11 Gujarat Maritime Cluster’s first Annual Meet held at GIFT City, Gandhinagar GANDHINAGAR: The First Annual Meeting of Gujarat Maritime Cluster (GMC) was held at GIFT City, Gandhinagar on Friday, 17th June, 2022. The report of IFSC Authority (IFSCA) on ship acquisition, financing and leasing (SAFAL) has been submitted and is under consideration. The Gujarat Maritime University (GMU) has now successfully established two important Cont’d. Pg. 6 program: LLM and MBA.

(L-R) Smt. Avantika Singh, IAS, VC & CEO, GMB, Shri Tapan Ray, MD & Group CEO, GIFT City, Shri Manoj Kumar Das, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary (Ports and Transport Department) and Shri Santosh Kumar, IRSE, Director G-Ride.

CBIC changes Customs system of AD Code Registration in Exports NEW DELHI: The Director General of System and Data Management of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes (CBIC) has issued an advisory on the changes in the customs system with respect to AD Code Registration in exports. There was a demand from trade that an AD code

should be required to be registered only once in the Customs System for filing documents across all the customs locations. To facilitate trade, various changes have been made in the system in respect of AD Code registration. Cont’d. Pg. 15

6 20th JUNE 2022

Gujarat Maritime Cluster’s first Annual Meet held at GIFT City, Gandhinagar Cont’d. from Pg. 3 GMC now has over 50 members and is growing, and it is the endeavor of the cluster to reach out to as many players as possible in order to promote the cluster and many benefits that accrue by being associated with it. Gujarat Maritime Cluster is paving the way for Gujarat’s transformation to a truly International Maritime Cluster that will be able to offer high-quality ser vices of Maritime lawyers, Brokers, Advisors, Agencies and Shipyard facilities in Gujarat. This cluster will initially consist of Shipping Lines, Freight Forwarders, Shipping agents, Stevedores, and Ship Brokers with Chartering requirements etc. The key offering of the cluster is the potential to leverage the advantages offered by collaboration between different players in the maritime eco system by knowledge sharing, skill updating and the ability to project power as a cohesive force. GMC will also prove to be invaluable for promoting its members and its services in global maritime arena, including international conferences and exhibitions. Importantly, GMC provides an

opportunity for members to be physically present in the custom built business city of GIFT. The activities already enabled by International Financial Services Centre (IFSC), include the Alternate Investment Funds (AIFs), capital markets, offshore banking and insurance companies. The eco system of these financial service players and associated infrastructure will prove invaluable for GMC members. The first session was to explore the verticals of Freight Forwarding, Non Vessel Owning Common Carrier (NVOCC), Agency, Shipbroking, marine outsourcing, marine insurance and maritime legal services in the context of Indian entities providing these services to global clients. While the Indian maritime industry has performed an excellent task in servicing the local Indian eco

system, it has fared poorly in venturing out and expanding its services to overseas clients in foreign land. The reasons are varied, including the fact that India itself is a big market. However, one of the key reasons is also the lack of a dedicated platform which can act as a spring board for maritime ventures in India to offer services globally. This gap was discussed in the context of GIFT IFSC and how GMC can act as an effective platform for Indian entities to venture

global maritime markets. The ‘wishlist’ of the Industry in the context of regulatory requirements from GIFT IFSC was discussed, as was the potential for GMC to fill up the skill and physical infrastructure gap. The second session discussed the importance of maritime cluster planned at GIFT IFSC in the context of ship owning, ship leasing and associated maritime industries. The learnings from global maritime commercial hubs and were discussed, along with the ‘wishlist’ of the industry in terms of activities to be enabled at IFSC. The panel also discussed possible ways to attract ship owning and leasing companies in the ecosystem, especially Indian companies based abroad. The significance of GIFT infrastructure and relevance of GMU and skill development in this context was also discussed. The role of GIMAC and enabling a credible maritime arbitration system within GMC was discussed, along with its significance for the cluster. It was mentioned that the existing ecosystem of offshore banking, insurance and capital markets would help maritime players to access international financial services.

Waterways turns out to be Faster, Cheaper, Sustainable and more Ecofriendly: Secretary MoPSW NEW DELHI : Addressing the senior members and industry stakeholders at the Summit on “Waterways – Connecting People – I n d i a & B a n g l a d e s h ” Mr. Sanjeev Ranjan, IAS, Secretary, M i n i s t r y o f Po r t s , S h i p p i n g & Wa t e r w a y s , Government of India, said that Waterways turns out to be faster, c h e a p e r , sustainable and more ecofriendly than other modes of transport. Mr. Sanjeev Ranjan M r. R a n j a n stated that government has worked hard to ensured that all the policies glitches which existed in the inland waterways have all been out in place for smoother trade transactions between India and Bangladesh. Government has opened up new opportunities on both sides to further harness the India- Bangladesh trade relationships added Mr. Ranjan. Appreciating PHDCCI for organizing the Inland Water ways summit Mr, Ranjan urged PHDCCI members to participate in the current existing opportunities that are on the table, to be able to reduced cost of transaction and trade between India and Bangladesh as we are emerging as major trading partners . Mr. Sanjay Bandoupadhayay, IAS, C h a i r m a n , I n l a n d Wa t e r w a y s Authority of India, Government of India, stated fact that India has total 20,00 km of length out of which 14,500 is navigable. We have 19 operational waterways for cargo movements and 25 for passengers.

He also mentioned that revival of historical river linkages between India and Bangladesh are also in line. All these developments will lead to immense trade opportunities between both the countries. Main objective is to improve the regional trade potential through Inland Waterways in South East Asian countries, said, Mr. Sanjay Bandoupadhayay. Commodore Golam Sadeq, (N), BSP, NDC, PSC, BN, Chairman, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport A u t h o r i t y, s a i d t h a t I n d i a & Bangladesh are natural partners. He mentioned that there are immense opportunities in maritime sector and there has a lot been already done to promote smoother trade with India. Since 2001, 40 percent trade volume has been increased and a lot more to be expected in the coming future. Our one of the main focus is to provide cruise facilities to promote tourism between both the countries added, Commodore Golam Sadeq. Mr. Pradeep Multani, President, PHDCCI, mentioned that India’s modal share of freight moved on inland waterways has significant potential to improve compared to other best in class benchmarks. It is imperative to increase share of the country’s inland waterways as they are highly economical and an eco-friendly mode of transport. Quoting the data from Maritime India Vision 2030 Report issued by M i n i s t r y o f Po r t s , S h i p p i n g & Waterways, Mr. Multani mentioned Inland waterways contribute ~6% of the country’s freight modal mix, while adjacent developing economies, such as Bangladesh (16%) and Thailand (12%) have a higher share of water-based

transport, highlighting the scope for improvement for India. Coastal and inland water ways account for ~5% of the overall container movement in India as compared to 515% share of coastal transportation in container movement globally. India needs a unified digital platform for National Waterways that augments inland waterways infrastructure to drive higher usage of waterways. A unified digital platform will result in transparent availability of information, higher stakeholder interaction, increased traffic on inland waterways, safe voyages, better communication, enhanced monitoring and increased public-private investment. Mr. Akshyat Bhatia, Head of Multimodal, Maersk South Asia, through his presentation elaborated on the end to end solutions provided to a vast array of their clients. Through the presentation Mr Bhatia touched upon some of the major challenges posed by the sector like drastic traffic through Benapole- Petralope, creating a bottleneck, posing a great harm to the Bangladeshi importers . To address these challenges we are working in this direction to reduce the logistics expense and further reducing the transit time by 67 percent, between India and Bangladesh. Mr. Sandeep Wadhwa, Chair, Logistics Committee, PHDCCI, stated the fact that 8480 kilometres of the navigable waterway of Bangladesh could be utilised for transportation and distribution of goods between Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Bhutan which could anchor robust business relations through the optimal and holistic development of the ecosystem of waterways.

CBIC changes Customs system of AD Code Registration in Exports Cont’d. from Pg. 3 Earlier, AD Code with associated bank account registration in the system was a one-time process for an IEC for filing of documents (i.e., shipping bills) at any Customs EDI port. An AD Code was required to be registered at every port where documents were filed. There could be multiple AD codes associated with an IEC at various ports. The registration request could be made online either t h r o u g h I C E G AT E I D o r a t t h e Customs House. The same was to be approved by an officer at ever y individual port, where the IEC sought the registration of the AD code. According to the new adjustments, an AD code with a linked bank account must now be registered in the system at only one port, and the AD code will

be available at all customs locations. Any new AD code registration (or update) at any port must be registered via an online request at ICEGATE. The possibility in ICES under the “CLK” role to add/modify the AD code and account against an IEC has been deactivated. The request would, as is customary, be approved by the officer assigned to the CLK duty at that specific port. Once an AD code is registered against an IEC at any port, the same can be used for all ports. There is no requirement for separate registration at other ports for filing documents. Any change/amendment in the particular AD code account details will have to be done at that port of registration only. There can be multiple AD codes and associated accounts registered against an IEC.

All multiple AD codes will have to be registered in the system at any one of the ports. Thus, for an IEC, there can be different ports of registration for different AD codes. “For existing AD code(s) and associated accounts registered for an IEC, the Customs port, where the last Shipping Bill with a particular AD code was filed, has been taken as the port of registration for that AD code in the System. The details of port of registration for each registered AD code against an IEC would be available on the ICEGATE login ID under Bank Account Management Option. As explained above, any change/amendment in the particular AD code account details will have to be done at that port only,” the Advisory read.

11 Multi-Modal Logistics Parks planned in phase-II under Bharatmala NEW DELHI : Under the second phase of central scheme Bharatmala Pariyojana, the gover nment has identified 11 locations across the country to set up multi-modal logistics parks (MMLPs), taking the total number of such facilities in the country to 53. Under Bharatmala Phase-I, the government has already planned 35 MMLPs of which the first ones will come up in Nagpur (Maharashtra), Chennai (Tamil Nadu), and Bengaluru (Karnataka). The first two in Nagpur and Chennai will be ready by 2024-end, senior officials in the Transport Ministry said, requesting anonymity. The programme focuses on optimising efficiency of freight and passenger movement across the country by bridging critical infrastructure gaps through effective inter ventions such as economic corridors and multi-modal integration through roadways, logistic parks, ports, and ropeways among others. Under the second phase, locations for setting up the MMLPs are Udaipur

(Tripura), Tuticorin (Tamil Nadu), Jodhpur (Rajasthan), Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh), Siliguri (West Bengal), Ranchi (Jharkhand), Haridwar (Uttarakhand), Bikaner (Rajasthan), Dighi (Maharashtra), Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh), and Bidkin (Maharashtra). Prior to this, India has never had an integrated plan to develop logistic parks. Through the 35 MMLPs planned in the first phase, the government aims to reduce logistic costs from the current 14-16% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) to about 9%. It also hopes to create two lakh jobs with this as mega logistic parks are likely to trigger creation of manufacturing or assembling clusters around these facilities, while massively cutting freight transportation costs and time. A senior official in the know of matter, who didn’t wish to be named said the MMLPs will be built under publicprivate partnership (PPP model). The government will provide the land and water, electricity, road and railways connectivity to each such park, said the official.

One MMLP will be run by one p r i v a t e o p e r a t o r, w h o w i l l b e concessioned for 45 years during which the entire park will have to be operated and maintained. “In two years, the concessionaire will have to complete phase-1 of the project, which is if he is investing Rs. 900 crore, then minimum Rs. 300 crore (30%) will have to be invested in the first two years for the development of the park,” the official said. Since logistic parks in every state will involve multiple stakeholders, for every MMLP, the government has decided, there will be a special purpose vehicle (SPV) having members from the private operators, the concerned state port authority, roadways, railways, electricity, power utilities and so on. If a state has more than one MMLP, then the SPV can be the same. Giving an update on the first phase of the programme, a senior official from the ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) requesting anonymity said tenders have been floated for three of the 35 projects.

Russia uses INSTC corridor to beat sanctions & drive trade with Iran & India NEW DELHI: Russia has begun sending goods to India via the International North South Transport Corridor (INSTC) to overcome sanctions-related challenges in doing business with traditional trade partners. In the original concept, Russian consignments for India connected over Bandar Abbas, after traversing the Caspian port of Astrakhan and Iran’s Anzali, for onward shipping to Indian west coast ports (Nhava Sheva / Mundra). One such a consignment left St Petersburg by rail last week. “The consignments are two 40ft containers of wood laminates, weighing a total of 41 tonnes,” suggested reports from Iran.

Stakeholders believe the INSTC routing also helps shorten the transit time between India and Russia to 25 days from about 40 under other available connections. However, Indian efforts at Chabahar have struggled to attract adequate traffic levels for ship operators to invest in regular scheduled offerings on the route. “India and Iran are active players in the INSTC corridor, which has assumed greater importance in view of war between Russia and Ukraine,” said A Sakthivel, President of the Fe d e r a t i o n o f I n d i a n E x p o r t Organisations. “There is a need to bring Chabahar under the INSTC to forge a partnership

with Afghanistan and Central Asian countries, besides using the important route of Bandar Abbas. Indian exporters are keen to use the route, which reduces voyage time to Central Asia by 40% and costs by 30%.” Mr Sakthivel also noted that no agency had stepped forward to provide an end-to-end logistics solution for the trade community via this alternative corridor, ostensibly deterred by cargo security risks. While it remains to be seen how far INSTC would help India and Russia grow trade volumes across tense borders, the two strategic partners saw bilateral trade soar nearly 46% between April 2021 and February 2022 to $11.9bn, according to available data.

Adani operated Vizhinjam Port offers bonded bunkering KOCHI: The V i z h i n j a m International Seaport, which in less than two years produced a record revenue of ten crore by facilitating crew exchange, is now looking to provide bonded bunkering services for ships on international excursions. The first-ever bonded bunkering was carried out last week on a foreign tug named KIKI that called on the port to convey crawler cranes imported from Gujarat aboard a vessel to the Maldives, brightening Vizhinjam’s bunkering possibilities. The bonded bunkering service is projected to strengthen Vizhinjam port’s integrated service capability, which has arisen as an income stream for the State government despite the lack of tug boats and other physical amenities. Though 719 vessels including container ships, tanker vessels, and

gas tankers have used the facility for seafarers to sign off and sign in over the last two years, vessels opting for outer anchorage crew change off the Vizhinjam coast has recently come down significantly, affecting the revenue of the port. This was after the full swing operations of neighbouring ports after the Covid outbreak. Ajith Prasad, Managing Director of Sathyam Shipping and Logistics Pvt Ltd, which did the agency work for the first bonded bunkering at Vizhinjam Port, said, “the ports could earn a considerable revenue by way of crew exchange including port dues, outer anchorage, channel fee, vehicle entry and tug hire charges. But in the current milieu, the port needs to start bunkering services to enhance its international influence. Crew exchange alone would not attract foreign vessels to the port for which we need to provide bunkering, house cleaning, husbandry works etc,” said Mr. Ajith.

Vinu Lal, port pursuer, Vizhinjam, said since the Vizhinjam port was very close to the international sea route and considering the economic turmoil in Colombo, the Vizhinjam port could emerge as a major service provider in terms of crew exchange and bunkering. The port could provide outer anchorage bunkering for ships with the help of a bunkering barge. The private agencies were ready to provide barge service for this, said Mr. Lal. But it was also essential for the State government to provide other infrastructure facilities, including land adjacent to the coast for constructing tanks for oil storage etc. This would also create a lot of employment opportunities along the coast, as maintenance of the vessel, fuelling, and cleaning of the tankers could catapult the port to a bunkering hub in future, said steamer agents.

Rajasthan Export Promotion Council likely to start in July NEW DELHI : The Government of Rajasthan is expected to announce the Export Promotion Council next month constituting of government officials and industry leaders. The formation process of the council is in the final stage, as per media report. To make efficient strategies to help and support the exporters industrial representatives as well as government officials are expected to members of the council. Speaking at an event of Federation of Rajasthan Exporters (FORE), Rajiv Arora, President of the Industry Body said that the constitution of the

council will help the exporters find new markets, understand new trends, find ways for the government to resolve their issues, and handhold them to expand their businesses. Arora who also ser ves as a Chairman of Rajasthan Small Industries Corporation’s expressed their intent to play an important role in boosting exports infrastructure in the state. Highlighting the issues of logistics faced by the state owing to its geographical positioning, he said the containers carrying export merchandise from Jodhpur have grown over 50 per cent in 2021-22 to

12,600 from 8,000 in 2020-21. “There is a need to have an additional Inland Container Depot. We have identified the land and it will be developed soon,” he said. Emphasising on the opportunities available through e-commerce platfor ms for exports, Mahavir Sharma, General Secretary of FORE, “E-commerce platform for exports are already being used by some manufacturers and they are doing well.” FORE will create a bridge between the online platforms and exporters to boost exports from Rajasthan, he said.

Agri-export growth momentum to continue in current fiscal : APEDA Chairman NEW DELHI - India’s agricultural and processed food product exports will continue to surge in the current fiscal after a record shipment valued at $25.6 billion in 2021-22 because of global demand for the agricultural c o m m o d i t i e s , s a i d Madhaiyaan Angamuthu, Chairman of Agricultural and Processed Food Products Exports Development Authority (APEDA). Demand for agricultural products from India is witnessing a surge in many markets despite logistical challenges such as freight costs and container shortages, he added. “Demand for Indian products is increasing and optimum efforts are being made to ensure an uninterrupted supply chain,” Angamuthu said recently. Amongst the APEDA basket products, rice exports in 2021-22 were valued at more than $9.65 billion, while the shipment value of other key commodities like sugar was at $4.6 billion followed by buffalo meat at

$3.3 billion, wheat at $2.2 billion and fruits and vegetables at $1.4 billion. Angamuthu said that growth in the agricultural products export would be sustained despite the government banning wheat exports in May while allowing only shipments which had a letter of credit and those cleared under bilateral deals. “Our wheat exports rose only in the last two years and we were never a major player in the global market for the cereal while we continue to be the biggest exporter of rice globally in the last decades,” he said. India exported a record 7 million tonne (MT) of wheat worth $2 billion in 2021-22, against just 2.1 MT worth $0.55 billion in 2020-21. On the possibility of imposing restrictions on exports of agricultural products, the APEDA Chairman said that macro environment analysis enables each country to identify the requirement of domestic and surplus

and accordingly the decision is taken. India’s agricultural products including rice, fruits and vegetables, marine, tea and coffee exports crossed a record $50 billion mark in 2021-22. APEDA’s products share in India’s agricultural exports was 52%. The Government is also in the process of creating a matrix for 50 agricultural products with export potential. APEDA for the first time facilitated exports of unique products such as Mishri variety of cher ries and saffron, Mushkbudji fragrance rice from Kashmir valley and Apricot from Kargil to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Similarly, ‘Baodhaan’, grown in the Brahmaputra valley of Assam was exported to the United States. Jamun was shipped to the United Kingdom from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh as ‘exotic’ fruit.

AEPC to take 140-member delegation to 3 Countries next month for boosting Apparel Exports NEW DELHI - Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) on Wednesday said it is taking a 140-member delegation to the UK, Japan and the US next month to further promote outbound shipments of the sector as these countries account for about 40 per cent of apparel exports. The delegation will be participating in three international fairs -- Pure London, India Tex Trend Fair (ITTF) and Sourcing at Magic in the US -- in July, AEPC said in a statement. Naren Goenka, Chairman of AEPC said these three markets alone have a share of more than 38 per cent of the total apparel exports market, valuing USD 6.8 billion in 2021.”These shows will give an opportunity to exporters to showcase their products and supply capabilities of valueadded products with special emphasis on the products designed to suit fashion trends and requirements," he said. He added that apparel imports into the UK have witnessed a positive mark in the last three years despite the pandemic. “UK import from India in 2021 was

USD 1092.1 million registering a growth of 12.6 per cent. At a category level, woven garments hold a much better acceptance in the UK as compared to knitted garments. The benefit from AEPC participation is, it will strengthen our position in the UK market before the India- UK FTA, which is expected to reduce the tariff further," he said. While the US fashion companies continue to diversify their sourcing, Asia as a whole will remain dominant in 2022. Indian apparel exports to the US in 2021 stood at USD 4.5 billion, registering a growth of more than 40 per cent compared with last year. In the Japan market, he said knitted garments are getting more popular than woven ones. "The Indian exporters have a unique niche as compared to its competitors; China and Vietnam. They can cater to both small size customised orders of 300 pieces to large orders as huge as 3 lakh pieces of one style. This makes most of the global apparel brands from the EU, US, Australia, Japan, etc. source from India," Goenka said.

APM Terminals Mumbai [GTI] clarifies on Media Report MUMBAI: Gateway Terminals India Pvt. Ltd [GTI] is surprised by the tone and content of the articles that have appeared in the media which insinuated that the agreement signed between Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority [JNPA] and GTI earlier this year was in some way in contravention of the Government of India [GoI] and Tariff Authority for Major Ports’[TAMP] guidelines. On the contrary, the settlement arrived at through the Conciliation and Settlement Committee [CSC] mechanism, which was agreed by GTI and JNPA, and endorsed by their respective Boards, was very much based on the principles laid out by the GoI and TAMP through their tariff guidelines.

By adhering to the principles agreed to and communicated by the Ministry of Shipping including the Attorney General of India’s advice dating back to July 2015, as a mechanism to resolve long standing tariff disputes, the parties have always stayed within the framework and guidelines established by the Government of India. GTI remains open to receive clear and constructive communication from the authorized bodies to resolve the matter amicably. It is important to address such matters swiftly so as to ensure business confidence and maintain India’s standing in terms of ease of doing business. We have full faith in the government’s willingness to resolve the matter expeditiously.

MSC has “Appetite for Growth” in Africa, CEO tells Abidjan Forum GENEVA: Shipping and logistics is a key topic for the public and private sector in Africa, a continent where MSC has been active since the company’s first shipping liner service in 1971. At a time when the world is seeking to recover from COVID, while tackling the challenges of soaring energy prices and food insecurity from the war in Ukraine, Swissheadquartered MSC reaffirmed its steady commitment to invest at the 10th Africa CEO Forum. "I'm a big believer in Africa, because I think the demographics speak for themselves: we all expect that Africa's 1.3 billion people will increase to more than 2 billion people in 30 years or so," MSC CEO Soren Toft said, in a keynote interview with CNN's Eleni Giokos at the conference in Abidjan on 14 June. "If, like MSC, you have a long view over decades, then Africa is a place to invest. GDPper-capita will definitely increase," he added, referring to Gross Domestic Product, the measure of an economy. The Africa CEO Forum brings together governments, companies and other organisations to discuss and tackle the major opportunities and challenges facing the continent. This year's programme featured interventions from several serving African presidents and a blend of African entrepreneurs and executives, along with CEOs and board members of multinationals that operate in Africa, such as MSC. 1,800 attendees analysed how global trends are impacting African countries' quest for economic sovereignty. The delegates also included senior managers from MSC's headquarters in Geneva, as well as local country heads from Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal and Togo. Among the other conference speakers was Abdul Samad Rabiu, founder & Chairman of BUA Group, a leading familyowned Nigerian foods, infrastructure, mining and manufacturing conglomerate, who commented on the need to develop infrastructure and strengthen supply chains. The African family business model was a common topic of discussion at the forum, drawing certain parallels with MSC, which is also family-owned. The closeness of the Aponte family to the MSC business enables the company's management to consider long-term, inter-generational trends and to make decisions in an agile way, among other advantages. MSC is in the process of acquiring Bollore Africa Logistics, another family-run company, following a 31 March 2022 agreement to purchase all of Bollore Group's African shipping, logistics, transport and container terminals for 5.7 billion euros (USD 6.4 billion). The deal, which is subject to regulatory approvals, has highlighted MSC's intent to

continue to grow and invest in the continent’s assets and people. "Our container shipping services will be able to go to the terminals of Bollore and we will be able to develop those terminals even more as we expand our shipping network," Soren said. "We’re going to welcome more than 20,000 people to the MSC family. My job is to make sure they feel comfortable and welcome, so that they can continue their growth too.” By investing billions of dollars in the continent, MSC plans to contribute further to the evolution of Africa's maritime and inland transportation networks, building on the past several years which have seen a number of African ports start to berth container ships of 13-14,000 TEUs. Soren said he was optimistic that Africa would develop larger ports and that in the long term they could one day be better and more productive than some of the world's largest ports. Certain international maritime hubs are currently suffering from congestion following a legacy of under investment, coupled with a systemic lack of joined up thinking with landside logistics networks and labour. Soren pledged that MSC would continue to "play a pivotal role in world trade", as well as seeking to facilitate smoother intra-regional commerce within the new parameters of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). While MSC has always placed its ocean business at its core, the company has been offering inland cargo transport and logistics services since decades and is familiar with how to invest in the networks and infrastructure required to support them. Establishing free, fair and affordable trade has been shown to bring populations out of poverty, with both economic and social benefits and Soren expressed his full support for the AfCFTA. “Our industry connects consumers with producers. It makes trade happen and it pulls people towards prosperity," Soren said. "We have a lot of appetite for growth and Africa is a growing continent."

HMM, SM Line and Pan Ocean launch first K-Alliance service SEOUL : HMM, SM Line and Pan Ocean have started the first service under the K-Alliance, a joint South Korea-Vietnam-Thailand service. K-Alliance was launched in 2020, with HMM, SM Line, Pan Ocean, Sinokor Merchant Marine and Heung-A Line as members. The alliance was the brainchild of the government, which sought to cut duplication and excess competition in South Korea-Southeast Asia routes. However, it took some time to plan the routes and the collaboration. Branded as “CVT”, the service will turn in three weeks calling Incheon, Qingdao, Shanghai, Ho Chi Minh City, Laem Chabang, Chiwan and Incheon. The ships deployed are the 1,809 TEU Sky Rainbow from HMM, the 1,708 TEU Jan from SM Line and the

1,809 TEU Pos Hochiminh from Pan Ocean. CVT will have its first sailing on 26 June, when Sky Rainbow sets out from Incheon. Korea Ocean Business Corporation, the state-backed ship finance institution, said on 15 June that it will work closely with the K-Alliance member carriers. This includes joint newbuilding orders by the member carriers, joint services and joint investments in overseas container terminals. KOBC Business Strategy Head Lee Jin-gyun commented, “This is a significant first step in te r ms o f pio ne e ring ne w ro ute s thro ug h t h e K-Alliance and strengthening the operational competitiveness of national shipping companies. It is meaningful that we cooperate to respond to logistics demands.”
