Commerce Ministry looking at fixing export target in a range for this fiscal
NEW DELHI: With the increasing global economic uncertainties, the commerce ministry is looking at fixing this fiscal year’s export target inarangeinsteadofasinglefigure,an official said. To set the target range, a detailed study on 200 countries and 31 commodity groups is in the process, theofficialsaid.
The target range would depend on parameters such as the USD 1 trillion merchandise exports target by 2030; import to GDP ratio of importing countries;exporttoGDPratioofIndia that will tell the potential and past trends.
”We are not fixing any export targetasafigure.Infact, myteamhas done an exercise, where we are saying that let us talk in terms of range. In the best scenario, the
exports can be this much and in the worst scenario, it can be this much,” theofficialsaid.
For a monitoring purpose of exports every month, the official said afixednumberwouldberequiredand that could be a mid-value or an averagemaybeaccepted.
The Ministry has though fixed an internal target which has been to export promotion councils and Indian missionsabroad.
”But we will take some more time before we will come up with our exports targets because based on the current trends, it cannot be right on our part to fix those targets as of now, so we are waiting and watching,” the officialadded.
A trade expert said that in 2022-23, India’s merchandise exports were
USD 450 billion, so the lower band of new target range could be USD 451 and even if one assumes a 10 per cent growth in 2023-24, then the upper band of the range could be aroundUSD495billion.
In April this year, apex exporters body Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) said that they are targeting to take the shipments to USD 500-510 billion during the currentfinancialyear.
India’s exports contracted by 22percent,thesteepestdeclineinthe lastthreeyears,toUSD32.97billionin June on account of global demand slowdown, especially in the Western marketsliketheUSandEurope.
Cumulatively, exports dipped by 15.13 per cent to USD 102.68 billion duringApril-Junethisfiscal.
Iran-Russia mulls forming shipping firm that could complement INSTC
NEW DELHI: Iran and Russia are mulling to form a shipping firm that could complement INSTC that connectsIndiawithRussiaviaIran.
Iran’s Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali recently stated that authoritiesinTehranandMoscoware exploring the formation of a cooperative shipping firm as part of efforts to strengthen strategic cooperation.
“There is a need to reinforce our ports; there is a need to strengthen theshippingfleet.
Even to create a joint shipping company. I just had a conversation with First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Andrey Belousov.
Iran’s Minister of Transport also discussed this topic with him. Our Russian counterparts welcomed the creation of a joint shipping company,” theIraniandiplomatstressed.
He stated that “countries need to develop ports and link them like railroads. The potential for freight shippingishugethere.”
Moscow and Tehran are collaborating on a number of fronts to promote bilateral commerce, hasten development of transport links including the International NorthSouth Transit Corridor and its Caspian Sea component, and integrate their banking systems to make it easier to conduct financial
operations. Recently, Iran-IndiaRussia held a high level meeting on smoothimplementationofINSTC.
The move comes as Iran and Russia prepare to conclude a longterm strategic cooperation deal, which will open up several new areas forcollaboration.
Trade exchanges between the two nations quadrupled in 2022. Russia became Iran’s biggest foreign investor during the Iranian calendar year that ended in March with investmentstotaling$2.76billion.

BRICS Alliance : 3 major countries all set to join in August
SHANGHAI: The BRICS Alliance have a busy month ahead of them. The Annual BRICS Summit is scheduled for the opening week of August. Many things will be on the agenda for discussion, including a newcurrency,Russia’scurrentwarin Ukraine, andexpansion.
Many countries globally have filed applications to join BRICS, with others sharing an interest in joining or participating in BRICS’ New Development Bank. Here are three of the new likely countries to jointheBRICSAlliancethisAugust.
1.Argentina
Argentina has taken significant strides toward joining BRICS. In particular, Argentina has pushed de-dollarization efforts, by ditching the US Dollar for the Chinese Yuan.
Last month, the country was reportedlytoldbytheNDBwouldvote on the country’s introduction into the bankinAugust.
Argentina may be one of the favorites to join Brazil as the only two South American countries in BRICS. We’ll have to wait to hear about the votes and find out if Argentina is in orout.
2.Iran
Al-Monitor reported last month that Iran was in attendance at a BRICS foreign ministers meeting in Cape Town, South Africa. They too have taken steps toward joining BRICS, including submitting an official application. Additionally, the Chinese ambassador to Iran, Chang Hua, said that China supports Iran’s entry into the BRICS bloc.
Hence, Iran already has a foot in the dooroftheBRICSAlliance.
3.UnitedArabEmirates
The UAE’s inclusion in BRICS expands the alliance’s economic potential giving power to challenge the U.S. dollar. The UAE is a significant economic player in the Gulf region and boasts a diversified economy. The economy is built by sectorslikeoilandgas, finance, trade, tourism, andlogistics.
The UAE is easily a favored nation to join BRICS+ upon potential expansion in August, alongside Iran and Argentina. With these three countries set to potentially join the alliance, BRICS will grow its power and influence in the world and may achieve its goal of de-dollarization soonerthananticipated.

ADB keeps India's FY24 growth forecast at 6.4% banking on demand strength
MANILA:TheAsianDevelopment Bank (ADB) has retained forecast for India's economic growth at 6.4 per cent for this fiscal year and 6.7 per cent for the next, as it's bullish that robust domestic demand will continue to support the region's recovery.
In an update to its Asian Development Outlook, the ADB said inflation is expected to continue to ease, approaching pre-pandemic
levels as fuel and food prices decline. It forecast 3.6 per cent inflation this year for developing economies in Asia,and3.4percentin2024.
The Indian economy grew 7.2 per cent in the 2022-23 fiscal ended March 2023. "Asia and the Pacific continues to recover from the pandemic at a steady pace," ADB ChiefEconomistAlbertPark said.
"Domestic demand and services activity are driving growth, while
many economies are also benefiting from a strong recovery in tourism. However, industrial activity and exports remain weak, and the outlook for global growth and demand next yearhasworsened,Parkadded.
In April, the ADB had projected that India's economic growth is expected to moderate to 6.4 per cent in the current financial year due to tight monetary conditions and elevatedoilprices.
Sustained demand from 3PL, automobile and e-commerce sectors to support warehousing leasing; occupancy to remain at 90%: ICRA
MUMBAI: ICRA estimates the industrial and warehouse logistics park (IWLP) supply to grow by 13-15% YoY in FY2024 in the eight primary markets[1] to around 435 million sq. ft., with nearly 52% share of Grade A capacity, while the incremental absorption is estimated to remain at FY2023 levels of around 39 million sq ft. The warehousing sector continues to witness a sustained demand from the third-party logistics (3PL) and automobile sectors, which together accountedfor~53%ofthetotalleased warehousing area in ICRA’s sample[2] as on March 2023. Additionally, the rapid expansion of new-agesectorslikee-commerceand allied services, growing needs of the massive consumption market, and the Government’s focus on Make-inIndiaandthePLIschemespromoting manufacturing have further boosted warehousing demand. The credit profile of warehousing operators is expectedtoremainstable.
Giving more insights, Mr. Tushar Bharambe, Assistant Vice President and Sector Head, ICRA, said: “ICRA expects the Grade A warehousestockfortheeightprimary markets to grow at 17% YoY to 195 million sq. ft. by March 2024 from 167 millionsq.ft.asofMarch2023.Forthe
incremental Grade A supply addition of 28 million sq ft in FY2024, the absorption is estimated to be around 24 million sq ft. Over 30% of the current Grade A stock in India is backed by the global operators /investors such as CPPIB, GLP, Blackstone, ESR, Allianz, GIC, and CDC Group etc. The long-term growth prospectsfortheGrade-Awarehouses are supported by the increasing focus of the end-user industries on improving operational efficiencies. The 3PL and the automobile sectors, which accounted for around half of the occupied warehousing area as on March2023,areestimatedtogrowat89% and 6-9% respectively in FY2024. Warehousing demand is further expectedtobesupportedbytherapidly expanding e-commerce sector with estimated growth rate of 30% in FY2024.”
The top five markets namely, Mumbai, NCR, Pune, Chennai, and Kolkata, accounted for 75-78% of total IWLPstockinIndiaasonMarch2023, whiletheoveralloccupancyremained healthy at around 90%. As on March 2024, Mumbai and NCR are expected to account for nearly 50% of the total stock. Notwithstanding the favourable growth prospects, the steep increase in land prices poses a challenge for the players as commensurate increase in rental rates would be constrained by the
highly competitive nature of the industry, resulting from the presence of many domestic and global players in the sector and emergence of new micro markets. As per ICRA estimates, theequityIRRexpectation of a minimum 15% can be met at rentals of Rs 22 per sq ft per month and above, when the land cost ranges between Rs 1 to 1.5 crore/acre. AnincreaseinlandcostbeyondRs2.5 crore per acre, would require rentals upwards of Rs 26 per sq ft per month to achieve the equity IRR of 15%. ThecurrentaveragerentalsforICRA’s sample set stand at Rs 24 per sq ft per month, which makes aggressive landacquisitionsunviable.
Commenting on the outlook for FY2024, Mr. Bharambe added: “The credit profile of warehousing operators is expected to remain stable, driven by healthy occupancy levels, expected rental escalations resulting in increased rental income and comfortable leverage metrics. For ICRA’s sample set, the occupancy levelsareestimatedtoremainhighat 95% in FY2024, while the rentals are expectedtoincreaseby5%inlinewith the contractual escalation in lease agreements. NEWDELHI:Indianscanagaingorge on Washington apples, as the retaliatory tariff of 20% imposed by the Indian Government on this red, juicy variety of the fruit four year ago during the Trump eraissettogobytheendofSeptember.
Washington apples currently attract an import duty of 70%, compared with 50% on apples imported from Iran and Turkey. The higher duty, and the resultant increase in the price, had
resulted in steep fall in its imports. Meanwhile, the possibility of Washington apples flooding the market hasirkeddomesticapplegrowers.
"The Government on June 22 had indicated to do away with the 20% retaliatoryimportdutythatwasimposed during the Donald Trump regime, and it willbecomeeffectivewithin90days,"said Sumit Saran, the India representative of the Washington Apple Commission.
"Washingtonapplegrowershavealready started cultivating more apples for the Indianmarket."
Before the imposition of the tariff, India used to import 7 million boxes, each weighing 22 kgs, of Washington apples.
Washington apples are imported between September and February, when the Indian crop comes to an end, headded.

Bangladesh biggest receiver of India’s infra project exports
MUMBAI: The Export-Import Bank of India is the foremost lending institution giving heft to India’s infrastructurediplomacyinSouthAsiaregionandglobally. Export-ImportBank.
Of all the neighbouring countries, Bangladesh has emerged as the major partner with which India’s infrastructure development engagement has broadened both in terms of finance and nature of projects, according to N. Ramesh, Deputy Managing Director, Export-ImportBankofIndia.
“Bangladesh, amongst South Asian countries, has the highest level of exposure. Around $7.9 billion (LOCs) is whatwehavetoday,”saidRamesh.
In recent years, the focus has been on power generation and power transmission lines as well as development of a nuclear power plant where Russian entitiesarealsoengaged, saidRamesh.
“The biggest project that we have supported is in Bangladesh, that is the power plant, a joint venture of the Bangladeshi power generating company and NTPC. We are looking at adding huge capacity or generating capacityinBangladeshandthefinancingisdonebyIndia,” saidRamesh.

No impact of Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (SCDDA) on India: GTRI
NEW DELHI: Starting 01-01-2023, Germany activated thelawtocombatforcedlabourinsupplychains, aswellas other labour law violations, as an initiative to safeguard human rights. It is called the Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (SCDDA). The law applies to businesses operating in Germany as well as to those in other countries, dealing withGermany.Smallerfirmswillbecoveredunderthelaw fromJanuary2024.
However, accordingtothethinktankGTRI,therewon’t be any significant impact of the law on India. GTRI said that India already has appropriate legislation to deal with any kind of violation of labour laws, including child labour and workplace discrimination. The report also acknowledged the minimum wage requirements exercisedinthecountry.
Germany, in a positive move, has shifted the onus for identifying risk and taking actions from government to business firms. The SCDDA includes violation of labour laws, child labour, forced labour, and occupational health and safety, and promotes due diligence in supply chains.
Traceability being an important concept, the SCDDA includes indentifying and taking corrective measures by German companies for their as well as their partners’
operatings, apart from being proactive, when it comes to retaininglabourlawsandbasichumanrights.
“This means that companies will need to collect informationabouttheirsuppliers, theiroperations, andthe riskstheyface,”AjaySrivastava(Co-Founder,GTRI)said, adding the SCDDA imposes civil liability on companies thatfailtocomplywiththelaw.
It should be noted that all EU (European Union) member countries have some form of regulations on forced labour, which are constantly being updated and strengthened. For instance, France and the Netherlands have adopted the most comprehensive regulations on forced labour. Also, in September 2022, the EU published a new regulatory proposal to ban forced labour products. Once the proposal is adopted, it will prohibit the trade of products made with forced labour in the EU market, regardlessofwheretheproductsweremade.
“The law could increase costs for companies, as they must implement new due diligence processes and extensive compliance measures. However, the law could also positively impact workers, as it could help prevent themfrombeingexploited,”thereportsaid.Further, itsaid the SCDDA is a complex legislation, and implementation mayfacecriticalchallenges.

GENEVA: More than 800 guests gathered on Monday 17 July 2023, in a custommade tent at the MSC Gate Terminal in Bremerhaven to witness the naming ceremony of the latest edition to Mediterranean Shipping Company’s (MSC) fleet, MSC MICHEL CAPPELLINI, withtheshipasthebackdrop.Priortothenamingceremony, MSC signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Free and Hanseatic Cities of Bremen and Hamburg and their ports, agreeing on the use of shore power for MSC’s vesselsinbothports.
MICHEL CAPPELLINI is one of the world’s largest and most fuel-efficient container ships by design. At 400 metres in length and with a 61.5 metre beam, it has a capacity of up to 24,346 TEUs. Despite her magnificent size, her design and technical specifications enable the shipment of more cargo at the lowest carbon footprintpercontainercarried.

MSC MICHEL CAPPELLINI and her sister ships are also built with an air lubrication system to reduce drag on thehull, aswellasshaftgeneratorstoyieldadditionalpower.
In his welcome speech, MSC CEO Soren Toft highlighted the importance of Bremerhaven to MSC as a European cargo hub: “The ports in Bremen are such an important cargo hub for us in Germany and in Northwest Europe. It is truly a strategic location for MSC, and home to over 370 of our colleagues. However, our connection with Germany goes deeper than trade. This is the third naming ceremony of an MSC vessel since 2015, and the second in Bremerhaven. It is therefore by no surprise that we continuetogrowwithourcustomersinGermany.”
Soren continued: “Efficiency and innovation are two drivers that led to the development of the MSC MICHEL CAPPELLINI. Through innovation we seek to shift the boundaries of what is possible and surpass our own industry-breaking milestones, a process of continuous evolution. Both, asafamilycompanyandastheleaderofour industry, we are very mindful of MSC’s key role in decarbonizing the logistics value chain, and the benchmark wesetforothersinourindustry.”

We are connecting the world from exactly this location with a weekly service to the Eastern Mediterranean, two weekly services to the Far East, three weekly services to South America and Mexico and an impressivefiveweeklyservicestoNorthAmerica.”
The ship’s blessing was conducted by Provost Dr. Bernhard Stecker, who has led the Catholic Community Association Bremen since 2019 and is the head of the Catholic Office in Bremen, the liaison office of the Catholic Church to the Bremen Senate and the Bremen Parliament in the state.
