Silage pile management, feeding issues among topics of eld day

PRIMGHAR, Iowa – The I-29 Moo University hosted a dairy eld day Nov. 13 at Summit Dairy, an 800-cow farm owned and operated by John Westra and his wife, Rachell and their children, Stephanie, Maranda, Johnny, Andrea and Elizabeth,

near Primghar.

Dr. Hugo Ramirez, assistant professor in dairy nutrition and management at Iowa State University, was on hand to discuss the Westras’ feeding program. He also shared tips about piling and managing corn silage.

The Westra family previously dairy farmed in Tulare, California. They moved

to Iowa in 2012 and purchased their current dairy farm, which was a 400-cow operation at the time.

“Much of our family still lives in California,” Westra said.

“But we moved here for the

school and the church community and for the opportunity to expand our dairy operation.”

In 2014 the Westras built a new freestall barn that gave them room for an additional 400 cows.

The freestall facilities feature

twice-a-day milking from a three-times-a-day schedule.

“Our employees had trouble getting all the cows milked during their shifts,” Westra said. “Milk production took a slight dip after the switch, but we now have happier employees, better reproduction numbers and lower sanitation expenses. The change has worked out well.”

The Westras’ dairy farm came with several bunker silos.

“I don’t particularly like bunker silos,” Westra said.

“It’s hard to pack the silage next to their walls. Rainwater runs off their plastic covers and down the walls, especially on the back side. That can be a problem during a wet year like this one.”

Ramirez shared strategies to deal with bunkers.

“It is difcult to pack the silage next to the back wall of a bunker silo,” Ramirez said. “We have found that a good strategy is to remove the back wall of the bunker and make it into a semi drive over pile. We used to recommend single tires on the packing tractor, but we now recommend duals for safety reasons.”

A few years ago, Westra created a commodity shed by tearing out the wall between a pair of adjoining bunker silos and putting a roof over them.

“We needed more feed storage after our expansion,” Westra said. “I wondered how much feed we were losing to the wind and was told that it’s between 3% and 15%.

This meant that I was losing $8,000 per year just in canola meal. Building the commodity shed cost $220,000, but we’re condent it will pay for itself in the long run.”

Westra stores dry hay and a wide variety of feed ingredients in his commodity shed. He blends his TMRs inside the shed. This eliminates wind losses and enables him to exert better control over the ingredient mixture.

“Dairy cows crave consistency,” Westra said. “The commodity shed not only protects our feed, it allows us to make a very precise premix for our TMR. Milk production went up 4 pounds per head per day after we built the commodity shed.”

Molasses is included in Westra’s TMR along with salted whey from the AMPI plant in Sanborn.

“These wet ingredients help keep the nes suspended in the TMR,” Ramirez said. “Plus, the cows like the salt and the sweetness. It’s like eating salted caramel ice cream.”

The dry cows at Summit Dairy are given the utmost attention.

“I consider our dry cows to be the most important part of our dairy herd,” Westra said. “If a dairy is having trouble, the rst place you should look is in the dry cow pen.”

Ramirez explained a few tips for feeding dry cows.

“The dry cow ration needs to be blended more thoroughly than the lactating cow ration,” Ramirez said.

“The dry cows aren’t being milked, so they have nothing else to do but play with their feed and sort it. This can lead to the aggressive animals consuming more of the ne material and becoming too fat. Those animals can then develop such problems as fatty liver, ketosis and milk fever.”

“We push up the feed to the bunks once per hour and make sure our fresh and transition cows get plenty of long-stemmed hay,” Westra said. “We have had only a handful of displaced abomasums since we’ve been here.”

After converting the bunker silos into a commodity shed, Westra poured a sprawling slab of concrete for his silage pile.

“This is an ideal silage pile,” Ramirez said. “The concrete slab is well drained, and the pile has a 3-to-1 slope, which is both safe and easy to pack. The silage has been covered by a tough plastic lm that has an oxygen barrier built into it. Keeping out the oxygen is crucial if you want to avoid spoilage.”

Connie Kuber of Connor Agriscience addressed silage pile safety.

“People should stay at least three times the height of the pile away from the pile’s face,” Kuber said. “For example, if you have a pile that’s 15 feet high, you should remain at least 45 feet away from its face.”

Putting up quality silage and managing the silage pile can be a challenge. This is particularly so during a wet year.

“Last year, after the silage was packed, we spread two pallet loads of salt on top of the pile right before we covered it,” Westra said. “This year, I sprayed salted whey on half of the pile. The cows need the salt anyway, and I’m curious to see if the salt will reduce surface spoilage.”

The chopped corn that went into the silage pile at Summit Dairy came from three different neighborhood farms. As such, silage quality can vary throughout the pile.

“You should check the nutrient levels of your silage at least once a month and test its moisture content at least once per week,” Ramirez said.

“I bought a couple of air fryers for $38 apiece at Walmart,” Westra said. “I will gather a silage sample from across the pile in a 5-gallon bucket. Then, I will weigh out 100 grams from the bucket and dry it for 30 to

45 minutes in the air fryer. I check the moisture level of our silage every few days.”

Incolulants are also important to consider when managing a silage pile.

“An inoculant can save up to 2.5% of the dry matter that you put into the pile. An inoculant also extends the shelf life of the TMR from 24 hours to 96 to 120 hours.

due to increased starch digestibility. Spoilage is like a ameless candle that is slowly burning up your forage.”

Overall, the Westras are pleased with all the improvements they have made to their dairy.

“My family and I are happy to be here in Iowa where there is a plentiful feed supply and lots of space,” Westra said. “This dairy farm is God’s business. We are just its stewards.”

No farmer, no farm

NAMI provides suicide prevention training for rural communities

STEWARTVILLE, Minn. – The last few years in the dairy industry have been challenging and down-right burdensome for many, causing a lot of additional stress for producers. Because of this, mental health has been a topic more people in the dairy community are bringing forward.

“My belief is we need to be better neighbors,” Cynthie Christensen said. “In rural America, we have to turn toward mental illness like we do if someone had a heart attack or a Hiemlich situation or if someone’s in the ditch. We help each other.

With depression and stress, we tend to turn away from each other.”

Christensen is trying to change that by volunteering through the Minnesota division of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. The long-time farmer and president of the Houston County Farm Bureau is also a psychiatric nurse and a licensed therapist with her own teletherapy business for sessions in person, through video streaming or via phone. She presented “Harvesting Hope: Helping Our Neighbor,” which includes the QPR program to Land O’Lakes employees and dairy producers Nov. 6 in Stewartville.

QPR stands for question, persuade and refer. The national program is an evidencebased emergency mental health intervention to help reduce suicidal behaviors. It is intended to offer hope through positive action. It comes from the QPR Institute in Spokane, Washington. The goal of the in-

stitute is to have QPR be seen as the mental health equivalent of CPR, cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

“This whole program and the thought of suicide and helping someone stay alive who is having suicidal ideation is huge and it’s frightening,” said Hayley McHale, community health educator for NAMI Minnesota. “We want to teach with this program that no matter how small of a step you take, by offering someone hope you can essentially persuade them to stay alive by giving them hope to seek out options.”

Christensen gave examples to ask people such as: Are you doing OK? How is it going? Do you ever wish you could go to sleep and never wake up? Do you feel like you want to harm yourself? I’m worried about you, and I’m wondering if you are thinking about suicide?

“If you have the instinct something is wrong, just ask the question however you are comfortable,” Christensen said. “It’s just having the courage to ask the question. And, if you’re wrong, you’ve taught them that if they get in trouble, you’re a person they can talk to because you asked the question.”

Christensen said questions not to ask include: You’re not suicidal, are you? You wouldn’t do anything stupid, would you?

“We have to have the courage to ask when we rst get that rst instinct and not wait,” Christensen said. “We’re all very private and think it’s not our business, but we have to get over that.”

The next step in QPR is persuade. It is persuading someone to stay alive. Listen to

DAIRY CALENDAR Minnesota Commissioner of Agriculture Thom Peterson will be the keynote speaker at the annual state convention of Minnesota National Farmers Organization on Nov. 30. The convention will be held at Max’s Grille in Olivia starting at 9:30 a.m. The day-long meeting will feature a noon lunch with a variety of speakers and a national director election. The event will be opened by State President Joe Neaton of Watertown. Also speaking will be Paul Riniker, national vice president of National Farmers, from Greely, Iowa. He and President Paul Olson of Taylor, Wisconsin, will be running for re-election at the national convention Feb. 10-12, 2020 in Bloomington, Minnesota.

In response to high levels of both personal and nancial farm stress, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is offering four “Farm Couple Getaways” aimed at farmers wanting to take advantage of activities to improve farm family communication, work on farm or family goalsetting, farm transitioning, or who would just like a weekend away to discuss farm and family issues.

The rst “getaway” will be held Dec. 14-15 at EWALU Stone Center in Strawberry Point. The dates and locations for the other “getaways” are as follows: Friday and Saturday, Jan. 31-Feb. 1, 2020 at Hotel Winneshiek in Decorah, Iowa. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21-22, 2020 at Lake Shore Center at Okoboji in Milford. Thursday and Friday, March 19-20, 2020 at the Best Western Plus Hotel in Dubuque, Iowa.

The “getaways” run from 12:30 p.m. on the rst day to 3:15 pm on the second day of the “getaway.” There is no cost to attend as food, lodging and other expenses are being paid for by sponsorships. However, there is a $50 per couple deposit to hold each reservation, refundable on the second day of the getaway.

Past “Farm Couple Getaways” have proven to be benecial to farm couples. “They are a very productive and delightful time to discuss items of importance to help farms and families be successful”, says Larry Tranel, dairy specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach.

Each “getaway” will consist of ten farm couples and the extension facilitators. Registration will be on a rst come, rst serve basis, due two weeks prior to each session. What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am involved in both 4-H and in FFA. Why are you involved in these activities/organizations, and what is your favorite? Our family has a long history of being involved in 4-H and in FFA. My parents encouraged me to participate in both. I enjoy both of them. I enjoy 4-H more because of all the friends I have made while being in 4-H. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. My best experience is beating my cousin in dairy showmanship every year.

What is your favorite social media? I use Snapchat a lot.

What are your career aspirations? I would like to be a farmer like my parents.

What is something you have learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? If you want something done, you have to do it yourself. Hard work pays off. Things don’t always go as you planned, but don’t give up. Always be willing to volunteer. You get back way more than you give when you volunteer.

Tell us something about yourself that many people do not know. I had to take over greater responsibilities on our farm after my mom’s accident in December 2016. Mom was turning into our driveway with a tractor and a feeder wagon when a car tried to pass her. Mom was seriously injured and couldn’t do any work for six months.

Tell us some of your duties on the farm. I feed the cattle, clean the barn, do eldwork, perform machinery maintenance, help with combining and planting, along with many chores around the farm.

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? I would change the image most people have about farmers. I would do this by educating kids in schools, especially in bigger cities, about how farms are run and why certain things are done on a farm. I would also use more social media to help promote farming.
