Major Box Carriers to raise peak-season levy for India-US Trades MUMBAI: After a brief gap that has se e n so m e s i g n s o f f r e i g h t r a t e softening and corrections, Container Lines actively operating on India-US trades are looking to capitalise on expected peak season cargo movements. Mediterranean Shipping Co. (MSC) seems to lead that rate push. The Geneva-based liner, which has three weekly connections out of West India for the US East Coast, has jacked up peak season surcharges it had e a r l i e r planned to apply from 4 July. The PSS levy has been increased to US$2,000 per container, effective 1 August, instead of U$500 per box that was to come into force on 4 July. “In order to maintain the high level of reliability and efficiency of our services to meet the needs of our customers, MSC will apply PSS, effective 1 August handover, ex-India to the US and San Juan, Puerto Rico,” MSC (India) said in a customer advisory.
In addition, MSC has announced a fresh general rate increase (GRI) on the same trade route. From 11 August, it will start charging a GRI of US$1,500 per container for Indian cargo moving to the US and San Juan. “This will be applicable for all containers,” the company said in a separate advisory. That comes on top of a GRI of the same amount MSC implemented from 15 July. Similarly, Hapag-Lloyd will hike India-US rates substantially with a GRI of US$1,600 per TEU and US$2,000 per FEU from 1 August, according to market sources. Other operators offering regular India-US connections are expected to follow suit. Meanwhile, Container xChange, an equipment marketplace provider, in its latest report noted that southern India ports are facing a shortage of containers because of the disruptions
plaguing Sri Lanka’s Colombo Port, a key transshipment hub for the subcontinent region. “There has been a 25% shortage of containers at the Chennai Port, which has made it face a rise in shipping costs,” said Container xChange. “With the trade routes between Asia and the US as well as Asia and Europe opening, the shipping industry in the Country is struggling to keep up with the gap between container demand and supply,” added Container xChange. A company’s analyst explained, “Colombo has always been a priced possession of the Indian maritime trade; however, Sri Lanka’s crippling economic crisis has triggered an altering response in the region’s shipping industry. To put things into perspective, the industry has observed some freight forwarders avoid calling Colombo port. This has put maritime logistics in other parts of the region in a beneficial state.”
Andhra Pradesh formally launches work for development of Ramayampet Port HYDERABAD: The Government of Andhra Pradesh recently formally launched the work for development of Ramayampet Port in Nellore district. Chief Minister Jagan Reddy laid the foundation stone for the project which is expected to be a boon for overall economic development of the state, especially Nellore and Prakasam districts.
The project, which is estimated to cost Rs 11,000 crore, will be completed in three phases. The State Government will be building the port with its own resources to generate more revenue. The Government has set a target of completing first phase at a cost of Rs 3,736 crore in 36 months. Four berths will be developed under
the first phase. The Government expects once completed the port will handle 25 million tonnes a year. The Nellore district administration has acquired 803 acres of land and handed it over to the Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board (APMB). Addressing the evacuees, the Chief Minister said the project would boost economic activity in the State.
Steel exports grow 25% to 13.49 MT in FY22; imports fall 1.68% to 4.67 MT: MoS Steel NEW D E L H I : T h e e x p o r t s o f finished steel from India jumped over 25 per cent to 13.49 million tonne (MT) in 2021-22, Union Minister Faggan Singh Kulaste said recently. During the preceding 2020-21 fiscal, the exports stood at 10.78 MT, the Minister of State for Steel said in the Lok Sabha. The imports fell to 4.67 MT in 2021-22 from 4.75 MT a year ago, a fall of
1.68 per cent, according to Kulaste. “Government has taken various steps to increase the availability of iron ore and make them available at reasonable prices, which, inter-alia, including Mining and Mineral Policy refor ms to enhance production / availability of iron ore,” he said. In the Union Budget 2022-23, the basic customs duty (BCD) on
steel scrap has been exempted up to March 31, 2023. The Government also made modifications in tariffs on raw materials of steel and other steel products vide notification dated May 21, 2022, wherein import duty on anthracite/pulverised coal injection (PCI) coal, coke and semicoke and ferronickel has been reduced to zero.

Depreciating Rupee may boost India’s exports but price-inelastic imports of crude oil and gold would mean limited relief MUMBAI: A depreciating rupee, which briefly hit 80 to the dollar, may boost India’s exports but price-inelastic imports of crude oil and gold would mean limited relief on the trade deficit, which clocked a record $26.2 billion in June. Due to global risk aversion on the back of geo-political tensions and aggressive policy tightening by the Fed, the dollar has appreciated against most currencies, including the rupee. And, with other currencies depreciating, India’s comparative advantage in this respect may be limited. “The weakening of the rupee is good from a trade balance perspective because it promotes exports and discourages imports. But that impact is likely to be very mild because exports depend on global demand, which is slowing, and imports are rigid. The trade imbalance correction impact is very limited unless the currency depreciates very sharply,” CRISIL Chief Economist D K Joshi said. The Monthly Economic Report, which the Finance Ministry brings out and was released earlier this month, said the depreciation, in addition to
elevated global commodity prices, had made price-inelastic imports costlier, making it further difficult to reduce the current account deficit. “The deterioration of CAD could, however, be moderate with an increase in service exports in which India is more globally competitive as compared to merchandise exports,” it added. P r o n a b S e n , Fo r m e r C h i e f Statistician of India, said normally a depreciating rupee would improve “our trade deficit”, because imports would come down. “But now imports are not coming down because of internal income distribution problems, and exports are going to be adversely impacted, because the rupee has appreciated against most other currencies such as the euro, pound and yen,” he said. Madan Sabnavis, Chief Economist at Bank of Baroda, said a continued fall in the rupee would put pressure on imports, resulting in the trade deficit widening. “A fall in commodity prices may offset the impact of currency depreciation, but only to a certain extent,” he added. Sabnavis said as far as gold imports
were concerned, imports might continue to rise irrespective of a hike in import duty imposed by the government, considering the consumer sentiment associated with the purchase of the commodity. India raised its basic import duty on gold to 15 per cent from 10.75 per cent earlier this month, seeking to reduce demand. The country is the world’s second-biggest consumer of the precious metal. A downward trend in the equity market owing to recessionary fears and the outflow of portfolio investment have dampened investor sentiment, raising demand for gold, which is considered a safe investment option. “We are seeing a large trade deficit at this point of time because Indian industry is witnessing challenges in inventory management due to the global supply chain disruption. This has pushed up imports in the last few months. However, the trend is unlikely to continue. Once inventories are managed well, the demand for imported products will go down,” said Ajai Sahai, Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Federation of Indian Export Organisations.
Geopolitical tensions redefine the new normal for Product Tankers : Drewry LONDON: The Russia-Ukraine war and sanctions on Russia’s refined products have created a void in the European market, which is counterbalanced largely by South Asia. The product tanker sector has been gaining from the ongoing geopolitical tensions as a sudden rise in the long-haul trade has boosted freight rates. Drewry expects the shift in trade – from shorthaul to long-haul – to become the ‘new normal’ of refined products shipping with Europe sourcing cargoes from South Asia, the Middle East, and North America in 2022-23. Russia’s 2 mbpd of spare capacity and 0.8 mbpd YoY drop in refinery throughput in 2022 as a result of sanctions supports this trend. Europe was dependent on Russian refined products as the latter contributed 15.9%, aggregating 21.6 million tonnes, to the total European seaborne imports in 2021, with gasoil/diesel comprising 95.4% of the traded volume. On 24 February, the Russia-Ukraine conflict turned into a full-fledged war after which Europe has
been reducing its reliance on Russia. Although there were no clear sanctions immediately, CPP exports from the FSU to Europe weakened by about 1.1 million tonnes during March-April, with almost all the deficit created by gasoil/diesel. Europe counterbalanced Russia’s share by importing around 2.9 million tonnes of CPP from the Middle East the US and Asia. Among these regions, South Asian exports increased by 0.74 million tonnes in March-April, with gasoil/diesel contributing 77.5% to the total share. The Middle East and Southeast Asia followed with a rise in exports by 0.72 million tonnes and 0.58 million tonnes, respectively. Meanwhile, the gasoil/diesel trade shifted significantly as Russia lost a 15.2% YoY in European gasoil imports during MarchApril. Although the US has emerged as the prime supplier of gasoil/diesel to Europe after Russia in 2021, South Asia (mainly India) captured the largest share (5.7%) by supplying maximum replacement cargoes to Europe. South Asia was followed by North America
(the US) and Southeast Asia (Singapore). The Middle East stands at the fourth position with only a 2.5% increase in share. As a result, European buyers have shifted from the short-haul trade (between Russia and Europe) to the long-haul trade by sourcing refined products from South Asia, the Middle East, and North America. We expect this long-haul trade to be the ‘new normal’ for product tanker shipping as Europe intends to shun Russian imports. As supply from North America is unlikely to replace the gasoil/diesel gap created by Russia, we expect South Asia to be the largest contributor, with the Middle East gaining the second largest share in European CPP imports in 2H22. We expect the product tanker shipping market to enjoy strong rates throughout 2022 on the back of increased tonne-mile demand. Although LR and MR tankers are the true beneficiaries of the rise in rates, smaller tankers will also fetch high rates due to the robust demand.
India to import Urad Dal and Tur Dal from Myanmar, Malawi and Mozambique NEW DELHI: India has signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the respective Governments of Myanmar, Malawi and Mozambique for the import of Urad Dal, Tur Dal and Pigeon Peas. Under the MoU with Myanmar, India has agreed to provide an annual quota 2.50,000 MT of Urad Dal and 1,00,000 MT of
Tur Dal from Myanmar through private trade over the next five years. In a similar arrangement, India will import 50,000 MT of Tur Dal per annum from Malawi and 2,00,000 MT Tur Dal per annum from Mozambique over a period of 5 years. A Commerce Ministry circular release to this extent mentioned that all
these said imports will be allowed through Mumbai, Tuticorin, Chennai, K o l k a t a a n d H a z i r a p o r t s o n l y. To participate in the said imports, Indian importers must apply for registration/NOC through the DGFT website, where they must provide the Certificate of Origin as part of the online application.

India’s Passenger vehicle exports see solid growth, jump 26 % in April-June N E W D E L H I : Pa s s e n g e r c a r exports are up by 26 per cent as compared with the April-June period of last fiscal. Data released by SIAM revealed passenger vehicle shipments rose to 1,60,263 units in the April- June period of this fiscal as compared with 1,27,083 units in the same quarter of 2021-22. The auto industry saw disruptions due to the second wave of COVID-19 in the last fiscal. Export of vans declined to 316 units in April-June as compared
with 588 units in the same period of the last fiscal. Maruti Suzuki India NSE 0.38 % was ahead in the exports during the period, followed by Hyundai Motor India and Kia India at the second and third positions, respectively. Maruti NSE 0.38 % exported 68,987 PVs in the period under review, up 53 per cent from 45,056 units in the same period of the previous fiscal year. The carmaker’s top PV export markets include L atin America, ASEAN, Africa, the Middle East and
neighbouring regions while its top five export models comprise Baleno, Dzire, Swift, S-Presso and Brezza. Kia India exported 21,459 units across global markets in the period under review as compared with 12,448 units in the same period of last fiscal year. Nissan Motor India exported 11,419 units, while Volkswagen shipped 7,146 units during the June quarter. Renault and Honda exported 6,658 units and 6,533 units respectively during the period.
FIEO participates in 10th India Trend Fair in Tokyo TOKYO: The 10th India Trend Fair scheduled from July 20-22, 2022 in Tokyo, Japan was inaugurated on July 20 by Mr Mayank Joshi, Deputy Chief of Mission, Indian Embassy. Other dignitaries present were Dr A Sakthivel, President, FIEO, Mr Narendra Goenka, Chairman, AEPC; Mr Gopalakrishnan Palanisamy, Chairman, HEPC; Dr Ajay Sahai, DG & CEO, FIEO. Businessmen from Japan and participating Indian Companies. Mr Mayank Joshi in his welcome address congratulated FIEO, AEPC and HEPC for bringing such a large number of Indian companies & showcasing quality Indian products to Japanese Buyers. He also mentioned that quality Indian products will have high value in the Japanese market. Dr A Sakthivel said that Japan stands as one of the most trusted and dependable partner of India in the North East Asia region. Government from both the sides are immensely committed towards strengthening the bilateral relations for further encouraging trade and investments.
Govt weighs import curb options: Tight vigil on irrational spike in any segment NEW DELHI: The Government has stepped up scrutiny of imports to identif y ir rational spikes in any segment, official and industry sources said, amid indications that “nonessential imports” could be targeted should the situation so warrant. Separately, the Finance Ministry told Parliament that the Government
and the central bank are closely monitoring inflation and “are ready to take appropriate action”. The Government has also tightened its vigil of the global price movements of various commodities and their impact on the Indian economy through trade, minister of state for finance Pankaj Chaudhary said in the Rajya Sabha.
The overall impact of the exchange rate depreciation on domestic prices “depends on the extent of passthrough of international commodity prices to the domestic market”, he added. Retail inflation hit 7.01% in June, having remained above the central bank’s comfort level for a sixth straight month.
National Highway construction likely to be around 32-34 km/day during this scal: Crisil NEW DELHI: India's national highway construction will likely reach only 32-34 km per day during the current financial year as input prices are expected to remain elevated, rating agency Crisil said recently. The rating agency further said it expects the pace of highway construction to pick up post monsoon. India's national highway construction slowed to 28.64 km a day in 2021-22, due to COVID-19 pandemic-
related disruptions and a longer-thanusual monsoon in some parts of the country. The pace of national highway (NH) construction in the country had touched a record 37 km per day in 2020-21. Crisil said National highway projects hit a speed bump in the first quarter of this fiscal, with awarding by the Ministry of Road Tr a n s p o r t a t i o n a n d H i g h w a y s (MoRTH), including the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI),
falling a sharp 42 per cent on-year to 969 km. Construction also slackened, down 14 per cent on-year to 1,966 km, translating to 22 km per day, as a surge in input prices led to developers delaying procurement of materials, it added. According to the report, against this backdrop, awarding would need to scale up significantly in the next nine months to achieve the Ministry's ambitious target of constructing 50 km per day.
CCI issues cease and desist order against Trailer Owner Associations based in Chennai for indulging in anti-competitive practices NEW DELHI: The Competition Commission of India (CCI) issued a final order today against ten Trailer Owner Associations (TOAs) which were found to have contravened the provisions of Section 3(3)(a) and 3(3)(b) read with Section 3(1) of the Competition Act, 2002 (the ‘Act’), which proscribe anticompetitive agreements. These TOAs were alleged to have interfered in the fixation of tariffs for trailers and imposed a restriction upon the members of the National Association of Container Freight Station (NACFS/Informant) and their sister concerns, with regard to plying of their own trailers for movement of
containers. NACFS/Informant alleged that these decisions were taken in trade association meetings, wherein these conditions were made to be agreed upon by the members of the Informant on alleged threats of strikes The Commission observed that none of the TOAs denied having participated in the meetings where such decisions of anti-competitive nature took place, thus, establishing the existence of agreement / understanding / arrangement amongst them under Section 3(3)(a) and (b) of the Act, which are presumed to have an appreciable adverse effect on competition (AAEC). The Commission examined the role of
trade associations and the legitimacy of actions taken by them under the Act, and found that, in the present matter, the TOAs have transgressed their legal contours and facilitated collusive decision making by allowing fixation of prices and restricting the provision of ser vices under their aegis. The Commission noted that the TOAs, many of which did not appear before the Commission during the hearings, were not able to rebut the said presumption. The TOAs were found to have manipulated the market forces and narrowed the scope of competition through the aforesaid collective collusive action.
