Radio dial set on tremendous talent

Wick inducted to Farm Broadcasting Hall of Fame

“When the music came on, I would switch the station to listen to another.”

Wick starts his day at 3 a.m., when he heads to the ofce to prepare for the morning broadcast at 6:30 every morning. Then, the four reporters meet at 8 a.m. to discuss story ideas and develop leads. After that, he leaves the ofce.

“We believe it’s important to get out of the studio,” he said. “So, we will go ride in a combine or cover a meeting, whatever it takes to do that job.”

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Picture an 11-year-old kid, nose pressed up against the glass, mystied, watching radio broadcasters at work. That young boy was Don Wick, Red River Farm Network President, who has been inducted to the National Association of Farm Broadcasting Hall of Fame.

Wick participated in the induction ceremony at the National Association of Farm Broadcasters Night of Honors Nov. 8 in Kansas City, Mo. Wick is known for his time as a broadcaster with WNAX in Yankton, S.D., WCCO in Minneapolis, and more recently with Red River Farm Network in Grand Forks, N.D., where he took over as president in 2003.

“I’m so honored,” Wick said. “You never expect to get inducted into something like this. I looked through the list of people who have been named to the hall of fame and it’s

some pretty tremendous talent, so I feel pretty humbled to be put in that category.”

Wick grew up in Alma, Wis., on a 50-cow dairy farm and showed cattle through 4-H, which piqued his interest in farm broadcasting.

“Farm broadcasters from WAXX in Eau Claire, (Wis.), would come interview kids showing at the fair and it intrigued me, but I never thought I could do that,” Wick said.

His interest in radio grew when he worked for a radio station in Wabasha, Minn., during high school. That experience led him to attend Brown Institute for Radio Broadcasting in the Twin Cities. He returned to Wabasha for a year and then spent time with stations in Austin, Minn., Redwood Falls, Minn., and Worthington, Minn., before stepping up to WNAX, WCCO and RRFN. “Growing up, I was a student of radio,” Wick said.

Wick changes hats later in the day, moving on to management and sales responsibilities one would expect the president of a broadcasting company to have.

“I’m really happy I can start my day every day doing the news part that I enjoy so much,” Wick said. “I like staying connected to that.”

“Whether you’re showing up at a county banquet or going to a plot tour or being in a dairy barn, we’re just blessed with great people in this business, and I think that’s what keeps me in this business,” Wick said. “I enjoy working with the people in agriculture. … Whether you’re sitting in Europe, or China or South America, you’re dealing with all the same issues that we’re dealing with in Minnesota, North Dakota or Wisconsin. It all comes down to a people business.”

Joining Wick in the hall of fame are names like Cliff Mitchell, farm broadcaster of KASM, who Wick has admired his whole career.

“He meant the world to me,” Wick said of Mitchell. “Early in my career I didn’t have the money to go to the national meeting, so I rode with Cliff and his wife, Ellie, down to Kansas City, and I think I learned more on that trip than in four years of college. He’s somebody I very much respect.”

Wick offers his two cents on those pursuing a career in farm broadcasting.

“I think you’ll enjoy it,” he said. “It’s something different every day you do it. I’m a big believer in the importance of writing. You need to know how to write to be a successful broadcaster.”

Beyond writing, communication is a skill to master for young broadcasters, also.

“You have to be inquisitive and willing to go out and shake somebody’s hand and be ready to ask them questions,” Wick said. “So, I guess if there’s any advice I’d give anybody, it’d be to have an open mind and enjoy what they’re doing.”

He hopes others view his legacy as honest and fair journalism.

“I hope they think I did a good job telling their stories,” he said. “I still believe in honest journalism and telling both sides of the story. I think farmers are smart enough to make up their own minds. If you tell them the facts, they can gure out their opinion for themselves. We try to be fair in what we do. That’s our goal.”

Benets of increased voluntary waiting period Research-based impact on protability, reproductive performance

Changing protocol is a hard decision to make, and reproduction protocols can be an even bigger gamble. But according to new research from Cornell University conducted by Julio Giordano, the gamble may be worthwhile.

In a webinar hosted by the Dairy Cattle Reproduction Council Oct. 25, Giordano discussed the impact of an increased voluntary waiting period on the duration of reproduction performance and protability.

Giordano researches dairy cattle and reproductive performance and also teaches as an associate professor at Cornell University Department of Animal Science in Ithaca, New York.

Giordano said some reasons to have a waiting period include allowing cows to return to regular cyclical activity before insemination; giving cows time after calving to recover their uterine health by healing tissue and allowing the uterus to shrink back to its normal size.

“This also allows cows time to recover as much body condition as possible that they may have lost,” he said.

“It’s especially important for cows to recover before insemination for maximum pregnancy retention.”

He said reproduction protability has improved through technology and farm management. He went on to describe the concept of his research.

“We know we can gure out a way to get cows pregnant, no question, so now we have an opportunity to nd when it is best to get cows pregnant,” Giordano said.

The presentation then moved toward research that has been conducted prior to his. As he explained the data, one thing became clear: The easier a cow can get pregnant, the more useful it will be to manipulate pregnancy to occur at the ideal time.

Research on voluntary waiting period and its impact has been done for many years. From these studies, one can conclude that, in general, pregnancy rates improve when cows have longer voluntary waiting periods.

If a herd has poor overall reproduction performance, the distribution is spread out, which represents cows getting pregnant late in lactation. When the graph shifts to show an increase in the number of cows getting pregnant on the rst breeding, the distribution changes dramatically. Now, the bulk of the cows are getting pregnant relatively soon after calving, and the distribution

“Today, we have tools and fertility programs that allow you to inseminate a cow at any time, so let’s manage that to maximize the proportion of cows getting pregnant at the end of the voluntary waiting period on the rst try,” Giordano said.

While these ideas sound good in theory, considering an individual’s nancial situation in the equation is essential. Giordano said matching tight distribution of pregnancy rates with a small window of days in milk will lead to maximum protability.

With a at distribution, some cows may become pregnant too early and many will be pregnant too late. If there is better reproduction performance, the opposite happens.

In Giordano’s research, they worked with three commercial dairy farms in New York from March 2014 to March 2015. The herds were split into two groups. The rst group was bred at the average voluntary waiting period of 60 days. The next group was bred one cycle later at 88 days.

The farms each milked between 800 and 1,200 cows, two or three times a day and used rbST every 10 to 11 days starting at 110-120 days in milk.

“We chose a simple comparison, choosing to extend one month over the average voluntary waiting period,” Giordano said about the decision to increase the period to 88 days. “The results were totally expected and in line with what we hypothesized. Extended voluntary waiting period favored a physiological status more conductive to pregnancy, cyclic status of cow, uterine

health, body condition score and overall health.”

Giordano believes these improvements are more conducive to pregnancy. There was a 5.5 percent difference of an overall combined score including; pregnancy health, hormone release, uterine health and body condition score with the longer waiting group.

“All the data we have collected and conducted supports the notion that improved status of cows before rst service translates to better pregnancies,” Giordano said.

He also said producers should consider current economics when deciding what will be the best choice for their farms.

The costs of replacement heifers and beef prices are variables in the equation. Including what the current or near future conditions of replacement animals are or will be will largely impact the voluntary waiting period, said Giordano.

Looking to the future, he predicts that we may apply a longer voluntary waiting period to only the cows that need it. Voluntary waiting periods could pertain to a whole herd, or focus on individual cows.

“For many years, we have treated all cows as equal, but by all these factors, they are not,” Giordano said. “In the future, we will have more tools to measure how cows who appear to be the same may not be protability equal.

But for now, we know that voluntary waiting period is a large factor in cows’ lifetime health and pregnancy, and it can be an affordable decision to make on your farm.”

Harms reinvent their farm to continue in dairying

Bed, breakfast business brings new facet

REEDSBURG, Wis. – Don and Dorothy Harms were looking for a way to continue to make a living on their family’s dairy farm as they began downsizing their herd. With three children grown and leaving them with three empty bedrooms, Dorothy decided to put her hospitality and love of cooking to use, turning their home and Valley Springs Farm into a bed and breakfast venture.

The Harms milk 30 cows near Reedsburg, Wis.. They have downsized their milking herd from about 70 head. They are also in the process of transitioning to beef production and have been building a herd of Red Angus cows, working with direct marketing of beef.

“We believe that small farms can and will continue to exist,” Dorothy said. “You just need to be willing to reinvent yourself. For a long time, we focused on high production.

But today, we aren’t interested in getting better. In order to

continue to farm, we have to become entrepreneurs.”

Finishing their fth season as a bed and breakfast, Dorothy feels their foray into agriculture tourism and hospitality has not only beneted her and Don, but has created a connection between consumers and the family farm.

“Lots of families want the experience of a farm,” Dorothy said. “So many people are so disconnected from agriculture and where their food comes from.”

Each guest receives a customized stay, giving them as much access to learning about the farm as they wish. They share about the heritage that is involved in family farming, with their own farm having been in Don’s family for over 130 years.

“We really let them detail what they want from us in terms of their experience on the farm,” Dorothy said. “We offer short tours of the farm.

Dorothy said many of their guests are from the Chicago area.

“They really think it’s a change to come to Wisconsin,”

Dorothy said. “They like having a relaxing place to stay, and being on the farm is so different from their daily environment.”

Don and Dorothy Harms reinvented their farm to add a bed and breakfast, allowing them to conƟnue farming in the manner that they wanted, without having to look at expansion. through a friend and booked a stay with her daughter, Caroline. After learning about the dairy industry in school, Caroline became interested in the idea of a future career in the dairy industry.

“Caroline has been an animal lover since birth,” Michelle said. “It was neat to be able to see the source of our food that we buy in the stores and to see how the animals are cared for. It really gives you more trust that the food we eat has been lovingly sourced. The Harms have done a great job explaining how the animals are cared for. It’s really amazing to realize how many hats a farmer must wear to run his or her farm.”

During their stay, Caroline experienced farm life rst-hand.

“This morning I got to feed a calf with a baby bottle and last night I got to watch how the cows get milked,” Caroline said. “I didn’t really know how the milk got out of the cow. It was cool to watch how it went through the tunnel into the big tank.”

A variety of guests come to the Harms’ home, ranging from retired couples, families with kids and millennials. Stays typically range from one to four nights. Dorothy works hard to keep their life segmented, allowing her to care for the needs of her guests while maintaining a private life, including having a private area of the house.

She keeps set check-in hours and a set breakfast schedule, making sure her guests understand that morning chores and caring for the cows comes rst.

Don’s role in the hospitality ven-

ture is to keep the farmstead neat, making sure the lawn is mowed and the barn and farmyard is tidy. He enjoys being able to connect with those so far removed from agriculture and sharing the daily occurrences farmers often times come to take for granted.

“There was a boy that I took with me once to go check the beef herd this summer,” Don said. “For me, it was just my daily job, but for him it was a once in a lifetime thing. There was another boy that experienced seeing stars for the rst time in his life while he was staying here.”

While the Harms enjoy opening their home and farm to guests, Dorothy cautions those considering a similar agri-tourism venture to consider the implications.

“You really have to maintain a happy face on the farm, even on the days when things aren’t going well,” Dorothy said. “People are paying to stay with you. You have to keep the drama in the barn.”

Offering the connection that changes a person’s perception of animal agriculture is something the Harms consider to be the greatest compliment.

“We had a guest who was originally from India and after her stay here, she told us that after seeing how our cattle were cared for and treated, she was OK with the idea of eating meat,” Dorothy said. “We were able to change her past cultural perceptions by showing her the truth of what we do on a daily basis.”

Get to know Kristi Getschel of Osceola, Wis.

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am involved in FFA, 4-H and the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association. I have had the opportunity to compete in dairy judging and dairy bowl on a local, state and national level. Through 4-H, I also show Holsteins at the Polk County Fair and Wisconsin State Fair.

Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? I love working with animals, especially dairy cows. These organizations have allowed me to meet other people who share my love for the dairy industry. Although it is hard to choose a favorite organization, 4-H has allowed me to explore the dairy industry in various ways including showing cows and competing in dairy bowl and dairy judging.

Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. I enjoy showing dairy at the Wisconsin State Fair. I like talking with fair goers who walk through the barn and want to learn about the dairy industry.

What’s your favorite social media? Instagram. Every post comes with at least one picture and as the saying goes a picture is worth one thousand words; to me they might be worth even more.

What are your career aspirations? After studying animal science, I hope to follow my passion for livestock by working in the agriculture industry.

What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? The activities taught me how to manage my time between studying, going to events and chores.

Who do you look up to? My dad, because he always puts other’s needs before his own – cows or people.

He is the hardest working person I know and yet expects nothing in return. That is a hard quality to come by.

KrisƟ Getschel is a senior at Osceola High School. She milks 90 cows with her family - parents, Doug and Holly Getschel, and siblings, BreƩ, Cody and Mykayla - in Polk County near Osceola, Wis. Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. I like throwing pottery to make items such as bowls and mugs. It is amazing to see what a pair of hands can create.

Tell us some of your duties on the farm. My main job is to care for the calves. In addition, I milk cows and assist the vet on herd health days.

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? I would educate more people about the benets of dairy products and the importance of agriculture. It is evident that around the world people are losing sight of the value of agriculture.

Farm land rental rates are the largest input cost and a fair farm rent agreement is a challenge in today’s economy with current corn and soybeans prices in 2018.

Negotiating a fair rental agreement that satises the landowner and the farmer is a challenge. Nathan Hulinsky, Extension Educator in Ag Business Management, will provide several ways, by examples, factsheets and worksheets to determine a fair farmland rental rate for both parties.

Topics covered at the meetings will include local historic and projected farmland rental rate trends, current farmland values and sales, a worksheet that will help determine a fair rental agreement. Input costs for 2018 will be presented along with current 2018 corn and soybean prices. Worksheets will examine 2019 costs and what is affordable rent that a farmer will be able to pay in 2019, the rate of return to the landlord at current market values, and exible rental agreements.

Make plans to attend one of these meetings now. Attendees will receive several informative worksheets and factsheets that will help to determine what a fair 2019 farm land rental rate is.

Seven southwestern Minnesota counties now eligible for federal disaster aid A USDA Secretarial Disaster Declaration has been issued for seven Minnesota counties affected by excessive rain, ash ooding, and ooding that occurred from June 17 through July 3, 2018. USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue has declared Murray County a primary disaster area and the counties of Cottonwood, Lyon, Nobles, Pipestone, Redwood, and Rock have been named contiguous disaster counties.

The Secretarial disaster designation makes farm operators in these seven counties eligible for emergency loans from the federal Farm Service Agency (FSA), provided eligibility requirements are met.

“Governor Dayton and I saw rsthand the extensive ood damage to farms and elds in this area of the state,” said Minnesota Agriculture Commissioner Dave Frederickson. “I encourage farmers affected by this disaster to contact their local FSA ofce to determine their eligibility for nancial assistance.”

Minnesota farmers in the eligible counties have 8 months from the date of the Secretarial disaster declaration to apply for emergency loans. FSA considers each emergency loan application on its own merits, taking into account the extent of production losses on the farm and the security and repayment ability of the operator.

Wood Co. Farm Tech Committee shares proceeds with volunteers Area non-prot groups are sharing in the proceeds from Wisconsin Farm Technology Days near Marsheld this summer. The Wood County FTD Food Committee dispersed a total of $103,360 to the 31 organizations which operated six food tents, three ice cream stands and other beverage areas during the July 1012 exposition.

“Our volunteers, along with those working in the distribution area fed over 42,000 people during the show,” said Food Committee Liaison Dawn Vruwink. “A total of 687 volunteers helped with our meal operations throughout the three-day event. Our show would not have been nearly as successful without them.”

Food Committee Chairperson Sarah Salewski adds that nearly $57,000 in food products were donated by more than two dozen vendors, which helped boost the total prots being shared with the volunteer groups. Many of those items were produced in Wood County. ”Cranberries were incorporated into four menu items and local dairy was highlighted through cheese curds, grilled cheese sandwiches, milk and ker,” Salewski said. “In fact, almost as much chocolate milk was consumed as Pepsi.”

Each of the groups were presented with a check during a volunteer appreciation celebration in Pittsville on October 25. The payouts were calculated based on the number of people and total volunteer hours each group provided during their shifts.

Of the groups receiving proceeds, 19 were from Wood County, 6 traveled from Marathon County, 2 from Clark County, 1 came from Portage County, and 3 statewide groups also volunteered their time.

Also this week, a check for $10,880 was presented to athletic students at Marsheld Columbus High School for their volunteer efforts in parking cars at the show.

Meanwhile, the Executive Committee is in the process of determining how to disperse the other projected prots from the event. Those details should be announced before the end of the year. All proceeds will stay in the local area.

Calf care essentials: Four pillars for newborn success No matter how long you’ve been raising calves, it’s important to help build a solid foundation for each new arrival.

“There are four essential elements of newborn calf care that have equal bearing on health and productivity,” says Olson, technical services veterinarian for Milk Products. “Managing these four pillars with careful consistency will help set calves up for future productivity – whether that future is in the milking parlor or the feedlot.”

The four pillars of calf care include: 1. A healthy birth “A calf’s entry into the world can have a tremendous inuence on the rest of its life,” says Olson.

Ensure a healthy delivery: – Allow the calving process to proceed as naturally as possible. Avoid the temptation to grab a calf and pull if the cow is progressing normally. Many important biological events occur during birth, such as the calf taking control of its circulatory system from its mother. If calving requires intervention, keep the health of the calf and cow in mind.

– Assist calves at birth to ensure they start breathing immediately after the umbilical cord breaks. Clearing the nostrils with a clean towel, a poke of clean straw in the nostril, and/or pouring ice water over the head are all ways to make sure newborn calves take that critical rst gasp of air immediately after birth.

“Research has shown the importance of calves being able to sit upright and rest on their sternum within 15 minutes of birth,” says Olson. “If calves are not able to sit up, they will likely need additional care. Discuss with your veterinarian how you can prepare to assist these types of high-risk calves.

“Unlike some species, including humans, cattle do not pass on maternal immunity in-utero,” says Olson.

“Newborn calves need to achieve early immunity through successful passive transfer. The only way they can acquire it is via colostrum.”

There is extensive literature discussing the many aspects of colostrum, but Olson’s “high points” are: – Harvest clean, biosecure colostrum as quickly as possible after birth. Colostrum quality steadily decreases after birth.

– Aim to administer colostrum to calves at 10 percent of bodyweight within 2 hours of birth.[1] A 90-pound calf would equal 9 pounds of colostrum, or about 1 gallon.

– If quality maternal colostrum is not available, feed high-quality colostrum replacer to deliver at least 150 grams of immunoglobulin (IgG).

3. Optimal nutrition A fundamentally sound diet can be achieved through several strategies, which Olson advises setting with a nutrition professional.

“Nutrition program goals should focus on the needs of the calf, combined with the needs of your farm,” says Olson. “For example, heifer calves should be fed to reach breeding maturity at a target age. Other keys to excellent nutrition include: – Develop a liquid ration with adequate volume, total protein, fat, vitamins and minerals. Think of it as a “liquid TMR.” – Choose a highly palatable starter grain with a protein level of at least 18 percent. Begin offering small amounts during the rst days of life.

Always provide clean, free-choice water from the rst day of life. Water is a critical element for hydration, digestion and rumen development.

4. Ideal environment Whether you house your calves in hutches, group housing or individual pens, well-managed calves are clean, dry, comfortable and have clean air to breathe.

“It’s important to remember the physical housing structure is just a part of a calf’s total environment,” says Olson.

Don’t forget: – Bedding choice and management. Clean and uffy bedding allows the calf to nest. Try to use bedding without a lot of dust and keep calves away from wet bedding.

– Ventilation and air quality. As seasons change, it’s important to remember calf ventilation needs also change. In winter, air should exchange four times an hour and in summer 40 times an hour.

– Sanitation. Everything from pen dividers to feeding equipment should be cleaned. Talk to your advisors about developing a sanitation program.

– Cold weather adjustments. Calf jackets can be very benecial in cold climates “Careful attention to each of these pillars will help you build a solid foundation for newborn calves,” says Olson. “If one of the pillars are broken, the entire foundation can collapse.”

For example, calves without adequate colostrum will likely face health challenges that no amount of nutrition can x. Likewise, a perfect ration can be compromised if it is fed using dirty equipment.

“The farms that I see doing all four of these things successfully, are those that write and regularly review protocols,” said Olson. “That way everyone knows what to do and how to do it, every day. The result is a very solid foundation for every one of their calves.”
