ANTWERP: X-Press
r , announced the launch of its second green methanol-powered route, the Green Baltic X-PRESS (GBX) It is part of Europe’s first scheduled feeder network powered by green methanol. This expansion follows the successful launch of the Green Finland XPRESS (GFX) in July and marks another significant milestone in the company’s commitment to sustainable shipping.
The Green Baltic X-PRESS (GBX) will commence operations on 23 August, offering services between the following ports:
• Rotterdam > Antwerp-Bruges > Klaipeda > Riga > Rotterdam
The introduction of the GBX route was made possible because X-Press Feeders has received a third dual-fuel ship, the Eco-Umande. This vessel joins Eco-Maestro and Eco-Levant as part of the company’s dual-fuel fleet capable of operating on green methanol, solidifying X-Press Feeders’ leadership in sustainable maritime shipping. These new, highly fuel-efficient vessels incorporate the latest technology and advancements in ship design. Each vessel has a nominal TEU of 1,260.
“Building on the momentum of our first green methanol-powered route, we are excited to launch the Green Baltic X-PRESS, expanding our feeder network powered by green methanol and providing more sustainable shipping options to our customers,” says Francis Goh, Chief Operating Ofcer of X-Press Feeders.
“The addition of the Eco-Umande to our fleet underscores our commitment to innovation and decarbonization in the maritime industry.”
Continuing the Commitment to Sustainability
X-Press Feeders’ new feeder network is powered by green methanol, a sustainable marine fuel that reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 65 percent, in terms of main engine propulsion, when using green methanol instead of conventional fuels. Green methanol is a r e n e w a b l e e n e r g y s o u r c e p r o d u c e d f r o m t h e decomposition of organic matter, such as waste and residues. The green methanol that X-Press Feeders is using is independently certified in Europe under ISCC
(International Sustainability and Carbon Certification).
The launch of the GBX route is particularly timely as the EU’s emissions trading scheme (ETS) for maritime shipping came into effect on 1 January this year, encouraging shippers to adopt more sustainable practices. Additionally, the Fuel EU Maritime regulations are set to begin in January 2025 and will require a reduction in the greenhouse gas emission intensity of energy used on board ships.
The Port of Rotterdam will be serving as the initial base for this network due to its infrastructure and capability to handle green methanol refuelling. The company has also signed a memorandum of understanding with the ports of: Antwerp Bruges, Klaipeda in Lithuania, Riga in Latvia, Tallinn in Estonia, Helsinki and HaminaKotka in Finland to promote shipping powered by green methanol These partnerships play a crucial role in supporting this innovative network and ensuring seamless, sustainable logistics across the region.
X-Press Feeders ordered 14 dual-fuel vessels which it continues to take delivery of, so it plans to further expand its green methanol-powered network across Europe, providing more companies with the opportunity to achieve their sustainability goals through more sustainable shipping.
“X-Press Feeders is dedicated to being at the forefront of sustainable shipping, and the launch of the Green Baltic X-PRESS represents another step in our journey toward decarbonizing the maritime industry,” adds Goh.

NEW DELHI: The United States has emerged as India's top trading partner in January-June this year, while the country has recorded its highest trade deficit of $41.6 billion with China during the period, think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said.
I n d i a e x p o r t s g o o d s t o 239 countries of which 126 countries showed positive growth in exports.
Imports from Russia grew to $34 4 billion from $30 8 billion, a 11.65% increase.

merchandise exports rose 5.41% to $230.51 billion during the first half of 2024, led by sectors like iron ore, pharmaceuticals, precious stones, b a s m a t i r i c e , c

Major countries with increased exports include the USA, UAE, the Netherlands, Singapore, and China. H

I n t h e f
China remained the largest import supplier, with imports increasing from $46.2 billion to $50.1 billion.
"India should continue to focus on increasing product quality and supply chain competitiveness. Since every big country is into inward mode, India should not surrender its policy space especially in new issues in free trade agreements and Indo-Pacific Economic Framework," said GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava.
On the services front, exports grew 6.9% to $178.2 billion, while the imports rose 5 79% to $95 billion
NEW DELHI: The Government has invited proposals from companies to set up E-commerce Export Hubs (ECEH) in the country that will be first launched on a pilot basis The companies have been asked to submit detailed proposals to the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) for examination, support and hand holding.
Further to the pilot launch and suitable feedback, notifications and circulars shall also be issued, a trade notice by the DGFT said.
In the Foreign Trade Policy of 2023 the intent and roadmap for setting up e-commerce export hubs was outlined. They have been proposed as designated areas, which would act as a centre for favourable business infrastructure and facilities for cross border e-commerce activities.
The major objectives of ECEH are to provide for predictability and shortest possible turnaround time for e-commerce exports, easy re-import for e-commerce returns or rejects, and bringing various cross-border stakeholders under one roof
The handling of product returns and flexibility in payment realisation essential for e-commerce exports would require a change in regulations by the customs department and Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

flexibility on payments for shipments as selling prices fluctuate in this medium The draft of Foreign Exchange Management (Export and Import of Goods and Services) Regulations 2024 released by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) also proposes flexibility on payments received for exports. If implemented it will also facilitate e-commerce exports.
The DGFT also released the draft modalities for setting up these export hubs. ECEH shall have two distinct segregated areas. First will be the fulfilment area for packing, labelling, storing and other activities till a buyer is found. The second area will be a customs station where the goods will be customs cleared after the buyer is found, ready for dispatch.
ECEH will function to achieve a
e-commerce exporters like storage, packaging, labelling, certification and testing and other common facilities for the purpose of exports.
These hubs are likely to come up near airports and ports The hubs would be set up by the industry and would not involve any financial commitment from the Government T h e F T P
e-commerce exports potential for India is in the range of $200-300 billion by 2030. Global e-commerce exports are expected to touch $2 trillion in 2030 from $800 billion now India’s exports through this medium is only about $ 5 billion as compared to China’s $ 250 billion annually.
China, which is a leader in e-commerce exports, is also a pioneer in export hubs for e-commerce China’s exports through this route are 6.4% of its total merchandise exports in 2023 while for India this figure
COLOMBO: The transshipment volumes declined for the third straight month, bringing to a four-month low in July this year, as the Colombo Port started to see competition from the n e w l y o p e r a t i o n a l i s e d A d a n i ’ s Vizhinjam Port located in South India.
In July, the transshipment volumes handled by the port declined by 6 percent year-on-year (YoY) to 489,286 of 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), recording the steepest decline so far seen during this year The number of container ships calling at the Colombo Port also declined by 17.8 percent YoY to 277 ships in the month.
The overall transshipment volumes grew by 7.3 percent YoY to 3.68 million TEUs in the first half of this year,
driven by a double-digit growth recorded during the first four months of the year, before the port started to experience heavy congestion, resulting in significant delays, forcing shipping lines to reroute some of their services.
Adani’s Vizhinjam International Seaport, which commenced limitedscale commercial operation from July 11, this year, has positioned itself to benefit from this development.
According to media reports, the vessel-related charges (VRC) for Vi z h i n j a m c a l l s h a v e b e e n s e t substantially lower than the rating scale at the Colombo Port. A 30,000 gross registered tonnage, requiring a 24-hour b e r t h s t a y, w o u l d o n l y i n c u r approximately US $ 10,000 towards
VRC at Vizhinjam, compared with about US $ 21,000 at the Colombo Port.
As per the media reports, Maersk has already devised a network revamp plan toshiftsomeofitstransshipmentcallsfor Indian cargo, usually moving via the ColomboPort, totheVizhinjamPort In July, the overall container throughput at the Colombo Port also declined by 1.5 percent YoY to 615,727 TEUs.
In the month, the import container (laden) volumes were up by 25.3 percent YoY to 48,331 TEUs, while the export container (laden) volumes were up by 3.3 percent YoY to 27,039 TEUs. The restowing volumes at the port jumped by 46.5 percent YoY to 22,640 TEUs in the month.

These discussions and visits reinforce the strong and growing relationship between India and Singapore, highlighting the strategic importance of their economic and educational partnerships in driving future growth and development. Singapore has been a major source of FDI for India. In the year 2023-24, Singapore was the largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI) for India, with an estimated $11.77 billion in inflows. In bilateral trade, Singapore was the 6th largest global trade partner of India in 2023-24 with a total trade of $35.61 billion.
NEW DELHI: Foreign Direct Inflows to India increased by 26.4%, r e a c h i n g $ 2 2 4 b i l l i o n d u r i n g April-June, marking the fastest expansion in nearly five quarters, amidst indications of a global rise in cross-border investment.
Gross inflows had risen by approximately 23% in the previous quarter, despite a decline in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) over the last two financial years, which the Government attributed to weak
sentiments in developed markets The latest data from the Reserve Bank of India's Bulletin revealed a 37.6% rise in inflows in June, which was slower than the 49% growth seen in May.
M
services, communication services, computer services, and electricity and other energy sectors accounted for about 80% of the gross FDI inflows. With around 75% of the flows, the
Netherlands, the US, and Belgium," the Bulletin stated.
A detailed breakdown of the data indicated that a significant portion of the increase was due to equity investments in the country These investments rose by 46% during the first quarter to $16.5 billion. Notably, around a fourth, or $4.2 billion, was allocated for the acquisition of shares, which is 2.5 times higher than the $1.6 billion seen during April-June 2023.

N E W D E L H I : T h e r e c e n t developments in Bangladesh have implications for India not only in the political sphere but also in economic arena Because of its fast pace economic growth over last decade Bangladesh has emerged as one of India’s leading export destinations in the world and the largest in the South Asian region in the recent years. In fact, in 2023-24, India’s exports to Bangladesh were higher than many of the world’s leading economies like Japan, Ger many and France However, the ongoing socio-political turmoil has impacted economic activities in Bangladesh and is very likely to adversely affect its bilateral trade relations with India.
One of the biggest achievements of former Bangladesh Prime Minister S h e i k h H a s i n a h a s b e e n t h e impressive economic progress over the last decade or so During her tenure from 2009-2024, Bangladesh’s economy had grown at an average rate of 6.3 per cent per annum, which is among the highest in the world. The size of its gross domestic product (GDP) has more than trebled increasing from US$ 123 billion to US$ 455 billion. The per capita GDP has also increased from US$ 841 in 2009 to US$ 2,650 in 2024.
Propelled by a robust economic growth Bangladesh has moved up from being a low-income country to a low middle income country in 2015. The youngest South Asian nation has also been able to make a big dent on its poverty As per the World Bank estimate, the proportion of population living in extreme poverty has declined from about 12 per cent in 2010 to 5 00 per cent in 2022 Additionally, t h e c o u n t r y h a s w i t n e s s e d a significant improvement in its human development index (HDI) over the last decade. As per the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Bangladesh’s HDI value was 0.67 in 2022 compared to 0.56 in 2010.
The rising economic prosperity in Bangladesh has been accompanied, rather driven, by an impressive growth in country’s international trade profile. While its merchandise exports have increased from US$ 15 billion in 2009 to US$ 56 billion in 2023 the imports have grown even faster increasing from US$ 22 billion in 2009 to more than US$ 88 billion in 2022 before shrinking to US$ 67 billion in 2023. Increasing demand for imports of a variety of goods in Bangladesh has driven its trade with India The bilateral trade between the two countries has surged remarkably over last one and half decades. The rise in bilateral trade has also been driven by intra-industry, especially in textile and clothing sector
India-Bangladesh two-way trade in goods has grown faster than that of India’s total merchandise trade with rest of the world. While the value of India’s global merchandise trade in 2023 was 2.5 times the value in 2009, the size of bilateral trade was 5.5 times. Between 2009-2023, the size of bilateral merchandise trade has increased from US$ 2.4 billion to US$ 13 1 billion India’s exports to Bangladesh have also grown faster than that of its total exports to rest of the world. As a result, the share of Bangladesh in India’s merchandise e x p o r t s h a s i n c r e a s e d f r o m 1.2 per cent in 2009 to 2.6 per cent in 2023. Share of Bangladesh in India’s merchandise exports was higher than s
Japan (1.2%), South Korea (1.5%), France (1.7%) and Germany (2.2%) in 2023.
India’s export to Bangladesh reached to a record level of US$ 14 billion in 2021 before declining to US$ 13.8 billion in 2022 and US$ 11.3 billion in 2023. The decline in Indian exports was mainly due to overall decrease in demand for imports in Bangladesh which has been caused by multiple challenges, like high inflation, Russia – Ukraine war induced supply chain disruptions, the Bangladesh economy has been facing during the post Covid period The ongoing socio-political turbulence is likely to further deteriorate economic environment in Bangladesh and adversely affect its demand for imports from India.
The Indian export basket to Bangladesh consists of a variety of products and is substantially diversified and includes cotton, fuel products, vegetables, coffee and tea, automobile goods, machinery and electrical equipment, metal products. India’s imports from Bangladesh, on the other hand, are highly c o n c e n t r a t e d i n f e w s e c t o r s . For instance, in 2023, more than 59 per cent of Indian imports consisted of textile and clothing products. Other items of import include fish, leather products and footwear
Since a substantial proportion of Indian merchandise exports to Bangladesh consists of labourintensive products an adverse impact on their demand would lead not only to loss of export earnings but also reduced jobs for the Indian workers. The industry that is likely to be the most affected in India is textile and clothing which is labour intensive and constitutes about 24 per cent of India’s total merchandise exports to Bangladesh. However, given that Bangladesh is also India’s competitor in textiles and clothing sector, especially in clothing segment, the
overall effect is likely to be mix. The disruption in Bangladesh economic activities would lead to reduction in demand for import of cotton, which is a major constituent of Indian exports to Bangladesh. Since Bangladesh is the largest market for Indian cotton, constituting about 35% of India’s global export of cotton, disruption in its demand will have an adverse impact on all the Indian stakeholders, including the farmers, involved in production and supply of cotton.
However, decline in demand for importsinBangladeshcouldalsoleadto decrease in cotton prices in India which w i l l h e l p i m p r o v i n g t h e c o s t competitiveness of Indian garment sector Additionally, given that Bangladesh is one of India’s biggest competitors in the world market, supply disruptions in that country could lead to increase in demand for Indian garment products in the global market. However, it would be difficult for Indian exports to substitute the Bangladesh supplies in a major way as their capacity to fulfil the global demand in a longer term is less thanadequate
India also exports a number of agricultural products to Bangladesh. Edible vegetables are one the biggest items of agricultural exports and Bangladesh constitutes more than 20 per cent of India’s global exports of that group of products. The ongoing strife is likely to affect its demand and all the stakeholders, including farmers, involved in supply of vegetables will likely get the hit Bangladesh is also a major market for Indian tea & coffee and likely to be impacted by the crisis. Although rice is also a major item of export from India to Bangladesh its demand may not be affected in a big way given that it is an essential part of their staple food. Another important sector that could receive negative effect is India’s energy sector as Bangladesh constitutes 2.6 per cent of India’s fuels export to the world market. Other key sectors that are likely to come under stress due to crisis in India’s eastern neighbour include metals products, mechanical and electrical appliances and transportation goods would.
Given that Bangladesh has emerged as an important destination for several Indian goods, the ongoing socio-political turmoil is likely to affect economic activities in that country and, consequently, dampen the demand for those goods from India Although the crisis could present an opportunity for India in the global clothing market, Indian exports are unlikely to replace Bangladesh in a significant way due to the inadequate supply capacity of Indian exporters.
