Maersk creates a fast and reliable India-Bangladesh cross-border logistics solution using inland waterways The first movement on Maersk’s end-to-end integrated logistics solution on the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route involved the transportation of containerised cargo from Kolkata, India, to a river port near Dhaka, Bangladesh Cont’d. from Pg. 3 By transporting 50 containers (TEUs or Twenty Feet Equivalent Units) from Kolkata in India to a river port near Dhaka in Bangladesh on a bargeon the National Waterways 1 on the India side, Maersk has created a new opportunity for customers to use the faster, more reliable inland waterways solution that connects the two countries. “The Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route has created great trade opportunities for the two countries over the last decades. By advancing into containerised transport on this route, we are expanding the opportunities for importers and exporters from the two countries with a faster, more reliable and safer option for their cargo”, said Vikash Agarwal, Managing Director, Maersk South Asia. The cargo movement on inland waterways or rivers is much more reliable, especially in monsoons, when the turbulent weather can cause delays while transporting goods over the ocean. Moreover, with the ocean network running under capacity pressure, the alternative inland waterways route that is quicker and more reliable has received a warm welcome from shippers. This solution also addresses the bottleneck at the land border between the two countries. Soumyendu Sen Sarma, Director – Finance, Coca-Cola Bangladesh Beverages, said, "The maiden barge voyage has been successfully executed where there has been a significant reduction

of transit time. The delivery schedule of the cargo, which used to be routed through the transhipment hub and then arrive inChittagong and further to the destination, used to be impacted severely with delays. The speed of delivery with the new solution offered by Maersk over inland water ways is going to be extremely beneficial for us." Angshuman Mustafi, Head of Maersk Bangladesh, added, “Our solution to move cargo across the Indo-Bangladesh border has a saving of over 60% in terms of transit time. In addition to the faster mode of transport, we are able to give endto-end visibility to our customers through Daily Status Reports, which give a comparison between the estimated timelines against actual timelines. The negligible variations in these comparisons prove high reliability and have been thoroughly appreciated by our customers.” The Governments of both countries have encouraged trade on the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route for a long time and recently strengthened the customs processes further to enhance the ease of doing business. The Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route is not only a benefit for trade between India and Bangladesh but also extends the connection to landlocked Bhutan. With the option of providing an end-to-end integrated logistics solution, Maersk’s customers can move their cargo from origin to destination using firstmile and last-mile services, including landside transportation by road or rail, customs clearance, warehousing and distribution, supply chain management etc.

ZIM adopts Carrier’s Lynx Fleet solution for Reefer Container HAIFA: ZIM Integrated Shipping Services, a leading International carrier with a global network serving ports in more than 120 countries, has installed over 5,000 units of Carrier Transicold’s Lynx™ Fleet solution onto 40-foot, high-cube refrigerated containers that will ply key trade routes between the Mediterranean, Africa, Asia and the Americas. Carrier Transicold is a part of Carrier Global Corporation (NYSE: CARR), the leading global provider of healthy, safe, sustainable and intelligent building and cold chain solutions. ZIM chose Lynx Fleet to enhance its service offering to customers with a unique telematics solution that provides end-to-end cold chain visibility and reduces both cost and wastage while transporting perishables. In addition to Lynx Fleet, each refrigerated unit will also come with a door sensor that is able to detect when doors are opened and closed as well as how long a door has been left open, protecting the cargo against theft and unwanted temperature excursions. "Delivering perishable food and medicines in prime condition lies at the heart of several of our customers’ businesses. Lynx Fleet enables this more efficiently with the ability to not just manage, but also monitor their refrigerated cargo, every step of the way. With a connected cold chain, our customers can improve their fleet optimization and business operations. Wastage is reduced significantly, with cost savings that are fundamental to our customers’ meeting top and bottom lines,” said Gil Lehmann, ZIM Head of Global Logistics & Equipment.

A key feature subscribed by ZIM is the Carrierexclusive Reefer Health Analytics Module with prognostics and diagnostics, that allows fleet managers to download diagnostic information about their equipment and minimizing the risk of unplanned reefer failures. Along with ease of integration into other 3rd party solutions using the Lynx application programming interface (API). “Lynx Fleet offers key features that ensure the cargo reaches its destination safely with notifications and alarms that are managed by exception. This means the system can alert fleet managers of critical alarms, giving them a global perspective of the situation and allowing them to analyze and act accordingly with timely data driven decision-making,” said Alan Peart, Telematics Manager, Global Container Refrigeration, Carrier Transicold. The Lynx Fleet platform is one of many solutions offered through Carrier’s Healthy, Safe, Sustainable Cold Chain Program to preserve and protect the supply of food, medicine and vaccines.

Vizhinjam Port : First phase to be commissioned by Sep 2023 THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Ports Minister Shri Ahamed Devarkovil said the first phase of the Vizhinjam Port will be commissioned by September next year. After a meeting with Adani Ports CEO Karan Adani, Devarkovil said the Government was expecting the first vessel at Vizhinjam Port in March 2023. Located in Vizhinjam near here, Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd is developing the deep-sea water port as India’s first Mega Trans-Shipment Container Terminal. “All works including the construction of the sea wall is progressing and this is going to be a modern port in Asia. The first phase of the port will be commissioned by September 2023. The local population will be trained for skilled jobs and it is going to create a lot of job opportunities,” Devarkovil said. The Government also discussed the issue of agreement violation with the Adani Group and said the matter will be settled on “good terms”. Adani, who came to Kerala to assess the progress of Vizhinjam Port constr uction, also met and held discussions with Chief Minister Shri Pinarayi Vijayan.

Vijayan had earlier last year said that the State Government was “viewing seriously” a provision in its agreement with the Adani Group that a fine can be imposed if it failed to meet the deadline for executing the Vizhinjam Port project here. The company has said the world-class, future-ready port is the only Transshipment hub in the Indian subcontinent, closest to the International Shipping routes, and is centrally located on the Indian coastline.

Fisheries export from Goa rose by over 50% in 2021-22 New Delhi - There was an over 50% increase in fisheries exports from Goa in 2021-22 compared to the previous year Minister for Fisheries Nilkanth Halarnkar said on fish exports. Goa has exported 36,057 tonne of fish bringing in Rs 730 crore during the financial year 2021-22. In 2020-21, the state exported 16,549 tonne of fish, which brought in a revenue of Rs 435.25 lakh. Majority of the exports — 29,426 tonne — in 2021-22 were to South East Asia. The USA and China were also major buyers with 1,569 tonne shipped to the USA and 2,593 tonne to China. Compared to this, exports to South East Asia stood at 9,055 tonne in 2020-21. However, besides South East Asia,

Goa also saw large orders from the European Union (EU) and the Middle East besides China that year. Frozen fish accounts for the highest quantity of seafood exported to various nations yearly. In 2021-22, 28,104 tonne of frozen fish were exported compared to 7,909 tonne the previous financial year. Other types of seafood exported are shrimps, frozen cuttlefish and frozen squid, among others. While fish exports to the Middle East and the European Union dropped, exports to Japan, South East Asia and the USA increased steadily last year. Fish export details are monitored by the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA). Earlier Goa used to have its own MPEDA office in Panaji.

Major Ports exempted Ro-Pax/Passenger Ferries from paying Port and Vessel related Charges for next 6 Months NEW DELHI: Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) is promoting the Ro-Ro/Ro-Pax/Ferry waterway transportation which has lower emissions compared to other modes of transport for the same amount of cargo. Also, there is a significant time and cost saving compared to the traditional transportation modes. Concurrently traffic congestion on road/railways, noise pollution and the accidents on the roads may also get reduced. Such water-based transportation service is an effective measure to lower the logistics costs, reducing travel time and promotion of Coastal Shipping on several feasible routes. In order to provide some quick respite to this sector from the impact of Global Increase in Price of Fuel, MoPSW has directed all Major Ports to exempt all berth hiring and vessel related charges being currently levied to the Ro-Pax/Passenger Ferries for the next six months with immediate effect. The cost of Marine fuel ‘Low Sulphur High Flash High Speed Diesel’ (LSHFHSD) has increased from Rs.76,000/KL to Rs.1,21,000/KL. Similarly, the cost of ‘Very Low Sulphur

Fuel Oil’(VLSFO) has increased from Rs.40608/KL to Rs.80917/KL. It is to be noted here that in the beginning of FY 2021-22 the cost of marine fuelLSHFHSD used to be 10-15% less than retail diesel-HSD. Hence, effectively the rise is more than 40%. To discuss the Impact of High Marine Fuel Prices and GST on Ferry Operations Union Minister MoPSW Shri Sarbananda Sonowal had recently held meeting with Navneet Mohan Kothari, Joint Secretary (GP Division) Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Niba Ram, Joint C o m m i s s i o n e r, D e p a r t m e n t o f Revenue, Ministry of Finance and other senior officials. In this regard he had also written letters to Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Minister, Ministry of Finance and Corporate Affairs and Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas highlighting this issue and requested them to extend their support for this sector by reducing taxes and price of the Fuel respectively. MoPSW has also requested all the states to lower their rates of VAT over the HSD used by this sector.

Shri Sarbananda Sonowal said, “The rising Fuel cost at international level is now making our local Ro-Pax and Passenger Ferry operations unviable so this exemption of vessel and port related charges by MoPSW will provide the necessary breather to this sector for the next 6 months. We have also requested MoPNG to consider reduction in Fuel prices and Ministry of Finance to lower the associated taxes on it so as to provide the necessary support to this sector in present circumstances.” The Ro-Pax services implemented by Deendayal Port Authority between Ghogha and Hazira under Sagarmala Programme have reduced travel time from 12 hrs. to 4 hrs. This Ro-Pax ferry service have carried over 78,000 vehicles and more than 2.6 lakh passengers since inception. Similarly, Maharashtra Maritime Board initiated Ro-Pax ferry service on Mumbai - Mandwa route. Project resulted in saving of around 3 hours of road travel against 45 minutes by sea route. More than 5.5 Lakh passengers have availed this Ro-Pax service and more than 1 lakh vehicles have been transported.

Engineering exports in Q1 up 11.8%, shipments to China remain muted : EEPC India NEW DELHI: Engineering goods exports from India rose 11.8 per cent year-on-year to US$28.96 billion in the April-June quarter of the current fiscal on the back of robust demand from countries like the US, Germany and Mexico. The demand from China, however, fell sharply during this period slowing down the growth momentum. Downward trend in engineering goods exports to China continued in June with total shipments value declining 55 per cent year-on-year to $232.78 million during this month reflecting the impact of recurring Covid scare and complete shutdowns in key cities. The decline in June exports numbers was steeper than May (52.2 per cent) and April (48.2 per cent) this year. Overall in the first quarter (April-June) of the current financial year, India’s engineering exports to China remained much subdued, registering 51.90 per cent year-onyear decline to US$ 662.90 million. In the first quarter of the previous financial year (2021-22), the value of engineering exports to China had stood at $ 1378.20 million. "China is one of the major export destinations for Indian engineering

goods. Our analysis indicates that fall in demand in China amidst Covid spread fears and the subsequent lockdowns in big trading centres have been a cause of slowing exports from India," said Mahesh Desai, Chairman, EEPC India, in a statement. Desai further added in the statement, that while exports to China fell, the situation was further exacerbated by the imposition of export duty on certain steel products including stainless steel products. As per the industry, the move to impose export duty on certain steel items particularly hurt them at a time when there are ample opportunities for Indian exporters as global supply is affected by the growing UkraineRussia conflict and complete shutdown in certain Chinese cities," he commented. Engineering exports from India were recorded at $9.69 billion during June 2022, which was a 4.2 per cent increase from the exports of US$ 9.30 billion recorded in June 2021. The US continued to be the top importer of India's engineering goods both in the month of June as well as during the quarter. Engineering

exports to the US jumped 28.59 per cent in June 2022 to $1.67 billion as against $1.30 billion in the same month last year. Cumulatively, exports to the US during April-June period of FY23 surged 48.09 per cent to $5.31 billion as compared to $3.59 billion in the corresponding period of FY22. To p f i v e c o u n t r i e s w h i c h witnessed positive growth during June 2022 were the US, Germany, Mexico, UK and Bangladesh. As many as 27 out of 34 engineering panels witnessed positive year- on-year growth in exports during June 2022 vis-a-vis June 2021. Major decline was witnessed in iron and steel, copper and its products, lead and products, industrial machinery for broilers etc. Share of engineering in total merchandise exports was recorded at 23.86 per cent in June 2022 while the share was 24.35 per cent during Apr-June 2022-23. "Overall the global economic situation is still not stable and while newer opportunities are emerging amidst the crisis the industry needs to be prepared in all aspects including pricing, quality and exportability of its production to grab those opportunities," Desai added in his statement.

CBIC considering on Paperless Customs Rules for SEZs NEW DELHI : The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has given a proposal for a completely paperless customs compliance framework for special economic zones (SEZs), said officials, this framework will be in sync with new legislation proposed by the Centre to turn the SEZs into comprehensive economic hubs, with larger participation of States and further ease of compliance to attract investment. A working group of Officers recently submitted a detailed report identifying processes which can be migrated to the ICES (Indian Customs EDI System) or the Indian Customs Electronic Gateway (ICEGATE) system to make the customs process automated and smooth. The CBIC has identified processes, including filing bills of entry, filling shipping bills and riskbased examination of cargo which will

be migrated to the ICES systems. “We did a very comprehensive review of part of the touch points between the customs and SEZ units and the processes involved and how we can automate them,” a senior official said. The reason of the shifting While customs has done a lot of work on ease of doing business, SEZ units have been left out of their benefit. They don’t use the ICES. While the basic filing on SEZ is online, there are a lot of contact points in that procedure. Permissions have to be taken from time to time. SEZs have to apply for renewing them and goods are examined most of the time. Businesses had proposed that all their filings be shifted to the ICES. So, whatever benefits that flow from it to normal importers and exporters will also be available to SEZs. In her budget speech, Finance Minister Smt Nirmala Sitharaman had announced that the SEZ Act will

be replaced with a new legislation that would enable states to become partners in development. She also announced that reforms would be undertaken in customs administration of SEZs to make them fully IT driven and function on the Customs National Portal, with a focus on higher facilitation and with only riskbased checks. This includes integration of ICEGATE with SEZ customs. Experts said reforms in customs administration of these zones will help in further improving ease of doing business, promoting growth and boosting exports. A working group of officials was tasked with looking at the physical touch points between customs and SEZ units, converting them to electronic mode and how they can migrate some of the major processes that the SEZ units have to comply with from the customs point of view to the ICES platform.

Gujarat’s Bedi Port to turn into a Multi-Modal Hub JAMNAGAR: Gujarat’s Bedi Port is about to transform into a Multi-Modal Hub with rail connectivity being put in place, according to the last planning. In response to Officers within the know, discussions are on between few Container dealing with logistics corporations to make use of the railway line adequately. “Containers normally transfer from Jamnagar space to Mumbai or to Mundra. There has additionally been a requirement for a Personal Freight Terminal for Containers alongside

the railway line. It’s anticipated that this can cut back the logistics price for Containers,” a Bedi Port official informed. The primary load of coal was dispatched by a newly laid railway line earlier this month. An official assertion mentioned that this was a first-of-its-kind rail connectivity applied on a Public Personal Partnership mannequin by engineering, procurement, and development (EPC) contracts inside a brief span of eight months. The venture was executed by Gujarat Rail

Infrastructure Improvement Company (G-RIDE), the Gujarat Authorities’ three way partnership with the Indian Railways. It’s anticipated that the rail connectivity to the Bedi Port will improve its capability manifold, easing site visitors from busy ports like Mundra and Kandla. The Bedi Port is on Southern shoreline of Gulf of Kutch whereas the Mundra, and Deendayal Ports are positioned on the Northern shoreline. Each Mundra and Kandla are linked by railways.

Qatar-India bilateral trade jumps 63% year-on-year to $15.03bn in 2021-22 NEW DELHI: Buoyed up by liquefied natural gas supply, Qatar – India bilateral trade jumped 63% yearon-year to $15.03bn in 2021-22, data released by India’s Department of Commerce has shown. Qatar is the largest supplier of LNG to India, accounting for more than 50% of India’s global LNG imports. Besides LNG, India also imports ethylene, propylene, ammonia, urea and polyethylene from Qatar. According to India’s Department of Commerce, the Country imported liquefied natural gas worth $5.9bn from Qatar in 2021-22, representing an 88% growth, year-onyear. India imports natural gas from Qatar under an agreement signed by both sides in 1990 to buy and purchase the LNG amounting to 7.5mn tonne annually for a period of 25 years.

Subsequently, both sides agreed (in December 2015) that Qatar would provide India an additional quantity of the LNG amounting to one million annually. Recently, addressing the India-Qatar Business Forum held on the occasion of his official visit to Qatar along with a high-profile Indian business delegation, India’s VicePresident Venkaiah Naidu said bilateral trade between both countries is currently dominated by the energy sector. “Bilateral trade between India and Qatar has seen remarkable progress. Currently trade is dominated by energy, and our focus now is to expand in diversified trading. “Also, we are seeing an increase in registered Indian businesses in Qatar, with over 15,000 businesses

operating in the country. Over 100 Indian businesses are registered with the Qatar Financial Centre (QFC), and two companies at the Qatar Free Zones,” the Indian Vice-President said. Although, the balance of trade continues to be heavily in Qatar’s favour, there has been a substantial growth in India’s exports to Qatar in the last few years. There has been a substantial increase in Qatar’s imports from India past 2-3 years, facilitated by the opening of direct shipping lines linking Indian ports with Qatar. The increase, according to Embassy of India in Doha, has been in the area of food products, vegetables, pharmaceuticals, steel products and construction materials.

MOL and NYK raises their Profit Estimates TOKYO: Two of the World’s Largest Shipowners NYK and Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) have upped their profit forecasts on the back of the performance of Container Line joint venture Ocean Network Express (ONE). NYK revised its recurring profit forecast for the first half its financial year, 1 April 2022 – 30 September 2022, to JPY720bn ($5.19bn) from JPY440bn previously. Forecast revenues for the period were also upped to JPY1.3trn from JPY1.16trn previously. For the full year ended 31 March 2023 NYK revised its recurring profit forecast JPY1.04trn up from JPY760bn previously, while the revenue forecast increased to JPY2.5trn from JPY2.3trn previously. Giving the reason for the revised forecast NYK said it had previously expected a decline in demand due to Chinese lockdowns and war by Russia in Ukraine, with liner cargo and spot rates expected to decline. However, amid ongoing supply chain disruptions,

we expect the profit of our equity method affiliate Ocean Network Express (ONE) to exceed expectations due to the continuing favorable market conditions resulting from robust shipping demand and other factors,” the company said. It is similar picture for compatriot MOL. For the first half of the year financial year 1 April 2022 – 30 September 2022 it has revised up its net profit forecast to JPY500bn from JPY350bn previously, with revenues for the period upped to JPY770bn from JPY695bn previously. For the full year ended 31 March 2023 it has increased its net profit forecast to JPY710bn from JPY525bn previously, while revenue expectations have increased to JPY1.47trn from JPY1.35trn previously. Explaining the revision MOL said: “At Ocean Network Express (ONE) the company’s equity-method affiliate that operates containership business, cargo movements and spot freight rates are both exceeding the Company’s expectation at the time of the previous announcement on April 28th, 2022.” It also noted “solid” dry bulk and car carrier markets.

International Chamber of Shipping bolsters team to support growth; Also recognised by Great Place to Work® twice LONDON: International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the global trade association for shipowners and operators, continues to enhance and strengthen its team with five appointments over the past three months to support the advancement and development of the organisation. The announcement of ICS’s new appointments comes in conjunction with Great Place to Work recognising ICS as a Best Workplace™ for Women today. This is the second award in recent months with ICS granted a Great Place to Work Certification in May of this year. Sarah Lovell, a former-seafarer, joined ICS’s commercial department as Technical Writer and supports the development of ICS’s industry-recognised publications. Sarah has ten years of experience working shoreside in maritime training and maritime e-learning. In May, Lional Roy Sharon, a former-seafarer, joined as Marine Adviser – Cargo, to provide support to the Marine department for the development and implementation of ICS policy on cargo issues, with particular focus on dry bulk, container and dangerous goods. Katerina Dimitropoulos and Hannah Patmore, ICS’s new Communications Manager and Communications Executive respectively, were also appointed in May to work with the Director of Strategy and Communications on all external and internal communications. Katerina has over 15 years’ experience in maritime communications and Hannah joins the team with a strong background in communications and working for a membership body. Finally, in June, Leyla Pearson was appointed Senior Manager on the organisation’s legal team. Leyla is an

English qualified solicitor with extensive experience in maritime law and working on P&I and Defence cases. Guy Platten, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping, commented: “I am delighted to welcome all our new members to the ICS family. It is great to have them on board and I look forward to working with each of them. At ICS we are in the fortunate position of growing from strength to strength as we continue to push forward with our members on the various challenges and opportunities within our industry such as decarbonisation, digitalisation, seafarer availability, to name a few. This is a very exciting time to be in maritime. “Thank you to the Great Place to Work for recognising our organisation.” Great Place to Work Certification is recognised around the world by employees and employers alike and is the global benchmark for identifying outstanding employee experiences. ICS recently celebrated it’s 100 years and the organisation prides itself on its diverse workforce, offering a great working environment to all its staff members.
