Crafting wooden creations for Christmas Pieper makes homemade gifts for family during the holidays

LONSDALE, Minn. – When it comes to making Christmas gifts, Ray Pieper might rival the elves in Santa’s workshop.

Instead of purchasing the majority of the presents each year, Pieper crafts his own wooden creations for members of his family, which totals 10 children, six daughter- and sonin-laws, and 14 grandchildren.

Pieper and his wife, Bridget, farm together with seven of their 10 children, milking 430 cows on their dairy near Lonsdale, Minn.

Although Pieper does not have an ofcial count of the number of projects he has made for Christmas, he said it is safe to guess he has crafted hundreds of wooden gifts over the past 30 years.

Most years after the harvest season is over and before his family’s Christmas celebration, Pieper spends many hours working in his shop creating gifts for the holiday season.

“It takes priority (after harvest is done), otherwise the

gifts get put on the back burner the rest of the year,” Pieper said.

Some years, like this year, when the weather doesn’t cooperate in the fall for a timely harvest, Pieper will not get as many presents nished before Dec. 25. It means a few family members will get their presents a little later.

“Usually after Christmas it gets cold out and I have more time. Otherwise, I have to make time,” Pieper said.

If a family member does not get a wood gift for Christmas one year, they will get one as a birthday present or at the next year’s Christmas.

At last year’s gift exchange, Pieper’s creations included three wheelbarrows, three hickory nightstands, six shelves, one children’s table and chair set, and numerous picture frames.

Other items he has made include crosses, shelves for above windows, recipe boxes, toy boxes in the shape of a barn, and several types of end tables and nightstands.

“The kids like to put in their requests,” Pieper said.

Piepers’ house – a stable for their nativity set. Other special projects included a kitchen table for Bridget, table decorations for their daughter Maizie’s wedding, a tractor for their son Nick’s wedding, and a sleigh pulled by a horse for their son Tim’s winter wedding.

“There was no pattern [for many of these projects] so it took a long time. I would work on it then bring it up and ask the family how they would change it. They had input,” he

Each of Pieper’s projects takes time. Although each one doesn’t necessarily require many hours each day, it takes many days to complete in order to let glue dry. For example, one of the more basic picture frames takes three hours total, but must be done over the course of three days.

“It’s a lot of cutting and gluing,” Pieper said.

Choosing the best type of wood for the project is fun for Pieper.

For one of the tables he created, Pieper used both light and dark colored hickory.

“I cut it into little pieces and then glued it back together to make a design,” he said.

qualities of each type of wood. For example, elm does not split and neither does aspen; however, aspen is a soft wood, Pieper said.

Pieper also works with maple, red cedar, walnut and brown cedar, among many others.

“You really have to study the wood and know the grain,” he said.

It is part of why Pieper likes working on wood projects.

“It’s a challenge and it’s on my time,” he said.

On the receiving end at Christmas, Pieper has been given many saws and sanders amongst other types of equipment he can use to continue his woodworking skills.

Pieper comes from a family of woodworkers. Both his dad and grandpa were carpenters and made furniture.

“I would just try to copy what they would do,” Pieper said about his earlier creations.

When Pieper took a woodworking class in high school, he started to hone

his craft. But it did not stick right away.

“I didn’t do many projects for years, especially when we were rst married [in 1973],” Pieper said.

In 1986, when the Piepers added on to their house, including a shop in the basement, Pieper nally had a space to continue the skills he had learned earlier in life.

Mostly, Pieper is self-taught and learns from each project along with from the mistakes he has made.

“Even now I have to x mistakes all the time,” he said. “You have to be able to x mistakes and be very patient with yourself.”

Safety is also an important factor for Pieper, who has come close to losing a nger or two.

Although the time between harvest and Christmas is always a rush to make the wooden creations, Pieper is happy to see the smiles on his family member’s faces when they open their gifts.

“It’s fun,” he said.

One long harvest 2017 crop year in Wisconsin behind historical average

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The day the combine parked in the machine shed for the year could not have come soon enough for Paul and Kevin Lubich.

The father-son duo, who milk 60 cows near River Falls, Wis., drove their harvesting equipment into the shed for the last time Dec. 14 after wrapping up 300 acres of soybeans and 250 acres of corn.

“I thought it was never going to end,” Kevin said. “We’re usually done in time for deer season, but it just dragged on and on.”

His father also shook his head in bewilderment and agreement.

“We started combining beans the second week of October and switched to corn when we got rained out,” Paul said. “Then it was back to beans, and then back to corn. It’s a lot by itself, and especially when you’re milking cows. We have a lot of college students helping with the cows, but they come and go like the wind.”

The Lubichs aren’t alone, either, and many acres of corn are still waiting to be picked across northern and western Wisconsin as the snow builds around the stalks.

The Lubich farm is home to 60 cows just northwest of River Falls, Wis.

DATCP attributed several reasons for this stat: little snow cover and uctuating temperatures in late winter and early spring, untimely rains during planting season that kept farmers out of the elds, above-average precipitation during the growing season that held off pollination and ear development, and a chilly, damp fall which prevented corn from drying down in a timely fashion.

“It started here in the spring with all the rain, and usually by the time we’re done planting corn and beans we’re ready to take off rst crop hay,” Paul said. “We were delayed by the rain to the point where planting corn had to come after rst crop, which came on pretty fast because of all the moisture it got.”

drag on with all of the rain, with many growers nding themselves replanting corn. DATCP stated that the statewide precipitation total from April through September of this year was 25.94 inches, or 3.5 inches above normal.

It was also noted by DATCP’s crop reporters that many growers were letting the crop stand longer to minimize drying costs, particularly with grain prices still below breakeven levels.

“There were times where Dad and I said, ‘Why are we doing all this work for $2.80 corn?’ The corn was at 25 percent moisture when we started this year, but it just would not dry down,” Kevin said.

“The cold and damp weather didn’t help this fall, and we had to cook it and cook it with the grain dryer. The past two or three years, the corn dried down fast.”

Fortunately for the Lubichs, they did not encounter any severe breakdowns, which could have made an extended harvest drag out even further.

However, it was not without a couple of hiccups along the way.

“The condensation from the dryer dripped down the wet bin auger and froze at the bottom, causing it to break down,” Paul said. “Then, a wheel bearing went out on the semi.”

Was 2017 in the top 10 longest harvests for the Lubichs?

“More like top two,” Kevin said.

“The only one that was longer than this one was when Dad had knee surgery right after Thanksgiving, thinking we’d be done by then. We didn’t nish until after Christmas that year.”

While some of their corn will be taken to an elevator and sold, most of it will go through the Lubichs’ feeder steers.

“That way, we come out ahead a little bit,” Paul said.

While harvest took longer than anticipated, yields exceeded their expectations given the late planting date and wet summer. For example, a eld they considered replanting ended up yielding 200 bushels per acre.

“We were wondering whether to replant it, and our seed guy, Kurt Afdahl, came out to look at it and said we’d be ne,” Paul said. “The elds at the home farm that got manure ended up going around 290 bushels per acre.”

With the combine put away and bins bursting with corn, the Lubichs are glad to have nished a long and unusual growing season.

“Now it’s time to get caught up with the cows,” Paul said.

The Martins were able to install a used double-8 herringbone parlor, as well.

Half of the cows were milked in a parlor while they were away, and the other half were milked in a tiestall barn.

“The rubber oor mats make milking really nice,” Lavern said. “The cows that were milked in a parlor were the easiest to start moving through the parlor when they came home.”

The cows came home to a completely new facility, with the milk cows setting their hooves in the new barn for the rst time on Oct. 3 and the dry

cows coming home later.

“With all the changes, it’s hard to tell if they’re up or down in production, but they’re holding their own,” Lavern said.

The Picknells also had their hands full with rebuilding their home, which had the garage thrown into its side, and building a heifer shed, two more sheds, a garage, and putting up a new silo with one more to come.

The enclosed heifer shed houses all of the Picknells’ youngstock ranging from calves on milk, whose pens aren’t nished yet, all the way up to bred heifers.

and under one roof,” Cory said.

“It was about eight or nine weeks before we could move back into the house,” Janelle said. “We were staying in a camper, but I had access to the laundry room and basement during that time.”

She then added, laughing, that she had always planned on getting new cabinets.

“This just sped it up a little bit,” Janelle said.

Meanwhile, the Martins had to put a new roof on their heifer barn, which was only a couple of years old itself.

“We’d just built it in 2015,” Rhoda said.

Between the joy of having their cows come home after such a traumatic event, and the kindness of their families, friends, neighbors and total strangers, one major emotion bubbles up to the surface –

gratitude. As an example, people lent the Picknells their own vehicles until they could purchase new ones, and the Martins had help coming from multiple states to build their new barn.

“The amount of people helping us was unbelievable,” Janelle said. “Everything will be nicer than it was before when it’s all done.”

MADISON, Wis. - The New Year will ďƒžnd Pam Ruegg, University of WisconsinExtension milk quality specialist, back in her native state of Michigan. Ruegg will head up the animal science department at Michigan State University, East Lansing.

She has been a professor in the dairy science department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for nearly 20 years, working on milk quality, and animal health and well-being. Dairy farmers probably know Ruegg through her work and presentations about preventing and treating mastitis.

A “Yoo-per,� or native of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (U.P.), Ruegg said her work with a dairy veterinarian years ago led her to her spot in life. “I really like working with dairy cows and I like working with farmers,� Ruegg said. “The systems are complex, and I like complex problem solving. “I like contributing to the production of food, which I think is important,� she said. “Milk is a phenomenal nutritional source.�

Ruegg said she likes being a part of the dairy industry. “I think what we do in the dairy industry is important. I think the industry is super interesting and it’s fun, because dairy people are fun,� she said.

Ruegg earned her bachelor’s and doctoral degrees at Michigan State.

She also earned a degree in preventive veterinary medicine from the University of California-Davis. She was in California during the farm crisis of the 1980s. “I could see that the future of the dairy industry was going to be very different, and there was going to be a shift to bigger farms. I wanted to go out and learn how to manage bigger farms, as a veterinarian.

That’s why I moved to California. I could see that future coming,� she said.

When she left the Golden State, Ruegg went to Prince Edward Island. There she worked with small farms.

These days, Ruegg is sort of a Sherlock Holmes of mastitis. People regularly seek her help in cracking troublesome cases. “I answer a lot of phone calls from veterinarians and farmers. That’s a pretty big part of my job,� she said.

Since mastitis does not recognize national boundaries, the calls do not come from just the Badger State. Ruegg said she probably gets one phone call a month from another country. “When I get called,� she said, “it probably means the case is complicated and local people have had trouble solving the problem.�

One mastitis case that stands out in her mind involved a fantastic farm with high production and beautiful cows, Ruegg described. The farm owner treated any sick cows himself, even though it was a larger operation.

Despite his treatments and care, cows with mastitis began running into a roadblock. They’d start to get well, but then relapse. Those ill cows wound up in the sick pen over and over again.

So Ruegg collected somatic cell count (SCC) numbers on each sick cow. Then she examined the way the farm was treating those sick cows and decided to remove one part of the treatment protocol. After a couple of months – with one aspect of the

treatment taken away – the cows recovered.

During her time at UW-Madison, Ruegg traveled to 35 countries. But some of her most memorable work took place right in Wisconsin. “I am tremendously proud of the Milk Money program,� Ruegg said.

Milk Money was a program funded by the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board.

It ran approximately six years, Ruegg said.

Its goal was to lower farms’ bulk tank SCC so farmers could earn more money in the way of quality premiums and help stanch the loss of milk production caused by mastitis.

Seven hundred herds around the state were enrolled.

Milk Money teams were formed, and they included veterinarians and Pamela Ruegg county Extension UW-Madison agents. The teams worked closely with dairy producers to battle mastitis and improve milk quality.

When Milk Money began, the bulk tank SCC in Wisconsin averaged more than 300,000. When the program ended, the average, statewide bulk tank SSC had fallen to roughly 200,000. “I think the Milk Money program contributed quite a bit to that,� said Ruegg. “I am tremendously proud of the Milk Money program.�

Some of the SCC decline was due to changing government regulations, Ruegg added. Farmers simply were no longer allowed to sell higher-SCC milk.

Times have changed, and Ruegg ďƒžgures Milk Money could not work today. “If I was starting here today, I would never be able to run that program,â€? she said. “Today there just is not the same amount of local Extension agent presence.

We were really dependent on that local Extension agent.�

Part of Ruegg’s Wisconsin work focused on helping dairy producers use antibiotics wisely and properly in their war against mastitis. It’s a war in which farmers and veterinarians must remain vigilant, because the quest for top-notch milk will not end. “Processors are now driving the ship on whether or not they want your milk. One of the things they demand is high quality,�

Ruegg said.

And since there’s no shortage of milk, processors can be picky about the milk they choose to buy. “The future,� Ruegg said, “is going to be about increased demand to produce high-quality milk with standardized processes that are somewhat dictated by the global dairy processors. There will be very little tolerance for farms that don’t meet the criteria they think consumers want.�

Although Ruegg is moving back to the Wolverine State, she will retain an afďƒžliation with UW-Madison as an emeritus dairy science professor.

No matter where she works, Ruegg does not expect the problems of mastitis and producing quality milk to be solved anytime soon. Ruegg likes to tell the story of when her mother visited from Michigan.

Ruegg told her mom she was going out to farms that day to talk about mastitis control.

Her mother, Ruegg laughingly said, “Just looked at me with this enormous amount of disappointment and very sincerely said, ‘You know, you’ve been working on that for like 15 to 20 years.

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am a member of the Bethel Generators 4-H Club, North Fayette Valley FFA Chapter, Iowa Holstein Association, National Ayrshire Association, National Milking Shorthorn Association and the National Holstein Association.

Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? I am involved in 4-H and FFA, because it gives me many opportunities, whether it’s competing in contests or being an ofcer. It allows me to meet people in my state and across the nation. Being a part of the various dairy cattle associations allows me to meet so many people who are all passionate about the dairy industry.

Out of all of these organizations, FFA is my favorite because of the leadership experiences it offers, as well as attending various conventions.

Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/ organizations. My experience while being a Bethel Generators 4-H member are extraordinary. We have renovated barns and built a new barn on the fairgrounds. In these projects, we raised close to $300,000 dollars. Since we did the fundraising ourselves, we gained many lifelong skills by doing this.

Through FFA, I have been a part of many judging teams and CDE events, but my favorite event has been conduct of meetings. Last year, my team were state runner-ups. This year, we have hopes to become state champions. In the various dairy associations I have been involved in, I have showed at

What’s your favorite social media?

Snapchat because it allows you to communicate with people from all over the world.

What are your career aspirations? I hope to attend Iowa State University, majoring in either large animal vet or ag communications, while specializing on the dairy side of the ag industry.

What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? It has given me the opportunity to become a better leader and public speaker. I’ve become more reliable for my teammates, as well as the opportunity to have an impact on another person’s life.

Who do you look up to? Katie Wolf.

She is a person who always has a smile on her face, and her positive attitude and work ethic always affects the people around her.

Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. I absolutely hate being late to anything and everything.

Tell us some of your duties on the farm. I have bought many heifers and a few cows from various sales. So anything to do with them is always my job. I typically will make sure all animals are fed morning and night.

In the winter months, I make sure no waters are frozen. I also work on a Holstein dairy farm nearby that milks around 300 cows.

Pedigree Analysis of 2017 National Holstein Show winners now online Holstein Association USA has released its annual Pedigree Analysis of National Holstein Show winners. These lists provide a picture of the genetics behind the cattle receiving show ring accolades at the highest levels of competition.

The Pedigree Analysis is updated each fall, following the last National Holstein Show of the year. Included are lists of Leading Sires, Leading Maternal Grandsires, and Leading Sire Stacks of National Show Winners. Each category features separate lists for heifers and cows, along with an overall list. In addition, viewers will nd other interesting information, such as the average classication score for each class and historical data from previous years.

Holstein females included in the analysis were those that placed in the top three in their respective age class at a National Holstein Show in 2017, which included a total of 175 different heifers and 227 different cows.

Val-Bisson Doorman-ET claimed the title of Overall Leading Sire for the 2017 National Holstein Show winners, siring 57 daughters who placed in the top three of their classes. He was also number one on the heifer list, with a total of 45 heifers. For the second year, Maple-Downs-I G W Atwood-ET was the second-ranking sire overall and number one on the cow list, with a total of 38 cows placing in the top three. Twenty-four bulls each sired at least four daughters placing in the top three in their class at a 2017 National Holstein Show.

Braedale Goldwyn topped the Leading Maternal Grandsires heifer and overall lists, siring 32 heifers and 60 cows overall. Regancrest Dundee-ET was the number one maternal grandsire of cows, and number two on the overall list.

The combination of Val-Bisson Doorman-ET x Braedale Goldwyn topped the Overall Leading Sire Stacks of 2017 National Holstein Show winners and the list of Leading Sire Stacks for Heifers. Val-Bisson Doorman-ET x Maple-Downs-I G W Atwood-ET was the second Leading Sire Stack overall, while Gillette Windbrook-ETS x Braedale Goldwyn led the list of Leading Sire Stacks for cows.

Accredited nancial counselors: Who we are and what we do A recent survey conducted by the Association of Financial Counseling and Planning Education, which focused on retirement in the state of Ohio, showed that only 41 percent have a nancial plan. Agreement on plans to merge Koepon and CRI The boards of directors of Koepon Holding BV and Cooperative Resources International (CRI) have reached agreement on a plan to merge their organizations. The agreement is non-binding, and subject to due diligence and other customary conditions, including receipt of requisite governmental and other consents and approvals. Once completed, nal agreement will be conditional upon approval by both boards of directors as well as the delegates of CRI. If successful, the organizations plan to formalize the merger by mid-2018.

Both Koepon and CRI, through Alta Genetics and GENEX, are global providers of bovine genetics and related services. Similarly, Koepon and CRI subsidiaries, Valley Ag Software and AgSource, provide herd management and information services to dairy producers. Koepon and CRI also have other businesses centered around services and products for agricultural producers. Koepon is privately owned, and CRI is cooperativelyowned by its farmer-members. Study shows canola meal boosts milk production in early lactation diets In a new study, cows fed a diet with canola meal at calving and continuing for four months post-calving produced about 9.6 pounds of milk per day more than cows on a soybean meal diet. These results are from ongoing research conducted by Ken Kalscheur, PhD, research animal scientist at the U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center in Madison, Wis. Dr. Kalscheur theorized that the increased production is due to the additional methionine, an essential amino acid, that canola meal contributes to the cow’s diet. “There is a growing body of work in dairy nutrition research demonstrating that feeding methionine in early lactation or even possibly in the dry period is very positive both for milk production and for reproduction during the course of a full lactation,” he said. “Canola meal ts into the theory that providing methionine in early lactation improves productivity as well as the health of the animal.”

This is the rst early lactation study that has focused on the inclusion of canola meal, he added. Most studies with canola meal have been with cows in mid- to late-lactation.

While a rumen protected methionine supplement could be added to a diet with soybean meal, Kalscheur pointed out that the supplement is fairly expensive, and generally, soybean meal is higher in price as well.

“Canola meal is a high-quality feed; it’s better in methionine than soybean meal and better in lysine than distillers grains,” he said. “Canola meal in combination with other feeds will probably ll a niche better than any feed by itself.”

Glen Broderick, PhD, a research scientist at the Dairy Forage Research Center for 32 years, studied canola meal as a protein supplement beginning in 2010. He explained that compared to soybean meal, “more of the protein in canola meal escapes the rumen — less protein is broken down by the microorganisms in the rumen — and there is a better amino acid pattern in that protein. The result is more methionine in the rumen undegraded protein (RUP) from canola meal than in the RUP from soybean meal.”

The way dairy cows are fed in North America, methionine is most often the rst limiting amino acid, according to Dr. Broderick. That means it’s naturally in the shortest supply in the protein digested by the cow, and the cow needs more for optimum production.

“The RUP of canola meal is higher in methionine than soybean meal, plus there is more RUP with canola meal – enough to improve production,” he said. “The protein is not as concentrated in canola meal as it is in soybean meal, which has to be taken into account when balancing rations, but the nutritional value of the protein in canola meal is better for the dairy cow.”

In addition to higher milk production, the high level of methionine in the RUP of canola meal also improves protein quality of the milk, according to Broderick. “The amino acid pattern of canola meal RUP results in increased concentration of protein in the milk, giving the producer an economic advantage,” he said.

Steve Woodford, PhD, a consultant with Nutrition Professionals Inc., in Sheboygan Falls, Wis., began including canola meal in diets when mills in his area rst started to source it.

“In research, it appeared that canola meal was superior to soybean meal in amino acid balance, and in feeding trials, it seemed canola meal performed as well or better than soybean meal, which initially is why I included it in diets,” he said. “I tell my clients it’s a cost-effective protein; it allows me to keep the diet cost down, even if it’s not the least-cost protein, by using it and not purchasing protected amino acids, which would bring the cost higher.”

Dr. Woodford, who has been serving primarily eastern Wisconsin for 30 years, says he uses canola meal as a protein source in diets to improve performance and milk protein.

“Cheese plants will pay a bonus for extra protein above and beyond the federal marketing order,” he said, and in his area, almost all milk goes into cheese.

Marty Faldet, PhD, with GPS Dairy Consulting, LLC, works with herds in Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan. He has been feeding canola meal for more than 10 years, mostly for clients in the Green Bay area.

“Canola meal really stood out as a good buy, even though initially there was not too much research around it at that time,” he said.

“I have always favored soybean meal, giving it a better value on energy and adjusting mainly on a protein basis,” Dr. Faldet added. “But over the years, we’ve come to understand the balancing of amino acids and using modeling programs for dairy cow nutrition that help us understand that we are gaining methionine when we change from soybean meal to canola meal.”

DAIRY CALENDAR Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will offer a new program for female beef and dairy producers held in northeast Iowa starting in January. “Boots in the Barn” is a three-part series for women involved in cattle production. Three workshops will be offered on Jan. 4, 11 and 18. Dairy topics will be discussed from 1-3 p.m. and beef topics from 6:308:30 p.m. Three counties in Iowa -- Clayton, Delaware, Dubuque -- are home to 25 percent of Iowa’s dairy herds and 5 percent of Iowa’s beef cow herds. Dairy and beef production have a lot in common, such as reproduction and basic ruminant nutrition. However, they have slightly different perspectives, such as nutritional requirements for maximum milk production, feed quality requirements, and grazing options.

• Jan. 4, Commercial Club Park Community Room, 225 11th St SE, Dyersville. Leo Timms, Morrill professor and dairy specialist at Iowa State University, will talk about milk quality and udder health for the afternoon dairy session. The beef session will be taught

by Denise Schwab and a local veterinarian and will feature beef herd health and a herd management calendar.

• Jan. 11, Fast Stop Shed, 32199 Old Castle Rd, Dyersville. Dr. Grant Dewell, associate professor in beef production and beef veterinarian at Iowa State University, and others from Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine with “Frosty the cow.” Frosty is a life-size cow model used to teach calving management, dystocia and delivery to veterinary students. Participants will have the opportunity to deliver a fully jointed life-size calf, and practice difcult deliveries on a model.

• Jan. 18, Commercial Club Park Community Room, 225 11th St SE, Dyersville. Hugo Ramirez, assistant professor and extension dairy specialist at Iowa State University, will focus on quality feed delivery and tools to measure feed quality. Attendees are encouraged to bring along a feed sample for discussion. The beef session will discuss quality silage and Denise Schwab will discuss basic beef feed budgeting and cost control.

Registration fee is $25 and covers all three workshops. Register online by Dec. 28.

With nearly 2.5 million cattle in four Midwest states, university extension services in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin are teaming together to offer the Driftless Region Beef Conference. The fth annual event will be held Jan. 25-26, at the Grand River Convention Center in Dubuque, Iowa. The driftless region in these states contains rolling hills, streams and karst soil topography. Since soil and water conservation is best accomplished when much of this land is seeded for forage and livestock consumes those forages, the conference will focus on efcient and economic forage and beef production.

The conference will begin at 1 p.m. Jan. 25 with a program concentrating on cover crops and mycotoxins in feed. An evening discussion on success with cover crops feature a producer panel. The Friday morning agenda features Jamey Kohake from Paragon Investments, and six breakout sessions for feedlot operations and cow-calf producers followed by a market outlook. Key speakers include Kohake, Morgan Hayes, Kentucky University; Jim Johnson, Noble Research Institute; Trevor Smith, the University of Guelph; Alison Robertson, Dan Andersen, Chris Clark, Iowa State University; Dan Schaefer, University of Wisconsin; Josh McCann, University of Illinois, and Geoffrey Brink, USDA-ARS-Dairy Forage Research Center. The early registration fee is $85 per person and must be received prior to midnight, Jan. 12. The price increases to $115 after that date. The GrassWorks Grazing Conference has put together an amazing line up of speakers to cover everything from underground, at the ground level and above ground.

Topics include natural medicine chests, pastured pork, robotic milking systems, marketing, soil microbes and so much more. Sessions will include dairy, beef, horse, pigs, sheep, goats, and chickens. If you have any of these aforementioned animals, you denitely should attend. This year’s conference will be held at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells, WI and will feature over 40 sessions and a tradeshow with over 40 exhibitors. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear thought-provoking and inspiring speakers. In keeping with grass-based leadership in local and sustainable farming, the meals offered at the conference consist almost entirely of seasonal, local, grass-fed selections from the best in graziers and farmers from around the region.

Five well-respected speakers will be featured at the 2018 conference.

• Greg Gunthorp, Indiana farmer that will talk about “A 30,000 foot view of Sustainable Agriculture” on Thursday, Feb. 1.
