Fire safety on the farm Prevention is the best form of protection

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – A re can be a farmer’s biggest fear. Yet, res are usually preventable, said Chris Schlechta, safety and loss control manager at Rural Mutual Insurance Company of Madison.

“There’s usually a laundry list of things that occur leading up to a re giving clues that such an incident might take place,” Schlechta said. “Fires are often predictable.”

In charge of re investigation and inspection, Schlechta has spent 22 years as a reghter both full time and currently as a volunteer. In his presentation, “Fire Safety on the Farm,” held at the sixth annual Agricultural Safety Connection seminar Jan. 7 in Stevens Point, Schlechta shared tips for preventing res on farms.

The leading cause of barn res is heating equipment, with heat lamps most commonly to blame. Next is electrical distribution and lighting equipment. Schlechta said one of the No. 1 aws he sees on farms are poorly connected electrical appliances and poorly connected outlets. Mobile equipment is another major source of barn res.

“Over the past two years, it seemed like every month we were getting a call for a re caused by a skid steer.”

and letting them cool for at least one hour before putting the machine away.

Parking just-used equipment inside by dust and other accumulation is a recipe for disaster. Smoke conditions are usually noticed within the rst hour after use.

“I even do this with my lawn mower,” Schlechta said. “I let it sit outside on the grass for an hour after using it before I put it back in the garage.”

Schlechta said basic housekeeping can help prevent skid steer res. Open up the back of the skid steer to see how much debris is accumulated and clean it on a regular basis. Do not clean right after running when the machine is hot.

Lighting is another re danger; therefore, ensure lights are housed in dust-tight, globed metal enclosures to prevent possible ignition sources around feed and bedding.

“If a light xture is struck and breaks allowing the element to fall on hay, it will create an instant re,” Schlechta said.

If using LED bulbs, make sure they are rated for enclosure and pendant orientation. Sealing in a bulb that should not be could also cause a re.

“Take time to put panels back on,” Schlechta said. “That’s live current sitting there. I’m surprised at the number of times I see electrocution injuries because the panel was open, and someone slipped and fell on it or dropped a tool into it.”

In another instance, one circuit had stopped running, so the farmer ran another circuit; then that one stopped working, so he ran a third. He had four different circuits running through the panel in different directions – all wired to something different. These are examples of res waiting to happen.

To prevent hay res, ensure proper moisture content ranges based on type of hay and baling method. Most res occur within six weeks of baling if moisture on the eld is upwards of 25%.

Bales should be periodically probed to test for above-normal temps. A heavy musty smell and excessive steam coming off hay are signs bales may be too hot. Hay that reaches 130 degrees Fahrenheit starts off-gassing, creating a spiral effect. If temps exceed 150 degrees, take steps to provide better air circulation. Pull out bales and move them around. If temperatures reach 175, re is imminent or already present, and you should call 911.

“You need the re department on hand before moving bales in that situation,” Schlechta said. “Don’t start ripping stuff apart, and never walk on top of hot bales. Fire could be developed inside bales, which creates a void space. And if you walk on it, you’re going to sink into that void space.”

Wood burners cause a tremendous amount of res – something Schlechta sees on a weekly basis. To avoid re, wood burners must be installed according to manufacturer’s instructions.

An outdoor wood burner requires a clearance distance of 25 feet to 50 feet from the building it serves and should be located at least 40 feet from fuel tanks. Under state law, an indoor wood burner or stove cannot be placed in a building storing mobile equipment or items that produce ammable vapor, like gasoline and kerosene.

“Make sure wood burners in the house are regularly cleaned and inspected,” Schlechta said. “These are real simple things to prevent res.

When wood burners are properly installed, and you burn nice clean wood in there, they work great.”

Appliances, whether in the house or barn, should be routinely inspected and maintained, especially dryers. Be sure to keep lint traps clean. One time, Schlechta was using a thermal imaging camera on a farm when he happened to notice a signicant hot spot.

“The panel was starting to melt inside because the dryer was running at

440 degrees,” Schlechta said. “I told the farmer he had to shut it down right away and get an electrician out here. Had this gone on for another half hour or hour, the dryer would’ve caught re.”

Tools like thermal imaging cameras can help farmers stay on top of re risks by picking up on hot spots. These cameras have gone down drastically in price over the last 20 years, and a quality handheld camera can now be purchased for $400.

Dead plant material can be highly ammable, needing only a spark to ignite. Keep vegetation at least 50 feet away from buildings and mow it down.

“The window in which a re department can get to a re and make a real difference has shrunk over the years,” Schlechta said.

By the time 911 is called, a re is already in the growth stage. By the time it is dispatched to the re department, ve to six minutes have gone by, and 10 minutes have typically elapsed by the time the rst retruck is out the door.

By this point, it could be a 50% loss.

The average response time in rural areas is around 16 minutes.

“By the time the re department shows up, you are well behind the eight ball,” Schlechta said. “This illustrates how brutally important prevention is.”

A little pre-planning can go a long way in helping farms lessen the impact of a re.

“Invite your local re department to tour your farm and show them where stuff is,” Schlechta said. “It’s your opportunity to educate so if there is ever a re on your farm, they know what to look for. This will help reghters understand the layout and give them working knowledge of buildings. They’ll also be able to map out any hazards in advance.”

Schlechta said, when planning a new site, consider multiple access routes to the property, separation of at least 100 feet between structures, and safe locations for fuel tanks and overhead wires.

Keep the right type and quantity of re extinguishers on hand in a logical location. Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on all equipment and stay up to date with housekeeping tasks.

When a small business, such as a farm, is lost to a catastrophe like re, the future outlook for that business is bleak. Of small businesses, 40% permanently close the day a signicant loss occurs. Of those that remain in business, 25% will fail within one year, and 90% fail within two years after being struck by disaster.

“These are staggering numbers,” Schlechta said. “Post-re odds are against you. That’s why we need to try to prevent these catastrophic losses in the rst place.”

Save calves with proper sanitation

Proctor shares six-step process for cleaning equipment

WELCH, Minn. – While managing a dairy, it is important not to overlook properly cleaning equipment, especially for youngstock.

“A newborn calf has a very immature immune system and can’t tolerate the number of pathogens in the environment that a mature animal can,” said Dr. Anne Proctor, nutrition and production specialist for Form-A-Feed Nutrition.

“We need to reduce the pathogen load to keep newborns from getting sick.

The way we do that is through good sanitation.”

Proctor presented, “Sanitation Saves Lives” Jan. 16 during the FormA-Feed Professional Dairy Conference in Welch.

Pathogens need moisture, a warm host, a nutrient source and an optimal pH to succeed. A newborn calf checks off all the necessary items, including an undeveloped immune system, for these pathogens to thrive. That is why it is important to clean and signicantly reduce the possibility of pathogens getting into a calf and making the calf sick, Proctor said.

“Exposure happens everywhere,” she said. “We do our best to keep the environment clean, but there’s always going to be some exposure.”

Proctor said if conditions are right,

bacteria in a calf barn can double every 20 minutes. She gave a visual example of how fast bacteria grows, starting with 1 gram of feed (one kernel of corn, two pellets and part of an oat) representing one bacteria organism. Within four hours, the bacteria would grow to be as much as a 50-pound bag. In less than nine hours, the bacteria would equal one semi load of feed.

“It’s staggering when you think of it that way,” Proctor said.

When cleaning calf feeding equipment, Proctor said it is important to think about the make-up of milk.

“The components of the milk are what make it difcult to clean,” she said.

While fat needs hot water to remove it from surfaces, heat bakes protein to the sides of surfaces. Both are components of milk. Calcium in milk also sticks to surfaces.

“If I use the hot water to get rid of the fat, I bake the protein to the side, but if I use the cool water to get the protein out, the fat will still be stuck on the side,” Proctor said. “It’s a bit of a dilemma.”

Biolms are another necessary reason for appropriate cleaning procedures.

“Once it grabs on, it secretes a sort of glue that coats itself with and sticks itself to the bucket,” Proctor said. “That makes it much harder for our detergents to get in there to kill that bug.”

“You can’t feel biolm,” Proctor said. “It’s microscopic. If you’re feeling a layer of slime, that’s fat.”

To prevent exposure to pathogens, Proctor shared a six-step proper wash-

ing procedure. The rst step is to rinse with warm water between 90 degrees and 100 degrees.

“We have to get the protein out of there,” she said.

The soaking allows time for the water to penetrate the bacteria on the sides. The moderately hot water helps with the fat and the chlorinated alkaline detergent addresses both the fat particles and pathogens that do not like a high pH. The third step is to scrub with hot water that is higher than 145 degrees with chlorinated detergent.

“We have to scrub to get those bacteria out of the cracks,” Proctor said.

“We have to try to physically break up some of that biolm so our chemicals can get into it.”

The fourth step is to rinse with warm water with a 50 parts per million chlorine dioxide solution. An acid rinse should also be done weekly.

“Acid is to try to break up the calcium,” Proctor said. “If you’ve got calcium stuck to the side of your bucket, that’s a perfect crevasse for bacteria to grab on.”

Drying is the fth step. It is important to allow airow around and inside because organisms need water.

“If you take the water away, you keep it from growing,” Proctor said.

“While we tend to worry about what sanitizer we’re using, the most important thing you can do is to clean that stuff properly...”

The sixth step is to sanitize with a spray that is 50 ppm chlorine dioxide just before use.

“Chlorine dioxide is a chemical that is very safe for calves and people,” Proctor said. “It’s used in human drinking water. At this concentration, you can spray it on the nipple and stick it in the calf’s mouth and there’s no negative factor. If you sanitize it just before it’s used, that’s one more layer of protection for our calves.”

Proctor said chlorine dioxide has been the preferred sanitizer in the calf industry for the past six years. She said

when compared to bleach, it has a shorter contact time, is active over a wider pH range, and kills a broader range of pathogens.

“Bleach has been our old standby for generations, but bleach doesn’t kill several of the organisms we’re worried about today in calf barns,” Proctor said.

“Crypto is the No. 1 issue bleach does not kill no matter how long you leave stuff in the bleach solution.”

Bleach is also inactivated by organic matter, such as milk or manure, and is more stable and permeates biolms, Proctor said.

“It has the ability to start to get into that glue,” she said.

Sanitizers only work on clean surfaces, Proctor said.

“You can’t sanitize something that’s dirty and kill the pathogens,” she said.

“It’s just not possible. While we tend to worry about what sanitizer we’re using, the most important thing you can do is to clean that stuff properly to get the milk, protein and calcium off the equipment before you worry about the sanitizer.”

In order to ensure a consistent washing protocol, Proctor said to make sure the area has the proper equipment, including a sink, brushes, rubber gloves and a drying rack. Have different brushes for pails, bottles, nipples and tube feeders.

“Yes, you need to scrub the inside of the nipple and the tube feeder,” Proctor said.

Temperature is also an important part of the process. Proctor showed a simple farmer-inspired way to monitor the water by placing a Styrofoam piece on a simple cooking thermometer to oat in the wash basin.

“Don’t let it drop below 150 degrees,” she said.

Rubber gloves are also an important piece of equipment.

“Yes, there’s a cost to keeping gloves, but in order to use hot enough water, you’ve got to have gloves,” Proctor said. “The water is too hot to put your hands in without gloves and those chemicals are not good for people’s skin.”

To know a sanitation protocol is working, Proctor said bacteria counts on equipment should be checked with a luminometer by an industry expert.

Keeping a proper cleaning protocol can be the difference between healthy and sick calves.

I joined 4-H so I could learn how to show cattle and enter projects at the fair. My goal as president of my chapter is to get kids interested in agriculture and participating in the many events it offers. My favorite activity is showing cattle at the fair. I raise beef cattle and dairy heifers.

I love training them, creating bonds with the animals and being responsible for them.

Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations.

My best experience is being an ofcer for all four years of high school. Throughout this time, I have had responsibilities of being a chairperson of a committee, organizing events, leading my chapter and participating in many contests. I know being an ofcer has strongly impacted me as a person. I have grown out of my shell and become more condent.

Participating in speaking contests has helped me speak throughout school events, extracurriculars and as a president. Being an ofcer has taught me how to work

with others on a team and many great skills I’ll use for the rest of my life. Participating in the FFA and 4-H art contests have helped me to get my name out there and showcase my artwork.

What is your favorite social media? Instagram. I like this social media because I use it as a scrapbook. I can post on my account and store pictures. I can also choose to keep things private. I also use the app as a way to display my artwork and share it with others. It is easy to navigate and helps me connect with the outside world.

What are your career aspirations? I am going to CVTC for my general courses, and then I am transferring to University of Wisconsin-Stout for graphic design. I hope to continue making artwork and selling it as side-business.

What is something you have learned from being involved in these activities/organizations?

You don’t have to be a farm kid to be involved. Although I live on a farm, I’m not going into an ag eld.

I can use my leadership skills, speaking, teamwork experience and organization learned through these organizations in my future.

It has helped make me a wellrounded person. I have also grown as a person, participating in community service, going outside my comfort zone, speaking in front of people, being responsible for animals and understanding the meaning of hard work. The biggest thing I’ve learned is standing behind the FFA’s statement of being,

Who do you look up to? My step-dad Sander Penterman.

From the rst day I met him, he has been kind and loving enough to take me as his own. At a young age, he taught me how to work hard and be fair. Throughout my childhood, I have seen all the passion and dedication he puts into his work daily. He does so much that goes unseen, and he is modest. From him, I have learned to help a neighbor in need, pick up work when someone is sick or to do the right thing even when you don’t have to. He has taught me how to have integrity on and off the farm. Sander has shown me how to be a loving parent, hard worker, seless person, community member and someone who strives for success.

Tell us something about yourself that many people do not know.

To my friends, I’m always a great listener. I’m the type of person who will sit and listen to you all day and chime in when needed.

I’m an observant person who spends more times listening than talking. Sometimes my quietness is mistaken for judging or dislike.

I try my best to put others before me. I am a mellow person and don’t get angry easily. One of my greatest weaknesses is being too nice to people, and sometimes they take advantage of me. I am always willing to help someone, and I don’t expect anything in return. I strive to be honest to everyone, fair, modest and kind.

Brook Webb is a senior at Thorp High School. She and her family – parents Sander and Amy Penterman, and brothers Seth, Evan, Izaak and Ethan – dairy farm in Clark County near Thorp, Wisconsin.

Tell us some of your duties on the farm. I do different odds and ends jobs, but I mainly manage the calves. I bottle feed newborn calves and train them how to drink out of our automated feeder. I do daily cleaning and manage the automated feeder. While feeding calves, I observe them, looking for sick calves and making sure they get the extra care they need.

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it?

I wish we could take a step back.

I am a real down-to-earth type of person who still believes in morals and traditions that seem to be uncommon in today’s world. I wish people wouldn’t be so quick to judge and take offense. I would like to make the world a happier place where we spend less time comparing ourselves with others and more time getting to know people. Teaching children and youth morals and values could stop the negativity in the world.

Spend less time in front of screens and more time with friends and family.

Milking starts at about 3:30 p.m.

Field work is anytime. I dump calf waters and sometimes ll them. I help bed down. I push cows into the parlor to be milked. Sometimes I spray them and wash their feet. I also help with clean up by scraping the holding area and washing milkers. I move the tractor for Dad while he is mixing feed and help pick up bales from the eld.

What is your favorite and least favorite chores? My favorite thing to do is eld work because I like being in the tractor.

Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? Tell us about it. My cow Butterscotch is one of my favorites. She is the only Red and White cow we have.

DAIRY CALENDAR

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) and Iowa State University (ISU) are hosting a free, one day workshop for dairy producers, processors, extension, veterinarians, and emergency responders in Sioux Center Monday, Jan. 27. The workshop will focus on how to prepare for a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak and steps that can be taken today to protect dairies from foreign animal diseases and also diseases already found in the U.S. A 72-hour movement standstill could be implemented nationally to control spread of this highly contagious foreign animal disease. This will impact animal movements and possibly milk and feed movements in Iowa. How would this affect your business? Come to the workshop to learn more, ask questions and share your concerns. Presenters are Dr. Andrew Hennenfent, IDALS Emergency Management Coordinator and Dr. Danelle BickettWeddle, Iowa State University. A free lunch will be provided – pre-registration is appreciated for meal prep purposes. Check-in starts at 8:15 a.m., with the workshops ending at 3 p.m.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension will host workshops in seven locations in January 2020, providing information and resources on farm succession and estate planning. The workshops will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Participants will have an opportunity to meet individually with speakers, including attorneys and tax specialists to ask specic questions about their situations.

As the average age of U.S. farmers continues to inch upward, the need to plan for the transition of land, livestock, machinery, and management decisions has become a top priority in the U.S. agriculture industry. While the ongoing economic downturn in almost all sectors of agriculture may have dampened the short term outlook for some farms, long term business and estate planning decisions should still be on farm businesses to-do lists.

Having intentional conversations around farm succession and developing future plans for the farm provides a better chance of transition success. Even if the owner generation is planning to be a part of the management for 10+ years from now, starting early can help the process go more smoothly. It provides the succession generation time to develop their management skills and provides the farm time to build or increase its nancial stability to include another generation.

In response to high levels of both personal and nancial farm stress, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is offering four “Farm Couple Getaways” aimed at farmers wanting to take advantage of activities to improve farm family communication, work on farm or family goal-setting, farm transitioning, or who would just like a weekend away to discuss farm and family issues.

The dates and locations for the “getaways” are as follows: Friday and Saturday, Jan. 31-Feb. 1, 2020 at Hotel Winneshiek in Decorah. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21-Feb. 22, 2020 at Lake Shore Center at Okoboji in Milford. Thursday and Friday, March 19-20, 2020 at the Best Western Plus Hotel in Dubuque.

The “getaways” run from 12:30 p.m. on the rst day to 3:15 p.m. on the second day of the “getaway”. There is no cost to attend as food, lodging and other expenses are being paid for by sponsorships. However, there is a $50 per couple deposit to hold each reservation, refundable on the second day of the getaway.

Past “Farm Couple Getaways” have proven to be benecial to farm couples. “They are a very productive and delightful time to discuss items of importance to help farms and families be successful”, says Larry Tranel, dairy specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach.

Each “getaway” will consist of ten farm couples and the extension facilitators. Registration will be on a rst come, rst serve basis, due two weeks prior to each session. The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Dairy Team will host a ve-session webinar entitled “Eye on Employees,” beginning Wednesday, Feb. 5 from noon to 1 p.m.

The webinars will address the main concerns that farm and more specically, dairy employers face. Hall said that this ve-part webinar series will take an in-depth look at the questions how to hire and maintain farm employees.

Each presenter will address a certain topic from noon to 1:00 p.m. on the dates listed below: – Feb. 5 - Brett Stanley, special investigator with the Department of Homeland Security, will discuss what information is needed for I-9 Forms and what documentation options there are for immigrant employees to conrm they are legal to work in this country.

– Feb. 12 - ISU Extension and Outreach Farm Management Specialist Melissa O’Rourke will discuss how to begin the interview conversation and give tips to learn the most about the applicant while not breaking the law.

– Feb. 19 - ISU Extension and Outreach Dairy Specialist Larry Tranel will discuss how labor and robotic milkers are not an either-or option for producers and explore the most recent research on the economics of automated milking systems.

– Feb. 26 - ISU Extension and Outreach Dairy Specialist Fred Hall will outline the importance of an employee handbook and give producers ideas on how to create a handbook for their dairy, as well as how to make it a part of their hiring process.

– March 4 - Melissa O’Rourke will return and outline how employees are often misclassied and the consequences of doing so; plus, other employment pitfalls.

Hall said that at the end of each webinar there will be time allowed for a question and answer session.

Each of the two District promotion groups will convene to discuss the current issues relevant to dairy in South Dakota, select leaders on the District and Division boards and discuss other business for the coming year. A presentation by Midwest Dairy Chairman Allen Merrill and Midwest Dairy staff will feature information about the checkoff’s work to deliver for dairy farmers by driving dairy demand through strategic partnerships and opportunities to engage inuencers through a variety of dairy experiences. The day will conclude with the Dairy Princess Reunion and Celebration.

The South Dakota Princess program will celebrate its 65th year on Feb. 6. The milestone celebration and reunion will be held in conjunction with Midwest Dairy’s annual district meeting and the South Dakota Dairy Producers annual business meeting. The event will begin at 5 p.m. at the Swiftel Center in Brookings. The reunion will feature an early evening social which numerous past princesses and their families will attend. The event will highlight each past princess along with their message, illustrating the program’s rich and colorful history.

The South Dakota Dairy Princess has served as the ofcial goodwill ambassador for the South Dakota dairy community and dairy farm families. The program is sponsored by Midwest Dairy’s South Dakota Division to help promote the dairy community and its products. Moving forward, the program will transition to the Dairy Ambassador program which provides postsecondary students with leadership opportunities to connect with consumers and share their dairy story while networking with their peers and industry professionals.
