In the landlord model, private players take over the operational aspects, while the port authority acts as a regulator and landlord.
Speaking at CII Annual Business Summit 2024, Ports, Shipping a n d Wa t e r w a y s S e c r e t a r y TK Ramachandran said Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) has become the first Major Port of the country to become 100 per cent landlord port, having all berths being operated on PPP model.

T h e b i g g e s t i n c r e a s e w a s registered at Kattupalli port with a yearly increase of 91 per cent, as per the report by the financial information and analytics firm.
Oceanside port productivity (portmoves-per-hour) generally improved among ports the firm surveyed. In India, Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai registered a significant 36 per cent year-on-year improvement in performance in the first quarter of 2024.
Berth productivity at the large Indian ports was generally stable year-on-year. Among medium-sized
ports, Pipavav port in Gujarat was the highest performer, delivering 125 berth-moves-per-hour (BMPH) during the quarter
Further, the report noted India managed to reduce import dwell time for containers (-22 per cent year-onyear at larger ports; -41 per cent yearon-year at medium ports) at a greater rate than counterparts in Southeast Asia and China (-2.9 per cent year-onyear at larger ports; +1.6 per cent year-on-year at medium ports).
However, export dwell time for containers worsened at Indian ports. Median export dwell time rose to more than four days from 3.5 days the
previous year period.
The dwell time for transshipment almost halved at large Indian ports while at the same time increased by m o r e t h a n 4 5 p e r c e n t a t counterparts in Southeast Asia and China, the S&P Global Market Intelligence said
Further, the analysis found that Jawaharlal Nehru Port and Mundra Port both saw a significant decrease in vessel waiting time.
Medium-sized Indian ports also experienced lower year-on-year vessel waiting times, with major improvements at Pipavav, Chennai, and Krishnapatnam.
AHMEDABAD: An Indian spice trade group recently said that spice exports could drop by 40% after two m a j o r b r a n d s w e r e h i t w i t h contamination allegations over the use of a pesticide the group considers safe but others say causes cancer in the event of long-term exposure.
India is the world’s biggest exporter, consumer and producer of spices, and its spice exports came to $4 billion in the year from April 2022 to March 2023 But the Federation of Indian Spice Stakeholders (FISS) said the industry has already seen buyers put some export orders on hold amid international scrutiny of two popular Indian brands – MDH and Everest The exports regulator, the Spices Board, did notrespondtoarequestforcomment.
Hong Kong last month suspended sales of three MDH spice blends and one from Everest citing high levels of the pesticide ethylene oxide, or ETO – a cancer risk in the event of long exposure. The two companies both say their products, hugely popular in India and exported globally, are safe for consumption. “If other countries also start taking a similar stand, our spices exports could fall by 40%,” said Mr Tejus Gandhi, the Secretary of FISS, which represents 600 spice makers and exporters around the country. Already, Britain’s food regulator has applied extra checks for all spice imports from India and the U.S, New Zealand and Australia are looking into the matter.
“Many countries are questioning Lot of spices exporters have orders They have been halted,” Gandhi said at a press briefing in Ahmedabad city in western India. ETO can be used as a pesticide to help prevent microbial contamination. While some nations allow a small presence of ETO in spices, many completely prohibit it The U S Environmental Protection Agency says regular exposure to ETO over many years raises the risk of cancers including non-Hodgkin lymphoma, myeloma and lymphocytic leukemia, as well as breast cancer in women. India’s Spices Board last month said the country has “stringent protocols and guidelines for ETO residue” and it will strictly monitorconsignments going abroad.
VISAKHAPATNAM: As the supply of coking coal and essential raw material disrupted in Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) following the strike at Adani Gangavaram Port Private Limited (AGPL), the steel plant has been facing unprecedented challenges Operation at the AGPL came to a grinding halt as workersstagedanagitationfromApril12.
The disruption significantly affected RINL’s ability to procure essential raw material, coking coal and limestone, which are crucial for the VSP ’s production process However, the supply of essential raw material from APGL resumed from Friday Keeping the challenges in view, CMD of RINL Atul Bhatt thanked the
stakeholders, who played a crucial role in resolving the transportation crisis of raw materialfromtheAGPLtotheRINL He mentioned the collective efforts of the stakeholders and their timely intervention were instrumental for ensuring continuity of the plant’s operations and resolving the raw material supply crisis.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi called the Chabahar Port Pact between India and Iran an important milestone. He said that the trilateral treaty between India, Iran and Afghanistan was signed to provide much-needed connectivity to Afghanistan.
In an interview, PM Modi was quoted saying that, India will work to promote regional connectivity, trade and commerce through not just the Chabahar Port but also through the International North South Transport Corridor as also the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor
In 2016, during my visit to Iran, the trilateral agreement between India, Iran and Afghanistan was signed, in order to provide the much-needed connectivity to Afghanistan,” said PM Modi, adding that his Government

“An Indian company had taken over the operations a few years ago and since then it has been used by India to provide ‘humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan including wheat, pulses, pesticides, medical supplies’,” said the PM.
“The recent signing of the longterm agreement for the development of Chabahar Port is an important milestone,” he said. “India will work for ensuring that our efforts promote regional connectivity, trade and commerce, including to and from the landlocked Afghanistan and the Central Asia region This is also embedded in our vision to promote connectivity including through the International North South Transport Corridor, as also the India-Middle
East -Europe Economic Corridor,” PM Modi added.
“In this era of globalisation, connectivity plays an important role. It is our endeavour to provide connectivity especially to those countries which are landlocked I have always found deep interest among the leaders of the Central Asian countries to use this port for getting access to the sea and connecting to India,” said PM Modi.

NEW DELHI: The one-time amnesty scheme for exporters who failed to meet obligations that they had agreed upon while availing dutyfree imports of inputs and machinery for production has netted the government Rs 852 crore, a senior official has said.
As many as 6,705 applications were filed by the exporters to take advantage of the scheme, which enabled them to reduce their paybacks to the Government for not meeting export obligations under the Advanced Authorisation (AA) and
Export Promotion Capital Goods (EPCG) Schemes. Officials said the money collected under the scheme could go up further.
In the normal course, if an exporter fails to meet the export obligations, the duty saved has to be paid back to the Government If repayment exceeds the time limit prescribed under the schemes, interest is also charged.
I n t h e a m n e s t y s c h e m e announced in the Foreign Trade Policy released on March 31 last year, the interest was capped at 100% of
exempted duties under the scheme. However, no interest was payable on the portion of Additional Customs Duty and Special Additional Customs Duty This brought down the interest burden on exporters, as many cases of non-fulfillment of export obligations have been pending for a long time. By November 30, exporters had to file that they will participate in amnesty scheme and the deadline of payment of customs duty and interest was March 31 The last amnesty scheme for exporters was announced back in 2011-12.

NEW DELHI: India will soon start negotiations for concluding a free trade agreement (FTA) with Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) that will give the country a smooth access to markets of five resource-rich postSoviet states.
Indian exporters from sectors such as engineering goods, electronics and agriculture will get a boost from the agreement, experts on the EAEU said.
The EAEU comprises Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
The FTA will get a lift from India's management of the Chabahar Port in Iran, giving exporters a connectivity corridor to Eurasia.
The FTA will provide greater market access to Indian goods and services in the region, which has not been a priority for Indian exporters so far
It will also help India, a member of SCO, in balancing China’s inroads in Eurasia Russia is India’s biggest trading partner among the EAEU member states with trade touching $65 billion in 2023-24.
E x t e r n a l A f f a i r s M i n i s t e r S Jaishankar recently said India's rise in trade with Russia should not be seen as a "temporary phenomenon" as more economic opportunities are emerging

Corporation (EMC) is turning to its inhouse container manufacturer for more containers as major container makers have their slots full.
The Taiwanese mainline operator announced on 14 May that it is ordering 17,500 containers from Evergreen Heavy Industrial Corp (Malaysia), for a total price of US$65.17 million.
Linerlytica’s data shows that major container manufacturers’ slots are fully booked until the end of July Management at Dong Fang Container, the world’s second-largest container maker, has stated that its factories are booked until August.
Its data shows that just before EMC’s announcement, the Taiwanese carrier had just over 100,000 TEU of
containers on order in 2024 to date. MSC has the most container orders, at just under 500,000 TEUs.
The equipment shortage seen during the Covid-19 pandemic is recurring as the supply of ships tightens amid the Red Sea crisis.
EMC’s container orders coincide with its 1Q 2024 results that were announced the same day Its net profit was nearly trebled from the year-ago period, at TW$17.4 billion (US$544.6 million).
Alphaliner noted that EMC’s Q1 24 earnings were among the best in the post-pandemic era.
The French consultancy noted, “The improvement in earnings has been particularly strong for mid-tier carriers. EMC operates nearly 70% of its capacity on the East-West trades, where head haul rates out of China have risen above the market average.”
