PMO floats HAM model for development of Vadhavan Port Project in Maharashtra

MUMBAI: The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has suggested adopting the hybrid-annuity model (HAM) for execution of The Vadhavan Port project in Maharashtra.

The Rs 76,220-crore mega container port project, a joint venture between Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority and Maharashtra Maritime Board, initially planned under the landlord model, now awaits Cabinet clearance on the PMO’s suggestion.

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, in February 2020, had approved setting up Vadhavan Port under the Sagarmala Programme.

Situated in the environmentally sensitive Dahanu taluka within Maharashtra’s Palghar district, Vadhavan Port boasts a natural draft of approximately 20 metres near the shore.

Additionally, the construction of the greenfield port at Vadhavan is crucial to manage overflow traffic due to limitations on expansion at Nhava Sheva, where JNPT is situated.

Drewry: Port Throughput Index down 2% in January

Container Port Throughput Indices are a series of calendar adjusted volume growth/decline indices based on monthly throughput data for a sample of over 340 ports worldwide, representing over 80% of global volumes The base point for the indices is January 2019 = 100.

Drewry has developed a nowcasting model that uses vessel capacity and terminal duration data (derived from our proprietary AIS model) to make short-term predictions of port throughput.

• Drewry’s Global Container Port Throughput index fell 2.0% MoM in January 2024 to reach 110.3 points, 9.8% ahead of the January 2023 level. According to Drewry’s Nowcast model, the Global Port Throughput Index is anticipated to have fallen 3.5% MoM in February but 5.5% higher than in February 2023.

• The Greater China Container Port Throughput Index fell slightly by 1 9% MoM in January 2024 to

119.8 points, up 18.7% YoY Please note that there is now a greater time lag in the publication of Chinese port throughput data, and as such previous month volumes are now being projected at a national level based on a smaller sample of corporate data. Drewry’s Nowcasting Model indicates a 11.3% MoM decline in the Container Port Throughput Index to 106.2 points in February, 7.5% above February 2024, noting that in 2023 the Chinese New Year fell on 22 January whereas in 2024 it was on 10 February

• The North American Container Port Throughput Index remained mostly stable in January 2024, easing slightly by 0.2% MoM. The Vessel Call Index rose 2.5% MoM in February 2024 to 99.0 points, 2.5% above the February 2023 level Drewry’s Nowcasting Model projects a 3.2% increase in the North American Throughput Index for February 2024.

• T h e E u r o p e a n C o n t a i n e r Po r t Throughput Index dropped 1 4% MoM in J a n u a r y 2 0 2 4 t o 9 6 1 p o i n t s , 2.4% ahead of January 2023.With the Suez transit no longer the prime Asia-Europe routing, East Mediterranean hub ports have lost volumes Piraeus saw throughput fall 12.7% YoY and 25.8% MoM in January 2024. Exports growth at 20-month high amid Red Sea crisis; impact on export renewals key monitorable, says CRISIL

This has been the fastest since June 2022 after a growth of 3.1 per cent in January With this, the exports grew for the third consecutive month, indicating sustained momentum.

The near-term challenge to India’s exports due to the Red Sea crisis has been limited so far, however, the key monitorable going forward will be how the crisis will impact prices when export contracts are renewed, said CRISIL. Barring this hiccup, CRISIL stated, the recent healthy export momentum and forecasts by major multilateral organisations of better trade growth t h i s y e a r o v e r l a s t y e a r a r e encouraging. “The current account remains in a safe zone with robust services trade surplus and healthy remittances,” it said.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, exports grew 5.4 per cent on-month afterdeclining2 6percentinJanuary

Many core export items such as pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, organic and inorganic chemicals and readymade garments recorded a surge in February, said CRISIL. Chemical exports picked up pace swiftly, growing 33 per cent on-year after recording mild growth of 0.3 per cent on-year in January and remaining in negative territory for the previous 15 consecutive months.

On the whole, core (non-oil, non-gold) exports grew 17.2 per cent on-year in February compared with 2.5 per cent in January, registering the highest growth since April 2022. That said, exports of gems and jewellery remained in negative territory for the second consecutive month.

Merchandise exports down 3.45%, merchandise imports down 5.32% in April-February period

Cumulatively, India’s merchandise exports fell 3 45 per cent on-year to $394.99 billion in the April-February period this fiscal compared with

The merchandise trade deficit widened to $18.71 billion in February from $16.57 billion a year ago and $16.46 billion the previous month.

Cumulatively, merchandise imports contracted 5 32 per cent o n - y e a r t o $ 6 2 0 . 1 9 b i l l i o n i n April-February this fiscal, helping narrow the merchandise trade deficit to $225.2 billion from $245.94 billion in the corresponding period the previous fiscal.

I n d i a ’ s s e r v i c e s e x p o r t s continued to grow, rising 10.8 per cent on-year in January 2024, while imports saw mild hardening to 0.1 per cent. As a result, the services trade surplus rose to $16.17 billion in January from $13.17 billion a year ago and $15 98 billion the previous month

India’s export performance rebounded from August 2023 through February 2024, registering average growth of 2.7 per cent compared with a 13 per cent decline in the first four months of this fiscal (April-July 2023). E x p o r t s a n d i m p o r t s d a t a highlights:

Exports of major items such as d r u g s a n d p h a r m a c e u t i c a l s (22.2 per cent on-year in February vs 6.8 per cent in January), engineering goods (15.9 per cent), organic and inorganic chemicals (33 per cent) and readymade garments (4.9 per cent) d i s p l a y e d r o

(5.1 per cent vs 6.6 per cent) showed a slight slowdown. Meanwhile, exports of gems and jewellery (-11.3 per cent vs -1.3 per cent) remained in the red.

Exports of labour-intensive sectors such as carpets (14.6 per cent v 9.4 per cent), cotton, yarn, fabrics, madeups, handloom products and others (17.1 per cent), handicrafts (87 per cent v -16.6 per cent) improved further compared with the previous month. Ceramic products and glassware (9.8 per cent), plastic and linoleum (22.1 per cent) and readymade garments (4.9 per cent) also exhibited positive growth.

Agricultural exports have gained momentum, driven by fruits and vegetables, oil seeds, rice, spices and tobacco. However, exports of cashew and oil meals slowed.

Meanwhile, oil imports turned positive, increasing 0.1 per cent onyear to $16.89 billion in February from $15.53 billion in January in line with an increase in Brent crude oil prices to $83 8 per barrel from $80 2 per barrel the previous month

Imports of gold (133.8 per cent v 1 7 3 6 p e r c e n t ) a n d s i l v e r (13234.4 per cent v 323.5 per cent) increased on-year. While growth in silver imports was supported by a significantly low base, the same cannot be said about gold, which faced an unfavourable base, stated CRISIL. Pearl, precious and semi-precious stones showed weak growth.

India's coal import rises to 212 million tonnes in April-January period

N E W D E L H I : T h e c o u n t r y registered a marginal rise of 1.65 per cent in coal imports to 212.24 Million Tonnes (MT) in the April-January period of the ongoing fiscal, over the year-ago period. India's coal import was 208.78 MT in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, according to data compiled by Mjunction Services Ltd.

of the previous fiscal.

"The demand for imported coal in India has weakened in recent weeks. We expect this trend to continue in M a r c h i n v i e w o f t h e a m p l e availability of domestic coal at mine pitheads and thermal power plants," Mjunction Services MD and CEO Vinaya Varma said.

According to the provisional data of the government, the country's coal production in the April-January period rose to 784.11 MT over 698.99 MT during the same period in 2022-23.

AEPC : Ramp up in capacities to help achieve $40 bn exports

NEW DELHI: Steps such as significant ramp up in production capacities, and skilling of workforce will help achieve $40 billion garment exports target by 2030, AEPC said on Tuesday

Apparel Export Promotion Council of India (AEPC) Chairman Sudhir Sekhri said skilled workers like tailors and quality checkers are still not sufficient as during the peak season

they go to their native villages thereby creating shortage.

“Our target to reach $40 billion of RMG (readymade garments) export by 2030 can be a reality and my duty is to take every possible step to reach this target,” Sekhri said. ‘‘We need to ramp up our capacities as the export houses in India are still unable to handle core/basic products which are required in huge quantities,”. he said.

“We are creating about 150,000 skilled workers every year but it is still not enough To attain the growth that we are targeting, we need to empower our workforce with skills,” he added

Further the council said the Apparel Training and Design Centre has recently organised distribution of degrees to its students of Bachelor of Vocation (BVoc) degree course.

India prepares to start new LNG Import Terminal as demand rises

NEW DELHI: India is looking to purchase the inaugural shipment for its latest liquefied natural gas terminal, as the nation aims to rapidly increase consumption of the fuel this decade.

Surge in 3PL demand propels growth in warehousing spaces : CRBE

MUMBAI: The demand for Grade A and Grade B warehousing spaces in India is experiencing a significant uptick, largely fuelled by third-party logistics (3PL) players.

According to CBRE’s latest report released in January, the leasing activity in industrial and logistics spaces surged to 38.8 million square feet in 2023 from 36 million square feet in the previous year. Anshuman Magazine, Chairman & CEO, India, Southeast Asia, Middle East & Africa, CBRE, commented, “As we envision the future of the industrial and logistics sector, this robust growth is a testament to the sector’s resilience despite global economic challenges.”

The leasing momentum across the top eight cities remained strong in 2023, with 3PL players holding a substantial 45% share, as per CBRE. Additionally, a recent report by JLL highlighted a remarkable 15% year-on-year increase in the total stock of Grade A and B spaces across eight major cities, with 3PL logistics emerging as the largest segment in warehousing space demand.

The burgeoning demand for 3PL services can be attributed to several factors. Businesses increasingly prefer outsourcing their logistics and

warehousing functions to focus on their core activities. Furthermore, the appeal of 3PL providers lies in their ability to offer flexible warehousing solutions that can adapt to market fluctuations, allowing businesses to meet seasonal demands without committing to yearround storage infrastructure.

Despite the dominance of 3PL in the warehousing space, there is a notable l o w p e n e t r a t i o n o f G r a d e A warehousing facilities. Aloke Bhuniya, C E O a t A s c e n d a s F i r s t s p a c e Development, emphasized, “Today, penetration in Grade A warehouses is less than 20%–25%. One of the factors behind this is that 3PL penetration in India is very low. Once 3PL players convince their clients to move into Grade A warehouses, it will be difficult for them to go back.”

Consolidation among 3PL players towards larger, single warehouses is streamlining operations and enhancing liquidity for both providers and developers. However, developers may face pricing pressure from 3PL companies operating on thin margins, potentially leading to downward rental rate pressures.

Norway will invest half of $100 billion under EFTA : Norwegian envoy May-Elin Stener

OSLO: Switzerland being the largest player is likely to contribute more than half of the $100 billion free trade pact India recently signed with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), while Norway will bring in the rest, with Iceland and Liechtenstein contributing as well, Norwegian Ambassador to India, May-Elin Stener, told.

India signed a four-nation trade p a c t w i t h E F T A c o u n t r i e s : Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein, on March 10, aiming to

attract $100 billion and to create one million jobs in 15 years in exchange for tariff concessions for their pharma, chemical and minerals

“The interest in India is high a m o n g N o r w e g i a n c o m p a n i e s . Some 130 Norwegian companies are already in India with Mumbai and Bengaluru housing most of them Through this new EFTA pact, we are expecting many new Nor wegian entrants and investments into the Indian markets,” Ms. Stener said.

She said bilateral interactions are already underway between India and Norway, but the pact has now created a framework for such collaborations

“We are exploring working together in diverse businesses like fisheries, agriculture, maritime, blue economy and energy transition technologies Norway is a big global maritime player and we are a superpower in the oil and gas front and so we have a lot of expertise in these areas which we can share,” Ms. Stener explained.
