Vallarpadam and Beypore port Short Sea Container shipping service ready for launch Motor Vessel Chowgule-8 will arrive first in Beypore through Green Freight Corridor-2 BEYPORE: The short sea container shipping service between the Vallarpadam container terminal and the Beypore port will begin on June 24. Carrying coastal and export-import transshipment containers, Motor Vessel Chowgule-8 owned by Round The Coast Private Limited will be the first to arrive in Beypore through Green Freight Corridor-2. The ship will also deliver containers to the Azhikkal port in Kannur during the trip. By complying with the State government’s shipping policies, the operators have also finalised their weekly service schedule and tariff card. To begin with, there will be two trips a week. The first load is expected to reach the Beypore port on June 25.

The availability of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) facility at Kannur and Bepore is expected to be a boon for many stakeholders in north Kerala to ensure speedy and smooth consignment verification by the Customs authorities. Until very recently, they had been depending on facilities at the Kozhikode international airport. At the Beypore port, the port code for freight service will be INBYP01. Henceforth, the place of discharge in Bill of Lading (the document issued by a carrier to acknowledge receipt of cargo for shipment) will be Beypore, which is a long-awaited moment for exporters and importers who were depending on other ports for container movement.

Exporters and importers from north Kerala have also called for exploring the option of opening a ship repairing unit near Beypore. A floating dry dock and ship repair facility led by Cochin Shipyard Limited could be set up at Beypore for better revenue, they add. There is also a call to explore coastal shipping services for the safe transportation of petroleum products to the north Malabar region. The functionaries of the Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry point out that the State government can either purchase or lease small product carrier ships for the purpose and thereby reduce the movement of fuel products by road.

India receives $64 billion FDI in 2020, fth largest recipient of inows in world: UN NEW DELHI: India received USD 64 billion in Foreign Direct Investment in 2020, the fifth largest recipient of inflows in the world, according to a UN report which said the COVID-19 second wave in the country weighs heavily on the country's overall economic activities but its strong fundamentals

provide "optimism" for the medium term. The World Investment Report 2021 by the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), released Monday, said global FDI flows have been severely hit by the pandemic and they plunged by 35 per cent in 2020 to

USD 1 trillion from USD 1.5 trillion the previous year. Lockdowns caused by COVID-19 around the world slowed down existing investment projects, and prospects of a recession led multinational enterprises (MNEs) to reassess new projects.

Gujarat Govt gives in-principle nod for expansion of Navlakhi Port GANDHINAGAR: The Gujarat government recently gave “in-principle” approval to build a new jetty worth an estimated Rs 192 crore at Navlakhi port which has been in operation since 1939 and lies a little over two kilometers away from the Marine Sanctuary in the Gulf of Kutch. This new jetty will help the port in Morbi district to double its cargo handling capacity to 16-20 million metric tonnes per annum, stated an official release from the government. The approval from the government comes a few days after the National Green Tribunal refused to quash the Environmental Clearance given to Navlakhi port for modernisation. Navlakhi currently exports commodities like salt, while it imports coal and coke, flourspar and pig iron. The expansion plan will involve construction of a 485-meter-long jetty. This will be the sixth jetty at the port. While two jetties are owned by Gujarat Maritime Board, one each belongs to Shreeji Shipping Pvt Ltd, United Shippers Ltd and Jaydeep Associates. Under the Sagarmala project, the Centre will be providing financial aid worth Rs 41.3 crore for building this jetty. This will be first of the five jetties that will be constructed by the Gujarat Maritime Board as part of the expansion project for Navlakhi port. In the first phase costing Rs 192 crore, one jetty will be

constructed, 5.76 hectares of land will be reclaimed, port will be mechanised and capital dredging will be carried out, officials of GMB told The Indian Express. In the second phase (which is yet to be approved by the government) four more jetties costing an estimated Rs 200 crore will be constructed at Navlakhi. The Centre had granted CRZ clearance for the project in November 2020. The expansion of the port includes modernisation of existing port operations by way of mechanisation and augmentation of waterfront facility. The entire operation of port is proposed to be converted in close containment in such a way that coal or dusty cargo will not be handled in open. Coal handled at the port is directly transported to thermal plants in Gujarat, Rajasthan and UP. The port annually handles 2.5 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) of salt, 4.5 MMTPA of coal and 1 MMPTA of ceramics, the government release added. The expansion plan of the port also includes reclamation of 5.76 hectares that have significant mangrove cover. The project will involve capital dredging of 2.76 lakh cubic meter which will help the new jetty have a draft of four meters. Apart from the capital dredging, maintenance dredging of 28,000 cubic meter will have to be carried out annually.

Nitin Gadkari: ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ is to increase exports & nd India’s import option NEW DELHI: The Minister for Road Transport & Highways and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Shri Nitin Gadkari said that the sentiment behind creating an ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ is to increase our exports and to find out Indian option for whatever we are importing. Addressing at event on ‘Vision India’, Shri Gadkari said that under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, the government has set a vision for India to become a five trillion dollar economy in next five years. The Minister said that with the philosophy of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ and proactive initiatives, the Government is aiming to boost investment, economic growth and generate more employment. Shri Gadkari said that with flexible and allinclusive time bound decision-making process, transparent and development-led ecosystem would contribute towards happy, prosperous, strong and an Aatmanirbhar Bharat. The Minister advocated the use of ethanol and bio-fuel as the cheaper and better option of petrol and diesel. He said that the diversification of agriculture towards energy and power is very

important which will result in reduction in pollution and yield good prices to the farmers and create an agro-based industry all over the country. Shri Gadkari advocated organic farming and said that India should export its farm products across the world. The Minister said that encouraging ethanol and bio-fuel will, in turn, boost the Indian economy as there is rice surplus, corn surplus, sugar surplus and wheat surplus in the country. He pointed out that the Government is working towards doubling the farmers’ income, boosting Make in India, upgrading science & technology and innovation and facilitating ease of doing business. The Minister said that within 8 to 10 days, it will be made mandatory for the automobile industry to make flex engines. There will be choice with the consumer whether he wants 100% petrol or 100% ethanol / bio-fuel. He said that ethanol is a better fuel than petrol as it is import substitute, cost effective, pollution-free and indigenous. Shri Gadkari said that MSME sector has set a target to create five crore more jobs in next five years.

NHAI to buy Sindhi Dry Port, convert it into Logistic Park: Nitin Gadkari NAGPUR: Union minister Nitin Gadkari has announced that National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) will purchase the in Wardha district and develop it into a logistic park that will offer export and import facilities. Speaking during the inauguration of a flyover at Nandgaon in Hinganghat, Wardha, the minister said he had initiated the project when he had the charge of shipping, but of late, its work was moving at a snail’s pace.\ The government had planned to develop two such dry ports in Wardha and Jalna to facilitate export-import trades and improve connectivity with Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust in Mumbai from the hinterlands of Vidarbha and Marathwada. Spread over 346 acres, the Sindhi port is expected to provide direct employment to over a thousand people

Calling on the local leaders to help farmers, the city MP assured them to provide a train comprising six cold storage container bogies to Hinganghat farmers for selling their produce, not only across the country but also abroad. “We send 20 containers to Dubai and seven to Canada from Wardha containing vegetables and other produce of farmers. If Agriculture Market Produce Committee (APMC) and local leaders could take a lead from here, the products of farmers here could reach places. The technology is changing today and its proper use could provide longevity to perishable goods. At my home, we use onions that are about a year old, but remain fresh due to use of individually quick-frozen (IQF) technology,” he said.

Adani Ports to collect new charge for delay after completing train loading MUNDRA: Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) will levy a new charge from July 1 for delay in removal of train after completing operations. The charge has been set at Rs5,000 plus GST per hour, APSEZ said in a trade notice to customers. “Trains being operated at Adani container terminal rail head are experiencing delay in getting vacated after train operation completion and removal given from our end to the respective container train operator (CTO),” Douglas Charles Smith, Chief Executive Ofcer, Mundra and Tuna ports, APSEZ, Mundra, wrote in a June 17 trade notice. The delays are creating a cascading effect on the trains

which are waiting to be placed on the tracks. The new charge will be levied to mitigate the delay and speedup the post train operation work, the operator said. The delay will be calculated after 01 hr of completion of train operation and sending the documents through email. Idling/delay charges shall be applicable, when the discharge is complete and the confirmed backloading plan is not shared by CTO. The removal shall be given after 1 hour of train discharge completion if backloading plan is not shared, or on arrival of underframe train and 1 hour post placement time and no backloading plan is shared, it added. The new charge will be billed to the respective Container Train Operator (CTO) and collected by the terminal rail head.

Govt set to raise funding for exports scheme, clear dues Cont’d. from Pg. 3

It had also re-deployed large parts to the production-linked incentive (PIL) schemes, which will entail an allocation of close to Rs 2 lakh crore over five years. The move follows extensive consultation between the finance and commerce ministries, with the entire mechanism being finalised at the highest level. Proposals for the have also been moved and a decision is expected too, official sources told. The twin moves will offer muchneeded relief to exporters, especially those in the services space, who have been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic. Even for goods exporters, refund of levies has not come through, despite the gover nment announcing the new scheme RoDTEP from April to ensure

that goods shipped from India do not become uncompetitive due to state and central levies. In the absence of payments, exporters have been forced to borrow or dip into their already depleted reserves to meet capital requirements, which has added to their costs. While the finance ministry was not seeing anything wrong with the steps it had taken in the Budget, the entire problem was due to lower allocation made by it. Due to lower budget, the scheme was getting restricted to only a few segments. The enhancement of the allocation will now enable the commerce and revenue departments to refund duties paid by all exporters. “The coverage of RoDTEP will be available to all the 11,000 tariff lines for which rates will be

notified,” said an officer. A mechanism is also being proposed for units in special economic zones (SEZs), with the details to be worked out in the coming months. A panel comprising experts as well as industry representatives will look into the mechanism. There is, however, no clarity yet on some of the dues from the erstwhile Merchandise Exports from India Scheme (MEIS) that was abandoned as the US dragged India to the WTO, arguing that it was not compliant with global rules. In fact, several other schemes have been wound up too, making RoDTEP the primary tool, with the focus now shrinking to refunding levies, instead of providing incentives.

Handicraft Exports from UP, Haryana and Rajasthan NEW DELHI: Differences in countries dealing with and recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic have had a positive impact on one segment of the Indian economy. Export of certain goods based on handicrafts has picked up, with the US and Europe clawing back to normal. When most industries in India are gasping in the second wave, shipping of the decorative and ornamental has started afresh. Carpet exporters of Uttar Pradesh and Har yana, gems and jeweller y merchants in Rajasthan and those involved with embroidery and wooden lacquerware in Punjab have seen figures rise after a slump last year. Textile exporters have also seen things improve, in parts like Rajasthan’s Bhilwara. Most of their buyers are in the US and Europe, where the pandemic was at its peak last year. Canada, Australia and the UA E a r e a l s o a m o n g t h e p o p u l a r destinations of these products. The situation demanded exporters to plan differently. A majority of these businesses suffered deep losses in the domestic market since the virus spread and lockdown became the norm. This prompted some of these ventures to take the virtual route and display their ware to customers abroad. With restrictions gradually easing in those countries, these online expos became successful. Export of handmade carpets from UP and Haryana went up by 17.76 per cent in

2020-21, from Rs 11,799 crore in 2019-2020 to Rs 13,824 crore. After shipping out coloured gemstones worth Rs 127.61 crore last year, exporters in Jaipur witnessed this figure rise to Rs 460.35 crore already in 2021. Bhilwara’s textile enterprise has also recorded a growth, while Punjab’s handicrafts have staved off losses, clocking exports worth around Rs 3 crore in both years. The Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC, set up by the Union ministry of textiles) held four virtual international fairs, showcasing the most innovative products. “It not only helped exports stay afloat after the jitters in April-May, 2020, but also helped eliminate the high cost of organising international carpet expos physically in India or abroad,” says outgoing CEPC president and UP-based carpet exporter Siddhnath Singh. This business is based primarily in Mirzapur and Bhadohi in eastern UP and Panipat in Haryana. According to Singh, over 50 per cent of their market is in the US, 25-28 per cent in European nations and 20-22 per cent in South America, Asia Pacific and the Middle East. “By June last year, the debilitating effect of the pandemic started declining, as the Panipat-based carpet units started meeting pending overseas orders. Though data of exports for this April and May is not yet tabulated, the industry is confident it has not been as badly hit in the second wave as in the first. The virtual

platform has given us an opportunity,” Singh asserts. Things are literally glittering in Rajasthan’s handicraft industry. Exports have picked up in a big way in recent months and they continue to provide jobs. In 2020, gems and jewellery exports amounted to Rs 372.95 crore. From March to May this year, the figure has risen to Rs 1,396.24 crore. “Demand from the foreign markets is growing again. Besides that, with no national lockdown this year, the units in Jaipur, Mumbai and Surat could keep functioning. In April alone, the country exported gems and jewellery worth Rs 25,226.11 crore,” informs Sabyasachi Roy, Director of Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council. Handicraft exporters also confirmed that figures are going up. Between March and May in 2020, 4,277 containers worth Rs 410 crore were exported. In the same period this year, they have shipped 7,643 containers valued at Rs 730 crore from Jodhpur’s handicraft sector. Ismail Khan, handicraft exporter in Jodhpur, says markets were open in the UK, other parts of Europe and the US, resulting in increased demand this year. “I am happy that hundreds of artisans were able to feed their families during the tough times.” Although Punjab’s handicraft dealers have seen sales plunge domestically, exports remaining the same has given them fresh hope.

China-Europe freight-train service records over 40,000 trips BEIJING: The China-Europe freight-train service has recorded more than 40,000 trips, with the transported goods valued at over 200 billion U.S. dollars, official data shows. Since the first China-Europe freight train left southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality in March 2011, the service has reached more than 160 cities in 22 European countries, according to a work conference of the office of the leading group on advancing Belt and

Road development. The intercontinental rail route is considered a significant part of the Belt and Road Initiative to boost trade between China and countries participating in the initiative. When the COVID -19 pandemic impeded sea and air transport, the freight-train service emerged as a reliable choice in global logistics thanks to its safety, stability and efficiency. Around 94,000 tonnes of anti-

pandemic supplies was sent through the route, which helped to stabilize the global industrial and supply chains, according to the office. The conference called for further efforts to step up transportation capacity and enhance transportation efficiency, stressing the strengthening of international cooperation. The trains made 12,406 trips last year, up 50 percent year on year, the data shows.

Govt open to more measures to boost Economy: CEA NEW DELHI: The Government is open to coming out with more measures to boost the economy which has been hit by the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, says Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) K V Subramanian. He, however, added that the demand for a fresh stimulus package has to be

considered against the backdrop of a host of initiatives taken by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her budget for 2021-22 presented in February. The Chief Economic Advisor was responding to a suggestion made by some industry bodies that the government needed to come out with a

Rs 3 lakh crore stimulus package to boost the economy which was badly hit by the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic in April-May. According to an assessment by the Reserve Bank, the second wave has cost the nation about Rs 2 lakh crore in terms of output lost.

Demand rises for Smart Reefer Containers Globally LONDON: The global Covid-19 crisis has highlighted the importance of refrigerated container logistics to keep vital supplies of food and medicines, including vaccines, flowing around the world as nations locked down. While temperature-controlled goods have indeed kept flowing, the pandemic triggered an ongoing cascade of disr uptions to the bigger container shipping system that so many perishable producers, exporters, importers and supply chains now rely on. That includes delayed, diverted and rolled shipments, port congestion, landside logjams and shortages and displacement of empty reefer containers due to a clogged global maritime transport pipeline. Coming hard on the heels of the Suez Canal blockage, the latest disruption with a global ripple effect whose final impact is not yet known is the severe slowdown at the Port of Yantian due to a Covid-19 outbreak. Major reefer container car riers including, Maersk, CMA CGM and Ocean Network Express (ONE) have warned of delays to inbound reefer shipments and (sometimes unannounced) diversions to other southern China ports. As industry analyst Lars Jensen of Vespucci Maritime observed recently, disruptions are an everyday reality for container logistics but because the global system now has so many chokepoints and backlogs there is scant buffer to deal with them. As a result, the impact of even small incidents is greatly magnified. “Even before the pandemic, reefer container availability posed a continual challenge,” said Rachael White, Managing Director of Cool Logistics Resources. “Reefer equipment repositioning to meet both everyday flows and peak seasonal demand from major growing areas has always been a delicate dance. Over the last years that has been exacerbated by slower fleet replenishment and growth following the 2008/9 financial crisis – remembering that reefer containers, plugs and power are a significant investment for ocean carriers, leasing companies, ports and landside logistics providers – along with growth and underlying shifts in world food trade. That includes increased appetite from China and other Asian nations, leading to longer cold chains with less reefer box turns and different patterns of equipment demand, supply and repositioning.” Several major container lines have recently announced substantial orders for new reefer equipment, including Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd, Ocean Network Express (ONE) and Zim. But with reduced global availability of empty containers of all types (up to 20% less due to recent events, estimated UNCTAD recently), the best will in the world cannot make up that shortfall any time soon, especially when it comes to sophisticated reefer containers prices.

These are thorny issues to work out for the global container trade as a whole and most definitely for the reefer container sector. As Maersk said in its most recent Global Logistics Pulse briefing, “logistics have been turned upside down. The knockon effects are widespread and global trade is lacking the resilience needed to cater for the added strain. The capacity to handle this level of disruption is sparse and to successfully navigate in this new environment there’s an urgent need for doing business in new ways, being agile, and having visibility across the end-to-end supply chain.” Real-time visibility and remote control are key drivers for today’s accelerated digitalisation in reefer container operations and the broader cold chain, not only because of the huge global vaccine distribution challenge but perhaps even more so to manage supply chain delays and disruptions impacting cross-border flows of food and other perishables. “Implementation of Internet of Things (IoT) telematics that allow reefer containers and cargoes to be remotely located and monitored around the world was already happening before the pandemic but adoption has escalated in the last year, including more factory installations on newbuild units,” said Al Tama, Vice P resident and General Manager, Container and Port Solutions, ORBCOMM at the recent Containerised Vaccine Logistics seminar staged by Cool Logistics and Container News. Reefer containers equipped with IoT devices and sensors provide a wealth of real-time and historical data for carriers and shippers, along with the ability to actively adjust temperature and other key parameters from afar to prevent cargo spoilage. To do this, the IoT device interfaces with the reefer container unit’s microprocessor controller for a 2-way ‘conversation’. The integration of a new generation of wireless sensors will also capture insightful data that augments the information from the microcontroller, according to Tama, who noted, “Many of these sensors are geared at providing information concerning the condition of cargo to optimise integrity and minimise tampering—temperature, humidity, light, shock and vibration.” Sensors are also being used on reefer and dry containers to detect unauthorised door openings, protecting high value cargo from theft and tampering and alerting users in real-time to incidents. One major area of focus in recent times has been improving real-time visibility and remote monitoring of reefer containers onboard vessels with wireless IoT. The goal is to close the visibility black holes at sea, make onboard reefer monitoring safer for seafarers, and allow shoreside staff to re mo te ly mo nito r co nditio ns. This

January, Carrier Transicold and Wireless Maritime Services (WMS) announced they were collaborating to make Carrier’s Tr i p L I N K ( T M ) r e e f e r c o n t a i n e r monitoring platform available via the WMS IoT at Sea programme. G l o b e Tr a c k e r a l s o a n n o u n c e d enhancements to its Sense Vessel solution in partnership with WMS and Druid S o f t w a r e . P r e v i o u s l y, O R B C O M M announced that it had expanded its portfolio of on-board VesselConnect IoT systems to include LoRa WAN™ (LoRa) technology in partnership with Net Feasa. One of the clear gains made from smart IoT enabled reefer operations is the emergence of the virtual P re Trip Inspection (PTI), replacing a manual inspection. This has already yielded operational efficiencies, including conducting vPTIs on-board ships so that offloaded reefer containers can get back into service more quickly. A Reefer pre-trip inspection is an extensive check of both the container and the machinery prior to transportation. It ensures that the reefer machinery is running properly at correct settings (for its goods) and that the container is clean and undamaged. The efforts of the Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) and the Container Owners Association (COA) to develop standards for interoperable reefer container IoT communication technology and data have been a big boost for adoption, according to ORBCOMM’s Al Tama. The latest standard from the COA’s Reefer Telematics Working group – a collaboration of reefer equipment manufacturers and telematics Providers – was published this June. COA’s new open standard Reefer Data Classification Scheme, supported by an open-source Unified Data Model (UDM), is designed to enable the exchange of information on refrigerated containers in a uniform way, independent of the model and manufacturer. “By using the standard data model provided in this document, shipping lines and other reefer container operators who have mixed fleets of different reefer machinery will benefit from the convenience of accessing relevant data, without the complexity of accessing them with different formats and means,” claimed COA, which went on to add, “This is relevant as it is estimated around 70% of all data integration activities today are spent validating, structuring, organizing and cleaning data, a cumbersome burden that the UDM model eliminates.“ With more ocean carriers sharing smart reefer data with their shipper customers, and in some cases generating new revenue as a result, the drive towards interoperability and open interfaces is clearly an important development.

MOL establishes the "MOL Charitable Trust" in Mauritius TOKYO: Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Takeshi Hashimoto) has established the "MOL Charitable Trust" (the Trust) in the Republic of Mauritius as part of its benevolent and philanthropic actions to support activities for the public benefits of Mauritius and its people to address the impacts of the oil spill from a bulk carrier the MV Wakashio that had been chartered from a subsidiary of Nagashiki Shipping Co., Ltd (shipowner). In cooperation with the shipowner and relevant authorities, MOL has been working to restore the natural environment of Mauritius and contribute to local communities, with the assistance of experts and organizations specialised in the restoration and protection of the environment (Note 1). The newly established Trust is part of a total of 800 million yen fund announced in September 2020 by MOL. The Tr ust is being established with a fund of approximately 300 million yen settled by MOL as settlor ahead of the MOL Japanese Foundation, currently under preparation. The Trust will be locally based and managed to

ensure quick support when required. In addition, the Trust will incorporate not only projects related to the restoration of the natural environment, but also provide support to local communities in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Mauritian Government's National Priority Areas. The Trust will contribute to strengthen the presence of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean Rim and foster relationships between the People of Mauritius and Japan. In addition, through the Japanese Foundation which is to be established in the near future, MOL will conduct further support activities on a dual basis with the Trust. The MOL Charitable Trust is managed by a Committee of Enforcers. This committee includes eminent persons in Mauritius, in order to provide far reaching and fair support in line with the purpose of the Trust. Funding of the Japanese Foundation will originate from MOL and will also be open to receiving donations from other corporations and individuals. Moreover, the service will allow TOKYO: Marubeni Corporation (Marubeni), NYK Line, and Transnational Diversified Group (TDG) have agreed on Marubeni’s acquisition of a stake in MarCoPay Inc., an electronic money platform business founded by NYK Line and TDG. Nowadays, on oceangoing vessels around the world, approximately 80 billion yen (700 million USD) is speculated to be kept as cash on board because salary payments to crew members have traditionally occurred in cash. However, cash on board vessels leads to additional workloads and costs, such as fees to transport cash to the vessels and remittance fees when seafarers send the received cash to their families. Moreover, seafarers spend long periods of time on vessels in a specialized working environment, so the need for health management support and convenient online services between sea and land has existed. Also, in countries such as the Philippines, where most crew members call home, seafarers are often not fully accorded the best credit conditions when applying for loans and can have difficulty obtaining proper insurance services that suit their labor environment and lifestyle. This is said to be due to the term contracts of the seafarers, even though they generally earn much more than average in their home countries. Thus, cost reduction for cash handling by vessels and improvement of the working and living environment of seafarers have been issues within the shipping industry for some time. MarCoPay Inc. has developed an electronic money platform named “MarCoPay” that has been designed to enable digital salary receipt, remittances, cash withdrawals, loan applications, and insurance and investment product purchases through a smartphone application. MarCoPay minimizes cash handling costs and accounting workloads

crew members at sea to remit money to their home countries even during unstable internet connections at sea. Further, MarCoPay Inc. has started a loan service for Philippine seafarers. MarCoPay’s service menu to seafarers and their families will expand through this collaboration with Marubenirelated businesses, such as those in finance, medical services, and telecommunications fields, among others. Marubeni, together with NYK Line and TDG, aims to widely disseminate the MarCoPay platform and further enhance the convenience of it. All three stakeholders — Marubeni, NYK Line, and TDG — seek to provide high value-added service through the MarCoPay business and contribute to the improvement of the working and living environment of seafarers and their families by establishing and developing an economic network of seafarers.
