A decade of advancements Change, growth are Schmidt Dairy’s hallmarks of the past 10 years By Jerry Nelson

WOODSTOCK, Minn. – The past decade has seen a good number of changes at the dairy farm operated by Jeff and Jody Schaap and Jody’s parents, Arlan and Lois Schmidt. When the Dairy Star rst visited Schmidt Dairy in January of 2007, the operation had just nished building a new dairy facility that featured a double-12 parallel parlor and a freestall barn that could house 250 head. Jody and Jeff were looking forward to the birth of their rst child. Many small and large changes have taken place since then. Chief among them is that Jeff and Jody are now the parents of three children, Kaitlyn, 9, Devin, 8, and Carli, 4. The dairy operation has also grown and transformed. “In 2011, we added another 100 freestalls onto our barn. We are currently milking about 365 cows,” Jeff said. This most recent addition to their dairy facilities is home for their fresh cow group and their highest producing group
of cows. All of the freestalls at Schmidt Dairy are equipped with water beds that are bedded with sawdust. Other aspects of the operation have also grown at Schmidt Dairy, including the expansion of their land base from 850 acres to its current 1,400 acres. “A quarter section of land right across the road from us recently came up for sale,” Jeff said. “We had farmed that land since 1995, so we knew that it was good ground. We couldn’t pass up the opportunity when it became available. This past fall, we harvested 271 bushels per acre of corn from that land.” Schmidt Dairy has also become more diversied over the years. They have added wheat, sorghum, triticale and eld peas to their corn, alfalfa and soybean crop rotation and have begun to double-crop a portion of their acres. A couple years ago, they purchased two swine nishing barns where they custom feed some 2,400 head of hogs. Turn to SCHMIDT DAIRY | Page 3

“There’s always a positive cash ďƒ&#x;ow from the hog barns,â€? Jeff said. “It helps us get through those times when milk prices take a dip.â€? Another change is that Schmidt Dairy now raises all of its own bull calves. This decision helped pave the way for the construction in 2014 of a new calf barn that features automatic calf feeders. Despite this change in calf rearing methodology, Lois remains in charge of baby calf care at Schmidt Dairy. “Before we built the new calf barn, Mom was carrying ďƒžve gallon buckets of milk replacer across the yard,â€? Jody said. “The automatic calf feeders made it possible for us to raise all of our bull calves while greatly reducing the physical labor for Mom. But she still walks through the calf pens a couple of times each day to check on everyone.â€? When they built their new dairy facility in 2007, Schmidt
Dairy incorporated the latest in technology, including such things as electronic ID for their cows. It should come as no surprise that they have fully embraced the latest in reproductive technology. “We do genomic testing on every newborn heifer,â€? Jody said. “We have used IVF and have purchased some embryos from other herds. We have invested a lot in our genetics program over the years and it’s nice to see that it’s paying off.â€? now have two full-time and four parttime employees.” Arlan feeds the cattle three days a week and Jeff handles this job the other four. Arlan is also the farm’s chief mechanic. Jody keeps track of their herd’s genetic information and does all of the operation’s bookkeeping. She also works two days a week at a local bank. Jody was recently selected to serve on the board of directors of Genex Cooperative. “I have enjoyed being on the … board of directors,” Jody said. “It has enabled me to do a little traveling and

meet new people.” Schmidt Dairy has been in the Schmidt family since the 1890s. Ten years ago, when Jody and Jeff joined the operation, they bought out the half of the operation that belonged to Jody’s grandfather, Duane Schmidt. Duane, who is 76, still helps out with eld work during the summertime. He mows yards, bales waterways and hauls big round bales of corn stalks onto the farmstead. In 2014, Jeff and Jody purchased the other half of the operation from Arlan and Lois.
“The kids have a vision for the operation,” Arlan said. “Sometimes, the best thing to do is to step back and let the next generation follow their vision.” Looking forward to the next 10 years, the family is looking to progress the same way they have in the past 10. “We have never stood still. We have a desire to keep on improving the operation, ether by growing it or by making it more efcient,” Jody said. Jeff hopes for better milk prices in the upcoming decade. The recent highs and lows of the price has been a chal-
lenge. “We have faced a number of challenges since we joined the operation. But thanks to all the love and support that we have received from our family, we were able to get through them,” he said. It’s family that helps them move forward into the future. “This is all about continuing our family’s tradition of dairy farming,” Jeff said. “We are doing this so that one day, our kids might be able to enjoy some of the same opportunities that we have been given.”

A lot of people, me included, think about mastitis management mostly in the summer. After all, that’s when we see the highest prevalence of it. However, we see mastitis every month of the year. It may not be on the top of the priority list during winter, but it should be on the list nonetheless. You already know about all of the health and economic impacts of mastitis, so why jeopardize your cows and your bottom line? You have your typical mastitis routine—dry treatment, monitoring fresh cows, keeping stalls clean, and the like. However, are you managing for By Emily Wilmes the specic threats and stressors U of M Extension that only winter brings? First, we know it’s cold. And when it’s cold, make sure your cows have access to shelter and an ample amount of clean, dry bedding. Like with any season, the ultimate goal is to keep the amount of stress on your cows low. Making sure your cows are properly sheltered and that barns have adequate ventilation will keep them comfortable, and will prevent them from needing to use extra energy to keep warm. Cows can handle fairly cold temperatures; wind chills are what really bother cows and makes them use extra energy. At the very least, keep cows out of the wind. Providing clean, dry bedding is always on the top of my list for proper management. It’s especially important in the winter that cows are kept dry and clean. If they enter the parlor with a particularly dirty udder, it will require more washing. If the udder is not properly dried, there is a risk of frostbite. Long hair can also make udders difcult to keep clean and dry. If you don’t already, consider singeing or clipping udders. On the subject of udders and teats, teat dip can also put your cows at risk for frostbite. Of course, you need to dip your cows, so what can you do? My Extension colleague, Chuck Schwartau, put it best: “Dip but don’t drip.” If I could rewrite that line, I would say, “dip but don’t drip or skip.” When the weather is freezing and the winds are howling with below 20 wind chills, you may be tempted to not post dip your cows. Even in the winter—don’t skip it. The post dip is too important to leave out, but the way you manage post dipping in the winter may be tweaked a bit. You might recall that optimum contact time for pre-dip is 30 seconds. After the 30 seconds, the dip can be wiped off to continue the milk prep routine. Similarly, a strategy you could implement is to put post dip on for a 30 second contact time, then dry teats before sending cows out of the parlor. You will still get the protection of the post dip, but won’t run the risk of frost-bitten teats. This practice will add some time to milking, but it only needs to be implemented in extreme cold weather. This winter, keep your cows out of the elements and clean and dry, in order to continue combating mastitis.

BROWERVILLE, Minn. – At a young age, T.J. Becker knew he wanted to be a farmer of sorts. Four years ago, Becker knew he wanted to dairy farm, and now, at the age of 16, the high school junior is well on his way to fullling that vision. For more than a year, Becker has worked at Loren Vetsch’s 160-cow dairy near Browerville, Minn., learning the responsibilities of owning and operating a farm. “I was looking for a job on the farm and came across this position on Craigslist,” said Becker, who previously helped with his father’s excavating business. Becker’s parents, Henry and Jennifer, were dairy producers until 1997, when they sold the herd. However, the family still lives on the original farm site, growing crops and raising Holstein steers. One day, Becker hopes to start the family dairy again. “I always knew I wanted to be in agriculture, but I didn’t know if that meant me milking cows or doing something else,” Becker said. “My par-
ents taught me that farming gives you a lot of self pride for what you’re doing – feeding the world – and I like that.” Since taking the position at Vetsch’s last August, Becker has grown into a vital aspect of the dairy. “When I hired T.J., we were milking 128 cows,” Vetsch said. “Now, because there’s more help on the farm we’ve been able to grow the herd.” When he rst started working, Becker was responsible for feeding the heifers and cleaning the barn. Now, Becker works six days a week, feeding the heifers, cleaning the barn and milking in the evenings. “It came from doing smaller things to now doing most of the bigger chores,” said Becker, who is the main milker at night. “I really like working on the farm.” Days begin after Becker nishes class at Long Prairie High School. He arrives on the farm by 4 p.m., and nishes feeding the youngstock before setting the barn up for milking. Vetsch’s cows are housed in a freestall barn, but milked in a tiestall barn with 16 stalls on each side. As the cows are done milking, another em-

Get to know Caleb and Collin Vinkemeier, Norwood Young America, Minn.
What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? Caleb: I participate in FFA Dairy Judging and showing at both the local and state levels. I have shown in the 4-H dairy program for 12 years at the county fair and have had the opportunity to show at state fair for six years. I have also been on the Carver County Dairy Judging Team for six years. With dairy judging, I have been able to compete at local county fairs, the Minnesota State Fair, and on the national level at Harrisburg, Penn., and Louisville, Ky. Another 4-H related activity I am a part of is dairy quiz bowl. My team has been to state numerous times, and this past fall, we went to nationals in Louisville. Collin: FFA and 4-H. Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? Caleb: I started showing cows as soon as my parents would let me and I really enjoyed it, so I wanted to ďƒžnd other activities that allowed me to be involved with the dairy industry. Out of all my activities, my favorite is dairy judging with showing at the state fair a close second. I really like being able to travel and see the quality among all of the dairy breeds across different states. Collin: I enjoy being around cows, and I like the dairy industry. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. Caleb: My best experience is when my dairy judging team got the opportunity to judge in the national contest held in Harrisburg, Penn. This was my ďƒžrst national trip that I got to participate in the judging contest. I ended up getting third individual overall, and my team was also third high team overall. Collin: My favorite experience was when I got to go to Harrisburg to judge cows. What’s your favorite social media and why? Caleb: My favorite social media is Facebook. I am not real involved in social media, but I like Facebook the most because I can follow some of the farms I have visited and see updates at the big shows. Collin: I don’t have a favorite. What are your career aspirations? Caleb: I have not really decided what I would like to do. I am very interested in dairy genetics and am looking into pursuing a career involving this. Collin: I plan on buying the family farm from my parents. What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? Caleb: Through all of these activities that I am a part of, I have learned that there is a bright future for the dairy industry. There are so many young people that I have met that are extremely passionate about the in-

Caleb: I have a twin brother, and I was a full-time PSEO student at Ridgewater College in Hutchinson taking generals my junior year and ďƒžrst semester of my senior year. Tell us some of your duties on the farm. Caleb: My duties on the farm are not as much as they used to be. I mainly help out with ďƒželdwork when needed because I have a full-time job off of the farm. Collin: I help with just about anything on the farm, and I feed calves every day. If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? Caleb: I would change people’s views on agriculture. The general public has such a bad view on all aspects of agriculture for no reason. I would help change people’s views by trying to get the truth out as much as possible and simply inform the public of how things are done in a safe way. This is already being done, but I think that it could be done on a larger scale. Collin: I would like for the average human to know what is actually happening on a farm, and show them that we aren’t hurting any of the livestock on a farm.

What’s the best thing about growing up on a dairy farm? Why? The best part is getting to show cows. I always hope I can get rst place, but it’s really fun to be able to show with my cousins. Iowa’s Dairy Center and Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) are offering a free Veterinary Feed Directive lecture at 1 p.m. on Jan. 18. Iowa’s Dairy Center is located immediately south of the NICC Calmar campus at 1527 Hwy. 150 S., and the lecture will be held in Room 115. Gerry VandeVorde, a livestock compliance investigator for the Iowa Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship, will present information about the Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) nal rule, which went into effect Jan. 1, and is an important part of the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) overall strategy to ensure the judicious use of medically important antimicrobials in food-producing animals. VandeVorde received his B.S. from Iowa State University December 1985 in agricultural studies and agricultural mechanization, with an emphasis in agronomy and extended study in animal science. He has been a compliance investigator with the Iowa Department of Agriculture since 1995 and is an FDA-commissioned ofcer covering medicated feeds, antibiotic tissue residues, bovine spongiform encephalopathy and egg safety. He has knowledge of and has trained in the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act and Iowa Feed Laws and Regulations. Candidates sought for Mower County Dairy Princess The Mower County American Dairy Association is seeking candidates to participate in the 2017 Mower County Dairy Princess contest. Dairy Princess Candidates must be at least a senior in high school and not yet 24 years of age by July 1, 2017. The candidate or her parents must be actively engaged in the production of milk in Mower County for sale to a licensed plant during the current year. A candidate also qualies if she or her parents are employed on a dairy farm in a dairy-related capacity. Mower County dairy royalty are paid for their appearances and receive college scholarships. Girls in third and fourth grade, whose parents or guardians are Mower County dairy farmers or are employed on a dairy farm, are eligible to become Mower County Milkmaids. Girls who are avid users and promoters of dairy products may also apply. Milkmaids can participate at dairy promotion events throughout the county. This is a Mower County program and there is no further competition beyond the county level. During the recruitment meetings, which were held in various locations across Puerto Rico, Rovai met with government ofcials and interested employees to explain expectations, answer questions and develop an open dialogue which will hopefully result in employment on South Dakota dairies. “Because of the high rate of unemployment in Puerto Rico (12 percent) there is a real interest in work on dairies in South Dakota,” Rovai said. She added that many who attended the recruitment meetings have agriculture work experience and expressed an interest in learning new skills. Moving forward, Rovai and the SDSU Extension team are available to help dairies in training their employees. “Our collaborative proposal includes the possibility of developing a comprehensive training program in Spanish to address not only current industry standards and best management practices in dairy farming, but also social and cultural differences,” Rovai explained. Recognition awards will be presented in the following categories: Dairy Woman and Dairyman of the Year: These two awards, the Dairyman of the Year and the Dairy Woman of the Year, are presented to active dairy producers whose primary source of income is derived from their dairy farm. The producers selected to receive these honors excel in breeding quality animals while maintaining efcient production. Award recipients utilize progressive management practices, serve their communities and are involved in government activities, breed organizations and other aspects of the dairy industry. Industry Person of the Year: This award is presented to an individual in recognition of excellence in research, development, education, marketing, manufacturing or other elds, which are a part of an industry or institution that provides goods or services to the dairy industry. CWT assists with 3 million pounds of cheese and butter export sales Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) has accepted 13 requests for export assistance from Dairy Farmers of America, Northwest Dairy Association (Darigold) and United Dairymen of Arizona. These member cooperatives have contracts to sell 2.518 million pounds (1,142 metric tons) of Cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese, and 440,925 pounds (200 metric tons) of butter to customers in Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Oceania. The product has been contracted for delivery in the period from December 2016 through March 2017. So far this year, CWT has assisted member cooperatives who have contracts to sell 51.399 million pounds of American-type cheeses, 12.399 million pounds of butter (82 percent milkfat) and 21.316 million pounds of whole milk powder to 23 countries on ve continents. The sales are the equivalent of 908.992 million pounds of milk on a milkfat basis. Assisting CWT members through the Export Assistance program, in the long-term, helps member cooperatives gain and maintain market share, thus expanding the demand for U.S. dairy products and the U.S. farm milk that produces them. This, in turn, positively impacts all U.S. dairy farmers by strengthening and maintaining the value of dairy products that directly impact their milk price. The amounts of dairy products and related milk volumes reect current contracts for delivery, not completed export volumes. CWT will pay export assistance to the bidders only when export and delivery of the product is veried by the submission of the required documentation. The Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) Export Assistance program is funded by voluntary contributions from dairy cooperatives and individual dairy farmers.
