A new beginning Schmit family starts dairy operation in leased facilities

WATERTOWN, S.D. – At a time when many see difďƒžculties, others see opportunities. John and Tonya Schmit saw the recent slump in milk prices as their opportunity to get started in the dairy business.

The couple and their ďƒžve sons, Dalton, 20, Kayden, 17, Logan, 16, Cameron, 12, and Reid, 2, now milk 60 cows on their dairy near Watertown, S.D. “My dad, Kenny, milked about 30 cows when I was growing up,â€? John said. “He exited the business in 2005 when a storm destroyed his dairy barn.â€?

After graduating from Lake Area Technical Institute with a degree in agricultural business, John took jobs with area farmers. “This gave me some valuable insights. I learned what to do and what not to do,� John said.

While he was working for dairy farmers, one thought kept pushing its way to the front of John’s mind: He would like to

someday have a dairy of his own. “I wanted to be my own boss and build something for our boys,� John said.

Tonya, who works as a paraprofessional at the Castlewood School District, was a big supporter of John’s idea. “I grew up on a beef and hog farm at Burke, S.D.,�

Tonya said. “I would sometimes milk cows for a neighbor, so I understood cattle and dairy farming. John and I both felt that dairy farming would be the best way to make a living and raise our family.�

John agreed. “We knew that we couldn’t afford to buy a dairy,� John said. “So, we decided to start out by renting. We thought that getting into dairying when milk prices are low would work to our advantage. And, commodity prices are pretty favorable at this time.�

John and Tonya were able to secure a lease on the farmstead where Randy Schweer had operated his registered Holstein dairy. The acreage

The Schmidts then began to search for a lender. “It was a challenge to ďƒžnd a banker to work with us,â€?

John said. “Some of the bankers we approached had very

little idea about how a modern dairy farm operates.�

The delays the Schmits endured while securing a buyer for their milk and ďƒžnding a bank willing to ďƒžnance their dairy dream ended up working to their beneďƒžt.

“Because of the milk price situation, we probably saved a couple of hundred dollars per head when we bought our cattle,” John said.

Fortune would smile on the Schmit family again when they learned that Ben Post, a dairyman from Chandler, Minn., wanted to sell his herd.

“Ben has had a closed herd for many years and has worked hard on developing his cows’ genetics,” John said.

“His herd was exactly what we were looking for.”

The Schmits needed to refurbish their rented dairy facilities, which had sat empty for three years. They purchased a used vacuum pump, milk tank and pipeline. They installed new stall dividers and attended to numerous details.

“I was working full time for a neighboring farmer while we were renovating the barn,” John said. “There were times when I would still be working in the barn at midnight.”

On the evening of June 29, the Schmits milked for the rst time in their refurbished dairy barn. That milking went relatively smoothly, but disaster almost destroyed their dreams the next morning.

“We were doing our rst morning milking when I noticed that the vacuum pump sounded funny,” John said. “I went to turn off the pump and the fuse box was spouting sparks and ames. I shut off the electricity to the farmstead, grabbed a bucket of water and threw it into the fuse box. Luckily, that was

enough to knock down the re.”

Upon inspection, local remen discovered the re had begun to climb the wiring that leads into the barn’s attic.

It is thought the re was started by a buildup of excess moisture in the fuse box.

“If the re had gotten any farther, we might have lost the barn,” John said.

“That would have been the end our dairy operation.”

It took the Schmits and their new herd of Holsteins some time to adjust to each other.

“The rst couple of days were tough,” John said. “Ben had milked in stanchions, and it took the cows a while to adapt to our tie stalls. We were new to the cows, and they were new to us.

But after a few weeks, everyone settled into a comfortable routine.”

The Schmits’ herd is averaging 65 pounds of milk per head per day with 4 percent butterfat. Their somatic cell count is averaging 221,000 and has been as low as 140,000.

“We are still learning,” John said.

“No matter how much you think you know, you can’t ever know everything.

I’m always asking Dad and our neighbors for advice. Dad has been especially helpful with managing our herd heath.”

Tonya has taken charge of calf care.

“Tonya is very in tune to the baby calves,” John said. “During the day, she will text me and ask how a particular calf is doing. This cold, wet fall has made raising baby calves a challenge.”

What is the long-term goal for the Schmit family?

“We would eventually like to buy a place of our own and be able to raise our own feed,” John said. “We wouldn’t want to expand our herd much beyond its current size. We are just a small operation trying to keep a small dairy going. Our biggest goal is to build something for our kids.”

Tonya agreed.

Salmonella: an emerging problem Sockett presents during PDPW Calf Care Connection workshop

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – According to Dr. Donald Sockett, DVM, from the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, salmonella is an emerging problem in the dairy industry.

He presented information about the strains of the bacteria and how to combat them on Nov. 14 during a Calf Care Connection workshop hosted by the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin in Eau Claire, Wis. “The dairy industry provides a perfect environment for salmonella,” Sockett said. “It’s a ticking time-bomb for the industry.”

Sockett pointed to non-sanitary designs of many facilities, which is a problem, particularly at the critical control points such as close-up pens, calving pens, hospital pens, the neonatal calf feed mixing rooms and the calf rearing areas.

Vaccines are available to help prevent against salmonella infections, which Sockett calls an important tool that producers must use; however, he cautions that they can have limited results, ranging from only 25 percent to 60 percent efcacy. Vaccines do not actually provide protection against salmonella infection or prevent fecal shedding of the bacteria from occurring.

According to Sockett, not all salmonella strains behave in the same manner, and in order to determine how to deal with them, the isolates must be serotyped to determine what strain of the bacteria is present.

There are three tiers of salmonella. Tier 1 salmonella are non-invasive strains that cause no problems. Tier 2 salmonella are mildly to moderately

invasive and are the most frequently occurring. They include strains such as Typhimurium and Montevideo. The dairy industry’s current best-practices are highly effective in combatting the stains that make up both Tiers 1 and 2.

The most deadly strains are in Tier 3, which are highly invasive. The salmonella strains Panama, Dublin, Newport and Heidelberg are not effectively com-

batted with the industry’s current bestpractices.

One of the most concerning strains of salmonella to the dairy industry, particularly the dairy beef industry, is Heidelberg. The current outbreak of Heidelberg started in 2015 and peaked during the summers of 2016 and 2017.

Eighty-three percent of the cases reported were in dairy beef calves that had a history of being trucked to a calfraising facility.

“Calves are put under the stress of going to the sale barn, they miss a meal or two, and then they are trucked to the farms,” Sockett said. “They start dying about ve to 10 days after arriving, usually at about seven to 14 days of age.”

The calves typically die within four to eight hours of the rst signs of being ill, and death losses range from 20 percent to 65 percent of a calf group.

Heidelberg is resistant to most drugs, making it difcult to treat.

Salmonella is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be transmitted to humans, and during this outbreak of Heidelberg there have been 56 human cases conrmed throughout 15 states. Of those, 17 required hospitalization and 66 percent were conrmed to have had direct contact with dairy beef calves that were sick with Heidelberg.

According to Sockett, the best treatment is preventative, and he encourages all producers to be conscientious in the details of cleaning and sanitizing their facilities through several easy steps.

By cleaning you remove over 90 percent of the pathogens before you even start disinfecting. I’ll ask people about how they clean their facilities between calves, and they’ll tell me they removed the old bedding and spread barn lime.

That’s not cleaning. Cleaning to a microbiologist is what happens after you remove the bedding.”

Breaking up the biolm layer that covers surfaces is the primary goal of proper cleaning. In cleaning livestock pens and trailers, Sockett does not recommend using a pressure washer because of the possibility of cross-contamination. He recommends taking swabs from the area to be cleaned prior to beginning and using an ATP meter to check the bacteria load in the area. Swabs can be repeated during the cleaning and disinfecting process to ensure the desired results are being achieved with a decrease in the amount of bacteria present with each step.

After removing the bedding material, the rst step is to properly clean to break up the biolm by soaking the affected area thoroughly with hot water. Sockett recommends following that up with an alkaline foam cleaning solution that has a pH that ranges from 11 to 13. After thoroughly soaking the area with the alkaline foam, the solution should be allowed to sit on the surface for at least ve minutes before being rinsed off with cold water.

Then an acid foam cleaner, with a pH of three to four, should be applied using the foam sprayer. That should be allowed to soak for ve more minutes before being rinsed with cold water again. The nal step, after the area is dry, is the application of chlorine dioxide with the foam sprayer.

“Chlorine dioxide is the world’s best sanitizer and disinfectant,” Sockett said. “It works like ozone, but is 1,000 times more soluble in water.”

Sockett cautions not to use chlorine dioxide with warm water, as it has a boiling point of 51.8 degrees Fahrenheit.

Chlorine dioxide eliminates both planktonic and sessile bacteria, migrating into the biolm, destroying the habitat for bacteria. It provides a quick kill against coccidian and cryptosporidium oocysts; giardia cysts; bacterial, yeast and mold spores; salmonella; E. coli; rotavirus and coronavirus.

In addition to these steps, Sockett encourages frequent replacement of boots, replaced at the rst sign of wear. He also advocates wearing shoe covers over boots when entering calf areas.

Proper procedure prevents plight Salfer presents on lactation health in goats at Todd County workshop

LONG PRAIRIE, Minn.

– Jim Salfer spoke at the annual Todd County Area Goat Workshop Nov. 15. The University of Minnesota hosted the workshop for producers interested in learning about goat nutrition, production, reproduction and management.

Salfer works at the U of M Extension regional ofce in St. Cloud, Minn., where he works on their dairy initiative. While his expertise is within the dairy cattle realm, he gave a presentation on milk quality and keeping milking does healthy.

“We dene milk quality through somatic cell counts, bacteria, residues, color, odor and avor,” Salfer said.

He said identifying somatic cells and mastitis are two of the main issues with goat health.

“Somatic cell is not just another way to describe a mastitis cell,” Salfer said. “A somatic cell is a body cell, so they are present all over the animal. We run into issues when the number of body cells is saturating the milk, or when bacteria becomes present and causes mastitis.”

Salfer explained how breed, stage of lactation and milking procedure also impact milk quality.

“Goats have higher somatic cell counts than cows because of the makeup of their cells and their secretion method,” Salfer said. “They also produce in lower quantities, thus making the bacteria to milk ratio much different. Goats can have up to a two million SCC and still be ne.”

“Any liquid that comes in contact with the teat had to come off,” he said. “Bacteria swim. They don’t walk, and

milk is the perfect food for bacteria.”

When preparing for milking, he recommends a dry wipe of the teat, because water can add somatic cells.

“Goats don’t need simulation before milking like cows do,” Salfer said. “Seventy percent of their milk is held in the cistern, or lower part, of the udder, which is the opposite of cows.”

Because the foremilk will be the highest in somatic cell count, Salfer suggests a strip cup even though goats do not show mastitis in a chunky milk manner like cows do.

“Mastitis in goats is more subclinical, so make sure you get those teats dry,” he said.

Wearing gloves is also a smart choice to maintain healthy teats and udders, because farmers’ hands get dry and chapped, and bacteria love the cracks in our hands.

Salfer suggests a post dip as well.

“Post-dipping does two things,” he said. “When you take the unit off the teat, the teat will still be wet with milk and bacteria love milk. The dip will replace that milk with disinfectant and seal the teat end with disinfectant.”

A veterinarian perspective on goat health

LONG PRAIRIE, Minn. – Dr. Maggie Wehseler spoke to a crowded room Nov. 15 about her perspective on goat health as a veterinarian. The presentation was part of the Todd County Area Goat workshop, hosted by the University of Minnesota for producers interested in learning about goat nutrition, production and reproduction.

She rst established the understanding of a VCPR, which she recommends for every farm.

“A veterinarian-client-patient-relationship is essential for proper care for your animals, and is basically just a relationship with your vet,” Wehseler said. “In a nutshell, your vet needs to know your animals and facility in order for you to use and purchase prescription drugs.”

The ve most common reasons Wehseler visits goat farms are parasites, reproduction and pregnancy diagnosis, common ailments and dystocia.

One of the most common parasites she sees is Haemonchus contortus, also known as the barber pole worm because of its spiral shape. It causes anemia and death in goats. While some may think scheduled deworming is the way to go, Wehseler warns against the practice.

“Scheduled deworming is outdated and leads to parasite resistance and dewormer lack of efcacy,” she said.

Instead, she opts for FAMACHA, an anemia scoring system used to determine the need to deworm.

“If your goats are on pasture, this is going to be one of the biggest issues you will deal with,” Wehseler said.

“Utilize your veterinarian.”

Concerning reproduction, she said there are synchronization protocols

available to cycle goats out of season.

“Reproduction drugs are prescription drugs, and you must have a VCPR in place to purchase,” Wehseler said.

For pregnancy diagnosis, ultrasound scanning is her preferred method for cost effectiveness and valuable results.

“First of all, it tells you she’s pregnant as long as it’s 30 days past breeding,” she said. “We get an idea of how many kids are in there so we can tailor our nutrition program as needed to prevent pregnancy toxemia. This will also tell you when the kids are due.”

Common ailments in goats, both kids and adults, are diarrhea and pneumonia. While diarrhea is common in milk fed and recently weaned kids, pneumonia is often due to stress, weather, stocking density and poor ventilation.

“E. coli and crypto are most common causes of diarrhea in milk-fed kids, so colostrum is extremely important in the rst ve days,” Wehseler said. “Coccidia is more common in recently weaned kids that are commingled with different ages. Even a month can make a big difference when they’re that young.”

When it comes to pneumonia, they typically try to manage their way out of it.

“Sometimes over the counter drugs work if the disease is caught early,” she said. “But if it doesn’t work or it comes back I recommend Naxcel for milking goats.”

Dystocia, or difcult kidding, is another issue for goats.

“Goats should not be in labor for days,” she said. “Sometimes you don’t know if she’s in labor or not, but watch for the signs. I recommend calling the vet and being gentle when untangling kids.”

Overall, she urges farmers to engage veterinarians in the discussion and not to try to do it all alone.

“Have a conversation with your veterinarians,” Wehseler said. “That’s what we’re here for – to help you. We do this because we love it.”

University of Minnesota wins Louisville Dairy Cattle Judging Contest fourth year in a row For the fourth year in a row, the University of Minnesota placed rst overall in the collegiate dairy cattle judging contest held on November 4 at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE), Louisville, Ky. The margin of victory was 30 points over second place Virginia Tech with three Minnesota team members among the top six individuals. Eighteen 4-year universities competed in the contest. Teams from the University of Minnesota have placed rst overall in the Louisville collegiate contest 7 of

the past 9 years.

In addition to placing rst overall, the University of Minnesota team was rst in oral reasons by an 8-point margin, was rst in the Jersey breed, and placed among the top ve teams in all ve breeds. Team members were Rachel Coyne, Spring Valley, Wis.; Kayla Leiding, Fountain, Minn.; Lauren Hendel, Caledonia, Minn. and Tanner Morrison, Peterson, Minn.

Get to know Holly Groell of Osseo, Wis. to River Falls, Oshkosh, Madison and Eau Claire.

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I’m involved in FFA and 4-H. In FFA, I’m involved in doing our pancake breakfast and judging competitions. We do the CDE contest at University of Wisconsin-River Falls every year. I’ve been a member of the Russell Corner Badgers 4-H Club since I was 10 years old. I’m the club president this year, and I’ve been the club treasurer twice and the also served as the reporter.

What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? I’ve learned time management. You have to prioritize when you are involved in lots of activities. I’ve learned the importance of keeping in mind the purpose of what you are doing and to not to get caught up in the politics surrounding things.

Who do you look up to? My parents and friends. My parents are hard working and do what it takes to live and make a living. They’ve taught me to work hard. I also like how my friends live life the way they want and don’t tell other people what they should do or how they should be.

Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? It’s a family tradition to be in FFA and 4-H. I like all the opportunities available in the two activities. 4-H is my favorite. I like being able to show and be involved in other projects like photography, creative writing and foods. Besides dairy, I also show rabbits and market goats and lambs.

Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. I like reading a lot, especially fantasy and sci-.

Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. I’ve shown dairy at our county fair for the past two years. I like being able to work with the animals and with my brother. It’s cool to see the improvements I’ve made, especially in showmanship in the two years I’ve shown. I’ve been able to travel through 4-H. I’ve visited historical places on the East Coast. I’ve also gone to Washington, D.C. I’ve been selected to go to state 4-H congress next summer.

Tell us some of your duties on the farm. I help with taking care of all the animals, feeding and watering them.

The Dairy Discussions: Risk Management and Labor Issues program is set for Tuesday, Dec. 4 at the Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach - Sioux County ofce in Orange City.

Dairy Discussions: Risk Management and Labor Issues grew out of concerns expressed by the Western Iowa Dairy Alliance (WIDA) board as to the hardships of nding qualied labor and keeping them in a depressed milk market. ICE raids earlier this year and the political climate in general, have heightened stress levels. Discussions will also include consistent labor management and how that relates to cow management, risk management tools, and a market update.

Dr. Hugo Ramirez, ISU Extension Dairy Specialist, will outline the importance of consistency when handling animals and teaching employees the reasons for specic protocols. He will discuss why farm guidebooks and manuals are especially vital in a tight labor market.

The second topic is risk management education, especially information on the new Dairy Revenue Protection program, LGM, contracts and other risk management tools. Ron Mortensen from Dairy Gross Margin, LLC, will lead the discussion and answer questions.

Bob Naerebout, with the Idaho Dairymen’s Association, will discuss responsible immigration reform. His role with the Idaho Dairymen’s Association is to lead the IDA in its gov-

Many of those boards’ primary goal is to see responsible immigration reform successfully moved forward. Naerebout currently serves on the Executive Committees of both the National Immigration Forum and the Agricultural Coalition for Immigration Reform. He is also a committee member of the University of Idaho Latino Advisory Committee and the National Milk Producers Federation Immigration Taskforce. Through his engagements surrounding immigration reform, Naerebout and the IDA have become widely recognized as a leader in the immigration reform debate.

ISU Extension Dairy Specialist Fred M. Hall will discuss current trends in the milk market and offer some useful benchmarks for dairymen as they evaluate their enterprise.

The day will begin with registration at 9 a.m. at the ISU Extension and Outreach Sioux County ofce located at 400 Central Avenue Northwest in Orange City, and will conclude around 2 p.m.

There is no registration fee, but pre-registration is required by calling the ISU Extension and Outreach Sioux County ofce at 712-737-4230. Deadline for registration is 12 noon on Friday, Nov. 30.

Register today for the Midwest Dairy Day: Advanced Calving Clinic for Dairy and Beef held on Thursday, Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Iowa’s Dairy Center located at 1527 Highway 150 S, in Calmar, Iowa.

This event is a collaborative effort between Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, the Northeast Iowa Dairy Foundation and Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC). This year’s event will provide an array of sessions on advanced calving, including a unique opportunity for a hands-on experience with a life-sized cow model. Participants choose to attend one of two different blocks of sessions: one block focuses on dairy cows and the other block focuses on beef cows. Dairy and beef producers, students and industry members are encouraged to attend.

Sessions in both the Dairy and Beef block will include: – “Handling Dystocia with Frosty” A hands-on experience with Dr. Caitlin Wiley, D.V.M., and clinical assistant professor. Dr. Wiley will share tips and tricks to help ease calving season and difcult calvings. She will use “Frosty,” the life-size cow model to demonstrate various techniques to simplify pulling malpresentations to result in more live calves.

– “First Aid for the Cow and Calf” Led by Postville Vet Clinic Veterinarian, Dr. Kia Knutson, this presentation will discuss and demonstrate ways to provide rst aid to both cow and calf around the time of delivery. Providing emergency care before a vet can arrive helps to ensure a healthy start and reduce fresh cow incidences.

– “Neonatal Calf Care” Presented by Dr. Grant Dewell, Iowa State University Extension and outreach beef veterinarian/associate professor, along with Jenn Bentley, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach dairy specialist; presentation discusses colostrum management, rst-day care and vaccine protocols.

The block of sessions for the Advanced Calving Clinic for Dairy will also include “Successful Transition – Stacking the Deck in the Cow’s Favor” with Dr. Matt Boyle, dairy technical service veterinarian with Zoetis. Dr. Boyle’s presentation will focus on key objective measures that help predict successful transition into lactation.

The Advanced Calving Clinic for Beef block of sessions will also include “Beef Cow Nutrition” with Katy Lippolis, Iowa State University assistant professor and Extension cow-calf specialist. Lippolis will discuss the challenges that beef cows will experience surrounding calving and how to use nutrition and management to ensure healthy calves, successful rebreeding rates and improved performance.
