Allcargo Logistics is shipping 500 oxygen concentrators immediately MUMBAI: Allcargo Logistics, a global player, the #1 LCL consolidator in the world is happy to announce that is shipping 500 oxygen concentrators immediately. Maharashtra Health Minister Shri. Rajesh Tope reached out to Shashi Kiran Shetty of Allcargo for emergency shipping of medical supplies being imported from Singapore through the Temasek Foundation. Allcargo has offered to immediately ship 500 oxygen concentrators from Singapore by air. Mr. Shetty has reached out to Allcargo’s various partner companies, including shipping lines, to transport other medical equipment to support the state government’s efforts. Allcargo will be transporting the oxygen concentrators without any charge and will be shipping 500 oxygen concentrators immediately.

Piyush Goyal calls upon Exporters to reach $400 bn Merchandise Exports this Fiscal NEW DELHI: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal called upon the exporters' community to strive to attain ambitious growth of more than 25 per cent to reach $400 billion merchandise exports in the current year. While interacting with various Export Promotion Councils (EPCs),

Goyal said that several sectors have large export potential, which needs to be identified and harnessed. He called upon the "Exporters to strive to attain ambitious growth of more than 25 per cent to reach $400 billion merchandise exports during the current year". In 2020-21, the country's exports

declined by 7 per cent to about $290 billion despite disruptions, uncertainty, lockdowns, supply chain difficulties, labour issues, and order cancellations in the Covid year. "In the first two weeks of this month also, the performance has been very good," he added while assuring all support to Exporters.

Container shortages and congestion now an ‘industry-wide challenge’ across Asia : Experts SINGAPORE: Equipment shortages in Asia will get worse over the next two weeks, say carriers, impacting both deepsea and intra-Asia trades. Maersk has told customers the strong cargo demand out of Asia Pacific would likely continue throughout the second-quarter, but… “Schedule reliability is impacted by two main factors: recent delays from Europe via Suez Canal; and lower port productivity, especially on transpacific and European trade routes,” the company added. As a result, the shortage of empty containers remains an “industry-wide challenge” across Asia, said Maersk, with this week and next seeing the “largest impact” because “empty containers coming back to Asia are delayed and import retur ns are lower”. This will affect ports in China and also Busan, Korea, according to the shipping line. For example, while its stock of 20ft containers is ‘adequate’, its 40ft high-cube numbers won’t cover demand forecasts. “Shanghai and Ningbo are majorly impacted as they provide the main bulk of supply to Europe,” explained Maersk. “Furthermore, with all these delays,

coastal re-positioning might be impacted. “From 3 May, the situation will be improving, and we expect empty container supply to normalise for the week of 10 May.” The region’s equipment shortages and port congestion are flowing into intra-Asia trades, too. Last week, data from Project44 showed some 370,000 teu en route to Singapore, where, according to Maersk, there is a 1.5 day wait for vessels to berth. Charlie Chu, executive vice president at Thai intra-Asia specialist Regional Container Lines (RCL), said port congestion was getting “much more serious” following the Ever Given incident, and “we estimate this may impact the whole supply chain for a couple more weeks at least”, he told. “The main congestion is at Singapore and Port Klang. On top of this, some Chinese ports like Shanghai, Ningbo, Qingdao and Shekou are suffering with bad weather and ship bunching, which is also making the congestion more serious.” Furthermore, he said, the slow turnaround of vessels and boxes from the US and Europe was also impacting the intra-Asia container supply.

“And some mainline operators have switched their ships from intra-Asia to the deepsea trades, which has squeezed out the capacity supply for the regional market,” Mr Chu added. This has helped push freight rates back up to levels seen prior to Chinese New Year, he said, noting the market had been “soft” following the holiday. Nevertheless, carriers continue to add new intra-Asia capacity. This month, RCL, with partner ONE, launched a loop between Pusan, Qingtao and Shanghai to Laem Chabang. And last week, MSC updated four intra-Asia services to offer “competitive transit times between China and South-east Asia, particularly from China to Vietnam and Thailand, and new direct connections between China and Malaysia”. Grace Chia, commercial general manager of MSC’s regional office in Asia, said more companies were seeking to diversify supply chain risk, which was driving further growth for intra-Asia lanes. “We are seeing an increased flow of components, raw materials and semifinished goods being shipped between countries in Asia before the finished products are shipped out to other regions,” she said.

Sugar firms contract over 83% of 6 million tonnes Export target NEW DELHI: Indian sugar companies have contracted more than 83% of the export target of 6 million tonnes for the ongoing 2020-21 sugar season, said the Union food ministry. The surge in exports is mainly due to firm global prices and export subsidy, which has made exports lucrative. This gain in export momentum will

also help millers settle farmers’ cane arrears, which crossed Rs 23,000 crore till February, said officials. Domestic sales are also looking steady despite increasing cases of Covid-19 and lockdown in some parts of the country. “So far there is no impact on demand for the sweetener. A seven to 10-day-long lockdown can hardly impact the industry.

The demand this year in March was almost 20% more than last year in March. We have not seen any drop in consumption in April yet,” said Abinash Verma, Director General, Indian Sugar Mills Association. He said the lower production in top sugar producing countries, Brazil and Thailand, is helping the cause of India.

ICRA cuts FY22 GDP by 0.5%, sees economy expanding by 10.5% MUMBAI: Domestic rating agency Icra has cut its 2021-22 growth estimate by 0.5 per cent on the upper end, as a newer spate of lockdowns and restrictions get imposed in pockets to arrest the rising COVID-19 cases. The agency now expects the economy to grow 10-10.5 per cent in 2021-22, against the 10-11 per cent e s t i m a t e d e a r l i e r. S t a r t i n g w i t h Maharashtra, a slew of other pockets in the country like Delhi have been taking to localised lockdowns to arrest the climbing COVID-19 cases, which derails economic activity.

“For Q1 FY2022 (April-June 2021), we had earlier expected a GDP expansion of 27.5 per cent, boosted by the low base. “With the unprecedented surge in cases and evolving restrictions, the pace of GDP growth in the ongoing quarter may be tempered to 20-25 per cent,” the agency said. The recent surge in COVID-19 cases has resulted in a dip in consumer confidence and reignited uncertainty regarding the near-term outlook, it said. In sequential terms, the momentum eased for domestic airlines’ passenger traffic in March 2021, it said.

The report added that there are indications of a similar slackening in April 2021 in vehicle registrations, electricity demand and generation of GST e-way bills, reflecting the impact of the rise in infections and growing restrictions. In March, the economic activity recorded a broad-based and sharp improvement in the pace of y-o-y growth, relative to the previous month. It reflected the low base related to the commencement of the COVID -19 pandemic, the early restrictions and the subsequent nationwide lockdown in March 2020, the agency said.

Straits Orient Lines adds Asiatic Lloyd feeder boxship to expanding eet Cont’d. from Pg. 1 It may be interested in buying more ships if potentially good deals become available. The SOL Stride is the second of two that Straits Orient previously revealed it had purchased for a combined investment of $15. Its identity has not been disclosed until now. The first vessel, Vroon’s 1,702-teu Max Kudo (built 2008), was delivered to the company in early March and renamed SOL Promise. Both ships are being managed by Providence Ship Management. Both Straits Orient and Providence are part of the Mahesh Sivaswamy-led Transworld Group Singapore. The addition of the SOL Stride gives Straits Orient a fleet of 12 directly- owned containerships. Additional ships are chartered in or provided by route partners.

Asked whether it was actively searching for more ships to buy, a company executive said it was not ruling out the possibility. “We keep looking at the opportunities as they come, and if we find any such good opportunity to acquire another vessel, we will move,” the executive said, while noting that the company was committed to growth. Straits Orient was launched in 1999 and was rebranded from Orient Express Lines in July 2020. The company operates a sizeable route network between South East Asia, the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East.

DP World reports 10% volume growth in first quarter S H A R J A H : D P Wo r l d h a n d l e d 18.9 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) across its global portfolio of container terminals in the first quarter of 2021, with gross container volumes increasing by 10.2% year-on-year on a reported basis and up 9.6% on a like-for-like basis. The first quarter witnessed a strong start to the year and all three regions delivered growth, especially its terminals in India and Australia. Encouragingly, the stabilisation in Jebel Ali (UAE) continues with the terminal handling 3.5 million TEU in 1Q2021, up 2.6% year-on-year. At a consolidated level, its terminals handled 11.2 million TEU during the first quarter of 2021, increasing 8.2% on a reported basis and up 7.0% year-on-year on a like-for-like basis. Group Chairman and Chief Executive Ofcer Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem commented: “We are delighted with the strong start to 2021 with our portfolio delivering 10.2% volume growth in 1Q21, which is onceagain ahead of industry estimated growth of 8.9%. This performance is ahead of expectations and illustrates the resilience of the global container industry, and DP World’s continued ability to outperform the market.” Trade volume growth has accelerated and DP World’s strategy of providing integrated supply chain solutions to beneficial cargo owners has allowed it to benefit from this recovery. “Encouragingly, all our three regions delivered robust growth, with India and Australia being the key drivers,

while our flagship port of Jebel Ali (UAE) saw volumes grow at 2.6%,” he added.” “Looking ahead, while the near-term trading environment is positive, we remain mindful that the economic recovery can be disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical uncertainty in some parts of the Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem world and on-going trade war. “Overall, the strong start to the year leaves us well placed to deliver an improved performance in 2021, and despite the more benign trading environment, we remain focused on containing costs to grow profitability, managing growth capex and continued execution of our strategy of delivering supply chain solutions to beneficial cargo owners,” he concluded.

Farm Exports up 16.88 per cent in Apr-Feb FY21 BENGALURU : India exported agricultural commodities worth Rs 2.74 lakh crore till February of the 2020-21 fiscal, up by 16.88 per cent from Rs 2.31 lakh crore in the year-ago period, notwithstanding the pandemic, the Agriculture Ministry said. Similarly, imports of agriculture and allied commodities increased by 3 per cent to Rs 1,41,034 crore during April-February period of 2020-21 from 1,37,014 crore in the year-ago period. Despite COVID-19, balance of trade in agriculture has favourably increased to Rs 1,32,579.69 crore from Rs 93,907.76 crore in the said period. “India has consistently maintained trade surplus in the agricultural products over the years. …Even during the difficult time of the pandemic, India

took care not to disturb the world food supply chain and continued to export,” the agriculture ministry said in a statement. During April-February of the 2020-21 fiscal, the country exported agricommodities worth Rs 2.74 lakh crore as against Rs 2.31 lakh crore in the same period of the previous year. Among agri-commodities exported, wheat shipments rose in terms of value to Rs 3,283 crore in April-February from Rs 425 crore in the year-ago period. On specific demand from countries, NAFED has exported 50,000 tonnes wheat to Afghanistan and 40,000 tonnes to Lebanon under government-togovernment arrangement. In case of non-basmati rice export, the ministr y said the shipments increased to Rs 30,277 crore in April-

February of 2020-21 from Rs 13,030 crore in the year-ago period. This increase in rice exports was on account of multiple factors, mainly India capturing new markets like TimorLeste, Papua New Guinea, Brazil, Chile, and Puerto Rico. Exports were also made to Togo, Senegal, Malaysia, M a d a g a s c a r, I r a q , B a n g l a d e s h , Mozambique, Vietnam, Tanzania and Madagascar, it said. Soyameal exports rose to Rs 7,224 crore till February of the 2020-21 fiscal from Rs 3,087 crore earlier. Spices, raw cotton, fresh and processed vegetables are some other commodities that witnessed positive growth in the said period. India’s agricultural and allied exports during the entire 2019-20 fiscal was Rs 2.52 lakh crore, while imports were at Rs 1.47 lakh crore.

Transporters suffer Rs 1k cr a day losses due to fresh restrictions, lockdowns NEW DELHI : Tr uckers’ body AIMTC said the transporters are suffering losses of around Rs 1,000 crore per day due to the fresh restrictions and weekly lockdowns in some of the states, and these losses spike further if certain relief measures are not taken by the government to mitigate the situation. On April 12 when restrictions were imposed in Maharashtra, the research unit of the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) had assessed daily loss of about Rs 315 crore per day, AIMTC statement. According to fresh assessment, the daily losses to the transport industry have mounted to about Rs 1,000 crore per day, which are rising further with intensity and duration of the pandemicinduced lockdowns and curbs, it said. It sought proactive steps from the government such as on moratorium on equated-monthly instalment (EMI) payments, tax and insurance waiver and extension in e-way bill validity to avoid imminent financial crisis min the industry.

The lockdown and night curfew has been extended to other states (after Maharashtra first imposed it), due to rising number of COVID-19 cases, has disrupted the business and financial delinquencies have hit micro loans, MSME and commercial vehicles’ financing segment, it said. “This is going to further deepen the crisis,” the AIMTC said. The intensity and duration of lockdowns and curbs will further hit the sector badly. Therefore, immediate, prudent and proactive steps must be taken by the government to avoid another crisis in the offing, before it is too late, it warned in the statement. States such as Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and others have also imposed strict restrictions on the movement of non-essential goods, which has resulted in demand for vehicles going down by about 50 per cent and the subsequent increase in idle capacity, said the statement.

“If the situation worsens attracting fresh lockdowns and restrictions, then this loss will further augment leading to financial crises in the industry and excessive loss of livelihood,” said the AIMTC. AIMTC said its research unit predicted deterioration of financial situation among various sectors, including transportation s e c t o r, w h e r e p a y m e n t s a r e n o t forthcoming. This is due to low consumption, and demand manufacturers too are not realising their proceeds. This is going to augment bad loans and default of statutory compliance like taxes, insurance, fees and other statutory compliances like TCS, GSTR returns and TDS, among others, it said. “We have no resources at the backend as all payments are stuck. We could foresee worsening of the situation in the very near future. More than 20 crore people associated with the transport sector are forced under greater pressure and multi-fold challenges, leading to untold mental anxiety and financial distress,” said the statement.

Despite Covid-19, Odisha sees huge jump in Export turnover BHUBANESHWAR : Odisha has seen a big jump in export turnover in 2020-21 compared to the previous fiscal despite the adverse impact of Covid-19. Sources in the directorate of export promotion and marketing (DEPM) under the state MSME department said Odisha’s export turnover in the last fiscal is expected to cross Rs 74,000 crore, more than the Rs 51,742 crore it had generated in 2019-20. “Odisha’s total merchandise export figure is estimated at Rs 65,717 crore by February 2021. If March figure are added (they are yet to come), it would be around Rs 69,000 crore. Besides, export of information technology (IT) products is expected to be around Rs 5,000 crore,” said a senior government official. Comparative figures indicated a huge jump in export of metallurgical and mineral products compared to the

previous fiscal. Total value of minerals exported by the state till end of Febr uar y is estimated at Rs 22,808 crore. This was Rs 14,627 crore in 2019-20. Similarly, metallurgical products like steel and aluminium worth Rs 32,904 crore were exported by February, compared to Rs 24,811 crore the fiscal before. Experts in mining industry said the big jump could have been due to the demand for minerals in international market. “During the pandemic, the state government had allowed mining operation by listing it as an essential service. Also, port operations went on normally. These are some of the obvious reasons behind the growth in export of minerals from the state,” said Prabodh Mohanty, secretary, Eastern Zone Mining Association. “Around 90% of minerals from Odisha are exported to

China through various ports located in the state,” said an industry source. Export of engineering, chemical and allied (Rs 6,757 crore), marine (Rs 2,875 crore), agriculture and forest (Rs 159 crore), textiles (Rs 167 crore), pharmaceuticals (Rs 7 crore), handicrafts (Rs 6 crore) and others (Rs 34 crore) added to the enhanced turnover. The state government said the conducive atmosphere created to promote exports through ease of doing business, implementation of 5T mechanism, infrastructure support and facilities for quality standardization helped in achieving the growth in exports. “Though there was no direct revenue benefit to the state exchequer, the huge jump in export turnover shows growth of the state’s economy,” the government official added.

Milaha reports a 5% increase in Net Profit for Q1 2021 DOHA: Qatar Navigation (Milaha) Q.P.S.C. today announced its financial results for the three months ended March 31, 2021. Key nancial highlights: • Operating revenues of QAR 675 million for the three months ended March 31, 2021, compared to QR 692 million for the same period in 2020 • Operating profit of QAR 131 million for the three months ended March 31, 2021, compared to QAR 200 million for the same period in 2020 • Net profit of QAR 297 million for the three months ended March 31, 2021, compared to QAR 283 million for the same period in 2020 • Earnings per share increased to QAR 0.26 for the three months ended March 31, 2021 compared to QAR 0.25 for the same period in 2020 Milaha Maritime & Logistics’ net profit increased by QAR 12 million due to increased container shipping rates and operational optimization measures that

improved operating margins. Milaha Gas & Petrochem’s net profit decreased by QAR 7 million, due to a drop in tanker market rates, which more than offset higher income from our joint ventures and associates. Milaha Offshore’s net profit increased by QAR 80 million, mainly due to a reduction in vessel impairments compared to the same period last year. Milaha Capital’s net profit decreased by QAR 72 million, due to lower dividend income in our financial investment portfolio as well as one-off property sale gains recorded in 2020. Milaha Trading’s bottom line increased by QAR 1 million driven by top line sales growth of QAR 16 million. Port of Antwerp doubling Rail transport by 2030 ANTWERP: Doubling of rail cargo transport to and from the port by 2030. That is t h e a m b i t i o n o f Po r t o f Antwerp, Railport and Infrabel's joint rail vision, presented on 31 March. In concrete terms, this involves seven projects to help make the modal shift a reality. Rail transport essential for modal shift The modal shift will ensure that the port can grow sustainably and remains accessible, with consideration for the environment and surroundings. Rail plays an important role in this for the transport of containers and as a connection to the chemical industry in the hinterland. Did you know that one freight train takes 50 trucks off the road on average? Cargo transport by train also emits 9 times less CO2, causes 8 times less air pollution, is 6 times more energy efficient and reduces road congestion.

Port-wide collaboration Partnerships and collaboration are essential for implementing the modal shift to rail. Port of Antwerp, Maatschappij Linkerscheldeoever, Alfaport Voka and Essenscia urged Railport to start active discussions with Infrabel. The result is a rail vision that Port of Antwerp, Railport and Infrabel are seeking to implement as soon as possible. The rail vision includes a digital information platform, targeted investments, a neutrally operated marshalling yard and greater aggregation of volumes.
