DP World MICT becomes CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE 1st Container Terminal in Gujarat sets a New World Record to handle 10mn Containers of Full Containers Onboard MUMBAI: Global Logistics Company DP World operated Mundra International Container Terminal (MICT) has set yet another record for being the first container terminal in Gujarat to successfully handle more than 13 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), and 10 mn Containers, since its inception. This milestone comes with the terminal achieving its all-time highest monthly throughput of 123,611 TEUs by handling 70 vessels in March 2021. Cont’d. Pg. 6

SINGAPORE: The CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE, the world’s largest LNG-powered containership has set a new world record of the highest number of full containers aboard a single vessel. When she departed the port of Singapore on 8 April, the 23,000-TEU vessel of the CMA CGM Group was carrying 21,433 full containers (twenty-foot equivalent units) onboard. Currently en-route to Europe on the FAL 1 service, CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE is laden with containers of household goods, electronic items, machineries and personal protection equipment. Cont’d. Suez Canal may expand Southern channel : Chairman CAIRO: The Suez Canal Authority is considering expanding the southern section of the water way where the container ship Ever Given became stranded, its chairman said recently. It is also looking into procuring cranes that could potentially offload cargo at heights of up to 52 meters, Osama Rabie told Reuters in an interview. “Our procedures are sound, we are just aiming to improve the service,” he said. The 400-metre-long (1,310 ft)

Ever Given became grounded diagonally across the southern section of the canal during high winds on March 23. It remained stuck for six days, preventing hundreds of ships from passing and significantly impacting global trade flows. After it was dislodged, the ship was taken to a lake that separates two sections of the canal where the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has been conducting investigations. Rabie said data from the ship’s recorders had been removed and handed

over to an investigation committee, and that the ship would travel on once the procedures were completed. “We are talking about two or three more days, God willing. But we won’t take much time,” he said. The SCA has said that it will continue to take ships of the Ever Given’s size and is reinforcing its ability to deal with future problems. “We will try to get two more tug boats, with pulling power of more than 200 tonnes – 250, 280, depending,” Rabie said.

DP WORLD MICT becomes 1st Container Terminal in Gujarat to handle 10mn Containers Cont’d. from Pg. 1 MICT has registered a remarkable 60% Year-on-Year growth on Origin Destination (OD) volumes over March 2020, surpassing overall India’s OD growth of 29.8% for the same period. MICT is the first terminal at Mundra, the largest Port on western coast of India. From handling twenty thousand TEUs in its first year of operations in 2003, the terminal has emerged as the gateway for the North and the North West regions of the country while pioneering the container revolution in the Kutch Region. MICT has achieved this breakthrough by handling more than 10,000 container vessels while serving international trade routes and contributing to the growth of India’s container trade and economic development. MICT continues to excel in areas of operations efficiency and deploying best-in-class infrastructure and technology, thereby, putting MICT in the top quartile of the best performing container terminals globally. Concor calls EoI from prospective local Container Manufacturers NEW DELHI: The Container Corporation of India Ltd (Concor) has called expression of interest recently from prospective local container manufacturers ahead of launching a competitive bidding process to buy 6,000 containers as India looks to cut dependence on China for procuring the equipment amidst an acute shortage of containers facing exporters. Concor said it plans to buy 6,000, 20 feet high cube end open containers, through an open tender in which six vendors will be given a minimum order of 1000 containers. The purpose of the EoI is to prepare the prospective indigenous container manufacturers for the forthcoming competitive bidding process and also to take their suggestions to achieve the objective of developing local container manufacturing industry in line with the

Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives of the government, according to the EoI document. Shipping lines and exporters’ groups have urged the government to facilitate the manufacturing of marine containers within the country to secure supply chain for exports in view of the container shortage. China makes about 95 per cent of the global shipping containers. CIMC is the largest container manufacturer with a market share of 40 per cent. Other players include Singamas, COSCO and CXIC. India’s external trade grew to $838.46 billion in FY20 and the increasing trade is translating into higher demand for containerisation due to their efficiencies. India will require approximately 60,000 new containers between 2021 and 2026, an annual addition of about 10,000 containers per year, according to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.

CWC should double its storage capacity by 2023; turnover of Rs.1000 crore : Commerce Minister NEW DELHI: Union Minister of Fo o d & P u b l i c D i s t r i b u t i o n a n d Consumer Affairs, Railways and Commerce & Industry Shri Piyush Goyal recently reviewed the modernization plan of Central Warehouse Corporation. While reviewing, the Minister Shri Goyal said that CWC should double its warehouse storage capacity by end of year 2023 and achieve a turnover of Rs 10000 crore b y t h e F i n a n c i a l Ye a r 2 0 2 4 - 2 5 . At present, CWC warehouse storage capacity is 125 LMT. In review meeting, Shri Goyal said that the tariff rationalization and setting of warehouses should be done independently by CWC without any

bureaucratic interference. He said that maximum powers of decision making for operations should be delegated to the CWC. He also asked CWC to focus on building of cold chain storage in the country on priority basis. Shri Goyal instructed CWC to do Safety Audit for fire, earthquakes burglary and accidents in its all warehouses regularly. Further Shri Goyal said, CWC should build modern silos for wheat and rice storage all over the country, so that maximum grains could be stored in the country for longer periods. Shri Goyal said CWC should build more cold chain facilities for storage O n i o n , P o t a t o a n d To m a t o i n coordination with NAFED.

The Minister suggested that CWC should prepare a masterplan for upgradation of its all 423 warehouses. CWC should do the warehouse / storage gap analysis for agricultural produce and accordingly prepare plans with the help of Architects and experts. The Minister further said that CWC should work in mission mode for taking care of all stakeholders i.e. staff, clients, workers, truck drivers. He said all CWC warehouses must have modern and convenience facilities, like toilets for Male, Female workers, customers, drivers and divyangs, proper waiting rooms/restroom, worker-shed, drinking water facilities and other basic amenities with neat & clean ambience.

PNB meets Exporters, launches Online Trade Finance Portal NEW DELHI: The Punjab National Bank has organized an Exporters Meet recently at ITC Maurya, New Delhi. The meeting was presided over by CH. S. S. Mallikarjuna Rao – MD and CEO of Punjab National Bank, in the presence of Swar up Kumar Saha – Executive Director of the Bank. Vibha Aren, General Manager of International Banking Division, Corporate General Managers and other senior officials from the Bank’s Delhi zone were also present. CH. S. S. Mallikarjuna Rao deliberated upon the successful amalgamation of the erstwhile Oriental Bank of Commerce and erstwhile United Bank of India with Punjab National Bank. He further discussed the organizational structure changes, focusing on the verticalization of

important segments, such as risk management, credit underwriting, and forex operations to improve services. More than 65 leading exporters from the Delhi NCR region attended the event. During the meet, PNB announced new initiatives for the exporters, such as launching an online portal named “Trade Finance Redefined” and “Video Conference with Executives”. The portal has a unique feature of 24/7 availability for submission of export documents directly to the trade finance centre, thus speeding up processes and improving turnaround time. The Bank has also increased its forex trade processing centres to four metros – Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, from earlier two centres. Competitive pricing and centralization

of the forex activities would provide ease of doing business for the Indian exporters. The event was followed by a vibrant interactive session wherein the exporter clients appreciated the way amalgamation had been handled and uninterrupted services extended by the Bank amid Covid -19 pandemic. Various other suggestions regarding channel financing, tracking of export proposals, convertibility of fund-based and nonfund-based limits to the exporters were also discussed. K. Meenakshisundaram – General Manager of Bank’s Delhi Zone, has extended a vote for thanks to all participants and expressed gratitude for their contribution and continued relationship with the Bank.

Union Cabinet approves PLI Scheme for White Goods (Air Conditioners and LED Lights) to boost Manufacturing & Exports N E W D E L H I : Ta k i n g a n o t h e r important step towards the vision of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat', the Union Cabinet, c h a i r e d b y t h e P r i m e M i n i s t e r, Shri Narendra Modi, approved the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for White Goods (Air Conditioners and LED Lights) with a budgetary outlay of Rs. 6,238 crore. The prime objective of the PLI scheme is to make manufacturing in India globally competitive by removing sectoral disabilities, creating economies of scale and ensuring efficiencies. It is designed to create complete component ecosystem in India and make India an integral part of the global supply chains. The scheme is expected to attract global investments, generate large scale employment opportunities and enhance exports substantially. The PLI Scheme for White Goods shall extend an incentive of 4% to 6% on incremental sales of goods manufactured in India for a period of five years to companies engaged in manufacturing of Air Conditioners and LED Lights. Different segments have been earmarked

for different t y p e s o f c o m p o n e n t s separately to specifically target global investments into desired areas. Selection of companies for the Scheme shall be done so as to incentivize manufacturing of components or sub-assemblies which are not manufactured in India presently with sufficient capacity. Mere assembly of finished goods shall not be incentivized. Companies meeting the prequalification criteria for different target segments will be eligible to participate in the Scheme. Incentives shall be open to companies making brown field or green field Investments. Thresholds of cumulative incremental investment and incremental sales of manufactured goods over the base year would have to be met for claiming incentives. An entity availing benefits under any other PLI Scheme of Govt. India will not be eligible under this scheme for the same products but the entity may take benefits under other applicable schemes of Govt. of India or schemes of State governments. The Scheme will be implemented as a pan India scheme and is not specific to any

location, area or segment of population. A number of global and domestic companies, including a number of MSMEs are likely to benefit from the Scheme. The Scheme is expected to be instrumental in achieving growth rates that are much higher than existing ones for AC and LED industries, develop complete component eco-systems in India and create global champions manufacturing in India. They will have to meet the compulsory BIS and BEE Quality standards for sales into domestic market and applicable standards for global markets. It will also lead to investments in innovation and research and development and upgradation of technology. It is estimated that over the period of five years, the PLI Scheme will lead to incremental investment of Rs. 7,920 Crore, incremental Production worth Rs. 1,68,000 Crore, exports worth Rs 64,400 Crore, earn direct and indirect revenues of Rs 49,300 crore and create additional four lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities.

Water Taxis and ROPAX Ferries will be part of Mumbai’s transportation soon Water taxi on 12 routes and ROPAX services on 4 new routes will start soon NEW DELHI: Shri Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State (I/C) for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, chaired a meeting to review the Urban Water Transportation projects for Mumbai, Maharashtra. Senior Officials of the Ministry, Chairperson of Mumbai Port and officials of Maharashtra Maritime Board and other stakeholders were present in the meeting. To promote eco-friendly waterways transportation and reduce the traffic load of crowded Mumbai city roads, 4 new routes for ROPAXferry services and 12 new routes of Water Taxi are planned to be operational by December, 2021. Currently, ROPAX ((roll-on/roll-off passenger) service from Bhaucha Dhakka(Ferry Wharf) to Mandwa (Alibag) is successfully operating by reducing the road journey of 110 kmto about 18 km by using waterways, thereby reducing travel time of daily commuters from about 3-4 hours to merely one hour. After the huge benefits being reaped of this ferry service, similar services are planned to be operational at various other routes in Mumbai. The details of the new routes are as follows:

March marks turnaround for Container sector with record high 45 ULCS ship orders : BIMCO OSLO: In March, orders for 45 Ultra-large containerships (ULCS, 15,000+ TEU) were placed, breaking a record on its own. Adding to this; 27 orders for ‘smaller’ sized ships were placed in the same month, bringing the total order capacity to 866,060 TEU and marking a real turnaround for the container shipping sector. The turnaround for the container shipping sector offers a glimpse of the level of confidence currently seen in the business on behalf of owners as well as investors. In all of 2020, a total 995,000 TEU of container shipping capacity was ordered. Capacity ordered in the first quarter of 2021 has already reached 1,398,000 TEU, a six-year-high compared to previous full years. “The industry is keen on benefitting from the economies of scale that ultra-large containerships have to offer if you carry payloads close to its cargo carrying capacity,” says Peter Sand, BIMCO’s Chief Shipping Analyst. It is ‘Upside Down’ for orders placed in 2021 In October and December last year, orders placed were almost exclusively for ships with a maximum capacity of 23,000-24,000 TEU, with only four out 23 orders for ULCS outside that range. So far in 2021, only 4 out of 81 orders for ships with a

capacity of at least 11,800 TEU were larger than 15,500 TEU. “The mammoth size of some containerships was questioned many times during the recent six days of Suez Canal blockage, as some saw it as an omen of ships becoming too large, compromising supply chain reliability, navigational excellence and safety,” Sand says. “But as I said at the time; you should not expect much change on that account, as Ultra-Large containerships are the preferred choice of ‘weapon’ in the arms race of the container shipping industry seeking to improve long-term profitability.”

This makes her the largest container vessel to conduct ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operations in Asia. The CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE and the current deployed fleet of LNG-powered vessels demonstrate the CMA CGM Group’s commitment to energy transition in the shipping industry. Today, LNG is the most advanced solution when it comes to preserving air quality. This technology is one of the first steps towards achieving CMA CGM Group’s ambitious 2050 objective of carbon neutrality. The Group’s fleet of LNG containerships will grow to 32 by the end of 2022.

DCSA Track & Trace Standards Adopted by Majority of Member Carriers Alignment of container shipping industry gains trac on AMSTERDAM: Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA), a neutral, non-profit group established to further digitalisation of container shipping technology standards, today announced that a majority of its member carriers have adopted DCSA Track & Trace (T&T) standards and are currently or will soon be providing customers with access to the standards-based API. The DCSA T&T API provides a streamlined way for shippers to receive real-time, cross-carrier data regarding the whereabouts of their containers. Widespread adoption of DCSA standards will advance the industry in terms of visibility and real-time responsiveness, resulting in greater reliability and a better customer experience. The DCSA T&T standard comprises an information model and interface standards that can be freely downloaded from the DCSA website; API definitions are available on SwaggerHub. The data model ensures track and trace data definitions are consistent for all users, leveraging any system. These definitions are based on the Industry Blueprint, published by DCSA and its carrier members in 2019, which established a consistent vocabulary and proposed a common set of industry processes. The T&T standards are aligned with the UN/CEFACT (United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business) standards to provide a global industry framework that preserves existing investments and streamlines communication among all supply chain participants.
