NEW DELHI: World MSME Day celebrated annually on June 27, is designated by the United Nations General Assembly and dedicated to recognizing the critical role that MSMEs play in fostering inclusive a n d s u s t a i n a b l e e c o n o m i c development in India and globally
To be sure, MSMEs have been the backbone of many economies, especially developing countries, c o n t r i b u t i n g s i g n i f i c a n t l y t o employment generation, poverty reduction, and economic growth MSMEs operate across various sectors, including manufacturing, services, agriculture, and trade, driving innovation, entrepreneurship, and local development.
The observance of World MSME Day highlights the substantial contributions of MSMEs to the global economy and acts as a platform to raise awareness about the challenges faced by MSMEs This includes access to finance, technology, skills d e v e l o p m e n t , a n d m a r k e t opportunities.
According to the United Nations
C o n f e r e n c e o n T r a d e a n d Development, formal and informal MSMEs make up over 90 per cent of
all companies worldwide, average of 70 per cent of total employment and 50 per cent of GDP
Despite their significance, MSMEs continue to face challenges, primarily around access to finance.
As per the International Finance Corporation (IFC) reports that around 65 million firms, or 40 per cent of formal MSMEs in developing countries, have an unmet financing need of $5.2 trillion annually. This gap is equivalent to 1.4 times the current level of global MSME lending.
Moreover, regional disparities in access to finance also exist. East Asia and the Pacific account for the largest share (46 per cent) of the total global f i n a n c e g a p , f o l l o w e d b y Latin America and the Caribbean (23 per cent), and Europe and Central Asia (15 per cent). The financing gap is even more pronounced when considering micro and informal enterprises.
“ T h e g a p v o l u m e v a r i e s considerably by region,” according to the IFC. “Latin America and the Caribbean and the Middle East and North Africa have the highest proportion of the finance gap compared to potential demand,
88 per cent, respectively. About half of the formal SMEs lack access to formal credit.”
India is home to approximately 63 million MSMEs, as reported by the MSME Ministry’s FY23 annual report. This number is second only to China’s approximately 140 million micro and small enterprises. Indian MSMEs contribute about 30 per cent to the GDP , over 40 per cent to exports, and have created 110 million jobs.
Currently, as per details available o n t h e G o v e r n m e
y a m registration portal, 46 million MSMEs were registered with the MSME Ministr y and reported 200 million jobs
In addition to World MSME Day, India also observes National Small Industry Day annually on August 30. This day celebrates the contribution of the small-scale industry to the countr y ’s growth The Indian Government launched an extensive policy package for small industry on August 30, 2000, and since then, National Small Industry Day has been observed to recognize the efforts and achievements of small industries in India.

NEW DELHI: Ahead of PM Narendra Modi’s proposed visit to Moscow in July 2nd week, IndiaRussia trade via International North South Transport Corridor (INSTC) has got a major boost as consignment of coal from Siberia has been exported to India via KazakhstanTurkmenistan-Iran branch of INSTC.
The consignment will reach Mumbai port via Bandar Abbas port in Iran, it is learnt. “For the first time, two trains with Kuzbass coal headed to India along the International North-South Transport Corridor The trains set off from the Kemerovo region They followed along the eastern branch of the INSTC through Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan to the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas,” Russian Railways said recently in a statement.
While addressing a key geopolitical platfor m – P rimakov Reading – in Moscow, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, “India is a key priority for us, 60% of trade is in
national currencies now.”
The visit of the PM would give further boost to INSTC and there are plans to link it with the Chabahar Port. There are three international transport corridor routes under INSTC trans-Caspian (railways and ports), as well as western and eastern (overland). There are plans to link INSTC with the North Sea Route of the Arctic in future.
The INSTC is a multimodal route from St. Petersburg to Mumbai and has helped to push Indo-Russian b
Construction of the INSTC started in the early 2000s, but developing it further has taken on a new impetus in light of the restrictions facing Moscow The route is an alternative to China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
The delivery time for goods from Russia to India via the INSTC is around 23 days, which is faster than shipping via the Suez Canal, which typically takes up to 45 days, according to Russian Railways.
Moscow is seeking to both ensure interconnectivity throughout the INSTC and launch regular freight shipping lines, President Vladimir Putin has said. The volume of goods shipped via the INSTC is expected to almost triple over the next seven y e a r s . P u t i n h a s s u g g e s t e d establishing a logistics hub for the corridor along the African coast.
Meanwhile, sources in Moscow have dismissed Pakistan’s plan to join INSTC which is a connectivity route to connect Russia with Iran via Mumbai and there are plans to connect Chahbahar port with INSTC in future. Pakistan in a bizarre announcement claimed that it has been invited to join INSTC.
India has been ramping up purchases of both coking and thermal coal from Russia since Moscow redirected exports from EU countries and offered substantial discounts to Asian buyers. India continues to rely on coal as its primary source of power generation.
NEW DELHI: The Centre is likely to extend a key support scheme for e x p o r t c r e d i t t o e n h a n c e competitiveness of India's export sector, which was hit hard by slowdown in the developed countries, said people familiar with the matter.
The upcoming budget could extend the scheme for pre- and postshipment rupee export credit by five years, they said. The Commerce and Industry ministry has proposed an extension of the interest equalisation scheme beyond June 30, its sunset date, wherein manufacturer micro,
small and medium enterprises (MSME) get 3% benefit and exporters of 410 identified tariff lines get 2% incentive. "The scheme is in place till June 30. There could be some small changes but the broad contours will remain the same," said an official, who did not wish to be identified, adding that the Finance Ministry will take a final call on the proposal The Government has allocated Rs. 9,538 crore to the scheme since 2021-22 and an additional outlay of Rs. 2,500 crore was given in December last year Under the scheme, the benefit to
access bank credit at a subsidised interest rate to individual exporters is capped at Rs. 10 crore per annum per import export code. The subsidy is provided by the banks and they are later reimbursed by the Government for their lower interest earnings. Exporters use the scheme to lower their cost of credit which improves their competitiveness. While industry has demanded higher incentive rates of 5% for MSMEs and 3% for the exporters of the 410 products, respectively, the benefits are unlikely to be changed, the official said.
NEW DELHI : A recent analysis reveals that India’s Major Ports have emerged as leaders in handling coastal cargo, outper for ming non-major and private ports in this crucial sector of maritime logistics. Coastal cargo refers to goods transported between ports within the country, playing a vital role in supporting domestic trade and industrial operations.
In FY24, the major ports handled 817.98 mt of cargo of which Export I m p o r t c a r g o w a s 6 3 0 7 6 m t , accounting for a 77.11 percent share whereas coastal cargo was 187.22 mt with a 22.89 percent share.
In comparison, the non-major ports handled 721.05 mt of cargo in
FY24 with overseas cargo accounting for 584.09 mt (81.01 percent share) while coastal cargo was 136.96 mt (18 99 percent share), the data showed.
T
facilitating efficient coastal shipping, d
efficiencies, and strategic locations. These ports have consistently managed a larger share of coastal cargo traffic, showcasing their capability to handle significant volumes and meet the growing demands of maritime trade.
The leadership of major ports in coastal cargo handling not only
enhances logistics efficiency but also c o n
i n g transportation costs and easing congestion on road networks. It aligns with India’s strategic efforts to promote modal shift towards more sustainable and cost-effective transportation modes, such as sea routes. As India continues to expand its port capacities and modernise infrastructure, the role of major ports in coastal cargo management is expected to further strengthen This trend is crucial for bolstering trade facilitation, supporting economic growth, and enhancing competitiveness in the global maritime landscape.
NEW DELHI: In 2023, the Indian Government set an ambitious goal of achieving $2 trillion in exports by 2030, evenly split between merchandise and services However, India’s merchandise exports decreased by 3% from $451 billion in fiscal year 2022-23 to $437.1 billion in 2023-24. To reach the $1 trillion merchandise export target by 2030, India’s exports needs to grow by $570-600 billion, at a 15% compounded annual growth rate.
Given the absence of a clear path to boost exports through traditional methods and anticipated geoeconomic changes disr upting manufacturing and distribution across the world, India must prioritize e-commerce exports.
C u r r e n t l y, I n d i a ’ s a n n u a l e-commerce exports are in a range of $4-5 billion, with the government s t r i v i n g t o i n c r e a s e t h i s t o $250-300 billion by 2030. This growth target represents 43-50% of India’s m e r c h a n d i s e e x p o r t g r o w t h aspirations.
A c h i e v i n g t h i s r e q u i r e s c o l l a b o r a t i o n a m o n g t h e Government, State Governments, Reserve Bank of India, e-commerce platforms and service providers to empower Indian micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to compete globally
Despite a global trade slowdown, e-commerce continues to expand at a 9% annual rate; its size as a market is projected to reach $8.1 trillion and capture 47% of worldwide retail sales by 2026. China leads in e-commerce in terms of market size, followed by the US, UK, EU, Japan and South Korea. India’s domestic e-commerce market is valued at $70 billion and forecast to reach $325 billion by 2030.
However, a significant portion of products sold on global e-commerce platforms are Chinese-made and sold by third-party sellers. In 2023, China’s e-commerce exports were estimated at $300-350 billion According to Marketplace Pulse, Chinese sellers
comprise 50% of the top sellers on A m a z o n . c o m . A m a z o n e v e n acknowledged its heavy reliance on Chinese sellers, suppliers and marketing budgets in a regulatory filing.
Additionally, platforms like TikTok Shop, Shein and Temu allow Chinese sellers to sell directly in international markets, bypassing Amazon, Walmart and eBay While China progresses up the e-commerce exports value chain from ‘Made in China’ to ‘Marketed by China,’ India’s e-commerce exports lag behind.
Since the early 2000s, the Chinese government has fostered an enabling policy environment, establishing cross-border e-commerce pilot zones in over 100 cities For millions of Chinese sellers, these zones offer seamless customs, taxation, forex, financing and transportation services under one roof.
China’s customs procedures not only provide an efficient green channel for e-commerce exports, but also simplify international customer returns, a critical feature of e - c o m m e r c e C
streamlined processes for foreign
compliance.
It also actively promotes Chinese brands and soft power to address perception issues and stimulate global demand While China’s e-commerce growth is driven by focussed Government support, it is powered by a smooth seller and manufacturer experience.
In contrast, India’s e-commerce journey has suffered from inadequate policy support. Before the 2023 Foreign Trade Policy, which included a chapter on e-commerce exports, e-commerce exports received minimal attention. Even now, the extant export rules favour lowvolume, high-value business-tobusiness (B2B) conventional exports
e-commerce exports.

To e n h a n c e I n d i a ’ s e x p o r t competitiveness, the government must prioritize e-commerce exports as a key element of its 100-day agenda This requires revising the Foreign Trade Policy, eliminating EDPMS closure charges for e-commerce exportsandimplementingboldreforms acrosspaymentreconciliation,customs clearance, customer returns and complianceburden.

NEW DELHI: Economic thinktank National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) Wednesday pegged India’s FY25 growth at about 7.5% on the back of buoyant economic activity
“GDP (Gross Domestic Product) growth during 2024-25 may turn out to be higher than 7% and even closer to 7.5%,” said Poonam Gupta, Director General, NCAER.
The monthly economic review for June noted that this outlook was underpinned by the buoyancy in economic activity witnessed in the first quarter, a keen policy focus on investment and growth and macroeconomic stability; and t h e e x p e c t a t i o n s o f n o r m a l monsoon.
The RBI raised its projections for India's real GDP growth for
FY 2024-25 to 7 2% from 7%
Ms Gupta, however, said taming food prices remains a challenge “A broader policy framework may be needed to address it, including building climate-resilient food supply as also a gentle shift toward packaged and preserved food supply to bridge the periodical supply and demand gap that has become routine,” she said.

MUMBAI: The National Logistics Day acknowledges the role of the logistics sector in facilitating India's economic development through efficient transportation of goods across the country and beyond borders. At the same time, for the industry, it's a day to take stock of how far the industry has progressed and chart the future roadmap for growth. The policymakers have shown a continued focus on transforming the logistics industry through infrastructure and technology-led reforms. The rollout of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, National Logistics Policy, and Unified Logistics Interface Platform are significant policy moves by the central government. As a result, India has climbed from the 44th to the 38th position out of 139 nations in 2023. The industry is now poised for the next phase of growth. To unlock the potential, the sector requires sustained policy support and increased capex in transport as well as digital infrastructure development in particular, which will pave the way for new-age
technology deployment for better
manufacturing hub and the domestic ecommerce sector is growing at a faster clip, a broadbased distribution network and end-to-end supply chain visibility are crucial to meet the growing logistics transportation demand, both in the domestic and global markets Therefore, the logistics sector must be empowered to innovate and thrive in an increasingly complex logistics and supply chain ecosystem especially in an interconnected world. An efficient and resilient logistics industry with robust multimodal connectivity, new-age digital technology adoption, and effective sustainable practices will increase the demand for India’s logistics sector, contributing to the country’s GDP growth to reach US $6 trillion by 2030.
