CONWAY — What do the Kennett High Eagles have in common with the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins, the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox? They're all using the ImPACT test computer program to monitor concussions. All of the fall sports teams at Kennett have taken the test now and can begin preseason training. The Eagles are following a lead of state-line neighbor Fryeburg Academy, which started ImPACT testing two years ago.

GREELEY, Colo. (NY Times) — The idea of making school lunches better and healthier has gathered steam in many parts of the nation in recent years, but not equally for every child. Schools with money and involved parents concerned about obesity and nutrition charged ahead, while poor and struggling districts, overwhelmed by hard times, mostly did not.

This midsize city in northern Colorado, where 60 percent of the 19,500 students qualify for free or reduced-price meals, is trying to break the mold. When classes start on Thursday, the district will make a great leap forward — and at the same time back to the way it was done a generation ago — in cooking meals from scratch.

Factory food took over most American schools in a rolling, greasy wave of chicken nuggets and preprepped everything over the last few decades. Now, real ingredients and spices like cumin and garlic — and in a modern twist, fiber-laden carrots snuck in where children do not expect them, like pasta sauce — are making their return to the cafeteria tray.

Getting ready for that counterrevolution here in Greeley involved a weeklong boot camp to relearn forgotten arts like kitchen math — projecting ingredients to scale when making, say, 300 pans of lasagna, which cooks were doing this week — and to brush up on safe cooking temperatures for meat.

HOMS, Syria (NY Times) — The narrower the streets of this city, a caldron of revolt and resistance against four decades of rule by the Assad family, the blunter the graffiti becomes. It is scrawled on walls, garbage bins, phone booths, doors and even tree trunks, as a city that was long quiescent declares these days that it will no longer stay quiet.

Even for those like Ariana Dudley, a senior who watched her home collapse around her and is currently living in a trailer, there was less talk of tragedy than of the new laptops each student would receive, one of the many signs of the outpouring of money and donations since the tornado.

Debt crisis brings focus back to early Euro pact LONDON (NY Times) — Europe has never found it easy to define itself, and now it is having more trouble than ever doing so.

Still no answers two weeks after girl’s body found WEST STEWARTSTOWN — Two weeks after searchers pulled the body of 11-year-old Celina Cass from the Connecticut River near her house, the lack of an arrest or answers to questions about how she died has cast a pall over her New Hampshire hometown.

People in Stewartstown are waiting for answers about the girl, justice for her family and peace of mind for themselves.

The police’s inability to identify or charge a suspect, an autopsy that

couldn’t pinpoint the cause of death and lingering fears that a killer is at large are hanging over the town.

Police say the investigation is active, with the results of toxicology tests on the girl’s body pending. Experts say that may go a long way toward helping identify or charge a suspect.

Cass vanished July 25 or July 26 from her home after being last seen on her computer in her bedroom. Her body was found Aug. 1.

Preservation of Fryeburg covered bridge included among Maine highway projects WASHINGTON – U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood Wednesday announced $4.5 million in grants to fund an array of highway-related projects in Maine, including installing roundabouts to reduce crashes at exit 113 on I-95 near Augusta, replacing the structurally deficient Ricker's Bridge in Turner and reconstructing a road providing access to and from the tribal tribal lands of the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians.

Also on the list is $60,000 for preservation of Hemlock Covered Bridge in Fryeburg.

"Transportation investments like these will create jobs and improve the quality of life for Maine residents as well as strengthen the state's economy," said LaHood. "The demand from the states for these funds shows just how critical the need is for infrastructure investment."

Requests poured in from every state, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. – more than 1,800 applications, totaling nearly $13 billion, which is more than 30 times the funding available.

Congress created the discretionary grant programs to give Federal Highway Administration the latitude to support projects that maintain the nation's roads and bridges, improve roadway safety and make communities more livable. In previous years, Congress designated some of this grant money for specific projects and Federal Highway Administration awarded the remainder through a competitive process.

Because the Fiscal Year 2011 budget passed by Congress last April directed that all such funds be discretionary, Federal Highway Administration awarded these funds through a competitive process.

Hot Dogs By The Curb. The Conway United Methodist Church, located at 121 Main Street, in Conway (across from the Brown Church) will be serving hot dogs chips and a drink, by the curb, for a donation of $5, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Corned Beef Dinner. The gentlemen of the Bradley Memorial United Methodist Church, on McNeil Road in Fryeburg will be cooking up acorned beef dinner, with all the trimmings, cabbage done to perfection, beets, rolls and the ladies’ home baked pie.

There will be two sittings, at 5:30 and 6 p.m. Take-out will be available. All are welcome at the Harbor Church for this dinner.

Food Drive. From 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. the Ossipee Rotary will be collecting non-perishable food items in the parking lot at the Ossipee Hannaford Store, located at the junction of Routes 28 and 16. All items collected will be distributed to the food pantries of Freedom, Madison, Ossipee and Tamworth. The Rotary Club will have a big yellow truck parked out front that they hope to fill with food items. Lists of needed items that can be picked up as you do your shopping will be available at the two tents right outside the store. Karen Elaine Wagner

Karen E. (Legere) Wagner, 67, a resident of Windsock Village in West Ossipee, died peacefully Aug. 7, 2011 at the Hyder Hospice House in Dover. Karen suffered from severe Rheumatoid Arthritis for many years and recently with Lewy Body Dementia.

Karen was born Jan. 12, 1944 in Lynn, Mass. Her parents were Verney Legere (deceased) and Dorothy (Porter) Legere (deceased), both from Lynn, Mass. Karen was married Oct. 23, 1982 to Merle F. Wagner. She had a previous marriage to Georges Saucier (deceased).

Karen was an avid quilter and watercolor artist. She had won numerous awards for her quilting with one quilt winning in the Hoffman Fabric quilt challenge in 2002. This quilt went on a national tour of quilt shows. Her quilts and paintings are currently available for public viewing on Facebook under Merle Wagner. of Augusta, Maine; an adopted son, Peter Saucier, Cockeysville, Md.; a stepson from a previous marriage Patrick Saucier, of Columbia, S.C.; two stepchildren from her current marriage, Dawn Wagner. of Mexico City, Mexico, and Merle Wagner Jr., of Malden, Mass.; six grandchildren; three brothers, Brad Legere, Lenny Legere, of Georgetown, Mass., and David Legere, of Lynn, Mass.

Karen did not wish to have any services but wanted everyone to join in celebrating her life and spirit at a party in her honor. Karen's one major love in life was ice cream and her most favorite spot for this delicacy was Kimball Farm in Westford, Mass. There will be an ice cream buffet party for Karen at Kimball Farm in Westford, Mass. on Sept. 10 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Drivers, is it worth becoming angry?

To the editor: Sit down, and kick your work boots off. Think back to when you were 15 years old, learning how to drive; all the emotions that came into play when you gripped the steering wheel between your hands for the first time. The anxiety, the thrill, the pressure that comes hand-in-hand with the huge responsibility of learning the ways of the road; it’s a challenging experience, and today’s impatient lifestyle of society doesn’t make it any easier.

I am a 16-year-old driver enrolled in driver’s education, and when I first started out I was terrified. The demand that society places on drivers is fast-paced.

The hustle and bustle of driving is hectic to a new driver. In driver’s education we are taught from our first day in class to abide by the laws of the road, and yet, when all the drivers around you push you to go at their speed; expect you to know what they’re doing; and are easily frustrated and angry with your slow progression, it makes the learning experience of driving a stressful situation.

I’ve only been out on the roads for about a month now, and I’ve experienced how drivers can become when you don’t react to their liking; if you take too long at a green light, turn a corner too slowly, double check at an intersection, or drive at a safe and comfortable speed limit for you, you encounter drivers who will honk, ride your bumper, and do countless illegal actions to get past you. As

a new driver, I already feel the pressure of doing my best in order to make my driving enjoyable and safe for the people around me and would like the same from them. When experienced drivers push me to do things I’m unfamiliar with, or to drive in conditions that are above my comfort zone, it only increases the anxiety that I first felt when putting the car into “drive” for the first time. Where has the patience gone? Do you remember when?

The urban sprawl is the creation of our pushy drivers. People more commonly now speed, tailgate, run red lights and do much more to complete the things they need to do. The average American tries to accomplish too much within their day and becomes impatient. Impatience, in some people, leads to aggression which can lead to acts of rage or violence and can create dangerous situations for anyone. If drivers could take the time, drive at the regulated speed limit or just be patient enough to let a driver check their surroundings, then many of the collisions and nonfatal accidents we have today might not occur.

All I ask is if the next time you jump into the car with a busy schedule on your mind, take a minute to ask yourself, “Is it worth becoming angry?” and remember when you were an inexperienced driver, praying you wouldn’t be put into a situation that was above your ability, and be considerate of others.

The Dog Days of August

As I write this the speed of time passing has perceptibly advanced.

It is mid-August and with the retreating southbound sun, it also feels a bit like the great lumbering ship of summer has begun to list to one side; and with the new angle, everything on deck is sliding ever faster toward the edge. The edge, of course, being Labor Day when suddenly everything will start up again and we’ll wonder, as we do every year, where the summer went. And on top of that, the arrival of September, and then the sweet blur of autumn, brings a jumble of too-short days rushing to catch up on all that was set aside during the summer.

In the great scheme of things there has been little to complain about this summer, unless, I suppose, you were unlucky enough to be a roofer or hot-topper during that record hot spell back in July.

Last month was hot and dry and the bugs, save for the nuisance deerflies, seem to have retreated for another year, making time outdoors both plentiful and nice.

It is easier to ignore the outside world in summer, too, and things like wars, the sinking dollar, and the inertia of government, while disturbing, seem far away when you’re on the river or at the lake.

I often wonder if today’s young people will remember these days as we did; times filled with berries and ice cream, wet towels and bare feet, and long evenings after longer days with not a care in the world.

Just the word, summer, is weighty with feeling and likely conjures up clear images in everyone’s mind. We all went to school once, and summer was the annual and welcome reprieve from all of those obligations and pressures associated with learning. Summer, at least until summer jobs took form, occupied a long stretch of time which seemed infinite at first, only to slip rapidly away like hourglass sand in these, the dog days of August. Even with those jobs as I had washing dishes in a steamy kitchen the summer I turned 13, there was always the moment the work was done and we all popped, like sweaty champagne corks, out into the glow of the warm summer

night. I lived near the ocean that summer, and there was something ethereal about starlit summer skies and salt air and seagulls crying, that stays with me still. It all intensified as August dawned and the end was now in sight; and with it came an urgency to make the most of the fleeting time that was left.

Then, as now, we look wistfully and with alarm at the vast array of things we still want to do, and we set about filling the remaining days. Secret swimming holes, clear mountain peaks, summer theater, kayaks on the lake, and evenings with friends all crowd the list, even as the sun sets earlier and the grim back-to-school ads begin to appear. It is true that we can still drive the convertible late into October, but by Labor Day the ice cream stand will have served its last cone for another year. It is not a surprise, this familiar pattern of summers now, and gone, for unless we are set apart from the world somehow, the routines conspire to remain the same. In a few weeks the school busses will again infiltrate our morning commutes and it all will seem like a dream.

August is followed by September and its cooler nights, changing leaves, the last local corn, and the warmth of a sweater pulled from the chest for after the sun goes down. It has always been so. But for now there are still enough days remaining to imagine June’s wish list complete. How this magical summer will be remembered is still up to you.

brings to a close the longest budget season on record for members of the Conway School Board who actually started working on it in April of 2010, but the budget has traveled down many roads since then and encountered more than its share of speed bumps before arriving at what should be the final vote Tuesday.

"I was glad to see the support," Carl Nelson, school superintendent, said by phone Wednesday. "This budget was a collaborative effort between the school board and the budget committee. I really think it's going to set the tone for a more successful upcoming budget season."

The Municipal Budget Committee unanimously supported the budget 16-0 while the Conway School Board also endorsed the figure 5-1.

With a known budget figure in place, Nelson and other school officials are now able to proceed with the task of preparing for the upcoming school year and hiring the necessary staffing. The positive result paves the way for the filling of 12 positions, which had previously been been put on hold due to reduction-in-force pink slips in April because of the budget uncertainty.

"I have an interview this afternoon," Nelson said. "We did two interviews (Tuesday) and have two more planned for (Thursday). We're moving forward and checking the references of the candidates. Even though we're in a bit of time crunch we can't rush the process, it's far too important.

"I'm hoping that we will be pretty well staffed by this Monday's school board meeting (6:30 p.m. in the Professional Development Center at the Kennett Middle School)," he added.

"Even if I have to carry a name or two over (to the September board meeting for approval), which I don't like to do, I think we'll be in pretty good shape."

There was just one question on Tuesday's ballot — the budget — and voters were asked to support the $32,798,634 figure with a yes vote. A no vote would have put the default budget of $33,115,119, which was the same as last year, in place. Voters opted for the lesser figure.

The default budget, Nelson has explained, starts with the previous year's gross budget. "Then you deduct any one-time expenses (special education, insurance reductions and special warrant articles). You then add back in your contractual obligations like fuel, maintenance, the librarians and reading specialists (items required by the state)."

Acting school clerk Mike King said it was "a very slow day" at the polls as on average just 33 people per hour voted over the 11 hours the booths were open at the Conway Community Building in Center Conway.

Officials had thought it might be a slow day.

"A general predictor we use is the number of absentee ballots," Rhoda Quint, town clerk, said Thursday.

"They tend to dictate whether there's a lot of interest or not, and where there's only one question on the ballot, we've received just nine absentee ballots."

The ballots were counted by hand rather than using the electronic voting machines. King said the count was done in a matter of minutes.

Voters in April rejected the school board's then proposed $33 million budget, opting instead for a default budget that was $190,000 more ($33,275,846).

The school budget failed, 1,082 to 723 (remarkably the 359-vote difference was just one less voter than cast a ballot Tuesday).

mended an 11 percent cut, but voters at deliberative session in March to put it all back in.

There was a movement prior to the April vote to get citizens to support the default budget in hopes that it would avoid a legal battle. Voters went that route, but the N.H. Attorney General and N.H. Department of Revenue Administration determined May 11 that the budget approved by voters was subject to the so-called 10 percent rule, which limits to 10 percent the amount voters can add or deduct from the budget.

The letter from the DRA stated: "We are disallowing an appropriation amount of $449,950 from warrant articles 14-9 and an additional $1,019,746 from warrant article 5."

In the letter, DRA offered a special meeting as possible solution. "In accordance with RSA 40:13, X and XVI the school district may hold one special meeting to take up the issue of

a revised operating budget only."

The school board elected to go the special meeting direction rather than head for a possible drawn-out legal battle and came up with a new budget.

Over 1,000 people attended the March deliberative meeting. In mid July, at the most recent school deliberative meeting, it took longer to make sure the microphones were working than for the 130 citizens who turned out to Loynd Auditorium to move the proposed 2011-12 school budget forward to a vote.

The $32,798,634 budget recommended by the municipal budget committee and Conway School Board drew not a single question from the audience as the deliberative portion of school meeting wrapped up in just six minutes.

The school board will have little time if any to enjoy Tuesday's vote as the 2012-13 budget process has already begun and is expected to pick up even more momentum next month now that this budget has been finalized.

said Mark Boland, of the Institute for Rural Health and Wellness. "It provides objective data which improves our medical team’s decision-making ability regarding return to play while enhancing safety for our student/athletes."

ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is the first, most-widely used, and most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system," according to its website www.impacttest.com "ImPACT provides computerized neurocognitive assessment tools and services that are used by medical doctors, psychologists, athletic trainers and other licensed health-care professionals to assist them in determining an athlete's ability to return to play after suffering a concussion."

The Conway School District is among 23 high school/club teams in the Granite State currently using the ImPACT software. It's also being used by the University of New Hampshire, Dartmouth College and Plymouth State University along with 23 National Football League teams including the New England Patriots; every National Hockey League and Major League Baseball team; and eight current National Basketball Association teams (the Boston Celtics are not among those).

"There are only a handful of schools in Division II (which Kennett participates in)," said Kerry Brady, athletic director at Kennett High, "and there aren't that many schools this far north doing it. I think it's a pretty important thing, it's something we should do to protect the athletes. We're also going to be doing the testing at the middle school this fall."

Kennett's new policy states: "Kennett High/Middle School is introducing impact testing for all athletes for the 2011-12 school year. Each student needs to complete a computer base test before starting a sport at Kennett." Last week, members of the Kennett High football team took the test, and Monday the boys' and girls' soccer teams, boys and girls' cross-country running teams and the golf and volleyball teams all took the 20-25 minute long computerized test.

"It's the first time we're doing," Mike

Holderman, head football coach, said.

"I think it's going to become mandatory sooner or later. I'm glad we're ahead of the curve.

"We had a couple of players with concussions last year," he added. "We all want to avoid that first concussion, but at least now we have a baseline for each athlete. You don't want to rush an athlete back because the second (concussion) can happen quickly. Now, you're going to have to meet the baseline and then can return three, four or five days later."

For example, football players take a baseline test before the season to record normal health. If they suffer a concussion, before they're allowed back on the field, they retake the same test. If the results are different from the baseline test, it could mean the concussion has not healed.

"After buying an ice machine, ImPACT should be the next thing you buy for an athletic training room," Marc Wysocki, of the Berkshire School in Massachusetts, said. "It is by far the best piece of equipment to help to ensure the athletes are kept safe and return to play."

Developed in the early 1990s by Drs. Mark Lovell and Joseph Maroon, ImPACT is a 20-minute test that has become a standard tool used in comprehensive clinical management of concussions for athletes of all ages.

"Given the inherent difficulties in concussion management, it is important to manage concussions on an individualized basis and to implement baseline testing and/or post-injury neurocognitive testing," www.impacttest.com states. "This type of concussion assessment can help to objectively evaluate the concussed athlete's postinjury condition and track recovery for safe return to play, thus preventing the cumulative effects of concussion.

In fact, neurocognitive testing has recently been called the "cornerstone" of proper concussion management by an international panel of sports medicine experts."

The ImPACT tearing is being administered by certified athletic trainer Andy Trowbridge, of Mountain Center Physical Therapy.

phone. "Obviously, we never want to see anyone get injured, a concussion can be dangerous, it's a head injury.

It's really nice to see us on the forward curve with this testing. Nationwide there are 1,500 schools who use this, and for us to be in that growing number is great. By doing this at the middle school, too, we really are ahead of the curve there. We'll be one of the few middle schools in New Hampshire testing all of its athletes."

online for individuals or groups; and is compatible with PC and MAC. "The test is designed to be mildly provocative," Trowbridge said. "If you are concussed, your faculties are a little slow, things will pop up (on the ImPACT test) if there are still issues."

Trowbridge explained he will continue to treat athletes as he has in the past when possible concussions occur.

"My initial feeling will still be a

catalyst for treatment," he said. "Once they see their physician and their symptoms decrease then we will look at retesting the individual. If the test is successful (matching the prior baseline) then we can look at a return to the playing process.

"Once an individual has an unsatisfactory test, they can't immediately retake it," Trowbridge added. "They have to wait another week before

retaking it. The big thing about ImPACT is it should help prevent multiple concussions. We're finding more and more there isn't necessarily an increase in concussions but our recognition of them is vastly better than a few years ago."

The program measures multiple aspects of cognitive functioning in athletes, including: attention span; working memory; sustained and selective attention time; response variability; non-verbal problem solving; and reaction time."

"Although each athlete can be tested only once in high school, we recommend testing two times â&#x20AC;&#x201D; freshman and junior years (in high school the brain is still developing)," the website states. "In college, the athlete should be tested during his or her freshman year. At the professional level, each athlete should be tested once."

"After this year," Trowbridge said, "it will be just incoming freshmen and juniors who will take the test.

Osgood-Schlatter’s Disease One of the most common complaints primary care physicians encounter in their adolescent population is knee pain. There are many conditions that cause knee pain, from torn cartridge to fractures, from infections to medical diseases.

Sometimes patients develop knee pain for reasons other than those stated above. One of the most prevalent sources of knee pain that is not a result of the aforementioned is known as Osgood-Schlatter’s Disease.

The name is horrific; no one wants a “disease” that’s named after someone. The term harks Dr. Brian Irwin of severity. And while the nomenclature is far more severe than this condition, it’s intimidating all the same. Rest assured, Osgood-Schlatter’s is not a progressive, terminal condition. But it does hurt. In fact, it’s so uncomfortable that 21 percent of all teenage athletes present at some point to their PCP or a health provider with the condition.

The lower leg is comprised of many structures, the largest being the tibia and fibula. On the front aspect of the tibia, below the kneecap, is a small bony protrusion known as an apophysis. The kneecap floats above this, tethered by a broad tendon. That tendon stabilizes the patella and attaches to the tibial apophysis. This link is where the pain occurs in Osgood-Schlatter.

The exact cause is unknown, but in patients who aquire Osgood-Schlatter the tendons that attach at the apophysis pull off the bone, detaching to some degree from the tibia. Most patients who have Osgood-Schlatter have some history of trauma to the knee, either direct or indirect.

Any adolescent can develop Osgood-Schlatter, but it is most common in athletes, with roughly three times the number of boys affected as girls.

The symptoms usually present before the apophysis has completed its fusion to the tibial bone, which occurs around age 11 in girls, a year or two later in boys.

The symptoms of Osgood-Schlatter are often limited to pain in the front of the knee, just below the kneecap. The pain is exacerbated by traumatic activities, like jumping, running and kneeling. Symptoms on both sides are not uncommon.

Pain can be present for up to a year or two after treatment starts, but in almost all cases it resolves completely.

The mainstay of treatment for Osgood-Schlatter is rest. Ice and anti-inflamatories can be very helpful, but if the traumatic cause of the condition is not avoided, recovery is delayed. In some cases a complete hiatus from exercise for a week or two can lead to full recovery in as little as a month, although realistically healing usually takes more time.

Bear in mind there are a number of other causes of knee pain in the adolescent population.

Stress fractures, bone cysts and a broad array of other possibilities exist, so if you (or your child) has knee pain it’s wise to seek the attention of a medical provider.

It’s part of life. With all the talk in the news lately about unsafe foods, it’s time to take a look at some of the facts surrounding food-borne illness and get the scoop on prevention.

According the Center for Disease Control and Prevention about 76 million people in the United States get sick from something they ate every year. It’s not just a matter of meats. Vegetables, fruits and dairy products are also culprits. Food borne illnesses are caused by eating (or drinking) foods with bacteria, parasite or viruses. The foods can become infected anywhere from the farm to your home. The good news is there are things you can do to decrease the likelihood of contracting a food borne illness.

North Country Veterans Conference coming to Berlin

BERLIN — The North Country Veterans Conference is coming to Berlin on Friday, Sept. 30 at the Berlin Armory. The theme of this year’s conference is Celebrating Generations, and is open to all veterans, service members and their families, as well as agencies and organizations who serve — or want to serve — the North Country Veteran Community.

This event will include a keynote presentation from Major General William Reddel III, adjutant general for the N.H. National Guard. Over 800 National Guard members will be returning this fall from the largest deployment in the history of the N.H. National Guard. This conference will help educate individuals on the roles and responsibilities of the National Guard, as well as what the N.H. National Guard looks like in our state.

Robert Walton, Director of the White River Junction (WRJ) VA Medical Center will also be presenting, and will be joined by many members of his staff. This White River Junction VA team will be available throughout the day to answer any questions on enrollment, mental health services, homelessness and other services for veterans from all eras. Pastor David Canter, a combat Vietnam Veteran will speak about “Surviving the Experience”, and will be joined by his wife Linda.

personal experiences, as well as how they secured help and services. Over 20 military and civilian agencies will provide table displays on resources for veterans and their families.

During the registration period and lunch, attendees will have an opportunity to tour the Mobile Vet Center which will be located in the parking lot of the Berlin Armory. This 39-foot motor coach, with space for confidential counseling, carries Vet Center counselors and outreach workers to provide non-medical readjustment counseling, addressing the social and economic dimensions of post-war needs.

Kids Count again recognizes NH as best place to raise a child

CONCORD – For the fourth year in a row, the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s Kids Count survey has named New Hampshire the best state to raise a child.

“I am proud that New Hampshire has once again been recognized as the best state in the nation to raise a child.” Gov. Lynch said.

“This ranking matters because it means more New Hampshire children are healthy and receiving the good start they need to succeed than anywhere else in the nation,” Gov. LynchA said. "It also matters because it helps attract new residents and new businesses to invest here in New Hampshire – which will our families succeed well into the future.”

BRIDGTON, Maine — The 21st Annual Bridgton Hospital Benefit Golf Tournament will be held Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the Bridgton Highland Country Club. State encourages updating vaccinations in August

CONCORD — The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services Division of Public Health Services has recognized National Immunization Awareness Month in August, sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to highlight the importance of everyone getting vaccinated, especially for the start of the school year. Vaccination is the single best way to prevent certain communicable diseases.

“We all need vaccines to keep us safe and there are different ones recommended for different stages of life,” said Dr. Jos&eacute; Montero, Director of Public Health at DPHS. “They are not just for children any more, but it is important that children have all the immunizations they are supposed to have and the beginning of the school year is a good time to make sure you and your family are up to date.”

Vaccines help prevent certain diseases such as measles, polio, diphtheria, and shingles. Many ill-

nesses are being seen again after an absence of decades, such as pertussis (whooping cough) which is especially dangerous to very young children, because vaccination rates in some areas are declining. There are certain vaccines adults should get as well, such as a tetanus booster every 10 years and a flu vaccine every fall. Seniors are advised to get certain vaccines and boosters such as the herpes zoster vaccine for shingles and the pneumococcal vaccine.

Vaccines for children in New Hampshire up to age 19 are provided free through a partnership among insurance companies, the federal government, and the state.

Jane Patterson Burcaw Ross Jane Patterson Burcaw Ross, 66, passed away at home on Aug. 14, 2011 with her family at her side after a long battle with cancer.

She was born March 3, 1945 in Portsmouth, Va. to the late Lois (Weiler) and Robert Burcaw of Bartlett. Raised in Palisades, N.Y., she attended local schools, graduating from Nyack high school in 1962. After graduation, Jane received a Certification in Equestrian Arts from the Silvermine School of Horsemastership in New Canaan, Conn. She then attended Cortlandt College, majoring in the study of victorian literature. In 1971, she moved her family to Eaton Center, where she and husband Larry Ross raised their family on an organic farm for 20 years.

Jane was an avid reader — her love of books was legendary, along with an impressive knowledge of British history.

She enjoyed gardening and pursued a strong interest in the study of metaphysical work, which she used to offer readings for people from all over the United States. This endeavor she found especially rewarding. A former member of the Mount Washington Valley Choral Society, she most remembered a performance of the Beethoven Mass in C Major, under the direction of guest conductor Gerard Schwarz. In addition, she worked as the business manager for the Gibson Center for Senior Services for

Noble J. Davis Jr.

Noble J. Davis Jr., of Center Conway, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011 at the Fryeburg Health Care Center in Fryeburg, Maine. Born in Corsicana, Texas, the son of Noble and Ruth (Phillips) Davis, Sr., he had lived in the Mount Washington Valley for nearly 20 years.

He graduated from high school in Oklahoma City, Okla. and attended Oklahoma University for two years before being commissioned in 1952 as a Naval Aircraft Carrier Pilot. Noble graduated in 1965 from the Naval Postgraduate School Monterey, Calif. with a bachelor's degree in international relations and political science.

Noble was flight deck officer and carrier pilot on the USS Aircraft Carriers Coral Sea and WASP, as well as being a Vet-

eran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. His last duty assignment was Chief Data Operations Officer for the Joint Chiefs of Staff at The Pentagon, Washington, D.C. He served 29 years in the United States Navy retiring in 1971 at

the rank of Commander.

After retiring from the United States Navy, Noble was a Program Manager at the Naval Under Water System Center, Newport, R.I. until his retirement. After retiring Noble worked for a Veteran’s Organization in Providence, R.I. before he and his family moved permanently to New Hampshire.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years Thelma (Calcagni) Davis and their daughter Lori A. Davis of Center Conway. He was the brother of the late United States Navy Lieutenant Bill N. Davis, of San Diego, Calif., and Bobby J. Davis Sr., a Marine Veteran of Lavaca, Ark. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. The Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway is in charge of arrangements.

DEAR ABBY: I’m in a real pickle. My ex-wife, “Gloria,” and I have been divorced eight years, but have managed to remain civil to each other.

Last year, my daughter had a big birthday party to which I wanted to bring a date. Gloria decided that she would not attend because it would be “hurtful” to see me with another woman. After my daughter called me in tears, I canceled my date and went to the party alone.

Now my daughter is about to be married and I want to bring a date to the ceremony. Again, Gloria has announced that she will forgo the pleasure of seeing our daughter get married “so I can have my way and prove to the world I’m able to get a date.” My daughter is caught in the middle and wants us both there.

I foresee a host of problems in the future if Gloria’s behavior continues. My girlfriend is understanding, but I wish I could include her in family activities, especially one-of-a kind events like weddings. Your thoughts, Abby? -- ARIZONA DAD IN CONFLICT DEAR ARIZONA DAD: Clearly you have gotten on with your life and Gloria hasn’t. Eight years is a long time, and by now your ex should have adjusted to the fact that you have separate lives. One solution would be for Gloria to bring a companion of her own to the wedding. Another would be for you to sit with your ex during the ceremony and with your girlfriend at the reception. DEAR ABBY: I like to be tan. Sometimes I tan outside, but often that takes too long and can be damaging to the skin, so I opt for self-tanning lotion. But some people ask me if I have put on “fake-n-bake”! I feel this is rude.

I don’t want to have to explain my desire for tan legs. I want people to believe the color is real. They do look that way, but because others are pale in comparison, I get asked about it. Your problem may be that you are using the wrong product. Or, if you’re using it only on your legs, that could be what’s made it obvious to others.
