Spreading Christmas cheer
Mickelsons enjoy lighting up their farm By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com
BLACK EARTH, Wis. – A desire to bring a smile and good cheer to the faces of their neighbors during the Christmas season is the reason Craig and Jane Mickelson and their family don their farm in a variety of lights. Mickelson Dairy Farm is nestled in the rolling hills of southern Wisconsin near Black Earth and is operated
by Craig and Jane Mickelson, their daughter, Sara Amble, and their granddaughter, Ashley Rickey. They milk about 100 head of Holsteins, Jerseys and Brown Swiss on their 300-acre Dane County farm. “We have always done a little bit of decorating on the farm for at least 20 years or so, but about ve or six years ago, we really expanded what we have done, and it just seems to grow a little each year,” Craig said. ing efforts have grown so has the notoriety their farm has gained from their light display. “You see people drive by slowly and then turn around up the road and drive by again, looking at the lights,” Sara said. “It lets you know that other people appreciate the effort you have put into

putting the lights up.” Sara said her son writes for a local newspaper and wrote a column about how the farm comes alive with the lights. “Since he wrote that in the paper, we have heard from lots of people that they can’t wait to come see the lights,” Sara said. “Kids

with the weather. “When we rst started, the weather was nice in the fall,” Craig said. “The last few years the falls haven’t been as nice.” The poor weather caused the Mickelson family to take a year off from their decorating efforts in 2018. “It was so wet, and between the weather and the markets everything was just depressing so we said forget it,” Sara said. “This year, things have just been bad for so long, I needed something to make me smile so I decided I wanted to see the farm all lit up again.” Jane said some years it is not easy to add new lights or things to their display because of farm nances. “We try not to buy too much any one year,” Jane said. “When things are good, we might buy a little extra and put a little more up. When they aren’t good, we just stick with what we have.” The Mickelsons leave most of the lights up around the farm structures each year and begin their decorating season by plugging everything in to see what works. “We try and replace any lights that don’t work,” Craig said. Sara spearheads much of the decorating. She said she sees an idea somewhere and wonders how she can modify it to t her family’s farm. The Mickelsons said they rst started with lights on the front of the barn and then eventually added lights on the higher peaks of the barn

and on the freestall barn. The family has received help from a neighbor who had a cherry-picker to help them put the lights on the highest peaks of the barn. “He’s passed away now, so I’m not sure what we’ll do when those lights need replacing,” Sara said. … “I’ve seen people decorate their silos, so

I decided to make the ladders on the Harvestores into candy canes. I don’t have a fear of heights, but it sure was a lot of trips up and down.” Another item the Mickelsons light up on their farm is a Steel Cow portrait they have hanging on the barn, which they have adorned with Christmas lights and even added a Santa hat to. One year, Sara said they purchased large bows to tie on the white fence with the lights. “It looked beautiful. The bows were big enough to be seen from the road,” Sara said. “But, it was a disaster. … The cows pulled them all off. We found pieces of bows everywhere. We spent a lot of money on those bows and the cows ate them all.”

The family’s dogs sometimes provide a challenge when it comes to the decorations. “We had candy canes lining the steps up to the front door of the house one year,” Craig said. “The dogs had a eld day with them. They pulled them out of the ground and carried them all over.” The Mickelsons do not necessarily subscribe to a certain color scheme, but they use all white lights on the farm buildings and fences. Jane said she likes the red, green and blue lights, and adds those around the house. “It just makes me feel good to see the farm all lit up. It looks so nice,” Sara said. “It gives you something to enjoy when it gets dark so early this time of year, and it makes me feel good to see others enjoy it as much as I do.”

These resources are reviewed by an expert advisory group consisting of farmers and ranchers, veterinarians and animal scientists who meet quarterly to evaluate the program, discuss trending topics, review the latest research and make recommended changes or updates, as needed. Consumers will soon learn about the steps beef farmers and ranchers take to care for their animals and to produce high quality beef in a new promotion and advertising campaign about the Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) program. BQA trains farmers and ranchers on best practices and cattle management techniques to ensure their animals and the environment are cared for within a standard set of guidelines. The program began 30 years ago, and today more than 85 percent of beef produced in the U.S. comes from a farmer or rancher who has been BQA certied. The formally producer-facing BQA program, will now be introduced to consumers via a campaign designed to meet their desire to learn more about how beef is produced. The integrated marketing and communication campaign includes a new video from Beef. It’s What’s for Dinner. bringing the BQA program to life by highlighting how cattle farmers and ranchers across the country raise cattle under BQA guidelines. Early registration offers discounts to MOSES Organic Farming Conference Early registration just opened for the country’s largest conference about organic and sustainable agriculture. The 31st Annual MOSES Organic Farming Conference takes place Feb. 27-29, 2020, in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The event brings together farmers, researchers, and agriculture professionals to learn the latest organic production practices and build a supportive community of resilient organic, sustainable, and regenerative farms. The conference, organized by the Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service (MOSES), features 60 workshops over six sessions, 10 full-day classes, a two-oor trade show, organic meals, and round-table discussions plus more opportunities to network. Nearly 3,000 people are expected at the conference. Emily Fowell, a farmer from Westby, Wisconsin, who has been to the MOSES Conference the last three years, has found it to be “absolutely packed with useful and applicable information from beginning to end. There are so many things I can take right back to the farm!” Tim Daley, an agronomist with Stonebridge LTD, has attended the conference 23 years running. Minnesota Organic Conference coming in early January
Registration is now open for the Minnesota Organic Conference, taking place Jan. 9-10, at the River’s Edge Convention Center in St. Cloud. The keynote speakers for this year’s conference are author Judith D. Schwartz and fourth-generation farmer Charlie Johnson. Schwartz is an author and journalist whose work explores nature-based solutions to environmental and economic challenges. Her books include Water in Plain Sight: Hope for a Thirsty World, and Cows Save the Planet and Other Improbable Ways of Restoring Soil to Heal the Earth. The latter book was awarded a Nautilus Book Award Silver Prize for Sustainability. She will deliver her keynote address, “Why Soil Matters for Your Farm and Beyond,” on Jan. 9. Johnson runs a 2,500-acre farm near Madison, S.D. in partnership with his two brothers that has been organic since 1976. They raise oats, soybeans, corn and alfalfa, and maintain a 200-head cow-calf operation. In 2013, the Midwest Organic & Sustainable Education Service (MOSES) recognized him as their Organic Farmer of the Year, and he currently sits on the MOSES Board of Directors. He will deliver his keynote address, “Whisper from the Prairie – A Generational Legacy,” on Jan. 10. The early bird registration period ends on Dec. 27, 2019. The Agriculture Department left unchanged its milk production forecasts for 2019 and 2020 in the latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates. 2019 milk production remains estimated at 218.6 billion pounds while 2019 marketings was raised 100 million pounds from last month’s report. If realized, 2019 production would be up 1 billion pounds or 0.5% from 2018. 2020 production and marketings remain estimated at 222.4 and 221.4 billion pounds respectively. If realized, 2020 production would be up 3.8 billion pounds or 1.7% from 2019. Cheese and butter price forecasts for 2019 were lowered, the nonfat dry milk (NDM) price was raised, and the whey price was unchanged. The 2020 butter price forecast was reduced on continued demand softness, but cheese prices were forecast slightly higher on stronger demand. NDM and whey prices were raised, supported by higher expected export demand. The 2019 Class III milk price forecast was lowered due to an expected weaker cheese price. The 2019 average was projected at $16.95 per hundredweight (cwt.), down a nickel from last month’s estimate and compares to 2018’s average at $14.61 and $16.17 in 2017. The 2020 average was raised 15 cents to $17.65. The Class IV price was unchanged from last month as the lower butter price was offset by a higher NDM price. Look for the Class IV to average $16.30 in 2019, up from the 2018 average of $14.23 and $15.16 in 2017. The 2020 Class IV average was raised a dollar to $16.95. The increased 2020 Class III and IV prices are due to gains in most product prices with the exception of butter. This month’s 2019/20 US corn supply and use outlook was unchanged from last month. The projected season-average farm price was unchanged at $3.85 per bushel. Global coarse grain production for 2019/20 was forecast 6.8 million tons higher to 1.4 billion. The 2019/20 foreign coarse grain outlook is for larger production, increased consumption, and higher stocks relative to last month. Foreign corn production was forecast higher with increases for China and Bolivia more than offsetting a reduction for Canada, according to the USDA. U.S. oilseed production was forecast at 107.6 million tons, down slightly due to a decrease for cottonseed. Soybean supply and use projections were
unchanged from last month. The U.S. season-average soybean price for 2019/20 was forecast at $8.85 per bushel, down 15 cents. The soybean meal price forecast was reduced $15.00 to $310.00 per short ton. The soybean oil price forecast was unchanged at 31.0 cents per pound. Global oilseed production was forecast up 3.3 million tons to 574.6 million, with greater soybean, sunďƒ&#x;ower seed, and peanut production partly offset with lower rapeseed and cottonseed forecasts. China’s soybean production projection was raised 1.0 million tons to 18.1 million reďƒ&#x;ecting higher area and yield. The month’s U.S. cotton outlook included lower production and ending stocks compared with last month. Production was lowered 611,000 bales mainly due to a 500,000-bale decline in Texas. Domestic mill use and exports are unchanged. The Daily Dairy Report stated that USDA did not survey farmers this month so it did not adjust its crop production outlook and reported that more than 1 billion bushels of corn are still in the ďƒželd, “exposed to the elements and vulnerable to quality issues, including harmful fungi.â€? Things sounded promising on Capitol Hill this week as U.S. Dairy Export Council President and CEO Tom Vilsack praised an announcement that the White House and Congress reached a deal on the USMexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). “Washington worked hard to make USMCA an even better deal for America’s dairy farmers and exporters,â€? Vilsack said in a joint press release with the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF). “Now we are counting on Congress to move expeditiously to pass USMCA.â€? A House vote could come the week of December 16 with a Senate vote hopefully before year end. “USMCA makes important changes to Canada’s trade-distorting policies, reforms Canada’s controversial dairy pricing system and provides exclusive access to the Canadian market for U.S. farmers and manufacturers. It also strengthens the U.S. dairy industry’s relationship with Mexico and establishes new protections for common cheese names, using a combination of approaches to protect the continued use of a number of generic cheese terms such as parmesan and feta.â€? “Important advancements made during negotiations between lawmakers and the White House included an enhanced Dispute Settlement process for enforcing the agreement’s measures,â€? the press re-

Tweets from President Trump this week indicated that the on again, off again Phase One agreement between the US and China was back on and would result in China purchasing $50 billion in US agricultural products, including soybeans and pork shipments. President Trump was also expected to sign an implementing proclamation this week of the US-Japan trade deal, meanwhile the aftermath remains to be seen of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s huge electoral victory this week and his promise to take his country out of the European Union. National Milk commended the House of Representative for passage of the Farm Workforce Modernization Act. “The bill, the ďƒžrst House-passed agricultural labor reform since a comprehensive immigration plan in 1986, includes critical provisions to address dairy’s unique workforce needs,â€? says NMPF CEO Jim Mulhern, and “helps address dairy’s unique workforce challenges. Agricultural labor reform is long overdue. With today’s action it is now imperative the Senate act to fully address the needs of dairy farmers and all of agriculture, helping dairy farmers do what they do best: feed our nation and the world.â€? NMPF also praised the conďƒžrmation of Dr. Stephen Hahn as FDA commissioner, calling on him to “provide strong leadership to address the issue of mislabeled plant-based products inappropriately marketed using dairy terms.â€? Last, the Northeast Dairy Farmers Cooperatives newsletter reports that Congressional leadership has agreed “in principleâ€? to all 12 federal appropriations bills including agriculture for FY2020 and “would mean no more Continuing Resolutions.â€? The crash you heard this week were cheese prices at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, particularly the barrels, which closed Friday the 13th at $1.6950 per pound, down a whopping 53.25 cents on the week, lowest since September 30, but still 38.5 cents above a year ago. The hemorrhaging leaked onto the blocks which ďƒžnished at $1.7975, down 17.25 cents and 39 cents above a year ago. The spread is at 10.25 cents below the blocks. 20 cars of barrel sold on the week and 4 of block. Dairy Market News reports that central cheese sales are steadying and warned that demand, in some cases, is falling behind stronger production and growing supplies. Milk is readily available and a number of cheesemakers are foregoing the spot milk market because they are at capacity. Producers are hopeful the football playoff season will keep buyers busy. Milk production is higher in the region and cheese market tones are on “shaky ground,â€? says DMN, but barrel producers report the price declines may be some enticement for buyers, whom have been reticent with the $2 pus price. Western cheese intakes are stable for retailers and food service. Export demands are at seasonal levels. Buyers have been getting only what they need the past few weeks however, DMN says, if the declines in prices are sustained, cheese sales are likely to become more active. Production continues to increase ahead of the holidays as milk supplies are plentiful in the west. Butter saw its rst positive move since November 18 this week, closing at $1.96 per pound, up 4.5 cents on the week but 23 cents below a year ago, on 7 sales. Butter producers report plentiful cream. Butter orders have already been placed to fulll holiday needs but current demand is meeting expectations. Contacts expect to see retail promotions increase ahead of the winter holidays. Some contacts expect butter prices to level off and nd some steadiness while the more bearish expect prices in the $1.80 area. Western butter makers say, with ample amounts of affordable cream, they are running their churns hard. Retail orders are strong as buyers try to get shelves restocked ahead of the holidays and bulk buyers continue to make inquiries for early 2020 needs. Butter makers have seen inventory values fall with the declining prices and while stocks are adequate, they question the right amount to have on hand, says DMN. CME nonfat dry milk saw some ups and downs but closed Friday at $1.2650 per pound, up a quartercent and 32.5 cents above a year ago. 3 cars traded hands. Spot dry whey saw a Friday price at 33.75 cents per pound, down 3 cents and 11.25 cents below a year ago, with 19 cars nding new homes on the week. The USDA’s latest dairy product commercial disappearance data helps explain recent prices, according to Matt Gould, analyst and editor of the Dairy and Food Market Analyst newsletter. Speaking in the December 16 Dairy Radio Now broadcast, Gould reported that October butter prices topped the rest of the world but domestic consumption was up 4.1% in October, up 3.1% in August, and up 6.7% in September. American type cheese consumption hovered between 1.5 to 1.6% in a three month rolling average, he said, so domestic growth was solid however, “The problem is exports.” American type cheese exports were down nearly 10% in the three months ending in October, and Gould blamed the on-going trade war. Nonfat dry milk exports were struggling, he said, but that was made up for by domestic use, which was up 18.3% and exports were up almost 17% in October. HighGround Dairy (HGD) adds that total October cheese disappearance marked the strongest monthly disappearance in history “and demand continued up versus prior year for the second consecutive month.” Butter disappearance topped that of a year ago for the third consecutive month and moved toward seasonal highs, marking the strongest October on record, according to HGD, and the same was true for nonfat dry milk, with both export and domestic demand
pushing total disappearance higher. Unfortunately the positive data didn’t hold true on uid milk. October sales totaled 4.0 billion pounds, according to DMN, down 2.1% from October 2018. Conventional product sales totaled 3.8 billion pounds, down 2.2% from a year ago. Organic products, at 230 million pounds, were up 0.9% and represented 5.7% of total sales for the month. Whole milk sales totaled 1.3 billion pounds, up 0.4% from a year ago and made up 32% of total uid sales in the month. Sales for the 10 month period totaled 12.5 billion pounds, up 0.9% from a year ago. Skim milk sales, at 276 million pounds, were down 11.8% and made up 6.8% of total milk sales for the month. Total packaged uid milk sales, January through October totaled 38.2 billion pounds, down 1.8% from a year ago. Conventional products year-to-date totaled 36.1 billion pounds, down 1.7%. Organic products, at 2.1 billion pounds, were down 2.2% and represented about 5.5% of total uid milk sales for the period. The gures represent consumption of uid milk products in Federal milk order marketing areas and California, which account for approximately 92% of total uid milk sales in the U.S. Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) member cooperatives accepted nine offers of export assistance this week to help capture sales of 196,211 pounds of Cheddar and Gouda cheese, 330,693 pounds of whole milk powder and 149,914 pounds of cream cheese. The product is going to customers in Asia, Central
and South America through April 2020. National Milk announced that it has reached a settlement to end a class-action lawsuit concerning its herd retirement program that ended in 2010 and was administered through its Cooperatives Working Together initiative. A NMPF press release stated that “The settlement will safeguard ongoing efforts to aid U.S. dairy producers, lift a years-long legal cloud and allow NMPF members and the current CWT program to move forward with greater legal and scal certainty.” The plaintiffs, who are generally larger retailers and companies who directly purchased butter and cheese from CWT member cooperatives, have agreed to a settlement of $220 million in exchange for a release from all claims. Based on antitrust rules that mandate a tripling of any damages, that amount is less than 6% of the damages sought by the plaintiffs. Neither NMPF nor any of its member cooperatives admit any wrongdoing as a result of this settlement. “There is no way to sugarcoat a settlement of this size, especially given that the Herd Retirement Program was a well-publicized effort designed to serve dairy producers in difcult times and was praised by two Secretaries of Agriculture as well as leading members of Congress,” said NMPF CEO Jim Mulhern. “Given the potential damages and the uncertainties surrounding any jury trial, resolving this case eliminates the possibility of a truly crippling outcome. Lifting this cloud will aid us in our work advancing the well-being of U.S. dairy producers, which includes the current robust CWT export assistance program.”

HELPING GOOD MANAGERS MAKE BETTER TRADING DECISIONS Thanks to my farming background I tend to be an early riser. This morning as I was sitting in the dark quiet living room enjoying our Christmas tree lights, I was overwhelmed by a feeling of Christmas peace. The thought of a baby being born that would one day give his life to become the savior of the world became overwhelming to me. I couldn’t help but wonder how those that don’t know Christ find true peace. It is this peace that allows me to find a place of rest after facing difficult days. One of my favorite bible verses is Philippians 4:7 where it describes a peace that surpasses all understanding. As 2019 comes to an end, all of us at DairyVisor hope that each of you are able to find times of peaceful rest in 2020. CME Group spot barrel cheese prices saw the biggest one week decline since the markets inception. The week ending December 6 barrel cheddar settled at $2.228. The following week the last trade was $1.695. This is a 53.3 cent price decline. So what caused this big price drop? There were reports floating around about a large U.S. cheese export contract that ended and was renewed with EU product due to more favorable pricing. Dairy Market News has been stating that most in the industry have been expecting prices to
see some downward pressure to entice buyers to return to the market. Most feel that the block and barrel price spreads have returned to a more healthy posture based on fundamentals as Cheddar blocks are once again the price drivers trading at a 10 cent premium to barrels. A key market indicator for milk price direction is the value that spot loads of milk between plants trade at to balance production. After trading at premium to Class over the past months, spot loads are now trading par to minus $2. Through the holidays it is likely that there will be plenty of discounted excess loads available to manufacturers. The powder markets continue to firm as nonfat dry milk demand remains strong relative to world supply. NFDM futures are trading $1.25-1.31 and whey 36-44 cents for the next 12 months. Although 2020 may bring its own unique challenges, the year will start off brighter for dairy profitability.

GREENWALD, Minn. – Alfalfa is a long-standing feed option for dairy cows. At the third stop of the Tour de Forage event, Dr. Dan Undersander spoke of new ways to consider managing this commonly used forage for the best results in the eld and in the diet. “When we’re looking at our alfalfa, we have to think how it will last for the life of the stand,” Undersander said. Undersander, professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin, presented “New Ideas for Your Alfalfa Management” at the forage event Dec. 5 in Greenwald. Among the topics the keynote speaker broached, he honed in on two that inuence many forage producers in the Upper Midwest: plant diseases and low-lignin alfalfa. Most recently, traces of aphanomyces fungus have been present in elds in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The disease risks the survival of alfalfa plant seedlings and kills the plant itself by pruning the root system. This does not allow the plant to take up nutrients.
“This is something we should really be paying attention to,” Undersander said. “I’m willing to bet it’s been in every one of your elds.” Plants stressed by the fungus are often found on slopes in wet conditions. The infected forage looks yellow in color and is stunted when compared to the rest of the eld. The disease is particularly concerning to Undersander because of its variability. Aphanomyces is known to have multiple races. “In my 47 years of working with alfalfa, we have the same mosaic virus resistance … most don’t change,” he said. “This disease has been different than any other disease of alfalfa. We’re now on race 3 resistance (of aphanomyces); think about that.” To combat the effects of this disease, Undersander suggested using alfalfa seed coated in fungicide, particularly Apron XL and Stamina. The rst fungicide enhances seed germination in cool, wet conditions and protects against some diseases while the latter fungicide protects against all aphanomyces during the rst six to eight weeks of growth. pathologists have conrmed the use of fungicide protects the plant at least 40% of the time. The professor recommends using the 32% coated seed with the additional fungicide proving benecial in terms of root growth and plant population. “I recommend you plant alfalfa varieties with both fungicides in the seed coat,” Undersander said. “It’s a cheap insurance. Most of you will need some of this; maybe not every time, but at
some time.” Overall, alfalfa is a resilient plant. However, there is another disease Undersander spoke of during his presentation. A new race of anthracnose was discovered a couple years ago, likely following the resistance of several races beforehand, said Undersander. Identifying the disease is simple. Plants have diamond shaped lesions on the stem and dead leaves.
“This is a disease that starts in the spring,” Undersander said. “It’s not just a summer disease like the other races of anthracnose.” Again, Undersander stressed the importance of choosing seed varieties with fungicide coatings for resistance to get more yield. “This is an insurance,” he said. “You don’t see reTurn to UNDERSANDER | Page 15

FENNIMORE, Wis. – Animal welfare has become an increasingly important concern for conscientious consumers. Dr. Jennifer Van Os, an assistant professor and extension specialist with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Dairy Science, spoke at the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin Calf Care Connection Nov. 21 in Fennimore about the value of housing calves in social groups both for the calves’ well-being and public perception.
“Talking about animal welfare, even though it’s something that producers have always been tuned into whether or not it has been called that, is something that is really good to bring to the forefront and be proud of,” Van Os said. Expectations of animal care has affected the dairy industry. Van Os illustrated how consumer questions inuence the marketing and purchasing of corporate buyers, milk marketers and ultimately dairy producers. “I think animal welfare is something that is really key to the future viability and sustainability of our dairy industry,”

Van Os said. “Part of that equation is about whether or not we can maintain public trust. Some consumers have questions about environmental impact, and some have questions about how those animals are cared for.”

Van Os said the terms animal rights and animal welfare are often muddled. “The only thing the two have in common is that people with those viewpoints think that human beings have some kind of direct ethical obligation
towards animals,” Van Os said. “People who believe in animal rights think that animals have intrinsic rights, and because of that we shouldn’t be using them for production or biomedical research. The goal of animal rights is to end animal agriculture. Animal welfare refers to the idea that we do care about animals having a good quality of life. We can use animals for certain purposes, but while they are under our care we have a responsibility to them. Those two things are very different.” Van Os said there are three aspects of animal welfare: the overall health of the animal along with their behavior and how they experience positive and negative feelings and experiences in their environment. “One of the things that inuences how an animal feels isn’t just her health status, but also is she able to do things that are important for her species and her life stage?” Van Os said. “Really understanding the nature of a cow, calf or heifer and what kinds of behaviors are important for her to perform.” Van Os said there are things to be learned about animal behavior from studying the differences in the ways we house calves. Van Os said there are other factors to consider, including better ventilation in calf-raising facilities and improved nutrition for dairy calves, that can help mitigate those concerns. “Isolating calves isn’t the only way to achieve good health outcomes,â€? Van Os said. “If we look at trends world wide, we see that pair and group housing has become common in other places.â€? Van Os said research shows some of the beneďƒžcial outcomes of social housing include an increase in play behavior which helps calves learn to interact appropriately. When calves learn appropriate behavior at a young age, the training leads the animals to have a higher social rank in the herd as adults while also being less aggressive. “Studies have found that calves that were raised with social companions have better cognitive development, showing more ďƒ&#x;exibility in their behaviors and are more adaptable to things,â€? Van Os said. “This helped them to be more resilient in the face of stress.â€? According to Van Os, studies also reveal that calves reared in pair or group housing have shown increased solid feed intakes and higher rates of weight gain. “It is a win for animal welfare and a win for calf performance,â€? Van Os said. “The third potential win is that studies suggest that social rearing of calves could also lead to better public acceptance. This could be a piece to the puzzle of maintaining the consumer base and reassuring the public that dairy farm practices align with their values.â€? Van Os sited a survey conducted by the University of Minnesota at the Minnesota State Fair of 1,300 adults not involved in the dairy industry but most being consumers of dairy products. In the study, people were shown photos in a random order of calves housed individually and in pairs or groups. The participants were asked how acceptable each type of housing was. One-third thought individual housing was acceptable, but one-half thought it was not an acceptable form of housing. For pair housing, 14% did not think it an acceptable form of housing, and 7% did not like group housing. “It is a simplistic study, but it is the ďƒžrst study that shows that social housing might also be important for this consumer buy-in,â€? Van Os said. “It could potentially be this win-win-win story of calf development and welfare, calf performance and also public acceptance.â€? Van Os acknowledges that changing calf housing on the farm is sometimes easier said than done, requiring a shift not only in management but also in facilities. She encourages dairy farmers to consider options for their farms. “When people hear group housing, they tend to think of large groups with autofeeders,â€? Van Os said. “But, it could also be smaller groups with manual feeding using individual pails or bottles. There are also options outdoors with some producers using superhutches to house pairs or small groups. Producers who have existing individual hutches can do pair housing by moving those hutches next to each other and then adjusting the fence so the calves share that area. It’s not about putting two calves in the space of one but coming up with creative ways to use what you already have.â€? Van Os said because raising calves individually is more forgiving in terms of the spread of disease, there are benchmarks to consider before making the move to group housing. Studies suggest that if you have a calf mortality rate of less than 5% and you are at less than 5% failure of passive transfer, you might encounter fewer issues making the transition to social housing. Ensuring adequate space for the number of calves in the housing situation and access to clean, dry bedding along with proper ventilation and sanitation are things to consider when thinking about making the transition. Van Os recommends being able to do all-in, all-out when utilizing group housing.

REAL® Seal program unveils new website to help consumers choose authentic dairy foods To help consumers nd real dairy foods in an increasingly confusing retail marketplace, the National Milk Producers Federation unveiled a completely redesigned website for the REAL® Seal, www.realseal.com, complete with a buyer’s guide that helps steer shoppers to those brands that feature the REAL Seal and use only real milk. This is the rst signicant change in the online presence for the REAL Seal since NMPF rst assumed management of the Seal in 2012. The new website will contain more content to educate consumers about why they should look for the REAL® Seal on the foods they buy, while also continuing to help those companies using the Seal to enhance their product marketing. The new website will educate consumers about the REAL® Seal brand and the benets of domestic dairy products, as only dairy foods made in America with American-produced cows’ milk are eligible to display the REAL® Seal. The site showcases certied brands and products, and makes it easier for users to learn where to purchase them in retail locations. It also streamlines the REAL® Seal application process to encourage more brands to apply for certication. “NMPF continues to battle the misuse of dairy terms by plant-based products that seek to copy every aspect of real dairy, apart from nutrition,” said Jim Mulhern, president and CEO of NMPF. “The REAL® Seal allows us to work with food marketers to apply a simple, highly-recognizable icon on their products to help consumers separate the real from the fake.” The new website both educates consumers about how real dairy foods compare to imitators, and explains how the REAL Seal program delineates which brands can use the seal. The REAL Guide component of the website helps shoppers nd certied brands and products displaying the Seal. “We know many consumers want authentic foods made with quality and integrity. A dynamic program providing up-to-date research and practical applications of the latest ndings in mastitis control and milk quality will be available for the expected 400-plus attendees. “The 2020 NMC Annual Meeting offers state-of-the-art information on mastitis and milk quality for anyone interested – from scientist to producer,” said Program Chair Sarne De Vliegher of Ghent University, Belgium. The rst session will bring a keynote address on innovation in prevention, control and diagnosis of mastitis, followed by a dairy update from around the world. The next session will highlight the latest on several important mastitis-causing pathogens. “We are very excited about the Friday program that features an interactive session on motivational interviewing – showcasing how it can help improve mastitis management on farms, while reducing the need for antimicrobials at the same time,” said De Vliegher. The nal session will be very applied, with experienced speakers touching on mastitis control basics. In addition to the general sessions, the NMC Annual Meeting offers an optional dairy farm tour and 18 short courses. MN Ag Water Quality Certication Program adding endorsements to recognize outstanding farmers The Minnesota Agricultural Water Quality Certication Program (MAWQCP) is launching three new endorsements in addition to 10-year certication a farmer or landowner receives in the program. The new endorsements were announced at this week’s Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts Convention. The MAWQCP endorsements available to water quality certied producers are for soil health, integrated pest management, and wildlife. “We recognize that many conservation practices targeting water quality also have benets for other conservation goals, such as wildlife,” said Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen. “These Ag Water Quality Certication endorsements celebrate the certied producers who are going above and beyond to implement conservation on their farms.” The MAWQCP partnered with various non-prot organizations, such as Pheasants Forever and the Minnesota Soil Health Coalition, and state agencies to develop the endorsements. “Pheasants Forever commends the Minnesota Department of Agriculture for their collaboration and recognition of the many benets that the Minnesota Agricultural Water Quality Certication Program provides in addition to water quality,” said Tanner Bruse, Ag and Conservation Programs Manager for Pheasants Forever. “The MAWQCP and wildlife endorsement recognizes our great Minnesota farmers and their passion for farming for the future and dedication to conservation. Habitat goes beyond wildlife with positive impacts towards water quality, soil health, and carbon sequestration.” “The Minnesota Soil Health Coalition appreciates the dedication of the MAWQCP, helping producers identify and implement practices to improve their operations and resource concerns and value the soil health endorsement as another avenue to engage and improve soil health across Minnesota” said Brian Pfarr, Minnesota Soil Health Coalition Board Chairman. 1/2 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 teaspoon peppermint extract 1 teaspoon fresh mint, chopped 2 eggs 1 fresh mint sprig, optional
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Combine cookie crumbs and melted butter in medium bowl until mixture resembles sand. Press ďƒžrmly into bottom of 36 paper lined mini-mufďƒžn cups or 36 mini-mufďƒžn cups coated with cooking spray. Beat cream cheese, sugar, vanilla, peppermint and chopped mint until smooth in a large mixing bowl. Add eggs one at a time, scraping sides of the bowl after additions. Spoon 1 tablespoon of ďƒžlling into prepared mufďƒžn cups and bake 15-18 minutes or until centers are almost set. Cool completely. Cover and chill at least two hours. Garnish with fresh mint sprigs just before serving, if desired.
