Older cows a staple in Wegner herd Over half of the barn is over 6 years old

MARSHFIELD, Wis. – If Charlie and Janelle Wegner compare their ages in bovine equivalency to the cows in their herd, the couple would be considered the youngsters of the bunch. Nearly half the Wegners’ milking herd is over six years of age.

“Longevity is really important to us,” Charlie said.

“These older cows are all still

“Originally the herd was a registered Guernsey herd,” Charlie said. “My dad decided he wanted more milk production and started crossbreeding to Red and White Holsteins.”

Today most of the cows are Red and Whites, with a few black and white Holsteins and some Holstein-Jersey crosses.

“It is nice not having to break in 10 2-year-olds every year,” Charlie said. “The younger cows can sometimes have a bit of an attitude and spunk. The older cows each have their own personality.

The Wegners took over the Marsheld farm and purchased the herd from Charlie’s parents in 2018. Today, along with their son, Liam, 3, they are milking 42 cows. Charlie is the third generation of his family to dairy farm in central

The Wegners place a great emphasis on cow comfort and feel that is one of the greatest keys to the long productive lives their cows enjoy.

The Wegners rotate their pastures as much as possible, allowing the cows to spend the growing season grazing. In the barn, they feed a ration of grain, haylage and dry hay.

“Our neighbors always say they enjoy seeing our cows out on pasture,” Janelle said.

“They look clean, comfortable and happy.”

Another key to lasting cows is the relationship the Wegners have developed with their veterinarians, having regular herd health visits and developing protocols for avoiding when possible and treating when necessary mastitis, milk

Trot is an 11 year old cow on the Wegner’s farm, and has six milking daughters in their herd. tests for pregnancy detection, so vet visits were limited,” Charlie said. “That sometimes led to lots of dry cows being open. When we took over, we decided to go back to ultrasounding for pregnancy. That has allowed us to develop a good working relationship with our vets.”

With a lower herd turnover the Wegners sometimes have to be creative when it comes to managing their replacement inventory. Without using sexed semen, they said they still have a relatively high percentage of heifer calves.

“There are always one or two cows in the herd that will have to move on, but it is sometimes hard to get good prices for the extras as dairy replacement heifers,” Charlie said. “We usually give a heifer a couple of chances to breed, and if she doesn’t settle, we will cull them. Otherwise I will try to search out farmers that might be looking for replacements.”

The oldest cow in the barn is Twinette, who is 14 years old. She is due back in March for her 12th lactation and is carrying a set of mixed twins.

Twinette is not only a twin herself, but was a twin to a bull, making her story that much more unique.

“She breeds back on the rst service almost every year,” Janelle said.

“We always keep all of our Freemartin

heifer calves, in the hopes they might turn out. We are hopeful that Twinette’s heifer calf this year will be as lucky as she was.”

The second oldest cow in the herd is an undisputed farm-favorite, one of the few black and white Holsteins named Venus. One reason 13-year-old Venus is a favorite is that there are ve generations of her family living on the farm. In the barn, Venus stands in the end stall, and her only Red and White daughter stands in the stall next to her.

Eleven-year-old Trot is another standout in the herd, with six of her daughters claiming stalls in the barn along with her.

“I like the history and being able to look back through the records and follow the family lines,” Janelle said.

“Most of the herd traces back to two cows. I think that is pretty neat.”

Caring for the cows and working with each as an individual is what both Charlie and Janelle love most about dairy farming, and they both embrace the past history and look forward to the future.

“Being able to continue the farm, and continue to develop the herd and work towards our goals, while taking the best care we can of these girls is an honor,” Janelle said. “We are so grateful Charlie’s parents gave us that opportunity.”

care of the calves and heifers I keep at my house and then head off to school.

After school, I head to work and then take care of the heifers. Then, I go to the farm to help with chores.

How has working on the farm shaped your character? Working on the farm has shaped by character by teaching me a great work ethic and teaching me there is always something new to learn.

It keeps me open to new ideas and has taught me that communication and awareness are important.

Employers: Tell us your favorite experience of your employee helping with chores.

Most of the fun times we have on the farm is goong off and teasing Bronson when we are working. We can be doing the most labor-intensive jobs, and we just talk and laugh about anything and everything. I hope someday Dana is able to look back and have great memories on the farm and sees the payoff of her hard work.

What qualities does your employee have that benet the farm? I can tell her a list of jobs that need to get done and she can work independently to complete them. If she has questions, she is not afraid to ask. I always try to encourage asking questions over guessing.

Dana: What are your responsibilities on the farm? Responsibilities I have on the farm are milking, bedding calf huts, feeding cows and giving medication when needed. Other things I do around the farm is helping build fence, washing equipment, raking hay and running

What do you love most about farm life? What I love most about farm life is that no two days are the same. Every day there is a new challenge to overcome. It is never boring to say the least.

When did you begin helping on the farm? I began helping on the farm about four years ago. My sister and I wanted to get involved with showing dairy cattle, and we were looking for a local farm to work with for that. That is when we found Maddie and Bronson.

We began helping on the farm because we did not just want to walk into the

ring and show a cow, but we wanted to learn every aspect of working with the cattle.

How do you balance school, extracurricular activities and farm chores? Balancing school, work and farm chores can sometimes be overwhelming. Learning how to multi-task and balance my day has helped greatly.

When I wake up in the morning, I take

What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your parents/employer? One thing I have learned is that being in the dairy industry is truly hard work, both physically and mentally. Both Maddie and Bronson have full-time jobs off the farm but also remain dedicated to their dairy herd. I have learned a lot from them and their dedication.

What are your future plans? My future plans would be to stay in the industry and continue raising heifers. I would like to be able to be a mentor for someone, like Maddie and Bronson have been for me. I also hope to be able to teach tting clinics as that is one of my biggest passions with the cattle.
