Koopmanns develop routine with robots

EPWORTH, Iowa – A nearly complete trigon milking parlor sits unused at Koopmann Brothers Dairy near Epworth, Iowa.

Only the automatic takeoffs from the setup were sold when the farm installed two Lely robots in 2015. But aside from the parlor, Chad and Brent Koopmann were able to put their existing dairy facilities to good use in the new conguration housing their milking herd.

The brothers began preparing their existing freestall barn for robots in 2014, result-

ing in housing and handling distinct to their dairy’s needs.

Some things did not change much. For example, when they milked in the parlor, the cows grazed at night and were fed TMR during the day. Now, in order to clean the alleys and to bed the mattresses, the Koopmanns’ cows still leave the barn, passing through a foot bath on their way out.

“We call it recess,” Chad said. “The cows are like kids; if you so much as rattle the chain on the door, every cow heads there.”

However, updates to their cow handling led to the Koopmanns’ belief that production increases since putting in

robots came from better cow comfort rather than more frequent milking. They installed new mattresses, switched to exible free stalls and extended the stall platforms to 10 feet. Ten 60-inch fans now provide constant air exchange in the tunnel-ventilated facility, along with two 24-inch fans in the barn’s peak.

He also noted how it promotes cow ow, since cows get up to feed each time it makes a pass and are more likely to visit the robots at that time.

“We found it’s better to ne tune your feed bunk than your pellet,” Brent said. “We might tweak pellet ingredients just a bit.”

With the robots, the dairy rarely synchronizes breeding for a cow. They use motion data from the robots for

heat detection. The robots do not track rumination, but it is something the brothers could add later.

All in all, the Koopmanns said they would not go back to milking in that trigon parlor.

“Basically, we were missing a step milking two times a day,” Brent said. “Milking was all we’d ever get done if we had gone to three times in the parlor.”

Davis family continues partnership with U of M Dairy will be site for hands-on education through 2023

ST. PETER, Minn. – Dr. Joe Armstrong is thankful his veterinary education included clinical and hands-on training at the Dairy Education Center at New Sweden Dairy near St. Peter, Minn. It is useful for his current practice as a veterinarian for Anderson Veterinary Services in Zumbrota, Minn.

“It’s such a large and busy place,” said Armstrong, who graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in 2015. “You learn how to be around a dairy … how to be helpful and not a hindrance to the daily operations.”

For the past 10 years, the University of Minnesota has partnered with the Davis family to provide on-site training to students at the family’s dairies, New Sweden Dairy, Northern Plains Dairy and High Island Dairy. The two parties recently announced they have extended the partnership to 2023.

Mitch Davis, managing partner in the dairies, is happy his family can help students excel at their education.

“I think it’s doing a good thing,” Davis said. “It’s helping students get a base of knowledge and practical education they wouldn’t have gotten otherwise.

They are discovering new products and practices. It’s all healthy for the industry.

The U of M doesn’t have to use money for the [operating costs of the] dairy. It helps the taxpayers, students and the industry.”

His family’s loyalty to the university comes from three generations who beneted from its education.

New Sweden Dairy, built in 2008, hosts the bulk of the on-site training, with dorm space for students to live when they are at the dairy for rotations.

Together, the three farms milk about 9,000 cows and experience 10,000 calvings annually.

Dr. John Fetrow, a retired University of Minnesota professor, spearheaded the relationship.

“This was Dr. Fetrow’s design – both the dairy facility and the academics,” Davis said. “It was his brain child.”

Dr. Erin Royster, assistant professor in dairy production medicine, stepped into Fetrow’s place after his retirement.

Royster said having students work dayto-day with a commercial dairy gives them learning opportunities.

“There’s no place I know of where they get that type of experience on that many animals at one time,” she said. “To

get good hands on training … would be difcult in the middle of the Twin Cities.

It gives our students in-depth training.”

New Sweden Dairy is the site for two types of rotations for veterinary medicine students.

During the clinical rotation, students do procedures, treatments and surgeries, and screen several hundred fresh cows.

In more recent years, the university developed a production medicine rotation that focuses on students examining other aspects of the dairy beyond animal health. They study the dairy as a whole system – nutrition, reproduction, milk quality, milk equipment and lameness among other topics.

“It’s one of the biggest strengths of our program,” Royster said. “It’s additional next-level skills. Producers need a vet who knows their entire business.”

Armstrong, who helped develop the rotation as a student, said knowing more than clinical treatments will be benecial once students are practicing in the eld.

“The goal is to gure out how to stop res before they start and avoid clinical treatment,” Armstrong said. “There’s so much more to a dairy operation than the veterinary side. Dr. Fetrow emphasized if you do only traditional veterinary work, you’re not helping that farm as much as you think. We have to help them help themselves.”

The partnership between the university and the Davis family also allows for continuing education for practicing veterinarians along with training for nonveterinarians such as agriculture educators. It also supports research projects.

“It helps us generate research questions from the students – what questions they have on a commercial dairy,” Royster said.

Research topics have included transition management, reproduction protocols, dry cow management, calf housing and milk quality among others.

Over the past 10 years, over 9,000 people have visited the dairy. It has also provided a training site for many veterinary students, and 1,400 dairy industry professionals in continuing education sessions.

“It’s an incredible learning experience for the students and the faculty because it’s a real dairy,” Royster said.

“We’re pretty proud of it.”

Armstrong is glad his future colleagues will have more opportunities to experience real-life dairying during their education.

“It’s a dynamic relationship, and it takes a lot of work,” Armstrong said about the partnership between the Davis family and the University of Minnesota.

“I’m thankful for the Davis family to allow the relationship to continue.”

Funding for organic research secured in farm bill

Thanks to the hard work of OFRF and a broad coalition of organic champions, we have secured historic wins for organic agricultural research in the 2018 Farm Bill, which will provide $395 million for organic agriculture research and education over the next 10 years. This milestone is the biggest win for organic farming in the Farm Bill in decades, securing permanent funding for organic research at USDA. These funds will dramatically expand competitive grants through USDA’s Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative (OREI), ensuring organic farmers and ranchers have the tools and technology to meet their unique challenges and the growing demand for organic products—leading to a more resilient and sustainable agricultural system that values healthy environments and healthy people.

“Throughout our history, OFRF has worked to ensure that organic producers have the science-based information and resources necessary to support the nation’s demand for healthier food and farming systems,” noted OFRF Executive Director Brise Tencer. “Since 2002, OREI research has supported cutting edge scientic inquiry into organic practices and production systems. With this bill, Congress has made progress toward fullling organic agriculture’s potential to provide broad environmental and economic benets for all.”

As the Farm Bill heads to the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives for nal consideration, we support the landmark wins for organic agriculture, including the signicant funding increase for OREI and increased enforcement authority of the National Organic Program (NOP). In addition to these milestones, the Farm Bill includes several other programs that impact organic farmers and ranchers such as the National Organic Certication Cost Share Program (NOCCSP) and funding for the Organic Data Initiative (ODI).

Details on the Organic Provisions in the Farm Bill – $395 million in OREI funding

over the next 10 years. $20 million/FY 2019-2020, $25 million/FY 2021, $30 million/FY 2022, $50 million/FY 2023 and ever year after.

– $5 million for the Organic Production and Market Data Initiative, which helps facilitate the collection of organic production and market data.

– $40.5 million for NOCCSP that offsets part of farmers’ organic certication costs. This program is facilitated by $24 million in new funding, plus an additional $16.5 million in funding that was not used for the program from the previous Farm Bill.

– $5 million for technology upgrades, increased enforcement authority, and increased funding authorization for the NOP. – Payment limits for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program Organic Initiative are increased to $140,000.

– Organic and sustainable agriculture practice are now part of the continuing education for Crop Insurance Agents and Loss Adjusters.

– Funding from the Conservation Stewardship Program will be allocated to States to support organic production and transition to organic production.

– Current voting and membership practices of the National Organic Standards Board are codied.

– Farmers that have land in the Conservation Reserve Program can being to transition the land to certied organic 3 years prior to the expiration of their Conservation Reserve contract.

– State Agriculture Mediation Programs shall now cover issues that impact certied organic production.

– The Market Access Program shall encourage export of USDA certied organic products.

Chef Sean Sherman will present “The (R)evolution of Indigenous Food Systems of North America” on Jan. 10. Farmer and registered dietician Mary Jo Forbord will present “Organic Food from Minnesota: Our Roots and Future” on Jan. 11.

Sean Sherman, a member of the Oglala Lakota Nation, is an internationally renowned chef and indigenous foods scholar. Sherman’s main culinary focus is to bring back a sense of Native American cuisine to today’s world—revitalizing indigenous foods systems in a modern context. In 2018, Sherman’s rst book, The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen, won the James

Beard medal for Best American Cookbook. His entrepreneurial ventures include The Sioux Chef, a catering and food education business, and the Tatanka Truck, a food truck that features pre-contact foods of the Dakota and Minnesota territories.

Sherman was recently awarded a Bush Fellowship to research, cultivate, and share indigenous food systems. With his team, he also created a nonprot, North American Traditional Indigenous Food Systems, to work on strengthening communities and creating opportunities through indigenous food.

PEOSTA, Iowa – In the spring of 2014, Bill and Jeff Lawler hosted an Open Barn Day to share their experience from installing four milking robots and remodeling a freestall barn on their dairy farm in Peosta, Iowa.

This fall, visitors were invited back to Lawler Dairy by Iowa State University Extension Nov. 14, which scheduled nine tours of robotic facilities in Iowa over 30 days.

This time, the Lawlers had more experiences to share.

“The longer you’re in this, the more you’re going to gure out,” said Jeff Lawler, who owns the dairy in partnership with his father, Bill.

Jeff’s wife, Colleen, and two of their sons are also involved.

“It’s about management,” Lawler said. “You can manage as much as you want. If the robots are going to work, you have to pay attention. But the computer makes it easy. In 15 minutes, I have everything I need [to manage cows].”

Looking back, Lawler said the rst months with the new system were difcult.

“But within six months, you’d never know things were different,” he said.

With each cow’s next freshening, the animal went to the robots quickly.

Only one heifer was sold because it would not adapt.

Along the way, the Lawlers also discovered that for them, Jersey cows did not work because of their size.

The Lawlers previously milked 200 cows in a double-8 parallel parlor.

The parlor equipment was sold and the building was converted to calf housing. The freestall barn was expanded and updated. A manure system and new

heifer barn were built. They added an automatic feed pusher shortly after installing the robotic milking units.

The freestall barn has been switched to waterbeds and ne lime. The previous sand bedding was not compatible with the new manure handling system.

With more records and activity monitors on the cows, the Lawlers’ cows are being bred sooner. Cows not pregnant by 80 days fresh are synchronized. They use a beef bull for cleanup.

As technology has progressed, Lawler said there are more features on the newest models of robots compared to the version they have. He and his father hope updates might be available.

Knowing what they have learned, he also wishes he had put in a foot bath when updating the barn.

“Right or wrong, we’re committed to long-time dairying,” Lawler said.

DFA buys Agropur facility in Minnesota Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) and Agropur announced on Dec. 17 that they have entered into an agreement for DFA to acquire Agropur’s St. Paul, Minn., facility.

The acquisition by DFA, which is subject to satisfaction of customary closing conditions, will expand the farmer-owned cooperative’s extended shelf-life capabilities and introduce aseptic processing into its business portfolio.

“This acquisition offers an opportunity to grow our customer base while strengthening our processing capabilities for existing customers and diversies our product portfolio,” says Pat Panko, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Ofcer for DFA’s Fluid Milk and Ice Cream Division.

Of the sale, Doug Simon, President of Agropur inc., stated, “DFA is a tremendous organization with strong cultural and business ideations that marry well with those of Agropur’s cooperative roots. Our focus has been and will always be meeting the needs of our customers and being strategic in our investments toward complementary growth areas. This transaction is well aligned with longterm strategic plans for both parties.”

The facility manufactures a variety of fresh, extended shelf-life and aseptic dairy products for well-known grocery store chains and organic milk brands. Employees will retain their current positions. In addition, the existing management team will continue to manage all day-to-day operations, including customer relationships, milk procurement and production. It is anticipated the transaction will close early in January.

East Central/Select Sires, NorthStar Cooperative sign intent to merge Two well-known and successful agricultural cooperatives in the upper Midwest have signed an intent to merge. The board of directors for East Central/Select Sires, based in Waupun, Wis., and NorthStar Cooperative, Lansing, Mich., reached a unanimous decision to work toward unifying the two business entities under the name CentralStar Cooperative Inc. Currently, NorthStar Cooperative serves dairy and beef producers in northern Wisconsin, Michigan, and north of U.S. Highway 50 in Indiana. East Central/Select Sires serves dairy and beef producers in southern Wisconsin. There is no overlapping territory between the two cooperatives, so once the merger is conrmed, service will continue as usual for patron members.

The goal is to combine cooperatives, creating even greater value for our members and customers. This includes taking advantage of economies of scale where it makes sense; expanding resources and services available to customers, such as Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) services and diagnostic testing; and removing the current business line in Wisconsin.

“The board is really excited about this potential merger,” said Paul Trierweiler, president, NorthStar Cooperative board of directors. “Collaborating in strategic alliances is one element of NorthStar’s vision, which guides us into discussions like this one. The dairy and beef industries are changing rapidly, and the board believes becoming one cooperative creates a lot of opportunities to better serve all members and customers.”

“Employees will see advantages, as well,” added Steve Abel, president, East Central/Select Sires board of directors. “By combining employee numbers from both cooperatives, we can use economies of scale in areas such as benets, insurance, and technology. There will be more opportunity for career development, and with expanded services, employees will benet from providing more value to customers.”

NorthStar Cooperative and East Central/Select Sires will follow their governing documents and conduct a vote of the common stockowners (NorthStar Cooperative) and delegates (East Central/Select Sires), to approve the merger. Voting will occur in early 2019.

Upon a positive vote, merging business operations will begin May 1. CentralStar will focus on enhancing producer protability through integrated services, providing Accelerated Genetics, GenerVations, and Select Sires genetics; extensive articial-insemination (A.I.) technician service; genetic consultation; reproduction services; DHI services; diagnostic testing; herdmanagement products; research and development; and more. All current business locations will remain open for the foreseeable future.

USDA lowers milk production estimates

The handwriting is on the milk house wall and the walls of USDA. The Agriculture Department again lowered its 2018 and 2019 milk production estimates in the latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report (WASDE), due to “slower growth in milk per cow and lower cow numbers. Relatively weak returns are expected to result in a smaller 2019 cow herd,” says the USDA. 2018 production and marketings were projected at 217.8 and 216.8 billion pounds respectively, down 100 million pounds from last month’s estimates. If realized, 2018 production would still be up 2.3 billion pounds or 1.1 percent from 2017.

2019 production and marketings were estimated at 220.6 and 219.6 billion pounds respectively, down 300 million pounds on both. If realized, 2019 production would be up 2.8 billion pounds or 1.3 percent from 2018.

Fat basis import forecasts were raised for 2018 and 2019, as strong domestic demand supports higher imports of butter. Fat basis export forecasts were raised for both years on higher sales of butteroil and anhydrous milk fat (AMF).

The 2018 skim-solids export forecast was raised on higher expected sales of skim milk/nonfat dry milk powder (SMP/NDM), but the 2019 export forecast was unchanged as higher SMP/NDM sales are offset by weaker exports of lactose.

The price forecast for cheese was lowered for 2018 on current price weakness and continued high stocks, but the forecasts for butter, NDM, and whey were unchanged. The 2019 cheese and butter price forecasts were reduced, while the NDM price forecast was unchanged. The 2019 whey price forecast was raised from last month as stocks remain relatively low.

The 2018 and 2019 Class III milk price forecasts were lowered from last month due to the lower cheese prices. The 2018 and 2019 Class IV milk prices were unchanged at the midpoint of the range.

Look for the 2018 Class III to average around $14.55 per cwt., down from $16.17 in 2017 and $14.87 in 2016. The 2019 average is at a range of $14.65-$15.45, down from the $15.15-$16.05 projected a month ago.

The 2018 Class IV price average is expected at around $14.20, down from $15.16 in 2017 and compares to $13.77 in 2016. The 2019 average is now put at a range of $14.40-$15.30 per cwt.

lower corn used for ethanol, reduced imports, and larger ending stocks. Imports were lowered based on observed trade to date. Corn used to produce ethanol was reduced 50 million bushels to 5.6 billion, based on the most recent data. The season-average corn price received by producers was unchanged at a midpoint of $3.60 per bushel but the range was narrowed 5 cents on each end to $3.25 to $3.95 per bushel.

Total U.S. oilseed production was forecast at 135.5 million tons, up slightly due to an increase for cottonseed. Soybean supply and use projections for 2018/19 were unchanged from last month. With soybean exports and crush unchanged, soybean ending stocks were projected at a record 955 million bushels.

The U.S. season average soybean price is forecast at $7.85 to $9.35 per bushel, unchanged at the midpoint. Soybean meal and oil price forecasts were also unchanged at $290 to $330 per short ton and 28-32 cents a pound, respectively. Global 2018/19 oilseed production was forecast at 600.5 million pounds, with greater production for Brazil and Nigeria.

FC Stone says there are reports that China bought 30 cargoes of soybeans. “While the news is welcome news to anybody with a bin full of soybeans, it will take much more to save this grain marketing year. The grain market is waking up to the idea that even with China buying, there’s a lot of soybeans around.”

This month’s cotton forecasts include slightly higher production and ending stocks. Production was raised 180,000 bales due mainly to a 300,000-bale increase in Texas. Domestic mill use and exports were unchanged. Ending stocks, forecast at 4.4 million bales, are 100,000 bales above both last month and the 2017/18 estimate. The forecast range for the marketing year average price received by producers was unchanged from November, 71 to 77 cents per pound, with a midpoint of 74 cents.

Dairy prices strengthened the second week of December as traders awaited the last GDT auction of 2018 on December 18, plus the December 19 November Milk Production report. Cheddar block cheese, after falling to the lowest CME level since May, 2016, rallied and closed Friday at $1.4075 per pound, up 5 3/4-cents on the week but 12 1/4-cents below a year ago. The barrels nished at $1.31, up 8 3/4-cents on the week, 35 cents below a year ago, and 9 3/4-cents below the blocks. 5 cars of block were sold on the week and 27 of barrel.

Class III. Some plant managers suggest production upticks will last until the last week of December, then drop off through January 1. Midwestern cheese inventories are generally heavy, but some managers relay that their stocks are intentionally “scant.” Cheese markets are far from healthy, says DMN. Cheese production is very active in the West with most facilities at full capacity or close to it. Inventories surpass demand but end of the year buying interest is stable to up a bit. The low price trends are enhancing sales but buyers are closely monitoring prices and limiting purchases as they have enough inventory.

The U.S. market tone is weaker, but remains competitive, according to DMN. Butter fell to $2.1750 per pound Thursday, lowest CME price since July 6, 2018, but closed Friday at $2.19, still 1 3/4-cents lower on the week and 5 1/2-cents below a year ago. Only 1 sale was reported for the week.

Churns have begun to run actively in the Central region, according to DMN. “As cream prices continue their seasonal declivity, butter plants are building stocks for the spring holiday demand push early in 2019.”

Western butter makers say retail orders are still coming in and while print sales normally trail off after Thanksgiving, so far, they have been relatively steady. Bulk butter buyers seem willing to make purchases for rst and second quarter needs as the market price eases. Inventories are shrinking along seasonal patterns.

Spot Grade A nonfat dry milk closed Friday at 94 cents per pound, up 5 1/2-cents and the highest CME price since June 1, 2017, and 28 1/4-cents above a year ago. 23 carloads found new homes on the week at the CME. Cash dry whey saw a Friday close at 45 cents per pound, up 1 1/4-cents on the week, with 4 sales reported for the week at the CME. The USDA’s latest Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Outlook shows overall milk use in October was higher than year-earlier levels but FC Stone dairy broker Dave Kurzawski stated in the December 17 Dairy Radio Now broadcast that the data speaks volumes to what has happened on the cheese futures and spot market.

American cheese demand was down 9.9 percent from a year ago, unusual for this time of year, he said, but up 2.5 percent from September. The problem is that we price milk on American cheese, though he believes that will turn around.

The good news is that demand for the “other” cheese category set a new record, topping 731 million pounds, up 6.7 percent from 2017 and up 7.4 percent from September. Total cheese use was down 0.1 percent from a year ago but 5.5 percent above September.

Thus far, 2018 American cheese use is up 1 percent and other than American cheese use is up 3.2 percent, putting total cheese use 2.3 percent higher.

Butter disappearance was up 9.5 percent from 2017, a record October volume, while nonfat dry milk use was down 9.8 percent; “so we’ll le those numbers under doesn’t really matter today,” he said.

“We have a market right now that is making three month highs on nonfat and three month lows on butter.” For the year we’re up 6.9 percent on nonfat and up 2.9 percent on butter, according to Kurzawski.

And, while negotiations continue between the U.S. and China to resolve their trade differences, shipments of milk powder, whey, lactose, cheese and butterfat to China were down 47 percent in October, while U.S. exports elsewhere were up 14 percent, with large gains in sales to Southeast Asia and Mexico.

On a total milk solids basis, U.S. exports were equivalent to 15.3 percent of U.S. milk production in October, bringing the year-to-date percentage to 16.3 percent.

The calendar year record is 15.4 percent in 2013.

In the four months since China put additional tariffs in place, U.S. whey exports to China were down 36 percent compared with a year ago, according to USDEC. SMP sales were down 54 percent, WMP sales were down 97 percent and cheese exports were down 56 percent. On a value basis, total dairy exports to China were down 36 percent in the July-October period.

Exports to Mexico and Southeast Asia were up 25 percent and 29 percent, respectively, however, in October (on a value basis) mostly on the strength of improved sales of nonfat dry milk/skim milk powder (NDM/SMP).

U.S. exports of NDM/SMP totaled 60,672 tons in October, a 19 percent increase versus a year ago. The 2018 total through 10 months, at 617,096 tons, has already established a new annual high, with two months to go.

Shipments to Mexico totaled 32,734 tons, up 37 percent, and remained heavy in October, while sales to Southeast Asia (a six-month high of 20,401 tons, mostly Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia) were up 39 percent. Sales to China, Peru, Pakistan, Japan and the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region were negligible, down more than 5,800 tons between them compared with a year ago.

U.S. suppliers also moved greater volumes of whole milk powder (WMP) to Southeast Asia. Total September exports hit 4,227 tons, up 124 percent, and nearly half went to Vietnam. Sales to China were just 38 tons, a fraction of what was shipped last year, but overall, U.S. WMP exports doubled this year.

Cheese exports totaled 26,931 tons and were on par with a year ago. Cheese to Mexico improved despite retaliatory tariffs, up 31 percent against a weak comparable. U.S. suppliers also saw slower sales to China, down 59 percent, as well as Japan, down 26 percent, and Australia, off 25 percent. The most notable gains were posted in sales to the MENA region, up 36 percent, and Southeast Asia, up 28 percent.

In politics, the Senate by a vote of 87 to 13 passed the $867 billion Conference Committee’s Farm Bill, the “2018 Agricultural Improvement Act.” The House followed, approving the measure 369 to 47. The passage drew praise from the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) and the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA). President Trump is expected to sign the ve year measure.

NMPF stated in its press release that the bill “includes much-needed reforms to help American dairy farmers.” President and CEO Jim Mulhern said the bill will benet U.S. agriculture and ensure safe, affordable food for Americans and the world. “A new law is especially important for dairy, a sector struggling with low prices and disrupted exports.”

The IDFA stated that the bill would “allow greater access to risk management tools for dairy foods companies and farmers to address price uctuations. The bill would also extend the Dairy Forward Pricing Program to 2023, improve the safety net for dairy farmers and create a new milk incentive program within the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to improve participants’ diets by increasing uid milk consumption.”

NMPF says “The Dairy Margin Coverage program (DMC) includes higher coverage levels from the Margin Protection Program (MPP) that address deciencies in the current feed-cost formula. It gives

greater exibility to allow producers of all sizes to access Tier 1 premium rates, expanded access to additional risk management tools, allowing producers to participate in both MPP and the Livestock Gross Margin insurance program, continued support for land and water conservation programs that assist producers, and has full funding for Farm Bill trade promotion programs, a crucial concern in an era of markets lost to tariffs and nutrition provisions intended to enhance consumption of uid milk.”

National Milk also praised the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for beginning the process of replacing the 2015 Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS) rule. NMPF says it was given an overview of the newly proposed WOTUS rule that will replace the 2015 version and said that as NMPF reviews the proposal, they are “highly condent it will improve upon the current rule, which has led to unnecessary legal fees, compliance costs and confusion for U.S. dairy producers.”

“Dairy farmers have a vested interest in the outcome of this rulemaking and its potential impact on their operations,” said NMPF’s Jim Mulhern. “We look forward to working with the EPA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to achieve the proper clarity that dairy farmers need on WOTUS.”

CME Group spot markets have stabilized with cheese and nonfat dry milk moving slightly higher. Heavy supplies continue to weigh on world markets with small snippets of hope beginning to show.

World milk production growth has slowed to near .8% above prior year levels, with U.S. milk production seeing the smallest year over year growth since 2013.

New Zealand production is expected to run 4.5% above prior year through the second quarter of 2019. Financial pain continues to restrict milk production expansion in Australia, South America, China, and the EU. World demand typically improves by 1.5-2% annually. At the current rate of production, demand is chewing into the oversupply situation at about .9% annually with the futures market predicting supply and demand will be back in balance by mid 2019.

The new farm bill, that could be signed into law by the time this is released, will provide more financial support for smaller dairy herds. MPP, which is now labeled DMC, will offer higher levels of margin protection at a relatively cheap cost on up to 5 million pounds of annual milk

production. With the new changes in government programs dairy producers milking 500-2,500 cows will now become the new high risk group, as herds above this size have better production cost efficiencies, and smaller herds benefiting from new government margin programs that nearly guarantee they will not lose money if they are cost competitive.

Grain markets found support on news that the U.S. and China have made commitments to a reprieve in the trade war. Initially, soybeans rallied sharply as analysts viewed news of more export business as positive. Soybean price strength could not hold as producers made sales when faced with the reality that carryout supplies could still end up above one billion bushels.

New Zealand dairy farmer grazes herd, lobbies for industry

FEILDING, North Island, New Zealand – What began as a simple land purchase not intended for agriculture use has turned into a full-edged pasture-based dairy farm with the farm’s owner being immersed in the dairy industry.

Andrew Hoggard and his wife, Audra, along with their daughters, Payton and Michaela, own the Matai Awa dairy farm near the town of Feilding on the North Island of New Zealand. Hoggard’s brother, Chad Hoggard, also owns a portion of the farm.

Hoggard milks 560 Holstein Friesians in a 44-stall rotary parlor; the cows are housed outside year-round.

In addition to the farm, Hoggard is the national vice president of Federated Farmers of New Zealand, an independent rural advocacy organization whose aim is to add value to farming for their members and encourage sustainability through sound management practices.

“My family has been farming since the 1930s,” Hoggard said. “My great-grandfather was a lawyer who was into hiking, and he was worried that the farmland that was opened up in front of his favorite forest park could be sold to someone who would block access. So, he brought it, and his oldest son, my grandfather, caught the farming bug.”

After nishing a degree in economics, Hoggard returned to the home farm for one year. The family sold the original farm site and purchased the current farm, where they have been operating for the last 20 years.

The Hoggards then purchased a neighboring farm, bringing their total acreage to 740 acres.

Hoggard said 75 percent of the cows freshen in the spring with the rest coming due in autumn. The farm’s pasture-based system is possible because of the area’s weather.

The average winter temperature is 54 degrees Fahrenheit; the summer average is 77 degrees. Hoggard said winter temperatures rarely dip below 46 and scarcely climb over 86 in the summer. The area receives an average yearly rainfall of 39 to 47 inches.

“We have had snow settle on the farm about four times in 20 years, so by and large the climate is ideal for pastoral farming,” Hoggard said.

As such, the cows’ diet is comprised largely of grass.

“During the spring ush, we will harvest surplus grass as silage for use generally in late summer for when it usually gets the driest and grass growth drops, and we need to supplement them,” Hoggard said. “We will grow [52 acres] a year of corn, which gets turned into silage and gets fed to the cows during late autumn, winter and early spring.”

Further surplus grass is made into hay and a meal supplement blend – palm kernel, soybean hull pellets,

dried distillers grain, biscuit meal, etc. – is purchased to feed in the parlor.

Area farmers produce potatoes, carrots, peas, onions, turnips, kale and beets.

“It is really good soil, and we could grow a range of things,” Hoggard said.

Hoggard has been able to balance his duties on the farm with that of Federated Farmers with the help of staff and family.

“Dairy farming has provided me and my family with an excellent life,” Hoggard said. “I do get some additional income from my role at Federated Farmers; however, that just covers the cost of additional staff to cover my absence from the farm. Truth be told, if I just stayed on the farm and focused on farming, I would be nancially better off, but I am passionate about my industry and view this as more of a service to the dairy industry and get a lot of satisfaction from doing the Turn to NEW ZEALAND | Page 15

For Hoggard, days begin at 3:20 a.m. with coffee and reading followed by a herd check at 4 a.m. Milking and clean-up is nished by 8. Breakfast and morning tasks follow.

“Three hours of tasks will be generally administrative stuff, Federated Farmers e-mails, urgent repairs that come up on the farm or farm improvement projects, unless I’m covering for a staff member in which case I’m doing their routine work,” Hoggard said. “…

Then it is afternoon milking again, usually done and dusted by 5:30-6 p.m., that is if I’m on the farm that day. Several days a week, I will potentially be at Federated Farmers meetings, so that involves waking up at the same time, and then driving three hours to Wellington and various meetings with government ofcials.”

Routine work on the farm includes feeding silage, depending on the time of year, putting up break fences, parlor maintenance and cleaning, weed spraying, pasture topping and miscellaneous tasks.

Milking requires two people; one to gather the cows while the other person sets up the parlor. While one person gathers the second group of cows, the other individual cleans the parlor.

“If needs be, I could do everything myself, but it wouldn’t be a very enjoyable day,” Hoggard said.

The parlor is equipped with automatic teat cup removal, automatic cow sorting, in-parlor feeding, automatic teat spray and yield sensing.

Hoggard said the Manawatu District in which he lives is home to around 300 dairy farms. In the wider region, there are 900 dairy farms. He said the area is teaming with industry professionals.

“We have a good selection of contractors in our area who can do cultivation and harvesting work, along with spraying contractors and fertilizer spreaders,” Hoggard said. “So rather than do these tasks myself, I use these

contractors. I can spend my days focusing on ensuring the cows are getting what they need. In Feilding, there are a range of rural support businesses, from rural supplies, to milk machine service agents, tractor dealerships, engineering workshops, vet clinic, livestock salesyard, stock transport rm. Basically, everything I could possibly need is a 15-minute drive from the farm.”

While the area’s dairy industry is bountiful, Hoggard said price volatility, societal expectations in regard to water quality and climate change regulations are particular challenges to the New Zealand dairy market.

“In my view, a lot of this volatility we experience is due to highly protected nature of dairy around the world,” Hoggard said. … “We don’t have subsidies or trade barriers to protect us. So, we are totally at the mercy of the market. This means you have to be a sound business person as well as a practical farmer.”

Hoggard plans to continue his advocacy role, stating he could be appointed the president of Federated Farmers, which could also mean further appointments on various boards.

“Then my time on the farm will be even more limited as thus I need good people and a good structure and systems in place to ensure everything runs well,” he said.

Beyond, Hoggard plans to install a robotic milking system and a covered feed pad as well as remote sensors.

No matter the industry appointment or the changing weather, Hoggard is thankful for his place in the dairy industry.

“The mix of practical and theory [in dairy] stimulates my brain, but also keeps me active,” he said. “And, I like that I can be exible with things, so if everything is done on the farm, I can just go inside and read a book on the sofa. It has provided me with great opportunities and a good life really. I had to work my backside off for it, but it has been worth it.”

More technology on the horizon

Stein presents about how machine learning, voice assistance will be widely used in the near future

WELCH, Minn. – As dairy progresses into the future, the use of technology will also increase on farms.

“We’ve had this proliferation of technology that didn’t exist even 20 years ago when I was working on software,” said Dr. Tom Stein from Maximus Systems.

Stein presented “What’s Ahead in the Technology World” Dec. 6 at the Vita Plus Dairy Summit 2018 in Welch, Minn.

“You guys in dairy are way ahead – DHIA data, sensors on cows, activity monitors. We don’t have any of that stuff in the swine or poultry industry,” said Stein, who has worked on creating software that tracks pigs.

He has also been working on software to manage farms with several sites and thousands of sows.

“That’s a different design challenge than building software for just one farm [site],” Stein said. “When you have these super organisms, you have to think dif-

ferently when designing the software to manage and track all that.”

Stein said this type of technology will likely be coming to dairy in the near future as farms get bigger. Stein is working on a system that is a single box to manage various activities on multiple farm sites. It takes data from sensors around the farm and sends it to the cloud every few seconds.

“This is a new approach to the controller,” he said.

As the size of farms shift, Stein anticipates the dairy industry to start adapting technology such as machine learning and voice assistance in the coming years.

“A lot of people call this articial intelligence. But that’s a buzz word,” Stein said about machine learning. “All this is, is taking human knowledge and translating it into something computers can do for us.”

As an example, Stein shared a story about a cucumber farmer he knew in Japan, who returned to the farm to help his parents. The most tedious task was sorting cucumbers into the categories rated for quality. He took 10,000 pictures of cucumbers and gave each one a designated category. He then fed the pictures through a Google program that came up with an algorithm that could sort the cucumbers based on the pictures he took.

The farmer made a simple machine

for the program to continue sorting. He would lie a computer down on glass, a camera would take a picture and the cucumber would move down a conveyer and be sorted into the correct bin after a paddle was activated by the software based on the picture.

“I want you to know machine learning, articial intelligence … it’s not a big scary thing and it’s not a generalized intelligence,” Stein said.

In the dairy industry, this type of technology could be used to detect mastitis or other health issues. A device would collect activity and rumination from the cow.

“As they put this technology in and collect more and more data from more and more dairy farms, the algorithm gets better and better driven by humans saying a cow is sick or not sick,” Stein said.

“This machine learning is like a database.

It’s an underlying technology that’s going to be embedded everywhere.”

The algorithms will predict, categorize or nd patterns in data, Stein said.

Voice assistance is another technology that is in the early stages in agriculture. It is already being used widely on a personal basis through Amazon Alexa and Google Home.

“They’re taking over and will probably be one of the biggest Christmas gifts this year,” Stein said.

Farmers would be able to use voicebased data entry while doing herd checks or while looking for insects in their elds, Stein said.

“The cool thing about this is that it provides for workow,” he said. “It would be automatically transcribed to a written report, but also one that is voice enabled to be able to listen back later.”

As machine learning and voice assistance grow, so will the use of automated systems such as robotic milkers, feed pushers, feed systems, automatic ventilation systems and even autonomous vehicle among other equipment activated by sensors.

This increased use of technology will require 5G cellular data service, Stein said.

“It will be rolling out in some places next year, but it has about three to four years to go,” Stein said. “It will mean new cell phones and a whole new network of cell towers required for 5G. It’s not faster data transition, but it’s more data moving through the pipe.”

Stein said the work is in place for this technology to arrive on more farms soon.

“It will make life easier and will help support day-to-day management on farms,” he said. “This is not crazy, not pie in the sky. It’s basically a lot of tedious work to get the prediction algorithms and voice based coming.”

Farms of the future will be larger, more integrated Jones presents how dairies will change in the years ahead

WELCH, Minn. – Dr. Gordie Jones gave a glimpse on how he sees the future of the dairy industry during his presentation Dec. 6 at the Vita Plus Dairy Summit 2018 in Welch, Minn.

“The U.S. dairy industry is undergoing a fundamental and rapid reorganization,” said Jones, who is a veterinarian, independent dairy performance consultant and partner at Central Sands Dairy LLC in Nekoosa, Wis. To understand how dairy got to where it is today, Jones looked backwards.

Cows were born during the last ice age, and the rst farmers were established nearly 7,000 years ago in what is modern-day Iraq, Jones said.

“They discovered the large headed grains,” he said. “We went from hunter gatherers to farmers.”

Farmers have only been able to domesticate about 15 species, Jones said.

“The cow is the star,” Jones said.

“As we came into Europe she became the tractor. She plowed the earth. She was our protein and fertilizer. So, she’s truly the foundation of civilization.

Cows are the reason we all exist.”

Over time, Jones said there have been four major forces shaping agriculture: the industrialization and consolidation of production, globalization of

markets, food safety and consumerism.

This has brought us to today’s dairy industry. Jones described the four types of dairy sectors. Sunset dairies are ones where the current owners are the last generation who will milk cows. Niche dairies use their dairy to market to a specic group of people. This includes organic farms or ones with onfarm creameries.

Lifestyle dairies are ones that consider dairying a way of life for their family.

“I used to call these the black Dr. Gordie Jones hole option where they would bring money back to the dairy and pour it down a black hole at times,” Jones said.

The last sector is large dairies.

Jones denes a large dairy as one that ships a semi load of milk every two days, which would be around 400 cows.

“Our cheese and milk processors have to be efcient just like we do, so suddenly they can’t send ve or six trucks out,” Jones said. “They’ll send one semi.”

Typically, a herd size doubles every 10 years so Jones said most farmers will double their herd size four times in their lifetime.

“In Wisconsin, the most expensive cow is the 701st cow,” Jones said.

“That’s the cow that brings you into [following regulations for being] a CAFO (conned animal feeding operation). That cow requires more manure storage, more regulation and everything

else. Somewhere in that 700-cow level we make a commitment to a different style of dairying.”

Today in the United States, there are under 40,000 dairy herds with 9.2 million cows. There are about 3,400 dairy herds above 500 cows. These herds produce 85 percent of the total milk in the nation.

Although there are people who want to reduce the number of cows in the world to reduce greenhouse gases, Jones said ruminant animals are important since they can graze and eat off the untillable land.

“Nobody’s talking about the cars we’re driving,” Jones said. “If cars were as efcient as dairy cows we would be getting 300 miles to the gallon. We’ve done a wonderful job. But ruminants still have a huge place on our planet.”

But Jones sees a shift in the location of dairies in the United States in the future, especially as temperatures have trended up for the last 40 years, he said.

“Water will be huge,” he said. “By 2067, the lack of water will drive dairy relocation to the Midwest. Dairies will shift from seven states that produce 42 percent of the milk today and will have to move to the Midwest because their water use demands are not sustainable.”

As Jones sees it, farms of the future will be bigger. He envisions a typical dairy to be a cluster of three milking sites totaling 3,500 cows each. These three sites will share a heifer, dry cow and transition management facility with more automation and articial intelligence.

“It will be a lateral integration of function,” Jones said. “Herds of the

future will have an understanding of super organisms as they keep getting bigger. Our herds will continue to get bigger and continue to get better.”

The industry will continue to do better at management, Jones said.

“I was told by Temple Grandin that A.I. companies have given us a cow we can’t manage,” Jones said. “I don’t believe that for a second.”

Because of better management, cows will produce more milk.

“Milk is the absence of stress,” Jones said. “As you remove stress from cows, she’s able to perform in her ability.”

Jones predicts by 2065, a typical rolling herd average will be 30,000 pounds with herds producing over 70,000 pounds of milk.

In the next 10 years, Jones foresees the nation’s cow numbers staying steady at 9.5 million, but the herd numbers will drop under 30,000 with 50 percent of the cows in the United States being in 4,000 herds.

“West of the Rockies will start to slow down with the competition for water and markets,” he said. “Growth will be expected in … Kansas all the way to Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.

As the industry consolidates into fewer and larger farms, contractual arrangements will play a bigger and bigger role in the industry.”

Whatever the size of a dairy, Jones said cow comfort will always play a big part of the success of a dairy.

“Cow comfort is universal,” he said. “It’s independent of size. It doesn’t matter whether you’re 40 cows or 4,000 cows. We can take better and better care of cows.”

WELCH, Minn. – The dairy market has been in a rough spot for the past few years because of increasing supply, shifting demand and tighter regulations.

Phil Plourd, of Blimling and Associates, shared his projections and expectations for the global dairy market during a presentation Nov. 28 at the Minnesota Milk Dairy Conference and Expo in Welch, Minn.

The presentation began optimistically, with Plourd sharing the positive points of dairy’s curPhil Plourd Bliming & Associates rent economic state.

“Global demographics are still in favor of the U.S. dairy producer,” Plourd said.

“The majority of global population is moving to urban areas and by 2050, 68 percent of the world population will live in urban areas.”

Evolving tastes and generally wealthier consumers mean more people demanding dairy products.

“We are well-positioned to serve the growing population,” Plourd said.

Based on his research, the global population is still favorable with milk consumption, and the U.S. economy is on an upturn as well. Job openings are increasing, while unemployment is decreasing.

“Right now, we have more jobs available than people to ll them,” Plourd said. “More people working means more money for them to spend on our products.”

There is a strong global cheese demand, and Europe is vulnerable concerning milk production after an unseasonably dry summer and fall.

“U.S. dairy farmers’ productivity is great,” he said. “It’s actually remarkable.”

Production is up 131 percent on 9 percent fewer acres using 8 percent fewer cows. However, the consumption of dairy in the United States is not keeping up with production, creating excess product.

“We need to be exporting more and more every day,” Plourd said. “We just don’t have that demand in America right now to keep up.”

Projections for the dairy market put the United States about 1.5 percent above 2018 levels in 2019.

While that may not seem like much, it is an improvement.

“We know we’re at the bottom now,” Plourd said. “Which is encouraging, we know it can’t get worse. Now it’s just a matter of how long it is going to last.”

In addition to an abundant supply and low demand, dairy marketers are facing more and more outside competition driven by ever-evolving consumer tastes.

“There has been a major change in consumer attitudes and demographics,” Plourd said. “Fewer people are buying their food in stores, and fewer people are going out to eat, rather everything is being delivered to their door. Gone are the days of impulse buying.”

With Amazon leading the trend by buying Whole Foods in 2017, and Walmart following with investing in more Internet sale possibilities, increasing companies are adapting to a convenience-driven consumer.

“Think about curbside pick-ups, delivery companies and online shopping,” Plourd said. “These are all examples of an evolving consumer.”

Another consideration is lab-grown beef and milk.

“Watch the companies that are investing in these ideas,” Plourd said. “Tyson and Cargill invested in lab-grown meat. Archer Daniels Midland invested in Perfect Day (lab-made milk).”

This is the competition facing the dairy industry today. Companies are making calculated decisions, and dairy farmers need to keep up, Plourd said.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a small bowl, mix cream cheese and 1 teaspoon basil until blended; spread onto six bread slices. Top with mozzarella cheese and remaining bread. Spread outsides of sandwiches with butter.

Arrange in a greased 13x9-in. baking dish.

In a small saucepan, combine tomato paste, garlic, salt, pepper and remaining basil; cook and stir over medium heat 1 minute. Gradually whisk in milk; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, 4-5 minutes or until thickened, stirring frequently. Remove from heat.

Whisk eggs in a large bowl; gradually whisk in a third of the milk mixture.

Stir in remaining milk mixture; pour over sandwiches. Sprinkle with Italian cheese blend.

Bake, uncovered, 25-30 minutes or until golden brown and cheese is melted.

Let stand 10 minutes before serving.

Cheddar Chicken Potpie CRUST: 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 5 tablespoons cold butter, cubed 3 tablespoons cold water FILLING: 1-1/2 cups chicken broth 2 cups peeled cubed potatoes 1 cup sliced carrots

For crust, in a small bowl, combine flour and salt. Cut butter in flour until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add the water, mixing gently with a fork. Gather into a ball. Cover and chill at least 30 minutes.

For filling, place broth in a Dutch oven; bring to a boil over high heat. Add vegetables. Reduce heat; simmer until vegetables are tender, 10-15 minutes.

In a small bowl, combine flour and milk; stir into broth mixture. Cook and stir over medium heat until slightly thickened and bubbly. Stir in cheese, chicken, poultry seasoning, salt and pepper. Heat until cheese melts. Spoon into a 10in. cast-iron or other ovenproof skillet. Set aside.

On a lightly floured surface, roll dough for crust to fit top of casserole, trimming edges as necessary. Place on casserole over filling; seal edges. Make several slits in center of crust for steam to escape.

Bake at 425 degrees until golden brown, about 40 minutes.
