North Dakota dairyman receives prestigious award Holle honored for years of dairy promotion efforts

MANDAN, N.D. – Dairyman Kenton Holle has been named the 2021 recipient of the prestigious Richard E. Lyng Award.

The award, which recognized Holle for his many years of dairy promotion efforts, was given to him at the joint annual meeting of the National Dairy Promotion and Research Board (NDB), National Milk Producers Federation and the United Dairy Industry Association held in mid-November in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“This award celebrates farmers

who have shown a long-standing commitment and dedication to dairy promotion,” said Alex Peterson, Missouri dairy farmer and chair of the NDB. “Kenton exemplies this leadership with a more-than-15-year commitment to advancing farmer priorities nationally, regionally and locally.”

Holle served as chair of the NDB in 2013-2014. As chair, he oversaw the evolution of the national program from generic image advertising to helping grow sales and trust in dairy by working with and through the industry.

“Kenton did a masterful job in sharing with other farmers why the transition to partnership was so valuable to the checkoff,” Peterson said.

The Richard E. Lyng Award honors leaders who have made a signicant contribution to dairy promotion that benets the entire industry.

Holle and his wife, Bobby Jo, are third-generation dairy farmers.

The Holles have three sons, Andrew, Michael and James.

Andrew and his wife, Jennifer, have four children, Dawson, Isabell, Drew and Devin. Andrew and Jennifer are partners in the Holle family dairy operation. Northern Lights Dairy is home to 800 Holstein cows milked in a rotary parlor. Andrew and Jennifer are expanding the dairy facilities by adding a new freestall barn to house pre-fresh and post-fresh animals.

Michael and his wife, Amber, have three daughters, Ella, Emma and Evelyn. Michael operates a custom silage chopping business that serves cattle feeders and dairy producers in North Dakota and Montana.

James and his wife, Wendy, have two daughters, Charlotte and Maggie.

James and Wendy live in Hutchinson, Minnesota, where James works as a service technician for Leedstone Inc. “I think it’s wonderful that all three of our sons have stayed involved with the dairy industry,” Holle said. “They could have done anything they wanted, but they decided to remain connected to their roots in agriculture.”

The Holle family has a deep tradition of dairy promotion and working with others toward a common goal.

“I grew up in a family where my parents were very conscious of the world,” Holle said. “Dad was proud of being a farmer. He taught me the pride and the responsibility of being a dairy farmer and the importance of being responsible to the land and to the animals.”

Holle’s father was forward thinking. He built a freestall barn and herringbone milking parlor facility in 1964. He began to sell milk to the Land O’Lakes cooperative in the late 1960s.

“Dad was born in 1917, so he remembered the Great Depression,” Holle said. “He saw what cooperatives and other farm organizations can do for farmers. He often told me that the work that we do off the farm is just as important as the work that we do on the farm. We can’t just take for granted that things will be okay.”

Holle took his father’s lessons to heart. He spent several years as a Land O’Lakes district board member.

In 2005, Holle took a position on the board of the North Dakota division of Midwest Dairy. In 2008, he was nominated to serve on the National Dairy Board.

“I was overwhelmed by all the activity I witnessed at the National Dairy Board,” Holle said. “I learned a lot when I served on the board. I was fascinated by the quality of the staff that’s working for us dairy farmers.

It speaks to the leadership at the local and national level. The dairy checkoff is the gold standard of farm checkoff programs.”

Holle was also impressed by the efforts put forth by the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy.

“The Dairy Innovation Center brings all facets of the industry together to work for dairy farmers,” Holle said. “Without their vision, we would have a disparate set of standards for each retailer or restaurant chain. The Innovation Center is helping our dairy farmers tell their story.”

Holle was surprised to learn he was being honored with the Richard E. Lyng Award.

“My friend, Allen Merrill, called and gave me the news,” Holle said.

Merrill is chairman of Midwest Dairy.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Holle said.

“It was really unexpected and brought me a great deal of joy. I have served on boards with some of the previous recipients. It’s nice to belong to a fellowship of people who make every last drop count.”

In addition to serving on dairy promotion boards, Holle and his family have actively promoted dairy in their local community for many years.

“We began to host tours of our dairy farm in 2005,” Holle said. “One of the most successful events has been breakfast on the farm, which is traditionally held in June. Several thousand people would come out to our farm for the event. Local businesses also got involved, including our Domino’s Pizza restaurant. The event included booths that showcased the works of North Dakota artisans and our local volunteer re department brought along an interactive display for kids. There would also be a climbing wall and inatables for kids to enjoy.

Breakfast on the farm is a fun day for the entire family.”

Receiving the Richard E. Lyng Award will enable Holle to pay it forward.

“The NDB will contribute $2,500 in my name to North Dakota State University’s College of Human Sciences and Education,” Holle said.

“We hope that the scholarship goes to somebody who has a dairy background. … I have always been a strong supporter of FFA and higher education, so this scholarship is a feather in the cap.

There are tremendous opportunities in agriculture for our young people,” he said.

Pain mitigation important tool to raising happier, healthier calves Pertzborn discusses practices at PDPW Calf Care Connection

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Dr. Scott Pertzborn, a veterinarian with Lodi Veterinary Care, was on hand at the Professional Dairy Producers Calf Care Connection Oct. 27 in Eau Claire to share pain mitigation strategies for calves.

“When I rst started out, we did a lot of dehorning and castrating on older animals,” Pertzborn said. “I would take the chute out to the farm, and maybe we did it twice a year. It was a big, messy situation, and we did not think about pain control back then. But things are changing now for the better.”

Current industry practices are catching up with consumer concerns which brings pain mitigation to the forefront. Pain mitigation is included in the National Dairy Farmers Assuring Responsible Management 4.0 program guidelines.

“I would like to think that we know calves experience pain, and we know it is easier on the humans when we use pain control too,” Pertzborn said. “It is better for our bottom lines too. There are studies that show calves gain better when we use pain control and stay healthier.”

The new FARM 4.0 guidelines specify that the practice of disbudding calves should be done prior to 8 weeks of age.

“The sooner the better for dehorning,” Pertzborn said. “I encourage people to do it on day No. 1.

After you feed (calves) the colostrum,

they are kind of sleepy and not moving much. That is a good time to take advantage and paste the horn buds.

When calves are born, the horn bud is not attached to the bone, but if you wait too long, the bone grows into that horn.”

While pain mitigation is becoming increasingly important, one obstacle facing dairy producers is the lack of approved pain control drugs for use in calves. Instead, dairy farmers must work with their veterinarians to establish protocols for pain control medications and become comfortable with the administration of those medications.

When it comes to pain mitigation for calves during dehorning, Pertzborn recommends taking a two-pronged approach. First, use a local anesthetic such as lidocaine that is injected.

Then, use a systemic analgesic either given orally (meloxicam) or poured on (Banamine Transdermal).

Pertzborn said the timing between the administration of pain medication and carrying out the procedure is important.

“When the dentist gives you a shot of lidocaine, does he start drilling right away? No, it takes a little while to take effect,” Pertzborn said. “That is one of the cons; it takes a little while.”

Pertzborn said producers should administer pain medication to all the calves needing to be dehorned and then preferably wait half an hour before beginning the dehorning work.

Pertzborn said using lidocaine for pain mitigation prior to procedures

such as dehorning or castrating is inexpensive and makes the procedure less stressful for both the animal and for the people treating the animal.

Pertzborn said the two-pronged approach to pain mitigation works well because the effects of the local anesthetic only last for a couple hours before wearing off, leaving the calf dealing with pain after the procedure.

But, by administering the oral or transdermal pain medication at the time of the procedure, the medicine can take affect before the lidocaine wears off.

“Meloxicam, for example, is labeled for treating arthritis pain in humans,” Pertzborn said. “But there has been enough research conducted to know it is an excellent drug to use on calves for pain relief. It has a 21-day meat withhold, which is very important, especially with an extra-label usage.”

Pertzborn emphasized working with a veterinarian to ensure proper usage and compliance with any withholding times, particularly with extra-label drug usage.

“Calves, and our dairy cattle in general, to me are just beautiful animals,” Pertzborn said. “They are special gifts to us to use. They are such productive animals, and we are asked to be their caretakers. I think that is a pretty honorable position to be in. The work dairy farmers do, taking care of calves, is just so important. These are wonderful animals, and they deserve to be cared for.”

Strategic decision-making helps Evergreen Acres reach 30% Preg Rate goal

The F360 Guarantee promises a 1-3% increase in a dairy’s Rolling Herd Average Pregnancy Rate in 12-months. Fourth-generation farmer Megan Hill operates the 4,000-cow dairy with her family. She says that fertility has always been a big focus for them. Before Parnell, Hill recalls her family always striving to hit specific fertility-related goals. She says they have a great in-house breeding team, but they weren’t hitting their idealized numbers for things like pregnancy rate in the past couple of years.

“Being on the F360 Guarantee and having the (Fertility 360 Report) makes us sit down and look at the numbers and other things that are affecting (reproductive performance) and what we can do better,” she says.

Hill said their cows are bred to either sexed or beef semen. One of the consequences of falling short in fertility was not keeping replacement heifers and a new revenue venture for the dairy. “Previously, we were always selling (beef crosses) as bottle babies and just taking that stress away. But (after the F360 Guarantee), we decided to keep all of them,” she explains. “It’s opened up another window for us. We now have a complete beef operation from the bottle until they get on the truck.”

A large part of the Guarantee revolves around operational analysis derived through the Fertility 360 Report. It requires the entire farm and veterinary team to take a strategic, deep look inside herd management and determine which areas are holding them back. Some of that, Hill notes, meant making some changes according to this guidance provided by the veterinarian.

“Something that we changed here was voluntary waiting period,” says Hill. “We’re waiting longer.”

Something else that helped them on their journey was enhancing heat detection to help them hit an established 30% pregnancy rate goal. For Evergreen Acres, this meant setting up new on-farm protocols so that heats were properly documented and suitable for breeding when cows were walked.

Another aspect they considered was the cases of overcrowding in various facilities. That was something Hill says Steve Baldwin of Freeport Veterinary Service, the herd’s veterinarian, recognized and helped them adjust while working with Rob Oster, the Parnell Territory Manager for the area.

“We had space by our dry cows that we fixed up and put some dry cows there to try and give them more room,” Hill explains. “For fresh cows, it was the same thing, we tried to keep them not as crowded, and it’s gotten better.”

Besides helping them reach their fertility goals, Hill also attributes such changes to dramatically reduce their transition-related diseases such as retained placentas (RP), ketosis, and displaced abomasums (DA) by 50%.

Working with Parnell has helped Evergreen Acres develop a roadmap for ongoing success, even after the conclusion of the F360 Guarantee.

Hill says what she especially likes is having a second set of eyes and a new perspective. “I like being pulled back and looking at the bigger picture. We were trying to make it work the way things were,” she says. “(Steve) was honest, and we pulled the plug and made those changes, figured out the right things to do for our farm, and are happy that we did it.”

She concludes that the program is worthwhile, noting that to improve requires making changes, and Parnell was able to help them identify what those needed to be.

Master of the hoof Gransee wraps up long career as trimmer

EVANSVILLE, Wis. – After nearly 40 years of trimming hooves, Chris Gransee put his tools away after trimming his last cow Sept. 9.

Highly regarded by an extensive list of long-time clients, Gransee’s services will likely be missed by many. He worked on prestigious herds well known in the show circuit and

within registered breeder circles while building lifelong friendships with those for whom he worked.

“I’ve had the privilege of working on some of the nest cows and herds in southern Wisconsin and beyond,” said Gransee, who lives near Evansville.

“But the people were the best part of this job, without a doubt. The farmers I trimmed for were not just customers – all of them became friends as well.

They welcomed me into their homes for lunch, and I watched their kids grow up into adults.”

Renowned for his impeccable work as a bovine podiatrist, people entrusted their best cattle to Gransee’s care.

Gransee’s newest venture, Big Guy Woodworking and Sawmill, is keeping the former hoof trimmer busy in reƟrement. began by using a box with hammer and chisel before switching to a tilt table and electric grinder in 2000.

“When I rst started out, I was nervous as hell working on cows I had heard and read about,” Gransee said. “Laverne Meske, a legend in the industry, taught me how to trim.

There were no trimming schools back then. I learned as I went and was still learning up to the last day I trimmed.

No matter what you do for a living, there’s something new to learn every single day.”

After high school, Gransee played one year of Division II college football for the University of Northern Iowa. The 6-foot-4-inch, 207-pound defensive end had dreams of becoming an architect, but the school did not offer industrial design.

“I was going to transfer to the University of Milwaukee, but I left college to start working with my dad instead,” Gransee said.

Following in his father’s footsteps, the self-described farm kid worked on a dairy farm for 3.5 years while also tting cattle for shows and sales before moving to hoof trimming. Believing every cow deserves to feel better and be given a nice-looking foot, Gransee said he always wanted a cow walking out better than she walked in.

“I’m not a cookie-cutter trimmer, and I always worried about the shape of the foot,” Gransee said. “Every cow has her own foot and needs to be trimmed as an individual.”

Dedicated to top-notch workmanship, Gransee said he never let a problem with the hoof get the best of him.

“In my world, good enough is not good enough,” he said. “That means you gave up. The most cows I trimmed

in a day was 33, and I tried my darndest to only do one farm per day.”

Bob Cramer Jr., who milks 50 cows near Juda, met Gransee at the age of 13.

Gransee trimmed for Cramer’s dad, and Cramer chose to use Gransee’s services as well when he started farming.

“I can’t say enough good things about Chris and his work,” Cramer said. “He was very good and very meticulous and always tried to do the best that could possibly be done. He cared. He was always about the cow and what was best for her. Even more so, he was about the people he worked with. He became part of the family.”

Pain forced Gransee to retire early.

After years of physically taxing labor, he was suffering from spine and hip issues and could hardly make it through a day’s work. He said leaving his hoof trimming career behind was not an easy decision to make and one that did not become ofcial until Nov. 16.

“I wanted to slow down rather than stop trimming altogether, but my body told me otherwise,” Gransee said. “I was hoping to make it to 40 years, but I had to stop trimming two months short of 38 years on the job.”

Beloved by his customers, many people are sad to see Gransee go, recognizing he leaves big shoes to ll.

“Chris did a great job trimming for us,” said Mark Towns, who milks about 500 cows near Evansville. “I’m guessing he extended the life of Lindy’s dam because he kept her trimmed up good. We’re disappointed to lose him, but we wish him well. He’s a really good guy.”

A father gure and role model to many, Gransee is the kind of guy people look up to.

“A customer once told me, ‘You have no clue how much you’ve impacted peoples’ lives,’” Gransee said.

“But I was just doing my job.”

In addition to trimming hooves, Gransee served as a 4-H dairy leader and basketball coach. Last year he became an ordained minister. Gransee and his wife, Colleen, met in high school and have three children and ve grandchildren.

“These kids are so special to me,” Gransee said.

“They’re what life’s all about.”

Although retired from trimming, Gransee is not done working. His gift for woodworking has led him to a new career and the creation of a new business, Big Guy Woodworking and Sawmill. Transferring his talents from hooves to custom woodworking, Gransee is now designing and making picture frames, tables, benches and more.

“Woodworking is in my blood,” Gransee said.

came out here when I was 8 years old. I started out riding with Jayme while he was making hay.

How has working on the farm shaped your character? It has taught me how to work independently and problem solve. There are a lot of times on the farm where you have to think on your feet because things can change quickly.

Being able to meet different people like salesmen, representatives and the hoof trimmer has taught me a lot about the different aspects that go into farming.

Employer: Tell us your favorite experience of working with this youth. Seeing Ian grow. I can’t take all the credit; Ian has great parents. He thinks just like me and my son, Ryan. He knows how we think.

What qualities does your employee have that benet the farm? He is able to catch on quickly, he is willing to learn, and he gets things. Farming is a little different, and some people never quite get it. But, you can tell it clicks with Ian. He is willing to take the time to learn and go slow until he gets it right. I couldn’t say anything bad about him. He’s a quick learner, and he is very dedicated. He’s like a son to me when it comes to farming, and I would do anything for him. He is a good overall young man.

Youth: What are your responsibilities on the farm? I rst started with smaller stuff like mowing the lawn and washing tractor windows. As I got older and spent more time here, I have come to do

What do you love most about farm life? I like that you get to do something a little different every day. You’re not going to work at the same job over and over again. It’s constantly changing, and the risk to reward makes it even better. You have to be really passionate about it to make a successful outcome.

What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your employers? If you get along with your employers, then they are like a second family to you, and you can’t even call it work. I’d rather be out here working or doing projects with them than doing a lot of other things.

What are your future plans? My goal is to graduate and then go to technical school. I have been accepted into the business management program at Chippewa Valley Technical College.

I’m not sure what will happen beyond that.

“Expanding Farm Horizons: Early Career and Beginning Farmer Resources and Strategies” is a two-session workshop designed to share resources, encourage networking, and inspire planning to move forward with strategies to establish a plan for expanding a life in farming. In Clayton County, the program will be held on two consecutive weeks – December 13 and 20, 2021 at Keystone AEA 1400 N 2nd St Elkader.

A light supper is served at 5:30 p.m. and programming will be during 6 to 8 p.m. Presenting at this seminar is Melissa O’Rourke, Attorney and ISU Extension Farm and Business Management Field Specialist, along with other area professionals.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) and Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) will host two public sessions to explore ways to reduce the impacts of climate change through a Minnesota Clean Fuel Standard (CFS).

MnDOT and the MDA are engaging stakeholders and listening to the public as a key part of that process. The state’s goals through this process including identifying action steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector, create new jobs, attract new economic investments, and reduce air and water pollution in both urban and rural communities.
