Exporters petition Govt on freight increases in recent times impacting Trade NEW DELHI: The Federation of Indian Exporters Organisations (FIEO) has written to the Shipping Ministry citing “monopolistic and unfair practices” by shipping companies which has led to an unprecedented increase in freights for overseas destinations. FIEO President Sharad Kumar Saraf, in a letter to Director General Shipping has said that the shipping lines have again increased their freight to main European ports. It is about 60% increase within a week. Similarly freight to Latin American ports have been increased by 50% and for US
ports are also being increased regularly. “This has an unprecedented increase and a clear indication of monopolistic and unfair practice”, he said. The FIEO President said in the letter that availability of containers has further worsened even from regular ports such as Mundra and JNPT. The situation in inland container depots (ICDs) is still worse, he added. The letter said that while it is true that imports have reduced but shipping lines can easily bring empty containers with negligible cost from Cont’d. Pg. 11 Dubai and other ports.

GENEVA: Export growth declined in India in the third quarter of 2020 relative to the same quarter last year but picked up pace in September, according to a global trade update by the UN. The UNCTAD's new global trade update said that global trade recorded a 5 per cent drop in the third quarter of 2020 compared with the same period last year. This marks an improvement on the 19 per cent year-on-year plunge recorded in the second quarter, and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) expects the frail recovery to continue in the fourth quarter. India's export growth saw a decline of 6.1 per cent in the third quarter of 2020 as compared to third quarter of last year. However India recorded export growth of four per cent in Cont’d.
