Greetings, Pennsylvania Holstein Breeders The June Profiles is the special summer issue where we recognize the Hall of Fame Inductees, Don Adams and Wilmer Hostetter and the Pioneer award winner, Frank Reist, Sr. Other points of interest are the PA Holstein Convention review, the PA Holstein Spring Show results and several sale reports. The Lebanon County Holstein Breeders will be hosting a self guided tour Debbie Cornman of four farms, Gem-Rock Holsteins, Kraig and Meranda Sellers Family; Furnace-Hill Holsteins, Joel and Chrissy Krall Family; HimmelValley Holsteins, Dale and Kynel Himmelberger; and Klindell Holsteins, John and Sharon Kline. Best wishes and safe travels to everyone who will be attending the National Holstein Convention in Washington State. Thoughts and prayers go out to the families of Calvin M. Will and Dennis G. Kauffman for the loss of their family member. Continue to pray for the many families, friends and neighbors who are experiencing health and/or hard times. I would like to thank you for the get-well wishes while I recover from hip replacement surgery in April. I am feeling so much better and look forward to getting out to some of the summer events. Ken’s Comments by Ken Raney On behalf of the members of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association, we hope you enjoy our Profiles magazine while learning more about our members, their cows and our Association activities. Our members and their interest in the Holstein Cow is what makes our Association strong and viable. Pennsylvania Holstein will be holding our state picnic this year on Saturday, July 8, 2017. It is being hosted by the Lebanon County Holstein Association with four farms open for visitation. Farms available to visit on Saturday morning include: Himmel-Valley Holsteins, Dale Himmelberger Family; Furnace Hill Holsteins, Joel Krall Family and GemRock Holsteins, Kraig Sellers Family. An afternoon picnic lunch, herd visit and an opportunity to visit with our many picnic sponsors and supporters will be hosted by Klinedell Holsteins, John Kline Family. It will be a great day to visit with Holstein friends, see a number of outstanding Holstein herds with different management styles. A picnic meal registration form and much more information can be found elsewhere in Profiles, also on our website at: www.paholsteins.com and in the farm press. We hope to see a lot of our Holstein friends in Lebanon County on July 8th. Pennsylvania Holstein Association is proud to support the candidacy of John Burket for re-election to the Holstein USA Board of Directors. The Association is also pleased to support James Burdette as he is running for VicePresident of Holstein Association USA Inc. They are both outstanding leaders who have good ideas to keep Holstein USA moving forward. We wish them well as they present themselves and their ideas at the Holstein Convention in Washington. Good luck to you, and all the kids and grandkids who are showing this year. We have seven calves leased out to five 4Hers so it will be fun to watch and see how they do. And I don’t have to do the work! Have a great summer and I hope to see many of you at your county picnics. – Ken Umble

Well, the warm spring weather has finally arrived here in mid-May and it has gotten dry enough to plant corn and beans and even bale a little dry hay. Now everything is turning green and we have had a foretaste of the summer heat to come. It’s been a bit hectic here at home with yet another transition to a new renter for our Glen Valley dairy. Marilyn said I needed to get away and clear my head so I took a quick trip to our hunting camp in Sullivan County to relax, get a little quiet time and do some turkey hunting. Only to find out that Chief Oil and Gas had just begun to drill for gas on the well pad next to our cabin lawn  So much for the quiet time and hunting with all that noise nearby! Some of you from that area know what I’m talking about. Oh, well, the change of scenery was still beneficial. So on to Plan B – get this article done for Debbie. It’s just like the farm – there’s always another job waiting. So maybe you, like me, just need to lighten up sometimes and laugh a little. Our hunting camp members receive a monthly magazine called the Penn Lines where Earl Pitts, American, writes a page every issue (often the only page I read). This time Earl is speaking about our colorful English language and some of these descriptions are just too good not to pass on. On things being tough to do – he says it’s like “nailing Jello to a tree” or “nailing a fried egg to a wall” or “trying to stuff a wildcat through a knothole backwards” or “harder than pushin’ a chain - and keeping it straight!” In describing the cold temperature how ‘bout it being “colder than a cast-iron commode on the shady side of an iceberg?” And I hope you don’t have an in-law who Earl describes as “if you put his brains in a gnat’s navel, they would rattle around like a BB in a boxcar” or if “brains were gasoline, he wouldn’t have enough to drive an ant’s go-cart around a Cheerio.” And was it Ken Rainey who said that “if you want to know how to succeed in life you “gotta fight like the third monkey goin’ up the ramp to the ark”?! Then here’s more real life farm humor that actually happened to our neighbors (you know who you are). The Farmer was putting boluses in a cow’s uterus with his 5 year old daughter looking on. She stood there a while intently observing and taking it all in until he was finished and then commented, “Oh my, and all that just because she wouldn’t take her medicine!” From that time on, according to her mother, the little one never refused to take her medicine! Hey, when you see Dave Lentz next, check out his new wheels that he’s calling the “Dirty Bull” and report back to me if he’s not keeping it clean. His old buggy had over 270,000 on it so he was due another one. 8 - June 2017 - PA PROFILES

Pennsylvania Holstein Awards The Pennsylvania Holstein Association presents the Hall of Fame Award to a member of the association recognizing an individual or couple for their achievements and contributions to the Holstein Dairy Industry as well as their involvement and leadership in other agricultural and community activities.

Donald Quincy Adams Hall of Fame Inductee The Pennsylvania Holstein Association presents the Hall of Fame Award to a member of the Association recognizing an individual or couple for their achievements and contributions to the Holstein Dairy Industry as well as their involvement and leadership in other agricultural and community activities. Many of you will know our first inductee into the Pennsylvania Holstein Association Hall of Fame tonight from his many years working for R. Austin Backus as a ringman. Donald Quincy Adams was born on June 15, 1925, to parents Don Quincy Adams and Isabel Kauffman Adams, on their dairy farm outside of Mifflintown, Pa in Juniata County. Don graduated from Juniata Joint High School in 1943. From that time until 1956, except for the years 1950-1952 when he served in the US Army, Don owned and operated a large chicken house raising 10,000 broiler chickens. Don married Margaret (Peggy) Sieber on Dec 30, 1954. They have three children: Mitzi Ann Adams Jacob, Susan Lynette Adams Komlenic, and Donald Harry Adams, along with seven grand children. In 1956 Don started his own dairy when he purchased a farm outside of Port Royal, and in 1957 bought his first registered calf at the Garden Spot Sale. Don’s love of registered cattle 10 - June 2017 - PA PROFILES

was inspired when he and his father attended the 1947 National Convention Sale that was held in Massachusetts that year. His father purchased the third high seller at the sale. A picture of the cow, along with Don and his father are in Horace Backus’s Seed Stock 1 book. It was at this sale that Don met and became close friends with Charles and Horace Backus. In the following years, Don worked the ring at many of the Backus sales. The following is a quote from Horace Backus: “Don loved breeding registered Holsteins, and he was very good at it, very good. Perhaps his greatest attribute was his loyalty. He is intensely loyal to the people and things he believes in, especially to the breeders and members of the County, State and National Holstein Associations.” Don had two dispersals. The first was in 1980 with two cows selling for $10,000. The sale averaged just over $3,000 and was one of the top dispersal sales for that year in the country. Horace shared the following story about booking the first sale for Don. “Every year during the holidays, Don would call the Backus office and catch up with Charles and Horace. Don knew that Horace traveled south to attend the PA Farm Show dairy cattle show each year, and told Horace he was thinking of having a dispersal and wanted him to stop on his way to the Farm show, and look the herd over, which Horace did. Horace said the herd looked great, and after inspecting the herd, Don and Peggy asked him to stay for dinner and stay overnight. The room that Horace stayed in was on the second floor, which at that time was not heated. We all know what the temperature can be in January, but Horace made it through the night ok, and made his way to the Farm Show the next day. However, when Horace talked to Don about specifics for the dispersal Don decided it was not yet time to sell the herd. Well the same thing happened for the next five years until 1980 when

A side note to that story is Don had some Kingpin semen he sold after his sale and used the money to heat the second story of his house.” Don also had a second dispersal in 1986. Both sales drew large crowds, a testament to Don’s reputation as a breeder and friend. A few special cows to Don over the years were: DQA Elevation Spice EX-90, one of the $10,000 high sellers in his first sale DQA Apollo Ivanhoe Suzanne EX-90 and her dam DQA Burley Laird Susie EX-91 of which many good cows came out of this family. Kish Creek Monitor Spotty EX-90 was a cow Don bought in partnership with three other breeders. Approximately $100,000 in offspring sales came from this cow. Don quit milking in 1990, but he still farmed the ground and kept heifers. He continued to own a few milk cows, boarding them at various dairies. One such cow was DQA Rubens VanessaRed-Et EX-92, who made her home at Pencroft Holsteins. In 2008 Vanessa won the Red & White aged cow class at Harrisburg and was nominated AllAmerican Red & White Aged Cow that year. Don and Peggy sold the farm in 2014 and moved down the road about a mile from the farm. Don’s love of purebred Holsteins still remains as he still owns several head, boarded at

nearby farms. On June 13, 2015, a surprise 90th birthday party was planned for Don at Paul and Angie Neer’s farm in Belleville. The celebration was held in conjunction with Paul’s 25th hoof trimming anniversary. Horace Backus was planning to attend, but due to a family emergency was unable to a make it to the party. In his absence, Horace mailed a mint condition 1936 Royal Brentwood sale catalog with the prices marked to be presented to Don at the party. This was especially meaningful to Don, as the manager of the Brentwood sale was Dunloggin Farm manager Paul Misner, who was a close friend and mentor to Don. Over the years, Don served on his county Holstein board, as a sales rep for PHA, and for many years on the advisory board of the First National Bank of Mifflintown. Cows were an important part of Don’s life, but it is his 60 plus year marriage to Peggy, his children, and grand children and the many friends he made over the years that have meant the most to Don. Congratulations to Mr. Donald Q. Adams 2017 Pa Holstein Hall of Fame Inductee.

Wilmer Hostetter Hall of Fame Inductee The Pennsylvania Holstein Association presents the Hall of Fame Award to a member of the Association recognizing an individual or couple for their achievements and contributions to the Holstein Dairy Industry as well as their involvement and leadership in other agricultural and community activities. Wilmer Hostetter was born Feb 8, 1938. He has been married to the love of his life, Joyce for 58 years. The couple has 4 sons, 11 grand children, and 10 great grandchildren. Wilmer was the youngest of seven children. At age 14 Wilmer worked for his older brother, milking his 33 cows and tending to the dairy. Wilmer educated himself by reading dairy magazines. During that time, he married Joyce and continued working for his brother for 2 more years. In a Farm Credit pamphlet Wilmer and Joyce saw a farm for rent in Oxford, Pennsylvania. The couple rented the 140-acre farm for 3 years before purchasing the farm in 1963.

Having grade herd, they purchased registered cattle from different farms, thus the new prefix Joy-Wil came into play. A cow was purchased from neighbor Chris Strohmaier who would help build the Joy-Wil legacy. This cow was Ivanhoe Millie. The couples 4 sons all shared an interest in farming and in good cattle. The family decided to send Ivanhoe Millie to Canada for embryo transplant. Flushing was a new concept at this time and Canada was the closest option. In 1972 Wilmer and Joyce purchased a neighboring farm for their growing business and family. Wilmer also got into the heifer business and at this time was expanding that as well, traveling as far as Wisconsin by train to purchase cattle. Wilmer, along with 9 other dairymen, joined together to form Brandywine Valley Breeders. The 10 members invested time and money proving bulls. Their passion was worth their time, as three bulls went to stud, Round Oak Electron went to Atlantic, Vigo Starlite Elevate went to Sire Power, and Vigo Standout Reflection went to Curtiss. Wilmer housed some of the bulls at their farm, and the family shared a story about an incident that happened on the farm involving one of the bulls that I would like to share with you. Apparently one of the bulls got out of this pen, and was heading for the road. Wilmer jumped in the pickup truck to head the bull off. Well when the bull saw Wilmer in the truck he headed straight for the side door of the truck. Thinking quickly Wilmer wound up the door window to protect himself from the charging bull. Well this worked as the bull stopped just short of the door and just ended up putting a small ding in the door. After getting the bull back to his pen, the family laughed at the quick thinking of Wilmer to protect himself from the bull. Flushing cattle became more popular and Wilmer took advantage of the new technology. Ivanhoe Millie lived to be 18 years old, and became a family pet and had full range of the pasture and facilities, even though her milking days were long gone. Over the years, Joy-Wil prefix has bred approximately 45 Excellent cows and developed others that were purchased. They also bred 11 Gold Medal Dams. Joy-Wil Elevation Patsy sold for $50,000 at the 1981 AllAmerican Sale. Four years later the

Joyce and Wilmer Hostetter Hall of Fame family purchased Patsy back through the National Convention Sale. To their amazement, Patsy walked to her original stall squeezing into the stall and pushing the other cow out. The Joy-Wil BAA topped 107%, and Wilmer received the Progressive Breeder Award numerous times. Wilmer’s heifer business continued to grow. He rented 9 different farms housing up to 1,500 heifers. Working with PHA Wilmer sold heifers internationally to Mexico and Puerto Rico. In 1992 Joy-Wil had their first dispersal. Fifty members of the Millie Patsy family sold out of a total of 138 head. The sale averaged over $2,900, with the highest cow selling for $30,000. While growing their reputation for good pedigree cattle, Wilmer and Joyce started a grain business. In 1976 they built their first grain bin. It was a 90,000 bushel bin. They had 10 customers at that time. Over the years Hostetter Grain grew, and two sons, Bill and Bernie worked full time with the grain business. The other two sons, Barry and John continued to manage the dairies. The herd dispersal allowed Barry to join the grain business. Today Hostetter Grain has over 4,000 customers and storage of 5 million bushels at three different locations. In 2002 the second and final dairy dispersal was held. The sale average $2,259. 157 animals were sold with 40 of them from the Millie Patsy family. Wilmer’s son John did purchase back a Joy-Wil bred animal in 2003. Through that one heifer John has continued the Joy-Wil legacy. Wilmer’s grandchildren have showed Joy-Wil cattle at the Chester County 4-H June 2017 - PA PROFILES - 11

show over the past 10 years. Wilmer’s granddaughter Paige won Chester County 4-H Supreme Champion in 2009 and granddaughter Brooke won the Senior 2-Year Old class at the AllAmerican Dairy Show in Harrisburg in 2016 with Joy-Wil Atwood Merry. Wilmer served on numerous boards including, Oxford Area School Board, Fulton Bank Advisory board, Farm Credit Board, and the Chester County Holstein Board. Wilmer has also served the community through his church and charity organizations. He has been a member of the Mt Vernon Christian Church for over 50 years, were he has served many positions. He has served on the Black Rock Christian Retreat board and with Partners in Evangelism. Wilmer has contributed his success to the Lord, his family and those around him. As Wilmer said, “It takes a team of people to get something accomplished” Congratulations to you, Wilmer Hostetter 2017 Hall of Fame Award inductee.

Frank Reist, Sr. Pioneer Memorial Award The Pennsylvania Holstein Pioneer Memorial Award is given posthumously to an individual for their contribution to the Holstein Industry at the local, state and National levels. The 2017 Pioneer Memorial Award goes to Frank Reist, Sr. Frank Reist, Sr. owned and operated Ferndale Farms, in Lebanon County, which was founded by his Grandfather Frank Fernsler in 1913. The herd was well known locally, statewide and nationally for top quality registered Holsteins which featured Dunloggin bloodlines. Frank served many years on the Lebanon County Holstein Board of Directors and did serve as President of the Board. He also served on the Lebanon Fair board, and helped start the county Holstein show, which today is one of the top county shows in Pennsylvania. Growing breakfast participation is key to increasing milk and dairy sales in schools. Schools that offer “Breakfast After the Bell” – offering breakfast outside the traditional cafeteria setting – see breakfast participation skyrocket – to as high as 90 percent of students! Since each meal is served with milk, and often another dairy item, like a cheese stick or yogurt cup, more students eating school breakfast means more dairy sales. American Dairy Association North East (ADA North East) helps convince districts to adopt these programs by holding educational summits targeting decision-makers like principals and school administrators. This spring, these meetings were held at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh– home of the Pittsburgh Steelers – and Lincoln Financial Field in U.S. Average Philadelphia – home of the Philadelphia Eagles. Helping school districts identify enticing new ways to serve dairy also helps increase product sales. A pilot - held in districts throughout New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania - where schools offered yogurt smoothies or parfaits results in a 236 percent increase in yogurt sales.

LEBANON COUNT Y Pennsylvania Holstein Association 2017 Summer Picnic - July 8, 2017 Pennsylvania Holstein Association and the Lebanon County Holstein Association are working together to host this event for Holstein enthusiasts from all parts of Pennsylvania and our neighboring states. The day will start with three (3) herds open for visitors beginning at 9:30 a.m and will be open until about 12:30pm. Those herds include: Himmel-Valley Holsteins - Dale & Kynel Himmelberger Family – 2316 Heilmandale Road, Lebanon, PA Furnace Hill Holsteins - Joel & Chrissy Krall Family – 480 Shaeffer Road, Lebanon, PA Gem-Rock Holsteins - Kraig & Meranda Sellers Family – 1120 S. White Oak Street, Lebanon, PA Picnic visitors will have the opportunity to stop at any of the herds you wish to see, visit with the owners, see their cows and what updates they have made to their facilities and management practices. There will be a picnic lunch (a ticket must be purchased in advance - by June 26th - for lunch) served beginning at 1:00p.m. at Klinedell Holsteins - John & Sharon Kline Family – 641 S. Ramona Road, Myerstown, PA. There will be an opportunity to visit with our many picnic sponsors at Klinedell Holsteins. There will also be time to view the excellent Klinedell herd of cows and their newly renovated milking facilities. Klinedell Holsteins also serves as satellite facility for Trans-Ova Genetic and visitors will have the opportunity to see their satellite laboratory facilities.  Obituary  Dennis G. Kauffman

and Zella Kauffman of Souderton, PA. He was preceded in death by his sister Zolla Kauffman. Memorial service was held May 30, 2017 at the Gingrich’s Mennonite Church, Lebanon, PA In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Jubilee Ministries, 235 S. 12th Street, Lebanon, PA 17042.

Dennis Gehl Kauffman, 64, of Lebanon passed away on May 24, 2017. He was the husband of Carol E. Kauffman, with whom he celebrated 44 years in marriage. Dennis was born on June 21, 1952 in Minot, North Dakota to the late Harold and Wilma (Kropf) Kauffman. Dennis was a dairy farmer and enjoyed working with the cows and animals on his farm. He was a member of Gingrich’s Mennonite Church in Lebanon and in recent years also attended Annville Church of the Brethren. He enjoyed choral and classical music and was a member of the Franconia-Lancaster Chorale for many years. Many people appreciated his dedication to roadside trash clean up in South Annville Township. He also was a volunteer worker at Jubilee Ministries. Surviving in addition to his wife are his children, Melissa Bomgardner of Palmyra, Melanie and her husband Glenn Barnhart, Jr., of Palmyra, Melonica Hoffer of Andover, NY, grandchildren Brianna, Mikayla, Malayna, Leah, Nathan, Jesse, Rachel, Kendal, Taylor, and Derrick great grandchildren, Grayson and Amber, siblings, Wayne Kauffman of Pandora, Ohio, Elton Kauffman of Blue Sky, Alberta, Canada, Verla Haas of Blue Sky, Alberta, Canada,

Will; daughter Elizabeth Ann Will Custer; brothers: Paul and Donald Will; and sister Pauline McGarvey. Survived by his wife Mary Elizabeth Knepper Will to whom he was married 71 years; sons: Daniel J. (Kathleen) Will and John C (Connie) Will; and daughter-in-law Mary R. Will, all of Berlin. Seven Grandchildren and 12 GreatGrandchildren; sister Naomi (Bob) Sheeler, sister-in-law Mildred Will, both of Somerset; and close family friends Richard Fox, Sipesville, and George Tabangcora, Paris, TX. He was a 1941 graduate of Somerset Area High School and was a lifelong dairy farmer. Member of the Somerset Alliance Church where he served in many capacities, Berlin Area Historical Society, PA Holstein Association where he was a past director, Sons of the American Revolution, and was the oldest member of the Berlin Young Farmers. He was a lifetime member of the Somerset Historical Society and was a past director of the Maryland and Virginia Milk Producers Association and was a past director of the National Bank of Western PA. He reached many people by sharing his love of the Lord. A special thank you to all of his caregivers and hospice nurses and staff for their loving care and attention. Funeral was held on March 15th with Rev. Dr. Scott Ream and Rev. Donald Robson officiating. Contribution may be given to In Touch Hospice, P.O. Box 1173, Somerset, PA 15501 or to the Somerset Alliance Church.
