BHOPAL: Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari said in Bhopal on Saturday that India is going to have better road infrastructure than the United States, and that the Central Government was determined to achieve this.
Mr Gadkari was speaking after inaugurating a two-day IRC Seminar 2024 on ‘Latest emerging trends and technologies in road and bridge construction’ in Bhopal. He also criticized consultants who create detailed project reports (DPR) for roads, claiming they do so from the comfort of their homes. The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways made these remarks during the opening session of the seminar.
Gadkari recalled that when he was a minister in Maharashtra , he had a quote by former US President John F Kennedy in his office: “American roads are not good because America is rich, but America is rich because American roads are good.”
“In the coming time, Indian road infrastructure will be even better than that of America. We will do it,” Gadkari said. He told the participants of the seminar that they could bring about this change.
Sharing his experience of a helicopter survey of the Bangalore-Chennai highway, Gadkari said he noticed three to four “big towers” coming in the way of the highway’s alignment and was told that it would cost Rs 300400 crore to remove them.
Gadkari said he told an official that the towers could have been avoided during the highway’s construction, thus saving the cost of their removal.
“While agreeing with me, the official said it happened because of those who prepared the DPR (detailed project report) Those who prepare DPR are great people They deserve the ‘Padma’ award… They prepare the DPR on Google by sitting at home,” Gadkari said.
“Such people apologise when mistakes like a wrong alignment are pointed out,” he added.
NEW DELHI : Automobile exports from India increased by 14 percent year-on-year (YoY) in the first six months of the current fiscal year, driven by strong demand for passenger vehicles and two-wheelers.
According to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), total exports during the April-September period reached 2,528,248 units, compared to 2,211,457 units in the same period last year
“Key markets in Latin America and Africa, which had previously slowed down for various reasons, have rebounded, contributing significantly to the increase in exports,” said SIAM President Shailesh Chandra, in response to inquiries about the recovery in vehicle exports.
Several African nations and other regions faced challenges due to currency devaluation, which impacted vehicle shipments as these countries prioritised essential imports.
In FY24, automobile exports declined by 5.5 percent due to monetary crises in various overseas markets,
with total exports falling to 4,500,492 units from 4,761,299 units in FY23.
Passenger vehicle shipments rose by 12 percent yearon-year to 376,679 units in the first half of the current fiscal year, up from 336,754 units in the same quarter last year.
The country’s largest vehicle manufacturer Maruti Suzuki led the segment with exports of 147,063 units, a 12 percent increase from 131,546 units a year earlier
In contrast, Hyundai Motor India exported 84,900 units, down 1 percent from 86,105 units in the previous year
Two-wheeler exports surged by 16 percent year-onyear to 1,959,145 units during the April-September period, compared to 1,685,907 units last year Scooter shipments rose by 19 percent to 314,533 units, while motorcycle exports increased by 16 percent to 1,641,804 units.
Commercial vehicle exports also saw a 12 percent increase, totalling 35,731 units in the first six months of the fiscal year. However, three-wheeler shipments declined by 1 percent to 153,199 units, down from 155,154 units in the April-September period of the previous fiscal year.

MUMBAI: With the construction of new national waterways, the amount of cargo transported by waterways has increased sixfold in the last ten years. According to Crisil, the amount of cargo transported increased from 18.1 million tonnes in FY14 to 132.9 million tonnes in FY24. 200 million tons by FY30 and 500 million tonnes by FY2047 are the goals the government has set. Road transportation currently accounts for 65 percent of freight, followed by rail transportation at 26 percent. The remaining 9 percent is made up of air, pipeline, coastal shipping, and inland waterways.
Over the past ten years, the volume of goods moved by waterways has expanded sixfold due to the construction of new national waterways From 18 1 million tonnes in FY14 to 132.9 million tonnes in FY24, more cargo was moved, according to Crisil.
Rs 5,369.18 crore, the Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP) intends to expand the capacity of National Waterway 1 (NW), which runs 1,390 km from Haldia to Varanasi along the Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly river system.
NEW DELHI : India is on track to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2030, but its rising population poses significant challenges in ensuring basic services and meeting growing investment demands, according to a report by S&P Global Ratings released on Thursday.
The report highlights India’s ambitious economic goals, with the country aiming to expand its economy to $30 trillion by 2047, up from its current size of $3.6 trillion. India is currently the fifth-largest economy globally
“India is set to be the fastest-growing major economy over the next three years, and will rank third globally by 2030,” S&P said The report also pointed to India’s upcoming entry into JP Morgan’s Government Emerging Market Bond Index in 2024, which could unlock substantial government funding and resources in domestic capital markets. However, investors will be seeking improvements in market access and settlement processes, it added.
The report, titled Look Forward Emerging Markets: A Decisive Decade, forecasts a pivotal role for emerging markets, projecting an average GDP growth of 4.06 per
cent for these economies through 2035, compared to just 1.59 per cent for advanced economies. By 2035, emerging markets are expected to drive 65 per cent of global economic growth, with Asia-Pacific countries — India, China, Vietnam, and the Philippines — leading the way.
S&P also noted that by 2035, India will solidify its position as the third-largest economy, with Indonesia and Brazil ranking eighth and ninth, respectively
The report stated that while India has made strides in boosting capital expenditure to improve its fiscal flexibility, it will face mounting challenges as its population continues to grow India is projected to have the world’s largest population by 2035, straining its ability to cover basic services and sustain productivity levels.
As emerging markets chart their economic future, S&P stressed the importance of governments adopting and executing long-term growth strategies. “Setting ambitious growth targets provides a clear roadmap for progress, signaling that policymakers are preparing for the future by addressing vulnerabilities and mobilizing capital,” the report concluded.
NEW DELHI: India has extended a new line of credit amounting to Rs 487 60 crore to the government of Mauritius for financing of a water pipeline replacement project, the Ministry of External Affairs said recently "Thisisthefirst-everrupee-denominatedLineofCredittohave been extended by India for project financing to any country under the Indian Development and Economic Assistance Scheme (IDEAS)," the ministry said in a statement.
The project envisages replacement of nearly 100 km of obsolete water pipeline in Mauritius.
The government of India-supported line of credit will be financed by the State Bank of India at concessional terms.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar made the formal offer to his Mauritian counterpart, Maneesh Gobin, which has now been accepted by the government of Mauritius, it said.

NEW DELHI: With the prospect of better overall crop output due to good monsoon rains this year, the Centre has set a foodgrains production target of 341 million tonnes in the country for the 2024-25 crop year (July-June) This new record level is 9 million tonnes (2 7%)morethantheoutputin2023-24
The primary focus of the target is on pulses among foodgrains and oilseeds in the non-foodgrains basket, as both crops are important for reducing India's import bills.
The foodgrains output target includes record production targets of wheat at 115 million tonnes (MT) and pulses at nearly 30 MT. The target for pulses is 25% higher than the production in 2023-24. Similarly, the target for oilseeds production has been set at nearly 45 MT, which is 12% higher than its production in the previous crop year. However, the target for waterguzzling paddy is reduced by 1 million tonnes, from 137 MT of production in 2023-24to136MTin2024-25
"We will achieve these targets t
n , promoting inter-cropping, increasing acreage, and using high-yielding seed varieties in less fertile zones," said the Union Agriculture Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, after day-long deliberations on various farm-related issues at a national conference on Rabi (winter sown) crops on Saturday
Referring to the significant gap between the final sale price of perishable commodities, such as vegetables, to consumers in cities and what the farmers actually receive in villages, Chouhan said a committee has been constituted to suggest ways to reduce this gap. "For example, if the Centre and the state together bear the cost of transportation, then c o n s u m e r s w i l l g e t c h e a p e r vegetables, and the farmer will also get a better price," he said.
A recent study on vegetables and fruits, conducted by the Reserve Bank of India, shows that farmers are
receiving around just one-third of the price that a consumer pays for the three key vegetables – tomato, onion, and potato – in cities.
Ministers from Uttar Pradesh, U t t a r a k h a n d , a n d A r u n a c h a l Pradesh, along with senior officials of agriculture departments from across the country, brainstormed during the conference on ways and means to achieve the crop output targets for 2024-25 Chouhan assured that the central govt will work collaboratively on every suggestion given by them.
During the consultations, it was underlined that the govt aims to increase the production of oilseeds from 39 MT in 2022-23 to 69 MT in 203031. The target includes increasing the area under cultivation from the existing 29 million hectares to 33 million hectares and improving yield from 1353 kg/ha to 2112 kg/ha by 203031, in order to meet the increasing demand for edible oil in the country and to make India self-reliant.
NEW DELHI : India is pushing for more robust rules of origin to prevent the circumvention of certain products as it prepares standard operating procedures that can guide its foreign trade agreement negotiations. The idea is for the trading partners to enforce rules of origin stringently so that certain products from specific countries do not find their way to India via a different channel. In May, it was reported that India was also planning to upskill negotiators and expand its workforce as it decides on SOP norms, which are expected to include new and emerging issues like gender and
environment.
The SOPs are likely to be presented to the Cabinet for approval, and they come as India is negotiating key FTAs with the UK and EU.
Recently, India’s finance and commerce industry ministers spoke against the European Union’s unilateral decision to impose a Carbon Border
n d deforestation norms, which are likely to increase trade costs.
CBAM imposes tariffs on carbonintensive products like steel and cement. The deforestation regulation r
agricultural products to ensure due diligence so that products are not derived from deforestation.
“A
commercially meaningful agreement; we are confronted with unfair rules of deforestation and CBAM, disrespecting the Paris Agreement,” Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal had said at the formation of the Federation of European Business in India on October 11.
