work with my family every day.”

Glen and Sarah live on an acreage located a short distance from the home farm.

Adding new facilities aren’t the only changes that have occurred at the Rylaarsdam dairy. About ve years ago, they began a crossbreeding program that involves a rotation of Holstein, Swedish Red and Montbeliarde bulls.

“When I was a little kid, Dad still had a few Milking Shorthorn cows but he soon switched over to all Holsteins,” Verlin said. “It’s nice to see some color in the herd again. We’re very happy with the results of our crossbreeding program.”

Four generations of the Rylaarsdam family have cared for the quartersection of farmland that Cornelius purchased all those years ago. And as the Rylaarsdam family continues to grow, there can be little doubt this tradition of stewardship will carry on.

NEW YORK MILLS, Minn. – When the Mursus started using two robotic milking units and an automated feed pusher in June of 2013, they never imagined the decision would one day win them $10,000.

The prize money arrived for placing rst in the 2016 AT&T Real Stories Contest. The family were lmed by Bartlett Production for a video about how those robots lead to success on their dairy that was entered into the contest. Tom, his wife, Tammy, and their son, Jeremy milk 135 cows on their farm near New York Mills, Minn.

“It felt almost as good as winning a day of rock picking with the Dairy Star and Central Minnesota Credit Union in 2015,” Tom said about placing rst.

“It was unbelievable.”

Participating in this contest is not something the Mursus sought.

“We kind of fell into it,” Tom said.

Andrew Bartlett and Hannah Kenney, who run a lm production company and a lm academy, were planning to lm a diving company out of Minneapolis to enter into the contest.

“But the day before we were supposed to shoot their segment, they had a schedule conict come up,” Bartlett said.

During the rst week of October while the Mursus were in the eld chopping corn, Bartlett and Kenney called the family to ask if they could come and video them and their farm.

“We had no idea who they were,” Tom said.

“They had the video equipment rented, explained they were entering into this contest and were running out of time to get the video lmed before it was due.”

Ironically, Bartlett and Kenney were friends with a man who knew about the Mursus and visited their farm recently.

“They called him asking for ideas of people they could video for this contest and he suggested us,” Jeremy said.

Despite their busy schedule, the Mursus agreed.

“We couldn’t say no,” Tom said. “We’ve had a lot of people here before to see the robots, and we haven’t turned anyone down yet.”

Since the students were on a time crunch, they scheduled lming two days later on Oct. 5.

“We’d been busy and didn’t get a chance to clean the barn as much as we would’ve liked,” Tom said.

Thankfully, Bartlett grew up on a dairy in North Dakota.

“He was aware of what farming is like,” Jeremy said. “He made sure things looked clean and nice for the video. He understood the importance of making a consumer-friendly video. We didn’t get as many shots of the cows as we would’ve liked, but it worked out.”

For Bartlett, it made his job easy.

“It was something I was familiar with, which was helpful,” he said.

The lming crew came that morning and spent six hours interviewing and lming.

“Being interviewed wasn’t as easy as it looked,” Jeremy said. “When the camera was in my face, I got nervous and sometimes forgot what I was saying.”

Once they obtained the footage, Bartlett and Kenney informed the Mursus that the rst-place video would win $20,000, which would be split between the business and the lmmaker.

“I laughed it off a little,” Tom said. “I didn’t think we had a chance of winning it.”

The crew left and had a week to edit the content down to a two-minute video.

“They were really excited with the content they had,” Tom said. “They were a very courteous team.

We couldn’t have asked for a better group.”

Bartlett felt the same about the Mursus.

“We really enjoyed working with them,” he said.

“They were great.”

submitted the video along with 50 other entries.

That was the rst time the Mursus saw the video.

“I was surprised at how well it turned out,” Jeremy said.

The video went through two rounds of judging.

It was one of the 12 videos in the semi nal round and one of six videos in the nal round competing against ve other businesses – a gym, a composting company, a ski manufacturer, a y-shing rod development company and a doughnut shop – and would be voted on by the public.

“We watched the other videos, and they were really good,” Tammy said.

Voting was open to the public for the nal round between Nov. 1-15, and several businesses the Mursus work with encouraged people to vote for their video through social media outlets.

“It was like a re storm on Facebook,” Tom said.

“It was neat and scary at the same time.”

For Tammy, having their video make the nal six was a great opportunity to reach the public.

“It was a great way to educate them about what we do and how we care for our animals, and that food doesn’t just come from the store,” Tammy said.

The Mursus checked the website to keep track of how many votes their video was getting.

“We couldn’t believe the number of people voting for us,” Jeremy said. “There were even people overseas voting for our video.”

Tammy could not believe it either.

“We had a lot of support. It was fun to have people tell me they voted for us and that our video touched their hearts,” she said.

In the end, their video received 5,583 votes placing rst with the second place video earning 3,371 votes.

“It was really exciting for us,” Jeremy said. “We … had the best voters.”

Tammy agreed.

“We can’t thank them enough,” she said.

Bartlett felt what gave their video the edge in the competition was the fact that he and Kenney did not just focus on the robots.

“We wanted to touch more on the human side about why they chose to use the robots,” Bartlett said. “It’s something people can connect with. Besides, robotic dairy farms are something different in a broader sense because most people haven’t heard of them.”

With the check in the mail, the Mursus already have plans for their winnings.

“We’re not taking a trip to Hawaii,” Tom said.

“It’s going to go toward the dairy in some way.”

But the Mursus are not letting it get to their heads.

“We’re very lucky, and there are many dairy farms out there that could have won this,” Tom said.

“We’re not thinking about it too much. There are still a lot of things to do around the farm, and no amount of money is going to change that. We’re still the same people.”

A comfortable barn is important

Bentley discusses factors for building a new facility

CALMAR, Iowa – Build a barn for the comfort of the cows.

That was one of the main points of a discussion on cost-effective facilities, Dec. 1 at Calmar, Iowa. Jen Bentley, a member of the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Dairy Team, told participants in Iowa’s New Farmer Learning Network that a good barn helps cows three ways. “[First, it] provides adequate space for resting, eating, drinking and walking,” she said.

Second, she said, a properly designed and constructed barn protects the cow from severe environmental conditions. Third, a comfortable barn limits the likelihood of injury and disease.

An important aspect of a comfortable barn is having correctly sized stalls. Close-up and fresh heifers can get by with stalls 48 inches wide, while mature cows generally need stalls 50 inches wide. The University of Wisconsin recommends stalls that are 54 inches wide for mature cows which are close to calving, Bentley said.

Making stalls long enough is also important. Allowing a cow at least 8.5 feet can allow her to lie straight in the stall and can give her enough lunge space for comfortable and safe movement.

Bentley went on to talk about

bedded packs.

“If cows are housed on a bedded pack, adequate square footage per cow is needed, even the day after calving. We generally recommend at least 100 square feet per cow, and particularly during calving, up toward 120 square feet,” she said.

Bentley added that after cows calve, they are most likely to be shorted on space. A survey of Iowa dairy farms found that only 38 percent of the respondents gave each cow 100 to 120 square feet of space after calving.

One-third of the farms allotted that much space the day of calving, and slightly more than half did so during the days just before calving.

When it comes to choosing a bedding, should it be sand or cow mattresses? Bentley offered numbers gathered by the Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA) in Wisconsin. The data came from 176 herds that were larger than 200 cows.

The sand-bedded herds came out ahead in each of the ve categories. For rolling herd average, sand-bedded herds averaged 27,234 pounds of milk, compared to 24,695 for herds that had mattresses. That’s a difference of 2,539 pounds of milk.

It’s also a difference of seven pounds of energy-corrected milk per cow. Sand bedded cows averaged 91 pounds of energy-corrected milk, versus 84 pounds for

Sand-bedded herds had a higher transition cow index, too.

It was plus 263, compared to a negative 58 for mattress herds.

The transition cow index uses 14 factors from each cow’s DHIA records. The factors are used to project each cow’s milk production on her rst test date. Deviations – up or down – are applied to the herd as a whole. The new number that’s calculated is used to evaluate the effectiveness of the transition cow program. The higher the number, the more effective the transition cow program.

The somatic cell count (SCC) was lower for sand-bedded herds: 214,000 versus 227,000. And the cow turnover rate was lower: 36 percent for sand-bedded herds, compared to 38 percent for mattress herds.

No matter what kind of bedding a farm uses, it and the cows’ resting area must be comfortable.

Bentley said lactating cows need to lie down at least 12 hours out of every 24. The rest of the day is used for eating, drinking, standing, waiting to be milked, being milked and walking.

Some farms use a close-up pen for cows that are close to calving, Bentley said. Such a pen is a place for a cow to start to adjust to the new ration she will eat before she enters the milking string.

“The close-up pen also allows for any unexpected calvings,” Bentley said. “If we have ultrasounded and found twins, moving (the cow) into a pen sooner is important, as most of us

know that twins can come one to two weeks earlier than normal.”

A move to a close-up pen provides the opportunity to vaccinate, “particularly if the vaccines are used to provide maternal antibodies in the colostrum to be fed to the calf,” Bentley said.

“Cows need to be vaccinated at least four to ve weeks prior, for her to produce the antibodies in her mammary gland and produce a high-quality colostrum for the calf.”

Moving animals stresses them, Bentley said. Going to the close-up pen provides time to adjust to new herdmates.

“Research has shown that every time we move animals to a new pen, we disturb the social behavior. That causes a cow to reduce her feed intake for a day or so,” Bentley said.

Just when should a cow be moved to the nal pen before calving? A survey by ISU Extension and Outreach found that 32 percent of those asked said they move cows to calving pens at the rst signs of calving.

Sixteen percent moved cows to calving pens when calving was imminent. And 36 percent of those surveyed made that nal move three weeks before calving.

That same survey asked producers how they manage the day of calving. Thirty-eight percent of the farmers said they used traditional calving. That is, Bentley said, the cows are moved from their dry cow group to a maternity area within a few days of calving.

Another 38 percent of the farmers said they use just-in-time

calving. With this method, Bentley said, cows go from a pre-fresh pen to an individual pen or group pen when the calf’s arrival is imminent.

The rest of the surveyed farmer said they use socially stable calving. With this method, Bentley said, cows are kept in the same group throughout the dry period and the pre-fresh period.

They’re typically on a series of bedded packs or in some combination of freestall pens or on bedded packs for the nal stage of calving.

Bentley said when a cow is moved to a calving pen inuences both the cow and her calf.

“The University of British Columbia recently conducted a study on cow behavior during calving,” Bentley said. “If she is moved to her nal pen before labor or in the early stages of it, the length of stage two of her labor remains about 60 minutes long.

However, if we move that animal late in stage one or at the beginning of stage two, calving is delayed. The cow actually remains in stage two of labor nearly 40 minutes longer.”

Bentley offered these tips on maternity management: move cows into far-dry pens or closeup pens weekly; keep the number of pen moves to a minimum; move cows when they are in the early stages of labor; move them so they are stressed as little as possible; keep cows in individual pens or stalls only long enough to calve; avoid solitary connement; and make sure facilities and equipment are clean and have been sanitized.

Dr. Ruark discusses science behind soil health

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. – It is no secret that soil health is vital to crop growth and development. However, the science behind soil health is often misunderstood or overlooked.

Dr. Matt Ruark provided an overview of the biological measurements that help determine soil health during his presentation at the University of Wisconsin Discovery Farms Conference at the Glacier Canyon Conference Center in Wisconsin Dells, Wis., Dec. 13.

Ruark serves as an associate professor at UW-Madison in the department of soil science and is a UW-Extension soil scientist. He runs an integrated research and extension program, with current research projects focused on improving nitrogen use efciency in dairy, grain, vegetable and biofuel production systems.

Ruark began by saying soil health is a diverse concept, even amongst soil scientists.

“You could have 10 different scientists present on soil health and you would have 10 completely different presentations,” Ruark said.

While soil organic matter is still a determinant of soil health, Ruark said biological measurements give more insight into soil health.

“The biological measurements are the newer measurements that may provide insight to yield or nitrogen supply,” Ruark said. “These measurements include permanganate oxidizable carbon (POxC), potentially mineralizable carbon (PMC) and potentially mineralizable nitrogen (PMN).”

PMC is a measure of microbial

Beneath the surface activity of the soil and is a function of available carbon. More commonly known as soil respiration, PMC is a measurement of carbon dioxide over time during incubation, held at a specic temperature and moisture.

Farmers are able to measure their soil’s PMC level by use of a commercially available test called the Solvita eld test. Solvita is a carbon dioxide test that does not take place in a lab, but rather can be completed at home.

“Soil is placed on a paddle where it is wetted and incubated in a container for 24 hours,” Ruark said. “It provides a measure of soil respiration with minimal soil disturbance.”

Understanding a soil’s PMC level allows one to know the soil’s biological response. Carbon dioxide released by soil directly correlates to plant growth because of photosynthesis. When the appropriate amount of carbon dioxide is not available to the plant, it could be considered a limiting nutrient.

POxC is a method for estimating labile organic carbon, which is the fraction of soil organic carbon with the most rapid turnover time. Both POxC and PMC are responsive to changes in management on the farm.

“There are some trends with respect to management that have effects on POxC,” Ruark said. “For example, without tillage, POxC is promoted greater than PMC. With tillage, however, there is overall less oxidation, but PMC is promoted at the expense of POxC.” Other management practices that could have an effect on POxC and PMC include the use of compost, manure and cover crops. The use of compost improves POxC readings more than PMC, while manure application promotes PMC. The use of cover crops, however, is more variable based on the crops used and the location in which they are used.

“In Michigan, it was found that POxC responded to different crop systems and nutrient inputs,” Ruark said.

Finally, PMN is measured by incubating soil over time. The soil is incubated under anaerobic conditions by keeping nitrogen cycling to only the conversion of organic nitrogen to ammonium by measuring ammonium before and after incubation.

Ruark said that this measurement does not serve as a predictor of nitrogen supply in soil.

“The incubation has value as a comparative measure,” Ruark said. “It is not well-correlated with actual eld soil mineralization, which is dependent on weather. In other words, it matters when you take the soil sample.”

Ruark, who also serves as a faculty advisor for UW Discovery Farms, said there are current efforts in Wisconsin to determine how different management styles impact readings of POxC, PMC and PMN.

“Current efforts in Wisconsin include evaluating the effect of management on the same soil and evaluating the effect of management across different soils,” Ruark said.

There are currently 43 farmers in 11 counties participating in UW Discovery Farms’ Nitrogen Use Efciency Project. The project offers farmers and consultants the tools necessary to form a roadmap that supports how and why nitrogen is supplied. Those participating in the project work with UW Discovery Farms staff to evaluate current nitrogen management practices in order to ne-tune crop systems.

Ruark said knowing the biological measurements of a farm’s soil can lead a farm towards success in cropping.

“Soil health can be valuable as an assessment tool,” Ruark said. “Measures of soil biology through soil tests can ultimately add value to your farm.”

Farmer panel discusses cover crops

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. – Cover crops were the topic of conversation as three farmers assembled a panel at the University of Wisconsin Discovery Farms Conference Dec. 13 at the Glacier Canyon Conference Center in Wisconsin Dells, Wis. Joe Bragger from Independence, Wis., Nick Miller from Oconomowoc, Wis., and Dan Wiese from Greenleaf, Wis., each shared their solutions to common problems related to seed choices, equipment for use of establishment and the use of cover crops for more than cover.

Joe Bragger – Bragger Family Dairy With 295 cows and 270 acres, Bragger said his farm began cover cropping for a variety of reasons.

“We wanted to prevent soil erosion, nutrient sequestration, x nitrogen

and build organic matter,” Bragger said.

Bragger has planted a variety of cover crops, including winter wheat, winter rye, barley, clover, radish and turnip. Cover crops are seeded using a fertilizer buggy pulled behind a tractor.

Of the cover crops he has used, Bragger said radishes have been a great addition.

“Radishes move down through the soil prole while turnips tend to stay on top.

Nick Miller – Miller Farms Miller runs a cash grain operation with corn, soybeans and winter wheat.

He began raising cover crops six years ago using a Kinze planter to seed 15-inch rows.

Today, Miller uses a variety of application methods

microbes, and to increase yields,” Miller said.

While the majority of his reasons for cover cropping are focused on soil health below ground, Miller said he selects seed varieties that can help above ground, too.

“When we talk about cover crops, we are often focused about what is going on underground. With sunowers and the owering pea plants, we have benets above ground for the bee population, too,” Miller said.

Much like Bragger, Miller said he too began incorporating radishes and has been pleased with what they have added to his cropping systems.

“The tube of a radish is the storage for nutrients and the alleviator of your compaction,” Miller said.

This storage of nutrients has alleviated Miller’s need to sidedress nitrogen.

“We normally sidedress 45 to 120 pounds of nitrogen,” Miller said. “We have found that the

Dan Wiese – Wiese Brothers Farm Until 1995, Wiese and his family ran a cash grain operation in Greenleaf, Wis. At that time, they purchased a 900-cow dairy farm, which has since grown to a 12,000-head farm with 5,000 acres of land. During the growing season, Wiese raises alfalfa, corn and wheat. Following harvest, Wiese cover crops with triticale, radishes, turnips, brassica, various clovers, annual rye, oats and artic peas in multi-species mixes.

Wiese has tried a variety of seeding methods, including no-till, light tillage and conventional drill. Today, however, his farm uses a vertical till disc with an air seed box attached. Wiese said it has advantages which have added to his success in cover cropping.

“Planting cover crops used to be labor

intensive. Now, we have made it a one-pass deal,” Wiese said. “You cannot walk around our elds and see a single seed above ground. It has worked very well, and we are very satised.”

Wiese added that one of the biggest challenges in cover cropping for his farm has been manure application. In his experience, he has found that an early application after planting worked best.

“We apply manure after the cover crops are planted, while they are still very young and short.

They did amazing with that,” Wiese said. “They have the ability to put some nitrogen back into your elds, or at least store it.”

Wiese said adding cover crops to his elds has aided in soil health, water inltration, yield response, better drainage and less compaction. He hopes to one day overwinter all of his 5,000 acres.

“Cover crops have made a big difference for us,” Wiese said. “I plan to continue cover cropping and hope to eventually have all acres green going into spring planting.”

Raddatz switches focus to dairy

OSCEOLA, Wis. – For a lot of dairy farmers, their primary enterprise shifts to growing and selling cash crops after the cows leave the barn. Randy Raddatz is the other way around – sort of.

Raddatz, who farms 1,000 acres and custom harvests 1,500 acres for other farmers in Polk and St. Croix counties, took the plunge into dairy farming six months ago with his girlfriend, Alexus McKenzie. The couple milk 42 cows in a rented barn near Osceola, Wis., with plans to expand to 150 by next summer.

While he is still very much into cash cropping and custom work, Raddatz admitted he’d always wanted to be a dairy farmer.

“My parents sold the cows when I was 7 years old,” Raddatz said. “We started renting this farm about six months ago with no intention of milking cows, but for the house and the building space for equipment storage.”

However, when the opportunity to milk cows presented itself, Raddatz seized it.

“The owner of this farm decided to leave the parlor intact, as well as the other dairy equipment,” Raddatz said.

He and McKenzie both had worked on dairy farms in the past, so it became a matter of acquiring the cattle and help. Kyle Paulson, a family friend, works on equipment, and Jag Johnson, also a family friend, oversees the herd. His cousins, Tod and Heather Raddatz, also do his breeding and hoof trimming, so keeping as much business in the family as possible is a priority.

“Milking cows is all we’ve ever done,” McKenzie said. “Our work force is like one big family.”

Fortunately, Raddatz had been doing custom work for other dairy farmers who decided that cows would suit as fair payment in exchange for time and labor.

“We traded jobs to pay off debts, basically. They got nished feed and I got cows,” Raddatz said.

The couple, along with their

2-year-old daughter, Addie, soon made the transition to full-time dairy farming.

“I guess you could say our farm has always been unique,” Raddatz said. “We ran a horse boarding business for a while, but we let our parents take over that so we could focus on the cows and crops.”

While bringing the cows to their new home, a freestall barn with a double-9 parlor, was seamless, the learning curve was still steep.

“When you’re working on a farm, you learn the basics. But, when you’re on your own, there’s so many other things, like breeding, that take extra time to learn about,” Raddatz said.

The cows adjusted well to their new surroundings and being milked in a parlor, as they’d all been housed in tiestall barns previously. The milking equipment also came back to life without so much as a hiccup after months of sitting idle, save for the agitator in the bulk tank stirring up the milk too much that it caused the milk solids to disintegrate.

Just months after making their foray into dairy farming, Raddatz and McKenzie’s cattle are milking, on average, 72 pounds per day. The cows are housed in the freestall barn, with separate pens for milking cows and dry cows. As of right now, only one side of the parlor is being used, but with 42 cows, milking goes quick.

Calves are housed in a shed adjacent to the milking parlor, along with Addie’s pet goats.

Since Raddatz already had the planting and harvesting equipment in his inventory, the shed space, and traded work for cows, he is in a unique spot compared to many other dairy farmers starting up with depressed milk prices.

“We already had everything we needed, so we had very little input costs and, for the most part, we’re running a prot right now on the milk we ship,” Raddatz said.

With the exception of three Jerseys, the Raddatz herd consists largely of registered Holsteins. McKenzie wants to diversify the herd’s prole even more by adding Brown Swiss to the mix in the future.

All in all, switching gears from crops to cows has proven to be a win in Raddatz’s book.

“Everything we’ve gotten into has gone well, as far as custom work and farming goes. But this has been the best,” Raddatz said.

Addie, who goes down to the barn regularly, seems to agree. When asked if she liked the cows, she smiled and nodded.

Either way, Raddatz and McKenzie are intent to grow an alreadypromising dairy operation not only for themselves, but for their little girl as well.

SPOONER, Wis. – For Teresa Marker, it all started on the family farm.

Marker, a livestock nutritionist with Crystal Creek of Spooner, Wis., was chosen as this year’s Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation Excellence in Agriculture winner. The award is given to a deserving candidate who works in the ag- Teresa Marker riculture industry and derives the majority of their income from off-farm sources.

Marker resides in Shell Lake, Wis., with her husband, Dustin, and infant son, Jared. Even though she may not be on the home farm very much these days, the place she calls home still drives her to keep achieving great things.

“I grew up on a dairy farm in Elk Mound, Wis., with my parents, Loren and Diane Hanson,” Marker said.

One of four children, Marker started helping out on the farm at an early age with her siblings, Angie, Tim and Mike.

“All of my siblings are still involved in agriculture,” Marker said.

Meanwhile, Angie and her husband, Paul Bocksell, milk 200 cows near Pepin, Wis. Their parents also encouraged the Hanson kids to be involved in activities off the farm, like 4-H and athletics.

“As I got older, that continued into FFA involvement and college extracurricular activities as well,” Marker said.

“I played ve sports a year growing up.”

Marker particularly enjoyed the speaking contests offered through 4-H and FFA, which she said helped her to be comfortable speaking to crowds.

Marker attended the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and graduated in 2007 with a degree in agricultural education and an animal science minor. In Feb. 2008, she joined the staff at Crystal Creek and moved nearly 90 miles north from the home farm.

Not only does Marker come from a long line of farmers, but also from

a long line of Farm Bureau members.

That family legacy, in addition to her leadership and speaking abilities, helped cement her place in Wisconsin’s largest general farm organization.

“My grandparents and parents are Farm Bureau members, and I was contacted by then-district coordinator Wendy Kannel to serve on the state Young Farmers and Agriculturists (YFA) committee, on which I served for three years before being elected the state YFA chair,” Marker said.

Marker also served on the state Farm Bureau board of directors to lend the organization’s younger members, ages 18 through 35, a voice at the state level, and retired when her term ended in 2013.

Marker continued to stay involved with Farm Bureau after retiring from her chairpersonship to gain even more experience, and currently serves on the Barron County Farm Bureau board of directors as secretary/treasurer and chairperson of the promotion and education committee.

“Teresa is just a natural at being a spokesperson for agriculture, said Barron County Farm Bureau president Karyn Schauf. “She has a passion for agriculture she communicates to both her farm clients or nonfarm folks in an articulate and enthusiastic manner. We’re very fortunate to have her join our Barron County Farm Bureau board.”

This year brought about another major opportunity for Marker.

“This was my rst year applying for excellence in ag,” she said.

The award, geared toward agriculture industry professionals, has a twopart application process.

“The paper application was due on July 1, and consisted of essay questions based on my background, leadership positions held within Farm Bureau, what I’ve done to advocate for agriculture and issues facing the industry at large,” Marker said.

From the paper application, the top four candidates are chosen to give 25-minute presentations at the organization’s state annual meeting, held in Wisconsin Dells, Wis., the rst weekend of December.

Marker, with her breadth of experience and knowledge, and poise at the podium, was picked to be the state winner and will represent Wisconsin at the American Farm Bureau Federation annual meeting in Phoenix, Ariz., next month.

Marker had a tip for 4-H and FFA members looking to boost their speaking skills to anyone wanting to jumpstart their ease in holding an audience at attention.

“Start out with just a few people, and as your condence grows, you can grow your audience to where you feel comfortable,” Marker said.

Marker is forever grateful for all the irreplaceable qualities that being a farm kid instilled in her.

In FFA, I’ve held the ofces of vice president and treasurer. I’ve competed in dairy foods, dairy judging, dairy handling and oriculture.

Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? I’m always looking to further my education within the agriculture industry.

Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. My rst time to state fair in 4-H. I ended up winning my winter calf class and then winning overall junior champion of my breed.

My best experience in FFA is when our chapter went to the National FFA Convention.

What’s your favorite social media and why? Snapchat, because I love taking and sending pictures of my cows to people.

What are your career aspirations? I am planning on going to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls for a dairy science major with a minor in agriculture business to hopefully become either a dairy nutritionist or A.I. technician.

What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? One thing I’ve learned is nothing comes easy. If you truly want something, you have to work hard.

Who do you look up to and why? I look up to my dad and my grandpa. They have done so much for me and shown me so much about the industry. If it weren’t for them, I don’t know if I’d consider being part of the dairy program.

Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. I play trumpet in my school’s band.

Tell us some of your duties on the farm. Some of my duties on the farm are milking cows, feeding youngstock, watering, cleaning and bedding the animals and taking care of ill animals.

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? I’d make the farm economy more even with less highs and lows.

2. Feeding three times per day. Feeding milk replacer 3 times per day will help stabilize the pH in the rumen of the calf for better feed efficiency.

What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be an engineer, so I can build stuff.

If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. It wouldn’t be much bigger than our farm. I would have 50 cows with a navy blue metal barn with a lot of space inside. I would also have chickens and pigs so I could go outside to grab some eggs for breakfast. I would have cats to catch mice.

What’s your favorite dairy treat? French vanilla and cookies and cream ice cream.

What do you like to do during recess? When it’s warm with no snow, I like to play soccer, kickball and football. We also play cops and robbers. The robbers run and hide, and when the cops nd them, they put them in jail. Then the robbers try to escape.

DAIRY CALENDAR The Iowa State Dairy Association (ISDA) will hold its 2017 Annual Meeting Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, 7213 Nordic Avenue, Cedar Falls, Iowa. New sustainability group welcomes rst dairy processor Foremost Farms USA® has joined the Dairy Strong Sustainability Alliance – a diverse group of partners who have come together to ensure that all touchpoints in the production of dairy foods are continuously improving.

This new alliance is a collaborative group that represents all aspects of the dairy community: farmers, processors conservation groups, vendors and service providers, consumer packaged goods companies, retailers, government agencies, universities and dairy and trade non-prots. The goal is to show tangible continuous improvements in animal care, environmental conservation, food safety and other practices.

The Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association endorsed the alliance from its start this past August, and Foremost Farms, headquartered in Baraboo, Wis., represents the rst dairy processor that will contribute aggregate data, both from farms and the processing facilities.

“Our customers and their consumers ask questions every day about modern-day dairy farm and dairy plant practices. Farmers and processors are working to produce nutritious dairy products environmentally, socially and economically better. Tracing those continuous improvements on-farm and in our plants and amplifying the results with our customers will help us grow sustainable markets for milk,” says Michael Doyle, Foremost Farms president & CEO. The alliance focuses on establishing “milksheds” throughout Wisconsin. A milkshed is a group of farms working together with a dairy processor. Farmers and their processor use established tools to measure their environmental footprint and track progress toward being more sustainable. By combining farm data with processor data, a more complete story can be relayed to customers about the overall sustainability of Wisconsin’s dairy community.

“Foremost Farms has been recognized nationally for innovative processing techniques that save energy, water and reduce emissions. The cooperative has also already piloted an environmental stewardship program with a group of diverse farmer-members, said Maria Woldt, the sustainability lead for the alliance and director of industry relations for the Dairy Business Association, a Wisconsin-based partner in the alliance. “They are a natural t for the Dairy Strong Sustainability Alliance and we hope other processors will follow their lead.”

Land O’Lakes, Inc., honored for portion of $25 million gift to U of M College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Sciences On Dec. 2, College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resources Sciences (CFANS) staff, students, and graduates gathered along with representatives from Land O’Lakes, Inc., to celebrate the naming of the Land O’Lakes Collaboration Center in Borlaug Hall and to experience the high tech touch in the Land O’Lakes Active Learning Classroom in Ruttan Hall.

“These two spaces represent just part of an historic $25 million investment in the University of Minnesota,” said CFANS Dean Brian Buhr. “Land O’Lakes through its scholarships is supporting that foundational element of education to raise up society and agriculture’s future.

“By understanding history we see the future— these rooms will honor that history and inspire future generations of scholars to end hunger,” he said, referencing past students who include Norman Borlaug and E.C. Stakman, while addressing current and recent recipients of the Land O’Lakes Scholars program and the Global Food Challenge.

“The inuence Land O’Lakes has had on my college career is tremendous,” said Schossow, B.S. Plant Science ’16, who works at ProVision Partners Cooperative in Auburndale, Wis. “Being able to remain active and involved with CFANS and Land O’Lakes makes a drive from Wisconsin negligible. I felt honored to be included and hope to continue the relationship.”

University of Minnesota Foundation President and Chief Executive Ofcer Kathy Schmidlkofer underscored the value of the more than forty-year partnership between the dairy cooperative and the University.

She encouraged everyone to delve into the richness of the relationship at the blog, Building the Future Together. Dairy farm families make contribution to Super Bowl host committee’s ‘52 Weeks of Giving’ in Minnesota Midwest Dairy Council has announced it will provide $250,000 to provide Fuel Up to Play 60 Super School Breakfast grants – to support schools serving breakfast outside the cafeteria – to 52 communities across the state over the 52 weeks leading up to Super Bowl LII, to be held at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis in 2018.

Through funding from dairy farm families, the contribution will match other support to the Legacy Fund of the Minnesota Super Bowl Host Committee (MNSBHC), with grants of up to $10,000 per school.

The effort begins the day after Super Bowl LI in Houston, Texas, starting a 52-week countdown to Feb. 4, 2018. The support from dairy farm families is part of the MNSBHC’s focus on ‘Fun, Fuel, and Fundamentals,’ with a goal to leave a legacy of healthier children for years to come. Grants to schools from Midwest Dairy Council will provide Fuel Up to Play 60-branded equipment for schools to use in delivering enhanced ‘Super School Breakfast’ programs. Midwest Dairy Council staff members will also provide outreach and coordination with the 52 schools, which are selected by the MNSBHC and will be announced beginning in February.

“We are excited to be working with the Super Bowl committee to include Super School Breakfast in their 52 weeks of giving,” said Kathy Skiba, a North Branch, Minnesota, dairy farmer who serves on the Midwest Dairy board.

A serving of milk is offered with every school breakfast, and the meals often include cheese or yogurt as well. Midwest Dairy’s work with school breakfast has shown that when breakfast is served in the classroom, as a grab-and-go meal or after ďƒžrst period, more students participate. “When children get breakfast, they learn better and feel better, and we know dairy is part of a healthy school breakfast,â€? said Skiba. “A healthy breakfast is the fuel need for a successful school day,â€? said Dana Nelson, vice president of legacy for the MNSBHC. “We are thrilled to celebrate Super Bowl LII with 52 weeks of Super School Breakfast, providing 52 communities across our state with expanded options to ensure can start the day right.â€?

The funding supporting the MNSBHC supplements existing school breakfast efforts which are part of Fuel Up to Play 60, a program of dairy farm families and the National Football League that began six years ago. It involves students and the community in eating better and getting 60 minutes of activity each day. Fuel Up to Play 60 is carried out through student leadership in more than 1,422 schools across Minnesota, and more than 73,000 schools across the nation.

Dairy organizations applaud congressional letter to FDA asking for stricter enforcement of milk labeling standards A new congressional effort to prod federal regulators to crack down on the inappropriate labeling of products designed to imitate milk drew support today from the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) and the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF), which thanked lawmakers for speaking out on the issue.

In a letter written by Reps. Mike Simpson (R-ID) and Peter Welch (D-VT), and cosigned by a bipartisan coalition of 32 other members of the House, lawmakers urge U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Robert Califf to more aggressively police the improper use of dairy terms, which are used on the labels of many products that have no real dairy ingredients.

Federal standards of identity stipulate that milk and related foods have to be made from animal sources to use these established dairy terms. Thus, plant-based foods and beverages made of nuts and grains are “misleading to consumers, harmful to the dairy industry, and a violation of milk’s standard of identity,� the letter said. “We request that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) exercise its legal authority to investigate

and take appropriate action against the manufacturers of these misbranded products.�

Dairy organizations have voiced similar concerns in the past, urging FDA to restrict the use of dairy terms on labels of plant-based imitation products such as milk, cheese and yogurt. “You haven’t ‘got milk’ if it comes from a seed, nut or bean,â€? said Jim Mulhern, President and CEO of NMPF. “In the many years since we ďƒžrst raised concerns about the misbranding of these products, we’ve seen an explosion of imitators attaching the word ‘milk’ to everything from hemp to peas to algae. We don’t need new regulations on this issue, we just need FDA to enforce those that have been on the books for years.â€?

Michael Dykes, president and CEO of IDFA, said that while “imitation may be the sincerest form of ďƒ&#x;attery, dairy imitators do not naturally provide the same level of nutrition to the people buying them as milk does.â€? He noted that non-dairy beverages “can mislead people into thinking these products are comparable replacements for milk, when in fact most are nutritionally inferior.â€?

The congressional letter points out that while consumers are entitled to choose imitation products, “it is misleading for manufacturers of these items to proďƒžt from the ‘milk’ name. These products should be allowed on the market only when accurately labeled.â€?

Welch and Simpson noted that the European Union offers an example of how product terminology can be altered to make it less misleading. Regulators in the EU allow the use of the term “soy drink,� but prohibit “soy milk.�

Addressing this issue, the letter concluded, “will provide consumers with the accurate information they expect.�
