Low stress, low cell count Hecker named silver winner of National Mastitis Council Award

SHELDON, Wis. – Walking into Bob Hecker’s dairy barn reveals the peace and quiet of contented milking cows munching away on hay or lying down in tranquility.

Hecker, with his wife, Jennifer, and their 12 children, milk 50 cows near Sheldon, Wis. Their farm’s reputation for producing and shipping quality milk propelled them to win a silver National Dairy Quality Award, a program presented by the National Mastitis Council.

Of 125 applicants, the top 45 were selected based on the following criteria: measures of quality, udder health protocol, milking routine, mastitis detection and treatment, and overall herd health and wellness strategies. Those top winners were then sorted into the following categories: platinum, gold and silver.

This is the second time the farm has received such an honor from the National Mastitis Council. Hecker was nominated by his eld technician, Jim Kauffman from Associated Milk Producers, Inc., for having a somatic cell count of 90,000 during the months of May and June in 2016.

“Over the past six months, our average cell count has been around 60,000,” Hecker said.

The Heckers graze their cattle as much as their pastures allow, and 2016 was an ideal season for that.

“The grass never stopped growing,” Hecker said.

Their cattle have a rolling herd average between 15,000 and 16,000 pounds per year. While the herd is mostly Holstein, a few Jersey and Brown Swiss crosses occupy some stalls throughout the barn.

Each stall is bedded with bagged sawdust on a regular basis, and the cows eat a diet consisting of dry baled hay.

“I also feed a B-vitamin supplement not to lower cell count, but to boost immunity,” Hecker said.

Even during the winter months, the cattle are put out to pasture, in a sense.

“As long as the temperature is above zero, we let the cows out for three to four hours a day to eat dry hay,” Hecker said.

Keeping the cows as content as possible is also a priority at the Hecker farm. Even when strangers enter the barn, the cattle remain composed and relatively serene, a phenomenon that Hecker believes has aided him in producing wholesome milk.

Moellers’ calves pack on pounds with automatic feeders

Iowa farm getting heifers to calve at 21 months

RIDGEWAY, Iowa – Despite the winter’s cold, howling winds outside, calves cozily cavort in large pens inside a barn on Kevin and Gayleen Moellers’ farm near Ridgeway, Iowa,.

Along with this benet of a new barn, the Moellers have learned how to raise calves a different way since building their new calf facility four years ago on their 750-cow dairy, KG4 Farms.

The 60- by-135-foot, cross-ventilated barn with sidewall curtains has six pens, all deeply bedded with wheat straw. Three GEA automatic feeders feed the pens of 25 calves each by dispensing pasteurized milk and milk replacer.

ly reduce the labor associated with raising some 800 calves a year, but they do make the job easier, Gayleen said.

“You don’t build this building to get rid of labor.

It’s a different type of labor,” she said.

The group pens still need to be cleaned once a week.

But that’s readily done with a skid loader driven in once the overhead doors are open.

the building’s ofce provides information on how often each calf is drinking from the automatic feeders, and how much.

Plus, the feeders need regular maintenance and cleaning.

“Cleanliness is so important,” Gayleen said.

When KG4 Farms began using the automatic feeders, a few calves died because the Moellers did not know that a circuit cleaning needed to be done every day. Bacterialaden milk was being fed to the calves for four months, resulting in the death losses, Gayleen said.

The feeders automatically clean themselves twice a day.

But they still need a human to perform the circuit cleaning. That involves removing, cleaning and disinfecting the nipples, along with some internal components, Gayleen said. A circuit cleaning takes about 10 minutes per machine.

Understanding the need for circuit cleaning was part of the Moellers’ two-year learning curve with the feeders, Gayleen said. Another facet was guring out when to start calves in the group pens and get them going on the automated feeders. “[At rst], we put the Turn to MOELLERS | Page 6

off with a dry paper towel. The foaming action has been effective for Hecker in cleaning the surface of the teat before attaching milkers.

“It bubbles the dirt and dust away,” Hecker said.

Then, after each teat has been wiped clean, several strips of milk are taken from each quarter before the milking unit is attached. When the cow is nished milking, each teat is coated with an iodinebased post-dip.

If a cow presents with a hard quarter, Hecker treats it as subclinical mastitis and applies a mint-based dairy liniment to reduce swelling.

“I also milk that quarter into a quarter bucket for a couple of days, and if it doesn’t clear up on its own, then I’ll treat for mastitis with an antibiotic,” Hecker said. “Of course, if a cow has a quarter that is obviously rock hard, then she gets treated.”

Of their 12 children, the oldest three – David, Daniel and MaryEllen – are grown up

and no longer at home. Their sons, Joseph, Andrew, Peter and Timothy all help with everyday chores and their daughters, Ruth, Hannah, Esther, Abigail and Rebekah, pitch in as needed. Homeschooling allows their children to be as involved with the farm as opportunities arise throughout the year.

“Everyone helps out during hay season,” Jennifer said.

Even though this isn’t the rst time they’ve been recognized for raising healthy cattle that give nourishing milk, the Hecker family is still grateful all the same.

“We received the same award two years ago,” Jennifer said. “Our reaction to winning again was thankful and pleased.”

While Hecker can certainly take much of the credit for his family’s success in dairying, he gives all of the recognition to the Lord.

“Without Him, none of this would be possible,” Hecker said.

As calves grow, the auto feeders gradually trim the amount of liquid they get to one liter a day, Gayleen said. That happens when the calves are switching to a diet made up more of hay and grain. After weaning, calves are moved out of the barn and into larger group pens.

Gayleen said the Moellers are pleased with their calf barn and the automatic feeders. She said just two calves older than two weeks died during 2016. For calves younger than that, the death loss was closer to six percent.

The Moellers employ a full-time calf feeder and have eight employees who milk in the double-14 parlor. Two more employees focus on crops on the 600 owned and 2,500 rented acres. The main crops are 1,000 acres of alfalfa, plus corn.

While Gayleen handles the farm’s nancial and herd records, she is also in charge of the automatic calf feeders functioning. She trouble-shoots the

machines and knows how they need to be cleaned.

Kevin oversees the dairy’s management and is in charge of cropping, purchasing and new construction, Gayleen said.

The Moellers’ sons, Tye and Arley, farm with them. Kevin and Gayleen’s daughters have their own careers. Nessa is a large-animal veterinarian at Reedsburg, Wis., while Tara is a plant breeder in Iowa.

In addition to dairy cattle and crops, the Moellers custom raise hogs. They own two nishing buildings and provide the labor and management for those plus three more barns.

Gayleen said KG4 Farms has received a permit to expand to as many as 1,800 cows. But the next phase of growth of 250 cows won’t take place until milk prices strengthen.

For now, the Moellers are pleased with their calf barn and automatic feeders. “The calves have such great growth now,” Gayleen said.

Severe cold, high winds increase risk of mastitis

The high winds and extremely cold weather across South Dakota may increase the risk of Staph mastitis in dairy cows.

“Current weather conditions may result in skin chapping of dairy cows’ teats,” said Alvaro Garcia, SDSU Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Program Director & Professor. “There’s a correlation between the severity of the skin damage, the degree of colonization by Staphylococcus aureus, and the increased risk of mastitis.”

Ointment may make matters worse Garcia said that according to research, ointmenttreated teats have marginally higher concentrations of Staph. aureus than dipped teats. “The results suggest that treating teat skin with ointments can actually be more cosmetic and may not reduce the incidence of intra-mammary infections,” he said. “Although ointments are good skin conditioners, their use may be warranted before the skin is damaged by cold weather rather than for treatment.”

The use of post-milking teat disinfectant is the single most effective practice for reducing the incidence of contagious mastitis, Garcia said.

Teat dips containing 1 percent iodine and 10 percent glycerin have been demonstrated to reduce by close to 90 percent the number of new intra-mammary infections caused by Staph. aureus.

“To reduce the colonization of the skin it is important to teat dip and then blot the teats dry before the cows exit the parlor and are exposed to cold drafts,” Garcia said.

According to the 2007 National Animal Health Monitoring System Dairy study, Staph. aureus is the most prevalent contagious mastitis pathogen in the country, and it is prevalent in 43 percent of all dairy farms.

The same study suggests that prevalence of Staph. aureus is unrelated to herd size or region.

Due to the contagious nature of this bacterium, using gloves is a very important prophylactic practice. “However, while nitrile disposable gloves cost as little as 40 cents per pair, nearly half of the dairies in the U.S. still do not use them,” Garcia said.

Costs per mastitis case are associated with the additional costs of reduced production, discarded milk, costs of replacements, additional labor, treatment, and veterinary expenses.

“To make matters worse, in trying to save costs by not purchasing gloves, there’s a risk of spreading the infection to other cows,” Garcia said.

Garcia added that there are additional strategies to consider. Producers should milk cows with Staphylococcal mastitis at the end of the milking shift and with a separate milking unit, or group the animals into a separate string of “sick” cows.

“It’s a shame, because only one-third of the dairies in the U.S. take these preventative measures,” Garcia said. “The steps are straightforward and can make a solid improvement for dairy prots.”

Dairy producers concerned about exports

Benchmark milk prices in California and Federal orders (FO) ended 2016 in different directions. The Agriculture Department announced the December FO Class III price at $17.40 per hundredweight (cwt.), up 64 cents from November, $2.96 above a year ago, and the highest Class III since December 2014, and is 81 cents above California’s comparable Class 4b price. It equates to $1.50 per gallon, up from $1.44 in November and $1.24 a year ago.

That put the 2016 Class III average at $14.87, down from $15.80 in 2015 and $22.34 in 2014, and the lowest annual average since 2010.

Class III futures late Friday morning portended a January Class III at $16.60, February at $16.86, and March at $17.06, with a peak of $17.78 in September.

The December FO Class IV price is $14.97, up $1.21 from November but 55 cents below a year ago.

Its 12-month average is $13.77, down from $14.35 in 2015 and $22.09 in 2014.

California’s December Class 4b cheese milk price was $16.59 per cwt., down 86 cents from November but $3.69 above a year ago. The 2016 average is $14.27, down from $14.47 in 2015 and $19.93 in 2014, and the lowest since 2010.

The 4b trailed the FO Class III price by an average of 71.6 cents in 2016, ranging from a high of $1.39 in May to a low of 19 cents in June. But, the November 4b price topped the FO price by 69 cents for the rst time since December 2009. The 2016 lag average is down from $1.33 in 2015 and $2.41 in 2014.

The December Class 4a butter-powder milk price is $14.79 per cwt., up $1.10 from November, 24 cents above a year ago, and the highest 4a price since November 2015. The 2016 4a averaged $13.41, down from $14.10 in 2015 and $22.00 in 2014.

The Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction started 2017 with a dip and not the kind you put potato chips in. The weighted average for all products offered on January 3 was down 3.9 percent, after slipping 0.5 percent on December 20.

Whole milk powder led the declines, down 7.7 percent, after inching 0.8 percent lower December 20. Lactose was down 2.9 percent and rennet casein was down 2.7 percent. Anhydrous milkfat was off 0.6 percent following a 2.3 percent drop.

Gains were led by buttermilk powder, up 4.5 percent. Skim milk powder was up 2.3 percent, Cheddar cheese was up 1.4 percent, and butter was up 0.5 percent.

FC Stone equated the average GDT butter price to $1.9459 per pound U.S. CME butter closed January 6 at $2.22 per pound. GDT Cheddar cheese equated to $1.7661 per pound U.S. and compares to Friday’s CME block Cheddar at $1.67. GDT skim milk powder was at $1.2066 per pound U.S. and the whole milk powder average was at $1.4941 per pound U.S. CME Grade A nonfat dry milk price closed Friday at $1.0525 per pound.

advantage of the discounted spot loads of previous weeks, report using milk they had on hand. With available milk, schools returning from break, and football playoff season approaching, production is active. Cheese demand, which was slow the last week of 2016, was better than expected New Year’s Week.

Some pizza cheese processors report orders are nearly where they would expect them to be in late January, prior to Super Bowl.

Western cheese makers report good demand continued past the winter holidays but sales have slowed somewhat. Domestic demand for branded cheese is solid. A few manufacturers report much of their 2017 contracted cheese business is in place for retail and wholesale accounts. Cheese production is active and milk is in good supply. Contacts report a lot of aged blocks and barrels are in storage.

Butter gave up 4 3/4-cents New Year’s Week, falling to $2.22 per pound, but it’s 18 1/2-cents above a year ago. Twenty one cars were sold on the week.

DMN says Central butter production is active due to the availability of cream following the holiday season. With many schools reopening their doors, butter producers face readily available cream coming from bottlers and much of it is clearing to churns. Retail butter demand is seasonally slow, while food service remains steady to slightly slower. Inventories are steady to building.

Western butter output is active. Inventories are tighter and market prices are strong. Domestic butter demand has backed off a little from the pre-holiday pull, but is still seasonally strong and steady.

Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk closed Friday at $1.0525 per pound, up 3 1/4- cents on the week, highest spot price since March 4, 2015, and 31 cents above a year ago. Three cars found new homes on the week at the CME. USDA’s latest Dairy Products report shows November cheese output totaled 1.0 billion pounds, down 2.6 percent from October but 2.7 percent above November 2015. That brought year to date (YTD) production, to 11.01 billion pounds, up 2.0 percent from a year ago.

California produced 209.4 million pounds of that cheese, down 1.6 percent from October but 4.8 percent more than a year ago. Wisconsin, at 265.5 million pounds, was down 2.3 percent from October but 3.8 percent above a year ago. Idaho was down 2.8 percent from a year ago, Minnesota was down 3.6 percent.

Italian cheese output was at 435.9 million pounds, was down 2.3 percent from October but 2.6 percent above a year ago, with YTD at 4.8 billion pounds, up 4.0 percent. Mozzarella, at 338.8 million pounds, was up 1.6 percent from a year ago and YTD was at 3.75 billion pounds, up 3.3 percent.

Total American type cheese, at 394.8 million pounds, was down 1.0 percent from October, 3.9 percent above a year ago, with YTD output at 4.31 billion pounds, up 0.4 percent. Cheddar output amounted to 281.7 million pounds, up 5.9 percent from a year ago; with YTD at 3.1 billion pounds, down 0.2 percent.

Churns produced 143.7 million pounds of butter, up 1.5 percent from October but 5.7 percent below a year ago. YTD output hit 1.72 billion pounds, up 3 percent.

California butter output totaled 42.1 million pounds, down 0.4 percent from October and 7.5 percent below a year ago. New York output was up 0.3 percent from a year ago and Pennsylvania was up 2.4 percent.

Dry whey output totaled 73.5 million pounds, down 6.9 percent from a year ago, with YTD hitting 878.3 million pounds, down 0.5 percent.

Nonfat dry milk production totaled 126.8 million pounds, down 10 percent from October, 0.9 percent below a year ago, with YTD output at 1.59 billion pounds, down 4.7 percent. Skim milk powder production, at 48.1 million pounds, was up 7.0 percent from a year ago, with YTD output at 504.6 million pounds, up 25.3 percent from 2015.

The report also showed November nonfat dry milk stocks at 215.8 million pounds, down 3.9 percent from October but 8.5 percent above a year ago.

Dairy margins were at to stronger over the second half of December, with milk prices lower in nearby contracts and steady in deferred months, while feed costs remained largely unchanged, according to the latest Margin Watch (MW) from Chicago-based Commodity and Ingredient Hedging LLC. The MW adds that Margins are currently very strong from a historical perspective, at above the 90th percentile of the previous decade through Third Quarter, while just below that threshold in Fourth Quarter.

Milk prices succumbed to pressure in nearby contracts following the latest USDA monthly Milk Production report, which indicated continued expansion. U.S. milk production totaled 17.1 billion pounds in November, up 0.6 percent from October and 2.4 percent from last year. USDA also reported a 17,000head increase in the U.S. milking herd from 2015 to 9.339 million, which was also up 4,000 from October’s gure.

Productivity in the milking herd also rose with an above-trend 2.2 percent increase in milk production per cow during November. At the same time however, a drop in New Zealand milk production and a large drawdown in butter and cheese stocks in November helped to provide support.

Feed costs have held relatively steady. The market is looking to the January WASDE report, which will include Quarterly Grain Stocks, as well as developing South American weather for further direction, the MW stated.

Speaking to feed prices, Penn State’s James Dunn’s latest Dairy Outlook reports that Corn and soybean meal prices are essentially the same as last month, with the corn price down 0.4 percent and soybean meal price down 1.7 percent. The South American corn and soybean crops will have record yields and production. U.S. exports of corn and beans are large despite the strong dollar. Income over Feed Costs (IOFC) Penn State’s measure of income over feed costs rose by 5 percent in December from November on higher milk prices and lower cost feed.

People in the dairy community Tillman Fingerson, 1939-2016 Tillman Kermit Fingerson, of Fountain, Minn., passed away peacefully, but unexpectedly, on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2016.

Tillman was born April 19, 1939, in Rochester to Kermit Conrad and Alma Olivia (Redalen) Fingerson. He grew up in Fountain and attended elementary school in Fountain and graduated from Preston High School in 1957. He worked on his family farm through childhood and continued farming upon graduating from high school. He married Shirley Joan Bestor on Oct. 4, 1958, at the Greenleafton Reformed Church. He and his wife raised registered Holstein cattle. Together they operated Shir-Man Registered Holsteins. He had a passion and love for the dairy cattle business.

Tillman is lovingly remembered by his wife of 58 years, Shirley; children, Steven (Shirley) of Rochester, Shelley (Jeff) Kinsel, of Shoreview, Minn., Sharlene (Patrick) Daninger of Forest Lake, Minn., Stacy (Todd) Leiding of Fountain, Tand rista (Nicholas) Ruen of Lanesboro; 15 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Allen (MaryAnn) Fingerson, of Burnsville, Minn.

Neenan receives 2016 I-CASH Hall of Fame Award Dan Neenan, director of the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety (NECAS) at Northeast Iowa Community College’s (NICC) Peosta campus, has received the 2016 I-CASH Hall of Fame Award. I-CASH created the Hall of Fame Award in 2002 to recognize individuals or organizations that have made signicant contributions to agricultural safety and health in Iowa. A trained rst responder, Neenan serves as a paramedic specialist and reghter II with the Epworth and Centralia/Peosta Iowa Fire Department. He serves on the Iowa EMS and I-CASH advisory boards, chairs the Iowa Community College Fire Program Manager task force, is treasurer of the Dubuque County EMS Association and has served on the Progressive Ag Foundation Board. Neenan has conducted numerous education programs on-site at NECAS, across Iowa and the U.S. His training programs are sought nationally and have brought him to 30 U.S. states. One of his most recent efforts is related to grain bin safety, which is supported by OSHA and other resources.

The press release added that “The U.S. dairy industry, like most other agricultural sectors across America, has signicantly beneted from the agricultural provisions of prior U.S. free trade agreements.

At the same time, however, we face a growing wave of nontariff barriers that threaten to impede overseas sales. Our NAFTA partners epitomize both sides of that story: Our dairy agreement with Mexico has created an export market worth well over $1 billion a year, while on the other side of the border Canada has at every opportunity decided to out its dairy trade commitments to the U.S.” USDEC and NMPF stated that they “Look forward to continuing our dialogue with the incoming

Administration on the importance of pursuing wellnegotiated trade agreements that bolster our ability to serve consumers in foreign markets.”

Lastly, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) is suggesting a major reduction in servings of milk offered in the Women’s, Infants, and Children’s (WIC) feeding program. NMPF and the International Dairy Foods Association stated in a press release that the NAS recommendations would undermine the nutritional value of the WIC program to needy Americans.

It is contradictory that the NAS report would both acknowledge that many WIC participants are not getting enough milk, yet at the same time suggest further reducing the milk served in the program.

Milk, cheese and yogurt are the Number 1 source of nine essential nutrients in children’s diets: protein, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, vitamins A, B12, D and riboavin. The reason dairy foods are included in the WIC package is that no other food source can deliver such a wide range of vital nutrients.

Cutting back on dairy is a step in the wrong direction.

of milk per day. The milk margin is the estimated amount of the Pennsylvania all milk price that remains after the feed costs per hundredweight of milk production are paid. Like income over feed cost, this measure shows that the December PA milk margin was 5 percent higher than in November. The Pennsylvania drought continues, with much of the state and the region still abnormally dry, according to Dunn.

Meanwhile; USDA’s latest National Milk Cost of Production report shows November’s total milk production costs were down from the previous month and a year ago.

Total feed costs averaged $10.49 per cwt., down 15 cents from September, down 15 cents from October, and 68 cents below November 2015. Purchased feed costs, at $5.86 per cwt., were down 15 cents from September, down 6 cents from October, and 14 cents below November 2015.

Total costs, including feed, bedding, marketing, fuel, repairs, hired labor, taxes, etc., at $22.41 per cwt., were down 12 cents from September, down 21 cents from October, and 75 cents below a year ago.

Feed costs made up 47.0 percent of total costs in November, virtually unchanged from the month before but down from 48.2 percent a year ago.

Jan. 10 - Tighter EU Butter Market Paves Way for U.S. Exports

Less than three years after milk production quotas were eliminated in the European Union, the largest milk-producing and dairy-exporting region of the world experienced record-high butter prices. The current post-holiday modest reduction in EU butter prices is welcomed as end-users replenish much-needed private stocks of butter. Lower quantities of EU butter for export means U.S. butter exporters should enjoy a growing opportunity in world butter markets in 2017, which is buoying domestic butter prices.

But as the U.S. domestic demand continues to grow, not all of the extra supplies will be available for exports to the international markets,” Richarts writes. A strengthening U.S. dollar and mountains of Intervention stocks will keep EU skim milk power exports competitive as stocks move into the market, particularly in light of better world economic prospects and the potential for crude oil prices to increase.

Despite shrinking milk production in the first half of 2016, the European Union will likely continue to expand its share of world skim milk powder exports as world economic conditions improve.... The report, which was written by dairy market consultant Erhard Richarts, forecasts that milk production in the EU-28 will decline by 5.3 billion pounds in the Àrst six months of this year. For all of 2017, the report states that EU output should reach 332 billion pounds leaving full-year output about 4.4 billion pounds below 2016 milk production.

In addition to low milk prices, EU dairy producers have been grappling with a number of market disrupting factors over the past few years, including the elimination of quota, the Russian import ban on dairy products, and roller-coaster Chinese imports of infant formulas. Thus despite signiÀcant increases in milk prices that began in October 2016, Richarts says that it will take EU producers time before they gain enough conÀdence to expand. At the same time, milk production is also contracting in Oceania and Latin America, both major dairy-exporting regions. Growing output

Last week the European Union entertained its second tender of skim milk powder (SMP) from Intervention. However, the tender did not result in any sales. All bids were rejected for being, “too far from the prevailing market price and the minimum selling prices set at the previous tender.” While there are growing concerns over SMP availability later in 2017 based on declining milk output from Argentina, Australia, Europe, and New Zealand, the latest EU tender rings discord with a market that is having difficulty securing fresh product. The EC’s product is likely 16 to 17 months old at the point of tender. The current bids suggest there is still a two-tiered pricing system, meaning fresh product commands a premium to older product. When fresh product becomes scarce, the price disparity with older product, readily available for use, tends to erode as buyers have limited alternatives. The latest tender suggests buyers still have some access to product. At the other end of the spectrum, reports are circulating that China has already exhausted its low-tariff milk powder allotment from New Zealand. If China, the world’s largest milk powder importer, has started 2017 with a strong pull, which apparently it has, there is likely more to come. Overall, the milk powder market is sending mixed signals and likely has buyers on a heighten sense of alert as the market continues to plot a course for price recovery. .

A climate-based management system Smith operates 4,000-cow dairy in dry, hot environment

CLOVIS, N.M. – Because of the 17 to 18 inches of average rain fall each year, the nearly 140 dairy farmers of New Mexico are limited to the amount of feed they can produce.

“None of the dairy farms around here are able to grow 100 percent of their own feed because it’s so dry,” said dairyman Ben Smith.

The state’s climate affects how Smith manages his 4,000cow dairy farm with his wife, Molly, their children, Logan, 15, Keldon, 13, and Kyson, 6, his dad, Albin, and his brotherin-law, Ronnie Clark, near Clovis, N.M. With reliable rainfall not probable, Smith uses a pivot sprinkler irrigation system on 600 of his 1,500-some acres using a combination of lagoon water and fresh water.

“The problem with irrigating here is we have to pump ground water from wells that are 280- to 350-feet deep, which uses a lot of electricity,” Smith

According the Smith, most dairy farmers in the area, including themselves, reuse their water two to three times.

“We just want to do what we can to conserve our water,” Smith said.

Because of the dry conditions, the Smiths have water rights, which average three acre-feet of water per acre of land.

“When you purchase land in New Mexico, and the owner of that land still has their water rights, you can purchase those with the land,” Smith said.

“There aren’t restrictions yet on how much we can pump, but many farmers are already

monitoring it to stay ahead of the game. I can see that happening eventually.”

Due to a limited water supply, Smith is intentional about what he grows on their land.

“Corn was big here, but it’s a very thirsty plant…almost too thirsty for us,” Smith said.

Instead, Smith plants a sorghum variety.

“What we plant on the irrigated land is harvested and used for baleage,” Smith said. “The rest is dry planted. If it’s really dry, we can make it into hay.”

During the winter, with temperatures averaging between 35 and 40 degrees with an average low in the mid 20s and an average snowfall of 6 to 8 inches, Smith plants triticale in the elds.

“It yields more for us than wheat,” Smith said. “It does really well for us.”

Like the sorghum, Smith irrigates 600 acres of the triticale and dry plants the rest.

“If it’s wet enough, we let our heifers graze it over the winter,” Smith said.

The Smiths purchase the remainder of the ration, which consists of corn silage, ake corn, soybean meal, corn gluten meal, dried distillers grain, sunower meal pellets, peanut hull pellets and cottonseed.

They also purchase alfalfa.

“That is the staple in our ration,” Smith said. “We’re close to southern Colorado, which has a lot of alfalfa ground. It’s convenient to get it here.”

With temperatures in the summer averaging in the mid 90s, with 10 to 15 percent humidity allowing temperatures to drop to between 68 and 72 degrees every night, Smith and his family house their cows in dry open lots.

“Those are popular down here.

There aren’t many freestall barns or covered feed lanes,” Smith said.

On the home farm, cows are kept in 250-cow pens measuring 500 feet long by 250 feet wide.

“Since the facility was built in the 1990s, pens aren’t as big,” Smith said.

“But they work.”

On the second farm – Arrowhead – which is less than one mile away, cows are kept in 400-cow pens measuring 800 feet long by 350 feet wide.

Each pen at both farms has a shade cover running almost the full length of the pen and is 20 feet wide.

“On the days it’s calm with no wind, that’s when it gets really hot,” Smith said.

To keep cows cool, the Smiths run fans in the parlor and overhead misters in the holding area.

Even though the wind keeps temperatures manageable, the wind is not always easy to deal with, especially since their farm is at 4,000 feet elevation with no trees to provide protection.

“The wind, especially sustained winds, can sometimes hurt us the most,” he said. “There’s nothing to block it, and in the winter, it can cut right through you.”

Knowing that, Smith uses big square bales to act as windbreaks and cotton stubble for bedded packs outside.

The lactation groups are separated between the two farms.

“All of our conrmed pregnant cows and heifers, and dry cows are housed at the Arrowhead farm so everything calves at one site,” Smith said. “But as cows transition later into lactation, they are moved over to the home farm.”

At Arrowhead, cows are milked in a double-40 parallel parlor, while the cows at the home farm are milked in double-23 parallel parlor. Both locations milk three times a day.

“We toyed with going back and forth between two and three milkings a day for a year with our conrmed pregnant cows to save on labor and feed,” Smith said. “But we weren’t getting as much milk and the cows had longer days in milk. We couldn’t justify it the way we’re set up.”

Even though they are considered one farm with two sites, the Smiths sell their milk to different co-ops – Dairy Farmers of America and Dean Foods.

“It’s just how it worked out, but it’s unique to our farm,” Smith said.

Since they are near a pocket of dairies along the Texas border and live near a town with a population of nearly 40,000 people, the supporting industries for dairy are pretty stable, but they do not have everything.

“If we have a problem with a wagon, we have to drive 3.5 hours one way to get parts,” Smith said.

Although the Smiths call Clovis, N.M., home, they did not always farm there.

Originally, Albin leased a farm over the Texas border milking 28 cows when Ben was in high school.

After graduating in 1996, Ben, who is 6 feet 5 inches tall, played basketball in college.

“I wanted to play, and I had the opportunity to do it,” Smith said. “But there were a lot of good athletes that were better than me.”

While Smith was playing college basketball, his dad and his late mother, Sandi, came across their home farm.

“When they signed the papers for it, I felt like dairy farming was something I really wanted to do,” Smith said. “I have a love for it.”

Smith came home after college and began working with his dad to grow the operation into what it is today.

With three children of his own, Smith is planning to eventually take over the farm from his dad and continue the dairy into the future.

“We did this ourselves and put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this place,” Smith said. “I want to make my mom and dad proud, and continue the dairy on for our family.”

2016: A year in review The Dairy Star staff compiled a list of note-worthy news and human interest stories from 2016. The following is a recap of each one.

Jan. 30 Rule change requires VFD for antibiotics in feed Dairy farmers and their veterinarians had one year to gear up for a change in the way they treat sickness in animals on their dairies. On Jan. 1, 2017, the United States Food and Drug Administration put into action the revised regulations for obtaining a veterinary feed directive after announcing the change one year ago. In order to give an antibiotic through feed to livestock, producers now need to obtain a VFD from their veterinarian.

“For dairy cattle, it would be very unusual that a veterinarian would be using this tool. This tool has been around since the ‘90s, but most of those drugs have been used in swine and other species, so for dairy producers this is a new thing,” said Nikki Neeser, program manager of dairy, meat and feed inspection for the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. “Dairy producers don’t typically use drugs in feed in milking cows for residue issues, so this will mainly affect youngstock or other animals for beef.”

The change came about because of the concern about antibiotic resistance in humans and animals, Neeser said. For veterinarians, this change means more paperwork and more visits to farms. For dairy producers, the VFD change most likely will mean the need to work more closely with their veterinarian, Neeser said.

Jan. 30 Coming to a close UW-Madison to discontinue dairy sheep program MADISON, Wis. – Although the University of Wisconsin-Madison had a unique program with it’s dairy sheep research herd in its animal science department, the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences announced Jan. 5, 2016, the program would end following the 2016 milking season.

Professor Dr. Dave Thomas was in charge of the 20-year program that housed a herd at the Spooner Ag Research Station. Because of his retirement at the end of 2016, the 350-ewe ock was dispersed at an auction in October.

“There are no other dairy sheep programs at other land grant universities in the country. As the only research dairy sheep ock in the United States, this is a loss to the industry in that respect,” said Richard Straub, senior associate dean of the UW College of Agricultural Life Sciences.

In addition to Thomas’ retirement, cuts to the university’s budget also factored into the program’s closure.

“There is a cost to maintaining [the program],” Straub said. “With a $2.8 million cut to the budget, the University could not afford to maintain a ock without someone to use it.”

While the dairy sheep industry is highly popular in the Mediterranean, it is still growing in the United States. The majority of U.S. dairy sheep producers are located in the Upper Midwest and Northeast, with some growth in the far West. Location continues to play a large role in the development of the dairy sheep industry.

During it’s 20-year tenure, the program conducted research on improving dairy sheep genetics, production of sheep milk for cheese processing, the impact of grain supplementation level on milk production while summer grazing and the effect of ewe lamb feeding level on future milk production.

Jan. 30 Exceeding expectations Metz family feels cheese venture is going well one year after starting on-farm processing RUSHFORD, Minn. – After envisioning an on-farm cheese processing facility for 20 years, the Metz family’s goal came to fruition.

The Metz family - Jeff and Mariann, along with their children, Nathan, Alicia, Courtney and Brittany, along with her husband, Nick Agrimson – began making cheese in July 2014 in a processing facility, Metz’s Hart-Land Creamery, they built on their 210-cow dairy near Rushford, Minn.

“It’s been rewarding to see it after all the planning,” said Metz, the head cheesemaker.

Building an on-farm creamery helped the family diversify during times of low milk price and generate more income to bring home the next generation to the business. As of February 2016, the family was using 15 to 20 percent of the milk they produced on the farm and selling the rest to their cooperative.

Although marketing the cheese has been an unexpected challenge, the paperwork for the creamery is more than expected and the number of hours worked each week has not decreased, the Metzes feel this has been a good venture for the family.

“The fun part is when people smile and tell me they like what we’re making,” Metz said.

ConƟnued from 2016 | Page 18 Feb. 27 Dairy farmers react to Land O’Lakes base program Co-op’s member owners receive letter about changes starting in 2017 Member owners of Land O’Lakes received letters in January 2016 that informed them of a base program the cooperative would be implementing in the Upper Midwest by the beginning of 2017.

Each member owner is assigned a production base volume established from a 12-month history, and equals the highest daily production average achieved for one full month. Members may still produce over their base, but at their own risk. If the cooperative must go to extra measures to market the milk, the producer will cover the additional cost.

An increase of milk production in the region along with a lower demand for products is a main reason for implementing the new system.

“Creating a base program provides the needed structure for better serving market demand and capacity,” said Leah Anderson, vice president of Land O’Lakes Inc. member relations.

Mark and Diane Fjelstad, who milk 250 cows near Zumbro Falls, Minn., said a base system would halt their planned project of installing robots on their farm.

“It puts you in a tough spot when you’re trying to develop a plan for your farm to be more efcient,” Mark said. “On the lender side, they’re not going to lend us the nancial capabilities of doing something because of the risk of the unknown. The banks want a guarantee that 100 percent of our milk gets the full price.”

But dairyman Rick Smith was on board with the new price plan.

“Margins are tight not just for dairies, but for manufacturers. The co-ops really have to watch where they’re investing their money to get a return on it so members get a return as well,” said Smith, who milks 260 cows with his family near Adams, Minn.

Land O’Lakes has already implemented a similar base program in other regions – Bismarck, N.D. in September 2006, California in 2008 and the East Coast in January 2016.

April 9 Lucky to be alive Ebersviller survives attack by fresh cow VERGAS, Minn. – David Ebersviller considered himself lucky to be alive after a fresh cow attacked him on Feb. 12 on his 176-cow dairy he operates with his wife, Darla, near Vergas, Minn.

The incident broke three of his ribs, punctured one of his lungs, fractured his skull, broke his nose and shattered his right cheekbone.

It happened in a shed near the barn where he was checking on 35 close-up cows, one of which was calving. Ebersviller was about six feet away from the laboring second-calf cow when she attacked.

“She jumped up and came after me,” he said. “She pushed me to the ground like a bull would.”

The cow continually hit Ebersviller upwards of 30 times, despite his efforts to get away.

Hearing a banging, Darla went into the shed to nd the cause. Her scream from seeing David being beat up by the cow nally chased the animal away. She immediately called 911.

He was eventually taken to the hospital in Fargo, N.D., where he was given several units of blood and saline, and had surgery to repair his face.

“Every bone under my right eye was crumbled,” David said.

He spent several days in the ICU and the hospital, followed by physical therapy, and is on the road to recovery.

During that time, the Ebersvillers’ son, Derek, took over the responsibilities of the farm.

“He was a life saver,” Darla said. “He really stepped up.”

Ebersviller had no plans of selling the cows, but has changed his outlook on working with them. They now use the buddy system around the animals.

“You never fully understand how strong they are until they get you on the ground,” Ebersviller said. “I have a newfound respect for them.”

“I think we can say with condence that we have already hit the bottom of the milk prices. The farm milk checks are likely to be as bad as they are going to be this year,” said Mark Stephenson, Director of Dairy Policy Analysis at UW-Madison.

A global oversupply from a steady increase of milk production and growing inventory of products helped spiral the milk price downward earlier in the year.

A growing inventory of cheese and butter stocks in the United States continue to put additional pressure on the milk market. In the rest of the world, dairy stocks are in the form of excess milk powder.

“Cheese inventories have been building – it’s probably the biggest inventory we’ve ever had – but the inventory, in relation to use, is not a place we haven’t been before,” Stephenson said.

According to Stephenson, triggering the uptick in the Class III futures is either a combination of actual declines in milk production in other countries or the growth in milk production is slowing less than the demand for dairy products worldwide.

Aug. 13 Supporting the red, white and moo Krauses’ cow, Ditto, featured in Kemps Olympic commercial BUFFALO, Minn. – Along with cheering on Team USA, the Krause family had another reason to tune in to watch the 2016 summer Olympics – the commercials.

A Kemps Olympic-themed commercial featured Ditto, an 8-year-old cow from the Krause family’s 200-cow dairy near Buffalo, Minn.

A representative from the dairy company contacted the Krauses about the opportunity in early June. They needed two or three cows and a pasture for the commercial, but the family didn’t have that available.

“I told her we only had one cow we could use and no pasture. I thought they were going to pass us over since we didn’t have everything they wanted,” said Charles Krause, who farms together with his wife, Robyn, and their children, Andrew and Morgan.

Despite not tting the lming criteria, Kemps’ ad agency called Charles to meet the family’s beloved bovine, Ditto, who is Morgan’s show cow.

“I was in the middle of second-crop hay, but we got her on a halter and took her on the front lawn, which was next to a corn eld, for them,” Charles said.

Surprisingly to the Krauses, Ditto got the part.

At the end of June, the Krause family welcomed the lm crew to their farm to shoot Ditto’s part for the commercial. During the four hours they were at the farm, the crew took shots of Ditto eating with her head down and with her head up.

“She just stood there eating,” Charles said. “We had very little trouble at all with her. It was great. We didn’t know she was going to be that cooperative.”

Because of the non-disclosure agreement they signed, the Krauses couldn’t tell anyone about the lming until the rst commercial aired later in July.

“It was a fun way to promote our products,” Charles said.

Aug. 27 Harren survives bull attack FREEPORT, Minn. – June 22, the day after Father’s Day, is memorable for Jim Harren and his wife, Cheryl, and their 20-year-old daughter, Kaitlin; however, it’s not a day they would like to remember.

That day, the Harrens’ herd bull attacked Jim on their 60-cow dairy near Freeport, Minn.

That morning, after milking and cleaning the tiestall barn, Jim went out into the cow yard to round up the herd.

Standing in the barn waiting for the remainder of the herd, Kaitlin noticed that it was taking more time than usual to bring the cows inside.

As Kaitlin peered outside around the corner of the barn, Jim sat up covered with blood on his face and head on the other side of the now-busted four-board fence; the electric wire atop was still intact.

Kaitlin and a farm employee used a skidloader to chase the bull away and get Jim to safety. The family quickly took Jim to the hospital.

Miraculously, Jim only suffered a concussion, a cut to his head and external bruising. However, the recovery has been ongoing as two months after the accident, he had periodic dizzy spells and a possible torn meniscus.

While only supposed to be home for Father’s Day weekend, the Harrens’ sons – Bradley, 25, and Joshua, 21 – remained on the farm until their father was seeing improvements.

The Harren children, their hired hand and a neighbor, Sam Koetter, assisted with daily responsibilities on the farm, including putting hay up and cutting oats.

“Everyone really stepped up to help with chores,” Cheryl said. “We’re really thankful and proud they could help.”

A devastating ood for NE Iowa Dietzenback one of many farmers to have numerous acres under water FORT ATKINSON, Iowa – Areas of northeast Iowa received up to 10 inches of rain in about four to ve hours the night of Aug. 23 into the morning of Aug. 24.

Dan Dietzenbach had 5 inches fall on his elds on his 70-cow dairy near Fort Atkinson, Iowa.

“The water started trickling through [two sheds] and three to four hours later it was 3 feet deep. We got out what equipment we could and moved it to higher ground,” he said.

Dietzenbach’s family’s farm site sits long the Turkey River. A large amount of their farmland is at river bottom. Normally, the section of the river that is near their dairy is about 60 to 80 feet wide and 2 feet deep; however, after the excessive rain, the river swelled to over one-fourth of a mile wide and about 20 feet deep, Dietzenbach said.

Along with the loss of stored hay bales in a shed, Dietzenbach had 170 acres of corn that stood in water for at least a day. One week before the ooding, Dietzenbach’s yield checks came in at 240 to 260 bushels per acre. After the excessive rainfall, the insurance adjustor told him to plow it under.

“It’s just really discouraging and disgusting. I thought, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me. You’re out of your mind. There’s no way. It’s by far the best crop I’ve ever had,’” Dietzenbach said.

Dietzenbach thought he would have enough feed for the farm’s animals despite the ooded elds, but felt discouraged all the same.

Oct. 22 A Cinderella story Sheeknoll Farms wins reserve supreme champion at WDE ROCHESTER, Minn. – It was a fairytale ending to a perfect show season for the Sheehan family of Sheeknoll Farms, a 300-cow dairy near Rochester, Minn.

The family’s 6-year-old cow, Sheeknoll Durham Arrow, also known as Thomas, earned the title of grand champion Holstein and reserve supreme champion on Oct. 8 at World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis. During the show, the Sheehans hoped to place in the top half of the 6-year-old and older class. But little did they know, they were about to have the day of their lives.

While circling the ring, the judge pointed at Thomas, led by Jeannette Sheehan, to be pulled into rst place out of 18 cows.

“When they did that, the whole place cheered,” Jeannette said. “ It was amazing.”

Thomas and Jeannette eventually won their way to the grand champion selection.

“Out of the corner of my eye, I saw him [the judge] walk towards me,” Jeannette said. “My heart was pounding and I said, ‘Oh my gosh,’ out loud over and over. He came running up to me with his arm up and I jumped up to take his hand. It was amazing. We did it. I was so emotional. The judge hugged me so hard, I thought he would crush me.”

Finally, the big nale came when Thomas was named reserve supreme champion at the end of the night.

“When the spotlight hit me, it was magical,” Jeannette said. “It was so amazing to accomplish this. I had tears in my eyes.”

For the Sheehans, winning Expo was not just about Thomas. It was about all the work they have accomplished as a family.

“We work together to develop cows that pay the bills by milking well, but look good, too,” Jeannette said. “We’re proud of the fact that we bred her, fed her and showed her. This success shows that we are rst and foremost breeders.”

Nov. 12 Standing up for the U.S. Dairy farmers reect on time serving their country Three dairy farmers are part of a unique group of people in the United States – veterans.

“It’s a sense of pride [to serve the country] because there’s a statistic that we’re less than 1 percent of all Americans who do stand up, serve and do our time,” said Jake Dejno, who is still nishing his eight-year obligation in the Army in inactive reserve status until 2017 and milks 300 cows with his family near Independence, Wis. After graduating from high school in May 2008, Dejno enlisted in the Army and went to basic training in September 2009. During his time in the 593rd brigade, Dejno was deployed for 12 months to Iraq working as a mechanic on the base’s airport.

Although he was not in direct combat, Dejno sometimes worried about indirect re with mortars.

“I worked at night with a gun that would shoot anything in the sky coming our way. It would detect it most of the time,” Dejno said. “[When it wasn’t detected] sometimes you’d hear the bang and then the dirt, gravel or shrapnel bouncing off whatever building you were in. That got a little hairy every once in awhile.”

Dave Maschka also enlisted in the Army, but did so because he knew he would likely be drafted for the Vietnam War. “I enlisted so I could choose what I wanted,” said 71-year-old Maschka, who was 22 when he joined.

During his time, he spent one year in Vietnam in the 128th Assault Helicopter Company. In addition to nding supplies for the helicopters, Maschka also served as a door gunner on an M60 helicopter. Because of this, he received the nickname, Mac the Flying Farmer.

Now Maschka milks 200 cows with his son, Chad, on their dairy near Minnesota City, Minn.

Ralph McNamara didn’t have a choice to be the Army. He was drafted in his late teens serving as a rieman in the 7th Infantry Division from 1945 to 1946 during the World War II era. He was deployed to South Korea for 15 months where he was to keep the civilians safe.

The 91-year-old still helps his son, Dave, on his 90-cow dairy near Goodhue, Minn.

Dec. 10 Ready or not, change is here FARM 3.0 begins rst of the year ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Starting Jan. 1, producers who are part of a co-operative that is a part of the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) will have to adhere to the changes to the latest version (3.0) of the National Dairy Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) Program.

Ryan Bennett, senior director of industry and environmental affairs with NMPF explained the revisions during a seminar on Nov. 30 at the Minnesota Milk Conference and Expo in St. Cloud, Minn.

“We were worried about [the dairy industry’s] image in 2009, that’s why the program started,” Bennett said about FARM. “We continue improving the program because we’re still worried.”

The updates include creating a veterinarian-client-patient-relationship (VCPR) to better document the working relationship with a veterinarian and having a signed dairy cattle ethics and training agreement with employees. It also calls for more animal observations for lameness, body condition and hock and knee scoring.

The most concerning change to dairy farmers is the elimination of tail docking.

“The American Association of Bovine Practitioners called out the practice [of tail docking] and we were threatened by customers that other animal care programs would be created if we did not act,” Bennett said.

Throughout the year, producers will be requested to participate in an on-farm second-party evaluation to ensure phase one and phase two components are being met to comply with FARM 3.0.

Through this updated program, Bennett is condent consumers will nd greater trust in the dairy industry now and for years to come.

“With these, we can promote that we’re doing well to our customers,” Bennett said. “We’ll defend the defensible, but not the indefensible, to continue to have credibility.”

Pfaff transforms barn – Published Sept. 24, 2016 Summary: Every day, Kristin Pfaff is an active part of the hustle and bustle that makes up the daily life on her family’s 150-cow dairy farm in Alma Center, Wis. However, over the last few months, Pfaff’s plate has been even fuller as she has remodeled an old barn into the rustic event venue, Garden Valley Gatherings.

Three years ago, while mowing the lawn of the weathered barn across the road, Pfaff said she had a vision.

“I remember approaching my husband and saying, ‘We need to have events here,’” Pfaff said.

Kris�n Pfaff renovated a barn into a rus�c event venue, Garden Valley Gatherings, near Alma Center, Wis. Last spring, Pfaff began renovating the barn. The roof was replaced and new wooden, sliding doors were added around the barn. A deck was constructed and patio installed to add outdoor space.

The oors were redone inside the barn, and before long, Pfaff's event barn had become a reality.

“People come out here to enjoy the country scene, see the stars and smell the fresh air,” Pfaff said. “People get sick of the rat race in the city – we offer somewhere quaint to allow them to feel freedom.”

Update: Since then, Pfaff has hosted two weddings and several area events.

She said the response she has received from the barn has been humbling.

“My most inspiring moment was dispersing the cheese curds during the wedding dance and a grandmother from Chicago had never had the opportunity to enjoy one of Wisconsin’s favorite cheese types,” Pfaff said. “She enjoyed learning this cheese came from the plant where we shipped our milk while I was able to show our animals grazing in the adjacent eld.”

Currently, Pfaff is attending bridal fairs to advertise the venue for the upcoming wedding season. She is looking forward to hosting several area bands this summer and to plant a small eld of corn to host a corn maze next fall.

Update: Perry, Chris, and Gary Beranek have continued to grow their registered Holstein herd since moving to their new site north of New Ulm, Minn.

With heifers freshening, the brothers are now milking about 130 cows, with more than 150 on site. Tank average is pushing 87 pounds and Perry commented that SCC and breeding efciency are “hanging right in there.” Hundreds of people enjoyed touring the facilities when the Beraneks hosted the Minnesota Holstein Field Day July 23. The farm continues to rely on family labor, with the newest “future employee” arriving in June, when Gary and Kara welcomed daughter, Whitney.

5. Rare winter storm ends in disaster – Published Jan. 16, 2016 Summary: Dairy farmers in Texas and New Mexico lost nearly 35,000 dairy cows after winter storm Goliath ripped through the region on Dec. 26-27, 2015.

Update: Dairy farmer Joe Osterkamp lost nearly 200 cows in the rare storm on his 2,900-cow dairy near Muleshoe, Texas.

“We were fortunate that’s all we lost,” Osterkamp said. “Some guys lost nearly 800. Everyone was different.”

It took a while, but Osterkamp and other farmers affected were able to get things cleaned up. They also were able to get their herd sizes back to normal a few months after the storm.

“Some farmers had to buy more cattle if they lost a large number of cows, but our heifer replacement program grew our herd,” Osterkamp said.

Despite seeing a drop in production after the storm, Osterkamp said his production was back to normal after the rst few months. Although they experienced such a severe storm last year, Osterkamp said not much has changed other than having more of the necessities on hand.

“Instead of changing management of the cows or changing the facilities, that is how we’re preparing,” Osterkamp said.

Even though it has been a year, Osterkamp is grateful to have things back to normal.

“We’re back on track,” he said.

7. Watching where he steps – Published Sept. 10, 2016 Summary: Jake Stelling lost part of his left leg during a farm accident Jan. 8, 1994, while trying to x the silo unloader.

Despite now having to do things a little differently, that hasn’t deterred him from farming. Since the incident, Stelling has been farming with the use of a prosthetic leg. The 43-year-old farms together with his cousin, Brent, on their 300-cow dairy near Millville, Minn.

8. A dairy true to its name – Published Aug. 27, 2016 Summary: The Schloneger family milks 950 cows near Shell Lake, Wis. Their herd recorded a 30,500-pound rolling herd average with fat and protein percentages of 4.24 and 3.5.

Update: Since Aug. 27, Legacy Farms has continued to maintain their excellent production at 104 pounds per cow, per day. The herd is currently 116 cows larger for the time being after a neighboring farm lost their barn and milking parlor to a re, and the Schlonegers took their cows in. around 90 pounds per day. During December classication, two cows scored EX-91 and three 2-year-old cows scored with 90-point udders in the past year as well.

9. A Moore productive herd – Sept. 10, 2016 Summary: Ever since he was a child, Adam Moore had dreamed of farming alongside his father, Jeff. Soon after graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2014, his dream came to fruition as he joined his father as the farm’s co-owner. In the last two years, the father-son duo has expanded their Gratiot, Wis., farm to 165 cows with the addition of a parlor and freestall barn, which was largely designed by Adam, himself.

Plans began in December 2013, and by April, they were breaking ground on their dream. The result was a 102- by 217-foot, four-row freestall barn. The barn is naturally ventilated with 148 sand-bedded stalls and has 180 headlocks with a sprinkler system. Additionally, the barn contains a 40-foot fresh cow and hospital pen.

Manure is held in a manure pit with a 35-day holding capacity, which was also constructed during the building process.

“The cows are extremely comfortable, and therefore, production is as good as we could hope for,” Jeff said.

In September, the Moores saw production increase an average of eight pounds to a herd average of 88.5 pounds per day as well as the rolling herd average improved by 3,000 pounds to 28,000 since completing the barn two years prior.

Update: Their production continued to improve throughout the rest of 2016, ending the year with a herd average of 28,368 and 90.9 pounds per cow while milking twice a day. In the coming year, the Moores plan to continue making updates to the farm as they add headlocks to the heifer shed.

It was an exciting year for the Moores both on and off the farm as Adam married his wife, Ashley, in September. Ashley completed her rst semester of pharmacy school while Brooke completed her rst undergraduate semester studying dairy science, both at UW-Madison.

Connor graduated from UW-Madison with an engineering degree in December and currently works for Hormel Foods in Freemont, Neb. “It was a great year for both crops and production,” Jeff said. “We are very fortunate.”

Trevor Mahr purchased Rebecca Krueger’s herd of 70 cows ve years ago. Today, Krueger conƟnues to work for Mahr on the dairy near Stanley, Wis. 10. From farmhand to owner – Published April 23, 2016 Summary: Five years ago, Rebecca Krueger and Trevor Mahr were just neighbors helping each other on neighboring dairy farms in Stanley, Wis. Following a set of difcult circumstances, however, Mahr has since purchased Krueger’s herd of 70 cows, allowing them to work together in a way he never imagined. Krueger and her late husband, Tim, rst moved to Stanley, Wis. in 1997. When Tim was diagnosed with cancer in April 2011, the Kruegers knew it would affect both their family and the farm.

“At the time, we were milking a total of 110 cows … When [Tim] became ill, the other farm was for sale, we sold off 40 cows and moved the rest back home,” Krueger said.

Mahr began working for the Kruegers part-time in the summer of 2013. Towards the end of December 2014, the Kruegers discussed selling the herd with Mahr.

Tim's condition worsened, and when he passed away shortly thereafter in early February 2015, Mahr knew his decision was clear. After graduating from Short Course in March, Mahr purchased the herd of 70 cows in May at the age of 19.

Update: Krueger continues to work for Mahr today.

Mahr said not much has changed on the farm as the new year begins, but they have settled into a comfortable rhythm.

“Everything has kind of fallen into place,” Mahr said. “I’m still learning from my mom, dad and Rebecca, too. Things are going smooth and I am getting the hang of things.”

New Year’s resolutions I’ve heard the most lettuce salads are consumed in the rst week of January when people start their new healthy diets. By the second week, I think sales of lettuce would drop off a bit and by the end of the month sales would dip back to normal levels. I know we’re not helping any of those numbers.

Mark and the kids think a lettuce salad is gloried silage. It doesn’t matter how often I put a lettuce salad on the table, I end up eating most of it. So, I skip lettuce salads with our meals. I try to nd other ways of eating healthy, especially after all the holiday treats I’ve packed away.

One of my favorite things to make for the winter months is granola. I know it is just gloried oatmeal, but it helps me to think I’m keeping my resolution of eating healthier. I like to mix granola with a cup of vanilla yogurt. I put this in the refrigerator overnight. Before I head out to the barn in the morning, I will grab my cup of yogurt. By this time the oatmeal has softened up and it just slides down. I will also use this granola for hot oatmeal. I will add it to boiling water or milk and cook it just like oatmeal. I don’t have to add a thing because all the avorings are already in the mix.

1 cup applesauce 4 eggs 2 tsp. baking soda 2 Tbsp. baking powder (yes, tablespoons) 2 tsp. salt 2 tsp. vanilla 4 cups our

fruit 1 cup white vanilla chips

Heat oven to 325 degrees. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Whisk maple syrup, sugar, vanilla and salt in a large bowl. Whisk in oil. Fold in oatmeal and almonds until thoroughly coated. Spread into even layer on baking sheet. Pack down.

Bake 40 to 45 minutes until lightly browned. Cool on wire rack for one hour. Break granola into pieces. Add fruit and chips. Store in air tight container for up to two weeks. Makes 9 cups.

Instead of buying all those granola bars, you can make your own and wrap them up for the barn. The guys love to grab a bar after milking to help hold them over till breakfast time. I just cut the bars in serving sizes and wrap them in plastic wrap. I will bring a Ziploc bag of bars out to the barn.

Granola Bars 2 cups old fashioned oats 3/4 cup toasted wheat germ 3/4 cup chopped walnuts 3/4 cup dried cranberries or blueberries or other dried fruits 2 Tbsp. brown sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup vegetable oil 2 large egg whites, beaten In a glass pie plate, spread oatmeal; microwave on high for 4 minutes until fragrant. Cool. Line a 9x13 pan with

I love my mother’s banana bread, but sometimes I need to cut back on the butter. This recipe doesn’t use a bit of butter or oil to hold it together.

By letting the sugar dissolve in the bananas and swapping out applesauce for the butter, the bread will hold together.

It is a different taste than my mom’s, but now I can put slabs of butter on my slice of banana bread without feeling guilty.

Low Cholesterol Banana Bread 6 bananas 2 cups sugar

Mash bananas in large bowl. Stir in sugar. Let stand 15 minutes for sugar to dissolve. Add applesauce, eggs and vanilla. Mix dry ingredients together. Add to banana mixture. Pour into greased and oured loaf pans. Bake 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes before removing from pan.

Makes 3 loaves.

I know we’re just done with the Christmas season, but Lent will be coming up next month. Do you have any special treats or stories for Fat Tuesday? It is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. The story goes that Polish women would make panski to use up the eggs, sugar and butter before the start of the Lenten season. I have a pan of candy bars I like to make before the start of lent as a last hurrah. Please share your stories and recipes with me.

3 Tbsp. sugar 1 cup of milk 2 eggs

Filling 2/3 cup milk 2 Tbsp. honey 3/4 cup brandy 1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 lb. ground walnuts 1/4 cup butter 4 egg whites

Dough: Put milk in kettle with flour and sugar, heat until lukewarm. Take dry yeast and add to milk. Stir in until close to dissolved. Let raise for half hour.

Work butter into flour and add salt, mix in. Take eggs and separate, put whites in refrigerator. Put egg yolks in flour mixture and mix in. Take milk and yeast mixture and put it in with the flour mixture, mix lightly. Refrigerate six hours or overnight. Take dough out and let set for about one hour before rolling out.

Filling: Put milk, sugars, honey and butter in kettle. Cook until mixed together. Take off burner and add nuts and brandy. Stir in and then add whipped egg whites last. Just blend in – don’t overmix. Let rise 1 to 2 hours. Roll dough out thin enough and spread filling mixture over evenly. Roll up and put into a greased pan. Let rise until desired height. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 to 1.5 hours.

Raised Doughnuts 2 Tbsp. yeast 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 lb. butter (1/2 cup) 4 egg yolks 7 cups of flour

1/2 tsp. vanilla 1 whole egg 2 cups milk 1 tsp. salt Crisco

Dissolve yeast in lukewarm milk and add 2 cups flour. Let stand in warm place for about 30 minutes and then beat eggs, sugar, vanilla, salt and butter until light. Add this to the dough mixture. Add 5 cups of flour, cover and allow to raise for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size. Roll out on floured board and roll the dough about 1/2-inch thick. Cut out with doughnut cutter, cover and let rise again until light. Drop into warm Crisco or lard and fry on both sides until golden brown. Serve.

Blueberry Mufns 1 egg 2 cups flour 1 tsp. salt 3/4 cup milk

1/2 cup sugar 3/4 cup blueberries 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1 Tbsp. baking powder

Beat egg in bowl, stir in milk and oil, add thawed blueberries. Measure dry ingredients in a separate bowl, add all at once to the liquid ingredients. Stir just until the flour is moistened (batter will be lumpy). Line muffin tins with paper baking cups and fill about 2/3 full. Bake 20 minutes at 400 degrees.
