Dairy farmer times two Mills committed to cows, goats By Stacey Smart

OSHKOSH, Wis. – Between her work at Overtons’ Farm LLC and Wy-Guy Dairy Goats, Becky Mills has little to no time to spare. Helping run two farms keeps Mills on her toes, but there is no other way she would rather spend her time. “This is a labor of love,� said Mills of the goat farm she and her husband, Marvin, built with their son, Wyatt. “I wouldn’t trade these goats for the world.� What started out as a present for Wyatt’s second birthday turned into a full-blown goat operation. WyGuy Dairy Goats has grown from two goats to more than 200 head. Mills attributes most of the growth to Wyatt, who the farm was named after. The 13-yearold animal lover has been buying his own goats for years with money he earns milking cows at Overtons’

The Mills family milks 50 goats on their farm near Oshkosh but peaks at 120 head milking in the spring. Mills’ day job is at her family’s dairy farm – Overtons’ Farm – where she works with her mom, Karen, her brother, Matt, her aunt and uncle, Sue and Charlie, and one hired hand, Ray Wallace, who Mills said is like family. Her grandpa, Bill, is 92 years old and helps with ďƒželd work. The family milks 280 cows and farms 500 acres a quarter mile from Mills’ farm. Wyatt is the sixth generation, and at times, there are

convinced Mills to buy those rst two goats 11 years ago. The ultimate goal is for Marvin to quit his job and tend to the goats full time, allowing them to milk 120-130 head year-round. “Marvin wanted goats for a long time, but I kept saying no,” Mills said. “Now, I can’t imagine life without them. Goats are fun and have such personality. They bring us a lot of joy.” A hobby turned into a business in 2014 when the Mills family moved to their current location and built a parlor for the goats. Goat pioneers in their area, Mills said Wy-Guy dairy is the only goat dairy in Winnebago County. “We kept accumulating goats, so we decided to build a barn for them and ship milk to make some money off it,” Mills said. Goats are milked in a double-9 parlor with six units. Mills likes the herringbone design versus a parallel style as it allows her to see more of each goat. “I don’t get to spend as much time with the goats as I do with the cows, so this is my chance to see them up close,” Mills said. The goat milk is shipped to Saputo, while Overtons’ Farm ships its milk to Grande. Mills also provides goat milk to a couple people who make soap and a local dog breeder. The Wy-Guy goat herd is diverse, containing six breeds – Toggenburg, LaMancha, Oberhasli, Saanen, Nigerian and recorded grade (a mix of two breeds.) The Saanens came about in 2017 when Wyatt was gifted with a herd from a lady the Mills family met through showing. Mills and her family are not just raising goats for fun. Focused on genetics, they are working to create a high-quality goat herd. “Genetics are important,” Mills said. “You need to start with good genetics. You can’t begin at the bottom and expect to work your way up. Our mentality is to start with good bucks. We’ve brought them in from all over – Texas, Arizona, Washington, etc.” Mills currently has 15 bucks in the herd and likes to have at least two bucks on hand for each breed. To further advance the farm’s genetics, Mills took an A.I. course in goat breeding this year and settled her rst goat. “Articial insemination will allow us to use a broader spectrum of genetics and consolidate the number of bucks we have onsite,” Mills said. “Breeding goats is radically different from breeding cows. Another distinction to get used to is the fact goats can freshen at 1 year old, while cows calve at 2 years.” The family loves to show and takes goats to several shows in Wisconsin as well as the state fair and national show if it is not too far away. One summer, Wyatt had six best in show wins, and
last year, he won grand champion and Best of Breed Saanen at the Wisconsin State Fair. “I get the biggest joy out of watching Wyatt show,” Mills said. Wyatt has big ambitions, and his goal is to send his goat milk to its own bulk tank. He also helps with breeding decisions for the goats he owns. All of the family’s goats are registered and each has a name. Tinkerbelle is their oldest doe at 12 years of age. “We sell a lot of breeding stock,” Mills said. “We’ve also donated a goat for the last six years to the Wisconsin Dairy Goat Association’s Share a Goat Kid program.” February through May is a hectic time on the goat farm with 30 does freshening each month. Kidding season can keep Mills in the barn until 11 at night. “The excitement never wears off during kidding season,” Mills said. “Every single baby – down to the last one born – is as fun as the rst. Most goats have two to three kids at a time, but Nigerians can have four or ve.” The kids are a hands-on project as all are bottle fed. Bucks are sold immediately, while a certain number of does are kept as replacements. “Every year, there’s a different target we need for replacements,” Mills said. “It’s hard to decide who stays and who goes. We consider who might be the best milkers and who has the best genetics. Last year, we kept 30 does.” Sometimes Mills chooses to milk a goat through rather than rebreed her every year. “It’s like having two lactations in one,” she said. “You can’t do that with a cow. This works well for us. The does dip a little in spring when they would normally kid but then go right back up in production. We had one goat we milked for three years straight.” Goats are fed a high-grass diet mixed with alfalfa. The Millses buy all their feed and tried six feed mills before nding the right t. “Achieving consistent grain and hay quality was the hardest thing,” Mills said. “We drive over an hour to get grain, but it’s worth the trip to have healthy animals. It was also hard to nd a good vet when we started as no one in the area took care of goats. The vet we use for our cows is who we use for our goats. If she doesn’t know something, she’ll look it up.” The goats have become an irreplaceable love for Mills and her family. “People say, ‘You have no free time,’” Mills said. “But all three of us are out here as a family, and this is fun for us. I get to do what I Iove for a living, and I get to do it with my family. This is an amazing way to raise Wyatt, and I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

Charlie’s family ďƒžlls the barn 13-year-old Holstein a favorite with Sonnek By Danna Sabolik

FORESTON, Minn. – When Eric Sonnek needs a pick-me-up in a tumultuous year, he knows he can count on Charlie. “There’s cows and then there’s family, and that’s Charlie, by all means,� said Sonnek of his favorite cow. Charlie is a 13-year-old registered Holstein on Sonnek’s 90-cow dairy near Foreston. She has produced over 250,000 pounds of milk and has transitioned into a welldeserved retirement. “I have lost track of how many daughters (she has),� Sonnek said. “She will make 30 eggs pretty easily.� Sonnek is proud of her genetics and proud she can continue to provide excellence in generations of cows to come. “She’s all personality,� Sonnek said. Sonnek has a special connection with Charlie and can read her better than most cows on the farm. She is scored Ex-

Soon enough, they found Charlie was ranked in the top 30 heifers of the nation genetic-wise. After that initial show, she was not shown again, but her legacy lived on through her offspring. “She has a few popular A.I. bulls, Corvette and Golddust are two you might hear about,â€? Sonnek said. He enjoys hearing about where Charlie’s genetics end up, and how they ďƒžt into other’s herds. Using technology to keep in touch with other farmers, Sonnek can see photos and send updates on how his old gal is doing. “People will text me that they have a connection to her, so that’s been really fun,â€? Sonnek said. As she ages upward, Charlie has had a few close calls. “We almost lost her in September,â€? She is classied as Excellent-94. bounce back like normal, and Sonnek started to worry. “Her being 13, we made plans to do a terminal IVF on her and I spent some time with her,” he said. “I went to get some pain killers, and we were going to try to get her up for the procedure. When I came back, she was up in the barn and drinking water.” Charlie is fondly known to be the farm’s babysitter. “She has a unique bellow, and I have called her the babysitter because when a baby is born, she’ll be standing near it and hollering,” Sonnek said. After 13 years together, Sonnek is great at reading her intricacies.
“The other day I walked in the barn and she was looking at me with her head up,” he said. “I knew she was in heat, and sure enough, she was.” Sonnek’s parents, Junior and Judy, moved to the area in 1962 from near Mankato. They started a herd of registered Holsteins for Eric and his brother, Kyle, to show in 4-H. Today Sonnek carries on that legacy by leasing animals to local 4-H’ers. “We leased out 14 animals last year,” he said. “Most of them are Charlie babies.” On Sonnek’s farm, it is not a herd, it is a family.

Class III price tops $23 for November
The Agriculture Department announced the November Federal order Class III milk price at $23.34 per hundredweight, up $1.73 from October, $2.89 above November 2019, and the highest Class III since July. The 2020 Class III average stands at $18.39, up from $16.74 at this time a year ago and $14.69 in 2018. The December 4 late morning Class III futures contract was trading at $15.38, which would portend an $18.14 average for 2020. The Class IV price is $13.30, down 17 cents from October and $3.30 below a year ago. That put the 11-month average at $13.50, down from $16.26 a year ago and compares to $14.15 in 2018. The large gap between October and November Class III and Class I prices again likely led to processor de-pooling and huge producer price differentials (PPDs), resulting in dairy farmers in many regions losing millions of dollars in revenue. I asked HighGround Dairy’s Lucas Fuess in the December 7 “Dairy Radio Nowâ€? broadcast if it’s time to restructure how we price milk in this country. He said it’s a decades-old question and one of the issues is the complexity of the Federal order program. “When dairy farmers don’t understand exactly how their milk is being priced, there is some resistance to the system,â€? he said. Federal orders also make export contracts more difďƒžcult, according to Fuess, and “Exports will be a key driver of dairy product disappearance and higher prices for farmers, hopefully in the future, if federal orders can be tweaked to allow longer term contracts to happen.â€? As to negative PPDs, Fuess said “They’re a reďƒ&#x;ection of volatility in milk and for some farmers who are not necessarily seeing those negative PPDs, depending on the region, they have been extremely thankful for record high cheese prices.â€? “Ultimately it’s the hope, and the system is designed, so PPDs average out close to the zero mark over the long term,â€? he reasoned. “If there’s something that can be done to even those out better on a month to month basis and allow farmers to receive the higher value of that cheese milk maybe there is something that could be looked at there.â€? The system has been around since the 1930s, he said, and has prioritized Class I milk. “Perhaps a discussion can be had around having just one manufacturing class to allow milk to move to its highest value overall.â€? “Federal orders have not been revised in any

sort for more than 10 years,â€? Fuess said, “with make allowances being the same since prior to 2010, and there’s a question there as to what those numbers should be as well.â€? It’s important for dairy farmers to consider every risk management tool available, he concluded. “Farmers also have the power to vote orders out or processors can take a look at make allowances to see if there are other tweaks that could be made to the system that would beneďƒžt everyone.â€? You’ll recall October milk output hit 18.56 billion pounds, up 2.3% from 2019. The October Dairy Products report shows that more milk went into powder and butter. Cheese output totaled 1.13 billion pounds, up 3.2% from September, but 0.6% below October 2019. Year to date total cheese sits at 10.96 billion pounds, up just 0.4% from a year ago. Wisconsin produced 286 million pounds of that October total, up 2.8% from September but 0.9% below a year ago. California output hit 200.6 million pounds, up 4.1% from September but 7.1% below a year ago. Idaho, with 86 million pounds, was down 1.2% from September and 1.0% below a year ago. Italian type cheese totaled 469.2 million pounds, up 1.3% from September but 3.4% below a year ago. YTD Italian was at 4.7 billion pounds, down 1.2%. American type cheese totaled 461.1 million pounds, up 6.1% from September and 3.5% above a year ago. YTD American was at 4.4 billion pounds, up 2.0%. Mozzarella output was at 366 million pounds, down 4.8% from a year ago, with YTD at 3.7 billion pounds, down 1.4% from 2019. Cheddar, which trades daily at the CME, climbed to 326.9 million pounds, highest October volume ever, up 19.9 million pounds or 6.5% from September and 17.3 million or 5.6% above October 2019. YTD Cheddar is at 3.2 billion pounds, up 2.7% from a year ago. Butter churns produced 164.9 million pounds, up 13.3 million pounds or 8.8% from September and 2 million pounds or 1.2% above a year ago. YTD butter is at 1.7 billion pounds, up 5.9% from 2019. Yogurt production totaled 382.9 million pounds, up 7.1% from a year ago, with the YTD total at 3.8 billion pounds, up 2.3% Whey totaled 80.2 million pounds, up 5.4 million or 7.2% from September but 10.6 million or 11.8% below a year ago, with YTD at 810.6 million, down 1.5%. ago. Nonfat dry milk climbed to 138.4 million pounds, up 12.4 million pounds or 9.8% from September and 5.7 million or 4.3% above a year ago. YTD powder sits at 1.6 billion pounds, up 2.1% from 2019. Stocks, at 234.9 million pounds, were up 1.6 million or 0.7% from September, but 17 million or 7.8% above a year ago. Skim milk powder output fell to 57.2 million pounds, down 15.3 million pounds or 21.1% from September but 9.8 million pounds or 20.7% above a year ago. YTD skim milk powder is at 510.2 million pounds, up a hefty 11.7% from a year ago. StoneX called the report “bearish on cheese and non-fat dry milk and neutral butter. Cheese and NFDM were bearish for different reasons. Cheese production has been weak this year, which would not normally be bearish except it is currently coupled with weak demand,â€? says StoneX. “Non-fat and skim milk powder on the other hand have showed that processors have been very willing to produce powder, which has added on big volume to current stocks. Butter’s neutral reading comes as production came in below our expectations. Demand for butter is not good, but fat continues to ďƒ&#x;ow increasingly into ice cream, sour cream, and yogurt,â€? says StoneX Dairy. Market bulls got some fodder in the December 1 Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction. The event’s weighted average was up 4.3%, biggest gain since July 7, and followed the 1.8% rise on November 17, and a 2.0% descent November 3. Every product offered saw strong gains, led by lactose, up 13.5%, after plunging 18.8% on November 17. Whole milk powder was up 5%, after rising 1.8% last time, and skim milk powder was up 3.6%, following a 2.5% rise. Butter was up 3.8%, after inching 0.4% higher, and anhydrous milkfat was up 2.6% following a 4.1% rise. GDT Cheddar was up 2.4%, after dropping 3.5% last time, and buttermilk powder was up 1.3%. StoneX equated the GDT 80% butterfat butter price to $1.7638 per pound U.S., up 6.5 cents from the last event. CME butter closed Friday at $1.48. GDT Cheddar cheese equated to $1.6935 per pound, up 4.2 cents, and compares to Friday’s CME block Cheddar at $1.5850. GDT skim milk powder averaged $1.3103 per pound, up from $1.2696, and whole milk powder averaged $1.4435, up from $1.3774. CME Grade A nonfat dry milk closed Friday at $1.15 a pound. Rising global prices and a weak dollar are making U.S. dairy exports increasingly attractive to importers, according to the Daily Dairy Report. “As demand rises globally, as evidenced both by the sharp GDT price advances and recent strong demand from China, U.S. exporters could begin to move larger shipments overseas, which could offer a lift to U.S. dairy product values, especially milk and whey powders.â€? Most CME dairy prices entered December a little stronger except cheese. The Cheddar blocks closed Friday at $1.5850 per pound, lowest since August 11. That’s down 9.5 cents on the week and 38.5 cents below a year ago. Midwest cheesemakers reported widely available spot milk the week after Thanksgiving, according to Dairy Market News, and “wholly discounted.”Cheese producers say demand is steady to intermittent, with concern expressed that further restrictions on food service establishments due to COVID-19 will have further impact on sales. Market tones remain “hobbled after a resolutely bearish November,” says DMN. “Markets are under pressure but Midwestern contacts have yet to relay strong concerns regarding inventory growth.” Western cheese output is also active. Heavy milk volumes from the week of Thanksgiving kept facilities full and most plants were already at or near capacity. Manufacturers are hesitant to add much cheese to their inventories while milk prices are strong and cheese prices are falling. Some suggest buyer interest is slowly returning as market prices have fallen. Demand for cheese from retail and pizza sectors is steady and solid, but food service demand is lacking. Butter saw daily gains and closed at $1.48 per pound, up 12 cents on the week, highest since October 20, but 43.5 cents below a year ago, on 34 sales reported. Some Central butter producers report fall volumes are moving quickly. Government orders have receded so they are focusing more on retail customers. Food service remains slow and contacts are still waiting for the full impact of COVID restaurant closures and restrictions. Cream has been, and is, widely available at declining prices and producers are unconcerned about nding cream for the rest of the month or year. Butter market tones were improving day to day this week, but fall has been anything but bullish for the typically stalwart market. Western contacts expected lots of cream to be available over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend due to manufacturing facilities closing. As butter makers shift to end of year holiday orders, the underlying focus is to manage stocks. Requests for holiday print butter remain active but inventories appear to be quite adequate. Manufacturers will get a clearer picture of butter needs starting the post-holiday week as some buyers have adjusted purchases around their immediate needs. Bulk butter demand is quiet, says DMN. Grade A nonfat dry milk climbed to $1.1575 per pound Thursday, highest since February 21, but closed Friday at $1.15, still 5.5 cents higher on the week and 11.75 cents below a year ago. There were 25 sales reported on the week. CME dry whey climbed to a 46.25 cents per pound close, up 3.25 cents on the week, highest since January 22, 2019, and 9.5 cents above a year ago, with 5 sales reported on the week. A sharp jump in the U.S. All Milk price offset higher corn and soybean prices to push the October milk feed price ratio higher. The latest Ag Prices report has the ratio at 2.50, up from 2.28 in September, and 2.42 in October 2019. The index is based on the current milk price in relationship to feed prices for a dairy ration consisting of 51% corn, 8% soybeans and 41% alfalfa hay. One pound of milk could purchase 2.50 pounds of dairy feed of that blend in October. The US All-Milk price averaged $20.20 per hundredweight (cwt.), up $2.30 from September and 20 cents above the October 2019 average. California’s All Milk price jumped to $21.20, up $2.50 from September and $2.30 above a year ago. Wisconsin’s, at $21.50, was up $3.80 from September and 80 cents above a year ago. The national average corn price averaged $3.61 per bushel, up 21 cents per bushel from September but 24 cents per bushel below October 2019. Soybeans averaged $9.63 per bushel, up 39 cents

from September and $1.03 per bushel above a year ago. Alfalfa hay averaged $171 per ton, unchanged from September but $6 per ton below a year ago. Looking at the cow side; the October cull price for beef and dairy combined averaged $60.00 per cwt., down $6.60 from September, 90 cents below October 2019, and $11.60 below the 2011 base average of $71.60 per cwt. In the week ending November 21, 58,700 dairy cows were sent to slaughter, unchanged from the week before but 5,600 head or 8.7% below a year ago. The U.S. cotton harvest was at 84%, as of the week ending November 29, up 2% from the same week a year ago and 5% ahead of the ve year average. In politics, the National Milk Producers Federation congratulated Representative David Scott (D-GA) on being elected by his colleagues to serve as the Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee
in the 117th Congress. Scott has served on the committee since coming to Congress in 2003. He was Chairman of the Dairy Subcommittee during the 2009 dairy market collapse and has supported bipartisan legislation to enhance milk consumption in schools, says NMPF. Meanwhile, the Washington State Supreme Court has ruled that farm workers must receive overtime pay after 40 hours. The ruling effectively struck down the state’s decades-old exemption and will mean huge increases in labor expense. The Washington State Dairy Federation stated; “While we believe the court erred in its opinion, this case involves a state constitutional question, and there is no venue to appeal it beyond the state Supreme Court. Our advice is for dairy farmers to begin paying workers time-and-a-half for overtime immediately.”

HELPING GOOD MANAGERS MAKE BETTER TRADING DECISIONS This morning as I pondered the start of the work week next to the freshly put up Christmas tree I felt a sense of comfort and gratitude for what Christ’s life has meant to my family. I pray that each of you find a peace that surpasses all understanding through this coming Christmas season as all that Christs life stands for blesses you and provides you this comfort. Not much has changed in the dairy markets since the last column. December and January Class III remain under pressure due to the sharp correction in spot cheese prices. December Class III will likely settle in the low $15’s. Spot cheese will need to rally soon or January Class III will begin pricing near $15. Recent trading has allowed most of the forward 2021 Class III contracts to trade above $17/cwt. Much of this price optimism is tied to higher feed costs and improving world dairy product prices. It is difficult to identify inflationary forces in the market, but it is highly likely that lower interest rates will continue to pressure the dollar. This inevitably supports monetary ag price inflation. The grain markets may be seeing the first signs of this as demand for U.S. grain exports remains strong and may be
spilling over into the dairy markets. Spot CME group prices are trading in the upper $1.50’s/blocks, low $1.40’s/barrels, $1.52/butter, $1.15/ NFDM and 46 cent whey. The powder markets continue to work higher as U.S. prices are the cheapest in the world. U.S. stocks for these products are also at the lowest levels seen in prior 5 years. This can’t be said for most of the cold storage products, but is supportive to the powder side of the dairy business. The recent whey price strength has added over 40 cents to the Class III value. Grain prices have softened in recent weeks as aggressive Chinese buying slowed. China demand data is showing a return to normal as their hog herd is nearly repopulated. This has put China in a position where its corn use is outpacing domestic production. With their corn inventories being depleted, they are being forced to source more imports. This is bad news for U.S. livestock producers as this demand is and will likely compete with U.S. domestic corn needs, supporting prices for the coming years.

Dairy farming in the Keystone State Weaver family has been farming in Pennsylvania for 10 generations By Jerry Nelson

NEW HOLLAND, Pa. – It is remarkable for a business to continue within the same family across a few successive generations. Based on this metric, the dairy farm that is operated by the Weaver family has been wildly successful. Eric Weaver is the 10th generation to operate his family’s dairy farm, which is located in the southern portion of
Pennsylvania. In addition to dairy farming, Weaver has been highlighting his family’s multigenerational achievement with a YouTube channel called 10th Generation Dairyman. “Our ancestors were four Swiss-German brothers who emigrated to the American colonies in the early 1700s,” Weaver said. “In 1718, the

brothers pooled their resources and purchased 1,000 acres of land. Our family still has the original deed that was written on sheepskin and was signed by William Penn. The house that I’m living in was built about 1770.” The 1,000 acres were eventually split up between the four brothers. Weaver and his family are operating a 200-cow Holstein dairy that is situated on 250 acres that had been carved out of the original 1,000-acre tract. Weaver farms in partnership with his parents, Dennis and Karen.
“Dad remains very much a part of running our farm, and Mom takes care of the farm’s bookkeeping,” Weaver said. His sisters, Chelsea and Cassidy, help when needed. His brother, Ethan, works off the farm as a welder. And, his wife, Emily, is employed as a nurse and also stays busy with their 1-year-old daughter, Evelyn. The Weavers raise corn for silage, alfalfa and a few acres of soybeans. They purchase most of the grain that their herd needs and plant rye or triticale as fall cover crops. The family supplies most of their farm’s
labor with help from one fulltime hired man and a few parttime employees. “We are pretty much landlocked by surrounding farms and acreages, so we can’t expand,” Weaver said. “We are constantly striving to improve our land and our dairy herd. Our goal is to enhance cow comfort and increase their longevity. We have been pretty aggressive about using genomics to accelerate our herd’s genetic improvement.” The Weavers use sexed semen to service the top half of their heifers. that are in their second lactation or more are bred to beef sires. In the 1950s, Weaver’s grandfather, John Weaver, bottled and delivered milk locally. Dennis eventually joined the 50-cow operation and expanded it to 130 head that were milked in a tiestall barn. In 2004, the Weaver family built a 200-cow freestall facility that features a double-14 swing milking parlor. Their freestalls are bedded with sawdust. Their loang barn features a slotted oor with a manure pit underneath. The pit can hold up to six months’ worth of manure. “All I ever wanted to do was farm, so I went to work for Dad right after I nished high school,” Weaver said. Weaver got the idea for starting his own video channel from watching other farmers who were posting regularly on YouTube. “I really like the Millennial Farmer channel and thought that I could do something similar,” Weaver said. “I gured that my channel would be interesting because I do all sorts of different tasks on our dairy farm. My goal was to educate the public by showing them the realities of everyday life on a dairy.” On Nov. 30, 2018, Weaver took the plunge and launched his 10th Generation Dairyman channel on YouTube. The channel has since garnered more than 282,000 subscribers and has racked up more than 50 million views. “I just shoot video of whatever we might be doing on any particular day,” Weaver said. “Every day on a dairy farm is different, so every video is different.” Weaver’s YouTube channel has a
wide variety of subscribers. “A number of my channel subscribers are dairy farmers, but many others are city people,” Weaver said. “I try to make my videos easy to understand for everyone. I have gotten a lot of positive feedback from my postings. People like to see the reality of how a dairy farm operates. Many of them didn’t realize how complicated dairy farming is and how much work is involved.” Weaver’s videos include such seemingly mundane things as doing morning chores, chopping silage, planting corn, cleaning barns, milking cows and mixing a total mixed ration for their cattle. “We show everything that goes on, even when things don’t go exactly as planned,” Weaver said. “But that’s life on a dairy farm.” It takes a good amount of time for Weaver to stitch and edit his videos prior to posting them. Most of his video footage is captured with mounted and hand-held cameras, but he also makes use of a drone. “It takes me a couple of hours at the end of the day to edit each video,” Weaver said. “I gure that it takes about 10 minutes of editing for each minute of video that gets posted to my channel.” As word spreads about his YouTube presence, Weaver’s 10th Generation Dairyman channel continues to add subscribers and receive positive comments. “I am enjoying making my videos more and more,” Weaver said. “I don’t think I will stop posting them anytime soon.”

How will dairy fare with newly elected ofcials? Bleiberg talks about Congress shake ups during ISDA virtual meeting By Danna Sabolik

ANKENY, Iowa – The Iowa State Dairy Association’s annual meeting took to a virtual platform. The meeting took place Dec. 4 with no registration fee and allowed attendees to tune in from their kitchen table. Paul Bleiberg, senior director of government relations at National Milk Producer’s Federation, provided his initial insights on how results of the election will impact key dairy industry priorities such as labor, trade and future relief related to the coronavirus pandemic. “Both the Republican Senate and the Democratic House are more closely divided than they were before,” said Bleiberg, ceding not every race is ofcially complete. “It’s going to require bipartisanship to get anything done. I really believe COVID will factor into policy discussion.” Agriculture policy outlook is likely going to take a back seat at a federal level. However, along with the acceptance of a new COVID-19 bill, there will probably be funding available for farmers. “The most likely thing to affect agriculture in the next relief bill is probably providing money for the department of ag,” Bleiberg said. “The political parties seem to be at odds on many topics, but ag policy is some of the least controversial.” Bleiberg speculated potential improvements to Dairy Margin Coverage. For dairy, one of the most pressing policy changes was allowing low-fat avored milk back in schools as part of a nutrition bill. The current administration has a rule to allow for this at present, but supporters are hoping to include it in a bill for a tighter hold. As far as trade, the trade agenda to be put forth by President-elect Joe Biden will look different from President Donald Trump’s trade agenda. “(The Biden administration) will likely favor multi-lateral trade agreements involving multiple

different countries, not bi-lateral trade agreements, expected on the committee as well. Rep. WOOD LAKE, Minn. – Cole Remiger, now 14, remembers showing his giveaway calf for the rst time in 2018 at the Lyon County Fair. The calf, nicknamed Possum, was the rst registered animal on the farm, and the rst one Cole owned. “It was a pretty fun experience,” said Cole Remiger, son of Becky and Pat Remiger. Cole won the calf in the Dairy Star’s annual Great Christmas Giveaway in 2017 and went home with Newalta Light My Fire 9945, who joined his family’s herd of 120 cows near Wood Lake. “He was going to take her to the (Lyon) County fair the next summer,” Becky said. “When we were trying to break her to lead, she would at out refuse. She would fall over and just lay there. It took forever. She would not walk. We tried everything. She would just dig in, fall over and then just lay there so we nicknamed her Possum.” Eventually, they were able to make her comfortable with the halter, and Cole showed her at the Lyon County Fair
twice – in 2018 as a fall calf, and in 2019 as a fall yearling. As a yearling, Possum earned Cole a trip to the state fair, but Cole ended up taking another animal. “She was a very pretty heifer,” Cole said. “When I brought her (to the fair) the second time, she still remembered all her training so I didn’t have to break her in again.” Now 3 years old, Possum’s biggest struggle has been reproduction. “To get her bred the rst time, we bred her numerous times,” Becky said. “We ended up using a red polled (beef) bull onsite we use as a clean-up bull. She nally stuck so she had her rst calf in November of 2019.” Currently, the family is waiting to conrm if she is pregnant. “She’s been a hard one to get bred back,” Becky said. “She hasn’t had any major health issues, but she’s denitely a taller, lankier cow than the rest of ours are. So far, she’s been a decent milker.” Becky used to do all the vet checks on the farm and

helping keep the records. As for Possum, her heifer calf was a cross beef animal and nished out as a beef animal. “We were bummed she’s a hard breeder,” Becky said. “We were hoping to get a heifer out of her we could keep showing.” Cole had input on the bull she would be bred to, to make a
nice show animal, but Possum was not interested. This was a divert from the typical genetics the farm considers, which are more production-based. “She’s a good cow to have in the herd,” Cole said. Similarly, in 2016 Jonathon Job was the lucky winner of Turn to CHRISTMAS | Page 19

Jonathon’s parents, David and Alice Job, milk 55 cows near Freeport. “She’s not exceptionally big or anything, but she looks like the type of animal that could last a long time,â€? David said. “When she was growing up, we treated her as a pet. She would eat feed out of our hand.â€? Jamaica is 4 years old and has had two heifer calves. “We lost both calves due to pneumonia problems so I’m still trying to get more out of her yet,â€? David said. Her personality leaves something to be desired as well. “She has an attitude problem,â€? David said. “The ďƒžrst year we milked her she was ďƒžne, but the second year we milked her, she likes to throw feed up against the wall. Then, it sticks to the wall and makes a mess on the wall and window. We just put up with it because we want to get a few more calves out of her and see what we can get.â€? As far as production, she keeps up with the rest of the herd. “She looks like the type of animal that could last a long time so I’m hoping to get a few more out of her and keep them alive just to see what they can do,â€? Job said.

He is likely to continue serving on the ag committee and will likely return to the post he vacated two years ago as head of the judiciary committee, as he is termlimited out of the ďƒžnance committee. “While I’m not overly optimistic on the ag-labor issue, any work that would go through on the ag labor issue would go through Grassley’s committee,â€? Bleiberg said. In contrast, the U.S. House delegation is changing signiďƒžcantly with three of four members being fresh. Iowa’s 1st District will be represented by Rep. Ashley Hinson who defeated Rep. Abby Finkenauer. Hinson is interested in serving on House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. One of the country’s most-contested races is in southeast Iowa, where Rep. Mariannette MillerMeeks likely defeated Rep. Rita Hart by as little as six votes in the 2nd District. Moving west to Iowa’s 3rd District, Rep. Cindy Axne won another term and will be the most senior member of the house delegation on her second term. Rose-Maar Dairy thanks Iowa school with Community Care gift

GARNAVILLO, Iowa – Each staff member at Clayton Ridge Elementary School in Garnavillo went home with a pound of butter and a cheese stick Dec. 4 thanks to an initiative pulled together by the Wilson and Troester families at Rose-Maar Dairy. The product, provided by the families’ cooperative, Associated Milk Producers Inc., was an added feature of a Community Care package presented to winners of a drawing at the school. The Community Care program is a Midwest Dairy extension of the checkoff’s national partnership with Subway sandwich shops. Across the organization’s 10 states, dairy farmers were offered a chance to present care packages to people in their community considered to be heroes. The packages included six $15 Subway gift cards, eight Undeniably Dairy stocking caps and four blankets carrying the same theme. Rose-Maar Dairy is a partnership of Mark and Rondee Troester; their daughter and son-in-law, David and Anna Wilson and their son, Lewis; and their son and daughter-in-law, Amos and Tina Troester, and their daughter, June. It was one of 34 Iowa dairies who applied for and received the Community Care package for presentation to local heroes. Another 119 were received and then presented by dairy farmers in Minnesota, Illinois, North Dakota and South Dakota. Anna Wilson said she saw a need to connect students to dairy farmers, so her family chose the school she attended, and at which her mother taught, as recipients. “We wanted to honor the teachers and students at

The Community Care program was offered to the organization’s 10-state region’s dairy farmers earlier this fall through a direct mail campaign and online promotion. Midwest Dairy provided ideas on how families could honor community heroes like veterans, school personnel, health providers and law enforcement by presenting a care package. “It was a true joy ‌ to see our farmers take such initiative to come up with creative ways to take part,â€? said GarciaSilva. “To get to see and read the stories about how the farmers used these items to show how much dairy cares has been a really bright spot during these COVID times.â€? The dairies participating pursued a variety of local efforts, including: – Hilltop Acres near Calmar, Iowa, honored volunteer ďƒžreďƒžghters. – Nosbush Dairy, Fairfax, Minnesota, gifted the package to school lunch personnel. – Cindy Heuer, Howard Lake, Minnesota, chose three families who contribute to their community. – Galen and Sandy Fick, Boyden, Iowa, provided a package to staff working the COVID-19 drive-thru site at Sioux Center Health. – Michael Dairy, Centralia, Illinois, worked with Caritas Family Solutions

MDI will host farm couple retreats
The Minnesota Dairy Initiative (MDI) will be hosting two farm couple retreats that will be available to dairy farmers across the state of Minnesota. These farm couple retreats will also be open for other farming entity types. The dates and locations of the farm couple retreats are February 5-6, 2021 in Alexandria, MN at the Holiday Inn (5637 Highway 29 South Alexandria, MN 56308) and February 12-13, 2021 in Rochester at the Hampton Inn & Suites (2870 59th St NW, Rochester, MN 55901). The purpose of the retreat is to have couples come together to enjoy a mini vacation away from the farm with each other. The focuses of the retreat will include communication with your partner, communication with family, relationship building, handling stress, managing personalities, problem solving, action planning, and learning about additional resources. The retreat will also include opportunities to network with other farming couples, short lecture, group activities, and partner exercises. Monica Kramer McConkey, Rural Mental Health Specialist with MDA will be presenting and facilitating the retreat. Emily Krekelberg, University of Minnesota Farm Safety and Health Extension Educator, and Jim Salfer, University of Minnesota Extension Educator Dairy, will also be presenting. Farm couple retreats are limited to the ďƒžrst ten couples that sign up per location. All lodging, meals, refreshments, and materials are included in registration. Registrations are being covered by the Minnesota Dairy Initiative and other business and organization sponsorships. Soil Management Summit moves online, Dec. 15-16
Like many annual events, this year’s Soil Management Summit (SMS), formerly known as the Conservation Tillage Conference or CTC, has had to make the transition from in-person to online. The SMS planning committee wants to ensure the health and wellbeing of participants, vendors, and everyone else involved in the summit’s production while maintaining the high standard of programmatic content the event has provided over the years. As the COVID-19 situation has evolved, the committee made the decision that this event will be offered online only. The Soil Management Summit (SMS) emphasizes proven farmer experience and applied science. Straight from the ďƒželds, learn how heavier, colder soils aren’t necessarily the challenge they’re made out to be. Hear from long-time no-till, reduced tillage and cover crop farmers as they share their experiences, so you can be spared the same hard-learned lessons. Some of this year’s topics include tillage erosion, soil organic matter and water dynamics, and the conference staple - a panel of farmers sharing their own personal experiences with soil management. Kicking off the event is J. Gordon Arbuckle, a professor of sociology from Iowa State University whose research helps stakeholders maintain or enhance long-term agricultural productivity while also improving social and environmental outcomes of agriculture. His keynote talk on December 15 will explore the sociology of soil management. While this year’s format may be a little different, organizers hope people embrace the change and join online Dec. 15-16. “We’ll still deliver a high-value learning and networking experience for our attendees while emphasizing proven farmer experience and applied science,â€? said committee chair Jodi DeJong Hughes. When is a banana ripe and ready? This is one of our running arguments. Mark likes a slightly green skinned, rm banana to eat on his way out to do morning chores. I wait for them to turn black and mushy. Mark calls these rotten, and I call them ready to bake. For me, Christmas time and bananas go hand in hand. As a little kid, Mom would bake banana bread in empty soup cans as gifts for teachers and older neighbors. Sealing up the cylinder loaf of sweet bread in plastic wrap and nishing it off by wrapping it up in tin foil topped with a bow. They looked like presents ready to go under the tree. Today, I bake banana bread gifts in mini loaf pans. I haven’t used soup cans in years, but the memory of the circular bread brings a smile to my face of holidays in the kitchen with my mom. Here is her recipe for banana bread and other family favorite banana recipes to use up all those rotten bananas. As a side note. I get a big box of bananas from a neighbor when they are overstocked. I wait for them to ripen and will then freeze three or six peeled, smashed bananas in a bag. Measured and ready to bake with at a later date.

1/3 cup buttermilk 1 1/4 cups mashed bananas (three bananas) Beat on medium speed for 3 minutes. Add 1/3 cup buttermilk 1/2 cup unbeaten eggs (2 large eggs) Beat two more minutes. Pour into greased and oured pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes for layers or 45 minutes for 9x13. Frosting 3 tablespoons our 1 cup milk Cook until a paste. Cool. Beat 2-4 minutes till creamy: 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup Crisco and 1/2 cup butter. Continue beating. Slowly add cooked mixture. Add avoring or color. Continue beating until uffy. Makes a big batch of frosting. I spread extra frosting on graham crackers to make my own cookie sandwich. Banana cream cheesecake bars 3 cups Nilla Wafer crumbs 1/2 cup butter, melted 1 pint heavy whipping cream 3/4 cup sugar 3 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened 2 packages instant banana cream pudding Extra whipped cream and sliced bananas for garnish Crush box Nilla Wafers. Mix with melted butter. Press in bottom of 8-by8 pan lined with parchment paper. In a chilled bowl, beat whipped cream and sugar until stiff peaks form. Set aside. In a different bowl, beat three packages of cream cheese until smooth. Add two
packages of instant pudding. Mix well. Fold in whipped cream. Scoop over wafers and evenly spread. Refrigerate eight hours or overnight. Lift out of pan by paper. Cut into nine squares. Garnish with dollop of whipped cream and slice of banana. Make sure to dip banana slices in lemon juice to prevent from browning. Blueberry banana bread 2 cups four 6 tablespoons butter, hard 1 tablespoon baking powder 3/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup milk 1 egg 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup quick cooking oats 3/4 cup chopped walnuts 1 cup mashed bananas 1 cup fresh/frozen blueberries Mix together dry ingredients. Cut in butter until coarse crumbs. Stir in walnuts. In small bowl, mix milk, vanilla and egg until blended. Stir in bananas and blueberries. Add to dry mixture. Stir until just moist. Pour into greased and oured loaf pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 15 minutes. I double this recipe so I can make two loaves. Freezes great. Natalie, Mark and his brother Al, farm together near Rice, Minn. They milk 100 registered Holsteins under the RALMA prex. Fluffy peanut butter pie 1 graham cracker pie crust 3 tablespoons lemon juice concentrate 8 ounces softened cream cheese 1 teaspoon vanilla
14 ounces sweetened condensed milk 1 cup whipping cream 3/4 cup peanut butter Chocolate syrup to garnish
In a large bowl, beat cream cheese until uffy. Beat in the condensed milk and peanut butter until smooth. Stir in lemon juice and vanilla. Whip up the whipping cream in a separate bowl and then fold those two together. Put all of this into the prepared graham cracker crust. You can use store bought or crush graham crackers, just add melted butter and then pat into pan. Drizzle chocolate syrup over the top and refrigerate.

Pork loin dry rub ¼ cup paprika 2 Tablespoons brown sugar 2 Tablespoons salt 2 Tablespoons garlic powder 1 Tablespoon black pepper 1 Tablespoon chili powder
1 Tablespoon red pepper 1 Tablespoon onion powder 1 Tablespoon dried chipotle chili powder 1 ½ teaspoon ground cumin 1 ½ teaspoon dry mustard
Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Rub on pork loin. Cook pork at 300 degrees in oven or grill for several hours until done, ipping pork once. When done, slice into thin slices and put into crockpot on warm or low with a can of chicken broth. Add water if top pieces of pork start getting dry.

Crock pot mac and cheese 16-ounce box of elbow macaroni 4 cups whole milk 16 ounces of shredded cheese, any kind 1/2 cup of grated parmesan
4 ounces of room temperature cream cheese 8 ounces of sour cream Salt, pepper, garlic salt
Spray crock pot with cooking spray and cook macaroni noodles until done. Add macaroni to slow cooker, and add milk, shredded cheeses, grated parmesan and seasonings. Turn slow cooker to low and cook for 1 hour stirring occasionally. Cut the cream cheese into cubes and stir in cream cheese and sour cream into slow cooker until cream cheese starts to melt. Cook on low for additional 20-30 minutes or until hot and creamy. Serve as is or with crumbles on top.
