BROWNSVILLE, Wis. – Oakdale Dairy reached a special milestone in 2020 when it celebrated its 150th anniversary. In the Weiglein family since 1865, this sesquicentennial farm located in Brownsville is owned by John and Bonnie Weiglein and run by their son, Aaron, and his wife, Lizzy. The farm was homesteaded in 1846 by Albert Hart. In 1865, John’s greatgreat grandfather, Andrew (Andreas) Weiglein, a native of Germany, bought the farm for $1,500. In 1905, Andrew sold the farm to John W. for $7,000, who then sold it to Art Sr. for $40,000 in 1940. John’s dad, Art Jr., bought the farm in 1980, and John bought it from his dad in 2006. Now, Aaron and Lizzy live on the farm with their 9-month-old son, A.J. Aaron is the sixth generation to run the Weiglein farm, and his son would be the seventh. “We’re unique in that we’ve stayed the same size all these years,” John said. “Experts say you should expand
every 5-10 years, but I didn’t agree with that. We were milking 70 cows when I graduated from high school, and we’re still milking 70 today. We watch what we spend and take good care of our cows and manage to stay protable.” John farmed with his father from 1983 until 1991 when he took over the farm. In 1999, he and Bonnie left the farm in favor of another family business they purchased from Bonnie’s aunt and uncle – an apple orchard known as Pieper’s Fruit Farm. Bonnie’s grandparents planted the rst apple trees in 1934, and now the Weigleins grow 50 varieties of apples on 23 acres. Apples are sold at their onfarm store or customers can pick their own apples in the orchard. “Honey Crisp is our biggest seller,” Bonnie said. Homemade pressed apple cider and caramel apples are also for sale in the Weigleins’ store, along with other products from Wisconsin, such as maple syrup. In addition, the Weigleins also sell apples to grocery stores. After selling their cows, the Weigleins moved to the orchard, which is 4 miles away, but continued raising heifers and steers while renting out the house. He ended up picking cows over apples. “I always knew I wanted to farm,” said Aaron, 24, who brought cows back to Oakdale Dairy in 2013 while in high school. It was a plan in the making for a couple of years as Aaron and John bought heifer calves to build their herd. Starting out with about 40 head, Aaron purchased the rest of the cattle on his own, and by 2015, they were back up to 70 cows. Cows are milked in the original 36-stall stanchion barn that was built in the early 1900s and housed in a freestall barn
that was upgraded in 2012. The Weigleins built a new calf barn in 2015 and a heifer shed in 2011. “This is a simple farm,” Aaron said. “We don’t push our cows, but we do feed good quality feed.” Other than 20 acres across the road sold off by Andrew in the late 1800s, the 140-acre farm is the same size today as it was when it entered the family many years ago. The Weigleins have also found heirlooms from bygone eras, such as a Civil War button, which they believed belong to Andrew, who served in the war. Aaron and Lizzy have made their home in the 1914

The couple met online on the dating website, Farmers Only. Even though Lizzy did not grow up on a farm, her love for country and the farming lifestyle drew her to her perfect match – a dairy farmer. Aaron and Lizzy are expecting their second child Dec. 31. John and Bonnie own the farm, while Aaron and Lizzy own the cattle and machinery. The farm operates with no hired help – just family. ConƟnued from WEIGLEIN | Page 4 “Milking is my favorite job,” Aaron said. “I nd it calming. It’s a time when I can really think.” The orchard is a full-time, yearround job for John and Bonnie; however, John and Aaron have an arrangement that allows each one to take a week off in the summer while the other takes care of the dairy farm. This allowed Aaron and Lizzy to go to Hawaii for their honeymoon last year. “We start pruning the trees in January or February if there’s not a lot of snow, and we’ll prune until mid-June,” said John, who worked at the orchard part time after graduating from high school. “We also have to care for the little trees, mow the grass and thin the
apples out by hand if the trees get too thick.” Surrounded by thousands of apple trees, the Weigleins start picking apples in the beginning of August and nish up by the end of October. They picked over 9,000 bushels of apples this year – the most in recent years. Pieper’s Fruit Farm is for sale as John and Bonnie are preparing for retirement and looking forward to slowing down a bit. Between the dairy farm and apple orchard, their time away is limited, and the Weigleins see retirement as an opportunity to travel and spend more time with family. “We’re ready to cut back and enjoy life,” Bonnie said. “We plan to build
a house near Aaron and Lizzy so we can be close to our grandchildren. We also have a grandson in Minnesota who we’d like to visit more often.” The Weigleins also have three daughters – Amberly, 27, Amy, 22, and Aleah, 13. Amberly works at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, and Amy will be graduating from college this month and pursuing a teaching career. John has fond memories of farming with his handicapped daughter, Becky, who passed away in 2016. A special family member who is dearly missed by all, Becky spent a lot of quality time in the barn with her dad. “When I milked cows, I set up a playpen in one of the old calf pens,
and she would sleep while the vacuum pump ran,” John said. “As soon as the pump stopped, she would wake up. I miss those days.” While transitioning from generation to generation, the 150-year-old Weiglein farm has stood the test of time. “We’re in good shape for the next generation to take over 5 years or so down the road,” John said. “The farm is very similar to how it was long ago, and we plan to keep it that way.” His son agreed. “I have no interest in getting bigger,” Aaron said. “This is the right size for us.”

ROBERTS, Wis. – In March 2015, Justin and Danielle Johnson sold their milking cows, began off-farm jobs and managed their crop land. However, when Justin made the rst cut of hay that summer, the sweet smell made him realize that more than anything, he wanted to milk cows again. Justin and Danielle, along with their children, Delila, 9, and Levi, 7, are milking 23 cows in a 40-cow tiestall barn on their farm in Roberts. The herd is mostly rst-calf 2-year-olds averaging 62 pounds of milk per day with a 30,000 somatic cell count. By the spring, Justin said he will have another group of 2-year-olds calve in and will have the barn full, milk-

ing about 40 head. The farm, which is owned by his parents and grandmother, consists of 310 acres; Justin rents another 40 acres in partnership with his father and rents 285 acres on his own. The land base provides all the feed needed for the herd as well as creating an income from cash-cropping. The heifers were purchased as calves two years ago and raised by the family. The heifers began calving in early September and shipped their rst load of milk to Dairy Farmers of America Oct. 10. “It was the rst time the milk hit the bottom of the agitator in the bulk tank,” Justin said. “DFA has been great to work with, and it is so good to work with a eldman who is just as excited by the whole thing as I am.” While they are getting their young herd up and running, Justin continues working off the farm as a CNC machinist, while Danielle is a nurse. “After the cows left, we tore out all of the fences and everything,” Justin said. “So starting back up was really Turn to JOHNSON | Page 7

Justin took time to crunch numbers and make some plans, penciling out what he considered to be the worst-case scenarios nancially, to determine if his desire to milk again was a dream worth chasing. Ultimately, they decided it was, and Justin began work gutting the barn, which housed stanchion stalls installed by his grandfather in 1952, and replacing them with comfort tie stalls. Future plans include a lean-to addition to add maternity pens and room to house about 10 switch cows, increasing their capacity. “Some of the cement was original from when the barn was built in the early 1900s,” Justin said. “It was really kind of neat to think of the history.” The entire process to ready the farm for cows took over four years. Justin worked extra odd jobs, picked up overtime at his full-time job, did custom baling and cash-cropped to help pay for the renovations. Outside of pouring the new concrete, he did the remodeling himself by completing the work in his spare time, which often made for long nights spent working in the barn. The process was not with-

would ask Danielle why she was supporting me, but I’m lucky. And, Danielle is my biggest cheerleader.” Shortly after Justin had begun to work on renovating the barn, Justin suffered a potentially life-altering injury at work, cutting the tendons, muscles, veins and arteries in

his wrist. “I lost so much blood, the doctors told me I was lucky to get to the hospital when I did,” Justin said. “They also told me that I’d never regain the use of my hand. At rst I gave up and thought it was over.” With hard work and therapy, however, Justin began to
use his hand beyond what the doctors had thought possible. “As it started to come around, I started to get more excited again,” Justin said. “Once I got to the point where I could milk cows again, I got really committed into bringing cows back to the farm.” One of the most rewarding aspects of starting to milk cows again for the Johnsons is the ability to raise their children on a working dairy farm. “The kids love going out and helping feed calves and taking care of the animals,” Danielle said. “It is a great life for them, to have that freedom and to learn the responsibility of caring for the animals. They are great helpers in the barn.” Justin enjoys sharing the farm with his family and teaching his children to love it as much as he does. He takes great joy in watching them learn to feed calves and do the other chores. “I like that we can teach our kids what real work is,” Justin said. “They see us work our tails off toward a goal, and then they see us achieve that. If they don’t take anything else away from this, I hope they learn that they can be successful at anything they put their minds and their hearts into.”

This year’s Classic features a strong opening general session with pertinent keynote presentations; an interactive tradeshow that is accessible 24/7 all four days of the Classic; and forty-ve educational breakout sessions. The sessions cover a wide range of topics including the latest research on cover cropping, crop production and water quality; dicamba training; Farm Service Agency program updates; grain market outlook; and getting value from fungicides in corn and soybean production. Bongards Creameries recognized with water quality achievement award In early November, the Central States Water Environment Association (CSWEA) recognized Bongards’ Creameries with the 2020 Industrial Water Quality Achievement Award. The award was presented at the CSWEA 35th Annual Conference on the Environment in recognition of Bongards’ waste reduction goals, wastewater treatment success, water reuse, and other environmental initiatives at their Perham, MN natural cheese production plant. As plant capacity has increased in recent years, Bongards has made continuous improvements to their wastewater treatment programs and facilities, increasing capacity and monitoring capabilities. Once treated, the wastewater is used to irrigate local elds. In addition, the company was able to repurpose a cheese production byproduct that was previously discarded, generating a nutrient source that is valuable for animal feed. The Bongards Perham production plant is a 140,000 square foot facility, capable of processing over 4 million pounds of milk daily into natural cheese blocks and barrels. Located in an environmentally sensitive area, surrounded by many lakes and the Otter Tail River, tourism and recreation are important to the community. “In order to maintain the valuable natural resources of our local Perham community, responsible management of the wastewater generated from our cheese production process is of critical importance to Bongards,” said Daryl Larson, Bongards President and CEO. Planning moves forward for Wisconsin Farm Technology Days 2021 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days 2021, now scheduled for July 20-22, 2021, will take place at Huntsinger Farms, the largest grower and processor of Horseradish in the United States. Originally scheduled for July 2020, the Eau Claire show moved to 2021 given safety protocols required because of COVID-19. The Executive Committee and its sub-committees have been meeting virtually since late summer 2020 and are moving forward with extensive planning for a safe and successful show in July 2021. 295 exhibitors from across the Midwest and Canada have already committed to the 2021 show, and based on inquiries, attendee anticipation is high for next year’s show. Wisconsin Farm Technology Days has more than a 65-year history of bringing producers and service providers together to share what is new and innovative in agriculture. “We are optimistic and excited about the 2021 show,” said Mike Gintner, Executive Chair Wisconsin Farm Technology Days, Eau Claire. “We are grateful to the Rygg family for their generosity in hosting the show on their Huntsinger Farm Eau Claire property, which has taken important acreage out of commission for an extra year.
“The Committee is excited to produce an outstanding show for exhibitors, sponsors and attendees alike,” added Gintner. “Everyone has doubled-down on their commitments, extending their volunteer service by an extra year, and working to improve on our already-exciting plans.” The show has launched a new, robust website at https://www.wifarmtechdays.org which features a real-time map showing exhibitor and exhibit locations, as well as a visitor “My Show Planner” feature that visitors can use to get the most out of the threeday show. The annual economic impact of every Iowa dairy cow to the community is $25,495 The new “Comprehensive Review of Iowa’s Dairy Industry” denes how important the Iowa dairy industry continues to be and just how strong an economic driver it is in Iowa and the Midwest. The projected national trends for dairy products show increases in protability and forecasters expect that dairy revenue will continue to rise at 1.15% to $39.9 billion during 2019-24 (IBIS World Dairy Production 2019). Iowa continues to be a signicant contributor to dairy production based upon several factors that include necessary infrastructure, natural resources, inputs and experience. The state has a unique competitive advantage in these categories and continues to expand on these assets for identied growth opportunities. The economic impact realized by the state from the dairy industry projects the following: Key metrics include total economic impact of Iowa’s dairy industry is $5.6 billion, supplying 15,587 jobs with a labor income of $891 million. Annual economic impact of a single dairy cow is $25,495 per cow. Coronavirus Relief Fund Farm Business Management scholarships available The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is announcing a new Farm Business Management (FBM) Scholarship Program, funded through the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Nearly $250,000 in scholarships will be available to farmers negatively affected economically by COVID-19. Priority will be given to farmers engaged in any stage of mediation or bankruptcy between March 2, 2020 and Dec. 30, 2020. An estimated 350 Minnesota farmers are currently distressed due to COVID-19 impact, including farmers in mediation, bankruptcy, foreclosure, and debt restructuring. The FBM program offered by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, helps farmers manage their nances and learn how to navigate the complicated nancial systems of farming. The scholarships will cover approximately 75% of the cost of tuition. To apply contact an FBM instructor. Applications will be available Nov. 6, 2020. Applicants must be registered for at least 10 credits for either fall, spring, or combination by Dec. 10, 2020. Funding for this program is made available through the CARES Act, and is part of a $7.7 million plan announced earlier this month by Gov. Tim Walz and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan to support agricultural producers, meat processors, and farmers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The house would be between small and medium size, and there would be plants all over the house. I would have cats and a dog. What is your favorite dairy treat? Whole milk with oatmeal raisin cookies for dipping. What is your favorite thing to do on the farm during the winter? We hook up the sled behind the Gator and drive it on the snow-covered elds that have frozen manure, which is bumpy and someone usually falls out. It is awesome.

Wicked was also Jr. Champion of the Midwest Regional Show held in West Salem, in August.
