Durovecs expand herd, house portion of cows outside

MEADOWLANDS, Minn. – Low cost farming has kept Bob and Patty Durovec in business on their dairy for the last 38 years.

“New Zealand has one of the lowest costs of production in the world,” Bob said. “We want to mimic their way of farming as much as possible.”

Bob and Patty Durovec milk 170 cows on their farm in St. Louis County near Meadowlands, Minn.

When a group of freshening heifers was going to put them over capacity in the 120-stall freestall barn last year, the Durovecs kept the expansion low cost by housing the overow cattle outside.

“We weren’t going to get much for selling them, so we decided to milk them,” Bob said. “But, we didn’t want to build another barn or add onto the one we had.

At the stage in our life, we didn’t want to invest that much money, but we still needed to generate an income.”

Housing cattle outside was not a new concept for the Durovecs.

“We were already doing it since land is cheap here. When animals reach 600 pounds, they don’t see a roof until they start milking,” Bob said. “The heifers were already used to it, so it was an easy transition for us.”

When they originally made the decision to house the excess cows outside, they were planning to have their crossbred cows – Holstein, Montbéliarde and Ayrshire cross – be the ones outside.

For the heifers, the Durovecs also provide a protein lick tub in the winter.

“It gives them a little extra since they don’t get any grain and the forages they have are not as high of quality as what the milking herd gets,” said Les Vergin, the Durovec’s herdsman.

To help the milking cows through the cold, snowy winter, the Durovecs use ve to six 26- by 9-foot portable windbreaks and three windbreaks for the heifers.

“Those are key,” Bob said. “Cold isn’t an issue. As long as you keep them out of the wind, they’ll do ne.”

But when a winter storm hits, the Durovecs keep the cows in knolls on the elds to provide extra protection from the wind.

The Durovecs also provide bedding to those cows by chopping old dry hay or straw into a windrow in the eld as needed, especially after a measurable snow.

“We’ve found the windrow works best, especially for keeping the cows clean,” Bob said. “The cows lay on it like they do in a freestall, which keeps the manure off the bedding.”

In the New Zealand style swing-17 parlor, the Durovecs use a winter iodine dip high in emollients.

“We apply it post milking and blot it dry before they go out when it reaches 20 degrees or colder,” Bob said. “We don’t have frost bitten teats.”

Despite braving the elements during the winter, the cows have faired well over the last year.

“They’ve done about as good as the cows in the freestall barn in the cold,” Bob said. “During the summer, they seem to do better. We aim for 65 pounds of milk per day in the tank and we get it. We’ve also maintained a somatic cell count of 150,000 for the last two years. We’re very happy with it.”

But the biggest challenge the Durovecs face with raising cows outside is the mud.

“I want to put together a limestone lot for the cows to go on in the spring and fall to avoid being in the mud,” Bob said. “We have limestone roadways cows take to the parlor and they hold up well year round.”

The farm has been in the Bob’s family since the early to mid 1940s when his father started to dairy farm.

Bob and Patty started milking cows 38 years ago in the stanchion barn.

“We actually remodeled that barn not long after into a tiestall barn and milked 44 cows for a while,” Patty said.

Once the kids moved off the farm, the Durovecs transitioned to the parlor and freestall barn.

“We would’ve been worn out otherwise,” Bob said.

To keep costs minimal, the Durovecs converted an old building into the freestall barn and added 100 feet onto it.

By 2001, Bob and Patty nished building their parlor and freestall barn.

“It took us four years to have it up and running because we built it all ourselves,” Bob said.

Since the beginning, the Durovecs have made a point to make money regardless of the expansions or remodels.

“Each year we’ve made money,” Bob said. “We do all of our own repairs, which our mechanic, Tim McCoy helps a lot with.”

That idea of making money is what drove the opportunity to expand and house the cows outside.

“John Takala manages his whole milking herd outside year round and has been very protable,” Bob said. “We learned a lot from him.”

Looking back, the Durovecs are happy with their decision.

“We only invested $5,000 by doing what we did instead of the couple hundred thousand we would’ve invested if we had added on with equipment and buildings,” Bob said. “It all comes down to protability because we farm to live.”

Roth a candidate for Faces of Farming program Platteville farmer one of eight ďƒžnalists

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – With a herd expansion on the horizon, the winds of change continue to blow at Banner Ridge Farms in Platteville, Wis. For Katie Roth, one of the farm’s partners, more changes on the farm means more to talk about and explain to others about modern dairy farming. Katie has been involved in the U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance’s Faces of Farming and Ranching program and is one of eight national ďƒžnalists vying for a chance to represent and speak for agriculture. “This is a wonderful opportunity to share my passion for agriculture and how food is grown in America,â€? Katie said. “When you enjoy something so much, Katie Roth it’s easy to speak from the heart.

I want to be a proactive voice, sharing my story about what really happens on modern dairy farms.�

Katie and T.J., her husband of less than one year, do know what happens on dairy farms. Katie grew up on a dairy near Darlington, Wis. T.J. did not grow up on a farm. He began working for John and LuAnn Shea, the senior partners in Banner Ridge Farms, in 2007, when he attended the nearby University of Wisconsin-Platteville, studying animal science.

As for John and LuAnn, they began on their present farm in 1974. John did not have a farm background, but his father purchased the place as an investment.

LuAnn and John employ their son, Steve, fulltime on the farm, while their daughter, Jill, works part-time. Two more sons, Mark and Jeff, are pursuing careers on their own.

Six years ago, John and LuAnn lost a son, David, to cancer at age 30. “T.J. stuck with us through all the ups and downs of that,� John said. “I don’t think I’d have made it without T.J. and the other [employees]. It’s just kind of a blur.�

The Sheas and Roths want to use the farm as a way to help others learn about dairying. “We want to increase our visibility with the public,� Katie said. “We want to give more farm tours and help consumers understand how their food is grown and raised.�

The faces of farming and ranching program meshes well with that goal. Katie became involved through her work with the Wisconsin Farm Bureau.

She chaired the organization’s young farmers and agriculturists efforts in Lafayette County. She attended the state group’s leadership institute and its women’s communications boot camp in Washington, D.C. Katie learned how to communicate better, work with members of the news media, use social media and how to be a voice and advocate for agriculture.

One main message Katie said she wants to get across is that farmers take good care of their livestock. “Dairy farmers are in business to make milk. But at the same time, they have to care for their animals,�

Another message Katie wants to share is that farmers are part of their communities. They want the best for themselves and their neighbors, as well.

Katie can use her family’s farm as an example when talking about modern farming practices.

The farm has grown from nearly 160 acres and 37 cows to 700 acres owned and rented and 265 milking cows. More cows are coming to the Grant County farm soon. LuAnn said they have plans to milk 200 more cows in 2017, for a total of 450. The new cows will stay in a 104- by 236-foot addition to one of the two freestall barns.

Counting family members, the limited-liability corporation employs 13. John oversees everything, works with the ďƒžnances, handles some of the ďƒželdwork and does some milking. LuAnn takes care of the payroll, cooks for the whole crew during big jobs like chopping and works in a support role as needed.

T.J.’s main emphasis is feed; that includes everything from harvesting, packing silage, covering bunker silos, preparing the total mixed ration and delivering TMR to the Holsteins.

Katie is the herdswoman. She also works as a program technician for the Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Lancaster, Wis. The cows are milked three times a day and carry a rolling herd average of 29,000 pounds of milk. The fat test is 4 percent, while the protein is at 3 and the somatic cell count averaged 70,000 last year.

Banner Ridge Farms uses a double-12 parallel parlor constructed in 2015. The system replaced a 1980s swing-10 parlor. Before then, John and LuAnn were milking in an old two-story barn equipped with stanchions. “And sometimes the cows would walk out of the barn with the stanchions around their necks,� LuAnn said.

In 1979, a tiestall facility replaced the stanchion barn. John and LuAnn built their ďƒžrst freestall barn 24 years later. They chose a spot up the hill from the original buildings, wanting better air movement, better drainage, and room to expand.

Within the face of farming contest, information about each candidate, including a video, was posted on Facebook. People were invited to vote for their favorite. The voting period ended Oct. 23, and the winners were announced Nov. 9.

To enter, Katie had to submit her own video. T.J. followed her around, documenting some of the occurrences on the farm. Along with making a video, Katie and the other contestants were interviewed via telephone by four members of the previous faces of farming individuals.

Katie said she was asked questions about hot-button topics. Questions included topics such as buying organic, pesticide side effects and why cows are kept inside.

If she is chosen to represent agriculture, Katie will spend 25 days traveling during her one-year term.

She will attend trade shows and conferences answering questions about agriculture. She will also use social media to get her messages across.

T.J., John and LuAnn said they all support Katie in her quest to become a face of farming. It’s a big commitment of time and money, but it’s worth it, Katie said “Farming is something I love and enjoy,� Katie said. “God really has a purpose for me to be an advocate for agriculture. Through my experience with the farm bureau and just being on the farm, I have the skill set and capabilities, and I want to do this. I really owe it to an industry that’s given me so much.�

Milking cows, making touchdowns Tietz leads St. Croix Lutheran to Minnesota high school football tournament

MENOMONIE, Wis. – Isaac Tietz drives an hour to school every morning from his family’s 70-cow dairy near Menomonie, Wis., to St. Croix Lutheran High School in West St. Paul, Minn.

“It’s a long drive [to school] but I enjoy going to school so it’s worth it,” said Tietz, who is a senior at Isaac Tietz St. Croix Lutheran.

The sixth child of seven total to attend St. Croix Lutheran, Tietz has been attending the parochial school from the beginning.

Not only does he love the learning environment, he’s also enjoying a successful season as the St. Croix

Lutheran Crusaders’ starting quarterback.

The Crusaders, a AAA team coached by Carl Lemke and Ryan Hulse, have been annihilating their opponents – other teams in the Twin Cities metropolitan area that are often much larger schools – all season and are undefeated heading into the Minnesota state football quarternals this weekend.

“I’ve been playing football since fourth grade, where I played ag football for four years. My freshman year was my rst year playing tackle football, and I was a starter on varsity for the rst time last year,” Tietz said.

It doesn’t take much to realize that, just by looking at how high the scores are – such as their 62-43 win over Highland Park – the Crusaders are a force to be reckoned with while Tietz is at the helm.

The team has been at the top of the 3A division throughout Minnesota all season, and have scored no less than 30

Tietz, while aware of his contributions to the team’s runaway success, is quick to give credit to his teammates, acknowledging them for carrying the Crusaders this far into the playoffs.

“Our offense has basically been unstoppable, and it kind of sets the tone for the rest of the game,” Tietz said. “We’ve been at the top of our division and we want to stay at No. 1

as long as we can.”

In the Crusaders’ recent game against Minneapolis Patrick Henry on Nov. 4, Tietz led his team to a 34-7 victory by throwing two touchdown passes and running into the end zone for two more touchdowns.

Another game that stands out in Tietz’s mind is the Crusaders’ homecoming game on Sept. 30 against Fridley, who was ranked in the top ve 4A teams in Minnesota and beat

the Crusaders in a crushing loss last fall.

Tietz, who ran for ve touchdowns that night, and his teammates walloped their opponents 42-7.

“Winning homecoming stands out in my mind out of all the games we played this season,” Tietz said. “Our game against Fridley was picked as the Minnesota Game of the Week by WCCO.” Tietz, in addition to being an undisputed football star, Turn to TIETZ | Page 7

Unless he is recruited by a four-year university to play college football after graduation, Tietz is leaning toward a two-year degree at the moment.

While he isn’t sure exactly what he wants to do, a love for farming has taken root in his heart.

“One of my older brothers is taking over the farm, but I’d still like to work with cows someday by having some beef cattle,” Tietz said.

The Crusaders face off against Belle Plaine on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 3 p.m. Tietz, while optimistic about the outcome, is mindful that everything happens for a reason.

“We’re having a very successful season,” Tietz said. “We’re just taking it one game at a time until we get to the championship, if God allows.”

also carves out as much time as he can to help his parents, Greg and Amy, on the family farm.

“It’s a lot of work, but I wouldn’t be able to play football without my family,” Tietz said. “My mom milks during the week so I can go to school and practice.”

With nearly 20 heifers due to freshen over the next couple months, Tietz’s mind has been on more than just football these days. Fortunately, his coaches and teammates are understanding of things at home.

“Coach Lemke grew up on a dairy farm as well, and he coached all my uncles when they played football here, too,” Tietz said. “Things are hectic on the farm but we’re a family, and we all make it work.”

Tietz can be found milking cows on weekends, and pitching in at night as much as he can after coming home from practice most evenings around 7 p.m.

The family’s cows are milked at 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. to accommodate football season so Greg and Amy can make it to their son’s games.

“Milking times will have to change so everyone can make it to our state games,” Tietz said.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Standing in the spotlight, looking into a sea of thousands of young agricultural enthusiasts, Sabrina Portner heard her name over the sound system and a grin stretched across her face.

On Oct. 21 at the 89th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind., Portner was honored as the 2016 Dairy Production-Entrepreneurship National Agricultural Proď&#x192;&#x17E;ciency Award recipient. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All I can remember is standSabrina Portner ing in the middle of the stage and hearing my whole chapter scream as the announcer says, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Sabrina,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

Portner said.

A sophomore at Iowa State University studying animal science and international agriculture, Portnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s success in FFA stems from her earlier years on her familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s farm near Sleepy Eye, Minn., where they milk 250 Brown Swiss.

At the age of 7, Portner started her own dairy herd with a Brown Swiss heifer calf, gifted by her father, Tom, as a 4-H project. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The cow had heifers and I was given other heifers, too,â&#x20AC;? Portner said.

Years later, as a sophomore in high school, Portner joined the local FFA chapter to fuel her interest in agriculture and dairy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had many good friends in FFA,â&#x20AC;?

Portner said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I decided to give it a go and am happy they all convinced me to join.â&#x20AC;?

Throughout the years, Portner participated in the dairy evaluation career development event (CDE) and other chapter activities, while also holding a variety of leadership roles. Amongst her different undertakings, Portner always found time

for her dairy proď&#x192;&#x17E;ciency or supervised agricultural experience (SAE), where she evaluated her herd, which now includes 17 milking cows and 10 heifers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a good way to look at your business and all the data to share with others,â&#x20AC;? Portner said.

Since 2012, Portner has assessed her herd and recorded all data, including rolling herd average, milk quality values and other key factors that contribute to a farmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s success as part of her SAE. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Basically, my cows are all in Dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s herd,â&#x20AC;? Portner said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thankfully, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not too complicated. I pull my herd records from my dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s records.â&#x20AC;?

Upon review, she has been able to reconsider management practices to aid in the development of her herd. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s deď&#x192;&#x17E;nitely been my mentor and encouraged me to be involved on the farm, inspiring me and giving me the drive to learn more and improve my dairy herd,â&#x20AC;? Portner said.

One way Portner took the data and re-evaluated farm practices was by observing milk quality tests and reviewing options to eliminate high somatic cell counts values. After seeing the initial tests, Portner conducted further research at Iowa State University.

Within her herd, Portner then collected milk samples of high somatic cell count cows, tested the samples and analyzed the cultures. Upon review, Portner determined a majority of mastitis cases were environmental. â&#x20AC;&#x153;From that, I was able to come up with a treatment and prevention plan, such as restructuring our milking procedure,â&#x20AC;? Portner said.

Additionally, Portner conducted an antibiotic sensitivity test to determine which treatment is the most effective for her herd. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We found E. coli in some tests, so now we only treat with an antibiotic that is designed to also treat E. coli,â&#x20AC;? Portner said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This way, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not testing all cows and using different treatments.

Keeping their eye on the prize Kummet, Lux, Smieja, Donnay, Fernholz, Gertken in state competitions

All season long, high school athletes have kept their eyes on the prize – competing in the state tournament in their respective sport.

For six dairy youth in Minnesota, that goal has been reached. Matt Kummet of Pierz, Minn., Greg Lux of Eden Valley, Minn., Caleb Smieja of Royalton, Minn., Anna Donnay of Kimball, Minn., Brynn Fernholz of Hoffman, Minn., and Billy Gertken of Rice, Minn., are all competing in the state tournament this fall in football and cross country.

Keeping his tradition Like the last few years, Matt Kummet kept to his pre-game tradition this season of bedding heifer pens before playing his football games.

“Dad looked at me and said, ‘We can’t change your routine now,’” Kummet said. “So, we kept doing it. It works.”

of nine wins and one loss. Kummet is the son of Tom and Julie Kummet who milk 38 cows near Pierz, Minn.

“We’ve gone in undefeated before, but we had some key players get injured this season,” Kummet said. “But, we got through it and I felt the season went well.”

Kummet is a senior starting as an offensive tight end and a defensive end, and will be playing Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin (7-2) at 1 p.m on Nov. 11 at Brainerd High School.

“We’re going to play it like it’s our last game,” Kummet said.

Despite being at the state tournament before, Kummet is glad he is able to do it again as a senior.

“That makes it extra special,” he said. “Like I do on the farm, I’m going to work hard with my team and hopefully come out with a win.”

Ending his career on a high note With a record of 9-1 after beating Osakis last week in the section 5AA championship game, Greg Lux and his teammates on the Eden Valley-Watkins High School football team are heading to the state tournament.

“This is the rst time I am going to state,” Lux said. “It hasn’t hit me yet.”

Although they are coming off a win from the section champions, Lux said they are putting the game behind them to focus on the next one.

“We can’t get too high on a win,”

Lux said. “We have to take it game by game.”

That focus and determination stems from Lux’s responsibilities on his family’s 110-cow dairy run by his parents, Mike and Bridget, near Eden Valley, Minn.

Lux, who is the senior starting wide receiver and safety Greg Lux for the team, helps with eldwork, milking, feeding and calf chores on the weekends.

“There are times you’d rather be doing something else, but we buck up and push through to do it, both on the farm and on the eld,” Lux said. “We have to do that to do well at the state tournament.”

The rst game of the state tournament is at 7 p.m. on Nov. 11 against Royalton High School at Brainerd High School. Lux is soaking up every moment during his rst and last state tournament.

“This has made my season extra special,” Lux said. “The hard work we put into it is all worthwhile.”

Achieving his goal All season long, Caleb Smieja and his teammates on the Royalton High School football team have been hoping to make it to the state tournament for the rst time in eight years.

“We’ve been talking about how we would do it this year,” Smieja said. “We

wanted to reach that goal for sure.”

And reach it they did. Smieja, the senior who plays center and defensive tackle on the team, will be playing in the rst game of the state tournament against Eden Valley-Watkins at 7 p.m. on Nov. 11 at Brainerd High School.

Smieja is the son of Greg and Mary Smieja who milk 40 cows near Royalton, Minn.

Getting to this point was not a cakewalk.

“Like we do on the farm, even when we’re sick or something isn’t right, we had to Caleb Smieja push through and get in the right mindset to do this,” Smieja said. “I had to push through not only for me, but for my team, too.”

After reaching their goal, Smieja and his teammates are keeping that mindset going into the state tournament.

“There is a reason we are here,” Smieja said. “This is just surreal.”

Third time is the charm For the third and nal time, Anna Donnay competed at the state crosscountry meet on Nov. 5 at St. Olaf College in Northeld, Minn.

“It’s pretty amazing that I’ve been able to do this again,” Donnay said.

“It really hadn’t hit me that it was my last race,” Donnay said. “I just prayed to God to help me like I did each race and know that whatever happens, happens.”

Her success on the track the last three years stems from what she learned on her family’s 40-cow dairy run by her Anna Donnay parents John and Chris Donnay, near Kimball, Minn.

“I’ve learned that all the hard work I put into things pays off,” Donnay said. “It really gave me the motivation to go out and do it.”

With her last race complete, Donnay is looking back on her career with fond memories.

“I put in everything that I wanted out of it,” Donnay said. “I put everything out there to leave my last impression and made it a good one.”

Just getting started As an eighth grader, Brynn Fernholz’s crosscountry career with West Central Area High School is off to a great start with her second visit to the state tournament.

“Every year, my team and I try hard, and so far we’ve done really well,” Fernholz said.

Fernholz nished her cross-country season placing 118th out of 175 at the state meet on Nov. 5 at St. Olaf College in Northeld, Minn.

“It wasn’t my best time, but it was still fun to do it,” Fernholz said.

When she is not busy running, Fernholz stays busy helping her parents, Mark and Michele, bed calf hutches and Brynn Fernholz bottle-feed calves on their nearly 500-cow dairy farm near Hoffman, Minn.

And for Fernholz, the work ethic she gained on the farm has bled into her cross-country success.

“That’s been the biggest for me with crosscountry being an endurance race,” Fernholz said.

“On the farm, I can’t quit bedding hutches half way through or it won’t get done, just like I can’t run half a race.”

With her second state meet nished and four more years on the horizon, Fernholz will remember this state meet for years to come.

“It was so exciting even the second time,” Fernholz said. “This year we actually went as a team.

It was exciting for our school since we don’t have many state teams. It will be one that I will always remember.”

Taking it one game at a time Since he started playing football six years ago, Billy Gertken has been dreaming of one day making it to the state tournament.

“That’s always been the ultimate goal,” Gertken said.

This year, that dream came true as Gertken and his teammates from the Royalton High School football team are making the trip to the state tournament where they will play against Eden ValleyWatkins on Nov. 11 at Brainerd High School.

“It feels great to make it here,” Gertken said. “It’s hard to explain.”

Gertken starts as the defensive back on the team, and Billy Gertken he credits the feeding, watering and milking he does on his parents’, Bill and Gabriel Gertken’s, 42-cow dairy near Rice, Minn.

“It denitely helped with the physical aspect of my game,” Gertken said. “I don’t quit when I get tired.”

With their game against Eden Valley-Watkins coming up, Gertken is excited to be there but isn’t getting ahead of himself.

“It is very special for me because it’s my last year,” Gertken said. “But we are taking it one play at a time and one game at a time.”

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am a member of FFA and compete on the dairy judging team. I was in 4-H when I was younger, as well.

Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? My favorite is being a part of FFA. I went with my cousin to my rst meeting when I was in seventh grade and they were electing their middle school ofcer team. As I listened to the speeches, I loved the environment. FFA opened me up to new opportunities. I ran for the middle school FFA president position the next year, and while I didn’t get it, my advisor saw potential for me and encouraged me to be treasurer. I had dyslexia, so being treasurer was something I was fearful of because I was bad with money, math and numbers. My advisor helped me to count money and do the shopping for our FFA chapter.

In high school, I went to my rst conference, which really lit my re in the organization. I knew I wanted to be president the second I had voted for it in seventh grade. When I ran for it last year, I treated it as if it was a job interview and focused on bringing our FFA chapter into the community. My goal is to be very vocal for everyone’s ideas so that no one is left unheard.

Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. My best experience has been with Ag Day. We go to the middle school to teach about agricultural projects such as butter making and machinery. I love the re you can see in the students’ eyes when they learn something new. It inspires me to be a better president for our chapter and advocate for agriculture. We also teach students why agriculture and FFA is important to our community.

What’s your favorite social media? I would say Instagram or Facebook. Instagram is more geared towards teenagers, but Facebook is something everyone is on. It allows me to connect with family and friends who aren’t always nearby.

Get to know Daisy Isensee, Sparta, Wis.

What are your career aspirations? I would like to be enrolled at University of Wisconsin-River Falls to study agriculture education and one day be a teacher. I would also like to spend my summers volunteering for the Peace Corps.

What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? I’ve learned no matter how small a person might be, their voice matters. No matter what your dream is, you have to go for it. I want to run for state ofce, and I look at it as a challenge for our school and myself.

Who do you look up to? Joelle Liddane. She was a state ofcer from my section. She also came from a small school. At my chapter’s banquet, she gave a speech on agriculture that was so moving. The way she carried herself while in ofce makes me aspire to be her mirror image.

Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. When I was in third grade, my teacher told us to share what we wanted to be when we grew up. As we went around class, I heard people saying things like reghter and vet. When it got to me, I said I wanted to be a spy. I was so quiet though, no one could hear me and the teacher asked me to repeat what I had said. I got nervous because my answer was different, so I ended up changing my answer. If there is any lesson, it’s to be proud of who you are and what you come from; don’t change who you are.

Tell us some of your duties on the farm. When I was younger, I would go out in the mornings with my mom. I would let cows out, sweep the mangers, sweep and scrap the stalls and sometimes do calf chores. I did morning chores on the weekends and assisted with milking for one month when my grandpa needed help.

When I turned 15, I got an off-farm job so I don’t get to help out as much anymore, but do so when needed.

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? I would change air pollution. I would change this by reducing the number of gas cars driving on the road, whether that would mean encouraging electric car usage or increasing the amount of available public transit. I would also like to see houses powered by wind and sun.

Minnesota FFA chapter earns Gold Rank at National FFA Dairy Cattle Evaluation and Management Career Development Event

Winners of the National FFA Dairy Cattle Evaluation and Management (CDE) were announced Oct. 21.

The National FFA Dairy Cattle Evaluation CDE is a competitive event that tests the student’s ability to select and manage quality dairy cattle. Event components include six classes of dairy cattle, herd record evaluation and a dairy management team activity. Each team competed at local and state levels to earn the privilege of representing their home state at the National FFA Convention and Expo.

Economic study shows billions of dollars in losses to U.S. dairy industry under abusive EU geographical Indications Policies Surrendering to a European Union (EU) seizure of common food names would cost the U.S. dairy industry billions of dollars, slash domestic cheese consumption and increase prices for consumers, according to an analysis released today by Informa Economics IEG (a summary of the report can be found here).

The European farm policy agenda, which is focused on using geographical indications (GIs) to unfairly grant European food producers a huge commercial advantage, would force farmers and food producers outside of Europe to rebrand familiar foods with unfamiliar names. The resulting confusion in the U.S. domestic marketplace could shutter family farms, eliminate thousands of rural jobs and hurt the overall U.S. economy, the analysis said. The European Union advocates extending GI protections beyond a small number of specialty foods to cover many food names that have little to no geographic identity and have long been commonly used by food producers around the world.

At today’s prices, the decline in U.S. cheese consumption due to the loss of common food names could amount to $2.3 billion in lost sales in three years, and $5.2 billion in 10 years. It could push dairy farm balance sheets below the breakeven point for six out of 10 future years, costing farmers a cumulative $59 billion in revenue and forcing several thousand family dairy farms out of business, the analysis added.

The 60-page analysis was commissioned by the Consortium for Common Food Names (CCFN), an international alliance of companies and organizations dedicated to preserving the right to use common food terms. It was conducted by Informa Economics IEG and unveiled jointly by CCFN and the three major U.S. dairy trade associations: the National Milk Producers Federation, the U.S. Dairy Export Council and the International Dairy Foods Association.

Released along with the analysis were statements from members of Congress and CCFN allies.

“The statements show the common food names issue is incredibly important to both Congress and the executive branch,” CCFN Executive Director Jaime Castaneda said. “We appreciate the continuing efforts of the vast majority of members of Congress as well as Ambassador Michael Froman and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to combat the illegitimate appropriation of common food names.”

“Europe’s continued expansion of geographical indications in ways that protect terms long considered generic upends the entire concept of GIs,” said Tom Suber, president of USDEC, which represents the interests of dairy producers and processors in global trade and is the founding organization of CCFN. “Instead of protecting the names of a few specialty foods linked to specic areas, the EU uses GIs to eliminate competition for its producers.”

“The damage Europe’s GI agenda could do to the U.S. dairy industry is severe,” added Jim Mulhern, president and CEO of NMPF, which represents dairy producers and cooperatives. “By 2025, our dairy farmers would lose up to 15 percent of their income and the U.S. dairy herd would shrink by up to 9 percent, or 850,000 cows. Thousands of dairy farmers would be forced out of business.”

“Under Europe’s GI policies, U.S. manufacturers would face a choice of abandoning markets for cheeses like feta and parmesan or selling them under names like ‘crumbly white cheese’ or ‘hard grated cheese,’” said Connie Tipton, president and CEO of IDFA, which represents dairy processors domestically and inTurn to UDDER STUFF | Page 16

According to the study, consumers will choose imported cheeses with names they recognize over domestic products with names they don’t recognize. As a result, plummeting demand for domestic cheese would put numerous U.S. cheese manufacturers—particularly specialty cheese manufacturers—out of business.

This harm would not be limited to just the dairy sector. As the impacts on dairy ripple through industries like transportation and veterinary services, the study said, the U.S. economy could lose up to 175,000 jobs. Also, consumers would face higher prices, fewer choices and confusion in the supermarket as familiar cheese names are replaced by unfamiliar ones.

“To avoid such severe consequences,” said Castaneda, “the United States must aggressively oppose the carving up of markets and refuse to bestow monopolies on a few privileged European suppliers. The use of common names by the U.S. dairy industry—and indeed all other sectors relying on typical food terms—should be aggressively preserved, both for domestic and international use.”

Help your dairy calves avoid the winter slump Krystal Regan knows a lot about caring for calves during Midwest winters.

Her advice to dairy farmers in Iowa and Minnesota: Don’t wait until the cold hits.

“Calf raisers need to take proactive steps to help minimize cold weather stress in calves,” says Regan, a Purina Animal Nutrition calf and heifer specialist. “As temperatures drop, calves need the right environment to reduce heat loss. They also need a nutritional program that has the additional energy they require.”

For calves younger than 21 days, cold stress can begin when temperatures dip below 60 degrees F. Calves older than 21 days of age can start to experience cold stress below 40 degrees F. In Regan’s experience managing a calf and heifer program in Iowa, Nov. 1 is a good benchmark to start the transition to a cold-weather milk replacer.

When making the transition, producers have two options.

• Introduce to new calves only: Start feeding seasonal milk replacer to new or incoming calves, and do not switch all the calves to the seasonal formula.

• Introduce to all calves gradually: Begin adding the seasonal milk replacer, mixing it with the regular milk replacer until all calves receive 100 percent seasonal milk replacer. Start by adding 20-25 percent of the seasonal milk replacer per day over a period of four to ve days.

“Avoid switching milk replacers abruptly. A consistent diet supports rumen health and development for calves,” Regan said.

consistent diet. It becomes critical when switching between seasonal products.

“The fat and protein content of seasonal formulas have been optimized to meet the calves’ needs during cold weather. This means seasonal milk replacers can have different densities,” Regan says. Producers using automated feeders should be sure to calibrate them when switching to a new milk replacer, she says.

Consider these practices when managing calves in cold weather: • Colostrum. Calves are born with 4 percent body fat, making the fat in colostrum an essential source of energy for the newborn.

• Bedding. Nesting in a deep, clean layer of dry straw will help calves keep warm. A 6-inch bedding pack is ideal for calves.

• Calf jackets. If the temperature is below 60 degrees F, consider putting calf jackets on newborn calves. For calves 21 days or older, think about using calf jackets when temperatures dip below 40 degrees F. • Warm, fresh, free-choice water. Water consumption helps improve starter intake and supports rumen development. A well-developed, functioning rumen generates heat, which helps keep calves warm. Offering warm water to calves also conserves energy because they don’t have to use energy to warm the water up to their core body temperature.

• Consistent feeding intervals. Feed calves a milk diet at regular intervals 2 or 3 times daily. If calves have longer than 12-hour intervals between feedings, they might be exposed to the coldest time of the day with empty bellies.

• Seasonal starters. Consider feeding a seasonal calf starter, which provides the higher energy levels a calf needs in winter.

• Minimize stress. It might seem obvious, but minimizing stress during a cold weather period will help calves conserve energy. Minimizing stress can be as simple as closing a calf barn door or reducing handling time.

“Maintaining optimal calf growth during the cold winter months can be a challenge,” says Regan. “With a seasonal feeding program, calves can get the nutrients they need to support their immune systems and keep growing toward their full potential.”

WCMA supports the next generation of cheesemaking with ve scholarship awards The Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association (WCMA) is pleased open the application window for 2017 scholarship opportunities. WCMA will award ve scholarships worth a total of $15,000 to students pursuing careers in the dairy industry.

“Cheesemakers know that a well-educated workforce will help our industry grow, and that’s why, time and again, they’ve invested in students with scholarship awards,” said John Umhoefer, WCMA Executive Director. “All told, our association has donated more than $1 million to support students and industry educational programs.”

Next year, two students will be awarded the WCMA Myron P. “Mike” Dean Cheese Industry Student Scholarship, worth $3,000. Any employee or child of an employee at a WCMA member manufacturing or processor/marketer company may apply. The WCMA Cheese Industry Supplier Student Scholarships, also worth $3,000 each, will be awarded to three students. Any employee or child of an employee at a WCMA member supplier company may apply.

Preference for scholarship awards will be given to candidates will be pursuing degrees and careers connected to the food and dairy supply industry. Wellqualied candidates will be currently attending a college, university, or technical school in the United States, or registered to attend a qualifying school.

Applicants must supply transcripts, a letter of recommendation, and a completed application form. Youth grain handling safety resources more important than ever The recent death of a 16-year-old South Dakota boy in a grain bin incident is a grim reminder of the hazards of grain handling.

Salzwedel shared information about youth agricultural work guidelines, as well as the curriculum she developed with the Grain Handling Safety Coalition, during a general session of the National Association of Supervisors of Agricultural Education, held in conjunction with the FFA Convention.

“The work guidelines can be used in supervised agricultural experiences or by anyone supervising young workers to determine if a youth is able to perform a job safely,” Salzwedel said. “When working with grain, adding the curriculum enhances youth safety. We want to educate youth about owing grain hazards, but we also want the adults supervising the youth to make sure the young people are doing age appropriate work.”

Salzwedel and Education Outreach Specialist Tammy Ellis staffed the National Farm Medicine Center exhibit at the convention, where they engaged more than 2,700 students and FFA advisers, discussing safety resources and strategies that prevent agricultural injuries and fatalities.

Herdsperson Conference, is a repeating Conference held in three Wisconsin regions from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Tue., Dec. 6 in Chilton, Wed., Dec. 7 in Eau Claire, and Thu., Dec. 8 in Fennimore. The Herdsperson Conference is designed by a farmer-led committee to equip herd managers and other dairy professionals with the skills and management strategies to operate a successful dairy business in the areas of dry cow facilities, feed and nutrition, reproduction and transition cow and herd health. This event is a collaborative effort between Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, the Northeast Iowa Dairy Foundation, and Northeast Iowa Community College. Dairy producers, students and industry members are encouraged to attend. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Dairy Field Specialist, Jenn Bentley, will provide the latest research in managing calves utilizing grouphousing systems. This will be followed by Courtney Halbach, Associate Outreach Specialist with the University of Wisconsin Dairyland Initiative, discussing the practical considerations in building design and management for group-housed calves using automatic calf feeders. Following lunch, Courtney will introduce ventilation measurement and troubleshooting tools with a demonstration in the Dairy Center’s calf barn. The day will conclude with a tour of an automatic calf feeding barn at the Kevin and Gayleen Moeller’s farm near Ridgeway. The Moeller’s farm is currently housing six groups of calves in a cross-ventilated facility; utilizing automatic calf feeders and feeding pasteurized milk. University of Minnesota Extension will be hosting a second series of Transitioning to Organic Workshops, Dec. 5-7, in Lamberton, St. Cloud, and Rochester, Minn.

These free, one-day workshops are for both producers who are seeking more information about organic transitioning and certication, and farmers currently going through the process of transitioning to organic production. These workshops will be primarily directed to eld crop producers, but all are welcome.
