Junk family perseveres through accidents

Wife steps into roles while husband, employee recover

EPWORTH, Iowa – Many dairy farm families are hoping for a better 2020 than what they experienced in 2019. That is especially true for Jeremy and Melanie Junk of Epworth.

They began 2019 by purchasing the route of a retiring IBA dealer, operating the business in addition to managing their 85-cow dairy. But a car accident in May put Jeremy out of commission for a good share of the summer and fall.

Then, their full-time summer employee, Kendra Johnson, had a serious car accident

three days later, leaving Melanie in charge of the farm, the IBA route and the family that includes Nathan, 19, Keaton, 10, Lexi, 4, and Ivan, 3.

“We survived,” Melanie said. “I don’t know how. But, it wouldn’t have been possible without our amazing friends, family, neighbors and customers.”

The Junks milk registered Holsteins, Jerseys, Brown Swiss and Ayrshires, and raise the herd’s heifers. They have a double-6 herringbone parlor and employ three part-time employees while also keeping their children involved with chores.

They crop farm 155 acres of corn and hay, having moved to their current location from Wisconsin in 2009. They also do custom cow oating and square baling.

Jeremy’s accident happened when a driver ran a stop sign at an intersection a short distance from the farm, causing a collision. The other driver was not seriously injured, but Jeremy suffered a concussion and two broken vertebrae in his neck. He spent three days in the hospital followed by months of rehabilitation that continues today.

It was a head-on accident

on her way home from the Junks’ farm that put Kendra in the hospital. The student in the University of WisconsinMadison Farm and Industry Short Course was the ideal fallback person to help after Jeremy’s accident, but Kendra had a collapsed lung and injuries to her mouth and foot.

She spent four days in the hospital and had a six-week recovery, but returned to the farm as quickly as possible.

For Melanie, it was an immediate crisis.

“I had to gure out what to do with the kids, the cows, IBA and the bookwork, and get someone to stay with Jeremy,” she said. “I’ve learned how important it is to write things down – like the cow rations and keeping good records with our customers.”

came to the rescue. Melanie’s brothers helped with the ďƒželd work. She found more part-time help with milking, housework and child care. “I didn’t cook a meal for 12 weeks,â€? she said, referencing the food that showed up at the family’s door.

Still, halfway through the experience, she wondered how it would all get done.

Jeremy said the worst part for him was not being able to do anything to help with the family businesses. Even now, he suffers from the effects of the crash. He has trouble ďƒžnding a comfortable way to sleep and cannot grip things the way he had previously.

“My mobility will never be what it was,” he said. “But at least I’m here to complain about it.”

In the rst week after the accident, Melanie called farms on the route to delay their stops until the weekend, running Saturday and Sunday to avoid getting behind schedule. The Junks had purchased River-Divide IBA after working with the former owner for more than a year. Jeremy was meant to be the primary route driver, replacing a previous off-farm job driving dump trucks.

But now Melanie, who had kept the books for the business, became the route representative.

“I used lots of Google Maps and made a lot of phone calls to Jeremy,” she said.

Get to know Kelsey Biel of Harmony, Minnesota

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in?

I am involved in 4-H and FFA. I have been in 4-H for 10 years. In 4-H, I show Jerseys along with registered and grade Holsteins. I am involved with public demonstrations, and I am also involved in the dairy quiz bowl project. I have been active in FFA for ve years. I have held ofcer positions as the treasurer, ofcer at large, president and currently serve as secretary. I am involved in dairy judging for both organizations. In FFA, I am currently Region VIII president.

What is something you have learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? I have learned to always work hard and put my best foot forward. In 4-H, I show with my family. I have lots of younger siblings. No matter how good or bad things end up, if you put hard work into it, that is all that matters.

Who do you look up to? My dad. He is my biggest supporter and is always encouraging me with FFA and 4-H. He is one of the hardest working people I know, but he never forgets to ask all of us how our day was or if we need anything.

Why are you involved in these activities/organizations, and what is your favorite? I can’t pick a favorite between 4-H and FFA. Both have brought me so many priceless moments. I have always had a passion for dairy, and being a part of both organizations has helped me learn more about the industry and given me great opportunities.

Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. One of the best experiences in FFA is when my dairy judging team earned a trip to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, for the All American Dairy Youth Judging Competition. I got to experience this trip with two of my closest friends as well as my younger sister, Klaudia. From ying to Pennsylvania to our team winning in oral reasons and overall, this trip was lled with nothing but joy and laughter.

Tell us something about yourself that many people do not know. One thing I learned from my trip to Harrisburg is that I really do not like ying.

What are your career aspirations?

Next year, I plan to attend the University of Minnesota to study agricultural education. I hope to someday become an agriculture teacher.

Tell us some of your duties on the farm. My main job is to feed the calves.

We almost always have a steady 40 calves in the calf barn at a time. My siblings and I feed the milk, water, grain and feed the weaned calves. Then in the summer, I help with a lot of eld work. I haul loads of hay, mow or merge. I also help with hauling manure and hauling loads of corn during the fall.

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? To help people who are struggling with hunger. Everyone should have access to clean water and a healthy and nutritious meal.
