WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sitting around their kitchen table, paging through memorabilia and photos, Mia and Alex Roerick are still in awe of their trip to Washington, D.C. With peers from Upsala Area High School and their mother, Julie, the Roericks ew to the nation’s capitol Jan. 16, spending the week touring the historic city and attending the 58th presidential inauguration Jan. 20.

“This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Mia, the high school senior. “When the trip became available, I knew I wanted to participate.”

Alex agreed.

“Other schools might not have this chance, so I wanted to go,” he said.

The Roericks – Gerald and Julie, and their three children, Mia, 17, Alex, 15, and Kylie, 12 – milk 80 cows near Upsala, Minn., with Gerald’s brother, Allen.

A surprise trio Cow gives birth to triplet heifer calves at Torgerson dairy

VIROQUA, Wis. – Although Dale Torgerson was surprised to nd one of his cows calving during chores Jan. 11, he was even more shocked that he had three live heifers calves from that cow after the birthing process was done.

“It’s pretty neat to have this on our farm,” he said.

Torgerson milks 40 cows with his wife, Brenda, and their three kids, Erin, 12, Katy, 9, and Myle, 7, on their dairy near Viroqua, Wis. After being at the farm show in La Crosse, Wis., during the afternoon, Torgerson returned home to prepare for evening milking. When he entered the barn, Torgerson saw the 6-yearold Holstein laboring in her stall.

“She had it on her own just ne. She plopped it out really easily,” said Torgerson, who moved the calf to the front of the cow so she could lick it.

He went to his barn desk and started to write out the calf’s ear tag – complete with the name Abby, which he had chosen for the newest animal on the farm – when he noticed the cow continuing to push. After a short wait, the cow gave birth to another heifer calf.

“I don’t like twins, but

you’ll have it. So I took a picture and sent it to my wife to tell her this cow had twins,” he said.

But two minutes later, Torgerson saw the third calf coming.

“I thought, ‘Oh my gosh.

You’ve got to be kidding me,’” Torgerson said.

Since the head was turned back, Torgerson helped get the calf in the right position.

“Then she had it really easily and it just popped right out, too. I’m just glad it wasn’t a bull,” he said about the last calf.

After encouraging the calf to take a breath, Torgerson put that calf in front of the cow along with its sisters. “[The cow] didn’t know which one to lick. It was kind of funny,” Torgerson said. “I sent a picture of all three to my wife. I don’t think she believed me.”

Brenda was able to see the trio when she returned home from work.

Since the calving, the triplet heifers and their mother are doing well.

“No. 11 [the cow] had no trouble at all. As far as I can remember, she’s always had calves pretty easy,” Torgerson said.

Torgerson had no idea the cow was pregnant with multiples.

“We had pregnancy checked her and a lot of times the vet will see if there are two in there,”

Torgerson said. “That didn’t happen this time.”

The cow isn’t big in stature, either. Torgerson described her as being a smaller cow that weighs around 1,100 pounds.

As for the calves, Torgerson described them as being goodsized considering they were triplets. He guessed the rst one weighs 70 pounds while the second and third calves weigh between 50 and 60 pounds.

Although Torgerson had the name Abby chosen for the original heifer, he decided to choose names that matched.

“I put a text out to a bunch of friends for name ideas and narrowed it down to three options. They all like the Flintstones,” Torgerson said.

The heifers’ names are Betty, Wilma and Pebbles. Close seconds were Snap, Crackle and Pop.

“We just started naming cattle a few years ago. I nd it difcult to nd good names, but my wife and kids like naming them,” Torgerson said.

This trio of calves is the rst set of live triplets Torgerson has had on his farm.

“I just hope I can keep them alive so they can grow and we can breed them to be in the herd,” Torgerson said. “So far they seem pretty healthy.”

MELROSE, Minn. – A healthy, productive herd begins with the youngstock – raising calves with a strong, developed immune system and digestive tract.

Dairy producers gathered Jan. 18 to learn about different tactics of raising healthy calves during the 2017 Calf Meeting in Melrose, Minn. Centra Sota Cooperative, Cold Spring Cooperative, Purina Animal Nutrition and DSM hosted the meeting.

“Nutrition and health – how do they correlate?” said Melissa Holtz, Purina.

At birth, a calf’s rumen and abomasum are each the size of a softball, with the rumen capable of processing small amounts of water and feed, and the abomasum reserved for milk.

“To get the best bang for our buck, we have to feed newborn calves one gallon of colostrum within six hours of birth,” Holtz said. “And, then start grain at an early age, too.”

If the cow does not produce enough colostrum for the rst few feedings, producers should complement the calf’s diet with a colostrum milk replacer or antioxidant supplement.

“We have to understand the value of colostrum,” said Dr. Mark Engstrom of DSM, a vitamin company. “Although we think all the solids are in the rst milking, some vitamins come in the second milking; they hang back.”

Among the antioxidants that could be supplemented, vitamin E is the most important, followed by vitamin A, provitamin A (beta-carotene) and selenium, said Engstrom.

A powder supplement can be added to the milk replacer, or beta-carotene can be incorporated into the cows’ ration and then transferred to the calf through colostrum consumption.

“Antioxidants help prime the immune system and make it ready to go,” Engstrom said.

During this time, producers should monitor their calves for signs of scours and dehydration, refueling with electrolytes if needed.

However, electrolytes can be avoided if 12 ounces of milk replacer is mixed properly at 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

“Consistency is extremely important,” Holtz said. “If the water temperature is below what it should be, the fat doesn’t go into the solution. You might have to put a little elbow grease into mixing so that the powder goes into suspension.”

As producers focus on calf milk consumption, they also need to consider the amount of grain and hay calves can have in their diet during the rst few weeks after birth.

Holtz suggests providing 0.5 pounds of grain to young calves to help develop the rumen papillae.

As the rumen develops to a capacity of one gallon, the abomasum remains the same size.

“After eight weeks, the rumen doubles in size,” Holtz said. “Until then, calves don’t have room for hay.”

Beginning at 8 weeks, the rumen further develops with volatile fatty acids and begins rumination.

At 12 weeks, the digestive system is capable of digesting hay.

“Then, the rumen is big enough to take hay in,” Holtz said. “If you provide ber too early, the [rumen] mat isn’t formed and the grain can’t do what it’s supposed to do.”

Feeding equipment should be rinsed and sanitized frequently with hot water, feed buckets should be cleaned and relled on a regular basis to avoid molding of the grain, and bedding should always be clean and dry.

“Cleanliness has a huge impact on health,” said Kayla Blake, Purina.

By maintaining proper health and supporting a strong immune system during the early weeks of age, calves can ward off potentially dangerous infections, such as Salmonella and Bovine Coronavirus (BCV).

“In stressful times, calves are more susceptible to these infections,” said Dr. Amber Hazel, Purina. “Especially during weaning, we see symptoms develop – scours, respiratory problems and blood poisoning.”

While Salmonella is bacteria naturally found in the body of the animal, as it is shed through milk and manure calves are susceptible to infection.

“It can be really tough on calves.

We saw that this year with the outbreak in Wisconsin,” Hazel said. “Calves won’t want to eat much, but we have

to keep feeding for the immune system – to get the gut bugs moving.”

Hazel encourages administering a Salmonella vaccine if raising many calves.

BCV is also a disease that can be transmitted easily and is difcult to treat once it progresses.

Hazel noted a study conducted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which observed 147 farms, of which, 50 percent tested positive for BCV. Furthermore, those expressing symptoms were twice as likely to be treated for pneumonia.

“BCV is an immunosuppressant that allows other bacteria to come in and cause an infection; like a cold before the u arrives,” Hazel said. “We need to learn to identify this early in calves.”

However, understanding the nutrition and management needs of young calves will help avoid these health hazards and provide a stable start to their life in the herd.

“There’s no silver bullet,” Engstrom said. “We need to be in front of the curve as calves grow out of a passive into an active immune system.”

People in the dairy community Lindahl receives $1,000 grant from Caterpillar A $1,000 grant has been awarded to FFA member Isabelle Lindahl of Lindstrom, Minn., by Caterpillar. The SAE Grant is designed to help FFA members create and enhance their supervised agricultural experience (SAE), a requirement that all FFA members must complete. An SAE requires FFA members to create and operate an agriculture-related business, work at an agriculture-related business or conduct an agricultural research experience.

Upon completion, FFA members must submit a comprehensive report regarding their supervised ag experience (SAE).

Lindahl, the daughter of Kevin and Tara, is a member of the Chisago Lakes FFA Chapter of Lindstrom, MN, and was selected from hundreds of applicants nationwide.

Steve Tuman, 1947-2017 Steven Tuman passed away on Jan. 6 at his home, at the age of 69 years. Steven was a dairy farmer operating and owning Willow Wells Farm. He was a member of the Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders Association. Steven served as a judge at numerous county, state, and national dairy shows. He may have judged every county fair in the state more than once. He judged State Holstein Shows, State Brown Swiss Shows, State Fairs of all breeds, and World Dairy Expo in 1994, 2004 and the National Brown Swiss in Bucaramanga, Columbia in 1989. His favorite events to judge were 4-H shows because he loved working with the youth. He served as President of the Minnesota Brown Swiss Association and of the Purebred Dairy Cattle Association. Steven was also a former member of the PDCA board, Meeker County ADA, Meeker County Fairboard, and helped with the plans for the dairy building

at the Meeker County fair. What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in?

I am involved in FFA where I am on the agronomy and forage judging teams. Additionally, I have taken animal science classes. The introduction to agriculture class has taught me about the diversity in agriculture.

Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? I really like agriculture, being outside and enjoying nature. Growing up, my dad was always in agriculture and it is the life I know. FFA is my favorite activity. I did a lot of community service activities and realized how much I liked it. Next, I started getting involved in the judging teams and found I enjoyed that.

Later on, I decided I wanted to be a part of the ofcer team. I applied last year and was elected as the chapter reporter. This year, I am the chapter president.

Tell us about your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. Placing third in the agronomy judging contest at state. Only the rstplace team advances to nationals, and we were just 15 points away from rst. Our goal this year is to place rst and advance to the national contest.

What is your favorite social media?

Snapchat and Facebook. I like Snapchat because I can text my friends, but it’s more exciting because we can see what each other is doing. As for Facebook, I’m not one to post much myself, but I like keeping up with what others are doing and staying connected with family members.

What are your career aspirations? I will be attending University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Farm and Industry Short Course in the fall. I plan to do that for two

years before coming back to the farm. I would like to work with my dad until the time comes for me to take over the farm.

If for any reason that doesn’t pan out, I would like to work in an agricultural eld such as mechanics.

What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? Being involved in judging, I have learned the benets of studying. When I started judging, I didn’t study. Our team would advance to state but wouldn’t do very well. Last year, I studied and saw how that could pay off.

It has also taught me persistence, and that even if things aren’t going the way I had hoped, it is important to keep going to become better.

Who do you look up to? My parents.

They have taught me so much. My dad taught me everything I know about farming. My mom, who is a teacher, has always helped me with my schoolwork.

They always come to all my sporting events. I feel like I can talk to them about anything and everything. They have treated me very well growing up.

Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. When someone needs help or is afraid of doing something, I’m willing to step up and do it or help them through it. I’m not afraid of doing wild things or trying new things.

What’s your favorite and least favorite chore? My favorite chore is feeding calves even though newborns are more difcult.

Feeding calves is denitely one of the easier chores. My least favorite is milking cows because it takes a long time and for me, it’s one of the messier jobs.

Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? My horse, Sophie, is adorable and is like my best friend. We do shows and work together really well. It’s also fun to go on random trail rides with friends.

I do chores after school and on weekends. The chores I do are feeding calves, milking cows, running feed out to the cows, scraping the barn oor, bedding the stalls and mixing up feed.

What’s your favorite and least favorite chore? My favorite chore is milking because then I get to see all the cows. My least favorite chore is feeding newborn calves because they don’t cooperate.

Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? My favorite cow is 484 (Grace) because she is very friendly and has quite the personality. She was my 4-H heifer.

University of Minnesota Extension, sponsored by Pine Country Bank, will be presenting their newest farm nancial workshop “Taking Charge of Your Finances: How to Survive and Thrive” on Feb. 14 at 10 a.m. This 4-hour workshop is lled with an interactive case study that provides information and strategies to help farm families be better prepared to make internal farm management decisions and also build stronger relationships with external partners.

In “Taking Charge of Your Finances: How to Survive and Thrive,” participants get a greater understanding of balance sheets, income statements, and cash ows. They will also be better equipped to utilize their farm nancial records and will have a greater understanding of the nancial tools that will assist them with making better nancial management and nancing decisions. As part of the workshop, participants will act as a loan review committee to analyze the credit worthiness of a case study farm. Minnesota Ag Water Quality Certication Program certies 300th farm The Minnesota Agricultural Water Quality Certication Program (MAWQCP) has surpassed 300 certied farms, marking a year of strong growth with a milestone. This voluntary program works with farmers and landowners to identify and mitigate risks to water quality on a eld by eld basis.

The Minnesota Agricultural Water Quality Certication Program has certied 306 farms representing virtually every kind of agricultural production from all across the state.

The 300th farm certied is the Twin Eagle Dairy operated by Pat and Jody Lunemann in Todd County. The Lunemann’s milk 800 cows and farm 1,500 acres of corn, alfalfa and grass to help feed their herd.

“We wanted to get certied to demonstrate that we are doing the best job we can to make sure we have clean water,” said Pat Lunemann. “Initially, we didn’t know what to expect with the program, but as we worked with our local certication specialists we found solutions that worked for our farm and protected the water.”

The MAWQCP is delivered in partnership with the Board of Water & Soil Resources, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, the Department of Natural Resources, and Minnesota’s 89 Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD). Through this collaborative effort, the state agencies and SWCDs are able to leverage their individual strengths to work together to recognize and reward farmers for their work protecting Minnesota’s most iconic natural resource. This innovative model of conservation planning and delivery has created a program that has been embraced by Minnesota’s farm and livestock producers. In 2016 alone, the MAWQCP certied 221 farms and 125,000 acres.

“The success of the Ag Water Certication Program reafrms that no one cares more about water quality than Minnesota farmers,” said Lt. Governor Tina Smith. “I want to thank the Ag producers who have already participated in the program, and reiterate my continued commitment to building a collaborative relationship between state government and Minnesota farmers.”

The 306 farms certied by the MAWQCP represent over 175,000 acres of working lands. To date, these farms have generated 531 new best management practices that are keeping 14.7 million pounds of soil on Minnesota elds annually, and keeping 9.7 million pounds of sediment and 6,086 pounds of phosphorous from entering our lakes, rivers, and streams annually.

After being certied, each farm is deemed to be in compliance with new water quality laws and regulations for 10 years. Certication is also an approved practice farmers can use to comply with the new state buffer law. Certied farmers and landowners can use their certication status to promote their businesses as protective of water quality.

At least 10 of the scholarships will be awarded to students majoring in an agricultural eld, at least 10 will be awarded to students attending a technical school, and at least 10 will be awarded to current college or technical school students who are continuing their full-time education in 2017-2018. The remainder of the scholarships are open to all majors.

Previous United Cooperative scholarship award winners are not eligible to apply for the college or technical school continuing education awards.

Applicants will be judged on their leadership skills, scholastic achievement, extracurricular activities, motivation, and academic and personal goals.

To be eligible, the student or parent must be one of United Cooperative’s 16,000+ patron members; the student must plan to attend (or be currently enrolled in) an accredited college, university, or technical school; and the student must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or above on a 4.0 scale. Beginning in Ayrshires grant open for applications The Wisconsin Ayrshire Breeders’ Association (WABA) is proud to sponsor a farmer grant program, now in its second year! Wisconsin Beginning in Ayrshires Grant will help breeders establish themselves in this excellent breed.

The successful applicant will be awarded a $1,000 grant from WABA, which will be used to help purchase an Ayrshire.

The goal of this program is to show existing dairy producers the protability of Ayrshires in their milking herd. Ayrshire dairy cattle are a valuable asset to every dairy farm. They have many positive attributes that are protable for all types of operations, including: low somatic cell counts, higher pregnancy rates, trouble-free body composition, functional size, higher fat and protein percent, compete well in grazing and freestall set ups, and many other wonderful attributes.

Applicants for this grant can have owned Ayrshires in the past and be looking to expand their herd, or be a new breeder looking to buy their rst animal.

The successful applicant will be awarded a $1,000 grant from WABA. This money will be given as a certicate, which can be redeemed with the purchase of animals at the annual Wisconsin Ayrshire Spring Sale. This year the sale will be held on April 15, 2017, at the Clark County Fairgrounds in Neillsville, Wis. The winner of this grant will be also given a one year free membership to WABA, and assistance and information in the selection of their sale purchase.

The grant winner will be announced at the annual meeting in March. Their grant money will be given after successful purchase at the Wisconsin Ayrshire Spring Sale in April.

To qualify for the grant, a person must fulll these stipulations: actively engaged in farming; age 25 or older; interested in the Ayrshire breed; Wisconsin resident; complete and submit an application; provide two references, professional and personal; attend Wisconsin Ayrshire Spring Sale; past applicants are encouraged to reapply.
