T h e c o l l a b o r a t i o n b e t w e e n D P Wo r l d a n d t h e TradeLens platform will help accelerate the digitization of global supply chains. DP World aims to connect all its 82 marine and inland container terminals, as well as feeder companies and logistics divisions with TradeLens.

In 2019 DP World’s terminals handled 71.2 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) containers from around 70,000 vessels.

NEW DELHI: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said that in a fast ramp up of India’s export performance, outbound shipments will improve in May and June.

“While April was a washout with a 60% decline, the fall in exports in May will be 30-35%,” Goyal said at the Digital Summit on Exports organised by CII via video conferencing.

He said in June, exports can improve further and at par with June 2019 or a tad lower.

“In June, we can improve, (be) at par with June 2019 or 8-10% less. This is a pretty fast ramp-up,” he added.

Cancellation of orders had resulted in India’s merchandise exports contracting a sharp 60% from a year earlier to $10.36 billion in April.

It also aims to modernise manual and paper-based documents, replacing them with blockchain enabled digital solutions.

For DP World the data from its integration with TradeLens will improve operational efficiency with earlier visibility of container flows across multiple carriers. Such visibility includes confirmation of the transport modality that follows the port stay for each container, which in heavy transhipment or rail ports enable better yard planning. It will also expand the capabilities of DP World’s digital platforms created to move online the management of logistics. The DF Alliance, SeaRates, LandRates and AirRates enable shippers to move cargo to and from anywhere at the click of a mouse, across DP World’s network and beyond.

TradeLens provides visibility across the entire supply chain, from booking to clearance to payments and is built on a wealth of input from the industry including direct integrations with more than 110 ports and terminals, 15+ customs authorities around the world and an increasing number of intermodal providers.

ZIM’s revenue in Q1 2020 increases by 3.4% HAIFA: The container shipping industry is dynamic and volatile and has been marked in recent years by instability of market environment, characterized by volatility in freight rates and bunker prices, including significant uncertainties in the global trade, mainly due to USA-China related trade restrictions. Moreover, the recent escalation of the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak has significantly impacted global economies, resulting in reduced demand and spending across many sectors, adversely affected the volume of trades, while also decreasing bunker prices and charter rates.

Confronted with this challenging and unprecedented business environment, ZIM continued to improve its commercial and financial performance and to expand its global network to its customers.

Eli Glickman, ZIM President & CEO, said: “I’m pleased to report a significant improvement in ZIM’s performance, compared to the same period in 2019. Financial and Operating Highlights for the Three Months Ended March 31, 2020 • Total revenues were $823.2 million compared to $796.2 million in Q1 2019, a 3.4% increase • ZIM carried 638 thousand TEUs compared to 668 thousand TEUs in Q1 2019, a 4.5% decrease • The average freight rate per TEU was $1,091 compared to $1,019 in Q1 2019, a 7.1% increase • Adjusted EBITDA was $97.2 million compared to $69.3 million in Q1 2019 • EBITDA was $97.0 million compared to $68.0 million in Q1 2019 • Adjusted EBIT was $27.2 million compared to $22.0 million in Q1 2019 • EBIT was $24.9 million compared to $18.6 million in Q1 2019 • Adjusted net loss was $6.0 million compared to $17.5 million in Q1 2019 • Net loss was $11.9 million compared to $24.3 million in Q1 2019 • Operating cash flow was $101.6 million compared to $59.7 million in Q1 2019.

Highlighting that domestic market is the pedestal on which exports are made, he said: “We have to build up on domestic demand at competitive prices with surplus going to exports” and added that manufacturing revival,

diversification of export basket and focus on new markets will help expand India’s presence horizontally across the world.

Furniture, auto components, air conditioners including compressors and other components, and set top

boxes are the sectors where domestic demand is huge and where exports should be more than imports, he added.

Goyal added that PCBs, textiles and lithium ion batteries are the other sectors with huge opportunity for export.

FFFAI recommends pragmatic practices to deal with post lockdown pressure NEW DELHI: With the scenario changing gradually towards a new normal post lockdown 4.0 declaration and cargo operations are expected to face numerous challenges in the days to come, the Federation of Freight Forwarders’ Associations in India (FFFAI) has urged the Government as well as its own members to adopt pragmatic approach and practices to tide over. Meanwhile, FFFAI Executive Committee under the leadership of its Chairman Mr AV Vijaykumar has sent a number of delegations and correspondences to the Ministry of Commerce, Finance, Shipping, Aviation and Home Affairs separately to address the issues being faced by Custom Brokers, Freight Forwarders and entire logistics industry during ongoing lock down/curfew and possible impact on post lockdown period as regard to customs clearance and physical evacuation/operation of cargo. Delay, demurrage, detention, ground rent, storage charges or any other extra charges and likely enhanced freight charges would be the prime areas of concern.

“We, our members, continue to

serve the economy of the country as Custom Brokers risking their lives, to be in the forefront to handle Export Import cargo at the Customs and other related locations across the country. In fact, it is not the Customs Brokers who have resisted the deliveries to the Customers, but the Customer due to their own constraints,” Mr Vijaykumar underscored the critical role being played by the Customs Brokers. He further maintained that Customs Brokers with difficulty but also with pride are overcoming the challenges thrown by the lockdown - be it , nonavailability of transport vehicles for movement of cargo or public transport for travel of their staff, or the limited functioning of many Shipping Lines, Airlines, Freight Forwarders, NVOCCs, or major Custodians of cargo- ports, port terminals, air cargo terminals, CFSs, ICDs, Land Custom Station etc, who are operating with limited manpower and equipment. “We have reestablished our brand that “we deliver” and I sincerely appreciate the efforts of our entire fraternity to have carved a success story of our capabilities,” he affirmed.

Commenting on eventualities of further increase in transaction as well as overall logistics cost Mr Vijaykumar made clear, “With all the limitations prevailing now, there are bound to be delays in handling/delivering of cargo, leading to additional costs though not attributable to our service standards.”

He however commended the support extended by C u s t o m Authorities across the country in terms of costeffective and time-efficient Mr A. V. Vijaykumar solutions waiving late submission fee in Imports and digital processing of documents.

Mr Vijaykumar also appealed to all FFFAI members to play a very positive role for containing the virus by adhering to MHA guidelines: to wear mask whenever in any public place, frequent usage of sanitizer, social distancing, work from home wherever possible, avoid unnecessary travel, register with Aarogya Setu, consume home-made food and avoid outside eateries.

“Treat ourselves as though we are a carrier of the virus – you will try to protect others; treat all others as though they are carriers of the virus – you will protect yourself,” he made a caution.

Bleak Outlook for Container Shipping in near term, bounce back may happen in 2021, feel experts OSLO: Cold water is being poured on any optimistic outlook by some ocean carriers for a speedy recovery of the container industry from the impact of Covid-19.

In his latest assessment of the market, Bimco’s chief analyst, Peter Sand, said the current economic situation “provides no hope for a short-term recovery”.

“The coronavirus pandemic looks set to continue to hammer container shipping demand,” he added.

He said the lower demand that came when China shut down in February had passed, but had been replaced by a global demand shock as countries around the world entered lockdown as the epidemic spread.

Mr Sand believes “no sudden bounce back in demand” is expected, and noted that, even under the WTO’s most

optimistic forecast, “container shipping demand will fall by 10%” this year.

“Sales of containerised consumer goods have been some of the hardest-hit by lockdown measures, and lower consumer spending power is likely to persist for a prolonged period,” he said.

peak season, which is when retailers stock up for Christmas – but is any retailer seriously predicting strong Christmas sales this year?

“My most optimistic prediction of a rebound is 2021,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Sand noted that the idle container ship fleet had reached a new record of 2.65 m TEU, due to the aggressive blanking of sailings by carriers, which has so far protected freight rates from collapsing.

But, he said, this strategy would be “tested in the coming months” and was only “temporarily hiding the losses”.

He explained: “While savings are made by not sailing, the empty ships are still generating loss on a daily basis – some operating costs are still present and financing unchanged, while not providing any income.”

The German flagged heavy lift vessel ‘M.V Maria’ with LOA of 151.67 metres & draft of 8.50 metres was berthed at VOC-II berth at 1324 Hrs on 26.05.2020 for loading the wind blade.

The loading of the windblade of length 72.40 metres was executed diligently using 3 Ship’s Hydraulic cranes. The Shipper of the above windblade is Nordex India Private Limited, Thiruvallur, and the cargo is consigned by. Nordex Energy GMBH, Germany, to Port of Antwerp, Belguim.

Thermal Coal imports slump 30% to 7.8 MT in April at Major Ports : IPA NEW DELHI: Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, thermal coal imports at India”s 12 major ports saw a 30.46 per cent plunge at 7.8 million tonnes (MT) in the first month of the current fiscal, as per the ports body IPA. These Centre-owned ports had handled 11.27 MT of thermal coal in the same month of 2018-19.

The Indian Ports Association (IPA), which maintains cargo data handled by these 12 ports, in its latest report said “percentage variation from previous year” in thermal coal handling was at 30.46 per cent.

Imports of coking and other coal too declined 17.07 per cent at 4.27 MT during the month. These ports had handled 5.15 MT of coking coal in the corresponding month last fiscal.

Thermal coal is the mainstay of

India”s energy programme as 70 per cent of power generation is dependent on the dry fuel, while coking coal is used mainly for steel-making.

India is the third-largest producer of coal after China and the US and has 299 billion tonnes of resources and 123 billion tonnes of proven reserves, which may last for over 100 years.

These ports had recorded a 21 per cent decline in cargo volumes to 47.42 MT in April this year, mainly due to coronavirus outbreak.

Ports like JNPT, Chennai, Cochin and Kamrajar witnessed huge decline in cargo handling, as per the latest data.

Chennai Port saw a massive 38.17 per cent fall in cargo handling to 2.44 MT and JNPT by 33.97 per cent to 3.95 MT in April.

slipped 33.73 per cent to 1.87 MT, and Kamrajar Port 30.03 per cent to 2.08 MT, the data showed.

Container trade was severely hit as it recorded a decline of 36.98 per cent in terms of TEU (twenty foot equivalent unit), followed by 30.46 per cent fall in thermal coal.

Rating agency Icra had last week said that while all cargo segments are vulnerable, container segment is expected to be more adversely impacted.

It said that while general cargo throughput may witness 5-8 per cent contraction for full year 2020-21, the container segment may witness a decline of 12-15 per cent during the same period.

These major ports had handled 705 MT cargo in the last fiscal.

Angré Port continues to handle sugar exports amid COVID-19 MUMBAI: Angré Port Private Limited, the most sheltered all-weather port in the Konkan region, has been bucking the trend amid COVID-19 by efficiently handling 22,000 MT of sugar exports in April 2020.

While the industry has been facing labor crunch due to the reverse migration, Angré Port has ensured safe handling of exports without any hassles. With this, the port has handled a total of 1,50,000 MT of sugar exports in FY20. Additionally, for the first time since its inception, Angré Port simultaneously loaded two separate mother vessels with sugar.

Throughout the nation's battle against COVID-19, Angré Port has been in close contact with local authorities, Customs, Maharashtra Maritime Board, among other authorities to align the port's operations with government directives and measures. This has ensured timely movement of cargo from the port to various destinations across the globe. Through robust port safety measures, state-of-the-art cargo equipment, and reliable warehousing facilities, Angré Port

has been able to come to the aid of the sugar consignments seeking a safe port for exports, helping them with a sense of urgency to achieve export volumes as the window is quickly closing because of approaching monsoons. Labour shortage and COVID-19 restrictions caused ports in Mumbai and Kandla face serious issues, especially during this peak sugar season.

Despite having enough cargo and business, ports are struggling to cope with the requests of traders. Angré Port has set exemplar y standards to stand out weathering these challenges to support all its customers to reach their target export volumes.

Can LCL operators charge Demurrage & Detention to clients?

VA D O D A R A : The Demurrage relates to cargo while the cargo is in the Container and the Detention relates to equipment while the cargo is in the Container.

As you can see, both Demurrage and Detention relates to containers or equipment that is owned or operated Mr. Shine Jacob by the shipping line but used by the customer on a temporary basis after which they have to return it.

Till such time as the container remains in the hands of the customer, it will incur either Demurrage or Detention depending on whether the cargo is still inside or not respectively.

LCL Demurrage and Detention H o w e v e r, i n the case of LCL shipments, the Shipping Line operates the container and therefore, is responsible to off load the contents of the container at their CFS. So they cannot charge anyone for the demurrage or detention as the container is under their control and not in the hands of a 3rd party client like in the case of FCL cargo.

But if the cargo is lying uncleared in the CFS under the control of the shipping line, the shipping line may charge storage charges on the volume of space occupied by the cargo..

If the container is however operated or under the control of a Groupage operator, it is possible that the shipping line can charge demurrage or detention to the Groupage operator because they kept the box more than the allowed free time.

MT Sanmar Royal - First Crew change at Tuticorin Anchorage by J.M. Baxi & Co. TUTICORIN: J. M. Baxi & Co. Tuticorin branch was successful in handling crew change (10 on/10 off) on MT Sanmar Royal at anchorage and with this we are once again proud to be the first to handle crew change at this anchorage. The on-signers were accommodated in the quarantine center and had been taken on board through port tug after receiving their COVID-19 test report negative. Similarly, off-signers also reached shore by port tug and taken to the quarantine center for COVID-19 test and after receiving the test report we will arrange a vehicle for them to reach their respective hometown.

Owners were so happy and satisfied for the timely and smooth service provided by the J. M. Baxi & Co. Tuticorin that they are now planning to divert their one more vessel to Tuticorin for crew change.

A special thanks to VOC Port Trust, DG Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Customs, PHO and Dr. Arun Kumar District Health Officer at Tuticorin, for all the help extended towards carrying out crew change activities during lockdown period.
