Moser family’s Christmas wish: a barn full of cows Iowa dairy expanding herd, milking with robots

COLESBURG, Iowa – All the Moser family wants for Christmas is a barn full of cows.

The Clayton County farmers don’t need to fret about Santa arriving on time with a bag full of bovines. Indeed, the farm is bursting at the seams with dairy cows, heifers and calves.

As of early November, 93 Holsteins were being milked

by a pair of DeLaval VMS (Voluntary Milking System) robots. That left 37 or so heifers to freshen by Dec. 25, so the family’s Christmas wish could come true.

Todd Moser, his wife, Lynn, sons Kirk and Kohl, and daughter, Kendra, want the barn full so they can check off one more step as complete in the 900-acre operation’s move to robotic milking. Rather than try to get 120 cows accustomed to the computer-driven machines all in one fell swoop,

the Mosers opted to start with the 50 cows they milked in the old barn.

The Mosers’ main reason for robots was the long-term outlook for their dairy.

“There’s no way this farm is going to survive milking in a 40-stanchion barn,” Todd said.

“The next generation isn’t going to do it.”

The Mosers planned their herd expansion and new milking facility over two years ago.

Family members knew it was time to get the cows and themselves out of the one-story barn that dates to 1975.

“A parlor would have taken more space. And we’d still have to milk the cows ourselves,” Kirk said.

The Mosers don’t hire much labor, thanks partly to the robotic milkers.

The machines make it easier for family members to get the corn, hay and rye work done, and they also allow the Mosers to care for their 120 beef cows, plus a couple hundred Holstein steers.

Before they settled on the kind of barn they would build, the Mosers wanted to see different styles in action.

They visited farms as far away as central Iowa and Wisconsin.

“I wanted to see some barns that have been around awhile,” Todd said.

“What goes on when it’s 20 below zero?”

To gather answers, the Mosers toured barns in the cold and the heat.

At each place they picked features and ideas they liked, Lynn said.

For their 70- by 256-foot hybrid freestall barn, they voted for three rows of cows, drive-through feeding, rubbercovered alleyways and mattresses in the stalls. They also opted for automatic alley scrapers, curtain sidewalls, fans to help create tunnel ventilation and clear-span, wooden rafters and LED lights. Two more important features are 10 stalls designated for cows that will soon freshen and a one-stall parlor for the rst few milkings of heifers.

The dairy center also has a 24- by 60-foot front portion that houses an ofce, restroom and utility room.

To make room for the dairy center, the Mosers tore down a hog house and feed room, the chicken house that had 200 layers in it and a shed that housed 25 ewes.

Lynn admitted to missing the sheep.

“They’re the coolest animals in the world,” she said. “They don’t bite.

They don’t kick. If they run into you, they bounce off. Sheep means I have to be here every day. This barn (with its robotic milkers) allows me to visit my daughter, do girls’ day out and stuff that wasn’t as easy to do back then.”

Todd and Kirk echoed her sentiments, if not her exact words.

“We get up an hour later,” Kirk said. “At 7:30 or 8 o’clock in the morning, I’m not tired.”

The Mosers broke ground for their dairy center this past spring, held an open house in the new facility Aug. 20, moved the cows in the next morning and started milking Aug. 29. Their reason for waiting a week to begin milking was to give the cows time to relax in their new surroundings.

That included letting the cows learn how to navigate the smart gates that are integral to the barn’s guided-ow system. In a guided-ow barn, cows must have permission to travel to certain areas. The robotic milking system’s computer identies each animal by way of a radio frequency detection (RFD) tag in her ear.

In the Mosers’ barn, if a cow has permission to be milked, a gate opens and she enters the robot room. If she doesn’t have milking permission, a different gates opens and the cow saunters off to the feed alley.

Kirk explained how he can enter other cow information into the computer. For instance, if a cow should be bred, he can arrange for a gate to open so she will travel to a specic area.

The same can be done for things like vet checks, pregnancy checks and other cow procedures.

“Smart gates are the cheapest hired man you could ever have,” Kirk said.

Todd said the guided-ow system and smart gates helped guide the family’s decision toward this milking system. He said they did not want to sort and nd cows the rst thing in the morning. Instead, they wanted to do other things like feed calves and breed cows.

Kirk and Todd said the smart gates make their supply of pelleted feed last longer. That’s part of the Mosers’ plan to keep the daily operating cost of the robotic milking system as low as possible.

Much of the rst day was devoted to mapping udders.

“The roughest part was sleep deprivation that rst week,” Lynn said.

By the third week, things began to noticeably improve. Now, a few older cows still need to be prompted. But the Mosers said they have yet to sell a cow.

If one doesn’t adjust to the robots, they plan to dry her off and give her a fresh start later.

After three months of robotic milking, the Mosers said the daily milk average is at 70 pounds, up from 65 pounds in the old barn. The family expects production to climb, partly because the cows are being milked an average of 3.1 times a day.

The fat test has held steady at 3.8 percent, and the protein is at 3 percent.

The somatic cell count has dropped to 160,000 from 280,000.

But, Todd said, “I don’t care about any of the numbers right now. Let’s get the cows in here, keep them happy and keep them comfortable.”

Wells announces $40 million expansion Plans include adding two lines to ice cream production plant

LE MARS, Iowa – Wells Enterprises, Inc. recently announced it will be undergoing a $40 million expansion and upgrade at its northwestern Iowa ice cream manufacturing plant.

Wells Enterprises, Inc. is the parent company of the Blue Bunny brand. The company also manufactures Bomb Pop frozen confections and Weight Watchers ice cream novelties, along with private label product for numerous other companies. Ice cream and novelty products manufactured in the Le Mars plant can be found in all 50 states. Wells produces more than 150 million gallons of ice cream per year.

Wells spokeswoman Lesley Bartholomew said the expansion is due to rising demand for their products. “Due to our growing business of which our recent Blue Bunny brand relaunch has contributed, Wells is looking at adding two additional lines to the south ice cream plant,� Bartholomew said. “The plant currently contains 39 production lines. We continue to see increased sales in both novelties and packaged ice cream across the country, hence the potential need for these additional lines.

Wells will add approximately 80 full-time positions to support the growth.�

The expansion plan includes a 6,000 square foot addition to the west of the plant.

This added space will be used for ofďƒžces, an expanded break

room and additional lockers for employees. There are currently 2,271 employees on the payroll at Wells.

The Wells ice cream plant consumes some 20 truckloads of milk per day. Most of the milk comes from diaries located within a 75-mile radius of Le Mars. “Our demand for milk is likely to increase as we bring this new capacity online,� Bartholomew said.

Wells Enterprises can trace its roots back to 1913, when founder Fred H. Wells Jr. began delivering milk in Le Mars with a horse drawn wagon. Fred and his sons started making ice cream in the 1920s. They sold their products mostly to communities in northwestern Iowa.

Wells has grown steadily over the past century. It is currently the third largest ice cream maker in the United States, behind NestlĂŠ and Unilever. Wells remains a familyowned and family-managed company.

Le Mars mayor Dick Kirchoff is pleased with Wells’ latest expansion plans. “Wells has been a tremendous asset to Le Mars for 100 years,� Kirchoff said. “This new expansion is absolutely excellent news for our community.�

PDPW food, consumer panels share viewpoints on agriculture

MADISON, Wis. – Agriculture has many diverse voices in our modern world. Farmers had the opportunity to hear two of these key voices Oct. 25 while attending the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin (PDPW) Food and Policy Summit.

Four food company representatives and three consumers each spoke on respective panels, sharing their perspectives and roles within agriculture.

The food panel consisted of Deb Arcoleo, representing the Hershey Company; Kim Stackhouse-Lawson, representing JBS USA; Dr. Jennifer Walker, DVM, PhD, representing Dean Foods; and Goedhart Westers, representing Grassland Dairy Products, Inc. Stackhouse-Lawson started the discussion, telling those in attendance that food companies must remain customer and consumer focused to be successful. She said the decisions made at the farm level are a large factor in the success of her company in regards to product sales. Distributing product that aligns with the trust of consumers is a driving force in food company decisions, she said.

“Animal welfare is a huge risk for us,” Stackhouse-Lawson said. “It’s not just the consumer’s perception we have to worry about, it’s also their trust in production. We take a reputational risk in an inuential business.

Consumers’ trust in a brand can break in a matter of seconds, and when trust breaks around a brand, trust breaks for you, too.”

Arcoleo agreed and said food companies have limited control on agriculture’s image in the eyes of consumers.

“We have to listen to what consumers want or we go out of business.

The truth is, the facts don’t matter; it is very limited what one company can do to combat an image,” Arcoleo said.

Arcoleo added that consumers’ demand for information has grown beyond what producers, suppliers and food companies alike could have imagined. On the topic of food labelling, it is hard for food companies to provide the full spectrum of information consumers request.

“Since 2014, what people want to know about their food is just accelerating,” Arcoleo said. “Packaging is small; there’s not a lot of room for a lot of information. Packaging is not the place to provide information about farming practices.”

Transparency, for producers and food companies alike, is key. Walker said consumers are often seeking something they think they want without realizing the cost.

“It’s a social injustice; people want products produced in a certain way, but they are not willing to carry the cost associated with that,” Walker said.

As a milk processor, Westers said customer demands were a factor behind their decision to be rBST-free.

“As a company and an industry, rBST has been an issue ever since it was started,” Westers said. “Buyers have choices. If we wanted to be competitive, we had to go rBST-free because markets around us had already made the transition.”

The food company panel was soon followed by a panel of consumers.

Included on the consumer panel was Kristina Chapman, director of wellness strategies at the Kettle Moraine YMCA in West Bend, Wis.; Johanna Cook, a national cooking personality and host of Momma Cuisine; and Dr. Sarah Jedd, UW-Madison professor and researcher in rhetoric.

As a mother, Chapman said her consumer decisions are entirely kidfocused.

or dad is for our children,” Chapman said.

Jedd agreed with Chapman, adding that the concerns she has for food leads her to trust and rely on specic brands that she believed have more quality.

“I buy brands I think are higher quality,” Jedd said. “I only buy non-GMO foods and I only shop at Whole Foods. I am one of those consumers you as producers look for because I fall for labels hook, line and sinker.”

As a personality of inuence, Cook said the consumers she interacts with share the mindset of her fellow panelists.

“My mission is to get families making great everyday meals simply, affordably and elegantly,” Cook said. “At the end of the day, moms want to care for their family and do what is best for them within their budget.”

Chapman added that she does not believe quality comes with a higher sticker price.

“Quality food, in my mind, is in its simplest form. When I cook for my family, I try to incorporate three things in the meal that are in their purest

form if possible,” Chapman said.

While the food panel said their decisions as companies relied on the demand of the consumers, members of the consumer panel argued that knowledge is a two-way street. While Jedd said she wants

to know where her food comes from, she relies on brands to share that story.

“All I know is what the brand tells us,” Jedd said. “We purchase products from the sources that

Sometimes, consumers aren’t sure what they want, Chapman said.

“We wanted all of these options, so food grew faster and bigger to keep up with these demands,” Chapman said. “Suddenly we have all of these options and we look at the shelves wanting it back to how it was yesterday.”

Cook reminded the other panelists that brands have motives of their own, which is important to keep in mind when making purchases.

“The brand only tells you the brand’s story,” Cook said. “They want you to look at their product and think, ‘Everything is great. Buy our stuff.’

They’re targeting your emotional value.”

Chapman concluded by recommending farmers not only be willing to share their stories, but that they break it down to the consumers’ level.

“Keep it simple,” Chapman said. “Use language consumers will understand but also be willing to yield their questions and concerns.”

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am involved in the FFA chapter in St. Peter. I am serving as the treasurer this year. Within FFA I participate in the dairy cattle evaluation Career Development Event (CDE).

Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? It is only natural for me to be interested in FFA and dairy judging since I live on a dairy farm.

My future holds a variety of different things within FFA, but not much more in dairy judging since we went on a European judging trip this summer and competed at the National FFA Convention this fall.

Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/ organizations. My best experience dairy judging was having the chance to go to Europe where we got to judge cows and live with other farm families.

THE NEW CHAPTER IN LAGOON BOATS

THE CRAWLER!

The Nuhn Lagoon Crawler is an amphibious vehicle designed for agitating lagoons.

The wheels are able to drop down, giving the vehicle roughly 5 feet of ground clearance. The unit then drives itself into a lagoon, where it turns into an agitation boat.

When in the lagoon, the Lagoon Crawler is powered by a quad port, Nuhn Header Series manure pump. 10000+GPM volumes are used to maneuver the pontoon through the lagoon and agitate the solids from the bottom.

The Nuhn Lagoon Crawler does not need a priming system.

Landlords, farmers, agri-business professionals should make plans to attend one of the informative land rent meetings being held across Minnesota. These free meetings are being provided by the University of Minnesota Extension. Farm land rental rates have started to lower as corn and soybean prices continue lower in 2016. Determining a fair farm rent agreement is a challenge in today’s economy with current signicantly lower corn and soybeans prices in 2016 compared to recent record corn and soybean prices and record farm land values. Negotiating a fair rental agreement that satises the land owner and the farmer is a challenge. David Bau, Pauline Van Nurden, Gary Hachfeld and Nathan Hulinsky, Extension Educators in Ag Business Management, will provide several ways; by examples, factsheets and worksheets to determine a fair farm land rental rate for both parties. Topics covered at the meetings will include local historic and projected farmland rental rate trends, current farm land values and sales, a worksheet that will help determine a fair rental agreement. Register for the Midwest Dairy Day “Automatic Calf Feeders: Feeding the Next Generation” scheduled for Dec. 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Iowa’s Dairy Center located at 1527 Highway 150 S, Calmar. Following lunch, Courtney will introduce ventilation measurement and troubleshooting tools with a demonstration in the Dairy Center’s calf barn. The day will conclude with a tour of an automatic calf feeding barn at the Kevin and Gayleen Moeller’s farm near Ridgeway. The Moeller’s farm is currently housing six groups of calves in a cross-ventilated facility; utilizing automatic calf feeders and feeding pasteurized milk. University of Minnesota Extension will be hosting a 2nd series of Transitioning to Organic Workshops, Dec. 5-7, in Lamberton, St. Cloud, and Rochester, Minn. These free, one-day workshops are for both producers who are seeking more information about organic transitioning and certication, and farmers currently going through the process of transitioning to organic production. AMPI cheesemakers score two big wins AMPI Medium Cheddar, Parmesan named champions The cheesemakers of Associated Milk Producers Inc. (AMPI) made history at the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) Championship Cheese Contest.

Their entries were named champions in both the Cheddar and Italian divisions, with the Cheddar being named the overall best cheese in the competition. It is the rst time the two division honors were earned by the same co-op in a single year, according to contest ofcials.

Medium Cheddar made at AMPI’s plant in Blair, Wis., was named best of class in the highly competitive Cheddar division and recipient of the Chairman’s Plaque for the best overall entry. Best of class in the Italian division went to Parmesan made at AMPI’s Hoven, S.D., plant.

Making award-worthy cheese is the daily standard at AMPI, said Mark Frederixon, a Wisconsin Master Cheesemaker who manages the plant where the champion Cheddar was manufactured.

“We don’t make special cheese for contests. This is the quality of product we’re making every day,” he said.

USDA begins national agricultural conservation survey The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) is surveying 16,000 farmers and ranchers across the country through February 2017 about their conservation and production practices on cultivated and non-cultivated farmland. The results of the 2016 National Resources Inventory-Conservation Effects Assessment Project (NRI-CEAP) survey will further document on-farm conservation accomplishments and develop science-based solutions that help farmers and ranchers improve the environment.

“The survey will measure the environmental benets associated with installing and using conservation practices on agricultural land,” said NASS Administrator Hubert Hamer. “Responses to the survey can directly benet producers themselves by helping leaders focus on what producers need to install conservation practices that are best for their operations environmentally and nancially.”

Over the past several months, NASS contacted 25,000 farmers and ranchers to determine if their land meets the criteria to be included in the survey. Now, NASS representatives are contacting those with eligible agricultural land to schedule in-person interviews.

The survey asks for information on conservation practices installed, nutrients and pesticides applied, cropping history, irrigation, and grazing for the 2014-2016 production years. Those responding should expect that the survey will take about an hour to complete, depending upon the size and scope of the operation and conservation practices.

Having records on hand will help shorten the time needed to complete the questionnaire.

NASS conducts the NRI-CEAP survey under a cooperative agreement with the Natural Resources Conservation Service. NRI-CEAP results help determine the effectiveness of existing conservation practices and what resources farmers may need to further protect the soil, water and related resources in selected watersheds, and to document on-farm conservation accomplishments. The results guide USDA conservation policy and program development and help conservationists, farmers and ranchers more efciently and effectively conserve natural resources.

The privacy of all respondents is safeguarded, ensuring that no individual operation or producer can be identied, as required by Federal law. Additional information about CEAP is available at the Conservation Effects Assessment Project survey web page.
