INSIGHTFUL PANEL DISCUSSION
ESG (Environment, Social & Governance) : Delivering a Brighter Future
The Moderator of this in si gh tf ul P an el Discussion was Industry Stalwart cum Veteran Mr . Sh an ta nu Bh ad ka mk ar , Managing Director –ATC Global Logistics Pvt.Ltd.
In his opening remark to set the tone of the discussion he spelled out histhoughtonthethemeofESGverybriefly
He commented: If one is not too sensitive about ESG, which may or may not be a new fad, it may cause a reputational risk. In fact, we all Indians have the tradition of charity for long period of time Equally, we all like to behave well and good because it makes us feel good. One doesn't need to have laws for Governance on it. In fact, Sustainability and frugality havebeenapartoflifeinIndiasinceyore.
Ms. Bhairavi Jani, Executive Director –SCAGroup:Inmyopinion,ESGisnotaboutsatisfaction orfeelinggood.Itisallaboutsolutions Sowehavetostart thinking about solutions. And while thinking about solutions, we initially need to change the way we think. Howmuchcanweeachonecontributetokeepourplanet safe is in our hands for own sustainability. In fact, whatever I am wearing is today is all sustainable fashion – meaning having zero carbon foot print. Doyouallknowwhatareyourcarbonfootprints?
So the first thing is change the way we think and this new thinking should be incorporated in o ur d ai ly l iv es
The reason being, we are fast approaching the 1.5DegreeCelsiusby2027 which is only 4 years from now. The Risks are ma ny b ey on d th at The Infrastructure will start crumbling with very extreme climate events forcing a complete breakdown of society. Therefore ESGistheonlysolutionforthecontinuityofourwayof life as human society going forward and the business whichservesthesesocieties.
Now most important part in this is played by the Leadership. If the Leadership of businesses are not committed to it, we will not make any progress. We won't be able to re-engineer our processes. Lastandnottheleast, alotofpeoplethinkthatESGwill enhance the cost structure but it actually will not. Infactifyoustartre-engineeringtheprocessandifyou start bringing in the measurement of carbon footprint and the measurement of sustainability footprint in yourbusiness–youwillrealisethatitactuallysavesyou a lot more money And in times to come there will a taxes and financial incentive for becoming sustainable organisation or ESG Complaint. So it is better to start early than being on tail end

CK B Gr ou p of Companies: W he n we hear the term ESG, it sounds very daunting, especially for SMEs. But, actually it is not. It is not, because smaller things what we can do in our day-to-day life and in office actually contributes towards this cause. For instance, the lights we use in our office. Changing the normal lights to LED lights is a cost effective solution saving money for organisation in long run. In fact now days, the cost of LEDs has reduced drastically compared to what it was ten years ago. So saving in electricity bills coupled with long life of LEDs are added advantage for anyone. Going paperless is another way or at least making the best use of papers
Disposal of Electronic items we use in our offices in a prudent and responsible manner also goes long way in keeping the environment clean besides ensuring its reuses. Planting trees on special occasion also helps a lot. When our organisation turned 100 years, we planted around 20,000 trees with a vow to plant equal number of trees periodically Making best use of solar energy in our day to day lives is yet another small but effective way helping in that cause.
We have applied most of these small yet effective things in our Group so it is very easy for others to emulate. And frankly it is not a costly affair at all. On the contrary it helps in reducing the costs in the long run and goes a long way in achieving the ESG goals.
BCBA - ESG has been practised in India since time immemorial and comes from the four Vedas. From Customs Broker perspective –it's amazing to see the fraternity so updated as far as the knowledge of Environment Laws are concerned with respect to E-Wastemanagement.TheGovernmentisgoingtobe verystringentinthisaspect.
On Governance – yes, creating a safe working environment, a complaint mind-set for executing our daytodayfunctions, handlingexportsandimportsare verycrucial.WearefollowinguponlotofforeignlawsFCPA (Foreign Corrupt Practices Act) is just one of those. We, as a Customs Brokers, have to ensure that all kinds of compliance are prudently and strictly adheredasrequiredbythelaw
We are leading the lights and ensuring that ethical practices are maintained More importantly learn to say No to your clients and take businesses which are totallycomplaint, ethicalandfollowsthelawproperly.
It all begins from Foreign Trade (Development & Regulation) Act to Customs Act to Environment Laws to BIS to GST and finally to Motor Vehicle Rule and Regulations.WithCustomsBrokersbeinginthecentre ofit, inanodalposition, theyplaysaverycrucialrolein ensuringitscompliance.Infact, wehavetriedtocreate such an environment wherein for our Next Gen, wehavecreatedthegroupswherewecreatemind-sets of compliance and internal governance not only for our ownorganizationbutforentiretradeaswell.

- There are two side of ESG. One is human and other is Bu si ne ss
Fr om h um an pe rs pe ct iv e, I do agree with Ms. Bhairavi that we need to bring in change in the ways we think about planet and be committed toward its betterment in whatever mannerwecan.
From Business perspective, ESG is very crucial for there are two aspects attached to it. Firstly Shipping and Logistics industry accounts for the 60% of carbon emission and secondly we have the highest number of employment. So we have a big social obligation of giving back to the mother earth from where weaccruesomuch.
ESG is basically three pillars of Sustainability. The objective of these three pillars or the “P’s” are Planet, People and Profit. Maximising efficiency from these three “P’s”,theobjectiveofbeingsociallyresponsible should be at forefront. One can understand fromthissentence– “COWGOESCEBO”
COW stands from ENVIRONMENT –In this, C stands for Clean Energy, O replacing with Zero standing for Zero tolerance of any abusive use of any natural resources And W stands for Waste Management in prudentmanner.
GOES stands for SOCIAL – In that, G stands for Gender Equality. O replacing it with Zero standing for zero tolerance of biased treatment for any caste creed and colour in our organisation ES stands Equitable and Sustainable opportunity for any suppliers especiallyinTier2-3cities.
CEBO stands for Governance –in that C stands for Code of Conduct in HealthSafety Environment. EB stands for Efficiency in Business Processes (adoption of technology and automation) and O replacing it with Zero standing for Zero tolerance for any unethical means.
At the end of this insightful and thought provoking Panel Discussion, Mr. George Abrao felicitated the Moderator and Panellists withaSpecialMemento.

Grand & Glorious Event to Remember India Maritime Awards 7th Edition
Keynote Address by Chief Guest Shri Rajiv Jalota, IAS, Chairperson – Mumbai Port Authority
First of all, I would li ke t o th an k th e Daily Shipping Times fo r fe li ci ta ti ng Mumbai Port Authority on its Glorious Journey of150years.
A majority of the audience would have started their or their company's career from Mumbai Port. It is trying to deliver whatever best it can even in these trying times of extreme modernization of shipping and logistics. We know that Indian maritime sector is on a strong trajectory and is ready to assist the Indian economy in achieving lofty goals.
The port and shipping sector is really poised for a big growth. We have started thinking of Mega and Ultra Ports and Govt. has asked us to develop our plans for Amrit Kaal of 2047 which will be soon unveiled by MoPSW. This goes to show that what we are aiming and planning for may also fall short with the magnanimous growth that our country is witnessing.
I would like to showcase few achievements of Indian Shipping sector which wouldn't have been possiblewithoutyourefforts.
In fact the Average Dwell time as per World Bank's Logistics Performance report 2023, India has achieved a level of 3 days as compared to 4 days for countries like UAE and South Africa, 7 days for USA and 10 days for Germany. As far as Turnaround time is concerned, India achieved the mark of 0.9 days which is better than USA having 1.5 days, Australia with 1.7 days, Belgium with 1.3 days, Canada with 2 days, Germany with 1.3 days, UAE with 1.1 days, Singapore with 1 day, Russia with 1.8 days, Malaysia with1day,Irelandwith1.2days,Indonesiawith1.1day andSouthAfrica2.8days.JNPTwascomparedonthis parameter vis-à-vis the best ports of respective countries.
India also moved up to 22nd rank in its Global RankinginitsInternationalShipmentcategory
The Major Ports collectively handled a record breaking 795 million tonnes of cargo in FY 2023 with a 10% growth. This has been achieved with the highest ever output per day of 17,239 tonnes making a 6% increaseascomparedtopreviousyear.
Another significant accomplishment of Major Ports has been the best ever operating ratio of48.54%.
TheFleetofShipshaveexpandedfrom1205in2014
to 1526 in 2023 showcasing India's commitment tostrengthenitsmaritimepresence.
The number of Indian Seafarers has also grown from 1,17,000 in 2014 to a remarkable 2,50,000 in 2022 registeringagrowthof114%injust9years.
The key factor for these achievements have been the thrust given by Government of India and the push from MoPSW. The Sagarmala programme launched in 2015 was the first step in this direction. Numerous steps have been taken since then such as the Ministry's Maritime India Vision 2030 in the year 2021 which showcased the action plan for the decade till 2030. Moreover various arms of the Ministry including the Ports and Shipping vertical are being monitored very closely and they are strategizing their action plans for achieving these decadal targets.
The PM Gati Shakti Programme launched in 2021 is also planning through National Planning Group of 16 Department Secretaries in Government of India in identifying the gaps for improving Logistics
Our Ministries along with other Ministries have identified103projectswheregapfillingneedstobedone
Some of these projects have been completed, some are initiated and some are work in progress. Having said that, over a period of time in 3-4 years all these gaps will be completed and will help improving the logistics performance and efficiencies inbusinesses.
The National Logistics Policy was launched subsequently in the year 2022. The Government has identified a pipeline of 81 PPP projects worth USD 5.18 billion to develop berths and terminals across Major Ports till 2024-25. New Road alignment and Rail projects to manage the freight traffic are also identified by the Ministry.

Moreover the revised model concession agreement 2021 has been hailed hugely by the trade in general and wearegettinggoodresponse.
Indian Maritime sector is also leading the way forward on the Sustainability front. India's first National Centre for Green Port and Shipping towards proving greener solution was also launched November last year This Centre aims to develop a regulatory framework and alternative technology adoption roadmap for green shippingtofosterCarbonNeutrality.
Further, the Harit Sagar guidelines launched in May 2023 envisages ecosystem dynamics in Port Development, Operation & Maintenance while aligning it with working with nature concept and minimizing biotechcomponentofharbourecosystem.
On its 150th Year Anniversary, Mumbai Port Authority has launched the Centre of Excellence for
ESG and Circular economy with the aim to solve the harder problem of ESG implementation and Circularity in Maritime Product Development. The momentum has been sustained through the efforts and active involvement of the Maritime Communities, Port Authorities, State-owned Ports, Private Terminals, Shipping Lines, Container Freight Stations, Freight Forwarders, CustomsBrokers,Stevedore,Barge Operators,Consolidators,DigitalSolutionProvidersand Warehousing & Surface Transport Providers. All these stakeholders have come together to achieve these resultsandareaimingtodohigher.Iinviteall, tocelebrate our collective achievement and laud all the Awardees for beckoningthefutureofIndianMaritimesector.

Logistics major Allcargo walks the talk on its environment commitment
MUMBAI: With disrupted monsoons, rising temperatures, and forest fires becoming increasingly common, there is a growing consensus in the logistics sectorthatclimatechangeneedsto be combatted. Cognizant of their impact on the planet, various organizations are looking to reduce their carbon emissions, especially those emitted during logistics activities.
Among other operational measures to mitigate carbon emissions, a more holistic approach is being adopted such as the planting of trees and clean up drives aimed at reducing plastic waste in the oceans.
Inkeepingwithitspracticeoforganizingclean-updrives across beaches in Mumbai and near JNPT as well, Allcargo Group, which is one of the largest integrated end-to-end logistics service providers in India, recently organized a clean-up drive. Previously, the team had cleaned up Juhu Beach,DadarBeachandCarterRoadBeach.Morerecently, on Saturday, July 15, 2023, a beach clean-up drive was organized at Carter Road, in collaboration with citizen movement, Carter Clean up, and Ek Saath Foundation. 450kgofplasticwastewascollectedforrecycling.
“Change only happens when we act. It’s important to walk the talk, and I believe that when it comes to the environment, it needs to be a collaborative effort. Not just within team members in an organization, but across the ecosystem. For us, at Allcargo, a culture of care is integral for us to not only build an empowering workplace but also
achieve our ESG goals,” says Shashi Kiran Shetty, FounderandChairmanofAllcargoGroup.
Allcargo Group has announced its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2040, after embarking on a structured ESGjourneylastyear.
Its group company, Gati, is already supporting the carbon emission goals of organizations such as IKEA and Schneider Electric. In fact, Gati has also made public its intent to convert its entire pickup and delivery fleet to alternative fuel by 2025, and towards that effect has been investinginelectricvehicles(EV).
Allcargo has also gone and taken a step ahead and announced its head office in Mumbai to be a plastic free zone Regular disposable plastic items such as plastic bottles, cutlery, and bags have been done away with. Gautam Adani meets Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe to discuss about Colombo Port
NEW DELHI : A dani Group Chairman Gautam Adani held a meeting with visiting Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe to discuss multiple projects in the island nation. The discussions included the development of the ColomboPortWest Container Terminal (WCT), the industrialist said. Wickremesinghe came onatwo-dayvisittoIndia.
Adani Ports and Special Economic Zones Ltd (APSEZ), a key subsidiary of the diversified Adani Group, in March 2021 received a Letter of Intent (LOI) from Sri Lankan authorities for the development and operations of WestContainerTerminal(WCT)inColombo.
APSEZ will partner with JohnKeellsHoldingsPLC, Sri Lanka’s largest diversified conglomerate, and with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) as a part of the consortiumawardedthismandate.
TheWCTwillbedevelopedonaBuild, OperateandTransferbasisforaperiodof 35yearsasapublic-privatepartnership.
The project is expected to boost WCT’s container handling capacity and further consolidate Sri Lanka’s locationaladvantageasoneoftheworld’s top strategic nodes along the busiest globaltranshipmentroute.

APSEZ to replicate inorganic strategy for achieving transport utility ambitions
Cont’d. from Pg. 3
The ports unit of the diversified Adani Group said its investments outside India, henceforth, will be in “operational ports and with a limited equity exposure” and in this endeavour itwilltieupwitha“stronglocalpartnerwithfinancialskininthe game”.
By 2030, APSEZ aims to become the world’s largest port company.
The 12 ports/terminals run by APSEZ currently has the capacitytohandle580mtofcargoayear.
“At APSEZ, we will extend our inorganic approach for port acquisition to the acquisition of companies and services in the transport utility space,” the company said in its Annual Report for FY23, noting that there will be “sustained focus on acquisitionsatadeepdiscountvalue”.
“We have extended from Indian ports to investments in Haifa (Israel) and Colombo (container terminal) with the objective to provide a global transport utility solution,” the company said, adding that it is exploring global opportunities with a special focus on Asia, Africa, and other markets.
Karan Adani, Chief Executive Officer, and Whole-Time Director, APSEZ, outlined three “distinctive areas” for deepeningtherobustnessofitsbusinessmodel.
One, APSEZ will develop the industrial hinterland across someofitsportsbyworkingcloselywiththestategovernments. This will catalyse industrial development and assure port volumesforthecompanyforyearstocome, hesaid.
APSEZ has created a land bank of more than 12,000hectarestoattractindustry.
Two, APSEZ will continue to evolve from port intermediation to doorstep delivery with a larger share of a customer’slogisticsspendingleadingtoannuityincomes.
“Our approach is not just ‘If the customer grows, we grow’; our objective is to create a competitive proposition that makes our customers more competitive and grow faster, playing the roleofacatalystandbeneficiary,”KaranAdanirevealed.
Three, APSEZ will gradually build port interests outside India.
“We acquired a stake in Haifa Port and are developing a terminal in Colombo Port. Driven by our risk management strategy, the investments outside India are more likely to be in operational ports and with a limited equity exposure in comparison to the overall size of our balance sheet. We will also work with a strong local partner with financial skin in the game. This is the blueprint by which we grow our cargo volumes from about 340 million tonnes in FY23 to 1 billion tonnes by 2030, while aiming to become the world’s largest port company,”KaranAdanisaid.
Karan, the elder son of tycoon Gautam Adani, referred to the next stage of the company’s evolution.
“If there is one seminal transformation in our existence that has transpired in the last couple of years, it is that we are making a structural extension in our business model: we are graduating from a ports company into a transport utility that provideslogisticsinfrastructureandservices, ensuringservice reliabilityandefficiency,”hesaid.
The Adani scion also expressed his views on ensuring a strong balance sheet, a question that is regularly asked of the company, given the high leverage and its impact on APSEZ’s investmentgraderating.
“We are committed to sustainable business growth and return for our investors. As a result, while we were growing our topline and profits, we also focused on creating a capital structure aligned with the nature of our business. This has allowed us to comfortably service our debt and invest forgrowth,”KaranAdanicontinued.
The company, he said, has now achieved a critical mass of relationshipsandrevenues.
“With enhanced internal accruals, our dependence on borrowingstofundourgrowthcapexhasdeclinedconsiderably. Thisiswellreflectedinournumbers, withgrossdebttonetfixed asset ratio having seen a material decline in the last few years. With most of our sizable capital investments now completed, improvement in our liquidity position will continue, further strengtheningourbalancesheet,”hestated.
APSEZ said its financial structure will revolve around disciplined capital allocation, moderation in capital expenditure, leveraging existing assets, generating higher quantum of free cash flows, and deleveraging the balance sheet. Emphasising its commitmentto“moderatethegestationbetweeninvestmentand returns”, APSEZ said it will make “progressively larger investmentsingrowingandwideningbusiness”.
According to its Vision 2030 blueprint, APSEZ will focus on the Return on Capital Employed (RoCE) accretive initiatives and investments, increase the asset-light proportion of revenues (logistics), diversify existing cargo mix, focus on new growth commodities like LPG/LNG, focus on coastal volume growth, develop assets across the logistics supply value chain, strengthen the sub-continental ports ‘necklace’ (organic / inorganic initiatives) and increase market share of cargo growth.

Govt to extend all export assistance to e-commerce exports : CBIC Chairman
NEW DELHI : The Government is likely to extend all export benefits, including the duty drawback scheme and Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP) facility to e-commerce exports made via the couriermode, theCentralBoardofIndirectTaxes&Customs (CBIC)Chairman,VivekJohri said.
He said this will aid MSME exporters and shared that for e-commerce, (there is) one more initiative is being planned on the customs side, which will help MSME exportersinabigway.
“We are looking at how we can improve the courier portal, which is completely digitised, to enable disbursal of export benefits. We have started working on it, thinking about the best way to do it,” Johri said. According to the foreign trade policy, India’s e-commerce export is estimated to reach
USD200billion–USD300billionby2030.
E-commerce exports are orders placed and processed onlinefromcustomerslocatedinforeigncountries.
Many businesses are increasingly looking at e-commerce exports as an alternative to increase their business. Currently, export of goods using a courier does not get export benefits of RoDTEP, duty drawback and Rebate of State & CentralTaxesandLevies(RoSCTL),hesaid.
RoDTEP is based on the globally accepted principle that taxes and duties should not be exported, and taxes and levies borne on the exported products should be either exempted orremittedtoexporters.
The scheme refunds the embedded central, state and local taxes to exporters. The rebate, implemented in 2021, isissuedasatransferableelectronicscripbyCBIC.

India set to become $6 trillion economy by 2030: Standard Chartered research
MUMBAI : Standard Chartered’s India research team projected that India is set to transform into a $6 trillion economy by 2030. This projection is supported by several factors, includingaremarkableincreaseinpercapitaincome& strong structural growth drivers. Additionally, India’s macro economic stability serves as a significant positive, further cementingitspositionasoneoftheworld’sleadingeconomies.
By 2030, India is poised to secure its position as the world’s third-largest economy, trailing only behind the United States and China. This achievement will mark a significant milestone for the country, further solidifying its role as a major player in theglobaleconomiclandscape.
Rajat Bhattacharya, Senior Investment Strategist at Standard Chartered said that by 2030, the nation is projected to reacharemarkablemilestoneofbeinga$6trillioneconomy.
He said, “Our India research team expects India to be a $6

According to him, one of the standout achievements in India’s economic journey is the expected doubling of per capita income by 2030. As the economy grows and income disparities reduce, a larger portion of the population will experience improved living standards, thus creating a more prosperous andequitablesociety.

Such factors are instrumental in driving consumption, investments, and overall economic development.

Need to improve Export-Import Logistics efficiency & Global competitiveness: Special Secretary (Logistics)
DPIIT deliberates on measures taken by Port Authori es to improve Port Performance
Cont’d. from Pg. 3
The meeting saw participation from Officials from the Department of Commerce (DoC), Central Bureau of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation Limited (NICDC) and twelvePortAuthorities.
Special Secretary (Logistics) emphasized on the need for targeted interventions to improve Export-Import logistics efficiency and global competitiveness. She said that issues related to disparity in dwell time amongst Indian ports must be addressed with the objective of achieving international benchmark at each port and port wise performance on key metrics such as turnaround time, congestion between port and the nearest check post, etc.must be improved. She also suggested standardizing processes and developing SoPs for speedy cargo clearance to improve timeliness and predictability and reduce the average release time of cargo for imports/exports. She encouraged the participants to strive to achieve the NCTF target (48 hours for sea cargo and 24 hours for air cargo) and institutionalize the adoption of LDB report findings.
Some initiatives / projects undertaken by the Port Authorities, includethefollowing:
• Setting up of Centralised Parking Plaza, leading to reductionincontainerholdingchargesfromRs.5000per day to Rs. 100 per day and real-time container tracking usingLDB,(24x7RFIDtagging/de-taggingofroad/rail containers at five container terminal gates) at JawaharlalNehruPort.
• To improve last and first mile connectivity, Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) is constructing (i) four lane road from Varunapuri Junction to Sada junction; (ii) fly over from Baina to Gate No. 9 and (iii) upramp at Baina connecting fourlaneflyoverofNH-17-B.
• Construction of six lane gate complex at Vishakhapatnam container terminal for seamless movement.
• Cochin port & NHAI has undertaken a capacity augmentation project of the existing 2 lane NH 966B to
four lane connecting Willingdon Island to Kundanoor Jn.(8Kms).
• Chennai Port is developing a Multimodal Logistics Park (MMLP) at Mappedu to provide facilities like Warehouse, Cold storage, Open storage for Containers, Automobile parking etc., all under one roof with latest mechanization.
• Chennai Port is developing a Buffer Parking yard in an areaof84,000sq.mtr.
During the meeting it was highlighted that for achieving the country’s Export-Import growth target, port-wise strategic planning for developing adequate handling capacities, infrastructure and logistics facilities, advanced / tech-based systems for tracking 100% Export-Import cargo (containerised and bulk and break-bulk), integration with digital systems of partner countries to be able to trace containers beyond port of call, is of critical importance for futuredevelopment.
SpecialSecretary(Logistics)laidoutthewayahead coveringfollowingactionpoints:
• Ports to develop strategic action plan for improving port performance / productivity to enhance Export-Import logistics efficiency and emerge as global transhipment hubs/preferredtradedestinations,etc.
• Ports to undertake predictive analysis for infrastructure planning to develop adequate handling capacity of increasedExport-Importtradeflowsinfuture.
• Increase adoption of LDB report findings, to analyse trends in dwell time, transit time, congestion, etc. Regular monitoring of data analytics such as those generated under the LDB project, may act as key performance indicators, basis on which the ports can developtheirstrategiesandactionplan.
• Identification of last and first mile gaps to enable efficient hinterland connectivity to be prioritised using PM GatiShakti mechanism. Holistic planning from multimodal connectivity to be undertaken using PMGatiShaktiNationalMasterPlan.
• Facilitate development of digital infrastructure, increase digitisation at ports, efficient service delivery includingroleofCustoms.
Nhava Sheva Distribution Terminal receives mobile harbour crane
Cont’d. from Pg. 3
Following the takeover of both berths from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), NSDT is in the process of upgrading the existing infrastructureandfacilities.
Part of this process, will be the delivery of three mobile harbour cranes. The first crane arrived at the facility on July 17 and will be put to work at the shallow
waterberth,aspersources.
The following two cranes with similar capacities are scheduled for delivery by the end of August; one will join the first crane at the shallow water berth and the other willheadtothecoastalberth.
The introduction of the first mobile harbour crane at the terminal means it is better equipped to handle multipurpose cargoes – including containers, steel, bulk, breakbulkandprojectcargo–withgreaterefficiency.
