Hard work pays off on the eld, farm

Stransky brothers, Seykora help Owatonna football team advance to state nals

OWATONNA, Minn.

– The Owatonna football team advanced to the Section AAAAA State tournament.

Three of the team members – brothers, Joseph and Zach Stransky, along with teammate, Matt Seykora – have worked hard to help the Huskies get to state while also continuing their responsibilities at home on each of their family’s dairy farms.

The Stranskys play on defense for Owatonna. Joseph is a senior defensive lineman and Zach is a sophomore and defensive back and linebacker.

When they are not on the football eld, they are helping their parents, Reid and Daria, and grandparents, Joe and Ev, on their 100-cow dairy farm where they also farm 3,500 acres of corn and soybeans.

“I am fortunate enough to have younger brothers and parents who are able to ll in for me when I am busy,” Joseph said.

The same is true for Zach.

“Sports come rst so I go to practice right away after school and then depending on what’s going on around the farm I usually get something to eat and then go see what there is to do outside,” Zach said.

However, each of them have have farm responsibilities every day. Joseph has to clean the barn in the mornings, while Zach helps out where he is needed.

“Most of the time I help out in the shop xing or servicing equipment,” Joseph said. “I haul out grain contracts, too.

Then help plant and harvest as well.”

“I do a little bit of everything,” Zach said. “I help with barn chores in the morning, I also help with the crop side of things by driving anything from combine to semi to ripping in the fall and driving cultivator in the spring. I also help with xing equipment and that kind of stuff, too.”

Joseph Stransky Senior, Defensive Lineman Playing together is special for these brothers.

“I watched my brother make it [to the state tournament] last year and it was super fun just watching, but now that I get to play myself I’m super excited,” Zach said. “Getting to start and playing alongside my brother are some of my favorite memories playing football.”

They are excited to share these memories and are proud of their accomplishments.

“It’s awesome to be in the championship game,” Joseph said. “Knowing that you made it to the nal week and that you are a top team in the state. The

Owatonna beat Elk River 39-8 on Nov. 16 to advance to the championship game.

“I watched my brother play in and win the championship last year and it was so much fun just watching, I’m super excited to be a part of it this year,” Zach said. “You could hear Elk River cheering through the wall in the locker room and that really got me red up before the game started, and then to go out and

“It’s a great payoff,” Joseph said. “We put in a lot of work all summer long lifting, going to team camps, and going through two-a-days.”

Matt Seykora, son of Brian and Marybeth, also competes on the Owatonna football team as a sophomore outside linebacker and running back.

He lives on a dairy farm south of Owatonna where he milks 50 cows and manages 600 acres of land with his family.

“There’s not much time to work during the week because I get home so late and then have to do homework,” he said. “My parents are very understanding of my schedule and understand that sports are very important to me.”

He feels excited to play in the championship game and to be part of a team that is so successful.

“I’m really excited and know [the tournament] will be a great experience,” Seykora said. “I’ve had a lot of fun this season, working hard and being able to join this team. It’s special and I’m grateful to be a part of it.”

Owatonna will take on St. Thomas Academy Nov. 24 at U.S. Bank Stadium for the Section AAAAA State Title.

Patient mindset leads Anderson to successful operation

RICEVILLE, Iowa – Justin Anderson loved milking cows on his family’s dairy farm. When his parents sold the cows, Anderson was left wondering about his future in farming.

After graduating college in 2008, he purchased a herd of Holsteins from Minnesota and rented his parents’ farm near Riceville, Iowa.

Today, Anderson and his wife, Molly, milk 50 Holsteins in a stanchion barn and have been able to sustain the farm with patience and precise planning.

“I guess I knew going in that slow and steady wins the race,” Anderson said. “It’s really tempting to spend a lot of money, but you need to stay within your size, and I’m the kind of guy who would rather spend time with my cows versus having to worry about employees taking care of the cattle. So, I don’t ever see myself getting big enough that we would have to hire labor. I’d just as soon

When Molly is not working part time as a DHIA inspector or soil tester, she helps with chores and is in charge of raising the calves.

The cows are housed in a bedded pack shed in the winter and are rotationally grazed in the summer on 40 acres of pasture. Anderson also farms 240 acres of organic alfalfa, corn, soybeans

and oats. They prefer to raise the cows conventionally for now and continue with the organic crops.

ConƟnued from ANDERSON | Page 6 “We do t well with the organic dairy,” Anderson said. “I don’t have a lot of health problems with my cows being they’re on bedded packs and pasture. Usually my somatic cell count stays pretty low year round that way.”

They are able to keep the herd’s SCC below 100,000 with a rolling herd average around 26,000 pounds of milk.

When Anderson began farming 10 years ago, he knew he needed to upgrade the facilities and equipment to be successful.

“We invested in a lot of hay equipment right away,” he said. “We bought a nice round baler, rake and bale wrapper. It made putting up high quality hay a lot easier and that led to increased production.”

They also installed drive through feeding in the shed, and Anderson purchased a bale processor.

“We also switched from dry hay to alfalfa baleage

for feed,” he said. “We’ve put up better feed, which leads to better production for the cows.”

Because they focused on better equipment, they have not updated the facilities, and Anderson still milks in the 26-stall stanchion barn. He hopes to put in a small parlor within the next year, depending on milk price.

As Anderson reminisces on the past 10 years of dairy farming, he said he made the right decision.

“I don’t have many regrets the last 10 years,” Anderson said. “Sometimes you get to thinking we should be bigger and more efcient, but then we start looking into it and you know, really with the way prices are right now, the scale doesn’t matter. Everybody is in a tight spot.”

He said they have an added income with their organic grain.

“It has been an added blessing to have the organic

grain markets,” Anderson said. “I wouldn’t change a thing that way. We’re pretty good at farming [organically], and it just seems to work for us personally.”

He does offer a bit of advice for his past self, focusing on patience.

“I would emphasize building slow and steady is the way to go,” Anderson said. “Keep your nances in order, too, so when the time does come to add or make a quality purchase, you’re able to do it.”

This year, Anderson is thankful for his family.

“I’ve got two brothers and my dad will come help if I need it,” he said. “I’m also thankful for my wife and the cows, and being able to work with my wife on the dairy farm. We both enjoy working with the cows.

We’re thankful to be doing what we love for a living even though it is tough sometimes.”

September milk use up, demand for cheese higher

The Agriculture Department’s monthly Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Outlook, issued November 15, mirrored milk price and production projections in the November 8 World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report.

But there were “signicant revisions to milk cow numbers, with downward revisions of 2,000, 17,000, and 21,000 head for June, July, and August, respectively. NASS estimates that cow numbers fell to an average of 9.367 million head in September, 12,000 less than August and 32,000 less than September 2017.

Milk per cow was 1,855 pounds, 30 pounds higher than September 2017.”

“Due to revisions of cow numbers for July and August and the fall in cow numbers reported in September, the estimate for the size of the milking herd in the fourth quarter of 2018 was lowered 35,000 head to 9.365 million. Milk per cow was forecast slightly higher for the fourth quarter, at 5,740 pounds. The lower forecast for the size of the milking herd more than offsets the increased yield per cow, resulting in a fourth-quarter milk production forecast of 53.8 billion pounds, 100 million pounds lower than last month’s forecast.”

“A smaller milking herd in late 2018 is expected to persist into 2019,” says USDA, ‘therefore, the milk cow forecast was lowered to 9.375 million head, 35,000 less than last month’s forecast. However, with increased culling of the herd, higher milking efciency is expected, motivating an increase in the milk per cow forecast to 23,565 pounds. With these changes, overall milk output for 2019 is now forecast at 220.9 billion pounds, 500 million pounds lower than the last forecast.”

Meanwhile; September milk use was up from September 2017. Demand for cheese was mostly higher, while NFDM and butter were lower.

FC Stone’s Dave Kurzawski wrote in his November 12 Early Morning Update that “These numbers, in and of themselves won’t move markets, but it’s interesting to see demand weakness in butter and powder (fairly stable prices over the past few months) and small gains in cheese demand (fairly weak prices over the past few months).”

September American cheese demand was down 2.2 percent from a year ago and down 7.8 percent versus previous-month levels. Demand for the “other” cheese category increased 2.0 percent from 2017 but was 1.7 percent lower than August. Total cheese use was up 0.3 percent from a year ago but 4.1 percent below August. American cheese use was up 2.7 percent

and other than American cheese was up 2.8 percent, which put total cheese use up 2.7 percent.

September nonfat dry milk use slipped 0.7 percent and butter demand was down 8.6 percent from a year ago. Month-to-month, commercial disappearance of butter was down 8.0 percent while nonfat dry milk dropped 18.2 percent. But, nonfat dry milk use was up 8.6 percent in 2018 and butter was up 2.0 percent.

CME dairy prices strengthened the week before Thanksgiving. The 40-pound Cheddar blocks fell November 12 to $1.35 per pound, lowest price since May 25, 2016, then rebounded and closed Friday at $1.4525, up 7 1/4-cents on the week but 16 3/4-cents below a year ago. The 500-pound Cheddar barrels nished at $1.36, up 5 1/2-cents on the week, 26 3/4-cents below a year ago, and 9 1/4-cents below the blocks. 28 cars of block were sold on the week and 11 of barrel.

Dairy Market News says cheese contacts are “concerned about the potentiality of lasting market recuperation, following a bearish onset to fourth quarter 2018.”

Midwestern cheese producers have downshifted production and holiday work schedules are lighter than previous years. This has helped busier producers obtain spot milk at lower costs, with prices ranging $3 under to $1 over Class, a noticeable slide in the price range from week 45. “Some cheese plant managers who planned to wait until after the holiday to corral favorably priced milk loads were met with deals they could not refuse,” says DMN Cheese production continues to be active in the West, with higher milk output noted in many areas.

Retailers, food service managers, and pizza manufacturers are taking a bit more cheese however, “holiday buyers haven’t been manifesting themselves that much despite steady to lower cheese prices.”

The strong value of the dollar is not helping with international sales either. In addition, the weaker euro value and existing trade tariffs on U.S. products are pushing some buyers and end users toward European markets. Processors hope that as the holidays get closer they will be able to sell more product and decrease the inventories they are currently holding, according to DMN. CME butter jumped 3 1/4-cents Monday, dropped 2 1/2-cents Tuesday, then regained 4 cents Wednesday, a jump some attributed to a re at a butter plant in Wisconsin, and closed Friday at $2.2750 per pound, up 8 1/4-cents on the week and 6 cents from a year ago. 18 cars traded hands on the week.

Butter stocks vary by producer, but some are relaying very tight supplies with no spot availability. “Butter markets continue to provide evidence of what analysts have been relaying from second quarter to present: butter markets are steady, typically range bound between $2.20 and $2.40 per pound.”

Western butter makers report that print orders have maintained a strong pace but warn that the current swiftness will not likely continue to the end of the year. Some contacts feel the holiday pipeline is getting lled and a slower tempo is near. Cream supplies have tightened in the West, but are still adequate. Butter makers, trying to manage inventories, are weighing options, looking to nd the right balance between churning and selling cream. Some manufacturers are nding a market for bulk butter further east, where cream is less available.

Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk closed Friday at 88 1/2-cents per pound, 2 1/2-cents higher on the week and 16 cents above a year ago, with 13 cars nding new homes on the week.

Speaking of powder; the EU Commission accepted bids to sell 30,067 metric tons of skim milk powder (SMP) out of its intervention program last week for the tender closing Tuesday, Nov. 6. The lowest accepted bid was about 65 cents per pound. Up until this point about 190,000 metric tons or about 419 million pounds have been sold out of intervention. This older product may be keeping fresh powder prices contained, says FC Stone.

The infant cash dry whey market slumped to 42 1/2-cents per pound on Wednesday, lowest price in 16 weeks, but closed Friday at 43 cents per pound, down a half-cent on the week, with a hefty 32 cars trading hands on the week.

The latest Crop Progress report shows 84 percent of US corn is now harvested as of the week ending November 11, up from 76 percent the previous week and 81 percent a year ago, and compares to 87 percent for the ve-year average.

Soybeans are at 88 percent harvested, up from 83 percent the previous week but compares to 93 percent a year ago and 93 percent in the ve year average.

Cotton is at 54 percent harvested, up from 49 percent the previous week and compares to 63 percent a year ago, and 61 percent for the ve year average.

The nation’s Number 1 milk producing state became a part of the Federal Milk Market Order system on November 1. California will see its rst Federal Class I milk price on November 21 and next month will its Class 4a and 4b prices become Federal Class III and Class IV prices.

In the November 19 Dairy Radio Now broadcast, I asked Dave Kurzawski about the ramications for dairy producers in other states from adding 3 million pounds plus of milk per month to the system. He stated that, at rst glance, it looks like California dairy producers will see about 40 to 60 cents per hundredweight added to their cheese milk price, as a result of becoming a Federal order. “Theoretically, if you make more money you’ll make more milk,” he answered, “and that could keep a damper on all milk prices for the nation.”

But Kurzawski says we can’t assume that because that’s not the environment California producers are in.

A total of 45 industry groups and stakeholders were invited to provide testimony, including Michael Dykes, D.V.M., president and CEO of the International Dairy Foods Association.

Dykes outlined the importance of global trade and new free trade agreements to the U.S. dairy industry.

He noted that the U.S. now benets from a dairy trade surplus of more than $2 billion, after being a net importer of dairy products only a decade ago, and that American companies export dairy products to more than 140 countries.

“Free trade agreements like the USMCA that open markets and lower trade barriers are crucial to continuing this trend of growing U.S. dairy exports,” he said. “Maintaining and expanding access to international markets is essential for the future success of the U.S. dairy industry.”

In politics the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) called on Congress to make passing a new farm bill a top priority in its lame-duck session. Jim Mulhern, NMPF president and CEO, stated that “dairy farmers harmed by low prices would benet from the certainty and improvements likely to be part of the nal law. Given the sustained low prices dairy farmers have faced, coupled with uncertainty in agricultural trade policy, it is more important than ever that Congress quickly enact the 2018 Farm Bill before adjourning for the year.”

He said the House and Senate-passed bills include “important reforms to dairy policy, making the Margin Protection Program a more effective safety net for producers and expands producer access to additional risk management options.”

the climate for doing business there is not such that it would “foster a material growth in production to the point that it will be noticeable.”

“A lot of damage has been done to California dairy producers over time between public policy as well as xed costs,” he said. The Federal order will help alleviate some of that potentially but “right now it’s looking like it’s a small help.”

When asked if he saw better dairy prices ahead from Christmas and New Year holiday buying, he answered; “This has been the year without a holiday rush.” He said the seasonally typical drop in cheese prices came ve to six weeks early and “You can’t have a year without a holiday rush and then expect to have a really weak December, January, and February.”

While he admits that could happen, “The reality is that there’s going to be a pipeline rell because the reason that cheese prices have been able to fall during the holiday rush season is because manufacturers and end users have worked off inventories. At some point they’re going to want to replenish those inventories and it’ll probably come when you least expect it,” he concluded. He added a hopeful note in his November 12 Early Morning Update; “The booming economy is running headlong into what could be a record-breaking retail holiday season.”

Looking globally, the EU continued efforts focused on enhancing dairy trade with other countries.

The International Trade Committee of the European parliament voted in favor of ratifying the EU-Japan agreement and the EU-Singapore agreement. January through August EU cheese output increased 1.8 percent from the same period last year, according to Eurostat.

Looking down under; DMN reports that Australia’s spring is moving closer. “There was little rain in most of the country the last two weeks. Hay from the new season is reaching the market. This is welcome to many dairy producers who have low carryover stocks.

Feed grain prices remain at unwelcome high levels in much of Australia. Absent more rain in coming weeks, there is little expectation of relief for grain supplies and prices, especially in northern Australia.”

“New Zealand has experienced not only higher milk production than had been projected, but high levels maintaining longer than had been expected,” according to DMN. “There was a high production peak, which has probably passed, but higher than normal milk volumes are continuing, even as production seasonally goes down. By some measures higher milk production is benecial, but now that is weighing on New Zealand dairy producer pay prices.

A secondary factor is that the sustained higher milk output has led to scheduling more production of higher volume dairy powders to absorb the milk volumes.

Speaking of international markets; Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) members accepted 20 offers of export assistance this week from CWT to help capture contracts to sell 2.048 million pounds of Cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese, 606,271 pounds of butter and 879,645 pounds of whole milk powder.

The product is contracted for delivery in Asia, Central America, the Middle East, North Africa, Oceania and South America through April 2019 and brings CWT’s 2018 export sales to 53.777 million pounds of

Thanksgiving is here and the normal pre-holiday milk price rally has yet to show up. Spot cheddar markets and CME Group futures appear to be trying to stabilize. Chart technicians are likely feeling more upbeat that a bottom may be forming as some of the longer-term technical signals are showing oversold conditions. Basically, this means there are limited short sellers wanting to enter the market to push prices lower. All the market needs now is willing buyers and prices will rally, even if it is only a dead cat bounce.

Dairy fundamentals remain lethargic with market participants waiting for fresh news to move prices.

Futures continue to tell dairy producers that there is too much milk and that production needs to slow, as most dairy operations will not see a positive monthly cashflow until sometime in the third quarter in 2019.

Historically, most major milk price cycle lows form 2 to 5 months prior to the lowest milk production month of that cycle. Prices also tend to start to recover as world production declines below prior year levels. As the markets move closer to a level where world demand

remains at or above prior year, and milk production drops below that same period, less financial pain is needed to balance an over supplied market.

Soybean prices remain under pressure as talk of a near one billion bushel carryout minimizes rally opportunities.

Protein markets responded positively to news that China and the U.S. may be getting closer to fixing their trade issues. It is likely that Brazil soybean growers have more to lose than U.S. producers have to gain if tariffs are removed, as Brazil soybean prices will likely fall faster than U.S. prices rise.

Corn basis values are firming as harvest wraps up.

Feed users should have been able to cover needs at a respectable buyer basis prior to harvest, while sellers may get an opportunity to establish firmer basis values on their futures short hedges.

Tenant farmers tend to Jersey cows

Colwells raise high-type milking herd, use abundant grass

REDRUTH, Cornwall, England – Most dairy producers can agree that too much grass is never a bad thing.

Abundant grass paired with good weather conditions and functional cows makes for one dairyman’s quintessential dairying situation along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. “[Dairy farming] is all so unpredictable and never boring,” Michael Colwell said.

Michael and his wife, Claire, and their children, Ellen, 10, and Henry, 8, milk 240 Jersey cows near Redruth in Cornwall County, England.

Michael’s parents, John and Jenny, moved to their rst dairy farm in 1975 when Michael was 15 months old.

“They were tenants on Cornwall County Councils estate,” Michael said.

“Council farms were originally rented to returning First World War soldiers, but they are now a way for youngsters to get into farming in their own right in the United Kingdom. They purchased Jerseys, as they were half the price of Friesians, and we have never looked back.”

Upon graduating from university and traveling to Australia, New Zealand and the western United States through the World Jersey Cattle Bureau, Michael and his family moved to a larger council farm 20 miles further west in Cornwall in 1998.

The family was met with tragedy in 2000 when John died of cancer and milk prices were crashing.

“So, we turned to spring block

calving to try and take advantage of the cheap, copious quantities of grass we can grow in the United Kingdom,” Michael said.

Michael and Claire married in 2004 and moved to their current council farm in 2005. The farm is comprised of 192 acres, and the couple has purchased 93 surrounding acres as well. They both work full time on the farm and employ two individuals who complete most of the milking.

The herd is milked twice a day in a swing-over herringbone parlor complete with automatic identication and shedding gates. The cows are housed four to ve months of the year in free stalls and spend the rest of the year grazing.

Milking takes place at 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. Calving starts in March, with 200 cows calving in, and continues into July.

“There is also a lot of winter feed made during this period,” Michael said.

“Electric fences to be moved, articial and organic fertilizer to be spread. Then, from October onwards there is two to three hours of yardwork a day when the cows start coming in as the weather gets too wet and cold to grow grass. Not much family time from March to July, but August to February, lots of family time.”

“Apart from the 1.3 (metric) tons of concentrate feed, which is purchased in bulk from a local feed merchant and usually runs from 12 percent protein in early spring through to 21 percent protein when the cows are housed, it is all grazed or conserved perennial ryegrass,” Michael said.

Michael said the area is teaming with grass for feed, and other farmers produce corn, wheat, barley, potatoes, cauliower, cabbage and broccoli.

He said there are also beef and lamb

producers.

Since the farm is located 1.5 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, the Colwells experience mild south westernly winds most of the year. The summertime temperatures reach around 78 degrees Fahrenheit while winters stay above 32 degrees.

“Snow is rare, but we get a lot of damp, dark days in winter or summer,” Michael said. “We get 40 inches of rainfall spread throughout the year, so Turn to ENGLAND | Page 15

Michael said Cornwall has a robust dairy industry, with 500 or so dairy farms in the county alone.

“We have an excellent infrastructure with lots of choice from all the main dealers,” he said. “Nearby, we have one conventional 100-cow herd milked twice a day who grazes April to October. One farm is a nearly 400cow herd housed all the time with seven robot milkers. Another is milked once a day, so quite a range of systems.”

The Colwells sell their milk to a European farmers cooperative called Arla. The milk is processed into a variety of products from clotted cream, a 54 percent fat cooked solid cream, to soft cheese, cheddar cheese and milk powder. “[The co-op] owns several factories in the area as well as working with other factories, hence the diverse destinations for our milk,” Michael said.

The Colwells breed for high-type cows focusing on udder quality, chest width and body depth, and good feet and legs.

“Our cows sometimes walk over three miles a day,” he said. “We don’t look at indexes much. Rather, more pedigree when selecting bulls.”

The Colwell family shows select animals from their herd, which includes around 85 Excellent cows with one 95-point cow and ve 94-point cows.

This year, their 65 heifers averaged a score of 82.5.

“We win shows and make money and go on holiday at least twice a year,” he said. “I think we are doing something right.”

Despite the thriving dairy economy in the Cornwall area, Michael said he is worried about consumers’ growing distaste for dairy.

“Vegans, environmentalists and scientists who have so little knowledge about dairy farming and its environmental impact, but still run us into the ground,” Michael said of what his worries entail. “And, dairy farmers, ourselves, for being so apathetic to this and not proactively tackling this false information.”

To one day move from tenant to dairy farm owner is Michael’s dream as he hopes to continue increasing the quality of his cow herd and improving his grazing management.

SHELL LAKE, Wis. – The milk pump ipped on at 6 a.m. on a frosty Friday morning at Rick and Dory Kidder’s farm southwest of Shell Lake, Wis. As the sun came up through the

snow-coated trees and buildings, it illuminated a world coated in winter’s shimmering glitter.

Unfortunately for the Kidders, who milk 32 cows, the snow from the night before threw a wrench in their plans for the day.

“We farm with our neighbor, Sam Mechtel, who milks 80 cows, and Sam was going to come over with his combine and pick our corn today,” Rick said. “The fresh snow will plug up the sieves on the combine, so it will have to wait.”

As milking progressed, Dory began to pull down small squares of dry hay for the cows to eat before heading out in the bitter cold to mix corn silage and haylage.

“We like to feed them a lot of dry hay to form a nice mat in their rumens before they get their silage and haylage,” Dory said.

“Rick’s family is originally from the area, and he’s the youngest of 11 children,”

Dory said. “They logged and milked cows throughout the 1920s, ‘30s, and ‘40s. Their cows lived in the woods, so they would take buckets out there and milk by hand. Then in the late 1940s, the state of Wisconsin wanted to eradicate

brucellosis and their herd was depopulated. After that, they moved to Illinois.”

Illinois was where Rick was born, and where he met Dory.

“I’m not from a farm, but I always wanted to be a farmer,” Dory said as she ran the silo, mixing corn silage and haylage in a wheelbarrow with a pitchfork to push into the mangers one load at a time. “I remember getting cards in school with careers for boys, such as farmers and doctors, and careers for girls like nurses and secretaries. I would always check off farmer even though that was supposed to be a boy’s job. I took over my older sister’s paper route and bought a horse, which I kept at a neighbor’s

farm. The neighbor said if I would help with milking that would cover my boarding, and that’s how I got into milking cows.”

The Kidders married in 1983 and moved to Shell Lake the following year. They raised three children: Randy, Kelly and Rachel. Rachel was home from college for the weekend and was babysitting Randy’s 11-month-old daughter, Raelynn, for the day.

Shortly before milking ended, Rachel bundled Raelynn up in a snowsuit and face mask to head to the barn to feed calves.

Rick said the same thing as he cuddled his granddaughter while managing a snuggly kitten at the same time. Rachel took the quarter bucket and fed milk to the cats.

“She loves me, but she especially loves Dory,” Rick said as Raelynn looked at him with bright eyes.

“At one time the cows were our pride and joy. Not anymore. Our kids and granddaughter are our pride and joy now.”

After nishing feeding calves and cows, Dory and Rachel headed to the horse barn with Raelynn in tow to feed grain to the horses. Dory has ve horses and a pony, and gave riding lessons for many years.

Ribbons and trophies decorate the walls of the horse barn, gleaming in the early morning light.

“I will still work with horses and their new or

prospective owners, giving them the tools to work together as a team,” Dory said. “Otherwise, the horse often gets sold or the owner is injured because they don’t realize just how much work goes into maintaining a good riding horse. I like to work through those problems with them so that they have a good relationship for their riding careers going forward.”

Dory also broke open the ice on their stock tank after feeding the horses their grain.

“I really don’t want to re up the stock tank heaters,” she said. “It adds another $200 to our electric bill.”

After nishing morning chores in the dairy and horse barns, the Kidders still had a full day ahead.

Dory needed to go to the neighbors’ and haul a few round bales home, while Randy was coming later in the day to pick up some staves from the silo that Rick tore down the week before.

“It is the best way to raise a family, hands down,” Dory said. … “We wouldn’t do anything differently.

We would have all benefited in this area had we side-dressed some nitrogen in the middle of June. We lost some to the rain and the hot weather. It was a pretty good year, a little challenging to put up hay. The soybeans ran in the 60s and the corn 190-210 around here.

There is probably about 5 percent of the corn still standing. The corn yield wasn’t that great because we had too much rain and a strong wind that lodged some of it. The corn stalks were rotten so we didn’t get the yield that we needed. The alfalfa was a normal crop year; we took four cuttings.

Our crops were a little below average in yields because of the drought this summer.

We had very little rain from the end of June to the end of August.

Things turned out well considering it was so dry. We had two crops of alfalfa and took the last one July 14.

We had some rain in September that gives us optimism for next spring. The hay greened up after the rains after being brown for 1.5 months.

We are working on our last 200 acres of corn harvest and are baling corn stalks right behind the combine. We’ve had some baling delays because of weather. Our corn yields have been phenomenal. None of our fields have averaged less than 200 bushels per acre, with some 250. This year has been both late and busy ever since we got that blizzard in mid-April, but a good year overall. Our wheat was a little disappointing, but the corn and beans were terrific.

There is a little corn out in the field yet, especially as you head towards Little Falls and Morrison County.

We are completely done with everything, including tillage. It was a well above average crop year for us. We never worried about rain, the moisture was perfectly timed. We finished with four crops of hay and good soybeans and corn crops.

We haven’t emptied our slurry yet, but we are still OK on that. We got our corn finished Friday (Nov. 18) and we got our beans done too. The beans averaged about 40 or so bushels an acre and the corn averaged about 150 bushels. The yields depended on the soil in each field.

We didn’t really keep track of the tonnage for silage, but we’ve got enough to last through at least April or May. We made four crops of hay. It was pretty average this year, it was just challenging to get made this year. But at least we weren’t flooded out like some people not too far from us.

2018 has been a tough year for sure.

We had substantial late season snow in April, followed by a dry summer and a wet and difficult fall. There is still quite a bit of corn and beans left to harvest in this area, though a lot of progress was made on the last couple weeks even with several small snow events. The general consensus is that everyone is just ready for this harvest season to be over with and start looking forward to hopefully a better year in 2019.

We just finished combining our corn.

Overall it’s been a 3” good year, and we’ve actually had plenty of moisture for the year, even though Since April 25 we had some pretty dry spells.

14.06” The corn yielded about 165-168 bushels per acre and our silage was about 25 to 26 ton, but we planted 20 inch rows at 40,000. We don’t use any additional fertilizer besides manure. We made three crops of hay. We could have taken a fourth, but I didn’t need it, so I didn’t take it.

We’ve still got some fall tillage we’d like to have gotten done, but overall it was a good year for forages. The wheat didn’t fair as well, though. The corn started to get tar spot fungus at the end, but we got it all in before it got knocked down. The yields overall were good. The corn was about 225 to 230 bushels an acre and the beans averaged about 67 bushels. The silage was about 31 tons. We made four crops of hay, and they were all pretty good. We had ample moisture, the challenge was just getting it made.

Overall the year was pretty average for crops, not super but not terrible. The corn yielded about 170 bushels for acres and the beans were about 50 bushels. Both of those were down about 10 bushels from last year. We did better than just north of us, I’ve heard the beans are about 35 bushels up there. The silage averaged about 25 tons.

We got four crops of hay. They weren’t terrible, but they weren’t great. Overall I’d say everything was just shy of being a great year, crop-wise.

Crop-wise this was actually a pretty good year. The harvest and all the mud were kind of a nightmare, but overall we got the rain and the heat when we needed it this summer.

For our beans being late getting in, they yielded about 53 bushels to the acre. We chopped pretty much all of our corn except what was knocked down, that came in at about 28 tons.

We got four crops of hay, the fourth crop got close to 45 days on us before we got it made. It was hard getting it made with the weather.

My agronomist has told us not to chisel plow this fall because it is so wet. I’ve got about two-thirds of my manure hauled, but I’m still waiting on the custom guy to haul the solids.

It’s cold here. We had 4-5 inches of snow on Friday (Nov. 16) night. The corn is done and so are the corn stalks but very little tillage is done. We could haul some manure if we get the opportunity. We were wet all year and it was challenging to get silage made. The hay yields were good but you wonder how much damage you did to the stand. We worry about mold in the corn because of how wet it was. We finished with four crops of hay and both the corn and soybeans were good.

It’s been dry and cold here. A lot of guys are hoping that the ground will thaw enough to do some tillage in high compaction areas. We’re trying to finish baling corn stalks and have had good weather for that.

This year has been challenging.

We started out wet and had some delayed spring planting. It became wet again in the summer and that continued well into fall.

The blessing of it all was that we got some great yields. We’re breathing a sigh of relief now that harvest has been safely completed.

1 pkg. (30 oz.) frozen shredded hash brown potatoes, thawed 2 cans (10 3/4 oz. each) condensed cream of potato soup, undiluted

2 cups sour cream 2 cups shredded cheese, divided 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, combine potatoes, soup, sour cream, 1 3/4 cups cheddar cheese and Parmesan cheese. Transfer to a greased 3 qt. baking dish. Sprinkle with remaining cheddar cheese. Bake, uncovered, 40-45 minutes or until bubbly and cheese is melted. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.

Mix the milk and honey together in a medium bowl until the honey is fully mixed in. (If the honey is very thick, it may help to heat it just a bit so it is a little more liquid.) Stir in the cream and the vanilla. (Stir it in gently; do not whip the cream.) Cover the mixture and put it in the refrigerator until it is really cold (especially if you had to heat the honey). Take the freezer bowl out of the freezer; put it in the ice cream maker. Stir the cream mixture to make sure it is blended well and pour it into the ice cream maker bowl. Turn the machine on and mix until thickened, about 30 minutes. Put the ice cream in an airtight container and freeze until you’re ready to serve. (2 or more hours in the freezer will give the ice cream a firmer consistency.)

Drain macaroni; add to cheese sauce; stir to coat.

Cheddar bits 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter (room temperature) 2 cups grated aged cheddar 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour

1 tsp. coarse salt 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper 1/4 tsp. sweet paprika 2 Tbsp. heavy cream

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Pulse butter, cheddar, flour, salt, cayenne pepper, and paprika in a food processor until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add heavy cream; pulse until just combined. Divide dough into 4 pieces; shape into rectangles. Wrap each in plastic. Refrigerate until firm, about 30 minutes. Working in batches, roll out each rectangle on a lightly floured surface to a 1/4-inch thickness, and cut into 1-inch squares. Transfer to a baking sheet leaving at least 1/4 inch between each. Refrigerate until chilled and firm, about 20 minutes. Bake until pale golden, 15 to 17 minutes.

Loaded baked potatoes 4 large baking potatoes 2 Tbsp. butter, melted 3 Tbsp. grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 tsp. dried rosemary, crushed 1/4 tsp. salt

1/8 tsp. pepper 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1/4 cup real bacon bits 1 green onion, chopped Sour cream

Scrub potatoes. With a sharp knife, slice potatoes thinly but not all the way through, leaving slices attached at the bottom. Place on a microwave-safe plate; drizzle with butter. Combine the Parmesan cheese, rosemary, salt and pepper; sprinkle over potatoes and between slices. Microwave, uncovered, on high for 12-18 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Top with cheddar cheese, bacon and onion. Microwave for 1-2 minutes longer or until cheese is melted.

Serve with sour cream. Yield: 4 servings.

Chocolate chip cheesecake 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs 1/3 cup white sugar 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/3 cup butter, melted 3 (8 oz.) packages cream cheese

1 (14 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk 3 eggs 2 tsp. vanilla extract 1 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 tsp. all purpose flour

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Mix graham cracker crumbs, sugar, butter and cocoa. Press onto bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch spring form pan.

Set crust aside. Beat cream cheese until smooth. Gradually add sweetened condensed milk; beat well. Add vanilla and eggs, and beat on medium speed until smooth. Toss 1/3 of the miniature chocolate chips with the 1 tsp. flour to coat (this keeps them from sinking to the bottom of the cake). Mix into cheese mixture. Pour into prepared crust. Sprinkle top with remaining chocolate chips.

Bake at 300 degrees for 1 hour. Turn off oven (do not open oven door) and leave the cake in the oven to cool in the oven for another hour. Remove from oven and cool completely. Refrigerate before removing sides of pan. Keep cake refrigerated until time to serve.

On Wednesday we sold 327 dairy cattle with 2 dispersals. Quality was much lower than last weeks auction, with fresh supremes last week topping from $1,500-1,900. This week many very good quality cows selling from $1,150-1,400. Lots of good cows $750-1,100. Better quality springing heifers $800-1,200. Plainer, lesser quality and lower producing cows a lot lower with the major drop in market cow prices taking the Áoor right off ‘em! We sold lots of cows and springing heifers below $700. Just a excellent buying opportunity for anybody out there with available cash at hand, but unfortunately the ones with cash mostly buying the better kind!!
