Rodney and Dorothy Elliot, Drumgoon Dairy Lake Norden, S.D. (Hamlin County) 2,000 cows, 1700 milking How did you get into dairy farming? Rodney grew up on a beef farm in Ireland, and he wanted to nd his own niche and was drawn to dairy farming. When he was 18 years old, he began milking his own herd of 20 cows and it grew from there. Tell us about your farm and harvest you had this fall. We are the third generation of farmers in our family. Drumgoon Dairy was originally set in Ireland and our herd grew from 20 cows to 140 cows. We were limited to expand any further and found the same circumstances when looking into other locations in Europe. As we learned more about the opportunities in South Dakota, we found it to be a good t for our family and our goals for expanding the milking herd. We began milking in the new barn in December 2006. We are currently milking Holsteins and Holstein/Jersey crossbreds. We are in a cheese market and appreciate the value the crossbreds bring with additional components. Even with the scare of the drought, we are nding yields to be better than expected. What is the biggest challenge you have ever faced since you started dairying? How did you overcome it? Despite the challenging year we faced in 2009 while milking, we still believe the biggest challenge we faced was the BSE and foot and mouth disease outbreak in 1996. Compared to the challenge of a bad market in 2009, there was no market for our animals in Ireland and throughout Europe. Security across boarders became extremely strict, especially for rural communities Why did you choose dairy farming? Compared to beef farming, we saw it as a more protable opportunity and enjoy the lifestyle it brings. What are your plans for your dairy in the next ve years? We hope to milk more cows, but it depends what opportunities arise. What is your favorite technology and why? AI 24 made by Semex. It is an activity collar that tracks when cows are coming into heat and their rumination patterns. Besides improving our reproductive management, AI 24 helps us to identify cows that may be becoming ill more quickly if they are not ruminating normally. What is your favorite tool? Notebook and pen. What is your favorite dairy product? Rodney enjoys ice cream, and Dorothy likes cheese and yogurt What has been the highlight of your dairy career? We enjoy showing our friends from Ireland around our farm. We take great pride in achieving our dream of dairy farming at this scale.

We start applying it as soon as they begin to udder-up. It really brings down swelling for a good start,” says Todd Leiding of Shir-Man Holsteins, Fountain, Minnesota. “We put it on twice a day for a week to 10 days before calving to get udders in good condition,” add daughters Haely and Kayla. The family was in Harrisburg, Pa. recently for the All-American Dairy Show, where Haely and Kayla placed first and second in dairy judging, and their Lanesboro, Minn. FFA team, coached by their mom Stacey, placed first out of 8 states. The family visited the Udder Comfort booth at the AllAmerican to discuss how they use it, and the results. “In side-by-side comparisons, we saw a world of difference between fresh cows that had prefresh applications of Udder Comfort and those that did not,” Todd and Stacey report.

“It’s well worth the cost because the results are there. It works better than other products we’ve tried, and yet it’s soothing to the skin at the same time. “We have faithfully made Udder Comfort part of our herd health regimen.
