Combination aids in milk production, cow health

Alfalfa-grass mixtures are proving to be a benecial feed for dairy cows.

It is easy to digest, can help keep cows healthy and can boost milk production.

The forage mixture is gaining in popularity, particularly in northeastern United States where the number of alfalfa acres sown with grass is greater than 85 percent.

“The northeast has a lot of wet soil not suitable for growing alfalfa, but it’s good for growing grasses,” said Jerry Cherney, Cornell University professor.

“Alfalfa is king in the Midwest, but in the northeast, grass is king.”

Cherney spoke during the forage seminar, “New Insights on AlfalfaGrass Mixtures for Dairy”, Oct. 5 at World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis. The grass species most commonly planted with alfalfa is meadow fescue.

Found to be more palatable than orchard grass, meadow fescue has proven itself to be a productive and highquality grass.

“Research shows that feeding alfalfa-grass results in at least as much milk, if not more, as pure alfalfa, and offers benets to both animal and soil health,” Cherney said. “Cows eating alfalfa-grass are typically healthier and have fewer displaced abomasums.

Grass is good for the soil and plants, too, causing less erosion and trafc damage, fewer pests and disease and a longer stand life due to less winter-

kill.”

When interspersing grass with alfalfa, the ideal is to have 30 percent of the dry weight in a stand after harvest to be grass. To achieve this quantity, grass should be planted at one to two pounds of seed per acre along with a high-quality alfalfa planted at 12-14 pounds per acre.

“One of the downsides to alfalfagrass is getting and maintaining the 20-30 percent grass component,” Cherney said. “Grass grows fast, and the percentage of grass in a eld can increase rapidly.”

For example, festulolium grass planted in New York showed 2 percent grass during the seeding year, but two years later grass coverage was nearly 60 percent. Grass multiplies over time, therefore, the older the stand, the more grass will be present. More cuts also equal more grass.

“Some grasses are more aggressive than others,” Cherney said. “But grass should always be planted in moderation to offset vigorous growth. Latematuring grass varieties are best.”

Weather also plays a part in grass growth. Alfalfa matures based on growing degree days while grass matures according to daylight. The year 2017 was wet followed by a cold spring in 2018. Grass keeps growing in this type of weather, whereas alfalfa sits idle.

“The result is too much grass,” said Cherney, who shared data from this year’s harvest in New York in which weather caused differences in the amount of grass from spring to fall.

due to drought. The cold, wet weather favored grass, while the drier weather favored alfalfa.

Grass is more sensitive to the environment than alfalfa and varies in quality from region to region.

For example, in a study comparing the quality of meadow fescue, orchard grass and festulolium by region, meadow fescue was found to be much higher than the other grasses in ber digestibility in New York, but in Kentucky, it ranked the lowest in ber digestibility.

“Pick a grass that works for your area,” Cherney said.

Grass is high in protein and neutral detergent ber digestibility, making it a suitable companion to alfalfa.

“The NDFD of grass is much higher than that of alfalfa, giving you more bang for your buck,” Cherney said. “Even stands with just 5 percent grass will increase NDFD by 1 percent, which is signicant when it comes to alfalfa.”

In elds of HarvXtra® alfalfa, NDFD increases signicantly when more grass is added. However, adding an average grass to HarvXtra® or adding meadow fescue to an average alfalfa does not bring about as good of results as when these two highquality forages are combined.

States. Based on 2017 data from New York, the two forages as a mixture outperformed plain alfalfa and average grass. HarvXtra® was 5 percent higher in NDFD compared to other alfalfas, and meadow fescue was 10 percent higher than other grasses.

“Tetrax is a good variety of meadow fescue,” Cherney said. “It’s high in ber digestibility and low in grass percentage, which is a good thing. We only plant one pound per acre in New York because it’s so well adapted to the area. In the seeding year, we’ll usually see about 3 percent grass and 10 percent the following year.”

In terms of yield, alfalfa-grass almost always beats out alfalfa, at least in the northeast region of the United States. The dry matter yield for alfalfa-grass is 0.1-0.4 tons per acre higher for every 10 percent unit increase in grass percentage in a stand. Soil fertility is a factor in yield quantity. A heavily-manured eld will be on the higher end, whereas a eld with marginal fertility will be on the lower end. When eld fertility is high, crude protein is also high. But even a less fertile eld with 20-30 percent grass in a stand will still supply plenty of crude protein.

Can dairy farmers make more money feeding alfalfa-grass to their cows? Cherney said a 1,000-cow herd could stand to make an additional $100,000 by feeding a HarvXtra® and meadow fescue mixture.

This is based on 2017 data from New York that assumes 1 percent unit NDFD equals 0.5 pound of milk per cow per day with grass at 30 percent and milk priced at $17 per hundredweight.

“We know it works well in the northeast,” Cherney said of alfalfa-grass mixtures. “And, it’s proving to be a favorable forage option in the Midwest, as well.”

MDA grants available for livestock investments The AGRI Livestock Investment Grant program is now accepting applications. The grant encourages long-term industry development for Minnesota livestock farmers and ranchers by helping them improve, update, and modernize their livestock operation’s infrastructure and equipment. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) anticipates up to $2 million in competitively awarded grant awards. Funding for the grants was established through the Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation (AGRI) Program to advance Minnesota’s agricultural and renewable energy industries.

The grant is intended to promote economic growth as well as environmentally sound practices in Minnesota’s $7 billion livestock industry. The program encourages new farmers and generational transitions in order to sustain the livestock industry in the state.

“The Livestock Investment Grant will benet farmers and ranchers all over the state,” said Minnesota Department of Agriculture Assistant Commissioner Whitney Place. “Minnesota livestock producers are some of the most innovative in the country. The goal of these grants is to invest in that innovation by improving production facilities that can help sustain protability of the next generation of livestock producers.“ Livestock farmers with operations in Minnesota may apply for funding. What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am involved in 4-H and FFA. I am the president of my 4-H club, Little Valley Victors and the vice-president of my FFA chapter. I was also elected president of my 4-H club last year, vicepresident the year before and treasurer for my FFA chapter for the two previous years.

Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? I am involved in these activities to build my skill set and to connect with my community. I am becoming a leader and a more well-rounded character. I am a better public speaker and have learned to look outside of the box in every situation. These organizations have bettered my life and help me to look at everything with a positive attitude. I have built long lasting relationships with peers and employers that will strengthen my life in the future.

Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. This year when I presented a project on Syngenta Enogen corn and got to connect with businessmen and learn about agriculture that interests me. I loved going to meetings and presenting at the county and state fair levels.

Tell us some of your duties on the farm. I help milking cows, planting, hauling manure, harvesting, feeding calves, throwing tires on our corn silage pile, helping clean and organize the farm, along with anything else.

It all depends on the season of the year, what needs to be done and when I can make it work between all of my school activities and commitments.

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? The farm economy.

I would change it by taking money away from the wasteful and giving it to the ones who feed our world.

Tell us about your farm. I live on a dairy farm called Sunshine Acres. We have 225 head of milking cows and assorted farm animals. We raise 140 dairy steers. My siblings and I raise sheep, goats and dairy steers through the spring and summer to show at our county fair. We run 700 acres of crops as well, including corn, beans and alfalfa. Mechanic by day, musician by night Stadick follows grandpa as concertina player

NEW ULM, Minn. – When Nick Stadick is not helping on his parents’, Mike and Tammy Stadick’s, dairy farm, he can be found working at an area implement dealer or entertaining folks with his concertina.

Nick, 20, has been playing concertina since he was eight and made his rst public appearance at a bar one year later.

“It was at Trip’s Bar in New Ulm,” Nick said. “They actually put my name on a banner outside kind of as a joke.

My grandpa was playing there, and I played with him.”

The American Dairy Goat Association annual convention was held from Oct. 16-21 in Bloomington, Minn. The six-day event featured seminars, a vendor fair, soap making classes and networking opportunities.

Laura Keiser presented the rst seminar, How to Evaluate Forage Quality Using a Forage Test, Oct. 18.

“We should test our forage to know what we have, so we can make nutrient adjustments accordingly,” said Keiser, with Dairyland Labs.

A physical appraisal of forage can be biased and unreliable, Keiser said.

Instead, she advocates for chemical forage analysis and explained what that consists of.

“Chemical analyzes are needed to assess the economic potential of forage,” Keiser said. “It helps you utilize what you have, but make that the best you can.”

Keiser explained six factors that inuence forage quality: maturity, crop species, variety, soil fertility, environment, and harvest and storage.

to our own biases when conducting a physical appraisal, and asked the room what they look for when choosing forage. From color to weight to leaves, everyone had their own idea of what makes the best forage, proving Keiser’s point.

None of these qualities are the telltale of the overall quality of forage, Keiser said, and while we can use the physical appraisal as an indicator, we should rely on the chemistry.

Keiser said there is a machine that analyses high-quality samples of forage and uses them as a base to judge the quality of samples. It develops a spectrum to judge the samples with near infrared reectance analysis.

NIR analysis programs a computer to recognize individual nutrients in a feedstuff based upon the amount of light absorbed at each near infrared wavelength. Programming a computer to recognize these nutrients requires large databases of samples that have been scanned by an NIR instrument and analyzed by traditional wet chemistry or reference analyses.

The second seminar of the day was given by Elsie McCoy, manager of EZid in the United States, about microchipping regulations regarding the ADGA and United States Department of Agriculture.

Under USDA regulations, the microchip identication process is acceptable, but the ADGA requires tattoos as a primary identication method and accepts microchipping as a supplemental form of identication.

Microchips have been used in other species for many years with success, said McCoy. Under ADGA guidelines, microchipping is approved as supplemental identication if the primary identication is apparent but not fully readable and located in an approved site.

The numbers must match and comply with the 840-style USDA-approved microchip or eartag.

When considering microchipping

dairy goats, McCoy shared the benets of switching to the technology.

“This is a fast, permanent identication that is USDA approved, there’s virtually no ID loss compared to tags, it’s tamper proof, it automates with software and is error-free,” McCoy said.

EZid offers two microchip delivery systems – a single use disposable syringe or a reusable syringe, which requires sanitation after every use.

The chip must be located subcutaneously either on the underside of the tail or the base of the ear where the ear meets the head. This location must be documented with food safety inspection as well.

The room was full of ADGA members providing input on the new design of ADGA’s website, www. adga.org. Presented by Kellie Jones and Sara Dimenski, the women invited the room to discuss ADGA’s website and how the remodel should look for maximum navigation, ease and functionality.

“We have heard for years that it’s a hard website to navigate,” Jones said. “So, today we are asking for your help with what you would like to see online in the future.”

ADGA brought their website designer to the presentation to interact with those in attendance and answer technical questions.

Awareness of grain quality critical this harvest With the current forecast showing a stretch of dry weather for harvest across much of Wisconsin, the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection reminds farmers and elevators to closely evaluate the quality of their grain this fall.

“Because of the challenging conditions this growing season, there is an increased likelihood of damaged or moldy grain,” said DATCP Secretary Sheila Harsdorf. “If you suspect you may have a problem with your grain, consider having it tested prior to comingling or delivering it.”

If there is a question of quality, farmers are encouraged to contact their crop insurance agents to understand options and be aware of any testing or reporting obligations. Grain quality is also critical for farmers who are considering applying for interim nancing this fall. Lenders may require verication of quality before issuing loans.

Elevators should closely evaluate incoming grain and be upfront about their standards and what loads will be rejected. Elevators should have clear procedures in place for testing. If there are questions about grain quality between the farmer and the elevator, a third party test may be necessary.

With record or near record grain harvests expected to come in over the next several weeks and large amounts of grain already in storage, space may become an issue in Wisconsin. Elevators should understand requirements for storing grain. Farmers should make certain that their commercial storage facility is properly licensed. “This is a busy time,” added Harsdorf. “Taking precautions and time for communication between parties is key and will lead to a more successful harvest for all of us.”

Minnesota Farm & Rural Helpline available 24/7 The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) reminds farmers and their families that the Minnesota Farm & Rural Helpline is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The service is free and condential. The toll free number is (833) 600-2670.

“These are challenging times for growers who are facing a number of economic headwinds on the farm. And during harvest, that stress builds for a lot of farmers spending long hours in the combine,” said Minnesota Corn Growers Association President Brian Thalmann, who farms near Plato. “All farmers should know this number is available when outside help is needed.”

Farmers and rural communities face unique stresses and emotional situations, including nancial challenges, unpredictable weather, and physically demanding work. Stress, anxiety, depression, nancial burdens, and other mental and emotional challenges are common.

The Minnesota Farm & Rural Helpline connects callers to nancial help, mental health counselors, legal assistance, and more. Calls are condential, but counselors may ask for a rst name and phone number in case of a dropped call. Translation services are available in all languages.

The Helpline is also available to people who are worried about family or friends and aren’t sure how to help.

DAIRY CALENDAR Agricultural lenders will receive current useful, research-based information during the Siouxland Ag Lenders Seminar on Thursday, Nov. 1 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Triple Box near Orange City.
