Ready, aim, re Duncansons excited for bow, rearms hunting seasons

WINONA, Minn. – From the end of October to the rst of the year, Pat Duncanson knows exactly where he’ll be.

“I just like sitting out in the woods.

I buy a lot of licenses so I can sit out there. I don’t miss many afternoons sitting out in the woods,” he said.

Pat has been an avid hunter since the age of 12, and for the past 28 years, has spent each fall scouting for deer when not milking 100 cows with his family on his dairy near Winona, Minn.

For the past two years, Pat’s son, Derek, has been accompanying him while deer hunting. This is the 12-year-old’s third year hunting.

“I’ve been waiting all year. I’m pretty excited,” said Derek, who ranks hunting as his No. 1 favorite hobby with showing cows ranking a close second.

In order to get more time in the woods, the two participate in the bow hunting season, which starts Sept. 17 and ends New Year’s Eve. “It’s just a bigger challenge,” Pat said about bow hunting. “You have to have them closer and everything has to go right because there’s a lot of movement involved.”

With his bow, Pat has shot four deer and one bear. He shot the bear while

Derek still needs a little more experience in the archery realm.

“I’ve never killed anything with my

bow yet. I missed a buck once,” he said.

Derek has gotten a jump on his hunting, having gone out for the rst time this year on Sept. 24. He also plans

to participate in Minnesota’s special youth deer season Oct. 20-23.

Being good neighbors Stuewes named Carver County Farm Family of the Year

COLOGNE, Minn. – The Stuewes’ dairy is like many others across Minnesota but with one exception – their church sits less than 150 feet away.

Living close to their parish has made being a good neighbor a priority for the Stuewe family and was one of the reasons they were named Carver County Farm Family of the Year. Paul, his wife, Sue, and their children, Dan, 23, and Clare, 18, milk 80 cows on their dairy near Cologne, Minn.

“It was an honor,” Paul said.

Sue agreed.

“It was humbling to receive this and know people thought we’re doing something good,” she said.

With the church literally in their backyard, the Stuewes are respectful to their close neighbors when it comes to completing tasks on their farm.

“We don’t empty our lagoon on weekends when they tend to have weddings or whenever they have funerals,” Sue said. “We try to plan around their schedule as best we can. It’s a respect thing.”

Sue is nishing her second term on the Carver County American Dairy Association and is also involved on the Dairy Day Dinner committee.

Outside of the dairy industry, Sue helps with church functions, volunteers at Stiftungs Fest in Norwood Young America, and was also involved with school events when her children attended.

“I helped with the post-prom party and different band events,” she said. “It was fun.”

Even Dan has taken an active role in the community.

He bowls in the same bowling league as his dad, just on a different team. He also volunteers at church and

at dairy association events.

During high school football season, Dan can be found on the sidelines serving as the assistant coach for the high school varsity team and coach for the junior varsity team.

“I enjoy it because I played in high school and at Ridgewater College,” Dan said.

He even takes time out of his busy schedule to do relief milking and eldwork for a few neighbors.

“It’s what I like to do,” Dan said.

“It makes our life more interesting,” Sue said. “It gets us off the farm since we don’t do any family vacations. Plus, there are so many people who don’t understand where their food comes from, so it’s a great opportunity for us to inform them about what we do.”

Although they are active in their community, dairy farming is their livelihood, and they work like a well-oiled machine.

“We’re a team,” Paul said.

When it comes to completing chores, Paul takes care of the milking.

While Paul milks, Dan takes care of feeding the cows, paying particular attention to nutrition, and doing any maintenance work. But Dan and Paul work together on breeding the cows.

Sue’s responsibilities revolve around feeding calves, helping Paul milk and driving tractor when needed.

“I do a little bit of everything,” she said.

The cows are housed in a freestall barn consisting of mattress stalls bedded with sawdust and are milked in a swing-8 parabone parlor twice a day that the family built in 2002.

“We were milking in a tiestall barn with 50 cows before,” Paul said. “This change made life so much easier.”

Along with building a new barn, the family also implemented a TMR mixer.

“It made things less labor intensive,” Sue said.

Although they only had 50 cows, they built their new freestall barn to hold 120 cows.

“We still have room to expand,” Paul said.

With the new barn in place, the

Stuewes remodeled the old barn to hold maternity pens, sick pens, a palpation rail and a holding area for the parlor.

Besides making life easier, the transition also had a positive effect on the cows.

“They’re much more comfortable and healthy, and we saw an increase in

production,” Paul said.

When they are not busy with their cows, Paul, Sue and Dan farm 170 acres of corn and 140 acres of alfalfa.

“Most is fed to the cows,” Sue said.

The Stuewes’ farm has been in the family since the 1920s when Paul’s grandfather, Robert Stuewe, purchased the land.

When Paul’s father, Robert Jr., nished his service in World War II, he came home and took over the farm. Paul grew up on the farm and went to college for two years at the University of Minnesota-Waseca before returning to the farm in 1981.

“We get along really well and the camaraderie between us is nice. That isn’t going to change. We’re just enjoying doing what we do and working together as a family.”

“I always enjoyed being outside and being my own boss,” Paul said about why he came back to dairy.

After 10 years of farming with his father, Paul and Sue took over in 1991.

After growing up on the farm, Dan pursued a dairy management degree at Ridgewater College and returned full-time in 2014.

“I love being with the cows and out in the eld,” Dan said.

For Paul, seeing his son come back to dairy farm is something he is proud of.

“It feels pretty darn good,” Paul said. “He’s easy to work with.”

Since returning to the farm, Dan is in the process of slowly taking over. But until then, the Stuewes have one goal for their farm.

“We want to get our cow numbers up to 120, which is what the barn can hold,” Paul said.

Receiving the Carver County Farm Family of the Year Award was an afrmation of their progress and will continue to work towards their goals.

“We’re going to keep doing what we do,” Dan

said.

Sue agreed.

“We get along really well and the camaraderie between us is nice. That isn’t going to change,” she said.

“We’re just enjoying doing what we do and working together as a family.”

Farm safety: Making it a daily habit Unfortunately, those of us working in agriculture often become complacent in our daily safety habits and focus more on task accomplishment, instead of safety. This harvest, SDSU Extension staff reminds producers across the state to slow down and put safety rst.

“We know that agriculture ranks as one of the most dangerous occupations causing an estimated 167 lost-worktime injuries on a daily basis – and for many in agriculture, fall is the one of the busiest times of year,” explained Tracey Erickson, SDSU Dairy Field Specialist.

She added that according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), of the injuries which occur each day on farms and ranches across the U.S. 5 percent result in permanent impairment. In addition, approximately 20 farm workers per 100,000 die annually, with the leading cause of these deaths being tractor overturns.

“It is so important to take time to train all employees on how to perform on-farm/ranch tasks safely,” Erickson said. “Make sure to address incorrect performance immediately by showing and telling them how to perform a job correctly.”

Below, Erickson outlines some basic tips to help increase safety this harvest.

Farm safety tips • Follow operating, maintenance and safety instructions in your operator’s manual. Review them periodically.

• Be personally t and ready for a safe day at the wheel.

Take occasional breaks to reduce fatigue.

• Dress appropriately for weather and working conditions, including personal protective gear such as a bump cap, gloves, safety shoes, ear plugs, respirators, and safety glasses.

• Make sure all equipment operators are well trained and competent.

• Do not allow extra riders on equipment.

• Keep all shielding in place and considering purchasing a roll-over protection system (ROPS) if the tractor is not already equipped with a ROPS or cab. Make certain hydraulic lines are properly connected and leak free.

• Stop the power before unclogging or xing a powerdriven machine.

• Match ground speed to operating conditions. Watch where you are going. Avoid obstacles, ditches and steep slopes.

• Watch for overhead power lines.

• When on the road, use your ashing lights. Make sure the slow-moving vehicle emblem is clean and visible. Obey all trafc rules. This includes not texting or using your personal smart phone for emailing or using apps, while driving equipment down roads.

• Take the time to transport large equipment down public roads in an appropriate manner.

• Turn off the engine before refueling. Do not smoke around hazardous chemicals.

• When parking, set brakes, shift into “park” or “neutral”.

• Make sure there is a working re extinguisher and rst aid kit on your operating equipment and that all employees know where they are and how to access or operate.

• Before emptying manure pits make sure it has been well ventilated and that you use a respirator to avoid exposure to toxic gases, wear a harness and have one person outside the pit who is able to summon help if necessary.

• Lastly, and most importantly, watch out for the children on the farm yard. Make sure they understand not to play around equipment or facilities. In addition, we should also make an extra effort to know where they are at on the farm at all times.

Dairy product supplies are plentiful in U.S. The Agriculture Department’s August Cold Storage report pegs butter stocks at 322.2 million pounds, down 10.6 million pounds or 3 percent from July but a whopping 110 million pounds or 52 percent more than August 2015.

American type cheese, at 744.5 million pounds, was down 25.2 million pounds or 3 percent from July but 35.5 million pounds or 5 percent above a year ago. The total cheese inventory stood at 1.24 billion pounds on August 31, down 32.5 million pounds or 3 percent from July but 108.2 million pounds or 6 percent more than a year ago.

HighGround Dairy’s Eric Meyer says “There is no earth-shattering news in this month’s release of the Cold Storage report that would have a signicant impact on market direction but rather an afrmation of the events that took place last month.

HighGround still expects that heavy stocks, questionable demand, and a solid milk production outlook will weigh on US cheese and butter markets in the coming months. That said, seasonal demand and perhaps an overdone cheese market (down too quickly over past ve weeks) could create some friction in the markets causing a temporary bounce.

But once holiday demand is satised, HighGround believes a bearish trend will remain for both markets into early 2017” Meyer says “There is not much excitement when analyzing butter inventories for market bulls; they could point to a slight downward revision to July’s ending stocks as a reason to smile. However, with over 322 million pounds in stock, the United States is ush with butter; 100 million pounds more than last August and the slowest drawdown from July (on a percentage basis) since 2009.”

Looking to cheese, Meyer says the August data “paints a slightly better picture when looking at seasonal drawdowns. But overall, the US still has plenty of cheese in storage. Last year, both Natural American and Total cheese categories saw an uncharacteristic increase in inventories from July to August, so a stronger-than-average 3.3 percent drawdown (down 25 million pounds versus 20102014 average down 14 million pounds) in Natural American stocks this year could be construed as somewhat bullish versus expectations.”

“HighGround’s view is that Cheddar production likely remained under pressure in August which helped justify prices peaking in the upper $1.80s during the week ending August 19, also drawing stocks lower than expected. Still, the fact remains that cheese inventories remain robust.”

“True, year-over-year gains have fallen from double digits seen on Natural American just last month,” HighGround says, “but it reminds readers that cheese stocks remained extremely at from last August through the remainder of 2015 at extraordinary levels. Versus two years ago, total cheese stocks are up 201.7 million pounds, or up 19.4 percent.”

Inventories remain robust and HighGround concludes that “stronger domestic production and weaker demand has the potential to draw prices down further once Fourth Quarter demand is satised.”

The index is based on the current milk price in relationship to feed prices for a dairy ration of 51 percent corn, 8 percent soybeans and 41 percent alfalfa hay; in other words, one pound of milk today purchases 2.42 pounds of dairy feed containing that blend.

The August U.S. average All-Milk price was $17.10 per hundredweight (cwt.), up $1.00 from July and 40 cents above August 2015. California’s All Milk average of $15.96, was up $1.02 from July and 73 cents above a year ago, while Wisconsin’s, at $18.00, was up $1.40 from July and 40 cents above a year ago.

August corn averaged $3.21 per bushel, down 39 cents from July and 47 cents per bushel below August 2015. Soybeans averaged $9.93 per bushel, down 27 cents from July, but 22 cents per bushel above August 2015. Alfalfa hay averaged $138 per ton, down $2 from July, and $23 per ton below August 2015.

Looking at the cow side of the ledger; the report shows the August cull price for beef and dairy combined averaged $80.60 per cwt., down 90 cents from July, $29.40 per cwt. below August 2015, but $9.00 above the 2011 base average of $71.60 per cwt.

The Daily Dairy Report says “The dairy Margin Protection Program (MPP) margin for the July-August 2016 period is $8.43, up $2.66 per cwt. from the prior two-month period, and exceeds the maximum MPP coverage of $8 per cwt.”

Checking the milk supply; “There was no uniform national trend for milk production the week of September 19, according to DMN. “Seasonal and weather factors are in play and production is mostly at to marginally lower in the Northeast and Mid -Atlantic states.”

“Southeast, North Central and Pacic Northwest states have steady farm milk output. Arizona has steady to slightly higher milk output.

South Central milk production bobbled following rainstorms and is lower in Florida, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Idaho. California has experienced higher farm milk intakes as well as increased improvements in milk protein and butterfat components following cooler temperatures,” DMN reports.

“Midwest spot milk demand is active, with prices ranging from $1.25-$3.00 over class. Transportation and pricing factors are stalling some spot milk sales. Central cream is tighter due to a new churning operation making bulk butter, rather than selling cream. Cream volumes are more available in the West.”

FC Stone’s Dave Kurzawski reports that, for the week ending September 17, dairy cow slaughter under federal inspection was down 6.02 percent, at 56,200 head, compared with the same period the previous year. Year-to-date slaughter levels are 1.6 percent lower than 2015 levels, with 2,079,700 head slaughtered.

Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) continues to move product offshore, accepting 13 requests for export assistance this week from Dairy Farmers of America, Northwest Dairy Association/ Darigold and Tillamook County Creamery Association. Cash 40-pound block Cheddar cheese closed the following Friday at $1.5325 per pound, down 2 3/4-cents on the week, lowest level since June 27, 2016, and 21 1/2-cents below that week a year ago when they jumped 15 3/4-cents. The 500-pound Cheddar barrels, after dipping to $1.46 Tuesday, rallied to close Friday at $1.51, unchanged on the week but 10 3/4-cents below a year ago, with 24 cars of block trading hands on the week at the CME and 40 of barrel.

Midwest cheese production is steady, according to Dairy Market News (DMN). “Milk intakes are relatively balanced and many manufacturers are running near full production schedules. A few processors are looking for additional loads of milk to round out production, but spot loads are a little less available for discounted prices. Retail and food service cheese orders are strong and have been building a little into the end of the year. All varieties of natural cheese have good demand.”

Western cheese makers are not having any problems getting enough milk for the vats. DMN says “Cheese production is active and often running near full capacity. Retail and food service demand is rm. Industry contacts still report long inventories, but processors are turning the stocks.”

Cash butter closed Friday at $1.8975 per pound, down 13 cents on the week and the lowest spot price since July 22, 2014. That is 60 1/4-cents below a year ago when it plunged 63 1/2-cents after jumping 41 3/4-cents the previous week. Eight cars were sold this week at the CME. Central region cream supplies continue to be more available for churning according to DMN. “Consequently, butter production is ongoing and many processors are running near to full capacity.

Bulk inventories are trending lower, but print butter supplies are building. Demands from many retail channels are strong,” says DMN. Western butter makers continue to try to balance production and supplies held in inventory. “Cream is readily available for processing and some butter makers are using the opportunity to churn butter and keep up with current and Fourth Quarter butter needs. Inventories are still well above previous years and manufacturers expect the seasonal, end of year demand will help draw stocks down,” says DMN. Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk climbed to 95 1/4-cents per pound Tuesday but then back tracked and ended the week at 92 3/4-cents, down three-quarter cents from the previous week but 3 1/4-cents above a year ago, with six cars exchanging hands on the week.

Speaking of powder; the Chicago Mercantile Exchange announced a historic change this week in the way physical dairy products will be traded. Beginning December 5, all spot nonfat dry milk will trade electronically on the CME Direct platform.

Butter and cheese will join the powder by the end of First Quarter 2017.

A higher All-Milk price and lower feed costs again pushed the latest milk feed price ratio higher.

The August ratio is 2.42, up from 2.14 in July and compares to 2.10 in August 2015, according to the Agriculture Department’s latest Ag Prices report.

The product has been contracted for delivery through December and puts CWT’s 2016 exports at 38.15 million pounds of American-type cheeses, 7.49 million pounds of butter (82 percent milkfat) and 21.3 million pounds of whole milk powder to 21 countries on ve continents. The sales are the equivalent of 676.17 million pounds of milk on a milkfat basis with totals adjusted for cancellations.

The European Commission is attempting to get a handle on milk production. The September 27 Daily Dairy Report (DDR) says that the EC has set aside €150 million to dole out to the more than 52,000 dairy producers who enrolled in its milk production reduction scheme.

“Producers from 27 countries pledged to reduce milk output by 1.06 million metric tons, or 2.33 billion pounds, in the next three months compared to the fourth quarter of last year,” the DDR says. “To qualify, producers must reduce output by at least 1,500 kg, and payments are capped at a 50 percent drop in milk production.”

“The average producer has pledged to reduce milk output by 16.9 percent. The Commission believes this will result in a 2.9 percent drop in milk collections in the fourth quarter compared to the same period in 2015,” according to the DDR. The week of September 19 marked the oneyear anniversary of the start of the USDA-led Federal Milk Marketing Order Hearing in California.

Annie AcMoody, Director of Economic Analysis for Western United Dairymen, wrote in her September 23 member newsletter that “It would be nice to celebrate the event with actual results to contemplate, but all we are left with at the moment are the memories we acquired there. Whether those memories will go down as good or bad ones will likely depend on USDA’s proposed order for California.”

She admits that “The federal agency did warn us that it would take a while, but this long? Maybe not everybody expected that. But the key thing to remember is that USDA is not avoiding us nor did they forget about California.”

The next step, she says, will be for USDA to release a recommended decision, which the public will be invited to comment on. “A period of 2-3 months is then expected for public comments. The agency will then take time to review those comments and issue a nal decision. Then producers in the affected market (California only, unless some neighboring counties are included) will get to vote on it. If 2/3 of the producers, or producers representing 2/3 of the milk participating in the voting process vote yes, then a nal order is issued.”

During today’s trading event 173, the GDT price index fell 3% relative to the prior auction, with all products, except buttermilk powder, declining in value. The news of the auction’s lower performance likely caused CME dairy product futures to turn red and remain that way into the close. Whole milk powder (WMP) and skim milk powder (SMP) accounted for more than 70% of the total volume traded today, and the price indices dropped 3.8% and 3.9%, relatively. SMP prices fell across all contract periods, with 2017 deliveries feeling the brunt of the declines. WMP performance

Exports of nonfat dry milk/skim milk powder (NDM/SMP) and dry whey were impressive in August, according to the latest trade data released by USDA today. At 52,612 metric tons (MT), or 116 million pounds, U.S. NDM/ SMP exports topped last year by 23% and were 9.7% higher than July as sales to Mexico improved. Through August 2016, NDM exports tallied 778 million pounds (adjusted for Leap Day), down 4% vs. last year. August dry whey exports surged to 20,462 MT, or 45.1

for the next delivery period (January 2017) buckled, falling 8.9% relative to the prior auction, reÁecting the largest auction-to-auction decline for WMP. The GDT fat complex had been performing well but was unable to shake today’s negative sentiment. Today marked the Àrst decline for anhydrous milkfat (AMF) since May 3, breaking a price run over nine consecutive auctions. Butter fared far better, easing 0.3% vs. the previous event. Nearby butter deliveries, Contract 1 and 2, increased 7.2% and 5.7%, respectively. However, a lower performance across all 2017 delivery periods dragged the butter index lower. GDT Cheddar cheese fell 2.3% relative to the prior event, marking the Àrst decline since July 19.

Contract 1 and Contract 4 both increased in value. Contract 2 (December 2016) dropped 7.6%. Winning prices for cheese ranged from a low of $3,359/metric ton for December 2016 deliveries to a high of $3,975 for November.

U.S. per-capita dairy product consumption soared nearly 13 lbs. in 2015 as Americans ate more cheese, butter, and ice cream.

Butter consumption continues to steadily increase. Annual per-capita butter consumption increased from 4.5 lbs. in 2005 to 5.6 lbs. in 2015. The outlook for butter consumption is positive. Ice cream consumption improved in 2015 after several years of back-to-back annual declines. Per-capita consumption of regular ice cream increased 3% to 13.1 lbs., but it is still nearly 3 lbs. less than in 2000. Fluid milk consumption continues disappoint. At 155 lbs. per person, Americans drank 92 lbs. (about 10.5 gallons) less milk in 2015 than in 1975.

Fortunately, increased consumption of other dairy products has lifted annual per capita dairy product consumption from 539 lbs. in 1975 to 627 lbs. in 2015.

China. Trade to China at 9,308 MT, or 20.5 million pounds, bested the prior month by 33% and last year by 333%. Despite recent gains in dry whey exports, year-overyear trade through August 2016 was 8 percent lower at 262 million pounds. Cheese and butterfat exports were lackluster in August due to domestic prices that were at a premium to global markets.

August cheese exports totaled 22,710 MT, or 50 million pounds, down 5.3% from July but up a scant 0.1% vs. the prior year. Butter and milkfat exports from the United States remained paltry in August. At 981 MT, or 2.2 million pounds, U.S. butter and milkfat exports were 24% less than the prior month and 59% lower than in August 2015. As Q4 begins, U.S. cheese and butter are more competitive in global markets; domestic prices have retreated by 30¢ per pound since August as Oceania and European prices have moved higher. As a result, U.S. exports are likely to trend higher and imports will likely diminish through the end of the year and into 2017. Production of butter, cheese, and NDM/SMP seasonally declined in August, according to USDA’s Dairy Products report released this afternoon.

However, August output of butter and cheese surpassed last year’s level by 0.7% and 1.2%, respectively. Combined NDM/SMP production at 162.8 million pounds was 0.2% less than last year. Manufacturers’ stocks of NDM fell 8.6% to 234.7 million pounds in August but remain 1.5% higher than last year. National Dairy Products Sales Report (NDPSR) prices for the week ending Oct. 1 were mixed.

Three times the dairy Hall family manages 1,400 cows in Vermont

EAST MONTPELIER, Vt. – While a lot of farmers across the country haul manure on their elds year round, the Halls with Fairmont Farms do not have that luxury.

“We’re under a manure-spreading ban from Dec. 15 to April 15 each year,” said Ricky Hall. “Vermont is on the forefront of a lot of environmental things. It can get complicated.”

Ricky Hall, his wife, Elizabeth, his parents, Richard and Bonnie, his sister, Clara Ayer, and his cousin, Tucker Purchase, milk 1,400 cows on three different farms – a 900-cow dairy and a 60-cow dairy near East Montpelier, Vt., and a 480-cow dairy near Craftsbury, Vt. The Halls have managed their manure applications around the ban for the last 21 years.

“We built a satellite manure pit at the 60-cow farm near East Montpelier,” Hall said. “When the others are full during the winter, we truck it to the satellite pit.”

With two months left until the ban begins, the Halls are hauling manure on their 3,800 acres of land.

“We get ned if we don’t comply,” Hall said. “They really enforce it here.”

With their 3,800 acres of land, 1,600 acres is corn and 2,200 acres are in grass for hay and silage.

“We have some in an alfalfa mix,

but we don’t grow a lot of alfalfa around here because of our soils,” Hall said. “They’re pretty light with some clay mixed in there, too. It’s hard to grow alfalfa because of that. The grass works well for us.”

Most of the cut hay is put into

haylage while a small portion is baled.

The corn is all chopped for silage.

“All of the crops we grow goes to the cows,” Hall said.

The Halls, however, do not plant any other small grains.

“We buy all of our corn meal, soybean meal, brewers grain and whey for the rest of the ration,” Hall said.

The Halls’ crop rotation works well with the climate.

“It’s pretty similar to the Midwest, but we just have mountains around here,” Hall said.

According to Hall, the winters in Vermont are cold, but do not reach extreme temperatures very often.

“We can get four or ve days below zero and that’s cold for us,” Hall said.

Even though it is not as cold as the Midwest, Hall said they usually get a lot of snow.

Like the winter months, Vermont does not experience extremely high temperatures during the summer.

“We hardly ever see temperatures in the hundreds, but 60 to 70 percent humidity is not uncommon,” Hall said.

“It can get really humid here.”

Regardless of the temperature or time of year, the Halls work diligently to manage all three sites with their 1,400 cows and 13 Hispanic employees.

Fairmont Farms sells their milk to Agri Mark. Although the creamery is nearby, not too many equipment dealers are.

“We have three dairies in our county. Most of them are in the northern part of the state and in Addison County, near New York.”

Their 900-cow dairy near East Montpelier is the original farm from 1992.

On that site, cows are housed in a freestall barns with sand bedded stalls and are milked three times a day in a double-15 parlor.

“That farm has all of our late lactation, pregnant cows and cull cows and is managed by a gentleman who used to milk cows,” Hall said. “We check cows on both of the East Montpelier farms to see if they’re pregnant. If they are, we load them in a trailer and transfer them to the dairy in Craftsbury. We usually haul

about 30 cows each day.”

With both of the larger farms using sand for bedding, the Halls bring in new sand to the stalls as needed.

“We have land we just put sand on,” Hall said. “Every four months, we hire someone to come and screen the sand on site and haul it to the farm.”

Since they do ET and ushing year round, Hall said they handle 30 to 40 eggs during the slower months and up to 150 eggs during the show months of June through September.

“We’re working toward having all of our animals carry ET on their name,” Hall said.

Besides having three facilities, the Halls also host parties, weddings, tours and summer camps.

“My sister takes care of that, mostly,” Hall said.

This year, the Halls hosted 20 kids on the farm for two weeks for summer camp season.

“They’re from the surrounding area and get their own calf to work with and do several chores on the farm,” Hall said. “They get to experience what a day in the life of a farmer would be.”

Although hosting individuals is an extra responsibility, the Halls enjoy doing the task.

“We always try to reach out to the public and get the community involved in agriculture,” Hall said.

The family has talked about doing bottled milk, but is waiting to move forward on that.

But, after being on the family farm for the past four years, Hall is proud to be the third generation on the farm.

“I love working with the cows, especially the show cows and watching them develop,” he said. “I’m glad I get to keep this farm going with my family.”

“We house more of our high type and genomic cows there,” Hall said.

“We do a lot of in vitro fertilization (IVF), embryo transfer (ET) and ushing work with those cows.”

With three different dairies to run, each person in the family has a role in the operation.

Hall is the overall herdsman for the three sites; Richard is the crops manager; Tucker is the overall herd manager, and Clara oversees the calf barn and takes care of the nances and book work.

Wapsie Valley Creamery expansion will double capacity

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa – Change is nothing new at Wapsie Valley Creamery. In business since 1906, the milk processing company has weathered 11 decades of new products and technology.

The latest wave of change for the creamery, named for

the nickname of the Wapsipinicon River that ows nearby, is an expansion which includes a cheese making room and cheese production equipment. Scheduled to be complete in early 2017, Wapsie Valley Creamery will be able to almost double its output.

Now, the creamery processes approximately 1.5 million pounds of milk a day into

The project started eight years ago, Hill said, with a new milk receiving area and energy-efcient boiler. Three years ago, a new laboratory and locker room were constructed in the new section that wraps around the older ofce area.

Two years ago, the Nielsens invested in milk vats and an enclosed drain table system, Hill said. A room to house the mechanical equipment was also part of that phase of the project.

Another part of the project has Bob Hill Wapsie Valley Creamery already proven its worth. Hill said the dieselpowered electrical generator kicked into action Sept. 22 for a couple of days, due to a swarm of thunderstorms that swept across Buchanan County.

The latest segment of the multiyear project is the construction of a cheese production area. That’s where the USDA loan comes into play.

Wapsie Valley Creamery sources its milk from approximately 350 farms in Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. Hill said Illinois might soon be included on that list.

Today’s milk procurement area is much larger than it was in the creamery’s early years, when dairy farms were more numerous and milk was collected in cans. The business began as the Wapsie Valley Creamery and Produce Company with bottled milk, ice cream and butter. Those dairy products, plus eggs and vegetables, were delivered to homes and small grocery stores.

Clarence Nielsen was hired as the manager of the creamery in the 1920s, when that segment of the business was spun off from the produce end of things, Hill said.

Clarence bought the creamery in the 1950s, and three more generations of Nielsens have followed as owners. Wilbur, Clarence’s son, is in his early 90s, but still serves as a vice president. He’s at the ofce every morning to pick up the mail, said Hill.

Mark, Wilbur’s son, serves as the company president. Ryan, Mark’s son, is a vice president and is the fourth generation of Nielsens to help guide the company.

Just as the names and roles have changed, so have other aspects of Wapsie Valley Creamery. Milk bottling, along with making ice cream and butter, ceased during the 1950s.

Today, the creamery makes American, Italian and Swiss styles of cheese.

They include cheddar, Colby, Asiago, Fontina, Gorgonzola, mascarpone, mozzarella, Parmesan, Provolone, ricotone, ricotta, Romano, Monterey Jack, Emmentaler and Swiss, plus washed and granular curds.

The company continues to turn out milk, reduced-lactose and milk products, along with whey cream. Then there are its whey products – lactose, reverse osmosis concentrated whey and regular whey.

Wapsie Valley Creamery’s products are sold throughout the United States and into Asia, Hill said. Its whey products are used in nished products such as baked goods, candy, protein powders, baby formula and cream cheese based dips.

The company began fractionating – or breaking whey into its various components – during the early 1960s and

was one of the rst to do so, said Hill.

“Wilbur (Nielsen) actually led the way,” Hill said.

Before the creamery started fractionating its whey, it was fed to livestock, spread on elds or simply dumped.

“The best shing,” Hill said, “was next to a cheese plant where the whey went into the river.”

Don’t expect to nd Wapsie Valley Creamery cheese in grocery stores. All the cheese is sold in 640-pound blocks.

The customers of those blocks then cut or shred and repackage the cheese in smaller amounts. And, don’t expect to bite into a slice of the company’s cheese when you sink your teeth into a fast-food burger. Hill said the cheese used there is reprocessed and isn’t what the creamery makes.

You might recognize some of the names of companies that resell Wapsie Valley cheese. Walmart, Kroger, and Crystal Farms are among them.

Wapsie Valley isn’t the largest cheesemaker – not by a long shot. But Hill said its customers appreciate the company’s exibility. For example, if a buyer needs a few truckloads of Colby, Wapsie Valley can provide that, Hill said.

Besides changes in the way milk is processed, the way the raw product is brought in has changed. Hill said Wilbur tells of cans of cream being brought in by rail, well over half a century ago.

“One of the rst things they taught him,” said Hill, “is you stood back and reached forward to clip the wire holding the can lid on. The cream would kind of ferment in the can and the lid would blow off.”

It wasn’t long ago that Wapsie Valley Creamery stopped taking milk in cans. Hill said about 15 years ago, Amish farmers near Oelwein, Iowa, installed diesel generators and were able to cool milk in bulk tanks, so they no longer needed to use cans.

“Cans,” Hill said, “were getting very expensive. We had an old can washer and maintenance was fabricating because they didn’t even make parts for it anymore.”

Herd sizes have changed over the years. Hill said during the 29 years he has been with the creamery, they’ve grown from 25-75 cows to mostly 75200.

Being located west of Iowa’s main dairy belt in the northeastern part of the state, Wapsie Valley Creamery has to try to lower its hauling costs. The company has a reload facility near Epworth, Iowa.

Here, trucks with milk from farms transfer the milk into semi tankers that make the nal leg to the creamery in Independence. A contract milk hauler operates another reload facility near Postville, Iowa, Hill said.

Also to reduce hauling costs, the creamery trades several farm truck loads of milk per day with Meister Cheese of Muscoda, Wis. When faced with a milk shortfall, the creamery buys spot loads from Foremost Farms, Dairy Farmers of America and others.

Hill identied two factors which help Wapsie Valley Creamery stay competitive. One is employing four eld representatives and making their coverage areas relatively small.

“I think farmers like the fact that they can call a eld rep, and he’s going to be within distance to help with quality problems or check a bulk tank. I think service is a big thing,” Hill said.

“And,” he said, “We kind of cater to the smaller dairy farmer. I think those family-owned farms like the fact that we’re still a family-owned business.”

Will Wapsie Valley Creamery be around after another 110 years?

“That’s hard to say,” Hill said. “The world changes. We know we’re projecting out for at least the next 50 years.”

A day in the life of Howe Dairy

SHERMAN, S.D. – The nal day of September was hectic at Howe Dairy as family members focused their energies on corn harvest.

Brian Howe and his wife, Heather, and their family,operate Howe Dairy near Sherman, S.D. Brian and Heather’s son, Nathan, works full-time on the dairy.

He and his wife, Betsy, live on the Howe farmstead and have three children, Benton, 6, Bryce, 3, and Miles, one month.

Falls Crane and Hoist. He and his wife, Jenny, live on an acreage near the dairy and have two children, Kendra, 2, and Wyatt, six months. Ryan’s employer gives him time off each fall so he can help his family with harvest.

Brian and Heather’s daughter, Jill, and her husband, Mike Schwebach, also live on an acreage nearby and help whenever they can. Jill and Mike have two children, Brooklyn, 6, and Easton, 2.

Mike is a co-owner at Sioux Falls Auto Glass.

The Howes now milk 235 cows and raise all of their replacement animals. They farm enough land to supply feed for their dairy operation with some grain leftover to sell.

“We started on our soybean harvest a few days ago,” said Brian as he watched corn ow from the belly of a semitruck into an auger. “We ran into some green beans so we decided to switch over to corn for a few days.”

is 20- by 70-feet and can hold approximately 20,000 bushels.

“The corn is running at about 25 percent moisture, which is perfect for putting into the silo,” said Nathan, who was driving their grain trucks back and forth between the eld and the farmstead.

The Howes have put together a system which allows their silos to ll with utmost efciency. Corn is augured from trucks into a 1,000-bushel portable holding bin. This bin then feeds the grinder which processes the corn and pushes it up into the silo.

Brian kept an eye on the grain handling system as Nathan brought in load after load

of corn. Brian stole a few minutes between loads to walk over to their freestall barn and use their skid steer to push feed to their milk cows. On his way back, he checked on the grinder to make sure everything was working as it should.

The Howe family have been good stewards of their land resulting with bountiful crops. Some of this year’s soybeans yielded over 70 bushels per acre. The eld of corn harvested on Sept. 30 was 255 bushels per acre, as reported

In the eld adjacent to the farmstead, Brian’s brother, Steve, was piloting a combine through rows of ripe corn while Ryan shadowed him with a tractor and grain cart.

“This is some of the best corn I’ve ever seen,” said Steve as he watched a river of golden grain gush into the cart.

At the edge of the corn eld near the Howes’ machine shed sits an item not commonly seen on a dairy farm: an F-89 Scorpion ghter jet.

“Our dad, Verlyn, joined the Air National Guard in 1948,” Brian said. “He served in the South Dakota Air National Guard from the mid1950s until the early 1970s.

This particular F-89 is the one he ew. When we were kids, he would sometimes buzz our farm with it. It was very loud

and an awesome thing to see.”

When the F-89 was retired, it was stripped of its engines, weapon systems and avionics and donated to the city of Sioux Falls. The F-89 then sat in Dennis the Menace Park before being sold to a collector in Canton, S.D. “Dad’s F-89 was put up for sale when the collector passed away,” Brian said.

“Dad couldn’t bear to see it being turned into scrap, so he purchased it and hauled it to his acreage. After Dad passed away in 2013, we decided to move it to our farm and display it near our machine shed. We did this to honor Dad’s memory and to keep the legacy of his service alive. The jet is now a fun place for our grandkids to play. And not everyone can say they have a ghter jet on their Turn to HOWES | Page 23

Brandon Mack, a grain buyer with Eastern Farmer’s Co-op in Jasper, Minn., stopped by with a late-day

snack. He chatted for a few minutes with Nathan and Brian about crop prices and yields.

“We’ve had an outstanding growing season for all of our crops,” Brian said. “We were able to take ve cuttings of alfalfa this year. We started cutting on May 18 and stuck to the schedule of cutting every 21to 25 days. We have the ability to either chop the hay or bale it, depending on conditions.”

Nathan has his set job on the farm.

“Running the silage chopper is one of my favorite things to do,” said Nathan, who does a bit of custom chopping for a few of their neighbors.

The days at Howe Dairy begin with the morning milking at 5, but seldom end with the evening milking, which starts at 4:30.

“There were a few days when we were harvesting soybeans that we kept going until midnight,” Brian said. “I’d like to get a little more sleep than that. It looks like we will have this second silo lled by 10 this evening. That won’t be too bad. We’ll start back in on the beans again tomorrow; there’s bound to be some that will be ready to go.”

And so it went on another bustling day of autumn harvest at Howe Dairy.

U of M repeats as national champions in Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging contest

The University of Minnesota’s dairy cattle judging team placed rst overall in the national intercollegiate contest for a second year in a row on October 3 at World Dairy Expo, Madison, Wis. The Minnesota team was also rst in Ayrshire, second in Holstein, second in Red & White, and fourth in Milking Shorthorn. Furthermore, team members place second overall in oral reasons with all four team members among the top eight individually.

University of Minnesota team members were Dane Thompson, Turtle Lake, Wis.; Crystal Siemers-Peterman, Cleveland, Wis.; Ethan Dado, Amery, Wis.; and Gabriella Sorg, Hastings, Minn. Individually, Thompson was second overall, seventh in reasons, second in Guernsey, second in Holstein, and fth in Ayrshire. Siemers-Peterman was 11th overall, fourth in reasons, third in Ayrshire, and third in Red & White.

Dado was 15th overall, eighth in reasons, and fourth in Ayrshire, and Sorg was 16th overall, sixth in reasons, rst in Holstein, and fourth in Red & White.

Coaches for the University of Minnesota’s dairy cattle judging team were Dr. Les Hansen, Scott Ellinghuysen, Alicia Thurk, and Eric Houdek. Seventy-three 4-year collegiate students competed in the contest.

Dairy farmers hail report as a victory

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Despite claims by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Army Corps of Engineers that the highly controversial Clean Water Act allowed exceptions for farmers and ranchers, the American agricultural sector saw the act as yet another regulatory power grab by Washington.

The act, which was put forth in June of 2015, denes waters of the United States, or WOTUS, as bodies of water and wetlands with any sort of tributary.

lated as bodies of navigable water because they have the possibility of owing into a larger waterway or wetland, and farmers would have to apply for permits through the EPA and Corps before doing any sort of eld work on their land.

In January of this year, the Senate and House both passed a resolution of disapproval regarding the Clean Water Act, which would eventually be stayed

by the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.

On Sept. 20, the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works majority staff released a report condemning the EPA and Corps, and demanding immediate congressional intervention on the matter.

Ben Keller, who milks 130 cows near Deerbrook, Wis., in Langlade County, was grateful to see the report.

“I was not a fan of the rule,” Keller said. “I was very concerned with the scope of the rule and how much more red tape we as farmers were going to be forced to deal with.”

However, Keller was skeptical regarding whether congressional action would be taken or not.

“The EPA’s power needed to be reined in on this and other rules they have been creating at will,” Keller said.

“I don’t know if Congress will totally gut WOTUS [after] the committee report or if they are just playing politics.”

Even though dairy farmer Steve Mueller, who milks 60 cows near Brackett, Wis., hadn’t felt any of the rule’s effects, he still disagreed with the bureaucratic overreach displayed by the EPA and Corps.

Because of their farm’s hilly terrain, the Muellers work very closely with the Farm Service Agency and Natural Resource Conservation Service to make sure they’re in compliance with the best possible farming practices for their land.

“The one thing I would say is that it is surprising [how] someone or a group of people think that they need to be so heavy-handed over farmers and other stewards of the land,” Mueller said.

Mueller also expressed disdain toward government bureaucrats with no knowledge of agricultural practices.

“It’s also a sign of disrespect toward people like us whose families have been doing nothing but trying to preserve the land for over 100 years, then to be told by bureaucrats that do not have any exTurn to WOTUS | Page 29

The 38-page report claims that, despite making exemptions for disking, plowing and changing crops, the EPA has not observed them. In addition, despite claiming man-made ditches and canals are of no interest to the EPA or Corps, they ultimately have the authority to name ephemeral bodies of water as wetlands or tributaries.

ponds don’t face regulation, which has been overstepped. In 2012, a Wyoming rancher built a dam to create a stock pond for his cattle.

The pond included a spillway to let as much water leave as was coming into it, and habitat for wildlife soon came to surround the pond. For this reason, the EPA wouldn’t exempt the stock pond because they reported the pond as too aesthetic.

In direct contradiction of their claims that changing crops from year to year was another exception to the rule for farmers and ranchers, the report also

detailed a case study where the EPA and Corps did what they said they wouldn’t under the Clean Water Act. In a case study from 2015, the Corps told a farmer they could take action against the farm operation for switching from alfalfa to orchards if there was a slight possibility that plowing the alfalfa under for planting trees could create discharge to wetlands.

A regulator with the Corps told the farmer that, because orchards had never been planted on the acreage before, it wasn’t the same kind of farming and may not be considered a normal farming activity.

Jim Holte, president of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation, has been an outspoken opponent of the rule.

“This [act] has been tied up in court and we are very likely going to be ghting this for the next several years,” Holte said. “This was created by people in Washington who have never set foot on a farm in their lives, and are trying to control your ground and mine.”

The committee report stated, “if Congress does not act, the newly won ability to challenge Corps jurisdictional determinations and claim exemptions will be moot because the WOTUS rule establishes jurisdictions by rule that will extend to all of the activities described in the case studies.”

U.S. Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, who has been critical of the act in the past, could not be reached for comment as of press time.

Our soybeans are more than one week off. They all have their yellow leaves.

We took out 125 acres of earlage on Friday and Saturday (Sept. 30-Oct.1) then covered the bunker on Sunday. We need to do 40-50 acres, but the corn is not ready. It’s about 35 percent moisture. We baled 75 acres of corn stalks and made 240 bales. We had to rake it twice. We are wet and fighting the mud in our area; 90 percent of the soybeans in the area are in the field. Twenty miles east of here on the sand they are combining corn.

We’ve been combining soybeans the last four days.

My organic soybeans are running 65 bushels per acre, and my dad’s conventional soybeans are running in the mid-70s. It’s the best soybean crop we’ve ever had. Everybody around here has been saying that. The corn is getting close. Some are combining and the moisture is 17-22 percent on 95-day corn. We did some hay yesterday (Oct. 4) and round baled it. The fields are a little wet, but we can go everywhere we want in the fields. We hauled a little manure yesterday as well.

We are 60 percent done with soybeans. We worked until 3 a.m., and started again at 4:30 a.m. Oct. 5. They are running in the middle RAINFALL 60s for bushels and are at 11 percent moisture. It’s the TOTALS Last 2 best crop we’ve ever had.

We started beans about Oct. 2, and the moisture is between 11 and 14 percent.

The yield is awesome, and the quality was fantastic so we are happy. We aren’t doing any high moisture corn but we will be getting into dry corn as soon as we are done with our beans. The weather has been good here for the last few days. We are pretty well dried out. Things are looking great as long as the weather can hold. We are done with hay crop for the year.

Over the last two weeks, we have been chopping corn and planting rye. We finished up chopping corn silage on the first and will be starting to combine beans in the next couple days depending on the weather.

There are a lot of farmers who have already started combining. Our corn silage yielded above average, but we didn’t weigh it to know an exact yield. A lot of guys are chopping, combining and a few have even started high moisture corn.

We also pumped out the lagoon and hauled the dry manure out of the lots. We’ve been getting up at 2:30 a.m. and going to bed at 9:30 p.m. to get the work done. It makes for a long day.

The soybeans are averaging 70 bushels per acre. I haven’t talked to anyone who was disappointed. It started raining Oct. 5, and after this, we are going to cut and chop fifth crop hay. Then, we are going to plant wheat into it.

I finished up the last bit of corn chopping on Tuesday, Oct. 4. The ground is very wet. I had to wait to finish the crop after filling the silo bags. We have some people starting to combine corn; I haven’t checked the acres I plan to do high moisture in, so I’m not quite sure how far out I am from starting. We didn’t have much rain in the last week, but two weeks ago we had 5.5 inches of rain fall in two-day’s time. My family, which lives closer to Hillsboro, had up to 7 inches of rain.

There was a lot of flooding on county roads and in some fields.

We are hauling manure right now.

All the corn has been chopped. We are deciding what we are going to do about winter rye; we haven’t planted any yet, but I think we will.

If we do plant winter rye, it will be planted where we chopped the corn. Corn silage was really good.

We harvested corn ranging from 12 to 15 feet tall. We totaled 27 ton per acre, so we are very fortunate with our corn crop this year. We will combine our corn, dry it if needed and use it for our dairy herd. Same with the beans; there are farmers who are starting to do corn and beans in the area, but we have not.

There is still fourth and fifth crop hay to be made in the county; farmers are struggling to get hay done for chopping or dried for baleage..

June mailbox prices perked up in most areas Wisconsin at $14.78, Minnesota $14.96, Iowa $14.51

MINNEAPOLIS – Mailbox milk prices for this past June perked up. In May, they were down in all but one reporting area. But one month later, June’s prices rose in 10 reporting areas, dropped in six and held steady in three, according to the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS).

Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa were all among the gainers. In America’s Dairyland, Wisconsin farmers averaged $14.78 per hundredweight for their May milk. That was a bump of seven cents from a month earlier, but $3.04 under the $17.82 price in June of 2015.

The June price also rose in Minnesota. In the Gopher State, the price nished at $14.96, up 25 cents from May. A year earlier, the Minnesota June average stood at $17.61.

Iowa followed the upward trend with a June average in the Hawkeye State that rose nine cents, to end at $14.51. A year earlier, it stood at $16.97.

Farmers in the New England States – Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont – saw the highest June mailbox price, $15.99. That was a two-cent blip upward from May. Florida saw the second-highest May mailbox price, $15.74. That was up 44

cents from May. The only other region to crack the $15 mark was the Appalachian States – Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Their June average came in at $15.07, up one penny from the month before.

New York dairymen received a June average of $14.69. That was an eightcent dip from the month before.

In eastern Pennsylvania, the average price was $14.70, down one dime from May. In the western part of the Keystone State, the May average ended at $14.62, up six cents from the month before.

Southeast dairymen in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi were paid an average of $14.62 for their June milk. That price was up 14 cents from May. In southern Missouri, the June price stayed the same as in May: $14.19.

Buckeye State farmers received an average of $14.86. Their Ohio average was up a nickel from May. One state to the west, in Indiana, Hoosier State dairymen averaged $14.66 for their June milk, down two cents from May. To the north, Michigan farmers averaged $12.90 for their June milk. That was the same price as one month earlier.

Moving southeast to Illinois, farmers in the Land of Lincoln took a nickel decline in June. The average price went from $14.62 in May to $14.57 in June.

The Corn Belt States – Kansas, Nebraska and northern Missouri – saw their average mailbox price stay steady at $13.62.

Mailbox prices are the actual, net amounts farmers see on the checks in their mailboxes. The AMS collects these prices through its federal milk order market administrator ofces. Mailbox prices include all payments farmers received for the milk they sold. These prices also reect all deductions associated with marketing the milk. There’s no adjustment to 3.5 percent butterfat, so mailbox prices reect the actual test of the milk.

and Washington averaged $14.47 in June, a slip of 33 cents from May. California, not a part of the federal milk marketing order system, saw a June average of $13.54, up from $12.58 in May. The lowest price among the federal milk marketing orders once again was paid in the Land of Enchantment. Farmers in New Mexico received an average price of $12.80 in May, down from $12.88 the month before.

Across all federal milk order areas, the June mailbox average was $14.43, down six cents from April and down $2.19 per from June of 2015.

People in the dairy community Mesko hired to lead MOSES John Mesko has been hired to head the Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service (MOSES), a nonprot in Spring Valley, Wis., that is nationally recognized for hosting the country’s largest annual organic farming conference. Mesko currently is the executive director of the Sustainable Farming Association (SFA) in Minnesota.

Mesko has a bachelor’s degree in agronomy and a master’s in farm management from Purdue University.

His unique career has spanned all facets of agriculture, from fertilizer sales and biotechnology research to leading a large network of sustainable farmers and starting his own farm. In each role, he has worked to promote a better understanding and appreciation of how food is produced.

Mesko and his wife, Lisa, have two daughters, Gabrielle and Sarah. The family raises grass-fed beef on a 160-acre farm in east central Minnesota. He also teaches a college-level environmental science class and regularly speaks about sustainability, farming and the future of agriculture.

Once onboard at MOSES, Mesko will lead a 10-member staff which provides training, resources, and practical advice to help farmers grow organically. In addition to the annual MOSES Organic Farming Conference, the staff organizes on-farm eld days, publishes a newspaper about organic practices, and offers a mentoring program and other services to help new organic farmers.

Carlson named Carver and Scott County Extension Educator Colleen Carlson has been selected to serve as the Carver and Scott County Extension Educator in Ag Production Systems by the Carver and Scott County Extension Committees.

Carlson will bring a wide range of talents to Carver and Scott County Extension. Colleen grew up on a diversied crop and livestock farm and currently lives on a small acreage where her family raises poultry, feeder cattle, and pigs. Colleen is a graduate of the University of Minnesota with a degree in Ag Education and also holds a degree from the University of Minnesota-Waseca in Ag Chemicals and Soils Technology. Carlson has worked in the Ag chemical industry, in education and for the University of Minnesota Extension Farm Information Line.

She most recently served as an interim Extension Educator in Carver and Scott Counties.

Carlson will be engaging in the counties water planning process, working with the Soil and Water Conservation Districts, and municipalities to determine educational needs on the topic of water quality. Carlson will also be participating with water quality related working groups with the University of Minnesota. At the local level, she will work with individual citizens and groups of citizens to determine practices that are effective and economically viable. Carlson believes it is not enough to simply provide information, but believes that citizens must understand the issues, their options, and what is at stake, in order to adopt practices that are in everyone’s best interest.

Carlson will be identifying local needs, implementing programs and providing technical assistance in the area of crop production, livestock, agricultural business management, and horticulture. Carlson looks forward to meeting the people of Carver and Scott Counties, collaborating with local businesses and moving forward on current county priorities and program planning.

Schossow receives Lely North America scholarship Chelsea Schossow, a Dairy Production major at South Dakota State University (SDSU) from Ridgeway, Minn., was one of ve students nationwide to receive a $1,000 2016 Future of Dairy Scholarship from Lely North America.

Schossow has worked on her family’s dairy and completed several internships in the agriculture industry. She was also active in 4-H and FFA for many years.

Schossow plans to pursue ruminant nutrition as a career.

To qualify for the scholarship, students had to be currently enrolled at an accredited junior college, college, university or graduate school in a program that will prepare them to contribute to the dairy industry. They also needed to be current or previous members of 4-H and/ or FFA. Each applicant submitted an essay responding to the question, “How will automated feeding and milking equipment impact the future of the dairy industry?”

Any trip to a supermarket or restaurant these days would suggest that many safe, effective, sciencebased and common practices in agriculture are on a collective collision course with expectations down the food chain about how food “ought” to be produced.

That clash is what led to the new federal law on the disclosure of GMOs in food products. The same pressures are being felt when it comes to how livestock are handled and housed, as companies move to source cage-free eggs and stallfree pigs.

If that weren’t enough, we also are facing another clash between how farmers strive to maintain healthy herds and ocks, and some consumers’ demands that

We in the dairy industry need to be proactive and vigilant about this issue, because despite our long and proud history of judicious antibiotic use in dairy, both regulatory pressures and marketplace demands threaten to restrict the tools available on the farm.

The spread of bacteria resistant to one or more antibiotics is clearly a public health concern. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the United States alone, at least 2 million people become infected annually with bacteria that are resistant to at least one antibiotic. An estimated 23,000 people die each year as a result. Health ofcials are concerned that new antibiotics are not being introduced as quickly as antibiotic-resistant germs are spreading – which represents another type of collision.

Just last month, the United Nations held a highlevel summit to nd new ways to battle the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Even though the science is at best unclear about the contribution played by farm antibiotic use, there was a clear international consensus at the New York meeting that reducing the use of antimicrobial drugs in agriculture should be a major public health goal to slow the spread of antibiotic-resistant germs.

That sentiment, which has been growing for some time, has already prompted changes in U.S. drug regulation. Starting three months from now, farmers will have to comply with new limits on how they feed antibiotics to their cattle, pigs and poultry. The use of medicated feed will need to be supervised by a veterinarian, who must write a prescription for a farmer to follow. And the use of any shared-class drugs (meaning antibiotics used in human as well as animal medicine) for growth promotion is no longer permitted.

For dairy farmers, the advent of this new Veteri-

nary Feed Directive will not have a major impact because of the way we use antimicrobials. Most of the current uses of antibiotics in dairy farming are therapeutic, meaning they treat or prevent a specic disease. They are not used to make animals grow faster or larger. The biggest impact will be felt by poultry producers, who are already scrambling to eschew any use of antibiotics because major foodservice brands are wanting to use the “no antibiotics ever” pledge for their offerings.

Such an expectation on the cattle side, however, would create a serious collision between what farmers know is best for the health of their animals, and what food marketers want to promote as an absence claim.

While chickens live relatively short lives before they are harvested, the life cycle for a dairy cow is much longer – measured in years, not weeks. At some point in their lives, many dairy animals – just like humans – will need antibiotic therapy to treat an infectious disease. Withholding that treatment could shorten the life of the animal, prolong its suffering, and possibly spread the disease further in the herd. The judicious use of antibiotics is always about weighing treatment options. But treatment is not optional if saving the life of a cow is the goal.

The dairy sector has an exemplary track record on the proper stewardship of antibiotics. Routine testing of every tanker load of milk, supported and enforced by the industry, state and federal authorities, helps eliminate the possibility of any antibiotic residues in retail dairy products. In the past ve years, the FDA has sampled more than 200,000 retail dairy products, and not one has tested positive for antibiotics.

To build on that record, NMPF’s National Dairy FARM program places a specic emphasis on ensuring that farmers have a relationship with a veterinarian, so that proper antibiotic use is supervised. NMPF recently cosponsored a day-long education session at a national veterinarian’s meeting to deepen the relationship between dairy farmers and their veterinary providers. And the FARM program offers a manual on how producers can avoid drug residues when they do use antibiotics.

Woven throughout all of NMPF and the dairy community’s efforts on this front is the notion that we must communicate with both customers and consumers all that’s being done. There is a real and understandable concern about the danger of antibiotic resistance. But that cannot, from an animal welfare perspective, mean that we eliminate the use of antibiotics to prevent and control disease. Rather, we must continue to communicate, collaborate, and explore new technologies that advance animal health and reduce the need for antibiotics.

A harvest meal I have been waiting one year to share this next recipe and story with you.

There is one dish all four of our kids request every fall. It all started with Jonathon’s special project of growing monster pumpkins. He was in grade school and wanted to see how big of pumpkins he could grow. The rst year, someone stole the large pumpkins out of the eld next to the road the night before we were going to pick them. The second year, we planted in a different spot and he succeeded in growing a pumpkin large enough to t over his head.

He cut a hole in the bottom of the pumpkin to t over his head and sit on his shoulders. He cleaned the cavity and cut out jack-o-lantern eyes and mouth and became the Headless Horseman for Halloween. He marched around the elementary school in the Halloween parade with his huge pumpkin on his head. It was such a hit that it became a tradition for the other kids to grow a pumpkin large enough to t over their heads and march around the school.

Since we were growing pumpkins every year for the Halloween costume, I needed to come up with things to do with all the pumpkin. I would cook several pumpkins at a time in the oven and then process them into freezer bags for use in pies and bars. Then I came across a recipe in my issue of Taste of Home that became the family favorite harvest dish.

At the end of a safe and bountiful harvest, I would cook up a harvest meal for our family and all of the helpers.

Pumpkin stew was the main dish and the main attraction at the table for this special meal. It was a simple meal of stew, rolls and pie but everyone pushed away from the table with full stomachs and deep sighs of content.

Don’t be afraid to make this pumpkin stew; it really is very easy. I’ve also included a couple of recipes from Kay

Food columnist, Natalie Schmitt Siewert of Zumbro Falls, Minn. Our kids went to college together and Michael raves about her cooking. She was kind enough to share with me some of their family favorites.

Pumpkin Stew 2 pounds beef stew meat, cut in to oneinch cubes 3 Tbsp. cooking oil, divided 1 cup water 3 large potatoes, peeled and cubed 4 medium carrots, sliced 1 large green pepper, diced 4 garlic cloves, minced 1 medium onion, chopped 2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. pepper 2 Tbsp. instant beef bouillon 1 can (14 oz.) tomatoes, undrained, cut up 1 pumpkin (10-12 pounds) In a Dutch oven, brown meat in two tablespoons of oil. Add water, potatoes, carrots, green pepper, garlic, onion, salt

and pepper. Cover and simmer for two hours. Stir in bouillon and tomatoes.

Prep the pumpkin: wash pumpkin; cut a six to eight inch circle around the top stem. Remove the top and set aside; discard seeds and loose bers from the inside. Place the pumpkin in a shallow, sturdy baking pan. Spoon the stew into the pumpkin and replace the top. Brush the outside of the pumpkin with the remaining oil. Bake at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for two hours or just until the pumpkin is tender. Do not overbake. Pumpkin will slump down and won’t hold the stew very well. Serve stew from the pumpkin, scooping out a little pumpkin with each serving.

Silky Pumpkin Pie 3 large eggs 1/2 cup sugar 1 (14 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk 1 1/2 cup cooked pumpkin puree (15 oz. can) 3 Tbsp. melted butter 1 Tbsp. our 1/2 tsp. each cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger 1/4 tsp. ground cloves 1 pie shell Whisk together eggs, sugar, sweetened condensed milk, pumpkin and butter until thoroughly combined. In a bowl, mix the dry ingredients. Stir into pumpkin mixture. Pour lling into the pie shell. Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 50-60 minutes until the pie is set around the edges and slightly loose in the center. Cool for one hour. Cover and chill. If there are any leftover pieces from supper, Mark will grab a slice of pumpkin pie in the morning as he heads out from milking.

Cheddar Ham Chowder from Kay Siewert 2 cups water 2 cups cubed peeled potatoes 1/2 cup sliced carrots 1/2 cup sliced celery 1/4 cup chopped onion 1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. pepper 1/4 cup butter 1/4 cup our 2 cups milk 2 cups (6 oz.) shredded cheddar cheese 1 can (16 oz.) whole kernel corn, drained 1 1/2 cup cubed fully cooked ham In a large saucepan, bring the water, potatoes, carrots, celery, onion, salt and pepper to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 10 minutes or until vegetables are just tender. Remove from heat, but do not drain. Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan, melt butter. Blend in our. Add milk, cook and stir until thickened and bubbly.

Add cheese and stir until melted. Stir into the vegetable pot, add corn and ham; heat through, stirring occasionally.

Pumpkin chocolate chip mufns from Kay Siewert 4 eggs 2 cups sugar 1 can (16 oz.) pumpkin 1 cup vegetable oil 3 cups our 2 tsp. baking soda 2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. salt 2 cups chocolate chips In a large mixing bowl, beat the eggs, sugar, pumpkin and oil until smooth.

Combine the our, soda, powder, cinnamon and salt; add to pumpkin mixture and mix well. Fold in chocolate chips.

Fill paper-lined mufn cups three-quarters full. Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 16-20 minutes, or until mufns test done. Remove from pans.

Sour Cream Banana Bread 1/3 cup wheat germ 1 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt 1 cup mashed bananas 1/2 cup sour cream

1 cup sugar 1/2 cup butter, softened 2 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla 1 1/3 cup flour

Preheat oven to 350 degrees; line a loaf pan with waxed paper. Cream sugar and butter. Add eggs and vanilla; beat well. Add flour, wheat germ, baking soda, salt and bananas. Start to mix, then add sour cream. Mix well. Pour into lined loaf pan. Bake 65 to 70 minutes until loaf tests done with toothpick. Let cool in pan for 15 minutes. Tip out onto wire rack; remove waxed paper. Let cool. Freezes well.

Popover Pizza 1 1/2 - 2 lbs. ground beef, browned and drained 1 cup chopped pepperoni 2 – 15 oz. cans or jars pizza sauce 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese 3 eggs 1 1/2 cups milk 3 Tbsp. vegetable oil 1 1/2 cups flour 1/2 tsp. salt Parmesan cheese

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Stir together ground beef, pepperoni, pizza sauce and 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese. Spoon into greased 9x13 pan.

Top with 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese. Beat eggs, milk and oil until bubbly. Beat in flour and salt until batter is smooth. Pour batter over meat mixture and cheese. Sprinkle with desired amount of Parmesan cheese. Top with rest of mozzarella cheese. Bake 30 minutes covered; 35 to 40 minutes uncovered or until top is nicely browned. When serving, flip over onto plate – hence the name, “Popover” Pizza.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease a 9x13 pan. Combine browned ground beef, dry onion, onion salt and pepper. Stir in peas. Add soup, milk, sour cream and 1 cup shredded cheese; stir to combine. Place half of tater tots (or crispy crowns) in pan, top with meat mixture, then remaining tots. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Bake 25 to 35 minutes, or until tots are cooked through and golden. Bake longer if tots (or crowns) are not thawed before hand.
