Sharing a wealth of knowledge Buffalo-Trempealeau Farmer Network assembles to address water quality

PIGEON FALLS, Wis. – A group of western Wisconsin farmers are doing their part to address water quality. The Buffalo-Trempealeau Farmer Network was formed over the course of 2016 by uniting farmers in the Elk Creek and Waumandee Creek Watershed areas.

Together, these watershed groups have built a network of farmers to share information on ways to improve the water quality in their areas.

The organization is the result of an idea rst sparked by UW-Discovery Farms co-director Amber Radatz, and Joe Bragger, who milks 295 cows on his farm near Independence, Wis. “We were coming back from a UW-Discovery Farms meeting that had a session on farmer-led watershed grants,” Bragger said. “It was something we thought perhaps we could consider.”

Bragger and Radatz approached the Trempealeau and Buffalo Farm Bureaus to see if there was interest. Following an initial meeting in January 2016, Radatz said she was moved by the interest of the farmers.

“After that initial meeting, we saw the experiences these farmers had to share,” Radatz said. “From there it grew.”

The Elk Creek Watershed group in Trempealeau County chaired by Brian Maliszewski and the Waumandee Creek Watershed group in Buffalo County chaired by Don Baloun, were formed. Each individual group applied for the Wisconsin’s Producer-Led Watershed Protection Grant. Available through the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP), the grant program was designed to give nancial support to farmers willing to lead conservation efforts, with an emphasis on innovation and practices not already covered by state and federal programs.

Combined, the two watershed groups received $42,440 in grant funds to jumpstart their efforts and begin in April.

Bragger said he hopes their efforts make the group self-sustaining.

Having received funding and assembled a group of members, the watershed groups have worked together to form the Buffalo-Trempealeau Farmer Network. In addition to meeting on a regular basis, the network has provided roadside signage, developed a cover crop test plot and hosted a winter farmer forum Jan. 13.

The response has been astounding.

“The winter farmer forum focused mostly on soil health and cover crops.

We had speakers from both in and out of state, as well as a farmer panel,” Radatz said. “We had 104 people attend.”

The goal of the organization is for farmers to share conservation ideas of what is working on their farms and how it could benet others. Bragger said the group is important to the area given the environmental challenges they face as farmers.

“We have a strong history of conservation in this area. These two watersheds are similar in that the farmers surrounding them are focused on the environmental impact of their crops. The Elk Creek group works to prevent nitrogen runoff, while in Buffalo County, we have many steep hills, which makes cover cropping and erosion prevention our focus,” Bragger said.

While the network is entirely com-

posed of farmers, it has also allowed those farmers to build relationships with professionals as well.

“Relationships have been built between farmers and with agencies. They are having real conversations; they are real people all headed in the same direction,” Bragger said.

Although the network has already accomplished a great amount in its infancy stages, Radatz hopes the coming year will grow the network’s efforts.

“In the spring, we are hoping to hold a conservation recognition banquet to recognize the outstanding efforts of farmers in the area. We plan to do a test plot eld day, regular meetings and another winter forum,” Radatz said.

“We also look forward to incorporating more people in the network.”

Continuous improvement Jer-Lindy Farms named 2017 Innovative Dairy Farmer of the Year

BROOTEN, Minn. – Jerry and Linda Jennissen started Jer-Lindy Farms in 1983 with a goal of providing quality and diverse goods to the surrounding rural community, and 34 years later, they’ve been recognized for the innovative means they’ve used to achieve that goal.

This spring, the International Dairy Foods Association and Dairy Herd Management Magazine will recognize JerLindy Farms as the 2017 Innovative Dairy Farmer of the Year. The award recognizes U.S. dairy producers who apply creativity, excellence and forward thinking to achieve greater on-farm productivity and improved milk marketing.

The organization awarded Jer-Lindy Farms in part due to their innovative efforts to expand and keep younger family members engaged in the farm operations. In 2014, Jer-Lindy Farms expanded to include Redhead Creamery, a farmstead creamery operated by their daughter, Alise, and her husband, Lucas.

“There are artisanal cheese plants all over the world, but to this area it’s a fairly new concept,” Linda said. “There’s one other farmstead cheese plant in the area.”

A farmstead plant specically means that a product is produced on the same prop-

erty where it is harvested, so a farmstead creamery both milks cows and produces cheese at the same location.

“We didn’t just add the cheese operation [Redhead Creamery], it’s also an event center,” Jerry said. “Linda is a chef. We have a restaurant license and a liquor license. We have events here, we do farm tours and agritourism along with it, but the cheese plant is the main part of it. I think they decided it was innovative partially because of the whole picture.”

Jerry explained most farms just add more cows when a new generation joins the family business, but Jer-Lindy was more interested in creating a different farm rather than just a larger one.

Aside from bringing their daughter into the fold, JerLindy Farms was recognized for how they engage youth in agriculture. The family hopes for more diversication of the business with future generations of employees as well.

“We also have younger employees that are really gaining a lot of interest in agriculture,” Alise said. “One kid was starting when I rst moved home, he had no agriculture background at all and now he’s going to school for ag engineering. I think we’ve helped him gain a lot of fun interest in what agriculture can provide.

Jer-Lindy Farms also provides local agricultural outreach by offering weekly tours of the farm and hosting an annual children’s book fair at the farm.

Sustainability Another signicant factor that helped the Jennissens earn this year’s award was their continued efforts to initiate several sustainability procedures, and be good stewards of the land and its animals.

“The people who run the sustainability board say there are three legs to sustainability: social, environmental and economic,” Jerry said. “Our goal is to fulll all three of those.”

Socially, Jer-Lindy and Redhead Creamery has breathed new life into the local dairy community, cementing their role as innovators.

ple and being able to support people in a rural community has social benets to our rural communities,” Jerry said. “You can’t do that if you can’t make it economically feasible — and you can’t keep your farm running if you’re not environmentally sensitive, so we try to do all three of those.”

Jerry said the farm’s biggest obstacle in achieving these awards was simply surviving as a business.

“We started just as the 1980s farm crisis was beginning, so getting through that and still being able to be in agriculture was one of the greatest challenges we faced,” Jerry said. “One of the reasons I think they gave us that award was because we took on a project to try and make an anaerobic digester work on a small farm. The economic costs of trying to do that threatened our business again … so from

an economic standpoint those were our greatest challenges since we’ve started.”

Linda also pointed out the risk the company took in expanding the business with Redhead Creamery by introducing a new product to the region.

“Introducing the people of this area to a new product was a big challenge,” she said.

“They’re used to Kraft singles — and no discredit to Kraft, there’s a place for every kind of food, but it’s a totally different taste and appeal. So being able to market to the people was a big challenge, but [Alise and Lucas] excelled.”

As for future changes, the Jennissens said Redhead Creamery is looking into producing butter later this year, and the business as a whole is always looking to evolve and be a dynamic force in the local agriculture community.

“We’re always trying to get better,” Alise said.

Radatz agreed and added that the voluntary nature of farmers’ participation has aided in the network’s success thus far. “We have just let this group develop naturally. There are people involved who didn’t predict them to be as involved as they are, but they are all adding to these discussions,� Radatz said.

Bragger said he is proud of the efforts of the farmers in the area in making the network successful. “It is not easy to get up in front of a group of farmers, especially if some are your neighbors, and share what did or didn’t work for you,�

Four-step transition Organic certication explained at conference

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Mary Capehart and Trish Dougherty drew a crowd for their seminar, “Transitioning livestock to organic certication,” at the Minnesota Organic Conference Jan. 13, in St. Cloud, Minn.

Capehart and Dougherty are certication specialists with CROPP Cooperative and Oregon Tilth, respectively.

Producers came with inquiries regarding organic certication, and both presenters discussed the process with four questions to consider before beginning the transition to organic.

When should you choose a certier?

To maximize the resources available through a certier, both Dougherty and Capehart suggest speaking with a certifying agent at the start of the transition process.

“You will be starting the most important relationship to your dairy,” Capehart said. “You can’t start this conversation soon enough.”

When choosing a certier, producers should ask neighboring farms for recommendations and begin an interview process with prospects.

“Whom are other farmers working with? Are they happy with the relationship? Is the certier easy to get ahold of?” Dougherty said. “Some [certiers] are stronger in certain scopes of the certication process and may know your region and operation better than others.”

Once a certier is chosen, look to that person as a mentor for ling transition and certication applications.

While a transitional certication is not necessary to reach organic status, the paperwork demonstrates practices on the farm are following organic guidelines.

“Value is added to your operation and products,” said Capehart of the transitional certication. “Although the practice is not yet certied, it shows that the intention is there.”

A certier will also help schedule an inspection in a timely fashion aligned with the application due date in May. “Have an inspection lined up the year you Mary Capehart transition into orCROPP Cooperative ganic production,” Dougherty said.

“Don’t wait until April to submit the application and schedule an inspection. Get it all put together at the rst of the year.”

Before dairy animals can begin the process of organic certication, producers must rst be in the nal year of transitioning their land

and only growing organic crops on the soon-to-be certied acreage.

A 12-month transition period may begin at any time of the year, but is dependent on when the land and crops on the dairy entered into transition.

“A eld meets organic qualications after three years from the start date of transitioning,” Capehart said.

As land enters the nal year, only organic crops are grown and harvested, allowing the livestock transition to begin.

In recent years, genetically modied alfalfa has surfaced, resulting in elds being plowed under before they can be certied in the third year.

“There are more [genetically modied] products available and this is going to become a growing concern, or something to be aware of,” Dougherty said.

Dairy animals must be fed threeyear transitional feed and then certied organic feed every year after.

To help with this transition, a costshare program is available through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for the third year and every subsequent certication year.

“Producers can receive up to 75 percent of the certication costs back,” Dougherty said.

“We want to work with a proactive approach, but use a natural product if we have to be reactive,” Capehart said.

Dougherty agreed.

“Bottom line is that synthetics can’t be used,” she said.

As the organic industry develops, the list of acceptable products on the farm continues to grow. Every ve years, the USDA updates their list of approved products for use in organic production.

While antibiotics are not allowed as a management tool for organic farms, they are acceptable as a last resort to cure an ill animal. But once that animal receives antibiotics, they must be removed from production.

“As an organic producer, we must do all preventative things before bringing out the big guns,” Dougherty said.

When do you start record keeping and what should you keep?

To be in compliance with organic regulations, producers must accurately record products used, both natural and synthetic, animals treated and vaccinated, and other farm data.

If the records are not available at the time of inspection, it is as if the practice did not occur, stressed Capehart.

“As with any system, record keeping is only as good as the ones that will work,” she said.

Producers are encouraged to use a calendar, notebook, phone calendar or form of electronic application to accurately record actions on the farm. Any type of record system can be used as long as the certier clearly understands the producer’s system.

Both Dougherty and Capehart encouraged producers to nd value in record keeping to better their business as records clearly demonstrate progress and potential.

“We hope that farmers could get the same joy in record keeping as they do being outside,” Dougherty said. “We’re good farmers and record keeping can show that.”

Choosing to transition into organic production can be a simple process if producers are prepared.

“With the right management approach to all aspects of the transition, cows will respond on day one, not just the last 12 months,” Dougherty said.

“Remember that the transition to organic farming is a three-legged stool – including yourself, crops and the animals.”

An alternative option for loans

FSA expands eligibility for project funding

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – More nancing opportunities are available for dairy producers than in years past through the United States Department of AgricultureFarm Service Agency (FSA).

At the Minnesota Organic Conference in St. Cloud, Minn., Jan. 13, Jerry Hurrle and Angela Hanson, with FSA, spoke of the different funding options to meet the needs of producers.

“Our purpose is to provide a line of credit when none is available,” Hurrle said. “This may be when milk prices are low, you need to ght a disease or outbreak on the farm, or even transitioning the farm. There are many different reasons.”

Most recently revised on the list of loan options includes farm storage facility loans (FSFL), which provide low-interest nancing for building or upgrading commodity storage facilities on the farm.

“FSFL is for those making changes and expansions for the available equipment within the loan,” Hanson said. “Unlike other FSA loans, producers can apply

for this loan without needing a disapproval letter from another credit agency.”

Previously, only grain, hay and limited cold storage qualied for the loan.

However, in 2016, the loan parameters expanded to include storage for dairy products and hanging meat carcasses.

Now, bulk tanks, cold storage buildings, refrigerators and freezers, and foodsafety-related equipment for processing milk and other dairy products are eligible for a FSFL, among many other items.

“This loan is not available for purchased commodities, only commodities produced on the farm,” Hanson said.

The loan does not include temporary structures or structures for commercial purposes.

“Structures not suitable for the storage loan include livestock pens, milking parlors, robots … only the bulk tank and items used for cleaning the tank,” Hanson said. “Only equipment qualies. Producers must show the need for the equipment and the commodity produced.”

While some discrepancies arise with the loan’s qualications, FSA is continually working to provide nancial options for all producers and altering the loan program in order to do so.

“We’re learning with our national ofce in order to meet people’s needs,” Hanson said. “It’s not perfect, yet, but it’s

giving more people more exibility [for nancing] with adequate funding available throughout the year.”

Producers may apply for nancing up to $500,000, with a minimum down payment of 15 percent and no aggregate maximum. There is also a microloan FSFL for producers requesting less than $50,000, with a lesser amount required for a down payment.

“The microloan is particularly popular with new farmers or small farmers,” Hanson said. “This provides quick nancing for small operations. It’s received a positive response and good reports in Minnesota.”

However, prior to a producer receiving the loan, let alone beginning construction or installment if they intend on using a FSFL, county and state committees must approve the structure.

“If you start the process before approval, it could jeopardize your ability to get the loan,” Hanson said. “Talk to those people sooner rather than later.”

As with all FSA loans, FSFL projects must meet environmental standards.

Producers are eligible for any FSA loan – FSFL, operating, ownership, guaranteed, youth, microloan, and minority and women farmers – if they are adequately trained in the farm’s operations, own the operation and, in most cases,

have received denial from another lender.

As the loan is processed, FSA agents are expecting to see a business plan for the dairy.

“We need to know where the business is going and what you want to do and how we are going to be able to assist in that,” Hurrle said.

However, available funding and rates for each loan vary on the time of year and demand.

In January, FSA offered operating loans with a xed rate of 2.375 percent.

“Because FSA is a government program, there are limited funds available,” Hurrle said. “This year, we’re on target to run out. It’s important to get started as early as possible.”

Both Hurrle and Hanson encouraged producers to create a relationship with their local FSA agent. In doing so, agents are able to better facilitate an application process – understanding the producer’s situation and which loan program would best t their needs.

“Have conversations with your local FSA agent to make the application process simpler,” Hanson said. “There is a lot of opportunity through FSA.” Hurrle agreed.

“Our goal is to help you be protable with your operation.”

I-29 Moo University holds workshops Robots, activity monitors among topics discussed

“Hot Topics for Cold Days” was the name of a series of winter workshops conducted recently by I-29 Moo University. The workshops were held Jan. 16-20 in ve locations including Jamestown, N.D.; Watertown, S.D.; Pipestone, Minn.; Orange City, Iowa and Norfolk, Neb. I-29 Moo University is a collaboration of dairy extension faculty and industry partners. Participating universities include South Dakota State University, Iowa State University, North Dakota State University, University of Minnesota and University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Two topics for dairy producers included, “Finances and Returns for Robotic Dairies,” by Jim Salfer of UMN; and “Ruminating on Behaviors/Activity Monitors,” by Dr. Leo Timms of ISU. At the start of his presentation, Salfer, regional extension educator at UMN-St. Cloud, said, “There are an estimated 35,000 robotic milking systems (RMS) currently in use worldwide. Sales of RMS are growing rapidly, with a 14 percent increase in

sales last year.”

Salfer began to research RMS in 2008, after he attended an open house for a new robotic milking facility.

Some 1,500 people showed up for the event.

“I knew that there was a lot of interest when I saw the size of that crowd,” Salfer said.

Salfer told the gathering that an improved lifestyle is the top reason dairy farmers in the United States list when choosing to install a RMS. An RMS also provides the dairy opJim Salfer erator with reams U of M Extension of valuable data and has a consistent milking routine. But adding an RMS to a dairy operation is not without its challenges.

“An RMS requires a higher level of skills in the workforce,” Salfer said.

“Language barriers can also be an issue if the farm employs Hispanic labor.”

Regarding the cost/value quotient of an RMS, Salfer said, “The perception is that an RMS is expensive. But expensive compared to what? The most expensive milking system, from a labor point of view, would be to milk by hand. You have to look beyond the initial investment.”

Salfer said robotic systems are a tool smaller dairies often consider when they want to expand. Future la-

bor availability and labor quality are among the many factors that must be considered before making this decision.

“Conventional parlor system dairies have greater margins than robot dairies,” Salfer said. “But based on the returns per full-time employee, robot dairies have the advantage over conventional dairies. Future wage ination is less of an issue in an RMS than in a conventional parlor system.”

There are also some factors which can’t easily be quantied.

“On a conventional dairy that milks three times, a cow might spend three hours a day in the holding pen or in a breezeway,” Salfer said. “This is time she could otherwise spend eating or ruminating. And an RMS saves labor that the operator can use to do things that will increase prot, such as reproduction management or feed bunk management. We tend to undervalue the palatability and the consistency of the feed bunk. And the exibility afforded by an RMS can enable the operator to do things in a more timely manner, such as putting up hay.”

Another way robots can boost protability is by increasing milk production.

“An RMS would need a 6-10 pound increase in daily milk production to pay for itself,” Salfer said. “Operators need to maximize the number of pounds of milk per robot. One of the ways to do this is to fetch the fresh animals more often, especially the fresh heifers. If a cow is milked fewer

times per day when she is fresh, it will have a negative effect on the entire lactation.”

Salfer summarized his talk by stating that robotic systems can be protable if properly managed.

“A robotic milking system can enable a dairy operator to trade manual labor for more productive management labor,” Salfer said.

The University of Minnesota has launched an online robot vs. parlor tool to help farmers decide if robots t their operation. “The accelerometer was rst patented in 1963,” Timms said. “This technology has continued to advance and evolve. Accelerometers can now be found in everything from aircraft to satellites to the cell phone in your pocket to the Fitbit on your wrist.”

Accelerometers were the basis for the rst activity monitors used on dairy cows.

“Newborn calves are most active when they are fed their milk replacer, which could falsely indicate that they are ruminating,” Timms said. “But as calves get older, their behavior patterns become more predictable and an activity monitor can help detect calves that have gone off feed or have experienced a drop in their ear temperatures.”

Midwestern cheesemakers report an abundance of milk

The January 17 Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction reversed the direction again. The weighted average for all products offered inched up 0.6 percent, following a drop of 3.9 percent on January 3 and 0.5 percent on December 20.

Buttermilk powder led the declines, down 10.1 percent, after leading the gains on December 3 with a 4.5 percent increase. Skim milk powder was down 1.6 percent, following a gain of 2.3 percent, and whole milk power was off 0.1 percent after a 7.7 percent plunge last time.

Anhydrous milkfat was up 3.7 percent after inching 0.6 percent lower last time. Butter was up 1.6 percent after inching 0.5 percent higher, and Cheddar cheese was up 1.3 percent after a 1.4 percent rise last time.

FC Stone equated the average GDT butter price to $2.0098 per pound U.S. topping $2 for the rst time since February 2014. CME butter closed Friday at $2.25 per pound. GDT Cheddar cheese equated to about $1.7872 per pound U.S. and compares to Friday’s CME block Cheddar at $1.6975. GDT skim milk powder hit $1.1848 per pound and whole milk powder averaged $1.4890 per pound U.S. CME Grade A nonfat dry milk price closed Friday at $1.0050.

U.S. dairy cow culling was up from November but down from a year ago, according to USDA’s latest Livestock Slaughter report. An estimated 253,000 head were slaughtered under Federal inspection in December, up 9,800 head or 4.0 percent from November but 2,400 head or 0.9 percent below December 2015. Culling in the January to December period totaled 2,885,700 head, down 29,300 head from 2015.

Cash cheese prices were down, butter was up in the Martin Luther King Day holiday shortened Week.

Block Cheddar closed Friday Inauguration Day at $1.6975 per pound, down 2 3/4-cents on the week but 23 3/4-cents above a year ago. The barrels nished at $1.5350, down 10 1/2-cents on the week, 10 1/2-cents above a year ago, but at a huge 16 1/4-cent decit to the blocks. Eighteen cars of block traded hands on the week at the CME and 19 of barrel.

Midwestern cheesemakers reported an abundance of milk the week of January 16, according to Dairy Market News (DMN), and that meant “fully active production,” according to DMN. “After last week’s reports of relatively strong cheese demand, this week’s reports were mixed. Some producers were seeing an expected slowdown following the heavy demand at the end of 2016. Other Midwestern cheese producers are receiving more orders now than this time last year and expect increasing demand in the weeks to come.”

Western cheese makers report steady and seasonal domestic demand for blocks, but lower calls for bar-

rels. Cheese output is active with plenty of milk available. Mozzarella and packaged retail cheese production are ramping up a little in advance of Super Bowl.

Barrel inventories are long and supplies of blocks are growing as sales descend from the pre-holiday peak, according to DMN. Cash butter closed the week at $2.25 per pound, up 2 1/2-cents, and 8 cents above a year ago, with only three carloads sold on the week at the CME. Central butter producers report readily available cream again this week, says DMN. “Cream supplies are ample across the U.S., as Midwestern butter makers are receiving offers from East and West suppliers. Butter demand is a bit lower now than this time last year, but expected to strengthen in the upcoming weeks.”

Western butter output is following typical seasonal patterns. Cream is in good supply and keeping churns running at a steady pace. Manufacturers report some of the strong demand for milkfat and butter in Fourth Quarter 2016 has carried forward into 2017 and are “a little surprised with the solid domestic sales.”

Spot Grade A nonfat dry milk closed Friday at $1.0050 per pound, down 2 3/4-cents on the week but 26 1/4-cents above a year ago, with 13 cars sold.

The Daily Dairy Report’s Sarina Sharp wrote in the January 13 Milk Producer Council newsletter that “Milk powder demand is solid, but inventories are growing. Europe’s mountain of powder continues to weigh, both psychologically and monetarily. The European Commission received bids for 26.3 million pounds of the skim milk powder (SMP) in its Intervention stockpile last week. It rejected all of them because they were “too far from the prevailing market price and the minimum selling prices set at the previous tender.”

It was announced January 19 that, just as in the previous tender, all bids were rejected because the bids were not high enough. But, FC Stone’s Dave Kurzawski reported that the EU also mandated that “In the light of the tenders received for the third partial invitation to tender, a minimum selling price should not be xed”. He says that “The EU Commission intends to hold two tenders per month until all of the allocated volume (put into the scheme before November 1, 2015) has been sold.”

The January 13 Dairy and Food Market Analyst (DFMA) added a consideration in the powder market writing; “Currency is still a headwind to this market.

The Mexican Peso hit a more-than-10-year low versus the US Dollar this week. The US Dollar is up 22 percent year over year (YoY) against that currency, which makes nonfat dry milk prices 71 percent higher YoY for Mexican buyers.”

The DFMA also offered an interesting perspective

on cheese, reporting that Domino’s Pizza told investors recently that “The largest growth prospects for this cheese-friendly business are outside the USA.” “Domino’s has about 13,200 restaurants, and more than half of its sales (51 percent) are from international stores,” the DFMA stated. “Over the last ve years, Domino’s opened 2,908 restaurants outside of the USA. For comparison, Pizza Hut added 2,429 restaurants in foreign countries and Papa John’s, 796.

Surprisingly, Dominos expects developed economies to provide most of its growth,” according to the DFMA. And, speaking of currency concerns and the global market, USDA’s January 19 Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Outlook warned that “The U.S. is expected to face strong competition from the EU for cheese exports in 2017. After a setback in 2014 and 2015 due to a Russian trade ban, EU cheese exports are expected to total 1.808 billion pounds in 2016 and are forecast to reach a record 1.819 billion pounds in 2017. A key issue facing the United States” export competitiveness with the EU is the strong dollar compared to the euro,” the Outlook said.

Back home, dairy margins started the year at, as higher trade in both milk and feed largely offset each other, according to the latest Margin Watch (MW) from Chicago-based Commodity & Ingredient Hedging LLC. “Margins remain at above the 90th percentile of the previous decade through the rst half of 2017 and well above the 80th percentile through the second half of the year,” the MW stated. “Protein prices have spiked recently, as heavy recent rainfall in Argentina has led to sharply higher trade in soybean meal. As that country is the largest global exporter of soybean meal, there is concern that reduced Argentine production this season might lead to increased U.S. exports to meet world demand. Corn prices are likewise rm as USDA slightly reduced the size of the U.S. corn crop in the January World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimate report on lower yields, with ending stocks down as result.”

“USDA raised their 2017 production forecast by 300 million pounds to a record 217.1 billion; however, they also noted some signicant price increases for all dairy products and both milk classes due to strong demand,” the MW stated.

The Agriculture Department announced the February Federal order Class I base milk price at $16.73 per hundredweight, down 72 cents from January but $3.09 above February 2016. The two month average is at $17.09, up from $14.84 at this time a year ago and compares to $17.41 in 2015.

Fluid milk consumption crept a little higher in November, following a 3.5 percent slide in October.

November packaged uid milk sales totaled 4.18 billion pounds, up 0.4 percent from November 2015, according to DMN. Conventional product sales totaled 3.96 billion pounds, down 0.2 percent from a year ago; organic products, at 222 million pounds, were up 11.6 percent. Organic represented about 5.3 percent of total sales for the month.

Whole milk sales totaled 1.2 billion pounds, up 5.4 percent from a year ago, with year to date running 4.7 percent above a year ago and making up 29.3 percent of total uid sales. Skim milk sales were down 11.2 percent from a year ago and down 11.3 percent year to date.

Total packaged uid milk sales for the 11 months of 2016 totaled 44.8 billion pounds, down 0.7 percent from the same period a year ago.

Year-to-date sales of conventional products, at 42.5 billion pounds, were down 1.0 percent; organic products, at 2.4 billion pounds, were up 6 percent.

Organic represented about 5.3 percent of total uid milk sales thus far in 2016.

USDA’s latest commercial disappearance data shows strong dairy demand for November. American cheese was up 9.7 percent from a year ago and up 5.8 percent from October. Total cheese use was up 6.1 percent from a year ago and 3.7 percent above October. Nonfat dry milk use jumped 23.6 percent in November and butter demand was up 5.3 percent from a year ago.

FC Stone’s Dave Kurzawski pointed out in his January 13 Insider Closing Bell that “So far in 2016, milk use is growing at a better clip than milk production. Through November, total milk use is 2.2 percent higher on a total solids basis versus a 1.4 percent increase in milk production (milk output through October 2016).” He adds that “It should be noted that milk production in November and December will likely close the gap somewhat. And it should be noted that these numbers don’t automatically mean ‘bullish’. Milk production actually exceeded total milk solids use as detailed by USDA in 2014 and we all know what happened that year. But the numbers afrm really nice 2016 holiday demand.”

President Elect Donald Trump has become President Trump and, as hearings began on Capitol Hill on appointees to his cabinet, it was announced that former Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue is his pick for Agriculture Secretary.

The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) praised Trump’s choice, stating that “America’s dairy farmers are looking forward to working with Secretary of Agriculture-designate Sonny Perdue, whose role as the chief advocate for farmers and rural America is absolutely crucial in the new Trump Administration, especially when milk prices have been in a prolonged slump.”

“Former Gov. Perdue is well-qualied to run the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a result of his eight years of executive experience as Georgia’s governor and his career as a state legislator and small businessman,” NMPF wrote. “His educational training as a veterinarian also gives him unique insights into the important issues facing America’s livestock producers in the areas of animal health, food safety and the environment.”

NMPF said it would “seek to collaborate with Secretary Perdue on ways to strengthen the safety net for dairy farmers, relieve regulatory burdens and enhance opportunities to keep and grow markets abroad for our dairy exports.”

The International Dairy Foods Association pres-

ident and CEO, Michael Dykes, himself a veterinarian, stated that IDFA and its members “look forward to working closely with Perdue who will oversee many areas that are extremely important to the dairy industry, including the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the school breakfast and lunch programs, and, most recently, the national disclosure standard for foods made with genetically modied ingredients.”

Perdue replaces Tom Vilsack who became President and CEO of the U.S. Dairy Export Council. Vilsack succeeds Tom Suber, who served as president since its founding in 1995 and retired at the end of 2016.

The new President and Agriculture Secretary will be called upon to “correct price inequities facing all dairy farmers,” charged Arden Tewksbury, Manager of the Progressive Agriculture Organization (Pro-Ag) and the National Family Farm Coalition (NFFC).

Tewksbury stated in a press release; “Presently we are talking with several farm organizations trying to support the organizations that are gearing up

to petition the Secretary of Agriculture to conduct a national hearing to address the serious problems that the majority of dairy farmers are facing. We believe that current emergency situations must be addressed as well as a new pricing formula must be developed that consider the dairy farmers’ cost of production.”

He charged that “The last Congress eliminated many actions the Secretary of Agriculture could use, including eliminating the Dairy Price Support program and the MILC program. The last Farm Bill also states that the USDA cannot implement any form of milk supply management program. But what Congress did do was provide the ill-fated Margin Insurance Program which has turned out to be a asco as we predicted.”

Cooperative Working Together (CWT) accepted its rst two requests for export assistance from member cooperatives of 2017 to sell 51,809 pounds of Cheddar cheese, and 220,462 pounds of butter to customers in Asia and the Middle East. The product has been contracted for delivery through April.

Today marks the Àrst day of electronic trading in the spot dairy product markets at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME). The CME is transitioning its open outcry cash butter, cheese, and nonfat dry milk (NDM) markets to an electronic, transaction- based auction. After a seven-week delay, the NDM spot call traded electronically for the Àrst time today. The NDM spot call trading session is available to customers and market participants through the CME Direct Auction Platform from 11:30 to 11:40 a.m. (Central). In addition, the trading times for CME spot cheese and butter are changed to 10:45 to 10:55 a.m. and from 11 to 11:10 a.m., respectively. The CME Group expects to transition the spot dairy markets in three phases, with electronic cash butter trading following NDM and electronic cash cheese trading the Ànal phase.

Still, the current level of milk powder imports remains stunted relative to the pace set in 2013 and 2014. In December 2016, China imported 17.3 million pounds of cheese, 6.9% more than the prior year.

2016 cheese imports soared 28% above 2015 levels to reach the highest totals on record. In 2015, China was the seventh largest cheese importer, according to Global Trade Atlas data. In 2016, China’s imports could be very close to rivaling Australia’s imports, potentially moving China into the sixth spot but likely securing its seventh position once again.

While year-to-date 2016 milk production through November from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Europe, New Zealand, and the United States trails 2015 by 0.5%, it is still 0.73% ahead of 2014 and 5.4% more than the same period in 2013.

A family affair Paakkari becomes fourth generation on dairy

his family grow their own forages, including fescue, timothy and clover grasses.

However, Paakkari purchases additional feedstuffs, such as barley or oats and rapeseed for a protein source if it is expected his elds will not yield enough.

“We do grow barley and oats with our grasses, and the neighboring farms also grow wheat, rye, rapeseed and broad bean,” Paakkari said.

Many of the 280,000-plus cows in Finland are found in the northern region of the country.

Located less than 200 miles below the Arctic Circle, Paakkari and four other neighboring producers are a part of the most northern form of agriculture in the world and live in a climate preferable for crop and livestock production.

“We are in a strong economic area for raising cattle,” Paakkari said. “The further you go out, the more beef and crop farmers there are.”

Temperatures can range from a high of 86 degrees to a low of negative 31 degrees Fahrenheit.

“This also brings positive aspects,” Paakkari said.

RUUKKI, Northern Ostrobothnia, Finland – For Tauno Paakkari, home is where his family and cows are.

Stepping into farm ownership after his parents retired from the industry, Paakkari milks 50 cows with his ancé, Arja, two daughters – Sara and Jenna – and brother, Eino, and his ancé, near the village of Ruukki, Northern Ostrobothnia, Finland.

“Arja and I started up the farm again in 2015,” said Paakkari, a fourth-generation farmer. “We both had other jobs, but the cows always drew us back to the farm.”

Paakkari’s mother’s ancestors started the dairy in 1926, and then, in 2003, after her passing, Paakkari’s father carried on the family business.

“It seemed natural to continue the work of previous generations,” Paakkari said.

Now, the Finnish family begins their days at 6 a.m., milking the Holstein and Ayrshire herd in a stanchion barn.

Paakkari’s brother uses nine milking units and is able to complete the chore within a couple hours.

The same is true for animal diseases.

“Clean water is never an issue to contemplate,” Paakkari said. “Tap water is always drinkable for animals, and even humans.”

With these benets of the region, Paakkari has minimal trouble with mastitis or other health issues within his herd and currently holds a somatic cell count of 76,000.

“Our breeding plan has long sought to emphasize animal health and structure, also taking into account pounds of milk,” Paakkari said. “Although breeding bulls are not common on Finnish dairies, we breed for bulls, too, and house them in separate pens.”

Paakkari’s young herd has a rolling herd average of 19,700 pounds, with each animal producing roughly 70 pounds each day.

“Milk production is our thing, but something that should be further along,” Paakkari said. “It’s what we’ve focused on and where we can grow.”

Paakkari is a member of a cooperative, one of 18 cooperatives that own Valio – the country’s largest milk processor. While the processor is known for a variety of dairy products, Paakkari’s milk is sold for cheese production.

“Our cows’ milk is produced for an aged Oltermanni cheese, which is sold in most of the stores in Finland,” Paakkari said.

Finnish producers are receiving $16.28 per hundredweight (€0.35 per kilogram), with the price varying some depending on milk quality and components in milk.

different with pricing, but the processor gives the same price regardless of the distance the milk travels,” Paakkari said.

For Paakkari, the income generated from milk production is not enough to support his family. He must also contract small-scale machinery work with area farmers.

With the average Finnish producer milking 35 to 50 cows, Paakkari is one of many who need additional income.

“Because of this, I think the average farm size will increase in the near future,” Paakkari said. “There are a lot of dairy farms joining and becoming one.”

The ability to grow the industry in Finland is feasible with a strong infrastructure.

“There are at least ve [milking machine] service companies within one hour of driving from our farm,” Paakkari said.

However, the export market could create an obstacle for that growth with Russia’s embargo on imports and China’s demand for lactose-free dairy products.

Regardless of the challenges, Paakkari and his family are looking forward in the industry, with the possibility of installing robots.

Every week, the family and employees gather to review the farm’s current management practices and discuss ways to improve for the future – whether that be adding newer technologies or simply changing protocols.

“We always need to be creating new ideas to continue dairying,” Paakkari said. “As a family, that’s important to us.”

Glendes value registered Holstein herd, use for extra income

ALTURA, Minn. – When the Glendes make a mating decision, they evaluate each cow carefully.

“We’re trying to get that homerun – a high genomic testing animal,” Ben Glende said.

Ben is working as the fourth generation on his family’s farm, Glen-D-Haven, run by his parents, Jackie and Paul, near Altura, Minn.

Although their goal has always been to produce a large amount of high quality milk, they also make genetics a priority in their 160-cow registered Holstein herd.

Jackie spurred the idea to get into the registered business when she and Paul were married and started farming 32 years ago.

“Paul and I were trying to stay small, but get better animals. We thought maybe

So he came back to join the dairy eight years ago at the age of 20. Since then he’s been slowly buying into the farm.

Knowing that Ben wanted to return, the Glendes started making plans to update their facilities. The 100-year-old tiestall barn with 45 stalls was showing it’s wear.

“Paul and I didn’t know if we wanted to put money into a parlor if we didn’t have someone to farm with us, but then Ben came home,” Jackie said.

Weight Checks - How far we have come “Two years ago was the year Christmas was cancelled. Two years ago we received an early Christmas present, wrapped in pink. Two years ago, at this time we had many emotions.

We were thankful when Vivian and I could come home together after each of us needed to stay in the hospital for a week after her birth. Vivian was in the NICU to adjust to life, and I had to get my blood pressure low enough before I could finally go home.

We were scared because our baby was five weeks early. We felt Vivian was a pure miracle and continues to be. Weeks after Vivian’s birth, our world revolved around her weight.”

“We’re not even thinking about it, but we left the option open in case that’s what Ben wants to do,” Jackie said.

They now feel like their cows are more comfortable than ever, which helps their end goals in the long run.

Since Ben has been home, he works together with Paul and Jackie to make mating decisions. They also call on people within the industry to gather their input.

“Sometimes we’re told what [bulls] to use for contracts,” Ben said. “But Mom and Dad have built up some good connections over the 25 years in the registered business. We call those people.”

When breeding animals, the Glendes focus on a few traits. Production is No. 1, followed closely by fat and protein; however, they don’t ignore type.

“We like them to look nice, too. It’s no fun milking a donkey,” Jackie said.

The Glendes’ herd is housed in a sand bedded freestall barn they built in 2013.

Ben agreed.

“We like bigger, stronger cows,” he said.

The Glendes also tend to use young bulls that have high genomic numbers. In the past, Bolton and Goldwyn have produced good daughters for their herd. Currently, they are using bulls such as Bandares, Modesty, Desoto and Robson.

Finding a good mating is

a thrill to Jackie and one of her favorite parts of the business.

“I like being able to ush them and trying to get the genomic high one,” she said. “It gives you something more than just working your butt off every day. It makes farming more fun for me.”

In the future, Ben said he plans to focus on genetics and keep the herd the same

size or less.

“Maybe I’d go smaller and do it all myself. Good help is hard to nd,” Ben said about what he sees for the future of the farm. “But I like working with the cattle.

They’re big beautiful cows.”

But for now, the Glendes are happy where they’re at.

“I thank God every day for what he blesses us with,” Jackie said.

In February 2017, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will begin conducting the 2016 Certied Organic Survey to gather up-to-date data on certied organic crops and livestock in the United States. This special survey effort is critical to help determine the economic impact of certied organic agriculture production across the nation.

NASS is mailing the survey to all known certied organic farms. The form asks farmers to provide information on acreage, production, and sales for a variety of certied organic crop and livestock commodities. The agency urges all participants to respond by February 19. After this date, NASS will follow up by phone and personal interviews with those who have not responded. Producers can return their form by mail or complete the survey online at www.agcounts.usda.gov.

“Organic agriculture is a rapidly growing segment of the industry and Minnesota ranks among the top 10 states for both number of certied organic operations and total certied organic sales.

Last year, NASS reported that Minnesota’s certied organic farms sold a total of $92 million in organic products. Top organic commodities for Minnesota

The report, to be released September 2017, will also assist farmers, suppliers and others in the private sector in planning the production and marketing of new products to help sustain industry growth.

“NASS has a long-standing reputation for providing objective, accurate data about all aspects of U.S. agriculture, but the only way for us to provide accurate information is with farmers’ input,” added Lofthus. “I hope that all organic farmers who receive a survey form will recognize it as a way to benet their industry and take the time to respond.”

As with all NASS surveys, information provided by respondents is condential, as required by federal law. NASS safeguards the privacy of all responses and publishes only aggregate data, ensuring that no individual operation or producer can be identied.

Cream Cheese Bars 2 packages crescent rolls 1 cup sugar 1 egg yolk

1 tsp. vanilla 2 packages softened cream cheese

Lay one package of crescent rolls on the bottom of 9x13 ungreased pan. Mix rest of ingredients and spread over crescent rolls in pan. Then layer second package of crescent rolls on top. Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Easy Mexican Chicken 4 boneless chicken breasts 15 oz. jar of salsa 15 oz. can of corn, drained

15 oz. can black beans, drained 8 oz. package cream cheese

Pour salsa, corn and beans in the crock pot. Add whole pieces of chicken.

Cook on low for five hours. Add cream cheese the last hour. Stir together just before serving and the cream cheese becomes part of the sauce and the chicken falls apart. Serve over pasta or with rice or in tacos.

2 cups shredded cheddar cheese 2 cups milk 2 cups egg substitute 1 tsp. red or green hot pepper sauce 1/4 tsp. salt

Spray 8x8 pan with cooking spray. In a medium skillet over medium heat, melt butter and add mushrooms. Cook mushrooms about 5 minutes or until softened and brown at edges. Stir in green onion, set aside. Place half of the bread cubes in prepared baking dish. Scatter half of the mushroom mixture and half of the cheese over bread cubes. Layer remaining bread cubes and mushroom mixture, set aside. In a large bowl, beat milk, egg substitute, pepper sauce and salt until well-blended. Pour milk mixture over bread cubes and top with the remaining cheese. Make ahead suggestion: cover dish with foil and refrigerate for 8-10 hours before baking.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake covered for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes or until top is puffed up and cheese is browned at edges. Let cool for 5 minutes; cut into squares to serve. Makes 9 servings.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Pour ½ cup milk in small bowl. Add vinegar and let sit 5 minutes. Whisk in baking soda and eggs until frothy. Set aside.

In saucepan over medium heat, mix cocoa, 1/3 cup butter and 1 cup milk.

Whisk until butter is melted. Remove from heat. In a large bowl, mix flour and sugar. Pour in cocoa mixture and beat well. Pour in egg mixture and beat well.

Add vanilla and beat until smooth. Pour batter into a 13x9x2-inch baking pan coated with cooking spray. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until tests clean with a toothpick. Cool completely. For frosting, combine 4 tablespoons butter and 2 tablespoons milk in saucepan over medium heat. Whisk until melted.

Add in chocolate chips, stirring constantly until melted. Remove from heat.

Add powdered sugar and beat until frosting consistency (if too thick, thin with another teaspoon of milk.) Frost brownies and cut into 32-inch pieces. Makes 32 servings.
