Beating the odds Opitz establishes Ayrshire dairy on lakeshore property

MAPLE LAKE, Minn.

– Being young, a woman and having no farming background is not the typical person to start a dairy farm.

“People either told me not to do it, or that they hoped it worked out for me because it was going to be really hard,” Elinor Opitz said. “Some even told me that women couldn’t do it.”

Despite the odds, Opitz did it anyway. Opitz milks 40 cows on her dairy, New-Vue Ayrshires, near Maple Lake, Minn.

“I knew it wasn’t going to be a cake walk, but I was excited about it,” Opitz said.

Opitz’s herd consists mainly of Ayrshires with a few Milking Shorthorn, which belong to a 4-Her, and crossbreds.

“I worked with Ayrshires through my aunt and uncle,” Opitz said. “They’re hardy cows.”

Opitz also saw an opportunity to make money on more than just their milk.

“I saw revenue opportunities in selling registered heifers,” Opitz said. “I also have two or three bulls that some A.I. studs are interested in.”

Opitz purchased her own farm in 2013 using a regular home loan.

“This place had been out of dairy commission for 10 years,” Opitz said. “There was a lot of work to be done with the buildings. All of our money went into that.”

After the rst year, Opitz moved her heifers and dry cows to the farm until she could purchase more cows and bring her 15 cows home.

Last year, Opitz received a seven-year operating loan and a Livestock Investment Grant, which paid for all the parlor equipment and cows.

Construction on the parlor started in March 2015 along with remodeling a building into a freestall barn with ex stalls.

During that time, Opitz bought 25 more Ayrshire cows and set up a verbal agreement

with a cooperative to ship her milk.

But before starting to milk her herd in July 2015, Opitz was told the cooperative was full and could no longer take her milk. Finally, she found a spot at Associated Milk Producers Incorporated.

But the challenges did not stop there.

Once the cows settled in, the ex stalls broke six to eight months later and there was no way to replace them.

reached out to Kent Solberg, through the Minnesota Dairy Protability Program and visited numerous grazing farms to learn what I could.”

Having $20,000 gone from the stalls, Opitz felt the sting of the low milk prices.

“It was tough making payments on my loan,” she said. “Prices haven’t bounced back yet, but thankfully, the base price got above $16.”

With the freestall barn sitting empty, Opitz is trying a bedded pack in the pasture for out-wintering the cows.

If the bedded pack works, Opitz plans to make the freestall barn into a bedded pack with access to pasture.

“It’s a trial run,” Opitz said. “It may be expensive, but it will be cheaper than installing manure storage.”

Looking ahead, Opitz plans to pursue the Minnesota Agriculture Water Quality Certication Program and one day, do something that would work directly with the consumer.

“Once I get more of my loan paid off, that’s the next step,” Opitz said.

Her farm includes 21 acres along with 15 acres she rents. Cows are milked twice a day in a double-6 herringbone parlor and are kept on pasture all day.

Two-thirds of the pasture is the original grasses, and the other third Opitz seeded orchard grass and red clover.

“I seeded from scratch,” Opitz said.

Currently, Opitz rotates pastures every three days.

“I’m still getting used to this. I’ve never done it before,” Opitz said. “I’ve a long ways to go. I’m hoping to eventually rotate every 12 hours.”

Although the cows are on pasture all day, Opitz has a small cement pad holding two days worth of manure.

With no tractors or manure spreader and limited land, Opitz trades the manure with her neighbor for straw, cob corn and heifer quality hay.

“It’s a good deal since I have no manure storage here,” Opitz said.

The daily ration per cow includes 14 pounds of cob corn along with 3.5 pounds of protein/mineral mixture and dry hay in a double-sided feed lane just outside the parlor with 72 headlocks.

“I don’t have a TMR,” Opitz said.

“I don’t have to push up feed because they can reach it from both sides, and I can lock the headlocks to feed grain individually, getting the benets I would in a tiestall barn.”

Since she works part time as a substitute cook for the Catholic Charities Meals on Wheels and her husband is an accountant, Opitz does seasonal breeding with cows starting to calve in May. “That’s when I can get the most help,” Opitz said. “It was a no-brainer for me.”

However, she does not seasonal

breed her entire herd.

“I never fully dry everyone up,” Opitz said. “I do just enough to decrease labor.”

Calves are kept in hutches, consisting of cattle panels covered with a tarp, until they are 3 days old, and are moved to a group hutch with ve other calves where they are fed milk from the cows twice a day in a Milkbar feeder – a bucket with six nipples on it.

“I love what I did with the calves,” Opitz said. “The feeder has reduced cross sucking and my calves are growing like weeds.”

Since the farm is within 1,000 feet of a lake, Opitz works closely with the county feedlot ofcer.

“They’ve been very realistic in their expectations and have helped me nd a better alternatives for changes I had to make, like nding a well-drained location to place my hay feeder,” Opitz said.

“They’ve been nice partners to have with the water being so close.”

Although she did not grow up on a farm, Opitz’s dairy experience stems from her family. Her grandparents, Gene and Shirley Newell milk cows in eastern Iowa and her aunt and uncle, Mike and Linda Hanson, milk cows near Thief River Falls, Minn.

“I’ve been showing since I was a toddler,” Opitz said.

At 8 years old, Opitz leased Ayrshire heifers from her aunt and uncle, took care of them on her parents’ place in Stearns County and showed them in 4-H. “The next year I wanted more,” Opitz said. “My dad said I awoke my dairy farming gene.”

However, at the age of 14, Opitz started her rst supervised agricultural experience (SAE) as an FFA member.

“I bought my cattle instead of leasing them,” Opitz said. “That’s when I decided I wanted to milk cows.”

With the dream of starting her own dairy, Opitz housed her cows on two other dairies, and worked with Minnesota DHIA and other dairy farms to learn all she could.

“I saw a lot of different setups and picked farmers brains,” Opitz said.

But Opitz learned the most while working on a larger dairy.

“I saw so much in a short amount of time,” Opitz said. “That’s where I learned to diagnose and treat cows, which keeps vet bills down.”

Now, Opitz is doing things on her own, with her own herd of cows, doing what she set out to do at 14 years old.

“It’s exciting that the goal I set 12 years ago is nally happening,” she said. “There’s denitely been bad days, but I think about not being on the farm, and I know there is no way I would want that. I would never go back to doing anything else.”

On the halter, Demmer was condent in Escape’s potential. She said it was their goal to end up in the top six.

“Your goal is always to be in the top six [in the Jug],” Demmer said. “They place the rest of the class, but pull out the best six in no particular order. The crowd cheers for their winner as

While Demmer was waiting to enter the ring, Krejci walked around to look at the other 16 animals competing in the class.

“We knew she looked the best she possibly could have,” Krejci said. “We thought we might have had a good chance to be right up there.”

In the end, a beautiful mammary system is what

carried the cow to the top.

“She milks really well,” Demmer said. “The judge said that was the deciding factor as to why she won.

And she is such an easy cow to work with.”

This isn’t the rst Jug win for the couple, as they rst received the honor in 2014 with Discoverys Tequila Jewelene. The couple exhibited the now 5-year-old cow again this year, who was

To win the Jug is a dream come true, but to win it twice in three years is indescribable, Demmer said.

“The Jug is a historic event for the Jersey breed; 63 years and it’s still going on. Ever since we were young, both of us dreamed of showing in it and winning it all some day,” Demmer said.

“The feeling is unbelievable. Not many win multiple times, let alone in a three year timespan.”

In addition to Escape and Jewelene, the couple also exhibited a senior 2-year-old, Discoverys

Together, the three cows came out on Monday to be named the All-American Best Three Senior Females. Additionally, all three were named Best Bred and Owned in their classes, collectively leading Demmer and Krejci to receive Premier Breeder honors.

Demmer said it’s one of the most memorable shows they have ever experienced.

“This is probably the most memorable show we have been in simply because of the few animals we brought and the multiple awards we won,” Demmer said.

The cows will be returning to the couple’s farm in Ellendale, Minn. Along with Demmer’s parents, Rick and Gale Demmer, the couple milks 50 Holstein and Jersey cows. The family is focused on breeding for show type qualities and selling genetics.

According to Demmer, the show season is a time to celebrate their farm’s collective efforts.

“Just being able to bring out the animals we have bred, developed and worked with all year is exciting. We like to see how they stack up, always hoping to do well and reconnect with colleagues we only get to see at shows,” Demmer said.

The couple would like to thank the friends and family who have helped and supported their show efforts throughout the past year. They attribute their success to the help of a great crew and the support of their loved ones.

“We appreciate all of the friends and family that support us and especially those who stay home with the cows so we are able to come down here and do what we love to do,” Demmer said.

The couple agrees: it is a show and a show season they will never forget.

“It’s not what we were expecting,” Demmer said. “We were hoping we would come out and do well; the rest hasn’t quite sunk in yet.”

Getting through tough times Workshop discusses stress management, suicide prevention, help for farmers

CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. – As tight margins persist throughout the dairy industry, many farm families are feeling the pressure of shrinking revenues and plateauing or mounting expenses. Some farmers, however, may be struggling more than others. “Coaching Clients through a Rough Patch,â€? a conference for farmers and agricultural professionals and co-hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Extension, Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection and University of Wisconsin Center for Daily Proďƒžtability took place Oct. 25 in Chippewa Falls, Wis. Presentations from the UW Center for Agricultural Safety and Health, the Eau Claire County Department of Health and Human Services, and the Wisconsin Farm Center discussed the effects of stress on the human body as well as suicide prevention and resources for struggling farmers.

Leading off the workshop was Dr. John Shutske, specialist at the Center for Ag Safety and Health, to talk about the changes the body undergoes during short-term and chronic stress. “Stress isn’t always a bad thing,�

Shutske said. “Stress is what helps the gazelle escape the lion, and it helped us as children to get from third to fourth grade. It’s long term stress that is problematic for a lot of people.�

Not only does stress create a strong biochemical response, such as spikes in heart rate and blood pressure, it also affects thinking, Shutske said. “Chronic anxiety is often caused by an overactive amygdala, the part of the brain that’s responsible for emotions and memory,�

Shutske said. “The hippocampus, which is like the body’s thermostat, shrinks under chronic stress as well and the body has a harder time regulating itself as a result.�

In addition, long-term stress also shrinks the prefrontal cortex, the brain region responsible for higher-level thinking. “Families under duress may not be in a position to think through highly detailed situations,� Shutske said.

Shutske also said when an individual is in a situation they have little to no control of, stress rises exponentially. He referenced an experiment where a mouse had the power to shock another mouse. While the mouse being shocked was certainly stressed out, it was the added stress from anticipating the shock that caused the mouse’s body to deteriorate and die. “It is not the level of shock, but the level of control over the shock that created stress,�

Shutske said. “Professionals in agriculture, such as lenders and other consultants, have to

work with their clients to help regain control over a situation.�

Shutske had many recommendations for those working with clients who face a difďƒžcult situation. He said while stress itself isn’t complicated, helping people ďƒžx things can be rather complex. “Help them see things right in front of them and deal with the details later,â€? he said. “Make it concrete, and realize that thinking about the future is a heavy lift for them right now. When an individual is under stress, emotions trump all else, and helping farmers regain a sense of positive control is crucial.â€?

Brook Berg, Eau Claire County family living educator, took center stage to speak about Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR), a training program geared toward preventing suicides in at-risk individuals.

QPR is intended to offer hope through positive action. Berg identiďƒžed those in need of QPR as people who directly mention suicide – a direct cue – and those who offer indirect cues by hinting at taking their lives through statements like, “Everyone would be better off without me.â€?

Monday typically sees the highest rates of suicide, with the weekends being lowest, Berg said. She also said increased participation in self-injury and substance abuse, stockpiling guns or pills, or giving away prized possessions are speciďƒžc behaviors and activities that may indicate contemplation of suicide and therefore warranting the use of QPR. “A cry for help is a cry for help,â€? Berg said. “The more signals and clues present, the more serious it is.â€?

Berg also said if you’re in doubt about how a client is dealing with a daunting situation, ask and then take action. Tell them you’re on their side, and you’ll get through this together. “Go beyond Midwest nice, and if they are really struggling, try to offer hope in any form. Be compassionate and persistent, then refer them to help by either taking them directly to someone or somewhere. The next best thing is to get a commitment from the person to accept help.�

Mark Weihing, supervisor and agriculture program specialist at the Wisconsin Farm Center, introduced the center’s programs, which are often regarded as a well-kept secret to many farmers who may not know or may not feel comfortable reaching out to.

The center, funded by state tax dollars, provides services such as farm succession planning, troubleshooting, an emergency helpline and mediation services at no cost to the farmer. “Many farmers over the years said they’d been wanting to call the center for months or years,� Weihing said. “All it takes is a phone call that lasts maybe a few minutes.�

A few minutes is often all it takes to think through a stressful situation, remedy a conďƒ&#x;ict or even save a life. “We just want to help farmers help themselves,â€? Shutske said.

October Class III down $1.57 from September

The Agriculture Department announced October’s Class III benchmark milk price at $14.82 per hundredweight (cwt.), down $1.57 from September and 64 cents below October 2015, but is 39 cents above California’s comparable 4b cheese milk price. It equates to about $1.27 per gallon, down from $1.41 In September and $1.33 a year ago. It is the lowest Class III price since June, 2016 and the lowest October Class III since 2009’s $12.82. The Class III average now stands at $14.42, down from $15.98 at this time a year ago and $22.83 in 2014.

Class III futures indicate the price will reverse direction in November but then fall again in December. The November contract was trading late Friday morning at $16.80 and December was at $16.45. The January 2017 contract was at $15.99; February at $15.98; and March at $16.10 per cwt.

The October Class IV price is $13.66, down 59 cents from September, $2.77 below a year ago, and is also the lowest since June 2016 and the lowest November Class IV price since 2009. Its ten month average is at $13.65, down from $13.97 a year ago and $23.01 in 2014.

California’s October 4b cheese milk price was announced by the California Department of Food and Agriculture at $14.43 per cwt., down 81 cents from September, 32 cents below October 2015, and the lowest level since June 2016. It lost $1.10 in September. That put the 4b average at $13.72 for the year so far, down from $14.63 at this time a year ago and $20.57 in 2014.

The October 4a butter-powder milk price is $13.11, down 47 cents from September, $2.61 below a year ago, and the lowest 4a since May, 2016.

The 4a average stands at $13.25, down from $13.81 a year ago and $22.93 in 2014.

Tuesday’s Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction sustained the reversed direction of the previous event on October 18. The weighted average for all products offered jumped 11.4 percent, following the 1.4 percent gain last time. It’s the biggest gain since the 12.7 percent rise on August 16, 2016.

Whole milk powder led the charge, up a whopping 19.8 percent, after gaining 2.9 percent October 18. Skim milk powder was up 6.5 percent, after inching 0.3 percent lower last time. Butter followed, up 4 percent, after a 2.6 percent rise, and anhydrous milkfat was up 2.6 percent, following a 1.1 percent increase last time. Cheddar cheese inched up 0.9 percent, after dropping 3.7 percent last time.

Losses were led by buttermilk powder, down 5.4 percent, after it inched up 0.2 percent last time.

Rennet casein was down 4.8 percent, after losing 4.5 percent, and lactose was down 4 percent, following a 5.6 percent jump last time.

FC Stone equated the average GDT butter price to $1.8710 per pound U.S., up from $1.8204 in the October 18 event. CME butter closed Friday at $1.8925 per pound. GDT Cheddar cheese equated to about $1.5116 per pound U.S., up from $1.4923 last time, and compares to Friday’s CME block Cheddar at $1.90. GDT skim milk powder, at $1.0564 per pound U.S., compares to 99.95 cents per pound last time, and the whole milk powder average, at $1.5045 per pound U.S., is up from $1.2519 per pound in the last event. The CME Grade A nonfat dry milk price closed Friday at 84 3/4-cents per pound.

strong result which will have Fonterra’s board pondering whether an increase to the milk price forecast is justied. Any move just yet may be premature but any threats of demand for whole milk powder (WMP) stalling at $3,000 per MT seem to have been removed. However, there will be ongoing concerns about the continually absent Middle East and African buyers, and whether these prices will hold if Chinese buying subsides. Meanwhile, the spread between WMP and skim milk powder continues to widen, forcing stream return decisions and potentially putting a further squeeze on Oceania fat availability.”

You’ll recall that preliminary USDA data reported September milk production at 16 billion pounds, up 2.3 percent from September 2015. USDA’s latest Dairy Products report shows where that milk went.

September cheese output totaled 981.2 million pounds, down 1.8 percent from August, but 1.6 percent above September 2015. That brought year to date (YTD) production, to 8.96 billion pounds, up 1.9 percent from a year ago.

California produced 202.5 million pounds of that total, down 1.5 percent from August but 4.9 percent more than a year ago. Wisconsin, at 258.9 million pounds, was down 0.9 percent from August but 3.3 percent above a year ago. Idaho was off 0.1 percent from a year ago while Minnesota was down 1.4 percent.

Italian cheese output was at 420.7 million pounds, down 0.9 percent from August but 4.4 percent above a year ago, with YTD at 3.9 billion pounds, up 4.2 percent.

Mozzarella, at 329.1 million pounds, was up 3.8 percent from a year ago and YTD was at 3.1 billion pounds, up 3.6 percent.

Total American type cheese hit 378.3 million pounds, down 2.9 percent from August, 0.3 percent above a year ago, with YTD output at 3.5 billion pounds, down 0.1 percent.

Cheddar output amounted to 270.2 million pounds, down 0.5 percent from a year ago; with YTD at 2.5 billion pounds, down 0.8 percent.

Butter churns produced 133.1 million pounds, up 2.3 percent from August, but 0.4 percent below a year ago, with YTD output at 1.4 billion pounds, up 4.7 percent.

California butter output totaled 39.97 million pounds, up 4.6 percent from August and 3.8 percent above a year ago. New York churns were up 26.9 from 2015.

Yogurt output amounted to 436.1 million pounds, down 2.1 percent from a year ago, with YTD hitting 3.6 billion pounds, down 1.1 percent.

Nonfat dry milk production totaled 125.6 million pounds, up 6.8 percent from August, 4.7 percent above a year ago, with YTD output at 1.3 billion pounds, down 7.0 percent. Skim milk powder production, at 38.4 million pounds, was up a whopping 48.3 percent from a year ago, with YTD output at 415.1 million pounds, up 30.4 percent from 2015.

Dry whey output totaled 74.5 million pounds, down 6.0 percent from a year ago, with YTD hitting 719.5 million pounds, down 1.0 percent.

The report also showed September nonfat dry milk stocks at 216.1 million pounds, down 8.0 percent from August but 2.1 percent above a year ago.

and 20 cents above a year ago. The Cheddar barrels started the week by jumping 13 1/4-cents, largest single day gain since July 31, 2008 when barrel cheese rallied 15 cents, reports FC Stone. The barrels nished Friday at $1.86, up 26 1/4-cents on the week and 21 cents above year ago, with only three cars of block trading hands on the week and 16 of barrel. The blocks have gained 35 cents in three weeks and the barrels have gained 40 cents.

FC Stone’s Dave Kurzawski asked in his November 1 Early Morning Update; “If the spot market is an inventory management tool of last resort, does it really care about where the lion’s share of buyers covered holiday needs? No, the spot market only cares about the last guy. How much does he need and what price is he willing to pay? We’re about to nd out.”

Dairy Market News (DMN) reports that Midwest cheese output is “strong and many manufacturers are using all the milk available to them.” “A few processors are surprised the milk supply is not a little heavier. Some contacts mention they could run a few more loads, but are having trouble nding available milk. Industry contacts note an increase in cheese orders. Sales seem to be picking up as the Fourth Quarter holidays draw closer. Inventories are generally comfortable, but, in some cases blocks are a little tighter due to the seasonal increase in demand.”

Western cheese production is also seasonally strong and active, says DMN, with milk supplies in good balance with manufacturing needs.

“A few processors suggest milk is nding its way into cheese vats as opposed to other dairy products.

Cheese inventories are stable. Orders for holiday retail demand are increasing and industry contacts report a solid pull from food service accounts.”

CME cash butter, after jumping 16 1/2-cents the previous week, closed the rst Friday of November at $1.8925 per pound, down 3 1/4-cents on the week and 99 1/4-cents below a year ago. Twenty one cars traded hands on the week.

Class II processors are pulling “signicant cream volumes,” reports DMN, but butter churning “remains active in the Central region.” “Most production schedules are centered on print butter as retailers’ orders increase along seasonal patterns.

Food service demand is fair to good.”

Western producers report butter is moving well, says DMN. “Demand for retail butter is seasonally heavy and helping draw down inventories. Cream is in good supply and manufacturers are not opposed to buying a few extra loads of cream to keep production at or near full capacity.”

Spot Grade A nonfat dry milk climbed to 89 cents per pound Wednesday but then retreated and closed Friday at 84 3/4-cents per pound, down three-quarter cents on the week and 4 1/4-cents above a year ago. Eleven carloads traded hands.

Meanwhile; a higher All-Milk price and lower feed costs pushed the milk feed price ratio higher for the fourth consecutive month. The September ratio is 2.47, up from 2.42 in August and compares to 2.23 in September 2015, according to the Agriculture Department’s latest Ag Prices report.

The index is based on the current milk price in relationship to feed prices for a dairy ration of 51 percent corn, 8 percent soybeans and 41 percent alfalfa hay; in other words, one pound of milk today purchases 2.47 pounds of dairy feed containing that blend.

The September U.S. average All-Milk price was $17.30 per cwt., up 20 cents from August but is 20 cents below September 2015. California’s All Milk average of $15.74, was down 22 cents from August, 2 cents above a year ago, but the lowest in the U.S., while Wisconsin’s, at $17.90, was down a dime from August, dead even with a year ago, and $2.16 above California’s.

September corn averaged $3.22 per bushel, up a penny from August but 46 cents per bushel below September 2015. Soybeans averaged $9.43 per bushel, down 50 cents from August, but 38 cents per bushel above September 2015. Alfalfa hay averaged $137 per ton, down $1 from August, and $23 per ton below a year ago.

Looking at the cow side of the ledger; the report shows the September cull price for beef and dairy combined averaged $74.50 per cwt., down $6.10 from August, $29.50 per cwt. below September 2015, but $2.90 above the 2011 base average of $71.60 per cwt. Quarterly prices received for milk cows averaged $1,690.00 per head in October, down $40 from July and $290 below October 2015.

The Daily Dairy Report says the dairy Margin Protection Program margin for September is $9.49, up $1.06 from the July-August 2016 margin of $8.43. It says “The October margin will retreat but not enough to pull the September-October average margin below the maximum MPP coverage of $8 per cwt.”

Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) accepted 11 requests for export assistance this week from member cooperatives to sell 1.78 million pounds of cheese and 652,568 pounds of butter to customers in Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and Oceania.

The product has been contracted for delivery through January 2017 and raised 2016 exports to 44.2 million pounds of cheese, 10.98 million pounds of butter (82 percent milkfat) and 19.1 million pounds of whole milk powder to 23 countries.

Dairy industry leaders and producers met this week in Nashville for the joint annual meeting of the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF), Dairy Management Incorporated, and United Dairy Industry Association.

A NMPF press release stated that President Jim Mulhern “Commemorated the centennial of one of Washington’s leading agriculture policy groups by ensuring that its commitments have not altered, and that NMPF plans to continue its aggressive dedication to issues like animal care, economics, trade and nutrition.”

“The dairy farming landscape, and the world outside of it, have changed considerably,” Mulhern began. “The numbers of farms have shrunk, the world marketplace has become more competitive, and consumers are becoming increasingly interested in how their food is produced. But these differences, these hurdles, will not be a deterrent for us.”

He said the Margin Protection Program is “still the right program for the dairy industry’s future, even though it has yet to live up to its intended potential amid a struggling dairy economy.” He said “NMPF is committed to determining the necessary adjustments, such as restoring the margin feed cost adjuster to the level NMPF originally intended, and having Congress pass them.”

He called for immigration reform and pledged to “seek opportunities for dairy all over the world, including pushing for passage of free trade agreements such as the Trans-Pacic Partnership, strengthening export assistance programs like CWT, and holding countries accountable for protectionist behavior.” He also praised “the growing momentum that is changing consumer perceptions on the role of fat in a healthy diet.”

The holidays are fast approaching and manufacturers are ramping up output of dips and spreads. Retailers are stocking up on cream cheese and butter for customers whose festivities feature homemade treats.

This has tightened cream supplies in some regions, particularly the East. Dairy Market News reports “active interest from international markets” which is further constricting the volume of available butterfat. Like the U.S., Canada has seen an uptick in butter demand, but supplies have not grown as quickly north of the border, so Canadian imports of U.S.

the discount that U.S. butter now holds relative to European product, U.S. butter exports are likely to continue to grow.

Cream multiples — the factor used to convert the CME spot butter price to a raw cream price — have considerably lagged historical averages for much of the year. But in the East, they now stand slightly higher than year-ago levels and well above the unusually low values reported in 2014. In the Central and West regions, multiples are still below where they stood at this time last year but above 2014 levels. Plentiful cream, as evidenced by low multiples, likely contributed to butter makers’ propensity to run hard this year. Through September, U.S. butter output is up 4.7% from a year ago. This is the largest year-over- year increase in the Àrst three quarters of the year since 2011. Conversely, when multiples are high, butter manufacturers face stiffer competition and slimmer margins, which can slow churning activity.

Strong seasonal demand appears to be pulling CME cash cheese and butter prices higher. Cheddar block price stands at its highest level since mid-November 2014.

The current rally is not unprecedented and has been aided by a slowdown in cheese imports during Q3 2016 as U.S. spot cheese prices and global cheese prices converg. … only Cheddar cheese less than 30 days of age is eligible to be sold at the CME spot market. Most of the previous November cheese market rallies faded by month’s end as cheese production seasonally grew, increasing supplies of CME-eligible Cheddar.

gold soared. By the time the stock market ofÀcially opened this morning, though, election results were known and calm returned. The U.S. equity markets Ànished higher on the day, and the dollar index climbed to its highest Ànish in more than a week. The grain markets suffered a second shock. USDA surprised the trade, forecasting larger corn and soybean yields than the already record-breaking Àgures it reported in October. The agency estimates the corn yield at 175.3 bu. per acre, up 1.9 bu. from last month. This put corn production at 15.23 billion bushels, more than 7% larger than the previous record set two seasons ago. USDA also increased its corn demand forecast, but by a smaller margin. Thus, inventories of corn are expected to stand at 2.4 billion bushels when the 2016-17 season ends, the largest stockpile since 1988. USDA now estimates soybean yields at 52.5 bu. per acre, up 1.1 bu. from last month and 4.5 bu. from last season, an increase of 9.4%. The agency made a few minor tweaks to demand and expects end-of-season stocks to climb to a 10-year high of 480 million bushels. This Àgure is noticeably larger than agricultural economists anticipated. With that, the corn and soybean markets took a sizeable step back, suggesting that dairy producers’ feed costs will remain low.

Dairying with a chance of hurricanes

Rucks family manages 1,500-cow herd 35 miles off the Atlantic coast

OKEECHOBEE, Fla. – In the heart of hurricane season, Sutton Rucks left his show animals at World Dairy Expo to y home on Oct. 4 before Hurricane Matthew was predicted to hit the Atlantic coast of Florida, just 35 miles from his dairy farm.

“I helped my son prep for the incoming hurricane,” Rucks said. “Thankfully, it went 35 miles further east and missed us. We dodged a bullet.”

Weather conditions like this are not uncommon for his area. Hurricane season lasts

June 1 through Nov. 30 with hurricanes being most prevalent between August and October. Rucks, his wife, Kris, and their children, Lindsey, 26, and Garrett, 24, milk 1,500 cows on their farm, Milking R Inc., near Okeechobee, Fla. “We’ve been through this before,” Rucks said. “We lost the roof of our parlor during Hurricane Francis in 2004.”

With precipitation from hurricanes, Rucks get an annual average rainfall of 47 inches with the majority falling between April and December.

“This year has been an El Niño year. From Sept. 1 until today (Oct. 21), we’ve gotten 32 inches of rain,” Rucks said.

The Ruckses are also just north of Lake Okeechobee and the everglades with a lot of smaller watersheds nearby.

“We’re in a very environmentally protected area,” Rucks said. “In 1986, there was a huge algae bloom in Lake Okeechobee, which brought on several regulations for dairy farmers in the area.”

The Rucks family made sure to continue keeping water quality a priority on their farm, which earned them the Commissioner’s Ag Environmental Leadership Award in 2014.

One thing they did to stay in compliance with the regulations was to put in a three-stage

lagoon on their farm.

The three sand bedded freestall barns are ushed twice a day with the manure entering the rst stage lagoon along with the wastewater from their parlor.

“The solids settle in this lagoon and the water is moved to the next lagoon,” Rucks said.

Once the nutrient rich water enters the second stage lagoon, it is pumped to a center pivot irrigation system and applied to 300 acres of their cropland.

“We don’t use any fresh water to irrigate. It’s all recycled water,” Rucks said. “Irrigating is unique for our area because we get so much rain, but we use it during our drier

months from December to the beginning of April.”

The Ruckses also gave up nearly 100 acres of their 1,200 acres of land – most of which is in pasture – to use as a rainwater storage pond.

“We dug ditches to help capture the rain water because it’s so at here,” Rucks said.

“We use the rain water for irrigation, too. No water that touches our farm goes into the watersheds in the surrounding area. We also test our wells regularly, and log the application rates, and what we harvested off of each acre.”

Despite this, there is other dairy infrastructure nearby. The Ruckses’ creamery, where their Class 1 milk goes, is 100 miles away, three dairy equipment companies are in the county and four feed mills are in town.

“We still live in the largest dairy county in Florida with 20 dairies here,” Rucks said.

The farm has been in the Rucks family since 1956 when Rucks’ grandfather purchased the site.

Rucks was born and raised on the farm. As he grew older, a future in the dairy industry became his dream.

“When I was 14, I decided to make a career out of it,” Rucks said.

After graduating high school in 1986, he joined his father on the farm full time.

“My family built a double-10 parallel parlor on the land they owned to expand for me to come back,” Rucks said.

Up until 2004, the Ruckses had their cows out on pasture and fed on a concrete feed lane.

“We built a 400-stall freestall barn and expanded the parlor to a double-14 that year,” Rucks said. “Our fresh cows and high producing cows were kept in the freestall barn.”

Two years later, the Ruckses built a 600-stall freestall barn to make room for all 950 cows they were milking in 2006.

By 2014, the Ruckses installed a sand lane to reclaim the bedding and built a calf barn with automated calf feeders.

“We’d been shipping calves to a farm in western Ohio,” Rucks said. “We wanted to bring it back in-house. It’s worked well for us.”

The most recent change came last year when they built a 500-stall freestall barn.

“We wanted a place for the remainder of our milking herd, dry cows and maternity pens,” Rucks said. “The heifers are still on pasture.”

The next project Rucks hopes to tackle is the parlor.

“It’s getting old, and we’re only milking twice a day since our parlor is running 24 hours a day,” Rucks said.

“There’s been a lot of family discussion about committing the money to get it done with the milk prices right now,” Rucks said.

Along with additional buildings, both Lindsey and Garrett have returned to work full-time on the farm. Lindsey manages the calves and Garrett manages the crops and 1,000 head of beef cattle on the family’s two separate ranches.

“I’m very proud they want to be a part of it,” Rucks said. “It’s truly a family farm.”

Most of all, Rucks is proud to accomplish what he set out to do at 14.

“I’m glad I get to live my dream,” Rucks said. “I’m the third generation, and I’m grateful I get to keep it going into the fourth generation.”

precipitation, temperature and humidity levels are also quite high, especially from April to December. The heat index generally stays above 100 degrees.

“If we have 10 days from June to November where the heat index doesn’t get over 100 degrees, we’re lucky,” Rucks said. “It can get horrendously uncomfortable here.”

The climate has dictated how the Rucks family manages their dairy, including building the freestall barns and calf barn with open sides – a common practice in the area.

Those barns also each have 80 to 100 54-inch fans set by a thermostat and misters along the feed lanes.

Even out in the pastures, the Ruckses have cooling ponds and shade cloths for the cattle.

“Cooling the cows during the summer is a big priority for us,” Rucks said.

“Thankfully, our winters are much cooler. The coldest it’s gotten was 8 degrees.

Usually, we are in the upper 40s to 50s for a low.”

Although the temperatures are sweltering in the summer, Rucks does not let that dictate his breeding schedule.

“We need milk 365 days a year, so we don’t seasonally breed,” Rucks said.

However, the hot and humid climate does not allow the Ruckses to grow alfalfa for haylage.

In place of alfalfa, Rucks grows bermudagrass and cuts it every 28 to 30 days to chop for haylage.

“Twenty-eight days is the magic number,” Rucks said. “At 28 days, it has 14 percent protein and a neutral detergent ber (NDF) of 50 percent, but 10 days later, it’s like straw with 10 percent protein and a 68 percent NDF.” They also grow corn for corn silage and chop sweet corn after a local farmer has picked it.

“We planted our corn in the rst part of February and chopped it by Memorial Day,” Rucks said.

Only 38 percent of the ration consists of roughage with 13.5 pounds of regular corn silage, 5 pounds of haylage and 3 pounds of sweet corn silage.

“Most people wouldn’t think to use sweet corn for silage, but the sugar works in our diet,” Rucks said. “It’s also a way to get more forage in our ration.”

The remainder of the ration consists of soybean meal, canola meal, citrus pulp, ground corn and a mineral pack, which is all purchased.

“Citrus pulp is the only local byproduct we feed regularly,” Rucks said.

“But sometimes we feed a local bakery product that is dried down and milled.”

Since the corn the Ruckses grow is used for silage, the family brings in their whole corn from a farmer 28 miles away.

“We have a contract to pay so much per ton,” Rucks said. “It’s better than the 60 miles we were shipping from before.”

Corn harvest takes priority at Alma Center dairy on Nov. 4

ALMA CENTER, Wis. – As trees begin to lose their leaves, daylight starts getting shorter and temperatures get cooler, farmers are busy outside harvesting what they’ve worked all season to produce.

The morning of Nov. 4 was no different for Shane Heller, who farms with his father, Blake, and brother, Cody, to milk 1,500 cows and raise 5,000 acres of corn, soybeans and alfalfa. That day, he would work with his employees as they

worked towards harvesting the farm’s remaining acres of corn.

Shane has always enjoyed farm mechanics and eldwork.

As he arrived to the farm long before the sun began to rise, he walked into the farm’s machine shed to get ahead of the day’s projects.

“This is where I’m most comfortable,” Shane said.

“I don’t think I would enjoy farming quite as much if I had to manage the cows. That’s what makes Cody and I a good team.”

ence, manages the dairy herd and oversees the day-to-day activities of the cows. The herd is milked three times a day around the clock in a double-18 parallel parlor.

The cows are housed inside a freestall barn on bedding solids that are a result of the farm’s methane digester, installed in March 2013.

Thousands of bushels of corn rotated through the wet bin before entering the grain bin. While a grain trucks unloaded, a semi arrived to haul away a load of dried corn to be sold. Although Shane usually is out in the eld with his crew, he was spending the day as a runner, getting employees gasoline, oil and hydraulic uid as they needed.

During the full swing of harvest season, Shane said having a runner is necessary.

“During harvest, my dad usually runs the dryer and the takes the truck with fuel and oil for everyone. Everyone needs one of those, especially on days when the combine, tractors and trucks are farther away from the farm,” Shane said.

While at the dryer, Shane lled up the tractors that were running the augers with hydraulic fuel and checked in with the crew to make sure everything was in order both onsite and in the eld.

With everything running smoothly, Shane went out to check in with the eld crew working to harvest the remaining 1,100 acres of corn. Of the Hellers’ 5,000 acres, 3,100 acres are for corn, 1,100 acres for soybeans and the remainder is for alfalfa. Of the 3,100 acres of corn, 500 acres were harvested for corn silage, approximately 200 were harvested for high moisture corn and the remaining 2,400 acres is combined as dry corn.

This time of year denitely is a busy time for everyone at Heller Farms.

“From the middle of September all the way through December, we all put in some long hours,” Shane said.

Most days during harvest, after the

last crop of alfalfa is complete, Shane will spend the majority of the day in the plow following the combine. He said they always have someone plowing during harvest in order to get the ground worked up before it starts to freeze.

“Most days, I’ll get to the farm at 5 and will be plowing up ground until 10 at night,” Shane said. “We plow as we harvest so it gets done before everything freezes. I don’t like to plow in the springtime because we have just as much to work on with planting.”

With a lot of ground to cover, Shane also manages a variety of employees helping to get the job done. He said he hopes he is regarded as someone who respects those with whom he works with.

“As a business owner and farmer, it is important to remember you aren’t above anyone,” Shane said. “Employees don’t work for you; they work with you. We are all working toward the same common goals.”

For the remainder of the day, Shane continued to do much of what he had done that morning: visiting employees, delivering materials to the eld and making sure the remainder of the day’s harvest went smoothly.

While the days get long, Shane said this time of year is the most rewarding.

He said every day is an opportunity to make the farm better for tomorrow.

“It’s that feeling at the end of the day knowing you did something worthwhile,” Shane said. “Not everybody gets to say they did something during the day that will make them more successful going forward; that’s something I get to experience every day.”

An industry pioneer Kjome earns award from National Dairy Shrine

ROCHESTER, Minn. – Throughout his career, Dave Kjome combined his ability to connect with people with his love for the industry he gained from growing up on a dairy farm.

“I was good at getting to know people and remember their names,” Kjome said. “I was good at thinking on my feet, and I could stay positive while speaking in front of a crowd, whether young or old.”

“After I graduated [from college] I decided I wanted to get out and see something rather than go back to the farm,” Kjome said.

He rst worked as a eldman for the American Guernsey Association, traveling in Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, Illinois and Indiana.

“I visited with farmers and went to meetings. I tried to rally people around the breed,” he said. “That was the time when the Golden Guernsey milk label was big.”

Wanting to try a different aspect in the dairy business, Kjome then went to work as a sire analyst for Tri State Breeders in Westby, Wis. After ve years, Kjome wanted less time on the road to be with his family – he and his wife, Sue, eventually had two children – and took a job as a 4-H agent in Winona County.

“It was a good experience.

I got kids enthused [about 4-H] and took them to many area and state events,” he said. “We really saw 4-H grow in Winona County at the time. It’s a people business and that’s what drives me.”

He then returned to college for a master’s degree in dairy farm management from Michigan State University and returned to the area to be a loan ofcer at a bank.

These qualities helped him put time and effort into making the dairy industry better in any way he could. It’s also what helped him earn the Pioneer Award from the National Dairy Shrine at this year’s 50th World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis. “It surprised me when I was notied. It’s an honor, but it’s also humbling. [The people who have received this award] are a core group of people who have contributed to the dairy industry,” Kjome said.

Minnesota Extension in Olmsted County in 1977. Extension is where Kjome lived out the rest of his career – for 18 years as director and the rest of his 12 years as a dairy agent for 12 counties in southeast Minnesota.

“I worked with a lot of families in Olmsted County. It is more of an urban county but I still had the opportunity to work with people in agriculture,” Kjome said. “The county was very diversied.”

Kjome highly values the 4-H program and opportunity it brings to give young people experience in agriculture.

“I relied on volunteers at fair time and developed good relationships with ag business people,” Kjome said.

Along with organizing the fair, Kjome judged dairy shows in the state, across the country and a few other countries. During his time as director, he worked with beef farmers and helped start the Pork Producers Association in Olmsted County.

During his time as a dairy agent, Kjome made many farm visits to area dairy producers.

“I could do more sitting around the kitchen table or looking at the cattle rather than in the ofce,” he said.

“I made recommendations,” Kjome said. “I tried to help people do a better job in managing their crops and livestock.”

He also helped with forage production.

“I was really a believer of quality forages. I could see the benet of raising high protein-quality forages and how that helps milk production,” Kjome said.

He loved this role of his job.

“We had a lot of extension meetings that were helpful for people to enhance production and prot,” he said. “You just try to nurture and push people along.

It’s all about education.”

Before his career path, Kjome was born and raised on Boulder Bridge Farm, near Excelsior, Minn. His dad, Olaf, was the herdsman for the Guernsey herd on the farm, which was owned by the Dayton family – owners of the once downtown Minneapolis department store and descendants of Minnesota’s governor, Mark Dayton.

“The farm was a showplace,” Kjome said. “They raised Guernsey cows and Belgian horses.”

The rst 10 years of his life were spent following his father around Boulder Bridge Farm and helping with chores.

“They called me his shadow,” Kjome said.

Then in 1945, the family moved to a farm near Spring Grove, Minn.

“It was a rundown place with no electricity and no running water,” Kjome said.

But they worked to build it up, naming it Valleyland Farm. The dairy herd started with ve would-becull cows from Boulder Bridge Farm they milked by hand.

“My mom and dad had a vision to have a farm for their family and that’s what they did,” Kjome said.

“We didn’t have much. We had a good life, but not one of riches.”

Those younger years for the family were difcult, especially when Kjome’s mom, Stella, contracted spinal meningitis and passed away in 1946. Despite the hardships, the family kept moving forward.

Along with their daily chores before and after school, Kjome participated in 4-H, and he and his four siblings showed their Guernseys. One of Kjome’s biggest awards came when he showed the Grand Champion Guernsey at the Minnesota State Fair 4-H Show in 1951 – a yearling heifer named Valleyland Lucy. “[The judges] really argued and debated about naming her grand champion since she was a yearling,” Kjome said. “They really put a lot of emphasis on [production] records back then.”

After high school, Kjome spent one year at college and then four years farming at home before he realized he needed to change the course of his future.

The Iowa State University dairy judging coach, Dr. Fred Foreman, had stopped by his family’s farm one day. After talking with him and then making a visit to the campus, Kjome found his way to Ames, Iowa to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in dairy science.

After all these years working in the dairy industry, Kjome is humbled to be recognized by National Dairy Shrine.

“I always felt National Dairy Shrine greatly impressed me with the history it has preserved,” said Kjome, who served as the NDS president in 1992. “It really developed the history of the dairy industry over the years.”

And Kjome is part of that history – both with his work and as a Pioneer Award recipient.

“Luckily the good Lord has been behind me in my life’s earthly journey,” Kjome said. “I have been lucky to have good health and a good family.”

World Dairy Expo judge gained love for industry in the Land of 10,000 Lakes

ANGOLA, Ind. – Although Pat “Cowboy” Conroy claims Angola, Ind., as his hometown, his start in the dairy industry began during his childhood while growing up in south central Minnesota.

This year, the former St. Peter, Minn., resident served as ofcial judge for the International Holstein Show during World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis. Conroy has been judging for about eight years.

“I never had the mindset to want to do it. I was just asked once and it snowballed from there,” he said.

For the past ve years, he’s been able to judge on the colored shavings, rst as the associate and ofcial judge of the International Holstein Junior Show, the associate for the International Holstein Show and as the ofcial judge for the International Red and White Show last year. This year’s experience was just as memorable as in the past.

“It’s quite surreal that people pick you to evaluate their cattle. It certainly means a lot. To walk out there and to think that everyone has traveled the distance they have, they put the time and money in all year long for you to decide where their cows will be is an overwhelming experience,” he said.

Nerves weren’t an issue for him.

“I have the attitude that I know the kind I like and if everyone else doesn’t, oh well,” Conroy said.

Being able to look at good cattle is part of the fun of judging for Conroy.

“It’s fun to give your opinion even though it’s likely not everyone agrees with you,” he said.

When in the center ring, Conroy looks for cows that have good udders, feet and legs, and plenty of dairy strength.

“For me, in years past I’ve seen too extreme of cows or heifers winning that are too narrow in the front end or too high pinned or too bad in the feet. I hate that,” Conroy said. “I think, to my point of view, everyone else who milks cows every day was starting to get a little turned off with it.

It makes me happy to step in and win with the kind of cows or heifers I like because I feel they’re the kind of cows day to day farmers appreciate.”

These are the kinds of cows he grew up with and has come to know as ones that remain healthy.

“I always like a more powerful, more balanced cow because many farms I worked at or cattle I’ve been around, whether from childhood to this day, they are the no problem cows. Every time there was a cow with a problem or a sick cow,

she was always a narrow cow, a cow with not a lot of frame,” Conroy said.

His earliest experience with cows came from following his dad at the farm where he was a herdsman.

“I was always out in the barn all the time at a young age,” Conroy said.

Over the summer breaks, Conroy would stay with his friends, the Mueller family, at Elginvue Farms near Arlington, Minn.

“That’s how I got into show cattle. I wasn’t in 4-H. Those guys [the Muellers] showed a lot then. I credit them with giving me an interest in the purebred side of things,” Conroy said. “I always wanted to be at their caliber and more.”

Once he got into high school, Conroy worked for the Annexstad family, who still dairy farms today near St. Peter, Minn.

“They’re really good people. I give them a lot of credit, too. They were great people to work for. They taught me a lot of stuff as well,” Conroy said.

Mostly, his duties consisted of milking the herd; however, it also included heifer chores or whatever else needed to be done.

One of the rst animals Conroy bought was purchased in partnership with the Annexstads, Conroy said.

“They helped me get my start,” he said.

After high school, he worked as a tter preparing cattle for shows.

“Nobody ever really makes a lot of money out of high school. You do it because you love it, but I always invested a lot of money into buying a heifer or something and it gradually built from there,” Conroy said.

Through his work as a tter and a cattle judge, Conroy has traveled to 17 countries.

“The one I enjoy going to the most is Switzerland just because they’re small herds, and they’re very enthusiastic about showing and their own cattle,” Conroy said.

His current job as a cattle dealer of commercial and show cows still allows him to travel and the ability to build business partnerships. He currently owns cattle across the United States and Canada, and in six other countries.

Conroy tries to be home when he can to be with his family – wife, Jeanie, son, Kaiden, 10 and daughter, Zailey, 6.

Although Conroy’s work in the dairy industry now spans the world, it all stemmed from his childhood years when he rst found that spark to ignite his love for dairy.

“I always have [liked cattle] for as long as I can remember,” Conroy said.

“Maybe it’s something you’re born with.”

July mailbox prices higher in all reporting areas Wisconsin, Minnesota both at $16.52, Iowa at $16.15

MINNEAPOLIS – Mailbox milk prices for this past July rose in all 19 reporting areas, according to the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS).

The increase from June averaged $1.27 per hundredweight, bringing the national average to $15.75. The July average this year was down 68 cents, compared to July of 2015.

Milk producers in Wisconsin saw the biggest increase. The jump of $1.74 from July brought the average price in America’s Dairyland to $16.52, compared to $14.78 a month earlier. A year earlier, the average mailbox price in Wisconsin stood at $17.49.

In Minnesota, Gopher State dairy producers posted a gain of $1.56 from June. The July average in Minnesota nished at $16.52, the same as Wisconsin. A year earlier, the Minnesota average was $17.06.

Iowa’s July average totaled $16.15, an increase of $1.65 from June. A year ago, Hawkeye State farmers had a July average of $16.68.

The highest July mailbox price was recorded in the New England States of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. It ended up at $17.04, up $1.05 from June.

Florida saw the second-highest July mailbox price, $16.79. The Sunshine State’s average was up $1.05

Only two other reporting areas recorded a July average above $16. In Illinois, Land of Lincoln farmers got $16.04, up $1.47 from June. And in Washington and Oregon, the July average was one penny behind, at $16.03.

The Northwest States’ price represented a rise of $1.56.

Dairy farmers in southern Missouri ranked next, with a July average of $15.90, up from $14.19 in June. Next in line were farmers in the Southeast States – Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi. They had a July average of $15.88, up from $14.62

The Mailbox Price for all Federal order areas combined was $15.75

the month before.

Continuing to move down through the numbers, milk producers in the Appalachian States – Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia – received a mailbox average of $15.87 for their July milk, up from $15.07 in June.

In Ohio, Buckeye State farmers were paid $15.83, up from $14.86 in June. The next-highest July price came in western Pennsylvania, at $15.79, up from $14.62.

The New York average was $15.76, up from $14.69 one month earlier. And in eastern Pennsylvania it was $15.75,

up $1.05. The only other area to crack the $15 mark was Indiana, at $15.60.

For Hoosier State dairy producers, that was a bump of 94 cents.

Farmers in the Corn Belt States – Kansas, Nebraska and northern Missouri – saw their July average mailbox price rise to $14.93, from $13.62 a month earlier. In western Texas, the month-to-month increase amounted to $1.37, resulting in a July price of $14.87.

California, not a part of the federal milk marketing order system, saw a July average of $14.55, up from $13.54 in June.

In a break from recent trends, dairy producers in New Mexico did not receive the lowest mailbox average. In the Land of Enchantment, the July price nished at $14.07, up from $12.80 in June.

Instead, the lowest mailbox price went to Michigan. Dairy producers in the Wolverine state were paid a July average of $13.98, up $1.98 from June.

This past July, the U.S. average butterfat test was 3.64 percent, while the average protein test was 3.01 percent. Other solids in the milk averaged 5.76 percent.

Mailbox prices are the actual, net amounts farmers see on the checks in their mailboxes. The AMS collects these prices through its federal milk order market administrator ofces. Mailbox prices include all payments farmers received for milk they sold.

These prices also reect all deductions associated with marketing the milk. There’s no adjustment to 3.5 percent butterfat, so mailbox prices reect the actual test of the milk.

The soybeans are running RAINFALL in the upper 50’s and TOTALS that’s the best we’ve Last 2 ever had. The corn is Weeks running around 120 bushels an acre. We had a dry period in June and July that hurt it. It was a unique year; we had a wet spring, dry summer for a while, and good moisture in the fall. I’ve never had a year like this Since April 1 in my life.

There is eight acres of corn that needs to be combined yet. We tried a month ago but the ground was too wet.

The mud was a huge challenge. The corn we have combined ran 250 bushels an acre. We just finished that on Nov. 5.

We would like to make 100 more bales of corn stalks and still have about 130 acres of land to rip.

Despite all the challenges with the weather, the crop turned out fantastic. It was the best crop of soybeans and corn we’ve ever had.

We just finished our corn last Friday; it was really consistent everywhere.

The conventional crop was 210 bushels an acre and the organic was 200. We are two-thirds done with fall tillage and have to do our manure yet. I chopped some corn stalks today (Nov. 8). I hope they are ready on Thursday. There is 5 to 10 percent of the corn left and one-third of the tillage left. It’s been pretty wet. This year has been a challenge with all the rain, but when it’s all said and done we ended up with a really good crop.

The corn is done and averaged 223 bushels an acre. The soybeans finished at 63 bushels an acre. Both were RAINFALL 10 percent above last TOTALS year, which was our Last 2 previous best ever. Weeks We finished our tillage about two and a half weeks ago. We had a lot of rain that was 0” timed well. It made it hard to make hay but it was our best crop Since April 1 ever.

In the last three weeks, we dug up corn ground. Otherwise not much has changed.

We are about three days away from finishing corn.

We are just about done with everything. It was a great crop year as far as yield is concerned. A record year for yield. Hopefully we see the price of corn and beans go up a bit, which I think they will. On the combine, the best yield we saw for corn was 260 bushels per acre and for soybeans it was around 65 bushels per acre. Everyone had a pretty good year and we should have plenty of feed.

I planted some rye last Saturday, so we will see if that all grows well. It’s been a wetter season for us this year than normal.

The last three weeks, I finished up shelling my corn so I am done with harvest. I think we yielded somewhere between 120 and 160 bushels with some fields more and some that were less. I haven’t started tilling yet, but once I empty my manure pit, I might start on that. Overall, it was a very good year. I have never had my hay as good as it was this year. There was plenty of moisture all summer for it. I had about 30 acres at the bottom of the hills that got too wet for the corn, but overall it was a good year.

We finished up the corn, marking the completion of harvest. Most of the corn in this area has not been dried down as much as the farmers wanted it. We had corn averaging 16 to 17 percent moisture and we saw an average of 200 to 240 bushels per acre.

We plan to dry it down and bring it back to feed our cattle. We finished up hay about three weeks ago, as well. Crops throughout the area have been very, very good. All in all, it has been a very good year for the crops but a hard year to harvest. The crop yields were between average and above, but it was the quality of the forage that made the difference. It was a good year but a challenging year with the amount of rainfall we had.

Drawing visitors with their art Reischel family painting silage bags for over 20 years

BLOOMER, Wis. – Most dairy farms have a few visitors coming in and out of the farm gate on a daily basis. While most of those guests are salespeople, consultants, friends or family, one dairy farm in Chippewa County has been known to attract tourists seeking a

slice of rural life with their unique hobby – silage bag paintings.

Dan and Lynn Reischel, who milk 50 cows south of Bloomer, Wis., have been painting bags for the past two decades. While it was meant to be a fun family activity to spend together on an afternoon, it has become a popular attraction for both local and out-of-town guests.

we put them up,” Lynn said.

“It usually takes an hour or two to paint each bag, depending on how much detail we get into and how many colors of paint we have.”

Multiple bags are painted so that, when one bag is emptied, the bag located directly behind it can be seen from the road. The farm art has led to interesting conversations about farming with those who don’t come from an agricultural background.

“People who aren’t ex-

posed to farming are often surprised that we have more than one silage bag,” Dan said.

The silage bag art has attracted visitors from nearby towns along with other parts of the state.

“A photo of our bags appeared in Our Wisconsin magazine once. A couple from Middleton, Wis., just outside of Madison, drove up one weekend just to see them in real life,” Dan said.

“We started when our daughter, Sarah, was about 3 or 4 years old. She’s 27 now,” Dan said. “Our son, Joe, is three years older than her.”

young at the time to get the hang of a spray paint can.

“We had to use an adapter so she could paint with us,” Lynn said.

As Joe and Sarah grew older, the paintings became more detailed and intricate. In years past, their bags were painted with tractors and themes from the movie, Finding Nemo, and the game, “Angry Birds.” Because their farm is located next to a busy county highway, many people stop to take pictures of the bags or to simply to view them.

“A lot of these people that drive by just to stop and look tell us they’ve watched our kids grow up through the paintings,” Dan said.

Sarah, who still enjoys painting the bags with her parents, is now joined by younger family members when the time comes to bring out the paint cans.

“We now paint the bags with our niece, Valerie’s, small children,” Lynn said.

In the spring, bags are typically covered in drawings of rainbows and owers to herald the arrival of a new season. During the fall, the bags

are painted to celebrate Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. They are adorned with pumpkins, turkeys, snowmen, and since their newest helpers are in grade school, the occasional math problem.

“One of Valerie’s kids painted a math problem on the bag, and then had to ask us what the answer

was,” Lynn said. “She eventually gured it out.”

Since their apprentice artists are still quite young, things can get messy when painting the bags.

“The kids gured out that they can paint their hands and make hand prints,” Dan said. “One of them was trying to squeeze the trigger on their can and ended up with a face full of spray paint.”

Fortunately, Lynn said, spray paint can be removed from little hands and faces – and sometimes grown-up hands and faces – with a good helping of baby oil.

Just like the Reischels have kept on with their silage art, they’ve also kept on with dairy farming.

In fact, their family celebrated 100 years of farming this year.

Most of all, Dan described painting the bags as a lighthearted way to spend time with his family.

“It’s a little silly, but we’re still doing it,” he said.

Dairy Products Judging Team wins regional contest South Dakota State University’s Dairy Products Judging Team placed rst in All Products at the 2016 Midwest Regional Collegiate Dairy Products Judging Contest, held October 22 at Kraft Heinz Technology Center in Glenview, Ill. The team also placed rst in yogurt, Cheddar cheese, cottage cheese, butter, and ice cream. A total of 37 undergraduate and graduate contestants from nine universities participated in the contest.

SDSU team members were Bennet Baker, St. Peter, Minn.; Katelyn Johnson, Sleepy Eye, Minn.; Krista Johnson, Russell, Minn.; and Steve Beckman, Lincoln, Neb. The team is coached by Lloyd Metzger, SDSU Professor of Dairy Science and Alfred Chair in Dairy Education, and Natasha Laska, SDSU graduate student.

Krista placed rst overall and rst in butter, second in yogurt, ice cream and cottage cheese as well as fth in milk and Cheddar cheese. As top judge at the regional contest, Krista received the Carl Ziesemer Award. Bennet placed second overall, rst in cottage cheese and yogurt, second in Cheddar cheese, and third in butter and ice cream. Katelyn was ninth overall and placed sixth in cottage cheese.

In the graduate student contest, Steve placed seventh overall and was rst in ice cream and fourth in Cheddar cheese. The contest was hosted by Kraft Heinz Company, and sponsored by 24 dairy companies and suppliers.

Recipients of Michael Goggin Scholarships Prairie State/Select Sires presented six scholarships in the memory of former General Manager Michael Goggin to deserving college students from Iowa and Illinois. Michael Goggin was a Prairie State/Select Sires employee for more than 30 years and served as the organization’s general manager for 20 years. He retired in June 2009 and passed away in August 2012. In 2014, to honor his dedication and devotion to Prairie State/Select Sires, the board of directors began awarding scholarships annually to students pursuing advanced degrees in agricultural-related elds. Applicants must also be a family member of a current Prairie State/Select Sires customer.

National Dairy Shrine elects new president, directors At the 67th annual meeting of the National Dairy Shrine, Alicia Lamb of Oakeld, New York was elected President of the organization. Meanwhile, Dan Bernick of Long Grove, Iowa was chosen as President-Elect. Elected to the Executive Committee along with Lamb and Bernick were: Jim Dickrell, Monticello, Minn., Nate Janssen, Wheaton, Ill., Larry Schirm, Laurelville, Ohio, and immediate past president David Pierson, Lake City, Minn.

UW-Extension agents, specialists recognized for their leadership, innovation University of Wisconsin-Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANRE) agents and specialists received special recognition from their peers for outstanding work, leadership and program innovation. The awards acknowledge the contributions these agents and specialists have made in identifying needs of stakeholders and audiences and then developing and implementing programming to respond to those needs. The seven award categories are Outstanding Agent, Outstanding Specialist, Mentor of the Year, Team/Workgroup Leadership and Responsiveness, Program Innovation, Excellence in ANRE and Friend of ANRE. Carl Duley, UW-Extension Buffalo County agriculture educator, received the Agriculture and Natural Resources program area Outstanding Agent Award in recognition of his ongoing commitment to the values and ideals of UW-Extension and his ability to shape ideas into workable solutions.

Pam Ruegg, UW-Extension milk quality specialist at UW-Madison, received the Agriculture and Natural Resources program area Outstanding Specialist Award in recognition of her commitment to excellence in developing and delivering programs that are stakeholder driven, problem focused and outcome oriented.

Ted Bay, UW-Extension Grant County crops/ farm management agent was awarded the Agriculture and Natural Resources program area Mentor of the Year Award for his ongoing commitment to sharing his knowledge and experience with new colleagues.

The Agricultural Risk Coverage and Price Loss Coverage (ARC/PLC) workgroup, consisting of UW-Extension agriculture agents Nick Baker, Jerry Clark, Bill Halfman, Richard Halopka, Kevin Jarek, Tim Jergenson, Dan Marzu, Scott Reuss, Mike Travis and Ken Williams; and UW-Extension/Madison specialists Paul Mitchell, Mark Stephenson and Jenny Vanderlin received the Agriculture and Natural Resources program area Team/Workgroup Leadership and Responsiveness Award.

Wohlman named MN Deputy Commissioner Minnesota Department of Agriculture Commissioner David J. Frederickson has named Matthew Wohlman as the agency’s new Deputy Commissioner.

Wohlman replaces former Deputy Commissioner Jim Boerboom who retired earlier this month.

Wohlman has been serving as Assistant Commissioner since 2011. During his tenure, Wohlman led the development of the historic Minnesota Agricultural Water Quality Certication Program which helps keep farmers protable while addressing complex water quality challenges across our state.

Wohlman also operates a fth-generation family farming operation in western Minnesota. Prior to joining the Department of Agriculture, Wohlman interned for then U.S. Senator Mark Dayton, was a Legislative Assistant for then State Senator Yvonne Prettner Solon and was an agriculture aide and Outreach Director for Minnesota Congressman Tim Walz.

Wohlman begins his new duties immediately.

A niche in marketing Jersey milk Mapleline Farms gives virtual tour at WDE

MADISON, Wis. – Mapleline Farms, Hadely, Mass., has evolved during the course of its 112-year existence.

From its original focus on crops, the farm is now home to 135 registered Jerseys, whose milk is distributed throughout the Bay State.

Farm owner John Kokoski gave a virtual tour of the 150-acre owned farm and 100 rented, on Oct. 6, at World Dairy Expo, in Madison, Wis. Kokoski said his ancestors founded the farm in 1904.

They chose the Hadley area of Massachusetts for its rich soil near the Connecticut River.

In those early days, the farm supported a small herd of cattle and grew produce.

For two generations, Mapleline Farms concentrated on crops such as tobacco, onions and potatoes.

Things began to change in 1986. That is when John Kokoski, the fourth generation on the farm, took over from his father and laid the foundation of a herd of registered Jerseys.

Early on, Kokoski decided to add value to the farm’s

milk by selling it directly to consumers. But to do that, he had to haul the milk to a bottling facility and then truck it back to the farm.

That changed in 2004 when he bought his own processing and bottling equipment. The business has grown to the point that it now makes and markets a wide range of uid products. They include avored milk, orange cream and a Christmastime favorite – egg nog.

Each month, the processing plant on Mapleline Farms goes through 275,000 pounds of milk. Most of the milk comes from Mapleline’s own Jersey herd. Kokoski said he sometimes buys milk from neighboring farms when demand is strong.

Kokoski described his home area as highly urban.

But, the concentration of population helped him build the business. Mapleline Farm’s milk is featured at many businesses, including restaurants, bakeries and coffee shops.

Kokoski noted that one of his customers is the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, his alma mater. Four other campuses also buy the farm’s milk.

In 1995, the innovation of packaging the milk in returnable, glass bottles helped the business grow.

“Neighbors loved the idea of local, fresh milk in returnable bottles,” Kokoski said.

“Soon the local restaurant scene wanted their hands on this rich, delicious milk.”

In 2004, the farm intro-

duced plastic bottles to help meet the wholesale market’s demand for the milk.

What do people like about Mapleline milk? Kokoski said it is the taste, rst, and also the nutritional value.

“Compared to average milk, a glass of Jersey milk has greater nutritional value: 15 to 20 percent more pro-

tein; 15 to 18 percent more calcium and 10 to 12 percent more phosphorus,” Kokoski said. “It also has considerably higher levels of an essential vitamin, B12.”

Turkey leftovers The very rst special meal I cooked as an adult (when I was living on my own at my rst job in eastern Illinois) was Thanksgiving dinner for a couple of friends. I had watched my mom make this meal for years. I had an idea of what it took. There were very few recipes and just a bunch of throwing things together. So I dove in. The meal turned out great but I cooked to feed an army because that was how Mom cooked. I discovered some neat ways to handle all of the leftovers, and I’ve been hooked on Thanksgiving dinner ever since. I love having a table full of food surrounded by family and friends.

The sound of clinking glasses, silverware pinging the good china, spurts of laughter; I just sit back and enjoy these sounds and sights as I give thanks.

I have several goals in mind for Thanksgiving Day. The rst is to be thankful for everything, good and bad.

The second is to ll everyone up with good food and company. The third is to have enough leftovers to send a couple of meals home with everyone. I think these are the same goals my grandmother had every year we had holiday meals at their farm. The day may seem to be crazy and hectic to get everything done, but just remember, it isn’t about the perfect table setting displayed in the magazine. It is about treasuring time together. So enjoy.

One of Michael’s and Austin’s favorite post-Thanksgiving meal is Shepherd’s Pie. It takes all of their favorite dishes and combines them into a one dish meal. I think they leave left-overs just so I can whip this up for them. I don’t mind. It is one of my favorites, too. There really isn’t a true recipe for this dish. It is just a combination of what I have in the fridge at the time. I’ve put

measurements down as a guideline.

You can make it any way you want. The other recipes give the turkey Mexican and Italian avors. By the time I make these dishes, I wish we had Thanksgiving dinner more than once a year.

Shepherd’s turkey pie 3 c. cooked stufng/dressing 1 c. cranberry sauce 1 pound cooked, sliced turkey 10 oz. glazed carrots, green bean casserole or sweet potatoes 1/2 c. gravy 3-4 c. mashed potatoes Heat oven to 350 degrees. Generously butter a pie pan or any other baking dish. Layer the pan with dressing as the bottom crust. Top with cranberry sauce, turkey, veggies and smother in gravy. Use the mash potatoes as the top crust. Place pie plate on a baking sheet.

Bake till heated through and potatoes turn golden. 35-40 minutes.

If the mashed potatoes are stiff, warm them up in the microwave with a little bit of milk. I add shredded cheese to these potatoes to help give it a great golden color and avor.

Mexican turkey roll-ups 2 1/2 c. cubed, cooked turkey 1 1/2 c. (12 oz.) sour cream, divided 3 tsp. taco seasonings, divided 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup, divided 1 1/2 c. shredded cheddar cheese 1 small onion, chopped 1/2 c. salsa 1/4 c. sliced ripe olives 10 our tortillas In a bowl, combine turkey, 1/2 c. sour cream, 1 1/2 tsp taco seasoning, half-can of soup, 1 c. cheese, onion, salsa and olives. Food columnist, Natalie Schmitt each tortilla. Roll up and place seam side down in a greased 9x13 baking dish. Combine remaining sour cream, taco seasoning and soup. Pour over tortillas. Cover with tin foil and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Serve with shredded lettuce and chopped tomatoes.

Taco seasoning is chili powder, cumin, salt, pepper and I like to add paprika. Combine some of each seasonings according to your taste, or you can buy pre-mixed.

Baked rotini 1/2 pound Rotini 2 c. cubed, cooked turkey (or 1 pound ground beef) 1 c. chopped onion 1 chopped green pepper 1 – 28 oz. can diced tomatoes 1 – 6 oz. can tomato paste 1 – 4 oz. can sliced mushrooms, und-

rained 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp each basil leaves and oregano 1/4 tsp each garlic powder and crushed red pepper 2 c. mozzarella cheese shredded Cook rotini according to package directions. Drain. While rotini is cooking, make the sauce. In a large pot add all ingredients except for the cheese.

Simmer on low heat for 20 minutes.

Combine cooked rotini and sauce. In a greased 3-quart baking dish, layer half sauce/meat mixture. Top with 1 c. shredded cheese. Layer remaining mixture and top with cheese. Bake for 350 degrees for 35 minutes. Makes 6-8 servings.

If using beef, cook ground beef with onions and green peppers. Drain fat then add remaining ingredients and follow the remaining instructions.

Just some fun turkey facts about Thanksgiving. Eighty-eight percent of American will eat turkey at Thanksgiving – about 46 million turkeys. Many of them are grown right here in central Minnesota. Did you know old, large male turkeys are preferable to young toms? Young male turkey meat is stringy. The opposite is true for females.

Old hens are tougher birds, hence the phrase, “She’s a tough old bird.”

Natalie, Mark and his brother, Al, Schmitt farm together near Rice, Minn. They milk 100 registered Holsteins under the RALMA prex.

Sour Cream Coffee Cake 2 cups flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. baking powder

1/2 cup butter 1 cup sugar 2 eggs 1/2 carton sour cream (8 oz.)

1 tsp. vanilla

Cream together butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time and mix well. Add vanilla. Mix flour, baking soda, salt, and baking powder in separate bowl.

Alternately add sour cream and flour mixture.

Topping 1/3 cup sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon 3/4 cup chopped pecans (optional) Grease and flour tube pan. Put half the batter in pan and top with half of the topping. Add rest of batter and top with rest of the topping. Press the topping down lightly. Bake 375 degrees for 30-35 minutes.

Sour Cream Drops Cream: 1/2 cup butter and 1 1/2 cups sugar Add: 2 eggs; 1 tsp. vanilla; and 1 cup sour cream Sift Together: 2 3/4 cups flour 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt Chill at least 1 hour. Drop teaspoon size on cookie sheet. Bake 400 degrees for 8-10 minutes.

Icing Melt 2 Tbsp. butter until golden brown. Blend 1 cup powdered sugar and 1/2 tsp. vanilla. Stir in 1-2 Tbsp. of hot milk.
