Bovines star on Lands’ End catalogs

DODGEVILLE, Wis. – Most dairy farmers can probably think of a cow or two residing in their barn who thinks they are a superstar, but not many dairy farmers can say they have a pair of supermodel cover girls living in their barn. However, the Brown family of Dodgeville can say exactly that. Angela, Danielle and Sean Brown operate Ma-Brown Farm which is home to 30 head of registered Holsteins, Jerseys and Milking Shorthorns, and is located just west of Dodgeville in Iowa County. The family is active in showing all three breeds and they work together to operate their small dairy farm, while all holding offfarm jobs. Angela has spent the past 35 years working full time at Lands’ End, a clothing and home décor retailer located in Dodgeville. That career connection led to members of the Brown’s Holstein herd becoming two-time cover girls on the Lands’ End holiday book. “A few years ago, we took a cow for a photo shoot; how-

ever, those pictures didn’t end up being used,” Angela said. “Last year, I was approached about bringing a cow for a photo shoot again.” Ma-Brown Atwood Plum was the chosen cow, a cow they had shown and know to be even-tempered. “We knew there was going to be a lot going on at the photo shoot, and we wanted to make sure that the cow we took represented the dairy industry well,” Danielle said. Plum’s rst brush with fame took place at a photo shoot done at an old farmstead with rock buildings. When the time came, Plum was loaded on the trailer and hauled to the farmstead to make her modeling debut. “Plum behaved very well for the shoot,” Angela said. “The models and photo shoot staff enjoyed working with her.” Those rst pictures of Plum landed her on the cover of the 2018 holiday book and were featured on the company’s website. “In those photos she was looking over a fence that had the famous Lands’ End embroidered stockings hanging

Plum made an impact on the company and their customers, and an invitation was extended for her to make a return appearance. “In the spring of 2019, I received an email asking if Plum would be available for another photo shoot this year,” Angela said. “They also asked if Plum had a baby calf that we could bring with. She didn’t, but I told them we could nd a calf to bring along.”

Plum’s 2019 brush with fame included two days of photo shoots at another location near the Brown family’s farm. “The rst day, Plum went by herself, and she was photographed with a family that was dressed in the new peeking cow pajamas that Lands’ End has,” Angela said. “In those photos, she was looking over a half-door with a Santa hat on. Again, she behaved very well.” The second day of photos

Since the photo shoot, Firebird has become a bit spoiled, and she ended up being a nice calf for a family

Plum and Firebird have become ambassadors for the dairy industry through their appearances in the Lands’ End catalogs and social media posts. The Browns said the photo shoot staff and the models enjoyed their time working with the well-behaved bovines. “There were some members of the photo crew that remembered Plum this year from the year before,” Angela said. “They were excited to take seles and photos with her to share with their friends and families.” The Browns said they have enjoyed the exposure their cows have gotten and the positive attention the cows have brought to the dairy industry. “It is really fun to see your cows, cows that your family has raised from birth, on the cover of an international retail company’s catalog,” Angela said. “Also seeing comments from people saying they enjoy seeing the cows.” The Browns said they have all received messages from friends across the country that saw both magazine covers and purchased the pajamas because they know the owners of the animals.

Successful farm succession planning relies on communication

According to Kirkpatrick, a 2013 United States Department of Agriculture Agricultural Resource Management Survey showed that 29% of farms had succession plans in place. A 2009 study done by Iowa Farmers Business and Transfer Plans found that 27% of farms in the state of Iowa had identied a successor, and 75% of Iowa farmers surveyed said they would either never retire or semi-retire. “It depends on what they mean by semi-retire, what that means for the successor generation,” Kirkpatrick said. “Does it mean they will work for that successor generation

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. – Succession planning is not always an easy topic for dairy farm families to talk about, but it is a necessary conversation that needs to happen when the plan is for the farm to transfer hands, according to Joy Kirkpatrick, a farm succession outreach specialist with the University of Wisconsin’s Center for Dairy Protability. Kirkpatrick spoke about starting that conversation at Compeer Financial’s Resilient Farms Conference Dec. 12 in Wisconsin Dells. “Most people, when they hear the term farm succession, think of a generational transition from one generation to the next,” Kirkpatrick said. “Land, cattle, machinery get transferred; maybe some money as well. But, a lot of times people forget the transfer of knowledge. You need to make sure that the successor

She said United States farm real estate nearly doubled in value between 2004 and 2014, and reached record levels in 2015. “But, how do they get that value out of their farmland?” Kirkpatrick said. “One is to sell it at full market value which doesn’t cash ow so well for beginning farmers at this particular moment. Or, they borrow against their equity and try to make sure that whatever enterprise they are putting that borrowed money in is making them some money that they can set aside.” When beginning to discuss farm succession plans, Kirkpatrick said she begins by talking to the families about their farm assets such as the farmland, cattle and machinery; and asking them what their goals are for using those assets, which are typically to be used as retirement assets, business assets and inheritance assets. Kirkpatrick said she approaches families to consider if their assets are large enough to be retirement, inheritance and business assets. “Can you retire the way you want to you?” she said. “Can that business stay intact for that next generation who you may have already kind of promised the farm to? If that successor has already been a part of that business for a while, they have some

expectations. If you have off-farm children, can it also be an inheritance asset for them? Those are the questions that you have to consider.” Kirkpatrick said there are ve common tensions in farm succession talks among family members including concerns about decision making and letting go versus retaining control; considering what is fair versus what is equal, which deals with the inheritance piece of the puzzle; prot versus affordability, which involves the increased value of the farm land; and considering progress versus continuity. Kirkpatrick asks families to determine the answers to three questions: Where is the farm now? Where do you want the farm to be? How do you intend to get there? Having an open discussion can help families determine the answers

to those questions. “One of the best things I can bring to the table when I’m working with a farm family is that I’m not related to anyone at the table,” Kirkpatrick said. “I’m going to ask the hard questions that need to be asked but might be uncomfortable for others to ask.” One of the biggest causes of failure to develop a farm succession plan is a lack of communication between generations and partners. Kirkpatrick said one of the most important things to consider when planning the rst meeting is the location. “Don’t have a succession plan conversation where there are places of power,” Kirkpatrick said. “I always encourage people to think about a neutral location that is comfortable for everyone.” Another reason for taking succession planning meetings off the farm to a neutral location is to remove the daily happenings on the farm from the area of the discussion. “When you meet on the farm, you can see everything that is happening on the farm out the kitchen window. You get distracted and maybe a conversation might be hurried because you see the things that need to be taken care of,” Kirkpatrick said. “Take some time and be away from the farm for a bit and really focus on this conversation that is really important to have.” Having regularly occurring meetings and an agenda is something Kirkpatrick encourages to help keep meetings on track and ensure everything is covered. She also suggests each person be prepared to share something that has gone well since the last meeting. “If you only talk about the problems or things that have gone wrong, how often do you think you will keep having these meetings with only discussions about the bad stuff?” Kirkpatrick said. “You need to make sure you remember the things that have gone right.”

Get to know Brandon Przybilla, of Pierz, Minnesota

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I have been involved with FFA for ve years. I have been the president of our chapter the past two years and was the treasurer the year before that. Why are you involved in these activities/organizations, and what is your favorite? I enjoy learning new things about farming whether it be crops or cattle. I also enjoy making new friends through events especially when traveling to the state convention. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. I really enjoyed attending SLCCL, a leadership camp for FFA students before the school year started. What is your favorite social media? Snapchat. Our family enjoys having a group chat to share where and what we are doing around on the farm. I also enjoy being a part of farming pages on Facebook. What are your career aspirations? I am undecided of where I want to be after graduation, but I hope to continue crop farming with my dad. What is something you have learned from being involved in these activities/ organizations? How important organization skills are to pulling off different events, such as our annual parade oat and selling fruit as a fundraiser. Who do you look up to? I look up to my grandpa who recently passed away. He always had an answer when it came to farming and the best stories to share even if you had already heard it 10 times. Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. I enjoy bowling in my spare time with family. Tell us some of your duties on the farm. Some of my duties include milking and feeding cows on our west farm, while also helping my dad with crop farming and with youngstock chores on our home farm when my sister is home from college to help milk. If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? I wish people who don’t farm would be able to understand what farming truly is and the struggles that come with it. Education and changing the media’s outlook is important to changing this.
