India’s First Port Based SEZ - JNPT SEZ - is Now Operational 5 units have started their construction activities and amongst them 2 units have recently started their operations in SEZ successfully. All three units are granted operational status by Development Commissioner, SEEPZ, SEZ NAVI MUMBAI: JNPT, the premier container port in the country is developing a multi-product Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in its owned free hold land of 277 hectares at Navi Mumbai. The multi-product port based SEZ aims to boost exports by enabling port-led industrialization under Sagarmala initiative of M i n i s t r y o f S h i p p i n g . The foundation stone of the project w a s l a i d b y the Honorable P r i m e M i n i s t e r, Shri Narendra Modi in August 2014.
JNPT reached yet another mile stone in development of SEZ by becoming the first of its kind operational Port based multi-product SEZ. Two units in JNPT SEZ namely, OWS LLP and Krish Food Industry (India) have completed their first phase of operational activity and are declared operational units by Development Commissioner, SEEPZ, SEZ. The efforts rendered by these units during the challenging times of Covid-19 are commendable. Apart from the first 2 companies, 3 more companies are likely to commence their construction activities soon.
Mr. Sanjay Sethi, IAS, Chairman, JNPT cutting the cake
Commenting on the progress of SEZ, Mr. Sanjay Sethi, IAS, Chairman, JNPT said, “For JNPT, this is truly a great occasion as JNPT becomes the first port where Port-led economic development is evolving successfully. JNPT is confident of attracting leading global companies for making India a manufacturing hub as the infrastructure development underway in JNPT SEZ is as per the international benchmark. The potential units investment and the employment generation will give a boost to the entire entire eco-system around JNPT region. I thank Development Commissioner, SEEPZ, Ministry of Commerce, GoI for their timely support and guidance in developing and operationalizing the first Port based multiproduct SEZ and I thank all the stakeholders too for the timely support in making this possible.” All together there are 19 MSME and 1 Free Trade Warehousing Zone (FTWZ) co-developer who have been allotted the plots in JNPT SEZ till date. It is expected that all the remaining units will follow the suit and become operational in the near future. Over the last months, JNPT has been continuously working towards successful operationalization of the SEZ. The SEZ once fully occupied is expected to generate Rs 4,000 Crores of investments and create 57,000 jobs in the SEZ. JNPT is leaving no stone unturned to ensure world class infrastructure and facilities to units in the SEZ. JNPT enjoys the Special Planning Authority (SPA) status for the SEZ project. Also, the Electricity distribution license from MERC, GoM is provided to JNPT SEZ. All the clearances for setting up of SEZ are in place. This will further help in reducing setup time and cost for the units being setup in JNPT SEZ and will further enhance the “Ease of Doing Business”.

ONE announces new vessel self-inspection challenges SINGAPORE: Ocean Network Express (ONE) has launched a new self-inspection challenge for vessels, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, replacing their previous Vessel Quality Standard (VQS) inspections which are currently suspended.
This comes as ONE initiated a Marine Safety and Quality Campaign to reiterate marine navigation safety practices. The self-inspection challenge will be undertaken by the ships’ crew, as part of the ONE Safety and Quality Campaign
2020. This campaign will run from July through to December to maintain the safety and service quality of the company’s fleet during the virus crisis period. As a charterer, ONE has carried out onboard Vessel Quality Standard (VQS) inspections since the start of its operations in April 2018. All vessels under ONE’s operation are encouraged to identify and make good any potential defects using a ONE self-checklist, according to an announcement. A VQS Excellent Co-operation award will be given to the most co-operative and motivated vessels. ONE said it intends to “raise safety awareness in collaboration with its business partners, further extending their efforts in safe and efficient operations,” through the Marine Safety and Quality Campaign.

Indian MSMEs on Amazon global selling programme cross $2 billion in exports Cont’d. from Pg. 3
“The GSP helps take homegrown businesses global and provides an avenue for MSMEs to build global brands. The programme is witnessing momentous growth. It took three years for the programme to hit exports of $1 billion and now it has grown 100 per cent to hit the next $1 billion in less than 18 months," he added. Indian SMEs and brands using Amazon global selling export worldwide has now crossed $2 billion in cumulative exports, he noted. Agarwal said the programme has helped MSMEs sustain their exports business and in tur n, supported hundreds of families amid the Covid-19 pandemic that has led to lockdowns and disruptions in supply chains globally. "Exports will continue to play a critical role in this revival. GSP is helping local go global. This is more important than ever for our small
businesses, and for the nation, as it recovers from unprecedented time. We will continue to empower Indian MSMEs to realise their potential and make exports easy," he said. Agar wal added that Amazon remains committed to its pledge to digitise 10 million MSMEs, enable one million incremental jobs and drive $10 billion in e-commerce exports by 2020. Nitin Gadkari, Union Road Transport and MSME Minister, said the MSME sector contributes about 30 per cent of the growth of the Country and about 48 per cent of India's exports. Stating that exports is a key priority for the government, he said the focus is on supporting Indian MSMEs to be more successful in the international markets and increasing their share of exports to 60 per cent. He suggested that products exported through GSP can be classified as micro, small and medium and
making separate categories for handloom, handicrafts and agro MSMEs. "The product quality (of MSMEs) is very good but they need packaging, good designing," he said adding that this will help in further enhancing popularity of Indian products in international markets. The Minister said products like honey, mushroom and furniture have huge potential. He added that Amazon - with its global expertise - can help Indian MSMEs with insights on product designing and marketing, making it a win-win for both the e-commerce giant and Indian companies. Amazon also released its 'Exports Digest 2020' on Monday. It said the number of exporters on Amazon has grown to over 60,000 with sellers joining from metros as well as tier II and III cities.
India’s food exports up 27% since March NEW DELHI: The country recorded $0.79 billion trade surplus in June against $15.28 billion deficit during the same period of 2019. Despite economic turbulence due to Covid-19, India’s overall food exports since March have increased 27 per cent. According to the Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI), the average growth of 27 per cent during the lockdown and the unlock period came on the back of high demand for foodbased items. “The food sector has shown 27 per cent growth. The major markets that have responded well are the US and Canada,” TPCI Chairman Mohit Singla said at the Indo -Canadian virtual “buyer-seller meet (BSM) on food & beverages.” He said exports in June against year-ago month had declined by only 4 per cent. “We exported almost Rs 166,000
crore merchandise. It shows the Indian market has bounced back and the international market is responding well to Indian exports,” he said. Recently, official data showed India emerged as a net exporter in June. The country recorded $0.79 billion trade surplus in June against $15.28 billion deficit during the same period of 2019. On the Indo-Canadian food trade, Singla said, “Canada can be an important market for the Indian F&B industry as it has a large population (approx 2.4 million) of Indian diaspora. Outreach to the mainstream market is the biggest challenge for the Indian F&B industry.” With the support of fellow buyers and the High Commission we would be able to perform better, he added. India’s High Commissioner to Canada Ajay Bisaria said, “The Mission was part of a number of business conferences, but it’s the first virtual
BSM during the lockdown. It’s a positive sign that we are looking beyond the pandemic to go into a recovery phase for business.” The demand for India’s ethnic and organic products was rising, he added. “Canada is projecting the worst economic contraction since the Great Depression of about 6.8 per cent in 2020 instead of 8 per cent or so projected by the IMF for Canada,” he said and hoped, all economies, including India and Canada, would have a ‘V’ shaped rather than ‘W’ or ‘U’ shaped recovery.” He said the strategic India-Canada economic partnership was moving to the next level in business and political terms and often the business led the political side. “The merchandise trade has risen 24 per cent during the pandemic. The investment from Canada to India has grown from $5 billion to $60 billion in the last 5-6 years,” he said.
Indian spices exports increases by 34% in June NEW DELHI: Increase in spices exports during June is in contrast to a decline of 12.41 per cent in the country’s overall merchandise export basket during this period, said an ASSOCHAM study. Add spices to your mix of healthy food to improve immunity and ward off coronavirus, suggest health experts across the globe. Thanks to their advice, spices exports from India have gone up by 23 per cent in dollar terms to $359 million (Rs 2,721 crore) in June 2020, compared to $292 million (Rs 2,030 crore) in the same month last year. Thanks to the forex advantages, the growth is 34 per cent in rupee terms, says industr y body A SSOCHAM,
quoting trade data. According to data from Spices Board of India, India had exported 857,400 tonnes of spices in April-December 2019, as compared to 825,340 tonnes during the corresponding period in 2018, a growth of just 4 per cent. In value terms, India exported spices worth Rs 15,882.20 crore in the same period, a growth of 8 per cent from Rs 14,665.77 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year. During 2018-19, a total of 1,100,250 tonnes of spices and spice products worth Rs 19,505.81 crore ($2,805.50 million) were exported from India, as against 1,028,060 tonnes valued at Rs 17,980.16 crore ($2,789.35 million) in
2017-18, registering an increase of 7 per cent in volume, 8 per cent in rupee terms, and 6 per cent in dollar terms. Traditionally, pepper, cardamom, ginger, turmeric, coriander, cumin, celery, fennel, fenugreek, nutmeg, spice oils and oleoresins, and mint products are the major spices shipped abroad. Biggest buyers of Indian spices in 2018-19 were Vietnam (123,673 tonnes), China (93,649 tonnes) and the US (82,204 tonnes). Other major destinations were Bangladesh, Malaysia, UAE, Indonesia, Thailand, the UK and Iran. The US was the largest importer of pepper at around 5,465.19 tonnes in 2018-19, followed by the UK with 1,375.34 tonnes.

Iran on verge of activating massive new Russia- India trade corridor through Suez Canal TEHRAN: The idea for the creation of a major transport corridor through Iran goes back the early 2000s, when Moscow, Tehran and New Delhi signed an agreement on a 7,500 km route to transport goods from India and Iran to Russia and Europe using a combination of maritime, overland and railway infrastructure. Earlier this month, the Chabahar Free Trade Zone Organisation’s Director General Abdul Rahim Kordi outlined the benefits of the formation of a trade route between Mumbai, St. Petersburg and Hamburg via Iran’s southeastern
Chabahar Port, with the corridor running northwest through Iran to Bandar-e Anzali along the Caspian coast, through the Caspian Sea to Russia’s Astrakhan region, and then northward toward Europe. Speaking to Iranian media, Kordi outlined a series of benefits from the route, ranging from faster delivery times to its potential role in further strengthening Iran’s relations with its neighbours. He added that in some cases, the transport corridor would be able to replace Egypt’s Suez Canal in terms of overall efficiency. Iran has committed significant
resources to the project, Kordi said, allocating hundreds of million euros for the development of railway infrastructure, with Chabahar Port itself currently in the process of increasing its cargo capacity from 2.5 million tons to 8.5 million tons annually. New Delhi had committed the equivalent of about $14 million to the port’s development for the years 2020-2021. Calling Iran the “terminal of the world”, Kordi stressed that Chabahar, Iran’s sole oceanic port, has the potential connect the world both east-to-west and north-to-south.
Agri based industries seeking Govt incentive to boost exports PUNE: Agriculture-based industries like yarn, textiles, dairy, sugar and soyabean processing are seeking government incentives to increase exports, as domestic demand has remained subdued and they are expecting a bumper kharif production. A good start to the monsoon season — average rainfall till July 17 was 10% above normal — and sowing that was 21% more than a year earlier till July 15 has boosted expectations on the kharif harvest. Meanwhile, demand has been low, causing worries of a glut in the market and its likely impact on prices. Tha t c o u l d h u r t t h e f a r m - b a s e d economy that has so far been largely insulated from the effect of the pandemic, say industry insiders.
Crop-based industries want the government to start preparing to deal with a surplus availability of some commodities. "Our cotton sowing is ahead of the previous year, while the carry-forward stock of cotton is also expected to be higher. If we get export incentives, we can increase yarn export by at least 40% to 50%," South Indian Mills Association chairman Ashwin Chandran said. Wi t h d e c l i n i n g d o m e s t i c a n d international demand for apparel, especially fashion apparel, the textile industry is concerned about competition from other Asian nations to retain its traditional export markets. Chandran said China, the largest market for Indian yarn, and a few other
markets have given duty-free access to several countries such as Bangladesh. I n t h e d a i r y i n d u s t r y, w i t h institutional consumption of milk and milk products like cheese, butter and khoya having fallen substantially due to the pandemic, dairies have been converting excess milk into milk powder. While farmers have launched agitations to get a fair price for milk, dairy units are seeking incentives to export the milk powder they have been accumulating. The soyabean processing industry is keen to increase exports of soya meal and other products, as Indian soyabean commands a premium in the world market since it is not genetically modified.
States can fix minimum freight rates for trucks, says Road Ministry NEW DELHI: Following a demand from transport associations, the Road Transport and Highways Ministry has reminded various States that it is possible for them to fix a minimum floor price for cargo movement. This is provided for in the Motor Vehicle Act. Simply put, freight rate is the amount charged by truck drivers for moving goods between two different places. States are free to fix a range of minimum and maximum rate for freight and several forms of passenger transport, the Road Transport Ministry has reiterated in
a letter to States on July 10. The Road transport Ministry issued this guidance citing representation from transport associations that asked the Ministry to fix the minimum freight rates in view of “economic turbulence, weak demand and other factors”, according to an advisory. Even though a section of transporters had sought government intervention to fix a minimum freight rate limit, the move will create a rift in other sections of transporters, say transport experts. SP Singh, Senior Fellow, Indian Foundation of Transport Research and
Training (IFTRT) told that, this is difficult to implement as it interferes in the concept of letting the market forces operate in a free and fair manner. Government intervention in fixing freight (for goods movement) is totally unwarranted, he said adding that some States like West Bengal had tried to implement this but could not. Also, the method of defining freight rate is difficult in the present context when the contract between large and small truck players, large and small customers vary based on duration of contract, volume of goods, size of trucks, and several other factors.
Global Shipping facing crucial problem as routes threatened by Sailor Shortage LONDON: The international shipping community is facing a major labour crisis, with sailors stranded on ships or at home because of visa and flight restrictions, maritime groups said. Wi t h c r e w c h a n g e s d o w n b y 75 per cent, a humanitarian crisis is also developing, with sailors suffering mental health problems, fatigue and accidents from being trapped for months at a time on ships. With more than 200,000 sailors unable to leave their vessels and a
similar number trying to get out to them, international shipping bodies believe the world economy is weeks from another disaster. Last week, only 13 countries including the UAE, Britain and the United States, signed up to an agreement to designate sailors as key workers, allowing them to fly home without quarantine or visa issues. But other major seafaring nations such as China and India refused to sign up, adding to the dangerous logjam that could affect the global economic
recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. With ships transporting 80 per cent of global trade, the urgency to resolve the problem has been highlighted by the International Maritime Organisation, a UN body. In a statement it said: “Three key requirements are needed to stop the crisis spiralling. Seafarers need to be designated as key workers globally, visa requirements need to be dropped, and governments need to get commercial airlines running to transport them.”

Bahri Logistics delivers Largest cargo for Saudi Electricity Company Seven mobile stations shipped in two batches from France to Saudi Arabia RIYADH: Bahri Logistics, one of the six Bahri business units, has reached a new milestone with the completion of the shipment of mobile stations with a voltage of 132 and 110 kV and a capacity of 67 MVA for Saudi Electricity Company (SEC). Marking the largest cargo that the company secured after it signed a contract with SEC in May 2016, the shipment consisted of seven sets of transformers manufactured by Siemens France. Divided into 21 trailers, the mobile stations were transported from the Port of Fos-sur-Mer in France to their final destinations in Saudi Arabia in two batches during the third and fourth quarters of 2019. Two transformer sets were shipped in the first batch and the remaining five sets in the
second batch. Both shipments were cleared and delivered without any port demurrage. Ahmed Al-Ghaith, President of Bahri Logistics, said: “The shipment of the largest cargo for SEC is yet another major accomplishment for Bahri Logistics and reinforces the company’s standing as a leading total logistics provider. We will continue to cater to the needs and expectations of our long-standing partner SEC and remain committed to further enhancing our capabilities to firmly establish our leadership position in the industry.” Bahri Logistics offers end-to-end logistics and supply chain management solutions to local and international companies operating in the region. The company also operates a container yard and offers value-added warehousing services in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
MV Safeen Tiger makes maiden port of call in Bahrain BAHRAIN: MV Safeen Tiger vessel made her maiden port of call in Bahrain recently as part of a new UAE-Indian Sub-Continent Gulf Service (UIG) linking UAE and Bahrain to the broader Gulf region and Indian Sub-Continent. Representatives from APM Terminals Bahrain, Ports Affairs-Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunication and Seahorse Shipping Agency were present. Safeen Tiger is the first vessel to be deployed by Safeen Feeders on the new UIG service which is a partnership between Abu Dhabi Ports’s ’Safeen Feeders’ and Bengal Tiger Line. Ports on the rotation of this service include Khalifa Bin Salman Port (Bahrain) – Dammam – Jubail – Khalifa Port – Jebel Ali – Karachi – Kandla – Mundra – Nhava Sheva – Khalifa Port – Jebel Ali.
