Family, football, farming Four Utecht brothers part of EV-W team playing for state title

ST. NICHOLAS, Minn. – Friday nights this fall for the Utecht family have been busy.

Not only does the family have to do the regular chores that go with having a 50-cow dairy; they have to make the Eden Valley-Watkins High School football games. That’s because they have not one, or two, or three, but four boys on the team.

“It’s really cool and really busy. It made for an interesting parents night.

It’s really fun and neat to see them out there together supporting one another,” JJ said.

Every Friday night, Rick and his wife, JJ, see all four of their sons – Nathan, a senior; Mitchell, a sophomore; and Dylan and Derek, both freshman – with pads, spikes and in their uniforms on the sidelines under the lights for the Eagles football games.

“Its kind of cool to think about it,” said Dylan, one of the twins and the smallest of the four, weighing about 110 pounds. “They (my brothers) help me through stuff. They tell my what to do and what not to do.”

Nathan, a 6-foot-1 197-pound senior, starts both ways for EV-W. Mitchell scored his rst varsity touchdown this season and has played in half the Eagles’ games. He plays at the end of games, when the Eagles are enjoying big leads. Dylan and Derek dress and play sparingly, but enjoy the camaraderie of the team.

“I like being close to the game and

watching. You feel like you are a part of if,” Derek said.

The games kick-off at 7 p.m. with a few of the regular season games better than an hour away. This makes Friday night chores a bit dicey.

“We do chores early or we get someone to nish. It’s busy either way,” Rick said.

After two hours of practice after school, all four are outside for an hour and a half to two hours helping complete chores. While none of the boys will say chores are their favorite thing to do, they know it’s made an impression on them.

Mitchell said, “It’s hard work. You get a good work ethic. Sometimes you don’t like doing it but you feel good afterwords.”

Nathan and Mitchell have the unique experience of battling each other during practice. Mitchell is on the red-hat team, the team of younger players who have the unenviable task of scrimmaging the rst team during practice.

“He (Mitchell) tries really hard. And has that thought I can beat my older brother,” Nathan said.

But that doesn’t mean Nathan lets up on him during practice.

“No, if I would I would get yelled at,” Nathan said.

Not only does Mitchell not mind the matchup, he enjoys the opportunity and has developed an admiration for his older brother.

“I denitely look up to him. It’s pretty cool he started a game as a freshman and the whole season as a sophomore. It’s pretty impressive. He’s de-

Nathan is a unique athlete. He lines up in the trenches every game, is one of the team’s biggest players and was recently named to the Class 2A All-State Academic Football Team. He is also the team jokester.

“I don’t get super hyped up. The main thing I do is keep players relaxed and make a joke after a bad play happens. Football is a lot of hard work, unbearable sometimes. I personally try to make everyone focus on the fun,” he said.

Football and the team’s success have been the center of conversation around the Utecht farm for months.

“We talk quite a bit during chores this time of the year. They talk about how practice was and the upcoming game; those kinds of things,” Rick said.

No matter the outcome of the state championship game, Rick hopes his boys take along the farm lessons they’ve learned for the rest of their lives.

“Not everything comes easily, but you can be successful if you work hard at it,” Rick said.

JJ added, “You get out of it what you put into it. And sometimes it takes long hours to accomplish the goal.”

Bechtels working through another challenging year Promise of grazing brought pasture walk hosts from Montana

RICHLAND CENTER, Wis. – Greener pastures – literally – drew Herb and Nona Bechtel to southwest Wisconsin.

Their area of eastern Montana receives an average of 13 inches of rain a year. Now, 25 years later, they use managed grazing on their farm just outside Richland Center, Wis. And, sometimes there’s simply too much rain.

The Bechtels hosted a Great River Graziers’ Pasture Walk Nov. 15 on their rugged 300 owned and rented acres.

“I started reading about intensive grazing and wanted to do that. But I couldn’t in Montana, because we only

had about two months of grass,” Herb Bechtel said.

Wanting to get away from needing 27 acres to support one cow, the Bechtels moved to Wisconsin’s Richland County and rented a farm for six years. They bought their present place in 1997 and now milk 135 cows.

Most of the cows are Holsteins, but a few years ago, the Bechtels began trying Fleckvieh genetics. They have 35 head that are part Fleckvieh, with nine of those in the milking string.

Bechtel told the dozen people who turned out for the pasture walk that his thinking about the European breed has changed.

“I found out that they have different problems than Holsteins do. There are no magic breeds out there, and the Holsteins still milk more,” he said.

Noting that Nona and he do not push their herd for production, Bechtel said the cows are producing 4,000 pounds of milk a day. That was partly due to the low-quality forage of midNovember.

The Bechtels milk twice a day in a double-10 swing parlor that has been retrotted into the one-story barn that dates to the 1970s. Bechtel mentioned the concept of drying all the cows off for a couple of months each winter. Doing so would cut the amount of stored feed he uses and his expenses, but he doesn’t do that.

“I still have to make some money [even though the grazing season is pretty much over],” Bechtel said. “This time of year, with this kind of milk price, it just seems like summer is over and the time for making money this year is over. Everything else is chores and work.”

He also mentioned another reason.

“I don’t like to see fall come along.

I have to look at all the money I spent throughout the summer to get my cows through the winter,” he said.

Bechtel went on to relate some of the difculties 2016 has brought.

For one thing, Bechtel said the farm’s lone employee quit without notice.

“I don’t think there are too many things you can make that much money at in that short amount of time,” Bechtel said.

However, during the drought of a few years ago, his income suffered because of needing to buy feed.

“That was a tough year,” Bechtel said. “It’s something people who are new to dairying should be aware of. It seems like the banker doesn’t tell them that when they come in to get a loan.”

Bechtel talked about retiring from dairying in ve years or so. When that happens, he said he would like to have his herd of dual-purpose Fleckviehs built up to 50 or 60 head.

“This is the season of my life when I was looking to retire extra early. Dairying is a lot of work. I don’t

know if most of you have noticed that,” he said.

Bechtel said the work doesn’t get easier with age.

“Your feet get sore, your knees get tired and all these kinds of things. If you’re a young person looking to start out farming, you might not want to listen to me today,” he said, laughing.

Bechtel mused aloud about selling the farm to someone who wants to live down a quiet, dead-end road. He described the farm as being three miles from Richland Center and with no neighbors to be seen.

“It’s worth way more for me to sell it as a hunting place than as a farm,” he said. “Who knows what’s going to happen? We’re hoping that all these dairies that are putting in a thousand or two thousand cows won’t affect our milk price. But I think that’s only dreaming.”

Bechtel explained he’d cut the pastures’ thistles.

But the blooming regrowth beckoned to the orange insects. The new thistles, he said, “were just covered with butteries.”

The farmer offered this optimistic statement to his pasture walk guests: “I’m sure we’ll gure out a way to work around all this. We always have and we always will.”

Bechtel said he did not regret going to managed grazing and buying his place.

“When I started out, I was debt free,” he said. “I haven’t been there since. I wouldn’t have done it any other way. I just like to be out here. I like this farm.”

Renowned agroecologist and farmer Fernando Funes-Monzote will share insights about challenges for organic agriculture in Cuba on Thursday, January 12.

Donald Wyse will highlight the Forever Green Initiative and offer insights on improving economic opportunities for farmers on Friday, Jan. 13.

Funes-Monzote’s background as a scientist, scholar, and lecturer in the science of sustainable agriculture, known as agroecology, has brought him international accolades. He is a founding member of the Cuban Association of Organic Agriculture and earned a nomination for the 2015 Louis Malassis International Scientic Prize for Outstanding Career in Agriculture. Funes-Monzote owns and operates Finca Marta, Cuba’s premiere agroecology operation, which dedicates its efforts to activating the local economy, creating jobs, valuing rural life, and protecting the environment.

Professor Wyse was the founding director of the Minnesota Institute for Sustainable Agriculture and the Midwestern Cover Crop Council. He also initiated the development of the Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships at the University of Minnesota. His research includes diversication of cropping systems, weed management, and renewable energy systems. Wyse currently serves as codirector of the Center for Integrated Natural Resources and Agricultural Management at the University of Minnesota.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) announced the availability of $17.6 million for research and outreach activities to support the organic agriculture sector. The grants are funded through NIFA’s Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative (OREI), authorized by the 2014 Farm Bill.

“The organic industry is the fastest growing segment of U.S. agriculture, with sales growing by $4.2 billion last year to reach a record $43.3 billion,” said NIFA Director Sonny Ramaswamy. “Over the past seven years, USDA has invested nearly $261 million in research to improve the productivity and success of organic agriculture, including seed-breeding. The Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative is one of the many ways USDA is helping this sector meet growing consumer demand.”

OREI funds high-priority research, education and extension projects that enhance the ability of producers and processors who have already adopted organic standards to grow and market high quality organic products. Earthquake shakes New Zealand’s industry

The big story this week was the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in New Zealand’s South Island (SI) just after midnight on November 14 local time. The quake hit near Hanmer Springs, 95km from Christchurch on the northwest coast of the SI and was followed by a series of aftershocks, including one of 6.8 magnitude.

FC Stone’s Early Morning Update reported that the quake caused widespread disruption of the electrical grid, with large areas in the north of the SI without power and disruption to the road network with landslides and ruptured roads. A Fonterra press release reported that there was no major damage to any of their manufacturing sites but producer milking and milk pickups were affected.

In an unrelated, what you might call an “after shock” to the global marketplace, it was announced that the European Union (EU) Commission will propose the rst sales of skim milk powder (SMP) from EU Intervention.

FC Stone reports that SMP Intervention stocks stand at 334,551 tons and the EU is proposing to allow eligibility for 21,150 tons to go to tender, stock that was in storage as of November 1, 2015. “This will go onto the agenda for the November 24 meeting and if passed the rst tender is planned to take place December 13.”

“The majority of the SMP that would be eligible is in Belgium, Lithuania, Poland, Ireland, France and the UK, which make up 20,235 tons of the total,” FC Stone says, “and we estimate that the average age of the stock is currently 465 days. The EU tender process sets a window for companies to supply tenders for a volume that they will buy and the price. The EU then assesses the tenders and chooses what overall volumes or price levels they will accept and are under no obligation to sell any product in a given tender,” says FC Stone.

Dave Kurzawski wrote in his November 18 Early Morning Update; “Buyers may breathe a sigh of relief with this news and it could mitigate buyer worry in the short-term and even atten prices. In our opinion, however, building intervention stocks is bearish, removing intervention stocks is not. If they’re able to move stock out of intervention, they’re able to do so because there is a bid for product.”

The earthquakes however did send some vibes into Tuesday’s Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction which saw a third consecutive session of gain, up 4.5 percent on the weighted average for all products offered. That followed an 11.4 percent rise November 1 and 1.4 percent on October 18.

Gains were registered in all products offered, led by buttermilk powder, up 13.3 percent, following a 5.4 percent decline in the last event. Cheddar cheese followed, up 11 percent, after inching up 0.9 percent last time. SMP was up 9.8 percent, after climbing 6.5 percent. Lactose was up 4.6 percent. Anhydrous milkfat was up 4.4 percent, following a 2.6 percent rise last time. Whole milk powder was up 3.2 percent, after leading the gains last time at 19.8 percent. Butter was up 1.1 percent, after a 4 percent increase last time and rennet casein inched 0.6 percent higher, after dropping 4.8 percent.

FC Stone equated the average GDT butter price to $1.9447 per pound U.S., up from $1.8710 in the November 1 event. CME butter closed Friday at $2.03 per pound. GDT Cheddar cheese equated to about $1.6768 per pound U.S., up from $1.5116 last time, and compares to Friday’s CME block Cheddar at $1.91. GDT SMP, at $1.1620 per pound U.S., com-

pares to $1.0564 per pound last time, and the whole milk powder average, at $1.5526 per pound U.S., is up from $1.5045 per pound in the last event. The CME Grade A nonfat dry milk price closed Friday at 90-cents per pound.

HighGround Dairy (HGD) predicted in its November 15 post-GDT analysis that the strong result would “Give the Fonterra board condence to announce an upgrade to the ‘16/17 farmgate milk price forecast,” and it did that on Thursday, raising it 75 cents, to $6.00 per kilogram milk solids.

“When combined with the forecast earnings per share range for the 2017 nancial year of 50 to 60 cents, the total payout available to farmers in the current season is forecast to be $6.50 to $6.60 before retentions,” according to HGD, adding that Chairman John Wilson said the increase “reects improvements in pricing since September, following the gradual rebalancing of global supply and demand.”

HGD adds that “Oceania skim milk powder was the big winner for this GDT auction, and will provide New Zealand processors with greater exibility over optimization of a much smaller milk pool than was previously forecast.”

U.S. dairy products continue to move overseas via the Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) program.

Eleven requests for export assistance were accepted this week from Dairy Farmers of America, Foremost Farms and Northwest Dairy Association (Darigold) to sell 1.6 million pounds of cheese and 308,647 pounds of butter to customers in Asia, the Middle East, and Oceania.

The product has been contracted for delivery through February 2017 and raised CWT’s 2016 export sales to 45.8 million pounds of American-type cheeses, 11.75 million pounds of butter (82 percent milkfat) and 21.3 million pounds of whole milk powder to 23 countries on ve continents.

As it always does, USDA’s monthly Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Outlook, issued November 16, echoed dairy projections contained in the November 9 World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report (WASDE).

The Outlook stated that USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reported that milk cow numbers fell in September to 9.338 million head, a drop of 3,000 head from August. Notably, this drop is from a lower base than reported in the October Milk Production report, due to NASS downward revisions in milk cow numbers for July and August.” The 2017 forecast for milk cows was lowered 25,000 head to 9.37 million.

Milk per cow fell seasonally in September from the previous month, but increased year-over-year to 1,817 pounds. Milk production in September totaled 17.0 billion pounds, an increase of 2.1 percent from September 2015.

Feed price forecasts were raised slightly this month but remain low relative to milk prices. The 2016/17 corn price was forecast 5 cents higher at both ends of the range, at $3.00-$3.60 per bushel; the 2016/17 soybean meal price was forecast $5 higher at each end of the range, at $305-$345 per short ton.

Meanwhile; Chicago-based Commodity & Ingredient Hedging LLC’s latest Margin Watch (MW) reports that U.S. dairy margins have improved since the end of October due to a combination of higher milk prices and lower feed costs.

“Margins through Third Quarter 2017 are at or above the 80th percentile of the past ten years, offering dairies opportunities to secure forward coverage at relatively attractive levels,” the MW stated. “Milk

prices continue to be supported by strength in cash cheese trade at the CME, although the market has come off some in recent sessions.”

“Milk prices were also recently supported by two earthquakes that hit central New Zealand, which produces about 13 percent of that nation’s milk. The resulting disruption to the milk market led to higher trade at the GDT auction, with Fonterra indicating reduced milk collections as it revised it volume estimates signicantly lower. However, recent increases in the U.S. dollar index following the election and subsequent currency adjustments are making U.S. dairy products less competitive in the global market.”

Referencing USDA’s November WASDE report, which increased yield and production estimates for corn and soybeans, the MW concluded that “While higher projected demand offset some of the impact from the larger supply, both corn and soybean ending stocks were revised up from October. The result was mild pressure on both corn and soybean meal, although attention has increasingly shifted from supply to the demand side of the ledger.”

Warning of the growing U.S. milk supply and the questionable solution being exports; Kara O’Connor, Wisconsin Farmers Union Government Relations Director, gave a somber heads up in the November 16 Wisconsin State Farmer.

O’Connor pointed out that the National Agricultural Statistics Service shows that Wisconsin lost 201 dairy farms in the rst half of 2016, an average of 33 dairy farms per month, or one per day. She asks; “How many dairy farms are in your county? How long until all but a handful are gone?”

Chicago Mercantile Exchange prices strengthened the third week of November as traders anticipated Friday afternoon’s October Milk Production report. The 40-pound Cheddar blocks closed Friday at $1.91 per pound, up 2 1/2-cents on the week and 34 cents above a year ago. The 500-pound Cheddar barrels sunk to $1.6675 Thursday but rallied Friday, jumping 8 1/4-cents, to $1.75, a half-cent lower on the week, after plunging 10 1/2-cents the previous week, but are 24 3/4-cents above a year ago. The spread grew to 23-cents on Thursday, a gap not seen since May 2013, but still nished at an abnormally high 16 cents. Only three cars of block traded hands on the week and 49 of barrel, 21 on Friday.

“Midwest cheese production is active as manufacturers are working hard to get orders lled before the holidays,” according to Dairy Market News (DMN). “Some processors were planning to operate through all of Thanksgiving week, while others were adjusting schedules to keep their plant running and give employees a day off for the holiday.”

DMN adds that “Cheese makers report some ripples in demand and milk supply due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Available spot loads of milk had been a little short the previous weeks, but some manufacturers say milk is getting freed up by reduced holiday production schedules at a few facilities. A few contacts suggest cheese orders are mixed. In some cases, shoppers are eager to get orders secured before the holiday rush. Others think demand is easing and starting to show signs of the holiday pipelines getting lled.”

Western contacts say a lot of milk is going into cheese. “Production is active and seasonal retail sales are strong. Manufacturers report good demand for branded cheese. Buyers are placing regular orders for

Favorable pricing several weeks ago, and tight supplies in other international cheese producing regions have helped draw stocks down. Cheese inventories are still long for barrels and a few processors are carrying heavier amounts of cheese in their aging programs,â€? DMN said.

Spot butter’s return to $2 per pound was tested, slipping to $1.98 Tuesday, then regained a nickel Wednesday. The November 18 close of $2.03 per pound is up 2 cents on the week but is 85 1/2-cents below a year ago. Twenty ďƒžve cars exchanged hands on the week at the CME. “Central region Class II processors continue pulling substantial amounts of cream ahead of the yearend holiday,â€? reports DMN. “As a result, light to moderate cream availability is somewhat curtailing butter production. Most Thanksgiving orders from retailers are reportedly in the ďƒžnal stages.â€? “Western butter output is running strong as but-

ter makers work hard to meet remaining 2016 commitments. In some cases, processors are feeling a pinch and wondering if there is time to get enough butter made. Demand is solid and sales are drawing down supplies. Some manufacturers are anticipating a slowdown of seasonal butter demand in the next few weeks,� according to DMN. Grade A nonfat dry milk saw a 90 cent per pound close Friday, up 2 1/4-cents on the week and 12 cents above year ago. Seventeen cars were sold on the week.

Checking demand; ďƒ&#x;uid milk consumption inched a little higher in September and follows a 2.1 percent jump the month before. September packaged ďƒ&#x;uid milk sales totaled 4.1 billion pounds, up 0.2 percent from September 2015, according to DMN. Conventional product sales totaled 3.9 billion pounds, unchanged from a year ago; organic products, at 218 million pounds, were up 5.3 percent. Organic represented about 5.3 percent of total sales for the month.

Whole milk sales totaled 1.2 billion pounds, up

6.0 percent from a year ago, with year to date running 5.0 percent above a year ago and making up 28.7 percent of total ďƒ&#x;uid sales. Skim milk sales were down 11.2 percent from a year ago and down 11.0 percent year to date.

Total packaged ďƒ&#x;uid milk sales for the eight months of 2016 totaled 36.5 billion pounds, down 0.5 percent from the same period a year ago. Year-to-date sales of conventional products, at 34.6 billion pounds, were off 0.8 percent; organic products, at 1.9 billion pounds, were up 5.5 percent. Organic represented about 5.3 percent of total ďƒ&#x;uid milk sales so far in 2016.

EU Commission Surprises Markets

In a surprise announcement, the European Commission cleared the way for the Àrst sale of skim milk powder (SMP) from Intervention. Current reports indicate the tender will be for product that moved into Intervention prior to Nov. 15, 2015, or a volume of 22,150 metric tons. Several reasons are circulating as to why the commission is suddenly releasing product back into the system. One theory is gaining favor; the commission was concerned the market was overheating due to limited supplies from Europe and selling SMP from Intervention could slow further price increases. Unfortunately for markets, as the saying goes, the commission may be a day late and a dollar short in its logic.

its 33rd consecutive gain of monthly year-over-year output, according to the latest Milk Production report released this afternoon. In October, U.S. milk production was a substantial 17.6 million pounds, up 2.5% vs. the prior year.

Production per cow at 1,880 lbs. was up 2.3% from a year ago. The U.S. milking herd was 9.335 million head in October, 25,000 more than the start of the year but down 2,000 head from September’s revised Àgures. Dairies in Texas had the spigot wide open with milk production swelling 70 million pounds more than last year. Not to be outdone, California and New York were not far behind, with milk year-over-year output increasing 1.8% and 4.7%, respectively. In fact, six of the 23 states had production gains exceeding 40 million pounds. In October, only two states, Oregon and Illinois, logged production that was unchanged, and just three states, Utah, Florida, and Virginia, lost ground versus the prior year. While milk may be plentiful around the country, dairy products are seemingly hard to come by, evidenced by a strong weekly close at the CME. The block-barrel spread tightened today to just 16¢, but not due to a drop in block prices—quite the contrary, barrels moved higher. After very active trading

helped lift spot milk prices, which could attract more milk production. Additionally, higher prices from Europe caused buyers to shift from sourcing EU powder to buying U.S. SMP—a more cost-effective purchase. All steps a free market takes to restore balance to the marketplace when imbalances appear. However, the invisible hand’s work can be quickly undone by acts of governments, and it appears that is what could happen to the global SMP market.

There will likely be a single tender in 2016, but in 2017, the European Union could begin offering SMP twice a month. The commission’s draft regulation should be availableNov.24. Clearly, SMP prices are above Intervention levels, but whether the market will be able to handle the additional volume from Intervention is still unclear.

A young man’s dream

Belgian farmhand envisions life with cows, family

KASTERLEE, Antwerp, Belgium – From sunup to sundown, Jannes Maes’ days are consumed in the Belgian dairy

industry.

The 24-year-old, who grew up on a traditional European farm with milking cows and sheep, manages a 275-cow dairy near Kasterlee, Antwerp, Belgium – a community that borders the Netherlands.

Maes also serves as vice president of the European Council of Young Farmers, representing the 6.5 percent of agriculturalists in the European Union under the age of 35.

“My older brother took over the farm seven years ago and I had to nd work,” Maes said. “My foremost goal is to nd a farm of my own.”

In the meantime, Maes oversees the daily operations

of a crossbred dairy, nearly 100 miles away from his home farm.

“I don’t get to see [my family and friends] very often,” Maes said. “On Sundays I try to drive there for the day.”

For the remainder of the week, Maes stays busy.

His days begin at 6 a.m. milking the Holstein-crosses in a swing-26 parlor, followed by cleaning the facilities and feed-

ing the heifer calves.

The cows are housed in a 250-stall freestall barn with slatted oors and rubber mattresses bedded with sawdust.

The remainder of the herd, both dry cows and heifers, are housed in an older barn on site.

Maes’ employer and a co-worker maintain a second farm site that houses young bull calves for rosé veal production. Nearly 3,000 calves are raised on the farm and are fed a grain and milk diet until 8 months of age. This operation is one of many across the Flanders region of Belgium that produce 6 percent of the global veal production, according to a 2014 report.

“Our veal business helps cover the cost of the dairy, which is helpful with milk prices,” Maes said.

In October, Maes’ farm received 28.5 euros per 100 liters of milk, which converts to $13.65 per hundredweight (cwt.) The average dairy farmer in the Flanders region of the country is receiving $13.32 per cwt.

“We’re hopeful the free market prices are rising towards $22.52,” Maes said.

“However, we are literally farming among our consumers and I consider that a strength.”

The increase in price, however, cannot come soon enough.

On the farm Maes manages, the operating costs are $17.49 per cwt., leaving the farm with roughly a $4 loss for every 100 pounds of milk produced.

To receive the most from each milk check, Maes focuses on breeding healthy cows with a protable, prosperous future and providing those cows with quality feedstuffs.

Maes follows a strict crossbreeding program that emphasizes feet and leg structure, as well as milk volume and components.

“I select for functional beauty,” Maes said. “My rst and only concern is the production and sustainability of the herd. Traits that are considered nice on cows must also be functional to improve both production and sustainability.”

After making a breeding decision, the herd’s protability lies in management.

Amid a sub-oceanic climate – where relative humidity can be upwards of 90 percent and a mere four inches of precipitation reaches the sandy soils – Maes and other dairy producers rely on pasture grass and corn for their animals’ diets, even though the weather is not conducive for crop farming.

“Most farms are self-sufcient in the production of grass and corn, but the rest of our product we buy from other farmers in the region,” Maes said. “We have problems growing crops that need a lot of sunshine.”

The diets are supplemented with beet and wheat pulp, from ethanol production, in addition to straw and a mineral mix.

“The ration is calculated for a production of 57 pounds of milk per day,” Maes said. “If the cow produces extra, she gets another pound in the parlor.”

With the strict ration, Maes’ cows are on target to reach 19,400 pounds of milk on a 305-day lactation, with 3.8 percent protein and 4.5 percent butterfat.

The milk is sold to Limelco, a private cooperative that processes 454.4 billion pounds of milk annually, most of which is made into milk powders.

Breeding strategies and appropriate rations, coupled with strong infrastructure, help Maes maintain milk components that are pleasing for the processor and ultimately aid in a better milk price.

“The access to services is very easy in our region,” Maes said. “Flanders is one of the most urbanized regions in the world, and we rely on local dealers to maintain our infrastructure.”

However, Maes and his fellow dairy producers continue to face challenges.

Across Flanders, there are approximately 3,500 dairy farms; 40 surrounding the community of Kasterlee and several run by older couples.

“There are 10 to 15 being managed by elderly people, so disappearing in the near future,” Maes said. “But there is a lack of generational renewal. It’s difcult for young farmers to access land right now and to also receive nancing, and the tight nancial situation is creating a period of non-investment.”

Despite the unknowns of the future, Maes also sees promise within his community; a community he works closely with while farming within a mile radius of 15 families.

“We are farming between civilians and that can be a nuisance with too much noise and odor,” Maes said. “However, we are literally farming among our consumers and I consider that a strength.”

As a young dairyman, Maes is eager to push through the hurdles and develop a rewarding career in Belgium’s dairy industry.

“Farming is giving me the opportunity to earn an income by doing what I love – the combination of entrepreneurship, technical management and tradition of farming,” Maes said. “The challenge will be creating a situation that allows me to combine farm with family.”

Busy with bovines, buses Wargin balances dairy farm, role as school transportation director

HERMANTOWN, Minn.

– Dean Wargin knows every address in Hermantown Township by heart.

“People jokingly tease me for that, but it’s part of what I do,” Wargin said.

Although it is not part of Wargin’s responsibilities as a dairy farmer, it is necessary for his position as the Hermantown School District’s Transportation Director. Wargin, his wife, JoAnn, and their children, Angela Altonen, 31, Koby, 26, Alyssa, 23, and Haley, 21, milk 40 cows in a tiestall barn in St. Louis County in Hermantown, Minn.

Wargin has been with the school’s transportation department for the past 35 years after substitute driving for his father,

who worked there for 38 years.

“He talked me into it,” Wargin said.

For the next 15 years, Wargin drove bus for the Hermantown School District while managing his family’s dairy farm.

But when a full-time transportation director position opened up 20 years ago, Wargin jumped at the opportunity.

“As a dairy farmer, it provided me with health care,” he said.

“The extra income helped a lot, too.”

Since then, Wargin has a set routine to balance his dairy farm and his transportation director position where he manages 15 full-time and seven part-time drivers.

Wargin starts each weekday during the school year at 4 a.m., doing chores with his son, Koby.

After morning chores, Wargin arrives at the school at 6:30 to drive his two routes – a high school route for 60 kids in fth through 12th grade and an elementary route for 80 kids in kindergarten through fourth grade.

“It can get stressful, especially when I don’t know if I’ll have enough drivers for the morning or afternoon,” Wargin said. “In recent years, we’ve had a shortage of drivers due to the economy, so it can get challenging.”

Since JoAnn is a full-time bus aid, she has stepped in along with each of their children.

“The whole family helps when there’s a shortage of drivers, but it’s usually in emergency situations,” Wargin said.

Another challenge is the weather, especially during the winter.

As the transportation director, Wargin meets with the neighboring school transportation directors and superintendents to help determine if schools should be closed.

On days the weather is not a factor, it takes Wargin 2.5 hours both in the morning and in the

After nishing his afternoon routes, Wargin is back home by 5:30 to help Koby with chores.

On the farm, Koby and Wargin milk the 40 cows twice a day in their tiestall barn.

During the late spring, summer and early fall, the Wargins rotationally graze their cows on a portion of their 300 acres of land.

On top of the grasses in the pasture, the cows are fed dry hay consisting of alfalfa, clover and timothy grass, which are grown on the remainder of their acreage along with some oats.

“We rely on hay here,” Wargin said. “We have a short growing season here since we’re only 15 miles from Lake Superior, so we can’t grow corn.”

But they purchase a mixed 18 percent dairy feed consisting of corn, oats and a protein salt mineral.

Although Koby is busy with his construction job, he hopes to return to the farm full-time as the fth generation.

“It [dairy farming] is important to our family,” Wargin said. “We have fun doing it. I’m trying to get things ready for him.”

However, it has to get done amidst his duties with the school.

“That’s why we haven’t gotten any bigger than 100 total head on our farm,” Wargin said. “We wouldn’t be able to handle a second job if we did.”

Most of Wargin’s responsibilities are during the week, but there are times he is called in on a weekend.

“It’s usually for certain events, like sport trips or local groups traveling somewhere,” Wargin said.

Once the nine-month school year is nished, Wargin has three months to focus on the farm with only a few days each week spent at school.

“It does get busy from mid August through Labor Day since we’re getting ready for school,” Wargin said.

“It’s a busy time on the farm, too. I’d love to devote more time to the farm, but duty calls.”

Thankfully, JoAnn and the kids pitch in on the farm during those busy times.

“They make it easier for me,” Wargin said. “I also work some late nights on the farm to get everything done.

We make it work.”

Despite taking time away from the farm and the stress of balancing challenges on the farm and the transportation department, Wargin enjoys working with the school.

“I am proud that I’m in charge of getting 1,800 to 1,900 students to school and home safely every year with out any major accidents,” Wargin said. “I’ve worked with some great people.”

Being a dairy farmer amongst kids from town has its advantages.

“Once they learn I am a dairy farmer, I get a lot of questions,” Wargin said. “It’s a great way for them to learn about it.”

Even though he plans to step back from his position with the transportation department in the next ve years, Wargin is enjoying his busy schedule.

“The transportation job ts in perfectly with the farm,” Wargin said. “I like tackling two jobs at once.”

A day in the life of the Hanson family

Nov. 12 rounds out deer hunting season, fall eldwork

CLITHERALL, Minn. – The air had a bite to it as John and Beverly Hanson walked to their barn at 4:45 a.m. on Nov. 12. It was the beginning of a day that would be spent outdoors – taking advantage of the pleasant fall weather while it lasted.

“It’s going to be a beautiful afternoon,” John said.

Before the sun rose, the

couple wanted to complete chores so rearm deer hunting and eldwork could consume the remainder of their day. The Hansons and their children – Matthew, 20, and Jenny, 19 – milk 28 cows near Clitherall, Minn., in Ottertail County.

John followed in his father’s footsteps when he started his dairy farming lifestyle in 1982, a year after graduating high school; however, the family tradition of deer hunting began long before.

“My dad used to do it and we all started when we were kids. Those days it seemed like it was always cold with 20-degree days,” John said. “I like to go out and sit and see the wildlife; it’s peaceful out there.”

Now, November not only means the completion of fall

harvest and beginning of a deep winter, but also a time to share in the coveted family tradition – dressing in blaze orange, patiently watching the wildlife pass by and sharing the stories of adventure come nightfall.

took care of morning chores.

With Beverly prepping the cows for milking, John attached the units.

“We always milk together, except when John wants to go deer hunting,” said Beverly, who also works part-time at the Catholic church in Millerville, Minn. “It’s nice when he’s in the barn. Otherwise, it’s just Smokey [the dog] and I doing it all.”

After milking was completed, Beverly fed the calves and chickens, and swept the mangers as John nished cleaning the milkhouse.

The couple then retreated

to the house for breakfast and to plan out the remainder of their day.

By 8:30 a.m., John nished chores by lling outdoor feedbunks with hay and corn silage for the heifers and cows. A short time later, Matthew joined his father in letting the cows out of the barn.

“Days like today we keep the cows out all day,” John said. “In the winter, though, they’re only out for an hour.”

With morning chores completed, Matthew, Jenny and Kris made their way to the deer stands.

“We’ve seen many deer the last couple of days,” John said. “They’re out there.”

With the sun shining and a light breeze, another opportune time may not come about before the rst snowfall.

Throughout the afternoon, John plowed the soil on the Hansons’ 226 acres, about half of which are tillable.

“I was able to put the tractor away for the year,” John said. “That’s a good feeling.”

After growing up on a dairy farm down the road from his current farm site, John purchased his dairy and now works closely with his brother, James, who farms nearby.

“I like being out in the country. I don’t really know any different.”

The brothers operate their farms separately, but share most equipment.

Their father, too, enjoys helping his sons with each of their farming endeavors.

“He’s out to the farm everyday and likes to check in,” John said.

Beverly grew up on a dairy farm, also. Her father and brother continue to milk cows near Fergus Falls, Minn.

“When John and I got married in

1994, I brought down my three cows to this farm,” said Beverly, who was her father’s right-hand man in the barn. “I’ve always liked the peace and quiet of dairying.”

As dusk set in on Saturday evening, John and Beverly once again made their way to the barn, patiently watching the barn door for when their children and nephew would arrive home.

They had heard earlier in the day that Jenny saw a doe.

“But she couldn’t get a good, clean shot,” John said.

With a few cows left to milk that evening, Matthew, Jenny and Kris arrived shortly after 6 p.m., and with no stories to tell.

However, there was one more day left in the season and Jenny was optimistic that luck would catch up to her, just as it had last year.

With only a few minutes left of rearm season last fall, ve deer walked out in front of Jenny’s stand.

Before sunset, a six-point buck came out of the woods, following the ve other animals, and Jenny lled her tag.

“I was waiting all week for that,” she said. “We saved the best for last.”

As John and Beverly listened to their family chatter about the afternoon and hopes for tomorrow, Nov. 12 came to an end with a cherished evening in the barn – another family tradition.

“There’s always time to catch up for the day, whether we’re in the barn or at supper,” Beverly said.

FFA: forming leaders, advocates for agriculture Winona chapter to host 75th anniversary celebration Dec. 4

WINONA, Minn. – Although 35 years separate their high school experiences, Roger Aldinger and his daughter, Hannah, share one experience in an organization that bridges the years – FFA. Both have been a part of the Winona FFA chapter, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year with a gathering from noon to 3 p.m. Dec. 4 in the Winona Senior High School Commons in Winona, Minn.

“We felt 75 years is pretty worthy of celebrating something and is quite an accomplishment,” said Roger, who milks 65 cows on his farm near Winona, Minn.

While Roger has been a part of the alumni group for four years and is currently president, Hannah is a senior in high school and a current member of

The alumni group has been planning the celebration for the past year.

“We’re hoping to get as many people there as possible, especially past members or friends of the FFA. We will have tables with memorabilia – old photos, scrapbooks and awards.

We hope people want to show up, share stories of the past and talk about the old times,” Roger said.

At 2 p.m., there will be a presentation starting with an opening ceremony, like the one done at FFA meetings. Past members will play a part in this, including the president of the chapter in the late 1940s. There will also be a video featuring past members talking about their FFA experience and an open mic session where anyone in attendance can share a story or a favorite memory of their time in the organization.

“We’re hoping it’s going to be a fun day,” Roger said.

The Winona FFA became an ofcial chapter on Dec. 4, 1941. On display at the event will be the charter signed by the original members, many of whom still have family members in the area.

Roger was involved in FFA from his sophomore to senior year in high school from the fall of 1979 to the spring of 1982. During that time, he served as sentinel and president. He also participated on the dairy judging, farm management and soils teams.

“We didn’t start a soils team until my senior year,” Roger said. “It was fun. We threw a team together at the last minute and went to an invitational. We were dead last. It was horrible. A week after we went to the regional contest and nished rst. We went on to state and nished third. I thought it was really cool.”

Roger said FFA was an important part of his high school experience.

“I had heard good things about it and I was interested in pursuing farm-

culture. You get to know yourself and it helps to build special relationships with other chapter members, to help you grow,” Hannah said.

It wasn’t always Hannah’s intention to join the organization.

“Dad made me join. I wasn’t a fan at rst. Once I got into high school, I opened up more. I’m not afraid to speak in front of people and I think FFA helped me come out of my shell and be a better leader for sure. I really enjoy it,” she said.

Two years ago, Hannah served as the chapter historian and throughout her six years in the organization has been actively involved in all chapter activities. During the summer, the chapter members ride in parades and operate a petting zoo. They also volunteer their time to work their malt stand during Winona’s Steamboat Days.

ing after school. At that time FFA was more an agriculture thing so I thought it would be a good thing to join,” he said.

The chapter had about 40 members with half of them being active during Roger’s years in FFA. Most of the members were boys and 80 percent lived on farms.

Hannah’s FFA experience has been different. Although the chapter is about the same size as when her dad was in school, it encourages non-farm kids to become members.

“It’s turning more towards leadership,” Hannah said. “You don’t have to live on a farm to be in FFA. It’s more about leadership, all the opportunities, being able to volunteer and help the community.”

Girls are also a strong presence in the chapter. Seven out of the past eight Winona FFA presidents have been girls, and many have served as other ofcers.

ConƟnued from WINONA FFA | Page 22 “It was very exhausting because we worked 12hour shifts each day, but it was fun being with other people in our chapter. It was a lot of work, but it was really rewarding,” Hannah said.

Another big volunteer opportunity is the Winona County Old Settler’s Association Banquet. Their chapter also adopts a highway to pick up the trash from the ditches, holds a bowling tournament, organizes a donkey basketball game, operates a fruit sale, puts together a talent show and has fun with a taco eating contest.

“I love the volunteer work. It’s so rewarding,” Hannah said.

Both Hannah and Roger attribute part of the success of their chapter to the current advisor, Brian Sather, who has been with Winona FFA for 35 years.

“He’s so dedicated. He spends so much time on FFA,” Roger said. “That’s where it all starts. If you

don’t have a strong advisor, FFA won’t thrive. You need that person to organize and push people.”

But each of them also realizes it takes a team of people to make the chapter grow strong and turns the organization into a group of friends.

“There are a lot of friendships that I established 35 years ago, and I’m still friends with these people.

Some of them I haven’t seen in many years so I’m hoping they show up. It would be fun to see them and nd out what they’ve done with their lives after the last few decades,” Roger said.

The Aldingers hope they can honor the Winona FFA chapter’s members at their upcoming celebration.

“It’s a really big accomplishment for us as a chapter,” Hannah said. “I hope it keeps going for years to come.”

Thankful, though challenging harvest

Wet eld conditions have made harvest challenging. Some soybeans and more of the corn crop was not harvested yet when rain and snow arrived on Friday, November 18. We were already expecting that some elds wouldn’t be harvested until the ground freezes up. Yields generally are reported to be very good. Yields are reduced in parts of elds that have been mostly saturated since mid-July.

I seem to be hearing more concern about nancial conditions for farm families as commodity prices continue to be low compared to the rising costs of living and doing business.

Health insurance for farm families and others who are selfemployed or working for small businesses is a major concern.

I don’t claim to have quick answers to these issues, and I’m not aiming to stir feelings of gloom. My purpose here

By Dan Martens is just to acknowledge that issues exist. Things vary some U of M Extension from farm to farm; and family to family. Reports of great crop yields don’t automatically mean things are rosy on every farm. For example, some farmers were only able to chop half or less of the corn silage they need because of wet eld conditions. Lower milk prices make it more difcult to buy some of the extra hay they might need. Debt load can be a huge factor in how cash ow budgets work out.

Farmers know that farming is a business of cycles with markets, yield, the weather and other things. They do their best to manage the farm business accordingly. But sometimes the cycles stretch things pretty thin.

When things are difcult, our natural response is often to isolate and disconnect from people around us. But it’s actually important to stay connected to people around us. That might mean looking for meaningful opportunities to visit with family and friends, and talk with other people you work with around the farm… about things that are important to you, things you have to enjoy – even when some things are difcult. Talk with nutrition advisors, agronomy staff, vets, creditors and others to consider adjustments or strategies that might be useful. Be sure to consider ideas in the context of your experience and the things that are important to you and your family.

I’d guess, whether times are good or difcult, we benet by connecting with people who help us keep some balance in our perspectives about things. These are relationships and friendships we treasure over the years; and perhaps most signicant to remember as we bow at a meal, kneel by a pew, or greet others with a work of thanks.

Seeking common ground

HSUS hopes to work with farmers

MADISON, Wis. – The Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin (PDPW) welcomed a variety of consumers and industry representatives to address those participating in the Food and Policy Summit Oct. 25 in Madison, Wis. Included on the agenda was Marty Irby, Senior Director of Rural Outreach and Equine Protection for the Humane Society of the United States. Often perceived as an organization in opposition to animal agriculture, summit participants were intrigued to learn that Irby’s goal is to nd areas HSUS and dairy farmers alike can work together.

Irby said he works toward positive change in animal agriculture. Having been raised on an Alabama horse and cattle farm, Irby rst served as the president of the Tennessee Walking Horse Association. It was through that role that he rst began working with HSUS. “I saw their ability to perpetuate change and I g-

ured it was better to have a seat at the table with them than it was to sit across the aisle throwing rocks at them,” Irby said.

Irby entered his current position earlier this year as the head of rural outreach. In his role, he works with farmers that humanely raise livestock for human consumption as well as partners in the equine industry.

HSUS is one of over 20,000 animal protection groups and is the largest in the world, with a uctuating membership between 10 and 11 million members. Irby said the organization works directly with animal rescue, wildlife preservation and range animal rescue.

Irby presented results from a survey conducted by the Department of Agricultural Economics at Oklahoma State University that looked at consumer preferences for farm animal welfare. As a result, the study found that 95 percent of consumers surveyed expressed an importance for farm animals being well cared for and 75 percent would vote

Some of the areas HSUS tries to work with farmers include practices related to lameness, mastitis, use of rBST, dehorning without the use of painkillers, the use of tiestalls, calf housing, barn ooring, transport of ill and injured animals, humane handling and downer cattle.

Irby believes working together could lead to better results for both farmers and the organization.

“Our organization feels we could gain a lot more ground working with people like you,” Irby said. “We try to work with everyone to build a big 10 organization. We are working towards progress, not perfection.”

In his role, Irby works with agriculture councils in 13 states and at a national level. He said these councils are a way for farmers to impact developing and current legislation.

“Our goal is to perpetuate more change for the betterment of farm animals by people using products that are humanely raised.”

“This is an opportunity for producers raising livestock for human consumption. What we do is sort of two-fold: we work to advance legislation for the betterment of farm animals, and in some cases, prevent legislation, such as the right to farm initiative,” Irby said. “Our goal is to perpetuate more change for the betterment of farm animals by people using products that are humanely raised.”

Irby described humanely raised animals as those not grown in extreme connement.

“They are out on pasture, not necessarily all the time, but they do have the opportunity to go out, stretch their legs, spend time outdoors, eat grass, enjoy the sunshine. We are rm believers in that: they should be able to spend time in their natural environment, the way God intended,” Irby said.

Irby continued by saying several agriculture and food companies are already working alongside HSUS. “We spend a lot of time working with Organic Valley here in Wisconsin. We are currently working on advancing a regulation that the USDA has proposed to better dene the organic standards for the [organic] label,” Irby said.

Irby concluded his presentation by yielding questions from summit participants. He said he is open to learning about farmer’s opinions and what their perception is of the HSUS organization.

“I have found it very interesting to work with the people [at HSUS] and to nd that they are very moderate. We are much different than … some of the other organizations that are out there,” Irby said. “It is more about a moderate approach of working together with people to build a big 10 organization that, at the end of the day, perpetuates more change.”

The teat is an extremity and occurs in the coldest place on the cow’s body. This location makes it easy for injury and damage to happen to the teat in winter time.

Things to consider with teat health in winter: • Teat end cracking can occur and cure very rapidly (2-3 days) (usually associated with temperature changes) • Temperatures don’t have to be < 0 to see teat end cracking • Even with winter dips and best management practices you may see teat end changes with temperature changes • Milking/ rubbing accentuate damage to teats How can you help minimize cracking of teats?

• Windbreaks: if wind <5 mph, -20 F can be tolerated • Feed and house cattle indoors when possible • Avoid drafts/humidity • Avoid direct wind chills post milking if possible • Temperature changes are devastating to teat ends • Remember that even the best machine is an irritant/stressor to the cow – so want to maximize let down and avoid over milking.

What can you do if cracking does occur?

• Minimize other stressors that exacerbate problem should cracking/ freezing occur • Keep teat disinfected/ healthy/ soft • Minimize secondary bacterial infections • Do not use salves – can help breed bacteria What are characteristics of a good winter teat dip?

Winter dip options: • Normal lactating cow dips, 5-10% conditioners • Barrier dips require 20 minutes to dry also tend to be harder to get off at the end of the winter • Winter dips (cold temps only) 1. Dry powder – hard to apply and can wick moisture on teat 2. High emollient dips have greater than 50% skin conditioner so they evaporate slowly, leaving the teat oily/ wet for 2-6 hours after application 3. For both types of winter dips you need clean stalls and they cost more money than traditional dips.

• Chlorine Dioxide must be mixed daily. This dip leaves a drop on the end of the teat that keeps the teat end soft and hydrated. Chlorine Dioxide is a very effective germicide but it is also very costly • The nal option is to quit dipping altogether. The teat end is still wet and has no contagious mastitis control. When no dip is used the teats dehydrate quicker due to absence of skin conditioner.

Johnson receives NDS scholarships Jacob Johnson, an Agricultural Education, Agricultural Science and Dairy Production major at South Dakota State University (SDSU) from Windom, Minn., recently received two scholarships from the National Dairy Shrine. Johnson was selected to receive the Klussendorf scholarship and a National Dairy Shrine/Dairy Management, Inc. Education & Communication Scholarship.

Frickson works as auctioneer for over half a century

LANESBORO, Minn. – A visit to the Lanesboro Sales Commission on a sale day will almost guarantee a chance to hear Freddy Frickson put his auctioneering skills to work.

“I rarely miss a sale. I’m always here,” said Frickson, who lives in Winona, Minn.

That’s been the case for the past 59 years. The 81-yearold has worked as an auction-

eer at the Lanesboro, Minn., sale barn for over half a century, having sold thousands of cattle each week of his career.

“There’s something about it that’s just fun,” Frickson said about auctioneering.

“You’re in charge. It’s really interesting to see how the prices are. It’s just fun.”

Although there are many aspects of being an auctioneer, Frickson said there’s one that tops the list.

“You have to know the value of the animal and then

you have to try to get all you can for it. You can’t undersell it,” he said.

With 59 years of experience at the sale barn, Frickson said the ow of his words while auctioneering comes naturally.

“It becomes automatic,” he said. “It’s similar to a singer, really. You get the hang of

it, you just know what you’re going to do next. You use ller words.”

However, Frickson had been working on his skill long before landing his job in Lanesboro.

When he went home, Frickson would practice what he learned from that day’s auction.

“When I would be doing chores I would be selling the cow I was milking. They got sold many times,” Frickson said with a laugh.

After eighth grade, Frickson quit school to help on the farm.

“I didn’t go to high school. We had a big farm and a lot of work; my brother and I had to stay home to help on the farm,” Frickson said.

But auctioneering was always on his mind. In 1957 at the age of 22, Frickson decided to act on his dream.

To get the $150 he needed to go to auctioneering school, Frickson sold one of his only possessions – his horse.

“When I went to the school I didn’t have a dime. But my mom gave me $20 for spending money. The school included meals. It was in a big hotel in Mason City, Iowa,” Frickson said.

I’ve sold hundreds of dairy cattle auctions,” he said.

The temperature in the sale barn is also more comfortable. Frickson remembers working one sale on Feb. 1 where the temperature was 17 degrees below zero. On the other end the spectrum, Frickson has also worked at sales in the summer with temperatures around 97 degrees with high humidity.

“Boy, that’s tough on you,” he said.

Along with auctioneering, Frickson would solicit cattle for sales.

“Whenever I had time, I would drive the country and look at cattle,” he said.

Frickson would travel nearly 70,000 miles each year.

“Now in the winter time I don’t like to drive so I don’t do it much anymore,” he said.

Frickson also bought a farm in 1960 for his private dairy cattle sales. Frickson did that until about 1985 when his son, Brett, took over the farm and started his own dairy herd.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of auctioneering for Frickson has been the people he has gotten to know over the years.

Analysts discuss impact of Trump election on food, ag sector

The election of Republican candidate Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States has the food and agriculture sector awaiting clarication on his policies and positions. The Rabobank Food & Agribusiness Research and Advisory (FAR) group has authored a report on the possible implications of the election.

“Republican-controlled Executive and Legislative branches could mean swift action when the new administration takes ofce,” notes Pablo Sherwell, Rabobank head of Food & Agribusiness Research and Advisory, North America. “Our analysts and others around the world are keeping a close eye on trade, labor, the upcoming Farm Bill and regulations impacting production agriculture, as these areas are where potential policy changes could have longer-term implications on the industry as a whole.”

While President-elect Trump’s policies are yet to be clearly dened, his statements during the campaign suggest drastic changes from current policy could be on the horizon. Acknowledging that any change, and the subsequent impact, is uncertain, Rabobank analysts dissect key areas to watch, both short and long-term: In the short term, agricultural markets may be affected by foreign exchange volatility, as well as changing business appetite and consumer condence.

Looking towards the next year, it will be critical to watch potential revisions to trade agreements, labor policies and business regulations, as well as the effects these elements will have on economic growth.

Short-term implications The lack of market information creates uncertainty, and uncertainty generates market volatility. We saw this rst-hand last week, when an initial uncertainty over President-elect Trump’s policy direction resulted in a short-term sell-off reaction by markets.

“Currently, the export share of U.S. agricultural production represents more than 20 percent in volume and value terms, making U.S. price formation highly dependent on foreign trade and therefore foreign currency,” said Sherwell.

Longer-term implications Trade agreements, agricultural policy and labor will act as key areas where potential policy changes could have longer-term implications on the industry as a whole.

Trade Agreements: As the number-one global agricultural exporter, the U.S. F&A sector is one of the main drivers of global agriculture and trade, reaching nearly $125 billion in 2016. Currently, the U.S. exports commodities that complement the rest of the world’s food supply—any change to U.S. agricultural trade agreements will not only affect global prices and trade dynamics but also U.S. farmer margins.

Farm Bill 2018: The current Farm Bill is scheduled to be renewed by 2018. Because the Republican Party holds the majority, the development, approval and implementation of the 2018 Farm Bill is likely to be a smoother process than that of the previous bill.

Regulatory reductions have been a policy direction advocated by President-elect Trump during his candidacy, and it is likely that the direction will shift even more toward an environment of reduced regulation.

Labor: The U.S. food and agriculture industry is highly dependent on migrant labor, particularly in sectors such as produce, animal protein and food service operation. If immigration laws are enforced more strictly, business owners may face labor shortages, which would pressure their margins.

Solutions to farm transfer challenges Schneider gives tips during PDPW webinar

mining what the family wants out of the farm succession plan. There are four benets a family farm can provide: income, wealth accumulation, career and legacy. Schneider said parents and successors should each identify which of these items are prioritized for each side and effectively communicate those priorities to all parties involved in the succession plan.

“Parents need to decide . . . what the priorities are with respect to these benets. The farm transfer plan needs to be tailored to serve the parent’s chosen priorities,” Schneider said. “Parents need to communicate their planning objectives to the farm successors and children need to also communicate their planning objectives to the farm’s senior generation.”

Once priorities are identied, the value of the farm must be identied and agreed upon. Schneider suggests determining the farm’s value based on income as opposed to assets or market value, as it allows a more detailed cash ow, allows for varying capital expenditures and a cost of capital that includes debt and equity.

“It is surprising how many farm owners do not know the value of their farm. It is important to have a realistic estimate for succession planning, purchase options, buyouts, compensation and many farm business decisions,” Schneider said.

When the farm’s value is determined, the next challenge is recognizing how much owners and successors will need to pay in taxes. This is most commonly determined by transferring long-term capital gain assets through sale, a combination of gift and sale transfers or by leasing ordinary income assets such as machinery, livestock and building sites.

For some farms, establishing an LLC may be the most suitable option for both transferring assets and determining taxation. For tax reporting purposes, an LLC is taxed the same as a partnership unless it elects to be taxed as a corporation. An LLC partnership is a tax conduit, ling its own tax returns with its own methods of depreciation and basis in assets. MADISON, Wis. – Farm succession planning can be challenging. A farm’s future success could ultimately hinder on an effective transfer of assets, ownership and responsibilities.

There are several common challenges and questions farm owners face while transferring the farm to the next generation.

Attorney Troy R. Schneider of Twohig, Rietbrock, Schneider & Halbach, S.C. law rm in Chilton, Wis., identied these challenges and how to address them on Nov. 9 during a Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin (PDPW) webinar.

The rst challenge Schneider identied is hiring the right group of people to help navigate the transition. He said it is best to select a team of advisors, not just one individual, who can be a sounding board throughout the succession planning process.

“Preferably, you select a team of advisors who can work as a team, which may likely include an attorney, accountant, lender or consultant,” Schneider said. “You should select those who do not act as cheerleaders, but rather provide you with hard, honest advice and what you need to hear.”

He also suggested establishing a family council. With a growing number of family businesses being managed by involved non-family members, having a family council can ensure the farm is being managed according to the family’s core values.

“A family council is a group of family members who determine what the goals are of the family. A family council meets for the soul purpose of discussing the business within a family context,” Schneider said. “It is much like having a board of directors. While this model isn’t necessarily appropriate for every farm out there, it may be for larger farms and those who have a lot of uninvolved family members.”

“Farms that have transferred from one generation to the next have been able to recreate the energy that fueled the entrepreneurial spirit of the previous generation.”

The biggest concerns Schneider encounters with farms establishing succession plans is the fear of disagreement amongst children or successors.

Farm owners should openly communicate the advantages and disadvantages that are involved with a partnership.

“Partnerships give the opportunity for the family to preserve its legacy and

pass quality values to the next generation . . . it also allows each person to focus on his or her individual strengths and assume individual responsibilities while sharing in decision making on important matters,” Schneider said.

“But they must also recognize they are held accountable and subject to criticism. Each partner is nancially dependent on the success or failure of the farm, rather than outside investments.”

Finally, having durable powers of attorney is important to ensure the farm is successfully transferred once the parents have deceased. Schneider suggested having general agents who manage the personal nancial matters and farm agents who have the authority to manage and control farm business activities while continuing the planned transfer of farm assets. He also suggested making sure the transfers go in an order of succession rather than all at once.

“Early death can require acquisition of too many assets at one time.

Most successful farm estate plans look at transferring on-farm assets to the successors rst, then the second focus to the farm real estate. The third focus is other real estate. The fourth is distribution of non-farm assets and the fth focus is the best use of any life insurance,” Schneider said.

Schneider concluded saying there is no right time to begin succession planning. Getting an early start and having a sound plan could determine the future of the farm’s success.

“A family farm will endure depending on how effectively it plans for the future,” Schneider said. “Farms that have transferred from one generation to the next have been able to recreate the energy that fueled the entrepreneurial spirit of the previous generation.”

Attention to perception pays off

Pechacek farms in city limits, has SCC of 56,000

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – When Zac Pechacek looks out across the pasture from his barn door, he is greeted by sights of subdivisions and sidewalks.

For the past four years, Pechacek has been farming in his hometown – and as of the last two years, his rented barn actually resides within the city limits of River Falls, Wis. “Four years ago, I started farming in a rented barn after graduating high school with 15 cows in partnership with an older couple,” he said. “Then, two years ago, I moved into this barn in the city limits.”

Pechacek, who milks 40 cows, said his location is the biggest reason for keeping his operation as clean as possible.

High standards for cleanliness,

in turn, has contributed to topnotch milk quality and cow comfort.

“Public perception is my main motivator for cleanliness,” Pechacek said. “It’s something I’m very picky about.”

That pickiness has paid off for Pechacek. His herd, composed of mostly Holsteins with a few Jerseys and Milking Shorthorns, ran an average somatic cell count of 56,000 in 2015.

“Out of about 400 farms in my cooperative, my farm had the sixth lowest somatic cell count,” Pechacek said.

Pechacek was also recognized at this year’s Pierce County Dairy Recognition Banquet as the winner of their Milk Quality Excellence Award.

Stalls in the tiestall barn are bedded with sawdust and straw in the summer, and in the winter, cows rest in stalls lled with cornstalks and lime.

Pechacek puts cows out to pasture during the day as the weather allows purely for cow comfort, and they have access to TMR while lying around outside.

“If it’s really muddy, I keep the cows in the barn,” Pechacek said. “I don’t want my cell count to go up, and I really don’t want people looking at dirty cows when they drive by.”

Come milking time, Pechacek meticulously maintains that focus on keeping every inch of his cows clean and

dry. He wipes each teat with a towel to make sure they are clean before coating them with an iodine-based teat dip.

“Wiping them with a towel also keeps the dipper clean,” he said.

Pechacek leaves the dip on for a full minute, allowing it to kill any pathogens that might still be lurking on the skin of the teat.

“I wipe the dip off before forestripping about eight to 10 times per teat,” Pechacek said.

“It also helps a cow let down her milk more easily.”

If a cow has a somatic cell count over 100,000, she gets a few extra strips.

“A cow at 100,000 is high for me, so I want to get as much of those cells out before I attach the milker,” Pechacek

said.

Units are attached within a few minutes of preparing a cow for milking in order to take advantage of milk letdown.

“Right now, the cows are milking around 70 pounds a day,” Pechacek said. “A quarter to a third are registered, and my family and I show at the Pierce County Fair.”

In addition to his high standards for milk quality, Pechacek’s location also dictates his manure management.

“When and where I spread manure really depends on the weather and where the wind is coming from,” he said. “I don’t want any complaints from anyone living across the road.”

Across the road from Zac Pechacek’s farm are subdivisions and sidewalks in a growing area of River Falls, Wis. into ensuring his cattle cause as few problems as possible for his neighbors.

“I spent about $20,000 renovating the barn and milkhouse, including upgrading the ventilation system and barn cleaner so it would emit as little odor as possible,” he said. “Now, when I’ve got the fans blowing, my landlord even says he can’t smell anything, and he lives right on the property.”

In keeping with the saying “good fences make good neighbors,” Pechacek is conscientious about the cows getting out as well. In fact, the cows have only escaped their pasture twice in the two years that he has been dairying in his current barn.

“When they got out, they mostly stayed in the front yard until I was able to round them up again,” Pechacek said.

While Pechacek is busy with farming full time on his own, he also helps out on a 300-cow dairy farm south of

River Falls owned by his mentors, Roger and Bev Peterson.

“I didn’t grow up on a farm, but I grew up helping out the Petersons.

That’s where I got my start,” he said. “I help out there about three or four times a week, and I purchase my feed from them, as well.”

He credits the Petersons with helping him put down roots in the dairy industry, and for a lot of the protocols he uses on his own farm today.

“I started adopting some of their practices for milk quality and crop production, and it’s really paid off,” he said.

It is fair to say learning from others, as well as a laser-like focus on milk quality and cow comfort, have more than paid off for Pechacek.

“Farming is what I’ve always wanted to do, and even though prices aren’t great right now, I wouldn’t want to do anything else,” he said.

Sachs family named Olmsted County Farm Family of the Year

EYOTA, Minn. – To the Sachs family, the cows on their dairy mean more to them than providing an income.

“You can have the worst day and then a cow comes up to you and makes it better. All our cows want to be pet and they make everything a lot more tolerable,” Carrie Sachs said.

This love for their herd is all part of the reason for the Sachs family being named the 2016 Olmsted County Farm Family of the Year. Carrie and Charlie Sachs along with their three children – Jay, 19, CJ, 18, and Annamarie, 16 – milk 65 cows on their dairy near Eyota, Minn.

The Sachses said they were honored to receive the award.

“We were honored that people thought that of us, especially because of the fact that we haven’t lived here all our lives, either. We’re transplanted,” Carrie said.

The family moved to Eyota in 2002 after farming in Dakota County. Dairying in the metro area had been getting harder and more expensive.

“I couldn’t compete with those guys who were selling land farther up and coming down to buy up the land around us. I couldn’t buy the farm across the road from Dad’s that had the grain bins. I couldn’t compete,” Charlie said.

Plus, the Sachs family was dealing with having stray voltage and would need to rebuild a barn to stay in business.

The Sachses had visited family for Thanksgiving in 2000 in the Eyota area. Through family, they connected with Tom and Barb Sell who were looking to retire from dairying. Their children weren’t interested in taking over their farm.

“We looked at the farm and it had everything we wanted,” Carrie said about the Sell’s dairy.

But the thought of selling the farm in Dakota County that had been in the Sachs family for 80 years was a hard concept to accept.

“I was having a hard time with it until I remembered my grandma. We bought the farm from her on April Fool’s Day. She looked at the lawyer on the day we did the paperwork and said, ‘I know they won’t retire here like Dad and I did, but it will give them a good start.’ When I remembered her saying that, I thought well I guess it’s OK to sell it and move,” Charlie said.

The Sachs family moved in with the Sell family in September 2002 right before the start of the school year when Jay started kindergarten. For the next three months, the families worked together to make a smooth

transition.

“They really took us in,” Carrie said about the Sells.

After awhile, Charlie’s parents, Chuck and Berniece, also sold their Dakota County farm and moved to Eyota to be a part of the new Sachs farm.

Although their farm site is now a rst-generation farm, dairying together with family will always be a tradition passed on for the Sachses.

“Charlie’s grandma and grandpa, and parents gave us the foundation to farm. Our ethic of farming comes from them,” Carrie said.

They’ve also enjoyed being able to spend time together with their children on the farm.

“Anna grew up sleeping in a stroller or a wagon in the parlor. With the boys, when we were in the stall barn, we would put them in the wagon until they started crawling out,” Charlie said. “I’d grab them right before they hit the gutter. So I’d have a milking unit in one hand and a kid in the other hand, and I’d think this isn’t going to work very good.”

But they made it through, teaching their kids valuable life lessons along the way.

“Through the highs and lows of farming, I think the kids understand that money isn’t always there,” Carrie said. “And they’ve learned respect, a hard work Turn to SACHS | Page 37

The Sachses have always made dairying a family activity, trying to nurture a love for the way of life in their kids. Jay is a student at South Dakota State University in dairy production while CJ plans to go to Northeast Iowa Community College for dairy science.

When Annamarie goes off to college in a few years, she wants to pursue agricultural education.

“It’s part of our life,” Carrie said about agriculture. “When times have been tough with thoughts of selling the cows, we say we can’t.”

Along with working on their dairy, the Sachs family is involved in 4-H and FFA. While the kids show dairy cattle and exhibit projects, Carrie and Charlie volunteer their time in their club and for the dairy show at the county fair. Charlie and Carrie serve together on the Olmst-

ed County American Dairy Association board and were part of their team that started the fair’s Miracle of Birth Center.

Charlie serves on his co-op’s board of directors. In addition, Carrie works fulltime as a nurse.

The family agreed sometimes making their schedule work is a balancing act, but that’s part of their family’s philosophy – they make it work.

“We only try to worry about the things you can control and let God take care of the things you can’t,” Charlie said. “If you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans.”

And the Sachs family likes to share in those laughs, trying to make dairying and their lifestyle as fun for the whole family as possible. Because to them, cows mean more than income.

“I don’t know if I can do life without cows,” Charlie said.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a medium skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef and drain fat. Add the diced tomatoes with green chilies, water, sour cream and taco seasoning mix. Let simmer for 5-10 minutes. In the bottom of a greased 9x13 baking dish, place a layer of tortilla chips. Cover with a layer of meat mixture then a layer of cheese. Repeat this process until the last layer is cheese. Bake for 20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly.

1 lb. lean (at least 80 percent) ground beef 1/4 cup chopped onion 1/4 cup chopped dill pickles 1/2 cup water 1/2 cup ketchup 1 Tbsp. yellow mustard 1/8 tsp. pepper 1 1/2 cups shredded American cheese (6 oz.)

1 can (8 oz.) Pillsburyâ&#x201E;˘ refrigerated Crescent Dough Sheet 1 egg, beaten 1 Tbsp. sesame seed Heat oven to 375 degrees. In 10-inch nonstick skillet, cook beef and onion over medium-high heat 5 to 7 minutes, stirring frequently, until thoroughly cooked; drain. Stir in pickles, water, ketchup, mustard and pepper. Spoon beef mixture into 11x7-inch (2-quart) glass baking dish. Sprinkle with cheese.

Unroll dough; press into 12x8-inch rectangle. Cut into 6 squares; place on top of cheese. Brush with egg; sprinkle with sesame seed. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until deep golden brown.

Crock Pot Breakfast Casserole 1 bag 26 oz. frozen hash browns 12 eggs 1 cup milk 1 tablespoon ground mustard 1- 16 oz. roll sausage Salt and pepper 16 oz. bag shredded cheddar cheese

Spray crock pot and evenly spread hash browns at the bottom. Crack 12 eggs in a large bowl. Mix well and slowly using a whisk. Add the milk. Sprinkle in the ground mustard. Add plenty of salt and fresh pepper. Mix well and set aside. Cook the sausage on high heat, drain and set aside. Add sausage on top of hash browns. Put an entire bag of cheese on top of the sausage. Mix inside crock pot. Pour egg mixture over everything in the crock pot. Using a wooden spoon, spread evenly. Turn the crock pot on low for 6-8 hours.

Philly Cheesesteak Crescent Ring 2 tubes of crescent rolls 1 medium sized onion, sliced 1 bell pepper, sliced 1 – 8 oz. cream cheese 1/3 cup beef broth 3/4 pound of roast beef from the deli, chopped 1/4 pound of thinly sliced provolone (I get mine from the deli) 2 Tbsp. butter Salt and pepper to taste Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Melt the butter in a skillet on medium high heat. Saute the onion and bell pepper until tender, about 10 minutes. Stir in the cream cheese and beef broth, continuing to stir until the cream cheese is melted. Mix in the chopped roast beef. Season with salt and pepper. In a large round casserole dish or on a large pizza pan, lay out your crescent rolls, wide ends in the center, and points overlapping, making a wreath-like shape.

Scoop in the Philly cheesesteak mixture, then top with the sliced provolone cheese. Fold over the point ends of the crescent rolls completing your crescent ring. Bake for 20 minutes, or until the crescent dough is lightly browned.

1/3 cup milk 1/2 cup butter or margarine Icing: 2/3 cup peanut butter 1 cup milk chocolate chips

Begin my putting a layer of Club Crackers in a 13 x 9 pan, I can fit 24 crackers in. In a saucepan on the stove, combine the caramel filling ingredients. Bring to a boil, continue to stir and boil for approximately 5 minutes (I usually go a little less). The mixture will be caramel like and pull away from the sides of the pan. Pour over the crackers, being very careful, the mixture is extremely hot.

Immediately top with another layer of Club Crackers, pressing down slightly Place in fridge to chill for at least 30 minutes Icing Combine peanut butter and chocolate chips in small bowl. Microwave for 1 minute, stir well (cook a little longer if needed) and frost crackers.
