Farming is tough, but so are you Voegtlen brings awareness to mental health

PORTAGE, Wis. – Growing up, Willow Voegtlen has always made philanthropy a part of her life due in part to circumstances she faced as a child, having had several surgeries for her heart and for a cleft palate.

“I spent a lot of time in the hospital when I was a child, from 1 to 3 years old,” Voegtlen said. “I came to cherish what doctors did for other people, giving them another chance at life. Ever since I’ve been in 4-H, every single year I’ve donated to a charity to a cause that I feel is important and believe in.”

Voegtlen, 21, grew up on the 500cow dairy farm her father worked at in Troy, Pa. Within that herd, her family has their 55-cow herd of Jerseys.

The young Pennsylvanian came to Wisconsin to take part in an internship at Budjon Farms in Lomira, Wis., and attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison Farm and Industry Short Course.

Following her time in school, Voegtlen worked as an assistant herdsman at Barlass Jerseys in Janesville, Wis. She continues to work at Barlass Jerseys in a part-time capacity and is a full-time livestock handler with ABS Global in DeForest, Wis. “I’ve donated roughly about $3,000 during my 4-H and FFA career from premiums and market animal sales,” Voegtlen said. “Most of that was donated to the Children’s Miracle Network. Now that I’ve aged out of 4-H and FFA, I wanted to continue that charity work, but I wanted a new idea.”

Voegtlen’s background and involvement in the dairy industry sparked an idea for a new direction for her philanthropic efforts.

“I realized there is a charity that really needs it and hits close to home,” Voegtlen said. “We have this increase of dairy farmer suicide rates. I didn’t know how to publically talk about it at rst, but I thought if I made a T-shirt with a statement on it that could maybe start the conversation.”

Voegtlen modied a favorite quotation to t her purpose.

“A quote that I’ve always tried to live by is, ‘Life is tough, darling, but so are you,’” Voegtlen said. “I just modied that to convey that even though farming is tough, particularly these days, so are we.”

“I only planned to sell 18 shirts, probably mostly to my family and a few friends,” Voegtlen said. “As of today (Oct. 20), I have sold 250 T-shirts and donated $1,812 to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.”

She has used Custom Ink LLC for her fundraiser. Those wishing to purchase the shirt simply go to the website, place their order and pay directly.

CustomInk takes care of turning the donated money to the AFSP. Approximately $5 from each purchased T-shirt is donated.

This approach allows Voegtlen to focus her time and efforts on promoting the fundraiser, and driving trafc and awareness to the website through social media campaigns.

“It started out kind of slow with a few orders trickling in,” Voegtlen said. “Then the Virginia Tech Dairy Club purchased over 20 shirts. It took off from there. Then Jessica Peters, a Pennsylvania dairy farmer, Jersey breeder and agvocate, shared it and it really started taking off.”

Voegtlen is not sure where her shirts have been sold, but she knows from social media feedback the shirts are on both the east and west coasts, and scattered throughout the Midwest.

Some have also been sold to Canada.

Voegtlen is opening up the fun-

draiser for a fourth time and is adding the options of long sleeve shirts and sweatshirts. This session will remain active through Oct. 31, and then Voegtlen will determine if and when to

reopen it again.

“I’ve increased my goal each time I’ve met it, going from 18 shirts to 50 then 100, and now I’ve reached 250 shirts sold,” Voegtlen said. “Now I’d like to raise $2,000.”

While the donated funds go to AFSP and are earmarked for the agricultural community’s needs, Voegtlen is considering starting a non-prot organization that would focus solely on agricultural mental health, citing the specic needs of the community.

“I’ve been thinking about trademarking my logo and opening a Facebook page for farmers that need encouragement and community,” Voegtlen said. “A place for them to share their stories and to talk openly about mental health and their needs.”

Voegtlen would like to see individuals wearing the shirts, taking photos and posting on social media using the hashtags #mentalhealthmonday, #dairystrong and #farmtough.

“There are so many ways that we can support mental health care as a community,” Voegtlen said. “Check in with your family, friends and neighbors often, offer help, don’t be afraid to talk to someone, and learn the symptoms of depression.”

Voegtlen also encourages those with concerns for themselves or others to contact the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255.

“It takes a great deal of courage to promote mental health in this delicate time,” Voegtlen said. “My mother has always told me that the only resolution to a problem is to raise awareness.”

Phinale matriarch of six living generations

Brewers’ 18-year-old cow makes mark at Glenn-Ann Holsteins

ALBANY, Wis. – One cow at Glenn-Ann Holsteins has aged gracefully, living through nearly ve presidential terms, nine Olympic games and 18 super bowls along with a special party thrown for her when she turned 15.

Born Sept. 3, 2001, Wilcoxview BC Phinale recently celebrated her 18th birthday at Glenn-Ann Holsteins in Albany, Wis. Reaching an age most cows never see, this Holstein spends her days grazing on a well-deserved piece of pasture known as the retirement village which she shares with her 10-year-old granddaughter, Phashion.

“Phinale is not a pet,” said Traci Brewer, one of Phinale’s owners. “She’s just part of the herd.”

Along with her age, this long-lived animal has accomplished another rare feat. For a brief time, seven generations of her lineage were alive at GlennAnn. The lineup included Phinale, Phantastic, Phashion, Phlair, Phlora, Phlower and Phorget Me Not. Phinale’s 13-year old daughter, Phantastic, an EX94 Goldwyn daughter, recently passed away, reducing the number of living generations to six.

Longevity runs in the family, as several members have lasted more than a decade.

Phinale last calved in 2014 and retired from milking May 13, 2017, after nine lactations.

She has given birth to six heifers and three bulls, and had three offspring through embryo transfer. A xture on the farm,

Phinale moves at her own pace but still gets around well.

“She’s become a little thinner in the last year or two but still has a big appetite and will push on the fence whenever she sees a feed tub headed her way,” Traci said.

Owned by the Brewer family, Glenn-Ann Holsteins is run

by Glenn and Joann Brewer and their children, Traci Brewer; Tami Behnke and her husband, Brian; and Tony Brewer. They milk around 80 cows twice a day in a tiestall barn and farm 700 acres.

Traci is the cow person, and Tony farms the land. Tami feeds calves morning and night, and Brian does the herd’s breeding and mating. In addition to their roles on the farm, Tami and Brian both work off the farm.

Brian is the business manager for ABS Global/St. Jacobs ABC in DeForest, Wis., and Tami is a tax assistant at Compeer Financial in Janesville, Wis. Tony and his wife, Nicole, who teaches kindergarten, have two children, Jaxson, 3, and Kinslee, 1.

The ve-time Excellent, Gold Medal Dam comes from the famous El-Dor Saber Pansy family and was the last calf born at Wilcox Farms in Roy, Wash., just days before the nal herd dispersal. Tami and Brian worked at Wilcox at the time and bought Phinale with Mike Deaver as a 6-day-old calf.

Sired by Boulet Charles, Phinale is the daughter of Lylehaven-Wood Sky Philo, an EX93 cow who was grand champion at the Western Fall National show as a 5-year-old and also nominated all-American.

Pansy, an EX-95 three-time allAmerican nominee for $33,000 at a sale in Vermont when she was nearly 9 years old. The following year, he bought one of her daughters, an 87-point 2-year-old, at a sale in Connecticut, along with three of her daughters – one of whom was Philo, a 9-month-old calf.

“We didn’t want to spell Phinale’s name the traditional way since her dam’s name started with the letter ‘P,’” Tami said. “It had to start with a ‘Ph’ rather than an ‘F.’” Phinale’s unconventional spelling has spurred a long list of names spelled in the same manner. Every animal in the family starts with a “Ph” or has “Ph” somewhere in its name.

In the spring of 2003, Phinale was placed in a consignment sale hosted by Mike Deaver and purchased by Glenn-Ann and Brian’s family, Bur-Wall Holsteins. In 2011, Glenn-Ann bought Bur-Wall’s share and became Phinale’s exclusive own-

er.

Phinale is scored EX-93 and went 4E at age 15. She has a lifetime production of 271,490 pounds of milk, 13,710 pounds of fat and 9,498 pounds of protein. Phinale never entered the show ring, but other family members have, such as Phamous, Phinale’s great-great-great granddaughter, a young fall heifer calf who placed second at the 2019 Wisconsin State Junior Fair.

Phinale’s blood runs through 20% of the herd, as 21 heifers and 14 cows on the farm are part of the Phinale family.

The most recent addition is a great-great granddaughter of Phinale and the family’s rst Red and White calf. In the past year, the Brewers have sold seven family members for dairy.

Glenn-Ann has a rolling herd average of 27,930 pounds of milk, 1,162 pounds of fat and 911 pounds of protein. Focused on type and genetics, the Brewers are also into merchandising

Phinale is the oldest cow Glenn-Ann has ever had, but other herd mates have also made it to their teenage years.

The next longest lasting cow came from a different family and reached age 16.

Traci said Phinale’s long life is not the result of pampering or special treatment.

“She always lived in the tiestall barn just like everybody else,” Traci said. “In the winter months, Phinale resides with the rest of the milking herd in loose housing.”

Phinale has a friendly, docile personality and a good attitude which Traci said is probably what helped her live this long. This unique cow has captured the hearts of everyone at Glenn-Ann and will continue to be treasured long after she passes.

“Phinale is part of our family,” Tami said. “She’ll always have a special place in our hearts.”

Trailblazers in organic dairy farming Millers embrace way of life for 20-plus years

COLUMBUS, Wis. – R&G Miller & Sons Organic Family Farms in Columbus, Wis., joined the organic movement well over 20 years ago – long before it was considered trendy.

“Back then, if you had a question about something, you couldn’t just Google it,” said Ron Miller, one of the farm’s owners. “And, there wasn’t another organic farm for more than 100 miles, so we couldn’t get advice from neighboring farms. We had to trailblaze our way through.”

Visitors from faraway places such as India, Japan, Wales, Malaysia and Nigeria toured the farm with Global Cow Ltd. and Global Dairy Outreach Oct. 2 to learn more about organic farming and what makes R&G Miller & Sons unique.

This organic dairy is larger than most, milking 375 cows and farming 1,550 acres. Cows are milked twice a day in a 30-stall rotary parlor built in 1990 – one of the rst of its kind in the state.

The herd is 85% Holstein with a sprinkling of Milking Shorthorn, Fleckvieh, Montbéliarde, Normande and Jersey.

Family-owned and operated since 1852, six family members work at R&G Miller & Sons, including Ron, general manager; Jim Miller, crop manager; Steve Miller, young stock manager; Gary Miller, feed manager; Mandy Mobry, ofce manager; and Julia Miller, milker. Mandy

Reinold Miller and his brother, Gerald, are the R and G in the farm’s name. Ron and Gary are sons of Gerald; and Jim and Steve are Reinold’s sons. Reinold did all the farm’s spraying; he passed away from cancer in 1992, which weighed heavily into the decision to go organic. Nobody in the next generation wanted to take over spraying, and the family was tired of being at the mercy of chemical companies dictating when to plant and spray, among other management decisions.

“We wanted to farm the way we wanted to,” Ron said. “We got

a lot of ak from a lot of neighbors when we started farming organically and lost money the rst few years while transitioning, but it was denitely the right decision for our farm.”

Certied organic since 1997, the Millers’ transition began in 1993. It took three years to certify the land organic and four years to process milk as organic. Marketed through Organic Valley, after feeding cattle organic feed for one year, their rst shipment of organic milk left the farm in May 1997.

“Organic Valley’s stable milk prices, commitment to the family farm and passion for the organic movement has been essential to our success,” Ron said.

“They provide lots of assistance to farmers.”

Melissa Weyland, Midwest East Regional Pool Manager for Organic Valley, works with the Millers and spoke to the tour group about organic farming and the requirements organic farms and processors must meet. She stressed the value of soil and that it takes three years to build the soils and bring biodiversity back into the farm. Weyland also emphasized the importance of animal welfare standards, particularly regarding grazing, bedding and outdoor access, noting that 30% of an organic cow’s dry matter intake must come directly from pasture.

The Millers focus on cow

comfort, nutrition and stress reduction. Cows eat a high-forage diet, spending half of their time on pasture. Split into four groups, cows are rotationally grazed, each group eating off an 8-acre paddock for four nights before moving to a new paddock. The farm’s 800 head of cattle graze 150-180 days per year on 450 acres, pasturing until early December. Organic farms are required to start pasturing an animal when she reaches 6 months of age. In the barn, cows are fed a TMR and stored feed.

“We never push our cows for production,” Ron said. “Instead, we focus on herd health. We have a low mortality rate of just 1%.

We’ll lose a calf now and then, but a cow dying is very rare for us.”

These organic farmers use vitamins, minerals, probiotics and a combination of herbs and whey products to enhance an animal’s immune system. Aspirin and homeopathic products are also sometimes used to treat various conditions.

If a cow gets mastitis, the Millers give her aspirin and probiotics to keep her healthy and may follow that with an aloebased treatment containing lots of herbs, which Ron said they nd effective.

Cows are eased into the dry period through once-a-day milking beginning one week prior to dry-off. Cows with high somatic cell count or those with previous mastitis issues receive Cinnatube™ and Phyto-Mast® in each quarter when going dry, which are organically certied products.

The Millers grow a variety of crops, including alfalfa, corn, soybean and small grains like

“It took some time, but we learned how to do it without spraying herbicides or pesticides,” Ron said. “We cultivate twice, rotary hoe and practice mechanical weed control. Now, we get just as good of yields with our corn as anyone else. And our custom guy said we have the best hay around.”

The Millers are devoted stewards of their land, committed to keeping the land healthy for future generations. Because organic farms do not use synthetic fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides, crop rotation is an integral practice for the organic farmer.

The Millers follow a current rotation of alfalfa for three years, corn for one year, soybean for one year, corn again for a year, small grain for one year and then back to alfalfa. This system helps disrupt insect life cycles, avoiding the need for pesticides while also combatting weeds. Weeds are also controlled through various eldwork techniques, timing of eld preparations,

propane burners and maintaining superior soil fertility. Furthermore, the dairy’s organic manure is a critical soil input and primary nitrogen source.

The farm also plows under cover crops, uses chicken manure compost, and adds mined potassium sulfate and mined gypsum to boost soil fertility. They also add micronutrients in accordance with National Organic Standards, soil testing and the farm’s nutrient management plan.

The Millers adjusted their breeding program before switching to organic, placing more emphasis on medium-sized cows equipped with good feet and legs – creating a cow with the endurance to pasture and ability to satisfy her appetite on grazing. For the past 13 years, the Millers have only bred their cows to A2A2 bulls while also placing a higher priority on compo-

Furthermore, in the last few years, they began breeding for polled cattle. Half of their calves currently do not require dehorning, and Ron said that number is continuing to rise. The Millers took a proactive approach to polling, getting started before it was a requirement, as all Organic Valley members are now being asked to do this.

“Ron is always ahead of the curve,” Weyland said.

“We milk about 1,000 cows near Miŋinburg, PA. As many of us know 2018 corn silage wasn’t very good feed. I started reading the adverƟsing from RECAL Microbials and thought ‘what the heck’ and called about it. I talked to Jamie Troxel about the RECAL and he wanted to come to my farm and see with his own eyes what was going on before he would even sell me any of the product because, like he said, ‘every farm is diīerent’. So, I thought why not, what’s it going to hurt? Plus, I liked the idea that he was willing to come out instead of working over the phone.

We were not having any major issues but we were seeing very inconsistent manure and weren’t seeing cows coming into heat. Jamie came to the farm, asked me some quesƟons about how the cows were doing, looked at my raƟon and silage, and walked the cows. Right away he picked out the inconsistent manure and noƟced that we had a lot of Įber passing Leroy Troester through. Jamie then pulled silage samples and checked the dry maƩers right 570-412-0704 then with Koster testers he carries in his truck. He told me he was sure that I tonite. was dealing with a mycotoxin issue even though I was already feeding a name brand binder, yeast and bentonite.

Jamie began telling me about the diīerences in the three RECAL probioƟc products and recommended the RECAL PLUS. He told me that I could pull out my toxin binder, yeast and bentonite. He also oīered me a thirty-day trial. If I wanted to try the product, he would give me the product for thirty days, tell me what to watch for and aŌer the thirty days if I wasn’t happy with the RECAL I paid absolutely nothing. But if I did like the product then I paid for the product used in the trial and we kept doing business together. With the way I am set up the only way he would do this trial was if we put some groups on the RECAL and not other groups, so we had a controlled trial. This way I could really see the diīerence. Since oīers like this don’t come around every day I thought why not, plus I liked the way Jamie wanted to prove the product and expressed that much conĮdence that it would work.

So that’s what we did. I started feeding the RECAL PLUS to two groups of milk cows, the pre fresh cows and fresh cows. I had also been feeding another probioƟc to my pre fresh and fresh cows but switched them to the RECAL. I started feeding the probioƟc that I had been using to the other two groups to make the trial even beƩer. Jamie also pulled a TMR sample and sent it to Cumberland Valley AnalyƟcal for a toxin test and it came back at 3.5 ppm vomitoxin.

There was NO comparison, aŌer about three days the groups that were on the RECAL showed more consistency in the manure and stronger heats. We saw no change in the groups that were not on RECAL. My Cargill nutriƟonist even came in and performed manure screenings for the controlled groups and was very impressed with the diīerence in Įber digesƟon. I then put the whole herd on RECAL PLUS and pulled out the toxin binder, yeast and bentonite I was feeding. We didn’t see much diīerence in milk producƟon but our %BF went from about 3.65% to about 4%. We have also started feeding the RECAL Calf Powder to all of our calves and my wife who takes care of the calves has been very happy with it as well.

Over the summer we have held about 80# milk with 3.75% BF on 50# DMI which is an FCM eĸciency of 1.67. Not too bad for dry corn silage combined with a hot summer and a lower than normal percent forage diet than I would like because we had to stretch the corn silage. ReproducƟon has held preƩy good with the summer heat. I can’t wait to see how the cows perform with 2019 corn silage and feeding the RECAL PLUS. I have been very happy with the RECAL probioƟcs and would highly recommend it to all dairymen. It’s not an expense when you see a return on your investment.”

This week’s Global Dairy Trade auction saw its weighted average of products offered move higher for the third consecutive session, up 0.5% following a 0.2% rise October 1 and the 2.0% jump on September 17.

Rennet casein led the charge, up 3.6%. Skim milk powder was up 2.4%, after a 2.7% rise, and anhydrous milkfat was up 0.8%.

GDT Cheddar again led the losses, down 2.2%, following a 3.4% dip. Butter inched 0.4% lower after slipping 0.2% last time. Whole milk powder was unchanged after slipping 0.2% last time.

FC Stone equated the GDT 80 percent butterfat butter price to $1.8166 per pound U.S. CME butter closed Friday at $2.1150. GDT Cheddar cheese equated to $1.6492 per pound, down 3.7 cents and compares to Friday’s CME block Cheddar at $1.9675.

GDT skim milk powder averaged $1.2441 per pound and compares to $1.2130 last time. Whole milk powder averaged $1.4212. CME Grade A nonfat dry milk closed Friday at $1.17 per pound.

Trade remains a volatile issue with the seemingly never ending dispute with China. President Trump meets with President Xi Jinping in Chile next month but there appears to be an agreement on Phase 1 which has halted additional tariffs.

FC Stone dairy broker Dave Kurzawski reported in the October 21 “Dairy Radio Now” broadcast that there is talk is of a purchase by China of $40-50 billion worth of US agricultural products and, to put that in perspective, he said that China’s 2017 purchases, before the trade dispute began, totaled about $17.7 billion. Last year they were just $7.7 billion, “so this is a sizable increase, however we do not know yet if the $40-$50 billion is spread over three or four years.”

Potentially it’s a really good deal for U.S. agriculture, Kurzawski said, though the United States does not export a large amount of dairy products to China.

That of course could increase and currently China has removed its tariffs on U.S. imports of dry whey which are needed to rebuild their hog population. Kurzawski says that while we currently have 30 cent dry whey at the CME, he believes we will see increased demand in 2020 “in spurts,” and with that, better prices.

The trade agreement with Japan also holds hope for the U.S. dairy industry as does the United StatesMexico-Canada trade agreement, which would replace the NAFTA. Unfortunately, the agreement has hit a snag in the House. The United Auto Workers Union has voiced

concern over the number of automotive related jobs it would create in the United States, according to the Northeast Dairy Farmers Cooperatives newsletter.

The cheese price roller coaster headed down this week as traders anticipated the September Milk Production and Cold Storage reports issued October 21 and 22 respectively. The Cheddar blocks closed October 18 at $1.9675 per pound, down 13 1/4-cents on the week but 47 cents above a year ago when they fell 11 1/4-cents. The barrels nished at $2.00, down 2 1/4-cents on the week, 73 1/4-cents above a year ago, but 3 1/4-cents above the blocks, rst inversion since May 10, 2019. Fifteen cars of block traded hands on the week at the CME and 17 of barrel.

Dairy Market News reported that Midwestern cheese producers blame $2-plus cheese for sliding sales but cheese output is steady. Milk owing to the Southeast has kept spot milk at a premium, typically around $1 over Class the past two weeks. Cheesemakers continue to use nonfat dry milk to standardize and fortify. Cheese inventories are balanced to tighter.

The Western market has gone through ups and downs the past few weeks and customers are resistant to current price trends. Production schedules are active. The higher prices are affecting international requests however, under the recent United States-Japan trade deal that might take effect by January 1, the US will see the elimination of Japan’s tariffs on cheese, its largest dairy product export to Japan.

The National Milk Producers Federation praised the Trump Administration for including a number of European dairy products, particularly cheeses from major EU exporters such as Italy, on a list of WTOauthorized retaliatory tariffs related to the successful U.S. case against European Airbus subsidies.

While Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella lobbied Trump this week not to impose the tariffs, NMPF declared; “We must reject European efforts to deceive the United States about the reality of Trans-Atlantic dairy trade. To that end, we asked the President to put the needs of U.S. dairy farmers above those of Italian and European farmers by maintaining the retaliatory tariff list against Europe.”

“The United States is running a $1.5 billion dairy trade decit with Europe because of unfair EU trade practices that largely block our access to their market while they enjoy broad access to ours. EU policies such as Italian-initiated bans on American-made parmesan, asiago and gorgonzola mean that they can ship us $1 billion in cheese each year while US cheese exports to the EU clock in at $6 million.”

“In light of this disparity and the EU’s refusal to meet its WTO commitments regarding illegal Airbus subsidies, American dairy farmers saw the proposed retaliatory tariff list’s strong focus on EU dairy and cheeses as at least temporarily creating a slightly more level playing eld for ‘Made in America’ products that face even higher barriers to entry in the EU market.”

Cash butter closed Friday at $2.1150 per pound, up 2 cents on the week but 14 1/2-cents below a year ago. 49 cars exchanged hands on the week.

Central butter output is steady and butter demand is generally steady regionally, says DMN, with some upticks due to the upcoming holidays. Cream is as available as it has been in recent weeks, both regionally and in the West but cream suppliers are getting more calls from Class II and III producers. Some even warn that there could be a seasonal shortage in the next few weeks.

Western butter contacts believe many end users have fourth quarter needs covered and buyers seem to be holding back on the normal holiday purchase fervor. There is plenty of cream available and butter Inventories, while getting drawn down seasonally, are thought to be heavy, says DMN. Grade A nonfat dry milk climbed to $1.17 per pound, highest since February 18, 2015, up a halfcent on the week and 29 3/4-cents above a year ago on 17 sales.

Dry whey saw a Friday close at 28 1/2-cents per pound, down 1 3/4-cents on the week, lowest CME price since April 4, 2018, and a whopping 29 cents below a year ago. There were 62 trades reported on the week, down from 71 the previous week and 80 the week before that.

Lots of eyes remain on crops still in US elds, especially after the USDA’s surprise increase in projected corn yield per acre last week. The Daily Dairy Report’s Sarina Sharp wrote in the October 11 Milk Producer Council newsletter: “Most dairy producers report that corn silage yields have been better than feared but lower than last year” and she warned that ‘Feed quality could be a major issue in the year to come. Dairy producers with low-quality forage may struggle to increase milk yields despite powerful economic incentives to do so. Higher milk prices will surely encourage higher milk output. However, between feed quality issues, depleted bank accounts, lower heifer inventories, and a smaller dairy herd, the U.S. dairy producers’ ability to add a lot of milk may be limited.”

Much of the western central Corn Belt had temperatures low enough and long enough to cause signicant damage to the crop over the weekend of October 6. FC Stone warned that the corn and soybean crops were damaged but we won’t know how much “until we get more of it out of the eld.” “The frost event was more pronounced and dove deeper south than originally expected.”

Next week’s Crop Progress report may indicate the weather damage but this week’s report showed 22% of US corn crop has been harvested, as of the week ending October 13, down from 38% a year ago and 14% behind the ve year average. 55% was rated good to excellent, down from 68% a year ago.

26% of the soybeans have been harvested, down from 37% a year ago and 23% behind the ve year average. 54% are good to excellent, 12% behind a year ago.

Checking dairy’s bottom line, “Class III milk futures have climbed mostly higher since the beginning of the month and attractive margins remain in play as feed costs have held relatively steady,â€? according to the latest Margin Watch (MW) from Chicago-based Commodity & Ingredient Hedging LLC. The MW stated; “Margins in the fourth quarter are approaching the 95th percentile of historical profitability within the last decade, driven largely by high Class III futures. Margins in the ďƒžrst and second quarter of 2020 are above the 85th percentiles, providing opportunities to protect potentially attractive pricing.â€?

The MW added that “Recently announced additional tariffs on multiple EU dairy products, primarily cheeses, are expected to result in reduced imports� and said the USDA’s World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report was “bearish for corn and friendly for soybeans. Corn production estimates were above pre-report estimates as the average national yield was increased to 168.4 bushels per acre while the demand picture continued to suffer amid lower ethanol production and export demand. Ending stocks were lowered slightly to 1.929 billion bushels but were larger than pre-report expectations.� “Soybean production was lowered in the report due to a lower national average yield (46.9 bushels per acre) and lowered harvested acres. Soybean ending stocks were lowered slightly as export shipments continue to outpace the USDA forecast and the crush was raised by 5 million bushels,� the MW concluded.

Looking at dairy demand; HighGround Dairy (HGD) reports that “While August total cheese disappearance dropped below prior year levels for the ďƒžrst time since January, the prior year comparable value was strong as August 2018 marked the third strongest month of last year for total cheese disappearance.â€? “Disappearance has not shown strong month to month volatility this year with most months within 5 million pounds of the 1.1- billion-pound mark,â€? says HGD. “Disappearance was pulled lower by lower domestic and export demand in the month. August marked the strongest month of the year to date for domestic disappearance but the weakest month of the year to date for total cheese exports. American-style cheese disappearance was down slightly but marked the strongest disappearance in a single month so far this year.â€?

Butter disappearance jumped and marked the strongest demand month of 2019 to date, according to HGD, topping a year ago for the ďƒžrst time since May and nonfat dry milk disappearance dropped after good performances in June and July but domestic demand remained above 2018 for the third consecutive month.

Total dry whey disappearance was down following July’s move higher says HGD. US ďƒ&#x;uid milk sales also fell in August, following a small increase in July. The latest USDA data shows 3.87 billion pounds of packaged ďƒ&#x;uid sales in August, down 1.9% from August 2018.

Conventional product sales totaled 3.7 billion pounds, down 1.7% from a year ago. Organic products, at 208 million pounds, were down 6.6% and represented 5.4% of total sales for the month.

Whole milk sales totaled 1.3 billion pounds, up 0.8% from a year ago and made up 33.4% of total ďƒ&#x;uid sales in the month. Sales for the eight month period totaled 10 billion pounds, up 1.1% from a year ago.

Skim milk sales, at 274 million pounds, were down 9.7% and made up 7.1% of total milk sales for the month.

Packaged ďƒ&#x;uid milk sales, January through August totaled 30.4 billion pounds, down 1.8% from a year ago.

Conventional products year-to-date totaled 28.8 billion pounds, down 1.7%. Organic products, at 1.7 billion pounds, were down 3.8% and represented about 5.4% of total ďƒ&#x;uid milk sales for the period.

Lastly, the National Milk Producers Federation has joined calls for the Environmental Protection Agency to â€œďƒžnish the required scientiďƒžc review of an inďƒ&#x;uential groundwater study in Washington State.â€?

NMPF called on EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler to have the EPA conduct a full review of what they’re calling a “ďƒ&#x;awedâ€? study and joined sev-

eral other groups seeking EPA action on the Yakima nitrate study, including the American Dairy Coalition, Congressman Dan Newhouse, the Washington State Dairy Federation, Save Family Farming, and others. “Aside from the apparent ďƒ&#x;aws in the study, perhaps the most startling issue is the fact that this study has inďƒ&#x;uenced decisions made by EPA without the required full review,â€? wrote Clay Detlefsen, NMPF’s Senior Vice President and Staff Counsel, in the letter to Administrator Wheeler. “While cursory reviews were conducted, whole sections were left out,â€? he said, and Detlefsen listed four key areas where the study was ďƒ&#x;awed and based on errors and inadequate data. His letter says the study “appears to unfairly accuse the Washington State dairy farmers for contributing the majority of high nitrate levels in lower Yakima valley groundwaterâ€? At least 15 top scientists have rejected the study, saying the data that was gathered doesn’t support its conclusions.

HELPING GOOD MANAGERS MAKE BETTER TRADING DECISIONS The big story in the cheese market is a complete flip in the block/barrel price spread ($1.9675 blocks vs. $2.00 barrels). On September 16, 2019 the block cheddar spot market price was trading 39.5 cents premium to barrels.

Recent trading sessions has flipped the spread to barrels trading over blocks. Looking back at history, December 2017 has been the only other time where the spread changed that significantly in such a short period of time.

Although it is nice to see spot cheese prices over $2.00, one has to wonder why. Cheese futures remain discounted to front end cash strength which is the market saying it doesn’t believe the strength will hold into deferred months. International cheese prices continue to trade in the $1.50 to $1.70ish range, and U.S. cold storage inventories of block and barrel cheddar appear plenty adequate. So why is U.S. cheese trading at a 30-40 cent premium to the world?

It is common for the spot market to trade in a more supportive posture than aged cheddar. This is due to rules that only allow fresh cheese less than 30 days old to be physically traded in the spot session. In the past, the market has seen durations of time where the fresh

cheese supply is tight, but there are adequate supplies of older than 30 day cheese in inventory. During these times, fresh cheese buyers can make the market look more supportive than the bigger supply picture. That is likely the cause of the current situation, but does not explain the block/barrel spread volatility.

NDM prices continue to improve as they approach $1.20/lb., while whey values remain under pressure at 28.5 cents. Typically NDM/whey values trade at a 3 to 1 price ratio. Over the past several years the ratio has seen a stronger whey value relationship, but is now transitioning to favor NDM prices.

Soybean meal prices have been firming as soybean supply projections tighten. Harvest continues to advance, but wet weather has traders concerned that unharvested acres may run higher than normal.

My chicken scratching math says a loss of 3-5% of unharvested acres creates a supportive price picture.

Perazzo Brothers Dairy operate in west central Nevada

FALLON, Nev. – When you think of dairy farming, you may not think of the high desert of west central Nevada. But, this is the area Perazzo Brothers Dairy calls home.

Located about 60 miles east of Reno, Nev., Perazzo Brothers Dairy is operated by brothers David and Alan Perazzo along with David’s sons, Daniel and Michael, and Alan’s sons, Tyler and Brent. The Perazzos milk 1,100 Holsteins three times a day on their 230-acre farmstead. They hope to expand their herd by several hundred head in the near future.

In 1989, a few years after

taking ownership of the family dairy, David and Alan remodeled their dairy facilities to a double-10 parallel parlor and expanded their herd to 450 head. They wanted to add more cows, but there was no place for the additional milk to go.

“We didn’t have enough processing capacity locally,” Alan said. “This meant that we had to send some of our milk over the hill to be processed in California. Transportation costs were very high.”

“The highway crews do an excellent job of keeping Donner Pass open, but sometimes it just isn’t possible,” Alan said.

“There would be times when our milk tanks were full, and we had to send milk down the drain.”

This changed in 2014, when Dairy Farmers of America constructed a new milk drying plant in Reno, Nev. “The additional processing capacity that came with the new DFA drying plant made it possible for us to expand our herd to its present size,” Alan said.

David and Alan Perazzo are the third genera�on of their family to operate their dairy farm. In 2014, they expanded their herd from 450 head to 1,100 head, a move that was made possible by the construc�on of a new DFA milk drying plant in Reno, Nev. and sold to the export market.

“We receive a blend price that’s based on what percentage of the valley’s milk is bottled and what percentage is sold as Class IV dried milk,” Alan said.

“But our transportation costs are much less than when we had to ship milk to California.”

Dairying in the desert means being acutely aware of water usage.

“We do everything that we can to conserve water,” Alan said. “Some of our water is used ve times. You have to learn how to use every gallon of water as efciently as possible.”

When the Perazzo family constructed their new barn, they did much of the work themselves. The cost savings enabled them to add a little something extra to their facilities.

“We decided to put a museum in the area above the ofce,” Alan said. “The museum has a window that gives visitors a view of the milking parlor. Our mother, Nancy, taught kindergarten for over 30 years and wanted to continue the tradition of education. We collected some of the old equipment such as milk buckets, butter churns and cream separators that our grandfather had used and put it in the museum. It’s good for kids to see how things were done back in the old days and compare that to how we do things now.”

The roots of the Perazzo dairy operation can be traced back to Ellis Island.

“Our grandfather, Otto Perazzo, was 3 years old when he and his family immigrated from Italy to America,” Alan said.

“Otto came to Nevada as a young man.

He settled in the Lahontan Valley and married his wife, Noma. In 1941, Otto and Noma began a dairy operation. They

milked six Shorthorn cows by hand in an old chicken coop that had a dirt oor.

They separated the cream and stored it in a concrete basin that was lled with cool water.”

A dam that had been built in the early 1900s made the dream of irrigating the Lahontan Valley a reality. The area came to be known as the Eden of Nevada.

John, David, Alan’s father, and John’s brother, Jim, eventually took over Otto’s dairy operation. In 1972, John and Jim built a double-4 herringbone parlor and expanded their herd to 100 head. David joined the dairy operation in 1981.

Alan followed suit in 1983.

Sharing their dairy story is very important to the Perazzo family.

“We invite friends and schoolchildren out to our farm so that they can learn where their milk comes from,” David said. “We feel that we have been extremely blessed and want to give back to the community.”

Perazzo Brothers Dairy had over 400 visitors to their dairy in one day.

“This past June 1 was World Milk Day, so we put out an invitation for folks to come to our dairy and take a tour,” Alan said.

In 2018, Perazzo Brothers Dairy was named the DFA Member of Distinction for the western area. This honor is given to dairy operators who excel in their operations, their community and the industry.

“Dairy farming is a tough life, but it’s a good life,” Alan said. “It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s enjoyable, too. I’m excited to work with my sons and my nephews and see the next generation of our family continue our dairy farming tradition.”

“He hauls for other people and is here at the farm to help at night and on the weekends,” Richard said. “He likes to do it (trucking) and it’s good income for the farm.”

Carl started on the farm full time in 2005 after he attended Dakota County Technical County for heavy equipment mechanics.

“We try to work on equipment ourselves,” he said. “But when it’s the electronics or computer we don’t.”

After Richard helped Carl get the head on the combine, Carl started harvesting the eld. As the combine rolled through the eld, the day’s strong wind gusts kicked up dust and bean stubble, swirling it around the powerful machine. Just to the north, was a small eld of fourth crop of cut alfalfa waiting to be chopped the next day.

“She was my best tractor driver,” Richard said. “When she left the eld, it was ready. She was particular about getting it right.”

Now the majority of the tractor and equipment driving is given to their sons. It is how their farm progressed as Richard and Alice gure out farm transition for their family.

“Transition is hard,” Richard said.

“Things have gotten so expensive.”

When Richard bought the farm from his parents in 1981, he paid $2,000 per acre.

“And then I farmed through the ‘80s when it was the tough farm economy,” Richard said. “My dad helped me until he passed away.”

Richard hopes to be able to help his sons while passing on the family farm.

The rest of the morning and afternoon were focused on getting the soybeans harvested. While Carl combined, Jake drove the grain cart and Richard drove the semi to the grain bin set up to unload when needed.

By 4 p.m., Alice, Torin and Walter fed calves and Richard brought in the dairy herd from the pasture.

“It looks like I’m milking tonight,” Richard said.

Milking usually is not his job anymore since he had knee replacement surgery a few years ago; however, Richard did not mind the change in the day’s schedule.

“Milking is an easy compared to everything we do,” Richard said. “It’s relaxing.”

After milking, they continued with soybean harvest before calling it a day at about 9 p.m.

An inch of snow fell two weeks ago, but it all melted the next day. We got our silage chopped and our soybeans har- RAINFALL vested last week. We finished silage corn on Saturday (Oct. 19). It’s a good feeling because it took almost five weeks.

In our immediate area the soybeans are done. A lot of the bushels are in the low 50s. Our silage is all done; we filled a silo and a bag with nice quality corn silage. The crop was nice and we had RAINFALL no problem getting in TOTALS and out of the fields Last 2 here. Some guys Weeks around us are going on their beans and starting on their corn, but very little of either has been picked. The 0.7” corn is still high in moisture. I’ve seen a bunch of potatoes Since April 14 still in the ground yet.

We finished our corn silage.

I was very pleased with both the yield and the quality of my corn silage. I got my winter rye planted for a cover crop where I chopped RAINFALL TOTALS corn silage. I did get some more dry hay made, about Last 2 700 small squares of grass Weeks hay. If the weather gets nice, I’ve got some more grass hay I might try making. I had planted some barley that I have been green chopping. As far as in our area, everyone is pretty much wrapping up their corn silage and everyone is Since April 14 well underway with beans.

Parmesan-crusted pork chops 1 egg 1 Tbsp. water 1/4 cup Progresso™ Italian style bread crumbs

1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese 4 boneless pork loin chops, 3/4 inch thick (4 to 5 oz. each) 1 Tbsp. olive oil

Heat oven to 400°F. Line 15x10x1-inch pan with foil; place cooling rack in pan. In shallow bowl, beat egg and water with fork or whisk. In another shallow bowl, stir bread crumbs and Parmesan cheese until well blended. Dip each pork chop into egg mixture; coat with bread crumb mixture. In 12-inch nonstick skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add pork chops; cook 1 to 2 minutes, turning once, until golden brown. Place pork chops in pan. Bake 13 to 18 minutes or until pork is no longer pink in center and meat thermometer inserted in center reads 145°F.
